Abstract: We present a measurement of the Drell-Yan cross section at high dielectron invariant mass using 120/pb of data collected in pbar-p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV by the D0 collaboration during 1992-96. No deviation from standard model expectations is observed. We use the data to set limits on the energy scale of quark-electron compositeness with common constituents. The 95% confidence level lower limits on the compositeness scale vary between 3.3 TeV and 6.1 TeV depending on the assumed form of the effective contact interaction., 6 pages, 2 figures, submitted to PRL

Abstract: The DZERO detector is used to study proton-antiproton collisions at the 1800 GeV and 630 GeV center-of-mass energies available at the Fermilab Tevatron. To measure jets, the detector uses a sampling calorimeter composed of uranium and liquid argon as the passive and active media respectively. Understanding the jet energy calibration is not only crucial for precision tests of QCD, but also for the measurement of particle masses and the determination of physics backgrounds associated with new phenomena. This paper describes the energy calibration of jets observed with the DZERO detector at the two proton-antiproton center-of-mass energies in the transverse energy and pseudorapidity range ET>8 GeV and pseudorapidity, 94 pages with 52 figures (included in the 94 pages)

3. A neutron based vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detection system

Abstract: Vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices pose significant risk to government facilities, economic centers and the general public. The detonation of large-scale explosive devices is a worldwide phenomenon. Checkpoint operations currently call for a manual search of vehicles, putting personnel at high risk. We have built a prototype, remotely controlled system to non-intrusively and non-destructively detect explosives with a vehicle inspection time of between 2 and 5 min. The system utilizes a neutron generator and high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors housed in moving components that scan the entire vehicle and allow for a single location rescan. The neutron generator operates at ∼108 neutrons per second resulting in extremely small induced radiation levels and low exposure to possible stowaways. A control software operator interface is fully automated for remote operation of the hardware components and execution of the data analysis and threat algorithm with no operator intervention. Studies have been completed to characterize the performance of the system as a function of the weight of explosive within a complete set of vehicles. The underlying physical concepts of the system development are presented.

Abstract: We have studied inclusive muon events using all the data collected by the TOPAZ detector at sqrt(s)=58 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 273pb-1. From 1328 inclusive muon events, we measured the ratio R_qq of the cross section for qq-bar production to the total hadronic cross section and forward-backward asymmetry A^q_FB for b and c quarks. The obtained results are R_bb = 0.13+-0.02(stat)+-0.01(syst), R_cc = 0.36+-0.05(stat)+-0.05(syst), A^b_FB = -0.20+-0.16(stat)+-0.01(syst) and A^c_FB = -0.17+-0.14(stat)+-0.02(syst), in fair agreement with a prediction of the standard model., Comment: To be published in EPJ C. 24 pages, 12 figures

Abstract: of data collected with the DO detector during 1993-1995. We find that a(p (p) over bar --> W + X)B(W --> tau nu) = 2.22 +/- 0.09 (stat) +/- 0.10 (syst) +/- 0.10 (lum) nb. Lepton universality predicts that the ratio of the tau and electron electroweak charged current couplings to the W boson, g(T)(W)/g(e)(W), be unity. We find g(T)(W)/g(e)(W) = 0.980 +/- 0.031, in agreement with lepton universality.

Abstract: The shape of jets produced in (quasi-) real photon-photon collisions as well as in e^+e^- annihilation process has been studied with a cone jet finding algorithm, using the data taken with the TOPAZ detector at the TRISTAN e^+e^- collider at an average center-of-mass energy of 58 GeV. The results are presented in terms of the jet width as a function of the jet transverse energy(E^{jet}_T) as well as a scaled transverse jet energy, x_T(=2E^{jet}_T/root(s)). The jet width narrows as E^{jet}_T increases; however, at the same value of E^{jet}_T the jet width in gamma-gamma collisions at TRISTAN is significantly narrower than that in gamma p collisions at HERA. By comparing our results with the data in other reactions, it has been shown that the jet width in gamma-gamma, gamma p, p\bar{p} collisions as well as the e^+e^- annihilation process has an approximate scaling behavior as a function of x_T.

Abstract: The mechanism of baryon-anti-baryon pair production in e + e − annihilation into hadrons has been studied using the TOPAZ detector at the TRISTAN e + e − collider at an average center-of-mass energy of 58 GeV. The distributions of various p p correlations were compared with two prominent models: the cluster-fragmentation model and the string-fragmentation model. We rejected the cluster-fragmentation model at the 90% C.L. Furthermore, in the context of the string-fragmentation model, we favor the “popcorn” model, rejecting the “diquark” model, where a diquark is considered to be a fundamental entity, at the 95% C.L.

Abstract: The shape of the transverse momentum distribution of W bosons (p_T(W)) produced in pbarp collisions at sqrt(s)= 1.8 TeV is measured with the DO detector at Fermilab. The result is compared to QCD perturbative and resummation calculations over the p_T(W) range from 0-200 GeV/c. The shape of the distribution is consistent with the theoretical prediction.

Abstract: We have searched for the flavor-changing neutral current decay b -> s mu+ mu- in p pbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV with the DO detector at Fermilab. We determine the 90% confidence level limit for the branching fraction to be B(b -> X_s mu+ mu-) < 3.2 x 10^{-4}. We argue that this limit is more stringent than the best published limit on this decay rate.

Abstract: Charged-particle multiplicity was studied in e+e− annihilation at s = 57.8 GeV using the TOPAZ detector at TRISTAN. The average multiplicity was 〈nch〉 = 17.64± 0.05(stat.) ± 0.41(syst.). It was found that the multiplicity depends on the thrust (T) of an event. From extrapolating this relation to T = 2 3 , the multiplicity for three-fold symmetric events was estimated to be 〈n ch 〉 T = 2 3 = 23.50 −1.45 +1.25 . From this, the multiplicity ratio between gluon- and quark-jet was estimated to be r g q = 1.46 −0.13 +0.09 without any possible bias from jet clustering.

Abstract: We report the first purely electroweak measurement of the strengthening of the electromagnetic coupling, {alpha}{sub QED} with increasing momentum transfer Q{sup 2}, by comparing the process e{sup +}e{sup -}{r_arrow}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} with the process e{sup +}e{sup -}{r_arrow}e{sup +}e{sup -}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -}. The data were accumulated at an average center-of-mass energy {l_angle}{radical}(s){r_angle}=57.77GeV using the TOPAZ detector at the TRISTAN e{sup +}e{sup -} collider. We measure {alpha}{sup -1}{sub QED}(Q{sup 2}) to change from its known value of {alpha}{sup -1}{sub QED}{congruent} 137.0 at Q{sup 2}=0to1 28.5{plus_minus}1.8(stat){plus_minus}0.7(syst) at Q{sup 2}=(57.77GeV/c){sup 2}. Abstract: We report on a search for right-handed W bosons (W R ) with mass greater than 200GeV/c 2 . We used data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp collider at √s=1.8TeV to search for W R decays into an electron and a massive right-handed neutrino W R ± >e ± N R . Using the inclusive electron data, we set mass limits independent of the N R decay: m W R >650GeV/c 2 and m W R >720GeV/c 2 at the 95% confidence level, valid for m N R W R and mN R «m W R , respectively. The latter also represents a new lower limit on the mass of a heavy left-handed W boson (W') decaying into ev. In addition, limits on mWR valid for larger values of the N R mass are obtained assuming that NR decays to an electron and two jets.

Abstract: We have carried out inclusive measurements of $\Lambda(\bar{\Lambda})$ production in two-photon processes at TRISTAN. The mean $\sqrt{s}$ was 58 GeV and the integrated luminosity was 265 pb$^{-1}$. Inclusive $\Lambda (\bar{\Lambda})$ samples were obtained under such conditions as no-electron, anti-electron, and remnant-jet tags. The data were compared with theoretical calculations. The measured cross sections are two-times larger than the leading-order theoretical predictions, suggesting the necessity of next-to-leading-order Monte-Carlo generator.

Abstract: The total hadronic cross section in e + e − annihilation was measured at s =5.77 GeV to be σ h = 143.6 ± 1.5 (stat) ± 3.5 (sys) pb with only the QED corrections. The measurement was based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 90.8 pb −1 accumulated by the TOPAZ detector at TRISTAN. Our data point put stringent constraints on the size of the γ - Z 0 interference and the Z 0 mass. Combining our data with the OPAL data at LEP, we obtained the coefficient of the interference and the Z 0 mass to be J had = 0.10 ± 0.26 and M z = 91.151 ± 0.008 GeV, respectively, in a model-independent analysis.

Abstract: Inclusive momentum spectra are measured for all charged particles and for each of $\pi^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $K^0/\bar{K^0}$, and $p/\bar{p}$ in hadronic events produced via $e^+e^-$ annihilation at $\sqrt{s}$=58GeV . The measured spectra are compared with QCD predictions based on the modified leading log approximation(MLLA). The MLLA model reproduces the measured spectra well. The energy dependence of the peak positions of the spectra is studied by comparing the measurements with those at other energies. The energy dependence is also well described by the MLLA model.

Abstract: We have measured, with electron tagging, the forward-backward asymmetries of charm- and bottom-quark pair productions at $ $=58.01GeV, based on 23,783 hadronic events selected from a data sample of 197pb$^{-1}$ taken with the TOPAZ detector at TRISTAN. The measured forward-backward asymmetries are $A_{FB}^c = -0.49 \pm 0.20(stat.) \pm 0.08 (sys.)$ and $A_{FB}^b = -0.64 \pm 0.35(stat.) \pm 0.13 (sys.)$, which are consistent with the standard model predictions.

Abstract: We have studied open charm production in $\gamma \gamma$ collisions with the TOPAZ detector at the TRISTAN $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. In this study, charm quarks were identified by electrons (and positrons) from semi-leptonic decays of charmed hadrons. The data corresponded to an integrated luminosity of 95.3 pb$^{-1}$ at a center-of-mass energy of 58 GeV. The results are presented as the cross sections of inclusive electron production in $\gamma \gamma$ collisions with an anti-tag condition, as well as the subprocess cross sections, which correspond to resolved-photon processes. The latter were measured by using a sub-sample with remnant jets. A comparison with various theoretical predictions based on direct and resolved-photon processes showed that our data prefer that with relatively large gluon contents in a photon at small $x (x \le 0.1)$, with the next-to-leading order correction, and with a charm-quark mass of 1.3 GeV.

Abstract: First experimental results are presented from a search for events with a rapidity gap between jets. The D0 detector was used to examine events produced by the Fermilab Tevatron [ital p[bar p]] collider at [radical][ital s] =1.8 TeV. The fraction of events with an observed rapidity gap between the two highest transverse energy ([ital E][sub [ital T]]) jets is measured as a function of the pseudorapidity separation between the jet edges ([Delta][eta][sub [ital c]]). An upper limit at the 95% confidence level of 1.1[times]10[sup [minus]2] is obtained on the fraction of events with non particles between the jets, for events with [Delta][eta][sub [ital c]][gt]3 and jet [ital E][sub [ital T]] greater than 30 GeV.

20. A Neutron Based Scanner to Detect Explosives in Small, Sealed Containers

Abstract: A scanning system has been designed for portal protection applications, with the capability of detecting explosive materials after an initial scan of 30 seconds. The scanner operates using the principle of neutron induced return gamma‐ray spectrometry. This system utilizes high purity germanium detectors, a neutron generator based on deuterium‐tritium fusion and a unique neutron reflector and guide design. The neutron reflector amplifies the flux and alters the energy spectrum of neutrons produced by the generator. A depleted uranium reflector is shown to perform 7.3 times better than no reflector, and is found to perform 1.5 times better than a tungsten reflector using MCNP simulation. This improvement is due to neutron knockout and induced fission occurring in depleted uranium. The system is capable of detecting 300 g of explosives with 90% detection probability, which includes a 15% rescan rate after a 30 second initial scan.

23. A Neutron Based Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device Detection System

Abstract: The design and performance of a pulseable neutron source utilizing a D-T neutron generator and a depleted uranium reflector are presented for use in a scanning system of improvised explosive devices. Approximately half the generator's 14 MeV neutron flux is used to produce a fission- like neutron spectrum similar to 252Cf. For every 14 MeV neutron entering the reflector, more than one fission-like neutron is reflected back across the surface of the reflector. Because the delayed neutron production is more than two orders of magnitude below the prompt neutron production, the source takes full advantage of the generator's pulsed mode capability. Applications include all elemental characterization systems using neutron-induced gamma-ray spectroscopy. The source simultaneously emits 14 MeV neutrons optimal to excite fast neutron-induced gamma-ray signals, such as from carbon and oxygen, and fission-like neutrons optimal to induce neutron capture gamma-ray signals.

Abstract: We report on measurements on inclusive cross sections times branching fractions into electrons for W and Z bosons produced in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.8 TeV. From an integrated luminosity of 84.5 pb(-1) recorded in 1994-1995 using the D empty set detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, we determine sigma(p (p) over bar--> W + X) x B(W-->e nu) = 2310 +/- 10(stat) +/- 50(syst) +/- 100(lum)pb and sigma(p (p) over bar-->Z + X) x B(Z-->ee)=221+/-3(stat)+/-4(syst)+/-10(lum)pb. From these, we derive sigma(p (p) over bar-->W + X) x B(N-->e nu)/sigma(p (p) over bar-->Z + X) x B(Z-->ee) = 10.43+/-0.15(stat) +/- 0.20(syst) +/- 0.10(NLO), B(W-->e nu) = 0.1044+/-0.0015(stat)+/-0.0020(syst)+/-0.0017(theory)+/-0.0010(NLO). and Gamma(w) = 2169 +/- 0.03 l(stat) +/- 0.042(syst) +/- 0.041(theory)+/- 0.022(NLO)GeV. We use the latter to set a 95% confidence level upper limit on the partial decay width of the W boson into nonstandard model final states, Gamma(W)(inv), of 0.213 GeV. Combining these results with those from the 1992-1993 data gives sigma(p (p) over bar-->W+X) x B(W-->e nu)/sigma(p (p) over bar-->Z+X) x B(Z-->ee) = 10.51+/-0.25, Gamma(W) = 2.152 +/- 0.066 GeV, and a 95% C.L. upper limit an Gamma(W)(inv) of 0.191 GeV. Using a sample with a luminosity of 505 nb(-1) taken at root s = 630 GeV, we measure sigma(p (p) over bar--> W+ X) x B(W --> e nu) = 658 +/- 67 pb.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the differential cross section as a function of transverse momentum of the Z boson in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV using data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider during 1994--1996. We find good agreement between our data and the NNLO resummation prediction and extract values of the non-perturbative parameters for the resummed prediction from a fit to the differential cross section.

Abstract: Evidence of anomalous WW and WZ production was sought in pbar{p} collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. The final states $WW (WZ) to mu-nu-jet-jet + X, WZ to mu-nu-e-e + X and WZ to e-nu-e-e + X were studied using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 90 pb-1. No evidence of anomalous diboson production was found. Limits were set on anomalous WWgamma and WWZ couplings and were combined with our previous results. The combined 95% confidence level anomalous coupling limits for Lambda=2 TeV are -0.25 LE Delta-kappa LE 0.39 (lambda=0) and -0.18 LE lambda LE 0.19 (Delta \kappa = 0), assuming the WWgamma couplings are equal to the WWZ couplings.

Abstract: We report on a search for bottom squarks produced in pbarp collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV using the D0 detector at Fermilab. Bottom squarks are assumed to be produced in pairs and to decay to the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) and a b quark with branching fraction of 100%. The LSP is assumed to be the lightest neutralino and stable. We set limits on the production cross section as a function of bottom squark mass and LSP mass.

Abstract: We present a search for charged Higgs bosons in decays of pair-produced top quarks using 109.2 +- 5.8 pb^-1 of data recorded from ppbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV by the D0 detector during 1992-96 at the Fermilab Tevatron. No evidence is found for charged Higgs production, and most parts of the [m(H+),tan(beta)] parameter space where the decay t -> bH+ has a branching fraction close to or larger than that for t -> bW+ are excluded at 95% confidence level. Assuming m(t) = 175 GeV and sigma(ppbar -> ttbar) = 5.5 pb, for m(H+) = 60 GeV, we exclude tan(beta) < 0.97 and tan(beta) > 40.9., 11 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PRL

Abstract: We have searched for central production of a pair of photons with high transverse energies in $p\bar p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.8$ TeV using $70 pb^{-1}$ of data collected with the D\O detector at the Fermilab Tevatron in 1994--1996. If they exist, virtual heavy pointlike Dirac monopoles could rescatter pairs of nearly real photons into this final state via a box diagram. We observe no excess of events above background, and set lower 95% C.L. limits of $610, 870, or 1580 GeV/c^2$ on the mass of a spin 0, 1/2, or 1 Dirac monopole., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: This study reports the first measurement of the azimuthal decorrelation between jets with pseudorapidity separation up to five units. The data were accumulated using the D{\O}detector during the 1992--1993 collider run of the Fermilab Tevatron at $\sqrt{s}=$ 1.8 TeV. These results are compared to next--to--leading order (NLO) QCD predictions and to two leading--log approximations (LLA) where the leading--log terms are resummed to all orders in $\alpha_{\scriptscriptstyle S}$. The final state jets as predicted by NLO QCD show less azimuthal decorrelation than the data. The parton showering LLA Monte Carlo {\small HERWIG} describes the data well; an analytical LLA prediction based on BFKL resummation shows more decorrelation than the data., Comment: 6 pages with 4 figures, all uuencoded and gzipped

Abstract: We have observed highly virtual ($Q^2>1.05 GeV^2$) photon-photon collisions to hadronic final states at $\sqrt{s_{e^+e^-}}=58 GeV$. The integrated luminosity of the data sample was 241pb$^{-1}$. Both scattered beam-electrons and scattered beam-positrons were detected using low-angle calorimeters (i.e., both photons were highly virtual, "double-tag"); we obtained 115 hadronic events with an estimated background of $10.2\pm1.1$. The cross section obtained was $4.11\pm0.66$pb in the $22$ GeV region, while the lowest order quark-parton model predicted 3.00pb., Comment: 14 pages, latex (revtex), 2 figures, available at http://topsun1.kek.jp/~enomoto/dtag.ps

Abstract: The DO collaboration reports on a search for the Standard Model top quark in pbar-p collisions at Sqrt(s)=1.8TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron, with an integrated luminosity of approximately 50pb-1. We have searched for t-tbar production in the dilepton and single-lepton decay channels, with and without tagging of b-quark jets. We observed 17 events with an expected background of 3.8+/-0.6 events. The probability for an upward fluctuation of the background to produce the observed signal is 2.0E-6 (equivalent to 4.6 standard deviations). The kinematic properties of the excess events are consistent with top quark decay. We conclude that we have observed the top quark and measure its mass to be 199^+19_21 (stat.)+/- 22 (syst.)GeV/c**2 and its production cross section to be 6.4 +/- 2.2 pb., Comment: postscript available at http://fnnews.fnal.gov/top_paper_dzero.ps, for further info see http://fnnews.fnal.gov/top_discovery.html

Abstract: Data from the high-resolution spectrometer at PEP have been used to study the inclusive production of phi mesons and F/sup + -/ mesons decaying into phi..pi../sup + -/. Fragmentation functions and cross sections are presented and compared to existing data. The total phi cross section at 29 GeV is 40 +- 6 pb. The observed F signal in the region z>0.4, given the assumption that R(F)/(R(F)+R(D)) = 0.15, corresponds to an F..-->..phi..pi.. branching ratio of (3.3 +- 1.1)%. The measured F mass is 1963 +- 3 +- 3 MeV/c/sup 2/.

Abstract: The characteristics of tau decays to final states involving η mesons are presented. The data sample, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 300pb −1 , was taken at the PEP e + e − colliding beam facility using the High Resolution Spectrometer. The storage ring was operated at √ s = 29 GeV. The η production appears to be only compatible with the decay τ + → π + η ν , which violates isospin and G -parity conservation. This decay, thus, proceeds via a second-class vector current. The branching ratio (5.1 ± 1.5)% explains much of the current discrepancy between the one-prong topological branching ratio and the sum of the individual one-prong modes.

Abstract: Inclusive production of (D/sup 0/,D-bar /sup 0/) and D/sup + -/ mesons has been observed in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at 29 GeV. The signals correspond to R values of R(D/sup 0/+D /sup 0/) = 3.25 +- 1.2 and R(D/sup +/+D/sup -/) = 1.35 +- 0.6. D/sup asteriskplus-or-minus/ production is also observed via the process D/sup asterisk+/..-->..D/sup 0/..pi../sup +/ and its charge conjugate. The D and D( production rates are compared.

Abstract: A search for fourth-generation charge - 1 3 ( b ′) quarks using inclusive muon events in e+e- annihilations at s =56.5-60.8 GeV is presented, considering its decays through loop-induced flavor-changing neutral-current as well as its charged current decays. Production of b′ (and top) was excluded as the cause of slightly high R-values observed at ∈s=⩾56.0 GeV, if they decay dominantly through a charged-current (68%). One large aplanarity event (A=0.17 with an isolated muon, observed at s =60.8 GeV, is also presented.

Abstract: We have measured the invariant cross section for inclusive phi production in proton-nucleus collisions at 400 GeV/c near Feynman chi = 0. For transverse momenta in the range between 0.8 and 3.5 GeV/c the ratio of the phi to ..pi../sup -/ rises from 1 to 7%. We also report on correlations with particles opposite the phi in the center-of-mass system as they relate to the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka rule.

Abstract: The TOPAZ detector has accumulated about 11 pb−1 of data in the energy range s =52−57 GeV . Charged supersymmetric particles have been searched for. Assuming the photino to be massless, we place limits on the chargino of m χ GeV , on the scalar muon, tau, and quark of m μ GeV , m τ GeV , and m q GeV . The scalar electron can be excluded up to a mass of ∼ 28 GeV. Other cases are examined.

Abstract: We present final results of a sensitive search for new particles in π ± K ∓ effective mass spectra observed in proton-nucleus collisions at 400 GeV/ c . We establish a limit for D 0 (1.865) production B π + π − d σ /d y y cm ≈ −0.4. For D 0 → π − K + the limit is 290 nb/nucleon.

Abstract: This report describes the first search for top squark pair production in the channel stop_1 stopbar_1 -> b bbar chargino_1 chargino_1 -> ee+jets+MEt using 74.9 +- 8.9 pb^-1 of data collected using the D0 detector. A 95% confidence level upper limit on sigma*B is presented. Abstract: We report on a study of color coherence effects in pp- collisions at a center of mass energy √s = 1.8 TeV. The data were collected with the DØ detector during the 1992-1993 run of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We observe the presence of initial-to-final state color interference with the spatial correlations between soft and hard jets in multijet events in the central and in forward pseudorapidity regions. The results are compared to Monte Carlo simulations with different color coherence implementations and to the predictions of script O sign(α3s) QCD calculations. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract: We present a measurement of tbar-t production using multijet final states in pbar-p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV, with an integrated luminosity of 110.3 pb(-1). The analysis has been optimized using neural networks to achieve the smallest expected fractional uncertainty on the tbar-t production cross section, and yields a cross section of 7.1 +/- 2.8(stat.) +/- 1.5(syst.) pb, assuming a top quark mass of 172.1 GeV/c^(2). Combining this result with previous D0 measurements, where one or both of the W bosons decay leptonically, gives a tbar-t production cross section of 5.9 +/- 1.2(stat) +/- 1.1(syst) pb., 6 pages, 3 figures; no substative change in revision

Abstract: The feasibility and methodology of using a compact DD generator-based neutron activation analysis system to measure aluminum in hand bone has been investigated. Monte Carlo simulations were used to simulate the moderator, reflector, and shielding assembly and to estimate the radiation dose. A high purity germanium (HPGe) detector was used to detect the Al gamma ray signals. The minimum detectable limit (MDL) was found to be 11.13 μg g(-1) dry bone (ppm). An additional HPGe detector would improve the MDL by a factor of 1.4, to 7.9 ppm. The equivalent dose delivered to the irradiated hand was calculated by Monte Carlo to be 11.9 mSv. In vivo bone aluminum measurement with the DD generator was found to be feasible among general population with an acceptable dose to the subject.

Abstract: A deuterium-deuterium (DD) neutron generator-based neutron activation analysis (NAA) system has been developed to quantify metals, including manganese (Mn), in bone in vivo. A DD neutron generator with a flux of up to 3*10(9) neutrons s(-1) was set up in our lab for this purpose. Optimized settings, including moderator, reflector, and shielding material and thickness, were selected based on Monte Carlo (MC) simulations conducted in our previous work. Hand phantoms doped with different Mn concentrations were irradiated using the optimized DD neutron generator irradiation system. The Mn characteristic γ-rays were collected by an HPGe detector system with 100% relative efficiency. The calibration line of the Mn/calcium (Ca) count ratio versus bone Mn concentration was obtained (R(2) = 0.99) using the hand phantoms. The detection limit (DL) was calculated to be about 1.05 μg g(-1) dry bone (ppm) with an equivalent dose of 85.4 mSv to the hand. The DL can be reduced to 0.74 ppm by using two 100% HPGe detectors. The whole body effective dose delivered to the irradiated subject was calculated to be about 17 μSv. Given the average normal bone Mn concentration of 1 ppm in the general population, this system is promising for in vivo bone Mn quantification in humans.
