Abstract

Abstract KM3NeT/ORCA is a water Cherenkov neutrino detector under construction and anchored at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. The detector is designed to study oscillations of atmospheric neutrinos and determine the neutrino mass ordering. This paper focuses on an initial configuration of ORCA, referred to as ORCA6, which comprises six out of the foreseen 115 detection units of photo-sensors. A high-purity neutrino sample was extracted, corresponding to an exposure of 433 kton-years. The sample of 5828 neutrino candidates is analysed following a binned log-likelihood method in the reconstructed energy and cosine of the zenith angle. The atmospheric oscillation parameters are measured to be sin 2 θ 23 = 0.51 − 0.05 + 0.04 $$ {\sin}^2{\theta}_{23}={0.51}_{-0.05}^{+0.04} $$ , and Δ m 31 2 = 2.18 − 0.35 + 0.25 × 10 − 3 eV 2 ∪ − 2.25 − 1.76 × 10 − 3 $$ \Delta {m}_{31}^2={2.18}_{-0.35}^{+0.25}\times {10}^{-3}{\textrm{eV}}^2\cup \left\{-2.25,-1.76\right\}\times {10}^{-3} $$ eV2 at 68% CL. The inverted neutrino mass ordering hypothesis is disfavoured with a p-value of 0.25.

Abstract

Abstract The KM3NeT/ARCA neutrino detector is currently under construction at 3500 m depth offshore Capo Passero, Sicily, in the Mediterranean Sea. The main science objectives are the detection of high-energy cosmic neutrinos and the discovery of their sources. Simulations were conducted for the full KM3NeT/ARCA detector, instrumenting a volume of 1 km $$^3$$ 3 , to estimate the sensitivity and discovery potential to point-like neutrino sources. This paper covers the reconstruction of track- and shower-like signatures, as well as the criteria employed for neutrino event selection. With an angular resolution below 0.1 $$^\circ $$ ∘ for tracks and under 2 $$^\circ $$ ∘ for showers, the sensitivity to point-like neutrino sources surpasses existing observed limits across the entire sky.

Abstract

Abstract The measurement of the flux of muons produced in cosmic ray air showers is essential for the study of primary cosmic rays. Such measurements are important in extensive air shower detectors to assess the energy spectrum and the chemical composition of the cosmic ray flux, complementary to the information provided by fluorescence detectors. Detailed simulations of the cosmic ray air showers are carried out, using codes such as CORSIKA, to estimate the muon flux at sea level. These simulations are based on the choice of hadronic interaction models, for which improvements have been implemented in the post-LHC era. In this work, a deficit in simulations that use state-of-the-art QCD models with respect to the measurement deep underwater with the KM3NeT neutrino detectors is reported. The KM3NeT/ARCA and KM3NeT/ORCA neutrino telescopes are sensitive to TeV muons originating mostly from primary cosmic rays with energies around 10 TeV. The predictions of state-of-the-art QCD models show that the deficit with respect to the data is constant in zenith angle; no dependency on the water overburden is observed. The observed deficit at a depth of several kilometres is compatible with the deficit seen in the comparison of the simulations and measurements at sea level.

Abstract

The ICARUS T600, a liquid argon time projection chamber (LAr-TPC) detector mainly devoted to neutrino physics, underwent a major overhauling at CERN in 2016–2017, which included also a new design of the read-out electronics, in view of its operation in Fermilab on the Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) beam from 2019. The new more compact electronics showed capability of handling more efficiently the signals also in the intermediate Induction-2 wire plane with a significant increase of signal to noise (S/N), allowing for charge measurement also in this view. The new front-end and the analog to digital conversion (ADC) system are presented together with the results of the tests on 50 liters liquid argon TPC performed at CERN with cosmic rays. Abstract

We describe the production of a 62 PBq (62 × 1015 Bq) source of ∼ 750 keV neutrinos coming from the electron capture decay of 51Cr. This is the first time that such a high-intensity, low-energy neutrino source has been produced. The rationale for having such a source is to check the overall procedures of the radiochemical solar neutrino experiment, GALLEX. The source was obtained by neutron activation of 36 kg of enriched chromium at the Siloe reactor at Grenoble. The enriched chromium (containing 38.6% of 50Cr compared to 4.35% for natural chromium) was produced by the Kurchatov Institute in Moscow, in the form of CrO3. It was then electrolyzed in Saclay to obtain chromium metal tubes, which were subsequently broken into coarse chips of typically 1 mm3 volume. The chromium chips were put inside 12 special zircalloy irradiation cells that were then placed around the Siloe reactor core, which had been specially reconfigured for this irradiation. The irradiation lasted for 23.8 days. Then the activated chromium was transferred in a stainless-steel container into a sealed tungsten shield having a wall thickness of 8.5 cm. The 51Cr activity at the end of the irradiation (EOB) has been measured to have a mean value of (62.5 ± 0.4) PBq, using several techniques: by neutronics and gamma scanning in the reactor shortly after EOB, with an ionization chamber, by calorimetry, and, after a considerable decay period, by gamma-ray spectroscopy and measurement of the non-radioactive 51V daughter. The source resided in the center of the GALLEX detector at the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory between June 23, 1994 and October 10, 1994, irradiating the gallium target with a neutrino intensity well above the solar neutrino background. The results of this full-scale test are in good agreement with the expected efficiency of the entire GALLEX experiment calculated as a product of the known efficiencies of the various parts of the experimental procedure.

Abstract

This paper describes the main features of the proposed low energy solar neutrino detector Borexino, planned to be installed at the Gran Sasso Laboratory. This real time detector is based on a massive, calorimetric, liquid scintillation spectroscopy technique, whose high luminosity is the base for the attempt to achieve a low signal detection threshold. After a description of the main structural components of the detector, of its performances in term of spatial and energy resolution, and of the neutrino reactions occurring in the liquid scintillator, a description of the crucial background topic is given. Finally the main implications of the physics program of the experiment are briefly illustrated.

INTRODUCTION The two experiments running from longtime' with the goal to measure the flux of neutrinos born inside the Sun have emphasized a puzzling situation : the detected flux is lower than the expected one, evaluated on the basis of the SSM, and the indication of a time-variation found by one of them, is not confirmed by the other . A decisive answer is expected from the two "Gallium" experiments 2 in the neutrino energy region . The neutrino high energy region, will be deeply investigated by the SuperKamiokande and SNO experiments, that are now in project . BOREXINO 3 is an experiment that has been conceived to perform a neutrino spectroscopy with the unique feature of a real-time sensitivity to the low energy 7 Be monochromatic solar source (E,=0.860 MeV) . Significative results are expected also in the 8 B region . The detector will provide high luminosity, low detection threshold and very " p-p" " 8 B"

12. Hospital admissions in Italy for liver and gastrointestinal diseases in the period 1999-2002: an epidemiological study.

Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study is to assess the total number of admissions and the rates of hospitalization in Italy for liver and gastrointestinal diseases in the period 1999-2002, and to indirectly highlight the peculiar epidemiological features of the diseases causing these admissions., Methods: The data bank of the Italian Ministry of Health has been consulted. The total number of admissions for liver and gastrointestinal diseases as coded by the International Classification of Diseases Manual - Ninth Edition - Clinical Modification, and their relevant admission rates in the considered period have been calculated. Age, sex, and regional rates for these admissions have also been calculated., Results: In Italy, during the years 1999-2002, a total number of 7,294,792 patients (4,034,195 males and 3,260,597 females) were admitted with liver and gastrointestinal diseases. The total number of admissions relevant to the pathologies being considered has been quite steady in the study period. The calculated mean national rate of admission for these diseases was 3.19/100 (highest rate of 3.27/100 recorded in 1999 and lowest rate of 3.14/100 recorded in 2002). The highest rates of admission for the considered diseases were recorded in the two age ranges '<1 year' and '75 years and more', during the entire periods (highest rates of admission of 12.23/100 and 6.56/100, respectively, recorded in 1999). In the age range '15-24 years', the lowest rates of admission have been calculated (lowest rate of admission of 1.66/100 recorded in 2002). The Italian regions where the highest and lowest admission rates for these pathologies have been recorded are the Umbria region in 1999 (admission rate of 4.02/100) and the Friuli Venezia Giulia region in 2002 (admission rate of 2.54/100), respectively., Conclusion: The study shows that in Italy a great percentage of hospital admissions is due to liver and gastrointestinal diseases; it might indirectly suggest that liver and gastrointestinal diseases are related to sex, age, and geographical factors. It, furthermore, indicates that the Italian hospital-assistance system is inadequate with respect to the number of hospitalizations for these diseases.
