Abstract: Abstract The MEG experiment, designed to search for the $${\mu ^+ \rightarrow \hbox {e}^+ \gamma }$$ μ+→e+γ decay, completed data-taking in 2013 reaching a sensitivity level of $${5.3\times 10^{-13}}$$ 5.3×10-13 for the branching ratio. In order to increase the sensitivity reach of the experiment by an order of magnitude to the level of $$6\times 10^{-14}$$ 6×10-14 , a total upgrade, involving substantial changes to the experiment, has been undertaken, known as MEG II. We present both the motivation for the upgrade and a detailed overview of the design of the experiment and of the expected detector performance.

Abstract: POLARBEAR-2b (PB-2b) is the second of three cryogenic receivers of the Simons Array cosmic microwave background polarization experiment. PB-2b contains over 7500 transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers cooled to 250 mK and read out using digital frequency-division multiplexing (DfMux). Stray impedance in the DfMux circuit obscures TES characterization and affects TES dynamic behavior. In order to accurately characterize TESs, it is necessary to account for stray impedance in the bias circuit. We define a stray impedance model, and we describe the technique used to measure model parameters in situ and to remove their effects on TES characterization. We use the same model to predict TES dynamic behavior and show good agreement between data and the model.

3. A preliminary investigation on the effect of immersive consumption contexts on food-evoked emotions using facial expressions and subjective ratings

Abstract: Previous studies have investigated effects of consumption contexts on food experiences using actual real-life contexts and recreated immersive contexts. The results typically show that food is experienced differently depending on the context. It is not clear whether context effects on food experiences are independent of the effects of specific foods. E.g., are all foods experienced more positive in a nice sushi restaurant or only the foods that have strong associations (congruent) with this context, such as sushi? A previous study with recreated beach and sushi restaurant contexts, demonstrated no effect of congruency on liking of the tasted foods. To verify whether the lack of congruency effects was caused by the relatively insensitivity of explicit response measures such as liking, implicit (facial expressions) and explicit (scores) measures of food-evoked and general emotions were used in the same study and those results are reported here.Thirty-five participants were exposed repeatedly in seven sessions in one of two recreated contexts (sushi restaurant and beach) to foods that were either congruent (sushi in the sushi restaurant, popsicle at the beach, and iced tea) or incongruent (sushi at the beach and popsicle in the sushi restaurant) with the recreated context. Contexts were switched in an eighth and final session. Facial expressions and self-reported food-evoked emotions showed significant effects of context and foods (p < 0.05). General and food-evoked self-reported emotions were closely related, and showed systematic changes over repeated exposure, immersive context and food. No effect of food-context congruency was found, i.e., effects of contexts and foods on self-reported food-evoked emotions and facial expressions were independent. Food-evoked emotions were more positively valenced in the beach context compared to the restaurant context irrespective of foods (p < 0.05). After repeated exposure, self-reported emotions of boredom were intensified and those of interest were reduced, irrespective of food and context. A subsequent switch to a different context did not produce additional effects on emotions. Facial expressions also varied independently with food and context but were not affected by repeated exposure and were affected by the switch to a different context.In conclusion, the results show that 1) physical and social consumption contexts that are recreated in the laboratory affect general and food-evoked emotions measured by self-reported emotions and facial expressions, 2) foods and contexts affect food-evoked self-reported emotions and facial expressions independently , and 3) results of self-reported food-evoked emotions and facial expressions showed similarities but also differences pointing to the added value of measuring facial expressions.

Abstract: The Simons Observatory (SO) is a cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment from the Atacama Desert in Chile comprising three small-aperture telescopes (SATs) and one large-aperture telescope (LAT). In total, SO will field over 60,000 transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers in six spectral bands centered between 27 and 280 GHz in order to achieve the sensitivity necessary to measure or constrain numerous cosmological quantities. In this work, we focus on the SATs which are optimized to search for primordial gravitational waves that are detected as parity-odd polarization patterns called a B-modes on degree scales in the CMB. Each SAT employs a single optics tube with TES arrays operating at 100 mK. The high throughput optics system has a 42 cm aperture and a 35-degree field of view coupled to a 36 cm diameter focal plane. The optics consist of three metamaterial anti-re ection coated silicon lenses. Cryogenic ring baffles with engineered blackbody absorbers are installed in the optics tube to minimize the stray light. The entire optics tube is cooled to 1 K. A cryogenic continuously rotating half-wave plate near the sky side of the aperture stop helps to minimize the effect of atmospheric uctuations. The telescope warm baffling consists of a forebaffle, an elevation stage mounted co-moving shield, and a fixed ground shield that together control the far side-lobes and mitigates ground-synchronous systematics. Abstract: POLARBEAR is a Cosmic Microwave Background radiation (CMB) polarization experiment that is located in the Atacama Desert in Chile. The scientific goals of the experiment are to characterize the B-mode signal from gravitational lensing, as well as to search for B-mode signals created by primordial gravitational waves (PGWs). Polarbear started observations in 2012 and has published a series of results. These include the first measurement of a nonzero B-mode angular auto-power spectrum at sub-degree scales where the dominant signal is gravitational lensing of the CMB. In addition, we have achieved the first measurement of crosscorrelation between the lensing potential, which was reconstructed from the CMB polarization data alone by Polarbear, and the cosmic shear field from galaxy shapes by the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey. In 2014, we installed a continuously rotating half-wave plate (CRHWP) at the focus of the primary mirror to search for PGWs and demonstrated the control of low-frequency noise. We have found that the low-frequency B-mode power in the combined dataset with the Planck high-frequency maps is consistent with Galactic dust foreground, thus placing an upper limit on the tensor-to-scalar ratio of r < 0.90 at the 95% confidence level after marginalizing over the foregrounds.

Abstract: We describe the Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) used for in-field testing of the POLARBEAR receiver, an experiment located in the Atacama Desert of Chile which measures the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization. The POLARBEAR-FTS (PB-FTS) is a Martin-Puplett interferometer designed to couple to the Huan Tran Telescope (HTT) on which the POLARBEAR receiver is installed. The PB-FTS measured the spectral response of the POLARBEAR receiver with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) $>20$ for $\sim$69% of the focal plane detectors due to three features: a high throughput of 15.1 steradian cm$^{2}$, optimized optical coupling to the POLARBEAR optics using a custom designed output parabolic mirror, and a continuously modulated output polarizer. The PB-FTS parabolic mirror is designed to mimic the shape of the 2.5 m-diameter HTT primary reflector which allows for optimum optical coupling to the POLARBEAR receiver, reducing aberrations and systematics. One polarizing grid is placed at the output of the PB-FTS, and modulated via continuous rotation. This modulation allows for decomposition of the signal into different harmonics that can be used to probe potentially pernicious sources of systematic error in a polarization-sensitive instrument. The high throughput and continuous output polarizer modulation features are unique compared to other FTS calibrators used in the CMB field. In-field characterization of the POLARBEAR receiver was accomplished using the PB-FTS in April 2014. We discuss the design, construction, and operation of the PB-FTS and present the spectral characterization of the POLARBEAR receiver. We introduce future applications for the PB-FTS in the next-generation CMB experiment, the Simons Array.

Abstract: The MEG experiment, designed to search for the μ+→e+γ decay, completed data-taking in 2013 reaching a sensitivity level of 5.3×10^−13 for the branching ratio. In order to increase the sensitivity reach of the experiment by an order of magnitude to the level of 6×10^−14, a total upgrade, involving substantial changes to the experiment, has been undertaken, known as MEG II. We present both the motivation for the upgrade and a detailed overview of the design of the experiment and of the expected detector performance

Abstract: The MEG experiment makes use of one of the world's most intense low energy muon beams, in order to search for the lepton flavour violating process $\mu^{+} \rightarrow {\rm e}^{+} \gamma$. We determined the residual beam polarization at the thin stopping target, by measuring the asymmetry of the angular distribution of Michel decay positrons as a function of energy. The initial muon beam polarization at the production is predicted to be $P_{\mu} = -1$ by the Standard Model (SM) with massless neutrinos. We estimated our residual muon polarization to be $P_{\mu} = -0.85 \pm 0.03 ~ {\rm (stat)} ~ { }^{+ 0.04}_{-0.05} ~ {\rm (syst)}$ at the stopping target, which is consistent with the SM predictions when the depolarizing effects occurring during the muon production, propagation and moderation in the target are taken into account. Abstract: A search for the decay μ + → e + γ , performed at PSI and based on data from the initial three months of operation of the MEG experiment, yields an upper limit on the branching ratio of BR ( μ + → e + γ ) ⩽ 2.8 × 10 − 11 (90% C.L.). This corresponds to the measurement of positrons and photons from ∼ 10 14 stopped μ + -decays by means of a superconducting positron spectrometer and a 900 litre liquid xenon photon detector.

Abstract: The MEG (Mu to Electron Gamma) experiment has been running at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), Switzerland since 2008 to search for the decay μ +→e+ γ by using one of the most intense continuous μ + beams in the world. This paper presents the MEG components: the positron spectrometer, including a thin target, a superconducting magnet, a set of drift chambers for measuring the muon decay vertex and the positron momentum, a timing counter for measuring the positron time, and a liquid xenon detector for measuring the photon energy, position and time. The trigger system, the read-out electronics and the data acquisition system are also presented in detail. Abstract: Effects of superposition of a low-frequency (0.1 to 50 Hz) voltage and a high-frequency 2 kHz voltage on the growth of water trees in polyethylene are examined. It has become clear that both the number of total voltage zero-crossings during the whole voltage application period and the number of consecutive voltage zero-crossings in the instant of the polarity reversal of the low-frequency voltage play important roles in the length and shape of water trees. Namely, the water tree length becomes longer as the number of total zero-crossings increases. Furthermore, among the voltages with the same number of total zero-crossings, the length becomes even longer with a prolonged shape in the direction of electric field as the number of consecutive zero-crossings increases. Effects of superposition of a high-frequency voltage onto a dc voltage are also examined. In this case, the dc voltage seems not to have any influence to the tree growth. By assuming the presence of space charge around the water-tree tip, the effective zero-crossings become only sensitive to the high-frequency component. Therefore, this result also indicates that the number of voltage reversals at the tree tip plays a crucial role in the growth of water trees.

Abstract: The MEG experiment at PSI searches for the decay μ→eγ at a level of ≈10^−13 on the branching ratio BR(μ→eγ/μ→tot), well beyond the present experimental limit (BR≤1.2×10^−11) and is sensitive to the predictions of SUSY-GUT theories. To reach this goal the experiment uses one of the most intense continuous surface muon beams available (≈10^8μ/s) and relies on advanced technology (LXe calorimetry, a gradient-field superconducting spectrometer as well as flexible and powerful trigger and acquisition systems). In order to maintain the highest possible energy, time and spatial resolutions for such detector, frequent calibration and monitoring, using a Cockcroft–Walton proton accelerator, are required. The proton beam is brought to the centre of MEG by a special bellows insertion system and travels in a direction opposite to the one of the normal μ-beam. Protons interact with a lithium tetraborate (Li2B4O7) nuclear target and produce one γ (17.6 MeV) from the reaction 3-7 Li(p, γ)8-4 or two coincident γs (11.67 and 4.4 MeV) from the reaction 11-5 B(p, γ)12-6 C*. The 17.6 MeV γ is used for calibrating and monitoring the LXe calorimeter (σEγ/Eγ=3.85±0.15% at 17.6 MeV) while the coincident 11.67 and 4.4 MeV γs are used to measure the relative timing of the calorimeter and the spectrometer timing counters (σ_delta_t=0.450±0.015ns).

Abstract: Preparation of writing-head cores by the electroless plating method was investigated. Electroless CoFeB plating has poor selectivity of deposition onto a patterned surface; that is, film deposition occurred not only on the catalytic surface but also on the photoresist, which had no catalyst. To improve the selectivity of electroless CoFeB plating, the effects of agitation and additives were investigated. Deposition onto the photoresist was decreased by agitation, but was still observed. Some organic additives were found to inhibit deposition onto the photoresist, and CoFeB plating from a bath including that additive had good selectivity. By combining of these two methods, it may be possible to obtain coherent deposition onto the patterned surface of a writing-head core.

Abstract: The expression of proinflammatory and immunoregulatory cytokines rapidly increases in the lungs after hemorrhage, and such alterations contribute to the frequent development of acute inflammatory lung injury in this setting. Blood loss also produces elevations in catecholamine concentrations in the pulmonary and systemic circulation. In the present experiments, we used alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptor blockade to examine in vivo interactions between hemorrhage-induced adrenergic stimulation and pulmonary cytokine expression. Treatment of mice with the alpha-adrenergic receptor antagonist phentolamine prevented not only the elevation in mRNA levels of IL-1beta, TNF-alpha, and TGF-beta1, the increase in IL-1beta protein, but also the activation of nuclear factor (NF)-KB and cyclic AMP response element binding protein, which occurred in lung cells of untreated animals during the first hour after hemorrhage. In contrast, treatment before hemorrhage with the beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist propranolol was associated with increases in mRNA levels for IL-1beta, TNF-alpha, and TGF-beta1, which were greater than those present in untreated hemorrhaged mice, and did not prevent hemorrhage-associated increases in lung IL-1beta protein. Treatment with propranolol prevented hemorrhage-induced phosphorylation of cyclic AMP response element binding protein, but increased hemorrhage-associated activation of NF-KB. These results demonstrate that hemorrhage initially increases pulmonary cytokine expression through alpha- but not beta-adrenergic stimulation, and suggest that such alpha-adrenergic-mediated effects occur through activation of the transcriptional regulatory factor NF-kappaB.

Abstract: The analysis of a combined data set, totaling $3.6\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{14}$ stopped muons on target, in the search for the lepton flavor violating decay ${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{e}^{+}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ is presented. The data collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut show no excess of events compared to background expectations and yield a new upper limit on the branching ratio of this decay of $5.7\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}13}$ (90% confidence level). This represents a four times more stringent limit than the previous world best limit set by MEG.

Abstract: Taking forest areas specified according lo information on the National digital land data, the vapour pressure deficit at leaf temperature and the degree of stomatal opening were presumed using the vegetation index of forest areas derived from Landsat TM data. Assuming the principle of Monin-Obukhov similarity is correct, a new method for calculating the latent and sensible heat fluxes of regional forests was proposed taking into account the difference in Leaf Area Index. The relation of the increase of latent heat flux with the vegetation index was obtained, and the plane distribution of latent and sensible heat fluxes in large areas is calculated.

Abstract: The temperature decrease in thermal environment by green effect due to latent heat release has been measured and analyzed at two places in Tokyo area; Tama campus of Chuo University and Kitaterao electric power substation, Kawasaki.Surface temperature of plant canopy layer was lower about 5°C compared with the wall temperature of a neighboring building and with temperature of paved road, and was held almost constant irrespective of the temporal changes in humidity and velocity of surrounding air flow.Temperature of wall and road wetted by pouring water on them decreased to the level of leaf temperature of plant. The fact shows that the green effect is due to the latent heat release by evapotranspiration.

However, the electric current that is applied to weaken the magnetic field has to be increased because the induced electromotive force is increased in proportion to the revolution speed. Therefore, the motor efficiency decrease at high revolution speeds. In this study, we developed a variable magnetic flux motor (VFM). That has a control method for mechanically weakening the magnetic field in order to improve the motor efficiency at high revolution speeds. Compared to a conventional motor, the VFM has a wider driving region. Additionally, its high efficiency region expands to the high revolution speed region. At a high revolution speed of 4500 min"1, the prototype VFM can improve motor efficiency by 13%.

Abstract: We report the synthesis of infinite-layer LaNiO2 thin films by metal organic decomposition. Our work is aimed to synthesize perovskite-like oxides with 3d9 electronic configuration, which is common to high-Tc copper oxides. The 3d9 configuration is very rare in oxides other than cuprates. Ni1+ oxides, even though Ni1+ is an unusual oxidation state, may be one of very few candidates. One example of the Ni1+ phases is infinite-layer LaNiO2. The bulk synthesis of LaNiO2 is difficult, but we demonstrate in this article that the thin-film synthesis of LaNiO2 by metal organic decomposition is rather easy. This is due to the advantage of thin films with a large-surface-to-volume ratio, which makes oxygen diffusion prompt. Abstract: The final results of the search for the lepton flavour violating decay $$\mathrm {\mu }^+ \rightarrow \mathrm {e}^+ \mathrm {\gamma }$$ based on the full dataset collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut in the period 2009–2013 and totalling $$7.5\times 10^{14}$$ stopped muons on target are presented. No significant excess of events is observed in the dataset with respect to the expected background and a new upper limit on the branching ratio of this decay of $$ \mathcal{B} (\mu ^+ \rightarrow \mathrm{e}^+ \gamma ) < 4.2 \times 10^{-13}$$ (90 % confidence level) is established, which represents the most stringent limit on the existence of this decay to date.

Abstract: Recently, preventing environmental pollutions, Pb-free solders are about to replace Sn-Pb eutectic solders. Sn-Ag-Cu alloys are leading candidates for Pb-free solders. However, Sn-Ag-Cu alloys were not enough to meet severe board level reliability requirements. In particular, thermal fatigue failure still has the problem. The interfacial strength decreases with intermetallic compounds (IMC) formation between solders and electric pads. Because IMC is brittle, the growth of IMC strongly affects the reliability of solder joints. However, for lead-free solder joints, the effects of IMC layer development on fatigue strength have not been studied well. In this study, in order to inhibit the IMC formation, 6 kinds of nano particles of metal (Cu, Ni, Co, Pt, In, Sb) were added to the solders based on Sn-Ag. We carried out board level fatigue tests and observed and conducted elemental analysis of cross-section surface of solders. And then we considered the relation of the fatigue life of several lead free solder joints and the change of the IMC layer by thermal aging. We aged the specimens in the isothermal chamber under 150degC for 0 to 20 days. As a result of the fatigue tests, about the solder including nickel, the fatigue life after aging is longer and fatigue strength reduction after aging is more lowered than the other solders. And the results of observation showed that IMC layers grow grained and the irregularity of interface between the IMC layers and the solder layers is smaller about the solder including nickel. So we consider that that improves resistance to crack advance, and then the solder showed the higher fatigue strength.

Abstract: In this paper soft magnetic FeCo films were electrodeposited in two different electroplating baths with pulse current, one contained NaCl, the other contained KCl as electroconductivity investor. This however, have slightly lower B/sub s/ than that of the sputtered film. One of the reasons for the lower B/sub s/ is thought to be the effect of impurities. In order to clarify the effect of impurities of B/sub s/ we have investigated the microstructures and the local chemistries of the FeCo films. Magnetic properties were measured by a VSM and a SQUID magnetometer and the microstructures were characterized by a transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and a three-dimensional atom probe (3DAP). Results show that low B/sub s/ is attributed to the low magnetization in the grain boundaries.

Abstract: We have been examining the effects of superposition of a high-frequency voltage to various voltages such as dc, low-frequency (0.1 to 5 Hz), and power-frequency voltages on the development of water trees in polyethylene. We have made clear that the number of voltage zero-crossings is a decisive factor in the length of water trees. In the present research, the water tree shapes grown under the various superposed voltages were carefully observed. As a result, we have confirmed that the water tree tends to become a hand-like shape if the frequency of the lower-frequency component is between 0 and 0.5 Hz, and become spherical if the frequency is higher than 1.0 Hz. This result is explained by assuming that the growth of water trees is governed by the effective number of consecutive voltage zero-crossings at the tip of the water tree.

Abstract: In order to examine the applicability of biodegradable polymers to the fields of electrical insulation, several dielectric properties of two typical biodegradable polymers, polylactic acid (PLA) and starch ester (SE), are examined. A fairly larger amount of space charge is accumulated in both polymers in comparison to low-density polyethylene (LDPE). This seems partly due to the presence of hydroxyl and carbonyl groups in these polymers. Permittivity and conductivity are higher in SE than PLA that has the values close to those of LDPE. The dielectric breakdown strength is lower in SE and is higher in PLA than LDPE. As for the resistance to photodegradation by ultraviolet photons, SE is stronger than PLA, although the two are much inferior to LDPE.

Abstract: Photoluminescence (PL) spectra in low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) induced by irradiation of ultraviolet photons are examined. The samples were pre-irradiated by the ultraviolet photons under different atmospheres (air, O/sub 2/, and vacuum) in order to induce photochemical reactions. Two PL bands appear around 3.6 and 4.2 eV in LDPE. Their intensities decrease with the progress of the pre-irradiation regardless of the irradiation atmosphere. The two PLs are considered to be due to conjugated double bonds present in the antioxidant and impurities. A new PL band appears at 2.9 eV in LDPE if the sample was pre-irradiated in vacuum. This PL is considered to be due to photoinduced conjugated double bonds. In XLPE, a PL band different from the ones observed in LDPE appears at 3.1 eV. It is considered that the crosslinking byproducts are responsible for this band.

This thin film formation method has the advantage of fabricating smaller and finer head cores, which can realize higher recording density compared with conventional techniques of fabricating head cores. For higher-frequency recording, the electroless CoNiFeB film should have higher resistivity whilst keeping high B/sub s/ for suppressing eddy-current losses. Therefore, we investigated increasing the resistivity of high B/sub s/ CoNiFeB soft magnetic thin films prepared by electroless deposition.

Abstract: Summary form only given. Argon inductively coupled plasma has been successfully used as an ion source for mass spectrometry (Ar ICP-MS). Ar ICP-MS is a multielement technique with excellent detection limits and the added ability to provide isotopic information. However, the use of argon as a plasma gas has some limitations. The argon plasma cannot generate substantial quantities of elements possessing high ionization energies, for example halogens. Major argon-related plasma species preclude the detection of /sup 40/Ca/sup +/, /sup 56/Fe/sup +/, /sup 80/Se/sup +/, which are the most abundant ions of Ca, Fe and Se. To overcome these problems of Ar ICP-MS, He ICP-MS device was developed. Because the ionization energy of He (24.6 eV) is higher than that of Ar (15.8 eV), the use of He ICP as an ion source for MS has potential of enhancing the degree of ionization for every element, in particular for nonmetals. Furthermore, helium is low mass (4 amu) and nearly mono isotopic abundance. To generate stable helium plasma in the atmospheric pressure, we designed and manufactured the enhanced vortex flow torch. A stable doughnut-type helium plasma can be produced when using 27 to 40 MHz RF input power that is larger than 500 W. The helium excitation temperature, rotational temperature and electron number density are 4100 K, 2200 K and 0.75/spl times/10/sup 14/ cm/sup -3/, respectively at 900 W of RF input power.

Most shaft furnaces producing sponge iron, however, have been designed empirically up to the present. In order to optimize operations a mathematical model has been developed to be applied to shaft furnace design. The model, whose reduction rate equations are derived from the three-interface model, involves both mass and heat balances. The model's rate parameters were determined according to the parameter fitting method, so that calculated values might agree, as closely as possible, with measured values in an experimental shaft furnace with an inside diameter of 0.25 m and a reduction zone height of 2.7 m. Commercial applicability of the mathematical model was also confirmed by simulations in an actual shaft furnace.

Abstract: A reproducible model of thromboembolism in the rat was developed and the temporal relationship between hydrogen clearance, regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and power spectral-analyzed electroencephalographic (EEG) activity explored for up to four hours postinsult. Sixteen rats were subjected to right internal carotid artery homologous blood embolization after electrocautery of the pterygopalatine artery. Four rats were subjected to sham operation. Cerebral angiography before and for up to four hours postinsult was used to verify the distal migration and fragmentation of the emboli. Preembolic mean rCBF was 62 +/- 9 ml . 100g-1 . min-1 and 65 +/- 12 ml . 100g-1 . min-1 in the embolized and contralateral sides, respectively. Based upon the distribution of the emboli at sacrifice, the experimental group of 12 rats fell into three subgroups: unilateral proximal embolism, n = 8; unilateral peripheral embolism, n = 3; and bilateral proximal embolism, n = 1. In unilateral proximal embolism the mean rCBF in the embolized hemisphere ranged between 10 and 20 ml . 100g-1 . min-1 and correlated well with changes in EEG power spectra. In unilateral peripheral embolism, the mean rCBF in the embolized hemisphere fell significantly 30 min postembolism. It returned progressively towards preembolic values as the embolic clots migrated distally and fragmented. Despite the restoration of rCBF, recovery of EEG activity appeared to be delayed. Our results did not show luxury perfusion after embolic insults. The time course for the reopening of the embolized artery and the delay in recovery of neuronal function (i.e., EEG activity) relative to the restoration of rCBF are discussed.

Abstract: We report a 71-year-old woman who was initially admitted because of a ruptured internal carotid aneurysm, and found to have an aneurysm of the terminal portion (A5 portion) of pericallosal artery. Both of the aneurysms were surgically treated at one stage operation. A saccular aneurysm of the pericallosal artery was verified at operation. Right internal carotid angiography disclosed that medial part of the right anterior cerebral hemisphere was supplied by the right callosomarginal artery, and that unpaired pericallosal artery made a trifurcation at A5 portion, where the saccular aneurysm arose. According to Baptista's classification, anomaly of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA) in this patient was bihemispheric ACA type. Distal ACA aneurysms almost always locate at or near the genu of corpus callosum, either in pericallosal-callosomarginal or in pericallosal-frontopolar junction. In reviewing the literature, we were able to find 14 cases, including ours, of aneurysms located beyond either pericallosal-callosomarginal junction or the genu of corpus callosum. Also the possible role of hemodynamic stress caused by vascular anomaly for aneurysm formation are discussed.

Abstract: Ischemic brain injury affects the content and metabolism of brain monomines. Our aim was to know the time course of changes in regional cerebral catecholamines during focal cerebral ischemia, and whether focal cerebral ischemia may affect the metabolism of catecholamines in distant area of the brain. Methods Fifty-five rats were subjected to occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) on the olfactory tract, under halothane anesthesia. Fourteen animals were sham-operated group. Animals were decapitated at 1/2, 1,2,3,6,12 and 24 hours post-occlusion (PO), respectively. The brains were removed, and the brain structures dissected out include bilateral corpus striatum, cerebral cortex (MCA territory) and cerebellar hemisphere. Catecholamines were extracted by alumina procedure, and determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. Results Dopamine (DA) contents, in ipsilateral corpus striatum and cerebral cortex to the ischemia, decreased at 1 hour PO, and reached, at 6 hours PO, to 40% of control value in corpus striatum and 30% in cerebral cortex, respectively. After 6 hours PO, DA remained low. Norepinephrine (NE) content in the ipsilateral corpus striatum gradually reduced and reached to 60% of control value at 24 hours PO. NE in the ipsilateral cerebral cortex decreased to 50% of control at 1 hour PO, and thereafter remained reduced. In the contralateral corpus striatum and cerebral cortex, either DA or NE showed no significant changes, except 1/2 hour PO. NE contents in bilateral cerebral cortex showed a transient increase at 1/2 hour PO. Abstract: Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome with hemicranial hypertrophy and macrodactyly is reported. The patient was a 3-year-old Japanese woman with an extensive nevus flammeus which extended over the right side of the neck, axilla, upper arm, and leg. Her right extremities were longer and thicker than left, and showed apparent macrodactyly in the right hand. Her skin of right side body was irregular, rough surface and was pigmented prominently. Hyperthermia was present in the hypertrophic limbs, but hyperhidrosis was none. She had moderate mental retardation, delayed speech. Her hemicranial hypertrophy (same side as hypertrophic limbs) was examined by CT scan. Her right lateral ventricle was dilatated and cortical sulci was well demonstrated. Her right hemicranial volume was enlarged but rt-cerebral hemisphere was atrophic, and her infratentorial structures were symmetrical. Presented case, Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome with hemicranial hypertrophy, suggested the embryological theory affecting on trilaminar disc in embryonal stage as the genesis of this rare syndrome.

47. [Carotid dissecting aneurysm due to blunt (rubbing) injury of the Kendo protector]

Abstract: A case of dissecting aneurysm of the cervical internal carotid artery due to rare mechanism by non-penetrating injury is described. A 45-year-old right-handed man had complaints of the right lateral neck pain during exercise of KENDO wearing a tight headneck protector. Following sudden dysarthria and left hemiplegia, he developed loss of consciousness and generalized convulsion. Five hours after admission, he became alert and had no neurological deficits. Four days after these episodes, he loss visual acuity of the right eye, and a few days later he showed left hemiplegia, hypotension, hypersomnia and right-sides Horner's syndrome. Right retrograde brachial angiography revealed so-called "string sign" in the right extracranial internal carotid artery and delayed circulation in the right cerebral hemisphere. He was diagnosed as having traumatic dissecting aneurysm due to blunt (rubbing) injury. He was treated with STA-MCA anastomosis 3 weeks after the accident. Usually, carotid dissecting aneurysm due to blunt injury is produced by hyperextension and contralateral rotation of the neck or direct blow to the neck, but our case shows a possible mechanism of rubbing injury such as simple anteroposterior flexion under tight neck fixation.

Abstract: Free fatty acids (FFA) are liberated in large amounts in various types of cerebral insults (Bazan 1970) and recently have been implicated in the development of brain edema (Chan and Fishman 1981, 1982). Consistent with the role of calcium in the activation of phopholipase and lipase enzymes (Majewska et al. 1981) which are probably involved in FFA liberation during cerebral ischemia, we recently reported that the calcium antagonist gallopamil or D-600, significantly attenuates FFA liberation during decapitation global ischemia in rats (unpublished data). Furthermore, the efficacy of calcium antagonists in attenuating myocardial hypoxic or ischemic damage has been clearly demonstrated, whereas its effectiveness in brain edema has not been tested. Our aim in this study was to elevate the effectiveness of calcium antagonism with D-600 in attenuating the development of brain edema and intracranial hypertension induced by cold injury of the cortex in the cat.

50. [Biochemical studies of the cerebral ischemia in the rat--changes in cerebral free amino acids, catecholamines and uric acid]

Abstract: Changes in cerebral free amino acids, catecholamines and uric acid levels were explored for up to 7 days after cerebral ischemia in the rat. Fifty male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to occlusion of the middle cerebral artery on the olfactory tract, under halothane anesthesia. The animals were decapitated at 2, 4, 6, 12, 24 hours and 2, 3, 5, 7 days after the surgery, respectively. The brains were rapidly removed. The cerebral hemispheres were divided into right and left halves, and homogenized in sulfosalicylic acid solution. Free amino acids were analyzed by colormetric method. Cathecholamines and uric acid were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. Each parameters were measured both on the ischemic and contralateral hemispheres. The time course of changes in each parameters were observed by means of the ratio, which is the value of ischemic side divided by that of contralateral side. Free amino acids Dicarboxylic group; Decreases in glutamate and increases in glutamine suggest one aspect of detoxication of ammonia within the ischemia tissue. Monocarboxylic group; GABA, glycine, alanine were increased in early ischemic state, and gradually lowered to the normal values. These suggest the impairment of tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle in the ischemic tissues, since these amino acids are closely related to TCA cycle. Essential amino acids, except for tryptophan, were increased until the end of study. These increases suggest the utilization of essential amino acids for protein synthesis might be disturbed in the ischemic tissues. Catecholamines and precursors; Norepinephrine and dopamine were lowered gradually. On the other hand, phenylalanine and tyrosine were increased during ischemia.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
