Abstract: The paper describes the different methods, used in the MAGIC experiment, to unfold experimental energy distributions of cosmic ray particles (gamma-rays). Questions and problems related to the unfolding are discussed. Various procedures are proposed which can help to make the unfolding robust and reliable. Abstract: The blazar Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) was observed at energies above 0.10 TeV with the MAGIC telescope from May through July 2005. The high sensitivity of the instrument enabled the determination of the flux and spectrum of the source on a night-by-night basis. Throughout our observational campaign, the flux from Mrk 501 was found to vary by an order of magnitude. Intra-night flux variability with flux-doubling times down to 2 minutes was observed during the two most active nights, namely June 30 and July 9. These are the fastest flux variations ever observed in Mrk 501. The ~20-minute long flare of July 9 showed an indication of a 4 +/- 1 min time delay between the peaks of F(1.2 TeV), which may indicate a progressive acceleration of electrons in the emitting plasma blob. The flux variability was quantified for several energy ranges, and found to increase with the energy of the gamma-ray photons. The spectra hardened significantly with increasing flux, and during the two most active nights, a spectral peak was clearly detected at 0.43 +/- 0.06 TeV and 0.25 +/- 0.07 TeV, respectively for June 30 and July 9. There is no evidence of such spectral feature for the other nights at energies down to 0.10 TeV, thus suggesting that the spectral peak is correlated with the source luminosity. These observed characteristics could be accommodated in a Synchrotron-Self-Compton (SSC) framework in which the increase in gamma-ray flux is produced by a freshly injected (high energy) electron population.

Abstract: During its first data cycle, between 2005 and the beginning of 2006, the fast repositioning system of the MAGIC telescope allowed the observation of nine different gamma-ray bursts as possible sources of very high energy gamma-rays. These observations were triggered by alerts from Swift, HETE-2, and INTEGRAL; they started as quickly as possible after the alerts and lasted for several minutes, with an energy threshold varying between 80 and 200 GeV, depending on the zenith angle of the burst. No evidence for gamma signals was found, and upper limits for the flux were derived for all events using the standard analysis chain of MAGIC. For the bursts with measured redshifts, the upper limits are compatible with a power-law extrapolation, when the intrinsic fluxes are evaluated taking into account the attenuation due to the scattering in the metagalactic radiation field.

Abstract: We report on very high energy gamma-observations with the MAGIC Telescope of the pulsar PSR B1951+32 and its associated nebula, CTB 80. Our data constrain the cutoff energy of the pulsar to be less than 32 GeV, assuming the pulsed gamma-ray emission to be exponentially cut off. The upper limit on the flux of pulsed gamma-ray emission above 75 GeV is 4.3*10^-11 photons cm^-2 sec^-1, and the upper limit on the flux of steady emission above 140 GeV is 1.5*10^-11 photons cm^-2 sec^-1. We discuss our results in the framework of recent model predictions and other studies.

Abstract: Photon detectors are indispensable in many areas of fundamental physics research, particularly in the emerging field of particle astrophysics, as well as in medical imaging and nuclear non-proliferation. For a significant progress in all these areas a new, inexpensive industrial mass-production photosensor technology is needed. In order to reach that goal we have introduced several innovations. This paper focuses on one of them, the ReFerence flat-panel photon detector. We report on the prototype development, and in particular on the development of a new oxidation-free method for vacuum sealing of glass panel surfaces with liquid indium, at processing temperatures below 360 °C.

Abstract: Photon detectors are indispensable in many areas of fundamental physics research, particularly in the emerging field of particle astrophysics, as well as in medical imaging and nuclear nonproliferation. For a significant progress in all these areas a new, inexpensive industrial mass-production photosensor technology is needed, in many cases with a very large active area. In order to reach that goal we have introduced several innovations. This paper focuses on one of them, the hemispherical Light Amplifier. We report on the proof of principle tests of the prototype derived from an existing QUASAR phototube and a new Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode. Our experiments prove that Light Amplifier concept presents a promising solution for a next-generation low-cost photon detector offering superior performance.

Abstract: We report on a multiwavelength campaign on the TeV gamma-ray blazar Mrk 421 performed during 2002 December and 2003 January. These target of opportunity observations were initiated by the detection of X-ray and TeV gamma-ray flares with the All Sky Monitor (ASM) on board the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and the 10 m Whipple gamma-ray telescope. The campaign included observational coverage in the radio (University of Michigan Radio Astronomy Observatory), optical (Boltwood, La Palma KVA 0.6 m; WIYN 0.9 m), X-ray (RXTE pointed telescopes), and TeV gamma-ray (Whipple and HEGRA) bands. At TeV energies, the observations revealed several flares at intermediate flux levels, peaking between 1 and 1.5 times the flux from the Crab Nebula. While the time-averaged spectrum can be fitted with a single power law of photon index Gamma = 2.8 from dN gamma/dE proportional to E-Gamma, we find some evidence for spectral variability. Confirming earlier results, the campaign reveals a rather loose correlation between the X-ray and TeV gamma-ray fluxes. In one case, a very strong X-ray flare is not accompanied by a comparable TeV gamma-ray flare. Although the source flux was variable in the optical and radio bands, the sparse sampling of the optical and radio light curves does not allow us to study the correlation properties in detail. We present a simple analysis of the data with a synchrotron self-Compton model, emphasizing that models with very high Doppler factors and low magnetic fields can describe the data.

Abstract: The Crab supernova remnant has been observed regularly with the stereoscopic system of 5 imaging air Cherenkov telescopes that was part of the High Energy Gamma Ray Astronomy (HEGRA) experiment. In total, close to 400 hours of useful data have been collected from 1997 until 2002. The spectrum extends up to energies of 80 TeV and is well matched by model calculations in the framework of inverse Compton scattering of various seed photons in the nebula including for the first time a recently detected compact emission region at mm-wavelengths. The observed indications for a gradual steepening of the energy spectrum in data is expected in the inverse Compton emission model.The average magnetic field in the emitting volume is determined to be $(161.6\pm0.8mathrm{stat}\pm18_\mathrm{sys}) \mu$G. The presence of protons in the nebula is not required to explain the observed flux and upper limits on the injected power of protons are calculated being as low as 20 % of the total spin down luminosity for bulk Lorentz factors of the wind in the range of $10^4-10^6$.The position and size of the emission region have been studied over a wide range of energies. The position is shifted by 13\arcsec to the west of the pulsar with a systematic uncertainty of 25\arcsec. No significant shift in the position with energy is observed. The size of the emission region is constrained to be less than 2\arcmin at energies between 1 and 10 TeV. Above 30 TeV the size is constrained to be less than 3\arcmin.No indications for pulsed emission has been found and upper limits in differential bins of energy have been calculated reaching typically 1-3 % of the unpulsed component., Comment: 53 pages, 12 figures. Abstract: The array of 5 imaging atmospheric y Cerenkov telescopes (IACTs) deployed at La Palma (Canary Islands), and operated by the HEGRA (High Energy Gamma Ray Astronomy) collaboration, was used for observations of the Monoceros Loop SNR region for a total of about 120 hrs and 20 hrs in ON-source and OFF-source mode, respectively. The giant molecular cloud Rosette Nebula appears in the sky region, close to the south-east part of the SNR rim. Using the HEGRA system of IACTs of rather large field of view (4.3 degree in diameter), we have mapped the extended sky region of 3 ◦ × 3 ◦ associated with the Monoceros SNR/Rosette Nebula, which is centered towards the hard spectrum X-ray point source SAX J0635+533. The EGRET unidentified source of diffuse γ-ray emission (3EG J0634+0521) observed in the energy range between 100 MeV-10 GeV, was effectively in the field of view of our present observations. Also, the GeV source GeV J0633+0645 was within the available field of view. The performance of the IACTs array reveals an energy threshold of 500 GeV and an angular resolution of 0.1 ◦ for γ-rays. In what follows, we present the result of the data analysis and its physical interpretation.

Abstract: In the first months of 2001 the AGN Mkn 421 showed highly variable, strong TeV activity at flux levels frequently exceeding 1 Crab. Here we present the light curve and energy spectrum of Mkn 421 as measured with the HEGRA stand alone telescope CT1. Around 30% of the data were taken under moonlight conditions. The spectrum shows a significant exponential energy cuto at around 3.4 TeV. The results from the dark night- and the moon data are in excellent agreement with each other. A significant spectral shape variation depending on the flux level has been found. The TeV light curve is also found to be highly correlated with the X-ray light curve of the RXTE/ ASM satellite, showing no significant time lag larger than 0.2 d. The derived correlation coecient of 0.83 corresponds to a 5:2 significance.

Abstract: TeV γ-rays from the BL Lac object 1ES 1959+650 have been measured during the years 2000 and 2001 with a significance of 5.2 σ at a value of 5.3% of the Crab flux and in May 2002 during strong outbursts with >23 σ at a flux level of up to 2.2 Crab, making 1ES 1959+650 the TeV Blazar with the third best event statistics. The deep observation of 197.4 h has been performed with the HEGRA stereoscopic system of 5 imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACT system). 1ES 1959+650 is located at a redshift of z = 0.047, providing an intermediate distance between the nearby Blazars Mkn 421 and Mkn 501, and the much more distant object H1426+428. This makes 1ES 1959+650 an important member of the class of TeV Blazars in view of the absorption of TeV photons by the diffuse extragalactic background radiation (DEBRA). The differential energy spectrum of 1ES 1959+650 during the flares can be fitted by a power law with a spectral index of 2.83 ± 0.14stat ± 0.08sys or by a power law with an exponential cut-off at (4.2 +0.8 −0.6 stat ± 0.9sys) TeV and a spectral index of 1.83 ± 0.15stat ± 0.08sys. The low state differential energy spectrum obtained with lower statistics can be described by a pure power law with a spectral index of 3.18 ± 0.17stat ± 0.08sys.

Abstract: We report on the progress of the development of a hybrid photomultiplier (PMT) with a high QE, red extended photocathode and a new, fast avalanche diode as electron bombarded anode with internal gain. The new PMT is intended to replace classical PMTs in the camera of the 17-m-diameter MAGIC telescope (The MAGIC telescope, the design study for the construction of a 17 m diameter Cherenkov telescope for γ-astronomy above 10 GeV , Max Planck Institute Report, March 1998, unpublished) for ground-based gamma-ray astronomy.

Abstract: For the first time an excess of photons above an energy threshold of 730 GeV from the giant radio galaxy M87 has been measured at a significance level above 4 sigma. The data have been taken during the years 1998 and 1999 with the HEGRA stereoscopic system of 5 imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The excess of 107.4 +- 26.8 events above 730 GeV corresponds to an integral flux of 3.3% of the Crab flux or N_gamma(E > 730 GeV) = (0.96 +- 0.23) * 10^(-12) phot.cm^(-2)s^(-1). M87 is located at the center of the Virgo cluster of galaxies at a relatively small redshift of z = 0.00436 and is a promising candidate among the class of giant radio galaxies for the emission of TeV gamma-radiation. Abstract: We report on the observation of the region around supernova remnant G65.1+0.6 with the stand-alone MAGIC-I telescope. This region hosts the two bright GeV gamma-ray sources 1FGL J1954.3+2836 and 1FGL J1958.6+2845. They are identified as GeV pulsars and both have a possible counterpart detected at about 35 TeV by the Milagro observatory. MAGIC collected 25.5 hours of good quality data, and found no significant emission in the range around 1 TeV. Abstract: Using data from the HEGRA air shower array, taken in the period from April 1998 to March 2000, upper limits on the ratio Iγ/ICR of the diffuse photon flux Iγ to the hadronic cosmic ray flux ICR are determined for the energy region 20–100 TeV. The analysis uses a gamma–hadron discrimination which is based on differences in the development of photon- and hadron-induced air showers after the shower maximum. A method which is sensitive only to the non-isotropic component of the diffuse photon flux yields an upper limit of Iγ/ICR (at 54 TeV)

Abstract: A search for potential point sources of very high energy gamma rays has been carried out on the data taken simul- taneously by the HEGRA AIROBICC and Scintillator arrays from August 1994 to March 2000. The list of sought sources includes supernova remnants, pulsars, AGNs and binary systems. The energy threshold is around 15 TeV. For the Crab Nebula, a modest excess of 2.5 standard deviations above the cosmic ray background has been observed. Flux upper limits (at 90% c.l.) of around 1.3 times the flux of the Crab Nebula are obtained, in average, for the candidate sources. A dierent search procedure has been used for an all-sky search which yields absolute flux upper limits between 4 and 9crabs depending on declination, in the band from= 0t o= 60.

Abstract: The detection of TeV -rays from the blazar H 1426+428 at an integral flux level of (4 2stat 1syst) 10 12 erg cm 2 s 1 above 1 TeV with the HEGRA imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope system is reported. H 1426+428 is located at a redshift of z = 0.129, which makes it the most distant source detected in TeV -rays so far. The TeV radiation is expected to be strongly absorbed by the diuse extragalactic background radiation (DEBRA). The observed energy spectrum of TeV photons is in good agreement with an intrinsic power law spectrum of the source/ E 1:9 corrected for DEBRA absorption. Statistical errors as well as uncertainties about the intrinsic source spectrum, however, do not permit strong statements about the density of the DEBRA infrared photon eld.

Abstract: The MAGIC collaboration reports the detection of the blazar S5 0716+714 z=0.31+-0.08 in very high energy gamma-rays. The observations were performed in November 2007 and in April 2008, and were triggered by the KVA telescope due to the high optical state of the object. An overall significance of the signal accounts to S =5.8sigma for 13.1 hours of data. Most of the signal S = 6.9sigma comes from the April 2008 data sample during a higher optical state of the object suggesting a possible correlation between the VHE gamma-ray and optical emissions. The differential energy spectrum of the 2008 data sample follows a power law with a photon index of Gamma = 3.45+-0.54_(stat)+-0.2_(syst), and the integral flux above 400GeV is at the level of 7.5+-2.2_(stat)+-2.3_(syst)*10^-12 cm^-2 s^-1 corresponding to a 9% Crab Nebula flux. Modeling of the broad band spectral energy distribution indicates that a structured jet model appears to be more promising in describing the available data than a simple one zone synchrotron self-Compton model., accepted to ApJL

Abstract: We present optical, X-ray, high energy ($\lessapprox 30$ GeV) and very high energy ($\gtrapprox 100$ GeV; VHE) observations of the high-frequency peaked blazar Mrk 421 taken between 2008 May 24 and June 23. A high energy $\gamma$-ray signal was detected by AGILE with \sqrt{TS}=4.5 on June 9--15, with $F(E>100 \mathrm{MeV})= 42^{+14}_{-12}\times 10^{-8}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. This flaring state is brighter than the average flux observed by EGRET by a factor of $\sim$3, but still consistent with the highest EGRET flux. In hard X-rays (20-60 keV) SuperAGILE resolved a 5-day flare (June 9-15) peaking at $\sim$ 55 mCrab. SuperAGILE, RXTE/ASM and Swift/BAT data show a correlated flaring structure between soft and hard X-rays. Hints of the same flaring behavior are also detected in the simultaneous optical data provided by the GASP-WEBT. A Swift/XRT observation near the flaring maximum revealed the highest 2-10 keV flux ever observed from this source, of 2.6 $\times 10^{-9}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (i.e. > 100 mCrab). A peak synchrotron energy of $\sim$3 keV was derived, higher than typical values of $\sim$0.5-1 keV. VHE observations with MAGIC and VERITAS on June 6-8 show the flux peaking in a bright state, well correlated with the X-rays. This extraordinary set of simultaneous data, covering a twelve-decade spectral range, allowed for a deep analysis of the spectral energy distribution as well as of correlated light curves. The $\gamma$-ray flare can be interpreted within the framework of the synchrotron self-Compton model in terms of a rapid acceleration of leptons in the jet., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJL, 7 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

Abstract: The Cherenkov light flashes produced by Extensive Air Showers are very short in time. A high bandwidth and fast digitizing readout, therefore, can minimize the influence of the background from the light of the night sky, and improve the performance in Cherenkov telescopes. The time structure of the Cherenkov image can further be used in single-dish Cherenkov telescopes as an additional parameter to reduce the background from unwanted hadronic showers. A description of an analysis method which makes use of the time information and the subsequent improvement on the performance of the MAGIC telescope (especially after the upgrade with an ultra fast 2 GSamples/s digitization system in February 2007) will be presented. Abstract: We present the result of the observation of the ultrafaint dwarf galaxy Willman 1 performed with the 17 m MAGIC telescope during 15.5 hr between March and May 2008. No significant $\gamma$-ray emission was found. We derived upper limits of the order of $10^{-12}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ on the integral flux above 100 GeV, which we compare with predictions from several of the established neutralino benchmark models in the mSUGRA parameter space. The neutralino annihilation spectra are defined after including the recently quantified contribution of internal bremsstrahlung from the virtual sparticles that mediate the annihilation. Flux boost factors of three orders of magnitude are required even in the most optimistic scenario to match our upper limits. However, uncertainties in the dark matter intrinsic and extrinsic properties (e.g., presence of substructures, Sommerfeld effect) may significantly reduce this gap., Comment: (6 pages, updated to match journal version and reference, Fig. 2 corrected)

Abstract: In this paper we present the results of simultaneous observations of the TeV blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) at X-ray and TeV Gamma-ray energies with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and the stereoscopic Cherenkov Telescope system of the HEGRA (High Energy Gamma Ray Astronomy) experiment, respectively. The source was monitored from February 2nd to February 16th and from May 3rd to May 8th, 2000. We discuss in detail the temporal and spectral properties of the source. Remarkably, the TeV observations of February 7th/8th showed statistically significant evidence for substantial TeV flux variability on 30 min time scale. We show the results of modeling the data with a time dependent homogeneous Synchrotron Self-Compton (SSC) model. The X-ray and TeV gamma-ray emission strengths and energy spectra together with the rapid flux variability strongly suggest that the emission volume is approaching the observer with a Doppler factor of 50 or higher. The different flux variability time scales observed at X-rays and TeV Gamma-rays indicate that a more detailed analysis will require inhomogeneous models with several emission zones.

Abstract: For distant extragalactic sources of gamma-rays in the PeV (10 15 eV) energy range, interactions of the gamma rays with intergalactic diuse radiation elds will initiate a pair cascade. Depending on the magnetic elds in the vicinity of the source, the cascade can either result in an isotropic halo around an initially beamed source, or remain more or less collimated. Data recorded by the HEGRA system of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes are used to derive limits on the halo flux from the AGN Mrk 501. This is achieved by comparing the angular distribution of TeV gamma-rays during the 1997 burst phase { where direct photons should dominate { with the distribution during the 1998/99 quiescent state, where a steady-state halo contribution should be most pronounced. The results depend on the assumptions concerning the angular distribution of the halo; limits on the halo flux within 0:5 to 1 from the source range between 0.1% and 1% of the peak burst flux.

Abstract: During 1997, the BL Lac object Mkn 501 went into an extraordinary state of high X-ray and TeV gamma-ray activity, lasting more than 6 months. In this paper we report on the TeV emission characteristics of the source in the subsequent years of 1998 and 1999 as measured with the Stereoscopic Cherenkov Telescope System of HEGRA (La Palma, Canary Islands). Our observations reveal a 1998-1999 mean emission level at 1 TeV of 1/3 of the flux of the Crab Nebula, a factor of 10 lower than during the year of 1997. A dataset of 122 observations hours with the HEGRA telescope system makes it possible to assess for the first time the Mkn 501 TeV energy spectrum for a mean flux level substantially below that of the Crab Nebula with reasonable statistical accuracy. Excluding the data of a strong flare, we find evidence that the 1998--1999 low-flux spectrum is substantially softer (by 0.44+-0.1(stat) in spectral index) than the 1997 time averaged spectrum. The 500 GeV to 10 TeV energy spectrum can well be described by a power law model with exponential cutoff: dN/dE ~ E^(-alpha) exp(-E/E0) with alpha=2.31+-0.22(stat), and E0=5.1 (-2.3+7.8)(stat) TeV. Within statistical accuracy, also a pure power law model gives an acceptable fit to the data: dN/dE ~ E^(-Gamma) with Gamma=2.76+-0.08(stat). Abstract: M87 is the only known non blazar radio galaxy to emit very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays. During a monitoring program of M87, a rapid flare in VHE gamma-rays was detected by the MAGIC telescope in early 2008. The flux was found to be variable above 350 GeV on a timescale as short as 1 day at a significance level of $5.6\sigma$. The highest measured flux reached 15% of the Crab Nebula flux. We observed several substantial changes of the flux level during the 13 day observing period. The flux at lower energies (150 -- 350 GeV), instead, is compatible with being constant. The energy spectrum can be described by a power law with a photon index of $2.30 \pm 0.11_\mathrm{stat} \pm 0.20_\mathrm{syst}$. The observed day-scale flux variability at VHE prefers the M87 core as source of the emission and implies that either the emission region is very compact (just a few Schwarzschild radii) or the Doppler factor of the emitting blob is rather large in the case of a non expanding emission region., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, small changes to fit the ApJL version

Abstract: The MAGIC telescope observed the region around the distant blazar 3C 66A for 54.2 h in 2007 August-December. The observations resulted in the discovery of a gamma-ray source at energies above 150 GeV centered at celestial coordinates RA=2h23m12s and DEC=43deg0.7' (MAGIC J0223+430), coinciding with the nearby radio galaxy 3C 66B. A possible association of the excess with the blazar 3C 66A is discussed. The energy spectrum of MAGIC J0223+430 follows a power law with a normalization of (1.7+-0.3_(stat)+-0.6_(syst)) 10^(-11) TeV^(-1)cm^(-2)s^(-1) at 300 GeV and a photon index Gamma=-3.10+-0.31_(stat)+-0.2_(syst). Abstract: We searched for very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. The shell-type supernova remnant Cassiopeia A was observed with the 17 meter MAGIC telescope between July 2006 and January 2007 for a total time of 47 hours. The source was detected above an energy of 250 GeV with a significance of 5.2sigma and a photon flux above 1 TeV of (7.3+-0.7_stat+-2.2_sys)10^-13 cm^-2s^-1. The photon spectrum is compatible with a power law dN/dE = A E^-Gamma with a photon index Gamma=2.3+-0.2_stat+-0.2_sys. Abstract: The MAGIC collaboration observed BL Lacertae for 22.2 hr during 2005 August to December and for 26 hr during 2006 July to September. The source is the historical prototype and eponym of a class of low-frequency peaked BL Lacertae (LBL) objects. A very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray signal was discovered with a 5.1 sigma excess in the 2005 data. Above 200 GeV, an integral flux of 0.6+-0.2 x 10^(-11) cm^(-2) s^(-1) was measured, corresponding to approximately 3% of the Crab flux. The differential spectrum between 150 and 900 GeV is rather steep with a photon index of -3.6+-0.5. The light curve shows no significant variability during the observations in 2005. For the first time a clear detection of VHE gamma-ray emission from an LBL object was obtained with a signal below previous upper limits. The 2006 data show no significant excess. Abstract: We report the detection of a new source of very high energy (VHE; E-gamma >= 100 GeV) gamma- ray emission located close to the Galactic plane, MAGIC J0616 + 225, which is spatially coincident with supernova remnant IC 443. The observations were carried out with the MAGIC telescope in the periods 2005 December-2006 January and 2006 December-2007 January. Here we present results from this source, leading to a VHE gamma-ray signal with a statistical significance of 5.7 sigma in the 2006/2007 data and a measured differential gamma-ray flux consistent with a power law, described as dN(gamma)/(dA dt dE) = (1.0 +/- 0.2) x 10(-11) (E/0.4 TeV)(-3.1 +/- 0.3) cm(-2) s(-1) TeV-1. We briefly discuss the observational technique used and the procedure implemented for the data analysis. The results are placed in the context of the multiwavelength emission and the molecular environment found in the region of IC 443.

Abstract: We report on the discovery of Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from the BL Lacertae object 1ES1011+496. The observation was triggered by an optical outburst in March 2007 and the source was observed with the MAGIC telescope from March to May 2007. Observing for 18.7 hr we find an excess of 6.2 sigma with an integrated flux above 200 GeV of (1.58$\pm0.32) 10^{-11}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. The VHE gamma-ray flux is >40% higher than in March-April 2006 (reported elsewhere), indicating that the VHE emission state may be related to the optical emission state. We have also determined the redshift of 1ES1011+496 based on an optical spectrum that reveals the absorption lines of the host galaxy. The redshift of z=0.212 makes 1ES1011+496 the most distant source observed to emit VHE gamma-rays up to date., 4 pages, 6 figures, minor changes to fit the ApJ version

Abstract: The MAGIC collaboration has studied the high-frequency-peaked BL Lac object 1ES 1218 + 30.4, at a redshift z = 0.182, using the MAGIC imaging air Cerenkov telescope located on the Canary Island of La Palma. A gamma-ray signal was observed with 6.4 sigma significance. The differential energy spectrum for an energy threshold of 120 GeV can be fitted by a simple power law, yielding F-E = (8.1 +/- 2.1) x 10(-7)[E/(250 GeV)](-3.0 +/- 0.4) TeV-1 F (E) m(-2) s(-1). During the 6 days of observation in 2005 January, no time variability on timescales of days was found within the statistical errors. The observed integral flux above 350 GeV is nearly a factor of 2 below the upper limit reported by the Whipple collaboration in 2003.

Abstract: The MAGIC Cerenkov telescope has observed very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from the active galactic nucleus 1ES 1959+650 during 6 hr in 2004 September and October. The observations were carried out alternating with observations of the Crab Nebula, whose data were used as a reference source for optimizing gamma -ray/hadron separation and for flux comparison. The data analysis shows VHE gamma-ray emission of 1ES 1959+650 with similar to 8 sigma significance, at a time of low activity in both optical and X-ray wavelengths. An integral flux above similar to 180 GeV of about 20% that of the Crab Nebula was obtained. The light curve, sampled over 7 days, shows no significant variations. The differential energy spectrum between 180 GeV and 2 TeV can be fitted with a power-law of index -2.72 +/- 0.14. The spectrum is consistent with the slightly steeper spectrum seen by HEGRA at higher energies, also during periods of low X-ray activity.

Abstract: The long-duration GRB050713a was observed by the MAGIC Telescope, 40 seconds after the burst onset, and followed up for 37 minutes, until twilight. The observation, triggered by a SWIFT alert, covered energies above ~175 GeV. Using standard MAGIC analysis, no evidence for a gamma signal was found. As the redshift of the GRB was not measured directly, the flux upper limit, estimated by MAGIC, is still compatible with the assumption of an unbroken power-law spectrum extending from a few hundred keV to our energy range., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, submitted to ApJ

Abstract: Recently, the HESS collaboration has reported the detection of gamma-ray emission above a few hundred GeV from eight new sources located close to the Galactic Plane. The source HESS J1813-178 has sparked particular interest, as subsequent radio observations imply an association with SNR G12.82-0.02. Triggered by the detection in VHE gamma-rays, a positionally coincident source has also been found in INTEGRAL and ASCA data. In this Letter we present MAGIC observations of HESS J1813-178, resulting in the detection of a differential gamma-ray flux consistent with a hard-slope power law, described as dN/(dA dt dE) = (3.3+/-0.5)*10^{-12} (E/TeV)^{-2.1+/-0.2} cm^(-2)s^(-1)TeV^(-1). We briefly discuss the observational technique used, the procedure implemented for the data analysis, and put this detection in the perspective of multifrequency observations., Accepted by ApJ Letters

Abstract: Ground-based Cherenkov telescopes have made in recent years important contributions to high energy gamma-ray astronomy. A lower energy threshold, considerably below 100 GeV, and improved sensitivity will be key parameters to extend their role. A lower threshold will permit these instruments to cover wavelengths with good overlap with satellite experiments, thus providing essential complementary information. The latest generation of Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes was built with this criterion in mind. Preliminary studies concerning further progress in the same direction have started. We discuss in this contribution the astrophysics and physics arguments for lowering the observable energy threshold as far as the Cherenkov technique permits, and the ensuing complementarity to results obtained with a GLAST-like satellite.

Abstract: 3C 279 is one of the best studied flat spectrum radio quasars located at a comparatively large redshift of z = 0.536. Observations in the very high energy band of such distant sources were impossible until recently due to the expected steep energy spectrum and the strong gamma-ray attenuation by the extragalactic background light photon field, which conspire to make the source visible only with a low energy threshold. Here the detection of a significant gamma-ray signal from 3C 279 at very high energies (E > 75 GeV) during a flare in early 2006 is reported. Abstract: The nearby dwarf spheroidal galaxy Draco with its high mass to light ratio is one of the most auspicious targets for indirect dark matter searches. Annihilation of hypothetical DM particles can result in high-energy gamma-rays, e.g. from neutralino annihilation in the supersymmetric framework. With the MAGIC telescope a search for a possible DM signal originating from Draco was performed during 2007. The analysis of the data results in a flux upper limit of 1.1x10^-11 photons cm^-2 sec^-1 for photon energies above 140 GeV, assuming a point like source. Furthermore, a comparison with predictions from supersymmetric models is given. While our results do not constrain the mSUGRA phase parameter space, a very high flux enhancement can be ruled out., Comment: Accepted for publication by Astrophysical Journal

Abstract: We observed the first known very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray emitting unidentified source, TeV J2032+4130, for 94 hours with the MAGIC telescope. The source was detected with a significance of 5.6 sigma. The flux, position, and angular extension are compatible with the previous ones measured by the HEGRA telescope system five years ago. The integral flux amounts to (4.5+-0.3stat+-0.35sys)x10^{-13} ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ above 1 TeV. The source energy spectrum, obtained with the lowest energy threshold to date, is compatible with a single power law with a hard photon index of Gamma=-2.0+-0.3stat+-0.2sys., 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. Abstract: The MAGIC collaboration has recently reported the discovery of gamma-ray emission from the binary system LS I +61 303 in the TeV energy region. Here we present new observational results on this source in the energy range between 300 GeV and 3 TeV. In total 112 hours of data were taken between September and December 2006 covering 4 orbital cycles of this object. This large amount of data allowed us to produce an integral flux light curve covering for the first time all orbital phases of LS I +61 303. 44. Observations of BL Lacertae with the MAGIC Telescope

Abstract: Since about 2002 the current‐generation imaging air Cherenkov telescopes have discovered more than 50 new VHE γ‐ray sources. More importantly, new extragalactic source classe have been discovered: radio galaxies, low‐peaked BL Lac (LBL) objects, and quasars. BL Lacertae was the first LBL object that has been detected at VHE. With the MAGIC telescope we observed BL Lacertae for 22.2 hr during 2005 August to December and for 26 hr during 2006 July to September. A very high energy (VHE) γ‐ray signal was discovered with a 5.1‐σ excess in the 2005 data. Above 200 GeV, an integral flux of (0.6±0.2)×10−11 cm−2 s−1 was measured. The differential spectrum between 150 and 900 GeV is rather steep with a spectral photon index of −3.6±0.5. The light curve shows no significant variability during the observations in 2005. For the first time a clear detection of VHE γ‐ray emission from an LBL object was obtained with a signal below previous upper limits. The 2006 data show no significant excess. Abstract: Blazar observations in VHE Gamma‐rays show intensity variations on time scales of minutes to years, most frequently with variability times of about one day. They could be caused by the interaction of relativistic jets with the surroundings, but also carry the signature of internal processes of the central engine, possibly binary systems of supermassive black holes. Ultimately, long‐term monitoring with 24‐hour coverage is needed in addition to the shorter high sensitivity exposures provided by telescopes such as MAGIC, VERITAS and H.E.S.S., in order to study the physical origin of such flaring activity. This can be achieved with a global network of small robotic Cherenkov telescopes. As a first step, we plan to set up a fully dedicated small Cherenkov telescope and carry out joint observations with the Whipple 10 m monitor telescope. The new low cost, but high performance telescope will be the upgrade of one of the former HEGRA telescopes, still located at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos on the Canarian Island of La Palma (Spain). The most important novelties will be its robotic operation and novel camera, greatly improving its sensitivity and lowering the energy threshold.

Abstract: The paper describes an application of the tree classification method Random Forest (RF), as used in the analysis of data from the ground-based gamma telescope MAGIC. In such telescopes, cosmic gamma-rays are observed and have to be discriminated against a dominating background of hadronic cosmic-ray particles. We describe the application of RF for this gamma/hadron separation. The RF method often shows superior performance in comparison with traditional semi-empirical techniques. Critical issues of the method and its implementation are discussed. An application of the RF method for estimation of a continuous parameter from related variables, rather than discrete classes, is also discussed., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: The atmospheric Cherenkov gamma-ray telescope MAGIC, designed for a low-energy threshold, has detected very-high-energy gamma rays from a giant flare of the distant Quasi-Stellar Radio Source (in short: radio quasar) 3C 279, at a distance of more than 5 billion light-years (a redshift of 0.536). No quasar has been observed previously in very-high-energy gamma radiation, and this is also the most distant object detected emitting gamma rays above 50 gigaelectron volts. Since high-energy gamma rays may be stopped by interacting with the diffuse background light in the universe, the observations by MAGIC imply a low amount for such light, consistent with that known from galaxy counts., 9 pages, 6 figures, including Supporting Online Material

Abstract: Microquasars are binary star systems with relativistic radio-emitting jets. They are potential sources of cosmic rays and can be used to elucidate the physics of relativistic jets. We report the detection of variable gamma-ray emission above 100 gigaelectron volts from the microquasar LS I 61 + 303. Six orbital cycles were recorded. Several detections occur at a similar orbital phase, which suggests that the emission is periodic. Abstract: The unidentified TeV source in Cygnus is now confirmed by follow-up observations from 2002 with the HEGRA stereoscopic system of Cherenkov Telescopes. Using all data (1999 to 2002) we confirm this new source as steady in flux over the four years of data taking, extended with radius 6.2 arcmin (+-1.2 arcmin (stat) +-0.9 arcmin (sys)) and exhibiting a hard spectrum with photon index -1.9. It is located in the direction of the dense OB stellar association, Cygnus OB2. Its integral flux above energies E>1 TeV amounts to \~5% of the Crab assuming a Gaussian profile for the intrinsic source morphology. There is no obvious counterpart at radio, optical nor X-ray energies, leaving TeVJ2032+4130 presently unidentified. Observational parameters of this source are updated here and some astrophysical discussion is provided. Also included are upper limits for a number of other interesting sources in the FoV, including the famous microquasar Cygnus X-3., 7 pages, 3 figures. Abstract: A sample of 54 selected Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) has been observed with the HEGRA stereoscopic system of Cherenkov Telescopes between 1996 and 2002 in the TeV energy regime. The observations were motivated by the positive results obtained for Mkn 421 and Mkn 501. The distances of the selected objects vary over a large range of redshifts between z = 0.004 and z = 0.7. Among the observed AGN are the meanwhile established TeV-emitting BL Lac type objects H1426+428 and 1ES1959+650. Furthermore the BL Lac object 1ES2344+514 and the radio galaxy M87 show evidence for a signal on a 4 sigma level. The observation of 1ES2344+514 together with the Whipple results firmly establishes this AGN as a TeV source. Several objects (PKS2155-304, BL Lacertae, 3C066A) that have been claimed as TeV gamma-ray emitters by other groups are included in this data sample but could not be confirmed using data analysed here.
