Source imaging methodology is used to provide a three-dimensional two-pion source function for mid-rapidity pion pairs with p T 70 MeV / c in central (0–7%) Pb + Pb collisions at s NN = 17.3 GeV . Prominent non-Gaussian tails are observed in the pion pair transverse momentum (outward) and in the beam (longitudinal) directions. Model calculations reproduce them with the assumption of Bjorken longitudinal boost invariance and transverse flow blast-wave dynamics; they also yield a proper time for breakup and emission duration for the pion source.

We report the STAR measurement of ϕ meson production in Au + Au and p + p collisions at s N N = 200 GeV . Using the event mixing technique, the ϕ spectra and yields are obtained at mid-rapidity for five centrality bins in Au + Au collisions and for non-singly-diffractive p + p collisions. It is found that the ϕ transverse momentum distributions from Au + Au collisions are better fitted with a single-exponential while the p + p spectrum is better described by a double-exponential distribution. The measured nuclear modification factors indicate that ϕ production in central Au + Au collisions is suppressed relative to peripheral collisions when scaled by the number of binary collisions ( 〈 N bin 〉 ) . The systematics of 〈 p t 〉 versus centrality and the constant ϕ / K − ratio versus beam species, centrality, and collision energy rule out kaon coalescence as the dominant mechanism for ϕ production.

An overview of the strangeness measurements made by the STAR collaboration at RHIC for Au-Au collisions at √s NN = 130 and 200 GeV plus p-p collisions at √s NN = 200 GeV is presented. A wealth of information has been generated on the kinematics and scale of strange particle production by this experiment. When viewed in combination a picture emerges of particles demonstrating a surprisingly high degree of collective motion, suggestive of strong internal pressure within the source which builds up rapidly. The non-resonance yields are consistent with statistical hadron formation. Although there appears to be a rapid decoupling of the source, resonance particle measurements show signs of rescattering during the hadronic phase. Meanwhile the observed suppression of high momentum probes and their large azimuthal asymmetry indicate that this hot dense matter has significant interactions with particles moving through it.

Values of the ratios in the mid-rapidity yields of Λ / Λ =0.71±0.01( stat. )±0.04( sys. ) , Ξ + / Ξ − =0.83±0.04( stat. )±0.05( sys. ) , Ω + / Ω − =0.95±0.15( stat. )±0.05( sys. ) and K + /K − =1.092±0.023(combined) were obtained in central s NN =130 GeV Au+Au collisions using the STAR detector. The ratios indicate that a fraction of the net-baryon number from the initial system is present in the excess of hyperons over antihyperons at mid-rapidity. The trend in the progression of the baryon ratios, with increasing strange quark content, is similar to that observed in heavy-ion collisions at lower energies. The value of these ratios may be related to the charged kaon ratio in the framework of simple quark-counting and thermal models.

The STAR Level-3 trigger issues a trigger decision upon a complete online reconstruction of Au+Au collisions at relativistic heavy ion collider energies. Central interactions are processed up to a rate of 50 s −1 including a simple analysis of physics observables. The setup of the processor farm and the event reconstruction as well as experiences and the proposed trigger algorithms are described.

The STAR detector has made a variety of measurements of strange and other hadronic species in Au+Au collisions at s N N = 130 GeV. A comparison of kaon and pion production enables an examination of the systematics of strangeness production with energy by comparing them to lower energy collisions. Anti-baryon to baryon ratios indicate a much reduced net-baryon density and transverse momentum spectra show that a picture of transverse expansion seems appropriate.

Elliptic flow from nuclear collisions is a hadronic observable sensitive to the early stages of system evolution. We report first results on elliptic flow of charged particles at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at √(sNN) = 130 GeV using the STAR Time Projection Chamber at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The elliptic flow signal, v₂, averaged over transverse momentum, reaches values of about 6% for relatively peripheral collisions and decreases for the more central collisions. This can be interpreted as the observation of a higher degree of thermalization than at lower collision energies. Pseudorapidity and transverse momentum dependence of elliptic flow are also presented.

There are few breast-conserving therapies (BCT) for centrally located breast cancer. The present paper describes a BCT for breast cancers in such a location, which permits conservation of the nipple-areola complex (NAC), provided this has not been infiltrated. After histological detection of the breast cancer by punch biopsy, a central segmental mastectomy and an axillary dissection are performed. An immediate reconstruction of the subareolar defect is carried out by means of a local flap technique, thus conserving the NAC.

The STAR Time Projection Chamber was successfully operated during the first RHIC run in 2000. Most of the STAR contributions reported in these proceedings are based on the analysis of data from the TPC. In this article, we show that the performance achieved by the TPC, in terms of track reconstruction, position resolution, and particle identification are well suited for measuring precise and reliable physics observables.

Net proton and negative hadron spectra for central Pb+Pb collisions at 158thinspthinspGeV per nucleon at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron were measured and compared to spectra from lighter systems. Net baryon distributions were derived from those of net protons. Stopping (rapidity shift with respect to the beam) and mean transverse momentum {l_angle}p{sub T}{r_angle} of net baryons increase with system size. The rapidity density of negative hadrons scales with the number of participant nucleons for nuclear collisions, whereas their {l_angle}p{sub T}{r_angle} is independent of system size. The {l_angle}p{sub T}{r_angle} dependence upon particle mass and system size is consistent with larger transverse flow velocity at midrapidity for Pb+Pb compared to S+S central collisions. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society}

We report measurements of Xi and Xi-bar hyperon absolute yields as a function of rapidity in 158 GeV/c Pb+Pb collisions. At midrapidity, dN/dy = 2.29 +/- 0.12 for Xi, and 0.52 +/- 0.05 for Xi-bar, leading to the ratio of Xi-bar/Xi = 0.23 +/- 0.03. Inverse slope parameters fitted to the measured transverse mass spectra are of the order of 300 MeV near mid-rapidity. The estimated total yield of Xi particles in Pb+Pb central interactions amounts to 7.4 +/- 1.0 per collision. Comparison to Xi production in properly scaled p+p reactions at the same energy reveals a dramatic enhancement (about one order of magnitude) of Xi production in Pb+Pb central collisions over elementary hadron interactions.

Data on φ -production obtained by the CERN NA49 experiment for central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV/u are presented. Compared with pp interactions the φ -yield shows substantial strangeness enhancement: the φ /π ratio is found to increase by a factor of 2.6 ± 0.6, which is approximately the square of the K/π enhancement.

The composition of forward-going projectile spectator matter in fixed-target Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A · GeV at the CERN SPS has been studied as a function of centrality. The data were measured with the NA49 veto calorimeter. We observe that forward-going spectator matter in central collisions consists of 9 neutrons, 7 protons, and half a deuteron on average. At large impact parameters most spectator nucleons are bound in fragments. The relative resolution of the average impact parameter derived from the measurement of spectator neutrons is roughly 19% in the range from zero to half maximum impact parameters.

The directed and elliptic flow of protons and charged pions has been observed from the semi-central collisions of a 158 GeV/nucleon Pb beam with a Pb target. The rapidity and transverse momentum dependence of the flow has been measured. The directed flow of the pions is opposite to that of the protons at high rapidity but both exhibit negative flow at low p t . The elliptic flow of both is fairly independent of rapidity but rises with p t .

Preliminary inclusive spectra of negative hadrons, net protons and neutral strange particles are presented, measured by the NA49 experiment in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon. Comparison of their yields with those from the lighter S+S system suggests that the yields scale approximately with the number of participating nucleons.

We discuss preliminary data on stopping for central Pb + Pb collisions at 158 GeV/nucleon. The (net) proton rapidity density measured by the NA49 Time Projection Chambers, NA49 Time of Flight and the NA44 spectrometer is presented. Slightly higher stopping is observed relative to S + S at 200 GeV/nucleon. The rapidity density exhibits a plateau around mid-rapidity which is qualitatively different from results at the AGS and BEVALAC/SIS energies. The second part of the paper discusses the azimuthal correlation of the energy flow. Preliminary results reveal that the ‘fireball’ preserves the information of the collision geometry even at SPS energies.

We present measurements of the energy dependence of event-by-event fluctuations in the K/{pi} and (p+p)/{pi} multiplicity ratios in heavy-ion collisions at the CERN SPS. The particle ratio fluctuations were obtained for central Pb+Pb collisions at five collision energies, {radical}(s{sub NN}), between 6.3 and 17.3 GeV. After accounting for the effects of finite-number statistics and detector resolution, we extract the strength of nonstatistical fluctuations at each energy. For the K/{pi} ratio, larger fluctuations than expected for independent particle production are found at all collision energies. The fluctuations in the (p+p)/{pi} ratio are smaller than expectations from independent particle production, indicating correlated pion and proton production from resonance decays. For both ratios, the deviation from purely statistical fluctuations shows an increase toward lower collision energies. The results are compared to transport model calculations, which fail to describe the energy dependence of the K/{pi} ratio fluctuations.

{phi} meson production is studied by the NA49 Collaboration in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A,30A,40A,80A, and 158A GeV beam energy. The data are compared with measurements at lower and higher energies and with microscopic and thermal models. The energy dependence of yields and spectral distributions is compatible with the assumption that partonic degrees of freedom set in at low SPS energies.

Results on {lambda},{lambda},{xi}{sup -}, and {xi}{sup +} production in central Pb+Pb reactions at 20A,30A,40A,80A, and 158A GeV are presented. The energy dependence of transverse mass spectra, rapidity spectra, and multiplicities is discussed. Comparisons to string hadronic models (UrQMD and HSD) and statistical hadron gas models are shown. Although the latter provide a reasonable description of all particle yields, the first class of models fails to match the {xi}{sup -} and {xi}{sup +} multiplicities.

Multiplicity fluctuations of positively, negatively, and all charged hadrons in the forward hemisphere were studied in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV. The multiplicity distributions and their scaled variances ω are presented as functions of their dependence on collision energy as well as on rapidity and transverse momentum. The distributions have bell-like shapes and their scaled variances are in the range from 0.8 to 1.2 without any significant structure in their energy dependence. No indication of the critical point in fluctuations are observed. The string-hadronic ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics (UrQMD) model significantly overpredicts the mean, but it approximately reproduces the scaled variance of the multiplicity distributions. The predictions of the statistical hadron-resonance gas model obtained within the grand-canonical and canonical ensembles disagree with the measured scaled variances. The narrower than Poissonian multiplicity fluctuations measured in numerous cases may be explained by the impact of conservation laws on fluctuations in relativistic systems.

Measurements of Bose-Einstein correlations of {pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup -} pairs in central Pb+Pb collisions were performed with the NA49 detector at the CERN Super Proton Synchroton for beam energies of 20A,30A,40A,80A, and 158A GeV. Correlation functions were measured in the longitudinally comoving 'out-side-long' reference frame as a function of rapidity and transverse momentum in the forward hemisphere of the reaction. Radius and correlation strength parameters were obtained from fits of a Gaussian parametrization. The results show a decrease of the radius parameters with increasing transverse-momentum characteristic of strong radial flow in the pion source. No striking dependence on pion-pair rapidity or beam energy is observed. Static and dynamic properties of the pion source are obtained from simultaneous fits with a blast-wave model to radius parameters and midrapidity transverse-momentum spectra. Predictions of hydrodynamic and microscopic models of Pb+Pb collisions are discussed.

Transverse momentum spectra up to 4.5 GeV/c around midrapidity of {pi}{sup {+-}},p,p, and K{sup {+-}} in Pb+Pb reactions were measured at {radical}(s{sub NN})=17.3 GeV by the CERN-NA49 experiment. The nuclear modification factors R{sub AA} for {pi}{sup {+-}} and R{sub CP} for {pi}{sup {+-}},p,p,K{sup {+-}} were extracted and compared with results obtained at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at {radical}(s{sub NN})=200 GeV. The modification factor R{sub AA} shows a rapid increase with transverse momentum in the covered region. This indicates that the Cronin effect is the dominating effect in our energy range. The modification factor R{sub CP}, in which the contribution of the Cronin effect is reduced, shows a saturation well below unity in the {pi}{sup {+-}} channel. The extracted R{sub CP} values follow the 200 GeV RHIC results closely in the available transverse momentum range, except for {pi}{sup {+-}} above 2.5 GeV/c transverse momentum. There the measured suppression is smaller than that observed at RHIC.

Results on charged pion and kaon production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A and 30A GeV are presented and compared to data at lower and higher energies. Around 30A GeV a rapid change of the energy dependence for the yields of pions and kaons as well as for the shape of the transverse mass spectra is observed. The change is compatible with the prediction that the threshold for production of a state of deconfined matter at the early stage of the collisions is located at low CERN Super Proton Synchroton energies.

Results from electric charge correlations studied with the Balance Function (BF) method in A+A collisions from 20A to 158A GeV are presented in two different rapidity intervals: In the midrapidity region we observe a decrease of the width of the BF distribution with increasing centrality of the collision, whereas this effect vanishes in the forward rapidity region. Results from the energy dependence study in central Pb+Pb collisions show that the narrowing of the BF expressed by the normalized width parameter W increases with energy toward the highest CERN Super Proton Synchrotron and BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider energies. Finally we compare our experimental data points with the predictions of several models. The hadronic string models Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics and Heavy Ion Jet INteraction Generator (HIJING) do not reproduce the observed narrowing of the BF. However, A MultiPhase Transport medel (AMPT), which contains a quark-parton transport phase before hadronization, can reproduce the narrowing of the BF's width with centrality. This confirms the proposed sensitivity of the BF analysis to the time of hadronization.

The production of charged pions in minimum bias p+C interactions is studied using a sample of 377000 inelastic events obtained with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS at 158 GeV/c beam momentum. The data cover a phase space area ranging from 0 to 1.8 GeV/c in transverse momentum and from -0.1 to 0.5 in Feynman x. Inclusive invariant cross sections are given on a grid of 270 bins per charge thus offering for the first time a dense coverage of the projectile hemisphere and of the cross-over region into the target fragmentation zone., Comment: 31 pages, 30 figures, submitted to European Journal of Physics

The transverse mass m{sub t} distributions for antiprotons are measured at midrapidity for minimum bias Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV and for central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, and 80A GeV beam energies in the fixed target experiment NA49 at the CERN SPS. The rapidity density dn/dy, inverse slope parameter T, and mean transverse mass derived from the m{sub t} distributions are studied as a function of the incident energy and the collision centrality and compared to the relevant data on proton production. The shapes of the m{sub t} distributions of p and p are very similar. The ratios of the particle yields, p/p and {lambda}/p, are also analyzed. The p/p ratio exhibits an increase with decreasing centrality and a steep rise with increasing beam energy. The {lambda}/p ratio increases beyond unity with decreasing beam energy.

The elliptic flow of Lambda hyperons has been measured by the NA49 collaboration at the CERN-SPS in semi-central Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV. The standard method of correlating particles with the event plane was used. Measurements of v2 near mid-rapidity are reported as a function of rapidity, centrality and transverse momentum. Elliptic flow of Lambda particles increases both with the impact parameter and with the transverse momentum. It is compared with v2 for pions and protons as well as with model calculations. The observation of significant elliptic flow and its mass dependence suggest strong collective behaviour of the matter produced in collisions of heavy nuclei already at the SPS. Scaling properties of elliptic flow of different particle species have been tested at 158A GeV. The limited pT range of the data does not allow for a decisive test of the coalescence model., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Physical Review C

The centrality and system size dependence of multiplicity fluctuations of charged particles produced in nuclear collisions at $158 A$ GeV was studied by the NA49 collaboration. Centrality selected Pb+Pb collisions, semi-central C+C and Si+Si collisions as well as inelastic p+p interactions were analyzed. Charged hadrons in 0.15 4 GeV/c are reconstructed in pp and Au+Au collisions at {radical}(s{sub NN})=200 GeV. The associated multiplicity and p{sub perpendicular} magnitude sum are found to increase from pp to central Au+Au collisions. The associated p{sub perpendicular} distributions, while similar in shape on the nearside, are significantly softened on the awayside in central Au+Au relative to pp and not much harder than that of inclusive hadrons. The results, consistent with jet quenching, suggest that the awayside fragments approach equilibration with the medium traversed.

We present the first large-acceptance measurement of event-wise mean transverse momentum fluctuations for Au-Au collisions at nucleon-nucleon center-of-momentum collision energy root s(NN) = 130 GeV. The observed nonstatistical fluctuations substantially exceed in magnitude fluctuations expected from the finite number of particles produced in a typical collision. The r.m.s. fractional width excess of the event-wise distribution is 13.7 +/- 0.1(stat) +/- 1.3(syst)% relative to a statistical reference, for the 15% most-central collisions and for charged hadrons within pseudorapidity range vertical bar eta vertical bar fluctuation excess is qualitatively larger than those observed at lower energies and differs markedly from theoretical expectations. Contributions to fluctuations from semihard parton scattering in the initial state and dissipation in the bulk colored medium are discussed.

Results are presented on {omega} production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 40 and 158A GeV beam energy. For the first time in heavy ion reactions, rapidity distributions and total yields were measured for the sum {omega}{sup -}+{omega}{sup +} at 40A GeV and for {omega}{sup -} and {omega}{sup +} separately at 158A GeV. The yields are strongly underpredicted by the string-hadronic UrQMD model but agree better with predictions from hadron gas models.

The hadronic final state of central Pb+Pb collisions at 20, 30, 40, 80, and 158 AGeV has been measured by the CERN NA49 collaboration. The mean transverse mass of pions and kaons at midrapidity stays nearly constant in this energy range, whereas at lower energies, at the AGS, a steep increase with beam energy was measured. Compared to p+p collisions as well as to model calculations, anomalies in the energy dependence of pion and kaon production at lower SPS energies are observed. These findings can be explained, assuming that the energy density reached in central A+A collisions at lower SPS energies is sufficient to force the hot and dense nuclear matter into a deconfined phase.

Electric charge correlations were studied for p+p, C+C, Si+Si, and centrality selected Pb+Pb collisions at {radical}(s{sub NN})=17.2 GeV with the NA49 large acceptance detector at the CERN SPS. In particular, long-range pseudorapidity correlations of oppositely charged particles were measured using the balance function method. The width of the balance function decreases with increasing system size and centrality of the reactions. This decrease could be related to an increasing delay of hadronization in central Pb+Pb collisions.

Emission of pi+/-, K+/-, phi, and Lambda was measured in near-central C+C and Si+Si collisions at 158 AGeV beam energy. Together with earlier data for p+p, S+S, and Pb+Pb, the system-size dependence of relative strangeness production in nucleus-nucleus collisions is obtained. Its fast rise and the saturation observed at about 60 participating nucleons can be understood as the onset of the formation of coherent systems of increasing size.

Results are presented on event-by-event electric charge fluctuations in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A,30A,40A,80A, and 158A GeV. The observed fluctuations are close to those expected for a gas of pions correlated by global charge conservation only. These fluctuations are considerably larger than those calculated for an ideal gas of deconfined quarks and gluons. The present measurements do not necessarily exclude reduced fluctuations from a quark-gluon plasma because these might be masked by contributions from resonance decays.

We report inclusive photon measurements about midrapidity (\y\ gammagamma decay channel. The fractional contribution of the pi(0)-->gammagamma decay to the inclusive photon spectrum decreases by 20%+/-5% between p(t)=1.65 GeV/c and p(t)=2.4 GeV/c in the most central events, indicating that relative to pi(0)-->gammagamma decay the contribution of other photon sources is substantially increasing.

We report on the rapidity and centrality dependence of proton and anti-proton transverse mass distributions from {sup 197}Au + {sup 197}Au collisions at {radical}s{sub NN} = 130 GeV as measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC. Our results are from the rapidity and transverse momentum range of |y| < 0.5 and 0.35 < p{sub t} < 1.00 GeV/c. For both protons and anti-protons, transverse mass distributions become more convex from peripheral to central collisions demonstrating characteristics of collective expansion. The measured rapidity distributions and the mean transverse momenta versus rapidity are flat within |y| < 0.5. Comparisons of our data with results from model calculations indicate that in order to obtain a consistent picture of the proton(anti-proton) yields and transverse mass distributions the possibility of pre-hadronic collective expansion may have to be taken into account.

System size dependence of multiplicity fluctuations of charged particles produced in nuclear collisions at 158 A GeV was studied in the NA49 CERN experiment. Results indicate a non-monotonic dependence of the scaled variance of the multiplicity distribution with a maximum for semi-peripheral Pb+Pb interactions with number of projectile participants of about 35. This effect is not observed in a string-hadronic model of nuclear collision HIJING., Comment: Presented at "Focus on Multiplicity", 17-19 of June, Bari, Italy

- Abstract
Results are presented on Omega production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 40 and 158A GeV beam energy. For the first time in heavy ion reactions, rapidity distributions and total yields were measured for the sum Omega(-) + Omega(+) at 40A GeV and for Omega(-) and Omega(+) separately at 158A GeV. The yields are strongly underpredicted by the string-hadronic UrQMD model but agree better with predictions from hadron gas models.

Production of Lambda and Antilambda hyperons was measured in central Pb-Pb collisions at 40, 80, and 158A GeV beam energy on a fixed target. Transverse mass spectra and rapidity distributions are given for all three energies. The Lambda/pi ratio at midrapidity and in full phase space shows a pronounced maximum between the highest BNL Alternating Gradient Synchrotron and 40A GeV CERN Super Proton Synchrotron energies, whereas the Lambda/pi ratio exhibits a monotonic increase.

We present the results of a systematic study of the shape of the pion distribution in coordinate space at freeze-out in Au+Au collisions at RHIC using two-pion Hanbury Brown-Twiss (HBT) interferometry. Oscillations of the extracted HBT radii vs. emission angle indicate sources elongated perpendicular to the reaction plane. The results indicate that the pressure and expansion time of the collision system are not sufficient to completely quench its initial shape.

The transverse mass spectra and midrapidity yields for Xis and Omegas are presented. For the 10% most central collisions, the (Xi) over bar (+)/h(-) ratio increases from the Super Proton Synchrotron to the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider energies while the Xi(-)/h(-) stays approximately constant. A hydrodynamically inspired model fit to the Xi spectra, which assumes a thermalized source, seems to indicate that these multistrange particles experience a significant transverse flow effect, but are emitted when the system is hotter and the flow is smaller than values obtained from a combined fit to pi, K, p, and Lambdas.

We report results on rho(770)(0)-->pi(+)pi(-) production at midrapidity in p+p and peripheral Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. This is the first direct measurement of rho(770)(0)-->pi(+)pi(-) in heavy-ion collisions. The measured rho(0) peak in the invariant mass distribution is shifted by approximately 40 MeV/c(2) in minimum bias p+p interactions and approximately 70 MeV/c(2) in peripheral Au+Au collisions. The rho(0) mass shift is dependent on transverse momentum and multiplicity. The modification of the rho(0) meson mass, width, and shape due to phase space and dynamical effects are discussed.
