Search

Short-timescale microlensing events are likely to be produced by substellar brown dwarfs (BDs), but it is difficult to securely identify BD lenses based on only event timescales $t_{\rm E}$ because short-timescale events can also be produced by stellar lenses with high relative lens-source proper motions. In this paper, we report three strong candidate BD-lens events found from the search for lensing events not only with short timescales ($t_{\rm E} \lesssim 6~{\rm days}$) but also with very small angular Einstein radii ($\theta_{\rm E}\lesssim 0.05~{\rm mas}$) among the events that have been found in the 2016--2019 observing seasons. These events include MOA-2017-BLG-147, MOA-2017-BLG-241, and MOA-2019-BLG-256, in which the first two events are produced by single lenses and the last event is produced by a binary lens. From the Bayesian analysis conducted with the combined $t_{\rm E}$ and $\theta_{\rm E}$ constraint, it is estimated that the lens masses of the individual events are $0.051^{+0.100}_{-0.027}~M_\odot$, $0.044^{+0.090}_{-0.023}~M_\odot$, and $0.046^{+0.067}_{-0.023}~M_\odot/0.038^{+0.056}_{-0.019}~M_\odot$ and the probability of the lens mass smaller than the lower limit of stars is $\sim 80\%$ for all events. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to determine the barriers that special educator teachers encounter when using iPads within the Life Skills classroom. The research investigates the experiences, frustrations, and barriers through educators’ perceptions of iPad implementation. The influence of these issues suggests why iPad usage is not a device that special education classrooms are using in a widespread daily manner. Exploration of iPads as an educational tool and as a communication device is also discussed, along with considerations of other communications systems such as Picture Exchange Communication Systems and Alternative and Augmented Communication Devices is considered. Recommendations for further possible research are also discussed.

We employ an asteroseismic model of L19-2, a relatively massive M? ∼ 0.75M and hot (Teff ∼ 12 100 K) pulsating DA (H-rich atmosphere) white dwarf star (DAV or ZZ Ceti variable), and use the observed values of the temporal rates of period change of its dominant pulsation modes (Π ∼ 113 s and Π ∼ 192 s), to derive a new constraint on the mass of the axion, the hypothetical non-barionic particle considered as a possible component of the dark matter of the Universe. If the asteroseismic model employed is an accurate representation of L19-2, then our results indicate hints of extra cooling in this star, compatible with emission of axions of mass ma cos2 β . 25 meV or an axion-electron coupling constant of gae . 7×10−13, Instituto de Astrofísica de La Plata, Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísicas

This paper describes three models developed through the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) SVC Task Force, to represent static Var systems (SVS) for power-flow and time-domain stability simulations. The goal was to develop a set of model structures that are generic, and can be easily parameterized to represent a variety of SVS systems. The term generic is used to imply a model structure that is not specific to a given vendor or equipment, and that is non-proprietary and public. These models have been implemented by several software vendors, and may soon be adopted by others. These models offer: 1) a suitable non-proprietary, not vendor specific set of models that can be used to evaluate SVS solution options for planning studies, and 2) the means to move away from the proliferation of user-written models that are becoming hard to manage in large interconnected power system models such as the WECC. The dissemination of the models and modeling documentation helps provide guidance to power system planners and operators about the latest SVS technologies and their application.

We have observed 7 new transits of the `hot Jupiter' WASP-5b using a 61 cm telescope located in New Zealand, in order to search for transit timing variations (TTVs) which can be induced by additional bodies existing in the system. When combined with other available photometric and radial velocity (RV) data, we find that its transit timings do not match a linear ephemeris; the best fit \chi^2 values is 32.2 with 9 degrees of freedom which corresponds to a confidence level of 99.982 % or 3.7 \sigma. This result indicates that excess variations of transit timings has been observed, due either to unknown systematic effects or possibly to real TTVs. The TTV amplitude is as large as 50 s, and if this is real, it cannot be explained by other effects than that due to an additional body or bodies. From the RV data, we put an upper limit on the RV amplitude caused by the possible secondary body (planet) as 21 m s^{-1}, which corresponds to its mass of 22-70 M_{Earth} over the orbital period ratio of the two planets from 0.2 to 5.0. From the TTVs data, using the numerical simulations, we place more stringent limits down to 2 M_{Earth} near 1:2 and 2:1 mean motion resonances (MMRs) with WASP-5b at the 3 \sigma level, assuming that the two planets are co-planer. We also put an upper limit on excess of Trojan mass as 43 M_{Earth} (3 \sigma) using both RV and photometric data. We also find that if the possible secondary planet has non- or a small eccentricity, its orbit would likely be near low-order MMRs. Further follow-up photometric and spectroscopic observations will be required to confirm the reality of the TTV signal, and results such as these will provide important information for the migration mechanisms of planetary systems., Comment: accepted for publication in PASJ, 30 pages, 8 figures, 8 tables

KPD 1930+2752 is a short-period pulsating subdwarf B (sdB) star. It is also an ellipsoidal variable with a known binary period just over two hours. The companion is most likely a white dwarf and the total mass of the system is close to the Chandresakhar limit. In this paper we report the results of Whole Earth Telescope (WET) photometric observations during 2003 and a smaller multisite campaign from 2002. From 355 hours of WET data, we detect 68 pulsation frequencies and suggest an additional 13 frequencies within a crowded and complex temporal spectrum between 3065 and 6343 $\mu$Hz (periods between 326 and 157 s). We examine pulsation properties including phase and amplitude stability in an attempt to understand the nature of the pulsation mechanism. We examine a stochastic mechanism by comparing amplitude variations with simulated stochastic data. We also use the binary nature of KPD 1930+2752 for identifying pulsation modes via multiplet structure and a tidally-induced pulsation geometry. Our results indicate a complicated pulsation structure that includes short-period ($\approx 16$ h) amplitude variability, rotationally split modes, tidally-induced modes, and some pulsations which are geometrically limited on the sdB star.

We report on the detection of an ~5900 s quasi-periodic variation in the extensive photometry of TX Col spanning 12 years. We discuss five different models to explain this period. We favour a mechanism where the quasi-periodic variation results from the beating of the Keplerian frequency of the `blobs' orbiting in the outer accretion disc with the spin frequency, and from modulated accretion of these `blobs' taking place in a shocked region near the disc/magnetosphere boundary.

International audience; The old nova DQ Herculis was the Whole Earth Telescope Northern Hemisphere target for the 1997 July campaign and was observed on four nights with the SARA 0.9 m telescope during 2003 June. We present updated ephemerides for the eclipse and 71 s timings. The Fourier transform displays power at the presumed white dwarf spin period of 71.0655 s, but no significant power at either 142 or 35.5 s. The mean pulsed light curve is obtained by folding on the orbital period modulus the mean ephemeris of the 71 s period, and from this we calculate an O-C phase diagram and amplitude versus orbital phase diagrams. In addition to the phase variations during eclipse ingress and egress, the WET data reveal significant phase variations outside of eclipse. These must result from the self-eclipse of a nonaxisymmetric disk. We simulated the disk in DQ Her using smoothed particle hydrodynamics. We improve our effective spatial signal-to-noise ratio by combining 250 snapshots of the N=20,000 phase space solution over time to obtain a 5 million particle ensemble disk. From the surface shape of the ensemble disk, the radius and vertical height above the midplane of the rim of the reprocessing region can be derived as a function of azimuthal angle. From this profile we can calculate the O-C phase and amplitude diagrams as a function of inclination angle. The calculated O-C diagrams are a remarkably good match to the observed phase and amplitude variations of the 71 s signal. The best match is for inclination angle 89.7d.

We report our analysis of the stability of pulsation periods in the DAV star (pulsating hydrogen atmosphere white dwarf) ZZ Ceti, also called R548. On the basis of observations that span 31 years, we conclude that the period 213.13 s observed in ZZ Ceti drifts at a rate dP/dt 5 (5.5 plus or minus 1.9) x 10(exp -15) ss(sup -1), after correcting for proper motion. Our results are consistent with previous P values for this mode and an improvement over them because of the larger time base. The characteristic stability timescale implied for the pulsation period is |P||P(raised dot)|greater than or equal to 1.2 Gyr, comparable to the theoretical cooling timescale for the star. Our current stability limit for the period 213.13 s is only slightly less than the present measurement for another DAV, G117-B15A, for the period 215.2 s, establishing this mode in ZZ Ceti as the second most stable optical clock known, comparable to atomic clocks and more stable than most pulsars. Constraining the cooling rate of ZZ Ceti aids theoretical evolutionary models and white dwarf cosmochronology. The drift rate of this clock is small enough that we can set interesting limits on reflex motion due to planetary companions.

The goal of the WET collaboration is to produce a photometric light curve as continuous and accurate as possible, given the weather and technical constraints. In order to join light curves from different observers, it is important that all observer’s clocks are accurately synchronised with Universal Time, and with a precision substantially better than one second. This requires vigilance and careful checking by the observer, who needs to be familiar with the instrument and how the integration intervals are determined. This is in particular important with the introduction of the more complex CCD photometers. Ideally each observer should have access to their own time source, and a GPS solution is recommended. It is also important that the information about timing peculiarities are carefully checked and recorded and passed on to the data analysts.

We carry out high-speed photometry on 20 of the shortest-period, detached white dwarf binaries known and discover systems with eclipses, ellipsoidal variations (due to tidal deformations of the visible white dwarf), and Doppler beaming. All of the binaries contain low-mass white dwarfs with orbital periods less than 4 hr. Our observations identify the first eight tidally distorted white dwarfs, four of which are reported for the first time here, which we use to put empirical constraints on the mass-radius relationship for extremely low-mass (, 14 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

The white dwarfs are promising laboratories for the study of cosmochronology and stellar evolution. Through observations of the pulsating white dwarfs, we can measure their internal structures and compositions, critical to understanding post-main-sequence evolution, along with their cooling rates, which will allow us to calibrate their ages directly. The most important set of white dwarf variables to measure are the oldest of the pulsators, the cool DA variables (DAVs), which have not been explored previously through asteroseismology due to their complexity and instability. Through a time-series photometry data set spanning 10 yr, we explore the pulsation spectrum of the cool DAV, G29-38 and find an underlying structure of 19 (not including multiplet components) normal-mode, probably l=1 pulsations amidst an abundance of time variability and linear combination modes. Modeling results are incomplete, but we suggest possible starting directions and discuss probable values for the stellar mass and hydrogen layer size. For the first time, we have made sense out of the complicated power spectra of a large-amplitude DA pulsator. We have shown that its seemingly erratic set of observed frequencies can be understood in terms of a recurring set of normal-mode pulsations and their linear combinations. With this result, we have opened the interior secrets of the DAVs to future asteroseismological modeling, thereby joining the rest of the known white dwarf pulsators.

We describe the development and applications of a new electronic structure method that uses a real-space grid as a basis. Multigrid techniques provide preconditioning and convergence acceleration at all length scales and therefore lead to particularly efficient algorithms. The salient points of our implementation include: (i) new compact discretization schemes in real space for systems with cubic, orthorhombic, and hexagonal symmetry and (ii) new multilevel algorithms for the iterative solution of Kohn–Sham and Poisson equations. The accuracy of the discretizations was tested by direct comparison with plane-wave calculations, when possible, and the results were in excellent agreement in all cases. These techniques are very suitable for use on massively parallel computers and in O(N) methods. Tests on the Cray-T3D have shown nearly linear scaling of the execution time up to the maximum number of processors (512). The above methodology was tested on a large number of systems, such as the C60 molecule, diamond, Si and GaN supercells, and quantum molecular dynamics simulations for Si. The seven intermediate passband filters of the Vilnius photometric system enable a more comprehensive and discriminating classification of stellar objects than is possible in broadband systems. To date, a lack of suitable standard stars has inhibited its use in the Southern Hemisphere. We have an established programme for extending the network of northern Vilnius standards into the southern skies. This paper briefly summarizes the characteristics of the Vilnius system, provides a synopsis of the data obtained on over 200 standard stars so far and presents preliminary CM and CC diagrams for the open cluster Omicron Velorum (IC2391).

Gravitational microlensing is not only a successful tool for discovering distant exoplanets, but it also enables characterization of the lens and source stars involved in the lensing event. In high magnification events, the lens caustic may cross over the source disk, which allows a determination of the angular size of the source and additionally a measurement of its limb darkening. When such extended-source effects appear close to maximum magnification, the resulting light curve differs from the characteristic Paczynski point-source curve. The exact shape of the light curve close to the peak depends on the limb darkening of the source. Dense photometric coverage permits measurement of the respective limb-darkening coefficients. In the case of microlensing event OGLE 2008-BLG-290, the K giant source star reached a peak magnification of about 100. Thirteen different telescopes have covered this event in eight different photometric bands. Subsequent light-curve analysis yielded measurements of linear limb-darkening coefficients of the source in six photometric bands. The best-measured coefficients lead to an estimate of the source effective temperature of about 4700 +100-200 K. However, the photometric estimate from colour-magnitude diagrams favours a cooler temperature of 4200 +-100 K. As the limb-darkening measurements, at least in the CTIO/SMARTS2 V and I bands, are among the most accurate obtained, the above disagreement needs to be understood. This paper describes the current status of the work being conducted by the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) SVC Task Force to develop generic power flow and time-domain stability models to represent all existing and future (modern) static Var systems (SVS) in the Western Interconnection. The intent is to have these models implemented by software vendors such as GE, Siemens PTI, Powertech Labs and others so that these models are then available to user's in WECC (and worldwide) for their use in system planning studies. The value of this exercise is three fold: (i) it provides suitable non-proprietary, non-vendor specific models that can be used to evaluate SVS solution options for planning studies, (ii) it helps to move away from the proliferation of user-written models that are becoming hard to manage in large interconnected power system models such as the WECC, and (iii) the dissemination of the models and modeling documentation helps to educate power system planners and operators about the latest SVS technologies and their application.

The mass function and statistics of binaries provide important diagnostics of the star formation process. Despite this importance, the mass function at low masses remains poorly known due to observational difficulties caused by the faintness of the objects. Here we report the microlensing discovery and characterization of a binary lens composed of very low-mass stars just above the hydrogen-burning limit. From the combined measurements of the Einstein radius and microlens parallax, we measure the masses of the binary components of $0.10\pm 0.01\ M_\odot$ and $0.09\pm 0.01\ M_\odot$. This discovery demonstrates that microlensing will provide a method to measure the mass function of all Galactic populations of very low mass binaries that is independent of the biases caused by the luminosity of the population., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

We analyze the extreme high-magnification microlensing event OGLE-2008-BLG-279, which peaked at a maximum magnification of A ~ 1600 on 30 May 2008. The peak of this event exhibits both finite-source effects and terrestrial parallax, from which we determine the mass of the lens, M_l=0.64 +/- 0.10 M_Sun, and its distance, D_l = 4.0 +/- 0.6. We rule out Jupiter-mass planetary companions to the lens star for projected separations in the range 0.5-20 AU. More generally, we find that this event was sensitive to planets with masses as small as 0.2 M_Earth ~= 2 M_Mars with projected separations near the Einstein ring (~3 AU)., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures, submitted to ApJ

We analyze OGLE-2007-BLG-050, a high magnification microlensing event (A ~ 432) whose peak occurred on 2 May, 2007, with pronounced finite-source and parallax effects. We compute planet detection efficiencies for this event in order to determine its sensitivity to the presence of planets around the lens star. Both finite-source and parallax effects permit a measurement of the angular Einstein radius \theta_E = 0.48 +/- 0.01 mas and the parallax \pi_E = 0.12 +/- 0.03, leading to an estimate of the lens mass M = 0.50 +/- 0.14 M_Sun and its distance to the observer D_L = 5.5 +/- 0.4 kpc. We are searching for new He atmosphere white dwarf pulsators (DBVs) based on the newly found white dwarf stars from the spectra obtained by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. DBVs pulsate at hotter temperature ranges than their better known cousins, the H atmosphere white dwarf pulsators (DAVs or ZZ Ceti stars). Since the evolution of white dwarf stars is characterized by cooling, asteroseismological studies of DBVs give us opportunities to study white dwarf structure at a different evolutionary stage than the DAVs. The hottest DBVs are thought to have neutrino luminosities exceeding their photon luminosities (Winget et al. 2004), a quantity measurable through asteroseismology. Therefore, they can also be used to study neutrino physics in the stellar interior. So far we have discovered nine new DBVs, doubling the number of previously known DBVs. We have developed a wide-field mosaic CCD camera, MOA-cam3, mounted at the prime focus of the Microlensing Observations in Astrophysics (MOA) 1.8-m telescope. The camera consists of ten E2V CCD4482 chips, each having 2kx4k pixels, and covers a 2.2 deg^2 field of view with a single exposure. The optical system is well optimized to realize uniform image quality over this wide field. The chips are constantly cooled by a cryocooler at -80C, at which temperature dark current noise is negligible for a typical 1-3 minute exposure. The CCD output charge is converted to a 16-bit digital signal by the GenIII system (Astronomical Research Cameras Inc.) and readout is within 25 seconds. Readout noise of 2--3 ADU (rms) is also negligible. We prepared a wide-band red filter for an effective microlensing survey and also Bessell V, I filters for standard astronomical studies. Microlensing studies have entered into a new era, which requires more statistics, and more rapid alerts to catch exotic light curves. PG 0014+067 is one of the most promising pulsating subdwarf B stars for seismic analysis, as it has a rich pulsation spectrum. The richness of its pulsations, however, poses a fundamental challenge to understanding the pulsations of these stars, as the mode density is too complex to be explained only with radial and nonradial low degree (l < 3) p-modes without rotational splittings. One proposed solution, for the case of PG 0014+067 in particular, assigns some modes with high degree (l=3). On the other hand, theoretical models of sdB stars suggest that they may retain rapidly rotating cores, and so the high mode density may result from the presence of a few rotationally-split triplet (l=1), quintuplet (l=2) modes, along with radial (l=0) p-modes. To examine alternative theoretical models for these stars, we need better frequency resolution and denser longitude coverage. Therefore, we observed this star with the Whole Earth Telescope for two weeks in October 2004. In this paper we report the results of Whole Earth Telescope observations of the pulsating subdwarf B star PG 0014+067. We find that the frequencies seen in PG 0014+067 do not appear to fit any theoretical model currently available; however, we find a simple empirical relation that is able to match all of the well-determined frequencies in this star., 19 pages, preprint of paper accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Iron metabolism is essential for cell function and potentially toxic because iron can catalyze oxygen radical production. Malaria-attributable anemia and iron deficiency anemia coincide as being treatable diseases in the developing world. In absolute amounts, more than 95% of Plasmodium metal biochemistry occurs in the acidic digestive vacuole where heme released from hemoglobin catabolism forms heme crystals. The antimalarial quinolines interfere with crystallization. Despite the completion of the Plasmodium genome, many 'gene gaps' exist in components of the metal pathways described in mammalian or yeast cells. Present evidence suggests that parasite bioavailable iron originates from a labile erythrocyte cytosolic pool rather than from abundant heme iron. Indeed the parasite has to make its own heme within two separate organelles, the mitochondrion and the apicomplast. Paradoxically, despite the abundance of iron within the erythrocyte, iron chelators are cytocidal to the Plasmodium parasite. Hemozoin has become a sensitive biomarker for laser desorption mass spectrometry detection of Plasmodium infection in both mice and humans.

We report our measurement of the rate of change of period with time dP/dt for the 215 s periodicity in the pulsating white dwarf G 117-B15A, the most stable optical clock known. After 31 years of observations, we have finally obtained a 4 sigma measurement dP/dt_observed = (4.27 +/- 0.80) x 10^{-15} s/s. Taking into account the proper-motion effect of dP/dt_pm = (7.0 +/- 2.0) x 10^{-16} s/s, we obtain a rate of change of period with time of dP/dt = (3.57 +/- 0.82) x 10^{-15} s/s. This value is consistent with the cooling rate in our white dwarf models only for cores of C or C/O. With the refinement of the models, the observed rate of period change can be used to accurately measure the ratio of C/O in the core of the white dwarf., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures

BPM 37093 is the only hydrogen-atmosphere white dwarf currently known which has sufficient mass (~ 1.1 M_sun) to theoretically crystallize while still inside the ZZ Ceti instability strip (T_eff ~ 12,000 K). As a consequence, this star represents our first opportunity to test crystallization theory directly. If the core is substantially crystallized, then the inner boundary for each pulsation mode will be located at the top of the solid core rather than at the center of the star, affecting mainly the average period spacing. This is distinct from the "mode trapping" caused by the stratified surface layers, which modifies the pulsation periods more selectively. In this paper we report on Whole Earth Telescope observations of BPM 37093 obtained in 1998 and 1999. We report a measurement of limb darkening of a solar-like star in the very high magnification microlensing event MOA 2002-BLG-33. A 15 hour deviation from the light curve profile expected for a single lens was monitored intensively in V and I passbands by five telescopes spanning the globe. Our modelling of the light curve showed the lens to be a close binary system whose centre-of-mass passed almost directly in front of the source star. The source star was identified as an F8-G2 main sequence turn-off star. The measured stellar profiles agree with current stellar atmosphere theory to within ~4% in two passbands. WOS: 000182039700036, We have acquired new time series photometry of the two pulsating DB white dwarf stars KUV 05134+2605 and PG 1654+160 with the Whole Earth Telescope. Additional single-site photometry is also presented. We use all these data plus all available archival measurements to study the temporal behaviour of the pulsational amplitudes and frequencies of these stars for the first time. We demonstrate that both KUV 05134+2605 and PG 1654+160 pulsate in many modes, the amplitudes of which are variable in time; some frequency variability of PG 1654+160 is also indicated. Beating of multiple pulsation modes cannot explain our observations; the amplitude variability must therefore be intrinsic. We cannot find stable modes to be used for determinations of the evolutionary period changes of the stars. Some of the modes of PG 1654+160 appear at the same periods whenever detected. The mean spacing of these periods (approximate to40 s) suggests that they are probably caused by non-radial gravity-mode pulsations of spherical degree l = 1. If so, PG 1654+160 has a mass around 0.6 M.. The time-scales of the amplitude variability of both stars (down to two weeks) are consistent with theoretical predictions of resonant mode coupling, a conclusion which might however be affected by the temporal distribution of our data.

The helium atmosphere white dwarf EC 20058-5234 (QU Tel, WD 2006-523) is the second brightest pulsating DB white dwarf; the class prototype GD 358 is the brightest. This object was discovered during the Edinburgh Cape survey of faint blue stars (Stobie et al., 1997) and its properties were first reported by Koen et al. (1995).

We describe observations carried out by the MOA group of the Galactic Bulge during 2000 that were designed to detect efficiently gravitational microlensing of faint stars in which the magnification is high and/or of short duration. These events are particularly useful for studies of extra-solar planets and faint stars. Approximately 17 degrees square were monitored at a sampling rate of up to 6 times per night. The images were analysed in real-time using a difference imaging technique. Twenty microlensing candidates were detected, of which 8 were alerted to the microlensing community whilst in progress. Approximately half of the candidates had high magnifications (>~10), at least one had very high magnification (>~50), and one exhibited a clear parallax effect. The details of these events are reported here, together with details of the on-line difference imaging technique. One hundred and forty six long-period red variable stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) from the three year MOA project database were analysed. A careful periodic analysis was performed on these stars and a catalogue of their magnitudes, colours, periods and amplitudes is presented. We convert our blue and red magnitudes to $K$ band values using 19 oxygen-rich stars. A group of red short-period stars separated from the Mira sequence has been found on a (log P, K) diagram. They are located at the short period side of the Mira sequence consistent with the work of Wood and Sebo (1996). There are two interpretations for such stars; a difference in pulsation mode or a difference in chemical composition. We investigated the properties of these stars together with their colour, amplitude and periodicity. We conclude that they have small amplitudes and less regular variability. They are likely to be higher mode pulsators. A large scatter has been also found on the long period side of the (log P, K) diagram. This is possibly a systematic spread given that the blue band of our photometric system covers both standard B and V bands and affects carbon-rich stars., Comment: 19 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The identification of the novel candidal species, C. dubliniensis, from oral swab studies of HIV-seropositive and -seronegative individuals has led to speculation that such a species may also reside in the oral cavity of other patient groups. In this study involvement of the newly described species, C. dubliniensis, was investigated in oral carriage and disease in 414 insulin-using diabetes mellitus patients. Seventy-seven percent of the diabetic patients carried candidal species in the oral cavity. C. albicans was the most commonly identified candidal species. This was followed by C. dubliniensis, which was isolated on 64 occasions. Colonisation with multiple candidal species was common, and C. dubliniensis was present in both carriage and disease states. Seven patients without signs of oral disease had C. dubliniensis isolated as the sole candidal species, while the same species was associated with various forms of oral candidosis in six patients.

Allogeneic blood transfusion is associated with an increased risk of infection and higher cancer recurrence rates. Previous research has shown that blood transfusion results in multiple immune effects, including cytokine alterations. The purpose of this study was to measure the long term kinetics of splenocyte cytokine production in transfused mice.Balb/c mice received either syngeneic transfusion (Syn-BT) or allogeneic transfusion (Allo-BT) from C3H-HeN mice. Splenocyte production of IL-2, IL-6, IL-10, and IFN-gamma was quantitated by ELISA on post-transfusion days 5, 10, 21, and 30.Both Allo-BT and Syn-BT produced significant alterations in cytokine production, but Allo-BT produced the most dramatic and enduring effects as summarized: IL-2: Production of IL-2 was suppressed at day 5, (p0.0001), but then rose, peaking at day 21, 30% greater than control values (p0.05). IL-6: Allo-BT mice showed suppression of IL-6 throughout the study period (p0.005 vs controls, each time point). IL-10: A 5-fold increase in IL-10 production was seen at day 5 after Allo-BT (p0.0001 vs control). Production of IL-10 was suppressed at days 10 and 21 (p0.001), but returned to control levels by day 30, gamma-IFN: At day 5 post Allo-BT, gamma-IFN was 4 x greater than controls (p0.0001). Gamma-IFN production was suppressed at day 10, but then rose at days 21 and 30 to nearly 3 x control levels (p0.0001).Allo-BT produced multiple cytokine alterations that were of prolonged duration. These results provide a theoretic explanation for the multiple, long-term immunomodulating effects seen in patients who have received transfusions.

We describe a set of techniques for performing large scale ab initio calculations using multigrid accelerations and a real-space grid as a basis. The multigrid methods provide effective convergence acceleration and preconditioning on all length scales, thereby permitting efficient calculations for ill-conditioned systems with long length scales or high energy cutoffs. We discuss specific implementations of multigrid and real-space algorithms for electronic structure calculations, including an efficient multigrid-accelerated solver for Kohn-Sham equations, compact yet accurate discretization schemes for the Kohn-Sham and Poisson equations, optimized pseudopotentials for real-space calculations, efficacious computation of ionic forces, and a complex-wave-function implementation for arbitrary sampling of the Brillouin zone. A particular strength of a real-space multigrid approach is its ready adaptability to massively parallel computer architectures, and we present an implementation for the Cray-T3D with essentially linear scaling of the execution time with the number of processors. The method has been applied to a variety of periodic and nonperiodic systems, including disordered Si, a N impurity in diamond, AlN in the wurtzite structure, and bulk Al. The high accuracy of the atomic forces allows for large step molecular dynamics; e.g., in a 1-ps simulation of Si at 1100 K with an ionic step of 80 a.u., the total energy was conserved within 27 \ensuremath{\mu}eV per atom. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

To evaluate the effects of surface moisture and material viscosity on the shear bond strength of resin-modified glass ionomers to dentin.Sixty human teeth were mounted in phenolic rings and ground to obtain flat facial and lingual dentin surfaces. The specimens were assigned to six treatment groups. Three groups were first conditioned with 10% polyacrylic acid. On one surface of each specimen, dentin was left visibly moist prior to application of the restorative material. On the opposite surface the dentin was dried, but not desiccated, after conditioning. For these three groups, Fuji II LC resin-modified glass ionomer was mixed at powder/liquid (P/L) ratios of 1.4, 3.0 and 3.6 and applied to the conditioned dentin in 2.5 mm diameter molds. The other three groups were treated with Vitremer primer. One surface of each specimen was "dry" and one surface was "moist" before primer application. Vitremer restorative material was mixed at P/L ratios of 2.2, 2.5 and 2.8 and applied to the primed surfaces. Shear bond strengths were measured using a universal testing machine. Data were subjected to three-way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparisons test.Mean shear bond strengths of the two materials ranged from 6.9 to 10.4 MPa and varied little regardless of the viscosity of the materials or the degree of surface moistness. The differences among viscosities and surface moistness were not statistically significant. IN this in vitro study, the shear bond strengths of two resin-modified glass ionomers were unaffected by the viscosity of the materials and the surface moisture of the dentin substrate.
