Inland waters in general and freshwater reservoirs specifically are recognized as a source of CH4 into the atmosphere. Although the diffusion at the air–water interface is the most studied pathway, its spatial and temporal variations are poorly documented. We measured temperature and O2 and CH4 concentrations every 2 weeks for 3.5 years at nine stations in a subtropical monomictic reservoir which was flooded in 2008 (Nam Theun 2 Reservoir, Lao PDR). Based on these results, we quantified CH4 storage in the water column and diffusive fluxes from June 2009 to December 2012. We compared diffusive emissions with ebullition from Deshmukh et al. (2014) and aerobic methane oxidation and downstream emissions from Deshmukh et al. (2016). In this monomictic reservoir, the seasonal variations of CH4 concentration and storage were highly dependent on the thermal stratification. Hypolimnic CH4 concentration and CH4 storage reached their maximum in the warm dry season (WD) when the reservoir was stratified. Concentration and storage decreased during the warm wet (WW) season and reached its minimum after the reservoir overturned in the cool dry (CD) season. The sharp decreases in CH4 storage were concomitant with extreme diffusive fluxes (up to 200 mmol m−2 d−1). These sporadic emissions occurred mostly in the inflow region in the WW season and during overturn in the CD season in the area of the reservoir that has the highest CH4 storage. Although they corresponded to less than 10 % of the observations, these extreme CH4 emissions (> 5 mmol m−2 d−1) contributed up to 50 % of total annual emissions by diffusion. During the transition between the WD and WW seasons, a new emission hotspot was identified upstream of the water intake where diffusive fluxes peaked at 600 mmol m−2 d−1 in 2010 down to 200 mmol m−2 d−1 in 2012. The hotspot was attributed to the mixing induced by the water intakes (artificial mixing). Emissions from this area contributed 15–25 % to total annual emissions, although they occur in a surface area representative of less than 1 % of the total reservoir surface. We highly recommend measurements of diffusive fluxes around water intakes in order to evaluate whether such results can be generalized.

Methane (CH4) emissions from hydroelectric reservoirs could represent a significant fraction of global CH4 emissions from inland waters and wetlands. Although CH4 emissions downstream of hydroelectric reservoirs are known to be potentially significant, these emissions are poorly documented in recent studies. We report the first quantification of emissions downstream of a subtropical monomictic reservoir. The Nam Theun 2 Reservoir (NT2R), located in the Lao People's Democratic Republic, was flooded in 2008 and commissioned in April 2010. This reservoir is a trans-basin diversion reservoir which releases water into two downstream streams: the Nam Theun River below the dam and an artificial channel downstream of the powerhouse and a regulating pond that diverts the water from the Nam Theun watershed to the Xe Bangfai watershed. We quantified downstream emissions during the first 4 years after impoundment (2009–2012) on the basis of a high temporal (weekly to fortnightly) and spatial (23 stations) resolution of the monitoring of CH4 concentration. Before the commissioning of NT2R, downstream emissions were dominated by a very significant degassing at the dam site resulting from the occasional spillway discharge for controlling the water level in the reservoir. After the commissioning, downstream emissions were dominated by degassing which occurred mostly below the powerhouse. Overall, downstream emissions decreased from 10 GgCH4 yr−1 after the commissioning to 2 GgCH4 yr−1 4 years after impoundment. The downstream emissions contributed only 10 to 30 % of total CH4 emissions from the reservoir during the study. Most of the downstream emissions (80 %) occurred within 2–4 months during the transition between the warm dry season (WD) and the warm wet season (WW) when the CH4 concentration in hypolimnic water is maximum (up to 1000 µmol L−1) and downstream emissions are negligible for the rest of the year. Emissions downstream of NT2R are also lower than expected because of the design of the water intake. A significant fraction of the CH4 that should have been transferred and emitted downstream of the powerhouse is emitted at the reservoir surface because of the artificial turbulence generated around the water intake. The positive counterpart of this artificial mixing is that it allows O2 diffusion down to the bottom of the water column, enhancing aerobic methane oxidation, and it subsequently lowered downstream emissions by at least 40 %.

Karst aquifers and watersheds represent a major source of drinking water around the world. They are also known as complex and often highly vulnerable hydrosystems due to strong surface–groundwater interactions. Improving the understanding of karst functioning is thus a major issue for the efficient management of karst groundwater resources. A comprehensive understanding of the various processes can be achieved only by studying karst systems across a wide range of spatiotemporal scales under different geological, geomorphological, climatic, and soil cover settings. The objective of the French Karst National Observatory Service (SNO KARST) is to supply the international scientific community with appropriate data and tools, with the ambition of (i) facilitating the collection of long-term observations of hydrogeochemical variables in karst, and (ii) promoting knowledge sharing and developing cross-disciplinary research on karst. This paper provides an overview of the monitoring sites and collective achievements, such as the KarstMod modular modeling platform and the PaPRIKa toolbox, of SNO KARST. It also presents the research questions addressed within the framework of this network, along with major research results regarding (i) the hydrological response of karst to climate and anthropogenic changes, (ii) the influence of karst on geochemical balance of watersheds in the critical zone, and (iii) the relationships between the structure and hydrological functioning of karst aquifers and watersheds.

The French critical zone initiative, called OZCAR (Observatoires de la Zone Critique–Application et Recherche or Critical Zone Observatories–Application and Research) is a National Research Infrastructure (RI). OZCAR-RI is a network of instrumented sites, bringing together 21 pre-existing research observatories monitoring different compartments of the zone situated between “the rock and the sky,” the Earth’s skin or critical zone (CZ), over the long term. These observatories are regionally based and have specific initial scientific questions, monitoring strategies, databases, and modeling activities. The diversity of OZCAR-RI observatories and sites is well representative of the heterogeneity of the CZ and of the scientific communities studying it. Despite this diversity, all OZCAR-RI sites share a main overarching mandate, which is to monitor, understand, and predict (“earthcast”) the fluxes of water and matter of the Earth’s near surface and how they will change in response to the “new climatic regime.” The vision for OZCAR strategic development aims at designing an open infrastructure, building a national CZ community able to share a systemic representation of the CZ , and educating a new generation of scientists more apt to tackle the wicked problem of the Anthropocene. OZCAR articulates around: (i) a set of common scientific questions and cross-cutting scientific activities using the wealth of OZCAR-RI observatories, (ii) an ambitious instrumental development program, and (iii) a better interaction between data and models to integrate the different time and spatial scales. Internationally, OZCAR-RI aims at strengthening the CZ community by providing a model of organization for pre-existing observatories and by offering CZ instrumented sites. OZCAR is one of two French mirrors of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructure (eLTER-ESFRI) project.

A spatially distributed hydrological model, dedicated to flood simulation, is developed on the basis of physical process representation (infiltration, overland flow, channel routing). Estimation of model parameters requires data concerning topography, soil properties, vegetation and land use. Four parameters are calibrated for the entire catchment using one flood event. Model sensitivity to individual parameters is assessed using Monte-Carlo simulations. Results of this sensitivity analysis with a criterion based on the Nash efficiency coefficient and the error of peak time and runoff are used to calibrate the model. This procedure is tested on the Gardon d'Anduze catchment, located in the Mediterranean zone of southern France. A first validation is conducted using three flood events with different hydrometeorological characteristics. This sensitivity analysis along with validation tests illustrates the predictive capability of the model and points out the possible improvements on the model's structure and parameterization for flash flood forecasting, especially in ungauged basins. Concerning the model structure, results show that water transfer through the subsurface zone also contributes to the hydrograph response to an extreme event, especially during the recession period. Maps of soil saturation emphasize the impact of rainfall and soil properties variability on these dynamics. Adding a subsurface flow component in the simulation also greatly impacts the spatial distribution of soil saturation and shows the importance of the drainage network. Measures of such distributed variables would help discriminating between different possible model structures.

We report the fabrication and characterization of photonic crystal fibers having a core doped with 10 wt% of phosphorus and a zero dispersion wavelength (ZDW) around 1 μm. These fibers were successfully used for high-power visible continuous wave (CW) supercontinuum generation with an output average power up to 36 W and spectral power densities of 20 mW/nm at 1550 nm and 2 mW/nm at 650 nm. We also show that the spectral power density in the whole region below the pump wavelength significantly increases as the ZDW moves closer to the pump wavelength, at the expense of the short-wavelength edge that slightly redshifts.

Les limites entre espaces urbanisés et espaces ruraux tendent à s'estomper, souvent du fait des interdépendances qui s'y développent. C'est ce que nous avons constaté sur la coupure d'urbanisation entre la métropole bordelaise et l'agglomération d'Arcachon. Dans le cadre d'une recherche régionale, nous avons questionné ces relations pour qualifier l'attractivité des territoires ruraux. Deux niveaux d'analyse liés aux dynamiques de développement de territoires de frange ont été mobilisés: les stratégies d'urbanisation à travers une interprétation des documents d'urbanisme, et les outils économiques de l'action publique sur les espaces forestiers. Il apparaît ainsi des stratégies territoriales différenciées selon les pressions endogènes et exogènes au niveau communal. Dans cet article, nous proposons un retour sur la méthode d'analyse pour en proposer des perspectives et une lecture critique dans la compréhension des mécanismes de développement territorial.

Tricomb spectroscopy unveils a new dimension to standard linear and nonlinear spectroscopic analysis, offering the possibility to reveal the almost real-time evolution of complex systems with unprecedented accuracy. Current triple comb configurations are based on the use of mode-locked lasers, which impose constraints on the comb parameters, and require complex electronic synchronization, thus limiting potential applications. In this paper, we present the experimental demonstration of a new type of all-fiber, self-phase-locked, frequency-agile tri-comb light source. It is based on the nonlinear spectral broadening of three electro-optic modulator-based frequency combs in a three-core fiber. The exploitation of spatial multiplexing of light in optical fibers offers new possibilities to generate broadband-frequency combs that are highly coherent with each other. After characterizing the stability of the source and performing several dual-comb test measurements, we revealed the high mutual coherence between the three combs through the demonstration of a 2-D pump-probe four-wave mixing spectroscopy experiment., (© 2023. Cerium-doped-silica glasses are widely used as ionizing radiation sensing materials. However, their response needs to be characterized as a function of measurement temperature for application in various environments, such as in vivo dosimetry, space and particle accelerators. In this paper, the temperature effect on the radioluminescence (RL) response of Cerium-doped glassy rods was investigated in the 193-353 K range under different X-ray dose rates. The doped silica rods were prepared using the sol-gel technique and spliced into an optical fiber to guide the RL signal to a detector. Then, the experimental RL levels and kinetics measurements during and after irradiation were compared with their simulation counterparts. This simulation is based on a standard system of coupled non-linear differential equations to describe the processes of electron-hole pairs generation, trapping-detrapping and recombination in order to shed light on the temperature effect on the RL signal dynamics and intensity.

We report a bending-insensitive multi-core fiber (MCF) for lensless endoscopy imaging with modified fiber geometry that enables optimal light coupling in and out of the individual cores. In a previously reported bending insensitive MCF (twisted MCF), the cores are twisted along the length of the MCF allowing for the development of flexible thin imaging endoscopes with potential applications in dynamic and freely moving experiments. However, for such twisted MCFs the cores are seen to have an optimum coupling angle which is proportional to their radial distance from the center of the MCF. This brings coupling complexity and potentially degrades the endoscope imaging capabilities. In this study, we demonstrate that by introducing a small section (1 cm) at two ends of the MCF, where all the cores are straight and parallel to the optical axis one can rectify the above coupling and output light issues of the twisted MCF, enabling the development of bend-insensitive lensless endoscopes.

We demonstrate a 2 mm diameter highly multimodal nonlinear micro-endoscope allowing label-free imaging of biological tissues. The endoscope performs multiphoton fluorescence (3-photon, 2-photon), harmonic generation (second-SHG and third-THG) and coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) imaging over a field of view of 200 µm. The micro-endoscope is based on a double-clad antiresonant hollow core fiber featuring a high transmission window (850 nm to 1800 nm) that is functionalized with a short piece of graded-index (GRIN) fiber. When combined with a GRIN micro-objective, the micro-endoscope achieves a 1.1 µm point spread function (PSF). We demonstrate 3-photon, 2-photon, THG, SHG, and CARS high resolution images of unlabelled biological tissues.

This Letter reports on a large mode area pixelated Bragg fiber in which some high refractive index rods were replaced by boron-doped rods that allows polarization maintaining behavior while keeping single-mode behavior. The realized all-solid fiber has a core diameter of 35 µm. The fundamental mode is circular with a 25 µm mode field diameter around 1 µm wavelength, and the polarization extinction ratio reaches 30 dB. Finally, this fiber is single-mode and bendable up to a 20 cm radius with fundamental mode losses lower than 0.3 dB/m.

Karst aquifers provide drinking water for 10% of the world's population, support agriculture, groundwater-dependent activities, and ecosystems. These aquifers are characterised by complex groundwater-flow systems, hence, they are extremely vulnerable and protecting them requires an in-depth understanding of the systems. Poor data accessibility has limited advances in karst research and realistic representation of karst processes in large-scale hydrological studies. In this study, we present World Karst Spring hydrograph (WoKaS) database, a community-wide effort to improve data accessibility. WoKaS is the first global karst springs discharge database with over 400 spring observations collected from articles, hydrological databases and researchers. The dataset's coverage compares to the global distribution of carbonate rocks with some bias towards the latitudes of more developed countries. WoKaS database will ensure easy access to a large-sample of good quality datasets suitable for a wide range of applications: comparative studies, trend analysis and model evaluation. This database will largely contribute to research advancement in karst hydrology, supports karst groundwater management, and promotes international and interdisciplinary collaborations.

Active coherent beam combination using a 7-non-coupled core, polarization maintaining, air-clad, Yb-doped fiber is demonstrated as a monolithic and compact power-scaling concept for ultrafast fiber lasers. A microlens array matched to the multicore fiber and an active phase controller composed of a spatial light modulator applying a stochastic parallel gradient descent algorithm are utilized to perform coherent combining in the tiled aperture geometry. The mitigation of nonlinear effects at a pulse energy of 8.9 µJ and duration of 860 fs is experimentally verified at a repetition rate of 100 kHz. The experimental combining efficiency results in a far field central lobe carrying 49% of the total power, compared to an ideal value of 76%. This efficiency is primarily limited by group delay differences between cores which is identified as the main drawback of the system. Minimizing these group delay issues, e.g. by using short and straight rod-type multicore fibers, should allow a practical power scaling solution for femtosecond fiber systems.

A compact scheme is demonstrated for amplification and synthesis of ultrashort pulses by fiber amplifiers. Femtosecond pulses are split in 12 different spectral bands which are amplified separately in the 12 cores of a multicore ytterbium doped fiber. Combining the amplifier outputs together with the intensity and phase management of the spectral bands lead to short pulse synthesis with adjustable pulse shape. The scheme gave an x 92 enhancement in amplified power before the onset of nonlinear effects by comparison with standard stretcher free amplification in a single core fiber.

We report the experimental observation of scalar and cross-phase modulation instabilities by pumping a highly birefringent photonic crystal fiber in the normal dispersion regime at 45° to its principal polarization axes. Five sideband pairs (two scalar and three vector ones) are observed simultaneously in the spontaneous regime, four of which have a large frequency shift from the pump, in the range 79-93 THz. These results are in excellent agreement with phase-matching arguments and numerical simulations.

The significant worldwide increase in observed river runoff has been tentatively attributed to the stomatal "antitranspirant" response of plants to rising atmospheric CO(2) [Gedney N, Cox PM, Betts RA, Boucher O, Huntingford C, Stott PA (2006) Nature 439: 835-838]. However, CO(2) also is a plant fertilizer. When allowing for the increase in foliage area that results from increasing atmospheric CO(2) levels in a global vegetation model, we find a decrease in global runoff from 1901 to 1999. This finding highlights the importance of vegetation structure feedback on the water balance of the land surface. Therefore, the elevated atmospheric CO(2) concentration does not explain the estimated increase in global runoff over the last century. In contrast, we find that changes in mean climate, as well as its variability, do contribute to the global runoff increase. Using historic land-use data, we show that land-use change plays an additional important role in controlling regional runoff values, particularly in the tropics. Land-use change has been strongest in tropical regions, and its contribution is substantially larger than that of climate change. On average, land-use change has increased global runoff by 0.08 mm/year(2) and accounts for approximately 50% of the reconstructed global runoff trend over the last century. Therefore, we emphasize the importance of land-cover change in forecasting future freshwater availability and climate.

Karstic systems are highly heterogeneous geological formations characterized by a multiscale temporal and spatial hydrologic behavior with more or less localized temporal and spatial structures. Classical correlation and spectral analyses cannot take into account these properties. Therefore, it is proposed to introduce a new kind of transformation: the wavelet transform. Here we focus particularly on the use of wavelets to study temporal behavior of local precipitation and watershed runoffs from a part of the karstic system. In the first part of the paper, a brief mathematical overview of the continuous Morlet wavelet transform and of the multiresolution analysis is presented. An analogy with spectral analyses allows the introduction of concepts such as wavelet spectrum and cross-spectrum. In the second part, classical methods (spectral and correlation analyses) and wavelet transforms are applied and compared for daily rainfall rates and runoffs measured on a French karstic watershed (Pyrénées) over a period of 30 years. Different characteristic time scales of the rainfall and runoff processes are determined. These time scales are typically on the order of a few days for floods, but they also include significant half-year and one-year components and multi-annual components. The multiresolution cross-analysis also provides a new interpretation of the impulse response of the system. To conclude, wavelet transforms provide a valuable amount of information, which may be now taken into account in both temporal and spatially distributed karst modeling of precipitation and runoff.
