Search

The new data sources give the possibility to answer analytically the questions that arise from mobility manager. The process of transforming raw data into knowledge is very complex, and it is necessary to provide metaphors of visualizations that are understandable to decision makers. Here, we propose an analytical platform that extracts information on the mobility of individuals from mobile phone by applying Data Mining methodologies. The main results highlighted here are both technical and methodological. First, communicating information through visual analytics techniques facilitates understanding of information to those who have no specific technical or domain knowledge. Secondly, the API system guarantees the ability to export aggregates according to the granularity required, enabling other actors to produce new services based on the extracted models. For the future, we expect to extend the platform by inserting other layers. For example, a layer for measuring the sustainability index of a territory, such as the ability of public transport to attract private mobility or the index that measures how many private vehicle trips can be converted into electrical mobility.

We use Herschel-PACS far-infrared data, combined with previous multi-band information and mid-IR spectra, to properly account for the presence of an active nucleus and constrain its energetic contribution in luminous infrared (IR) sources at z\sim2. The sample is composed of 24 sources in the GOODS-South field, with typical IR luminosity of 10^{12} Lo. Data from the 4 Ms Chandra X-ray imaging in this field are also used to identify and characterize AGN emission. We reproduce the observed spectral energy distribution (SED), decomposed into a host-galaxy and an AGN component. A smooth-torus model for circum-nuclear dust is used to account for the direct and re-processed contribution from the AGN. We confirm that galaxies with typical L_{8-1000um}\sim10^{12}Lo at z\sim2 are powered predominantly by star-formation. An AGN component is present in nine objects (\sim35% of the sample) at the 3sigma confidence level, but its contribution to the 8-1000 um emission accounts for only \sim5% of the energy budget. The AGN contribution rises to \sim23% over the 5-30 um range (in agreement with Spitzer IRS results) and to \sim60% over the narrow 2-6 um range. The presence of an AGN is confirmed by X-ray data for 3 (out of nine) sources, with X-ray spectral analysis indicating the presence of significant absorption, i.e. NH\sim10^{23}-10^{24} cm^{-2}. An additional source shows indications of obscured AGN emission from X-ray data. The comparison between the mid-IR--derived X-ray luminosities and those obtained from X-ray data suggests that obscuration is likely present also in the remaining six sources that harbour an AGN according to the SED-fitting analysis.

We present ultra-deep mid-IR spectra of 48 infrared-luminous galaxies in the GOODS-South field obtained with the InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. These galaxies are selected among faint infrared sources (0.14 - 0.5 mJy at 24 um) in two redshift bins (0.76-1.05 and 1.75-2.4) to sample the major contributors to the cosmic infrared background at the most active epochs. We estimate redshifts for 92% of the sample using PAH and Si absorption features. Only few of these galaxies (5% at z~1 and 12% at z~2) have their total infrared luminosity dominated by emission from AGN. The averaged mid-IR spectra of the z~1 LIRGs and of the z~2 ULIRGs are very similar to the averaged spectrum of local starbursts and HII-like ULIRGs, respectively. We find that 6.2um PAH equivalent widths reach a plateau of ~1 um for L(24 mu) < 1E11 L(sun). At higher luminosities, EW (6.2 mu) anti-correlates with L(24 um). Intriguingly, high-z ULIRGs and SMG lie above the local EW (6.2 um) - L(24 um) relationship suggesting that, at a given luminosity, high-z ULIRGs have AGN contributions to their dust emission lower than those of local counterparts. A quantitative analysis of their morphology shows that most of the luminous IR galaxies have morphologies similar to those of IR-quiet galaxies at the same redshift. All z~2 ULIRGs of our sample are IR-excess BzK galaxies and most of them have L(FIR)/L(1600A) ratios higher than those of starburst galaxies at a given UV slope. The ``IR excess'' (Daddi et al. 2007) is mostly due to strong 7.7 um PAH emission and under-estimation of UV dust extinction. On the basis of the AGN-powered L (6 um) continuum measured directly from the mid-IR spectra, we estimate an average intrinsic X-ray AGN luminosity of L(2-10 keV) = (0.1 +/- 0.6) 1E43 erg/s, a value substantially lower than the prediction by Daddi et al. (2007).

We present Spitzer 70 and 160 micron observations of the COSMOS Spitzer survey (S-COSMOS). The data processing techniques are discussed for the publicly released products consisting of images and source catalogs. We present accurate 70 and 160 micron source counts of the COSMOS field and find reasonable agreement with measurements in other fields and with model predictions. The previously reported counts for GOODS-North and the extragalactic First Look Survey are updated with the latest calibration, and counts are measured based on the large area SWIRE survey to constrain the bright source counts. We measure an extragalactic confusion noise level of sigma_c = 9.4+/-3.3 mJy (q=5) for the MIPS 160-micron band based on the deep S-COSMOS data and report an updated confusion noise level of sigma_c = 0.35+/-0.15 mJy (q=5) for the MIPS 70-micron band., Comment: Accepted AJ, 15 Aug. 2009. Using data from four deep fields (COSMOS, AEGIS, ECDFS, and CDFN), we study the correlation between the position of galaxies in the star formation rate (SFR) versus stellar mass plane and local environment at $z10^{10.4-10.6}$ $M_{\odot}$), across all environments. We describe the absolute calibration of the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) 160 micron channel. After the on-orbit discovery of a near-IR ghost image that dominates the signal for sources hotter than about 2000 K, we adopted a strategy utilizing asteroids to transfer the absolute calibrations of the MIPS 24 and 70 micron channels to the 160 micron channel. Near-simultaneous observations at all three wavelengths are taken, and photometry at the two shorter wavelengths is fit using the Standard Thermal Model. The 160 micron flux density is predicted from those fits and compared with the observed 160 micron signal to derive the conversion from instrumental units to surface brightness. The calibration factor we derive is 41.7 MJy/sr/MIPS160 (MIPS160 being the instrumental units). The scatter in the individual measurements of the calibration factor, as well as an assesment of the external uncertainties inherent in the calibration, lead us to adopt an uncertainty of 5.0 MJy/sr/MIPS160 (12%) for the absolute uncertainty on the 160 micron flux density of a particular source as determined from a single measurement. For sources brighter than about 2 Jy, non-linearity in the response of the 160 micron detectors produces an under-estimate of the flux density: for objects as bright as 4 Jy, measured flux densities are likely to be ~20% too low. In the local Universe, galaxy properties show a strong dependence on environment. In cluster cores, early type galaxies dominate, whereas star-forming galaxies are more and more common in the outskirts. At higher redshifts and in somewhat less dense environments (e.g. galaxy groups), the situation is less clear. One open issue is that of whether and how the star formation rate (SFR) of galaxies in groups depends on the distance from the centre of mass. To shed light on this topic, we have built a sample of X-ray selected galaxy groups at 010^10.3 M_sun in order to have a high spectroscopic completeness. As we use only spectroscopic redshifts, our results are not affected by uncertainties due to projection effects. We use several SFR indicators to link the star formation (SF) activity to the galaxy environment. Taking advantage of the extremely deep mid-infrared Spitzer MIPS and far-infrared Herschel PACS observations, we have an accurate, broad-band measure of the SFR for the bulk of the star-forming galaxies. We use multi-wavelength SED fitting techniques to estimate the stellar masses of all objects and the SFR of the MIPS and PACS undetected galaxies. We analyse the dependence of the SF activity, stellar mass and specific SFR on the group-centric distance, up to z~1.6, for the first time. We do not find any correlation between the mean SFR and group-centric distance at any redshift. We do not observe any strong mass segregation either, in agreement with predictions from simulations. Our results suggest that either groups have a much smaller spread in accretion times with respect to the clusters and that the relaxation time is longer than the group crossing time., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the initial results from a Spitzer GO-1 program to obtain low resolution, mid-infrared spectra of infrared luminous galaxies at z~1-2. This paper presents the spectra of eight sources observed with the Spitzer InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS). Of the eight spectra, six have mid-IR spectral features, either emission from Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) or silicate absorption. Based on these mid-IR features, the inferred six redshifts are in the range of 1.8-2.6. The remaining two spectra detect only strong continua, thus do not yield redshift information. Strong, multiple PAH emission features are detected in two sources, and weak PAH emission in another two. These data provide direct evidence that PAH molecules are present and directly observable in ULIRGs at z~2. The six sources with measured redshifts are dusty, infrared luminous galaxies at z~2 with estimated $L_{bol} \sim 10^{13}L_\odot$. Of the eight sources, two appear starburst dominated; two with only power law continua are probably type I QSOs; and the remaining four are likely composite systems containing a buried AGN and a starburst component. Since half of our sample are optically faint sources with R>25.5mag (Vega), our results demonstrate the potential of using mid-infrared spectroscopy, especially the Aromatic and silicate features produced by dust grains to directly probe optically faint and infrared luminous populations at high redshift.

We present the Final Analysis of the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) 15 $\mu$m observations, carried out with the ISOCAM instrument on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). The data reduction method, known as LARI method, is based on a mathematical model of the detector's behaviour and was specifically designed for the detection of faint sources in ISO-CAM/PHOT data. The method is fully interactive and leads to very reliable and complete source lists. The resulting catalogue includes 1923 sources detected with $S/N > 5$ in the {0.5 -- 100 mJy} flux range and over an area of 10.85 {deg$^2$} split into four fields, making it the largest non-serendipitous extragalactic source catalogue obtained to date from ISO data. This paper presents the concepts underlying the data reduction method together with its latest enhancements. The data reduction process, the production and basic properties of the resulting catalogue are discussed. The catalogue quality is assessed by means of detailed simulations, optical identifications and comparison with previous analyses., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS. We present the optical identifications of a 95 micron ISOPHOT sample in the Lockman Hole over an area of about half square degree. The catalogue (Rodighiero et al. 2003) includes 36 sources, making up a complete flux-limited sample for fluxes > 100 mJy. Reliable sources were detected, with decreasing but well-controlled completeness, down to 20 mJy. We have combined mid-IR and radio catalogues in this area to identify the potential optical counterparts of the far-IR sources. We found 14 radio and 13 15 micron associations, 10 of which have both associations. For the 11 sources with spectroscopic redshift, we have performed a spectrophotometric analysis of the observed Spectral Energy Distributions. We present a study of the star formation rate (SFR) for a sample of 16 distant galaxies detected by ISOCAM at 15um in the CFRS0300+00 and CFRS1400+52 fields. Their high quality and intermediate resolution VLT/FORS spectra have allowed a proper correction of the Balmer emission lines from the underlying absorption. Extinction estimates using the Hbeta/Hgamma and the Halpha/Hbeta Balmer decrement are in excellent agreement, providing a robust measurement of the instantaneous SFR based on the extinction-corrected Halpha luminosity. Star formation has also been estimated exploiting the correlations between IR luminosity and those at MIR and radio wavelengths. Our study shows that the relationship between the two SFR estimates follow two distinct regimes: (1) for galaxies with SFRIR below ~ 100Msolar/yr, the SFR deduced from Halpha measurements is a good approximation of the global SFR and (2) for galaxies near of ULIRGs regime, corrected Halpha SFR understimated the SFR by a factor of 1.5 to 2. Our analyses suggest that heavily extincted regions completely hidden in optical bands (such as those found in Arp 220) contribute to less than 20% of the global budget of star formation history up to z=1., Comment: (1) GEPI, Obs. There is now a large consensus that the current epoch of the Cosmic Star Formation History (CSFH) is dominated by low mass galaxies while the most active phase at 1~1, the most IR-luminous galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs) are preferentially located in groups, and this is consistent with a reversal of the star-formation rate vs .density anti-correlation observed in the nearby Universe. At these redshifts, group galaxies contribute 60-80% of the CSFH, i.e. much more than at lower redshifts. Below z~1, the comoving number and SFR densities of IR-emitting galaxies in groups decline significantly faster than those of all IR-emitting galaxies. International audience; We provide constraints on the AGN contribution to the mid-IR extragalactic background light from a correlation analysis of deep X-ray and mid-IR observations in two regions centred on the Lockman Hole and Hubble Deep Field North (HDF-N). The Lockman region, of more than 200 square arcminutes, was observed by ISOCAM and XMM-Newton to a depth of 0.3 mJy at 15 mu m (resolving more than 30% of the mid-IR background). In the same area XMM-Newton reached flux limits of 1.4 x 10-15 erg cm-2 s-1 in the 2-10 keV energy band and 2.4 x 10-15 erg cm-2 s-1 in the 5-10 keV energy band, resolving about 80% of the 2-10 keV and 60% of the 5-10 keV backgrounds (the deepest observation in this hard band to date). Among the 76 galaxies detected by XMM-Newton, 24 show mid-IR emission, but the relative percentage of X-ray sources with mid-IR counterparts increases with the band energy: from 30% of the 0.5-2 keV sources up to 63% of the 5-10 keV sources. In contrast, only a small fraction of the mid-IR sources (around 10%) show X-ray emission within the sensitivity limits of XMM-Newton observations. The region centred on the HDF-N has been observed by ISOCAM (24 square arcminutes) to a depth of 0.05 mJy (more than 60% of the mid-IR background is resolved at this limit) and covered with a 1 Msec exposure by Chandra. In this case, 25% of the mid-IR sources are detected in the X-ray, while 30-40% of the X-ray sources show mid-IR emission. Under the assumption that all XMM sources except stars or galaxy clusters are AGN-dominated, AGNs contribute (15 /-5)% of the total mid-IR flux in the Lockman Hole. For the HDF-N we have assumed that AGN-dominated sources are luminous X-ray sources and sources with SEDs from radio to X-ray wavelengths typical of local AGNs, in which case we find that (18 /-7)% of the mid-IR flux are due to AGN emission. If we put together all the existing information from the deepest HDF-N data to the bright large-area sample in the ELAIS S1 region observed with BeppoSAX (for a total of 50 X-ray-mid-IR matched sources) using the median mid-IR to X-ray spectral indices as a function of the X-ray flux, we find an AGN contribution to the 15 mu m background of (17 /- 2)%. Since the IR spectra of typical AGNs peak around 20 mu m while starburst spectra peak at significantly longer infrared wavelengths, this figure may be considered as an upper limit to the AGN contribution to the CIRB energy density. We conclude that the population of IR luminous galaxies detected in the ISOCAM deep surveys, and the CIRB sources themselves, are mainly constituted by dust-obscured starbursts. We study the evolution of the total star formation (SF) activity, total stellar mass and halo occupation distribution in massive halos by using one of the largest X-ray selected sample of galaxy groups with secure spectroscopic identification in the major blank field surveys (ECDFS, CDFN, COSMOS, AEGIS). We provide an accurate measurement of SFR for the bulk of the star-forming galaxies using very deep mid-infrared Spitzer MIPS and far-infrared Herschel PACS observations. For undetected IR sources, we provide a well-calibrated SFR from SED fitting. We observe a clear evolution in the level of SF activity in galaxy groups. We present an objective and automated procedure for detecting clusters of galaxies in imaging galaxy surveys. Our Voronoi Galaxy Cluster Finder (VGCF) uses galaxy positions and magnitudes to find clusters and determine their main features: size, richness and contrast above the background. The VGCF uses the Voronoi tessellation to evaluate the local density and to identify clusters as significative density fluctuations above the background. The significance threshold needs to be set by the user, but experimenting with different choices is very easy since it does not require a whole new run of the algorithm. The VGCF is non-parametric and does not smooth the data. As a consequence, clusters are identified irrispective of their shape and their identification is only slightly affected by border effects and by holes in the galaxy distribution on the sky. Sir, In a recent mortality follow-up study of lead smelters in southwestern Sardinia, Italy, whose glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) phenotype was part of the pre-employment screening program, workers expressing the G6PD deficient (G6PD−) phenotype showed a substantial reduction in cardiovascular mortality.1 The same result was previously reported in a follow-up study of G6PD− subjects who voluntarily participated in a population screening,2 as well as in a US cross-sectional study of hospitalized patients.3 Interpretation of those earlier findings was limited by possible selection bias,2 and the cross-sectional study design.3 For further inquiry on the deficit of cardiovascular deaths among G6PD− subjects, we combined the lead exposed and lead unexposed employees of the same smelting plant, and re-analyzed the data changing the focus from lead susceptibility to cardiovascular mortality by the G6PD phenotype. The study population consisted of 1226 male subjects, including 993 subjects expressing the wild-type G6PD (wtG6PD) phenotype and 233 expressing the mutant G6PD− phenotype. Analysis of the geographical variation of risk for a disease is a key issue in descriptive epidemiology and may provide useful suggestions for planning further studies to identify the underlying causes. We adopted a Bayesian approach to investigate the geographical distribution of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) incidence rate across Sardinia. Data on incidence of IDDM in children aged under 15 years (619 IDDM cases) in Sardinia was obtained by the Sardinian Eurodiab ACE register. The overall completeness of ascertainment was: 91.3 %. The average yearly standardized incidence rate for the years 1989–1994 was 33.24 per 100 000 (95 % C. I. 30.60, 35.88), which is the second highest in Europe after Finland. Sex and age-specific risks were higher in males than in females. Considering the variation of IDDM risk according to the age at diagnosis, the risk profile increased up to the 13th year of age for both sexes, being steeper in males. The degree of geographical variation in IDDM risk was small with a slight difference between the highest and the lowest standardized rate across the map. Indeed, even the municipalities at lowest risk in Sardinia showed a risk higher than most European countries. The Sardinian population is genetically atypical, characterized by genetic homogeneity and marked susceptibility to autoimmune diseases. Our finding of a small geographical variation within the island coupled with a marked temporal trend previously observed in data on military conscripts could be interpreted as evidence of a relatively recent environmental aetiological factor that was uniformly distributed across the island and had its effect in a genetically predisposed population. We investigate the evolution of the star formation rate (SFR)-density relation in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS) and the Great Observatories Origin Deep Survey (GOODS) fields up to z~1.6. In addition to the "traditional method", in which the environment is defined according to a statistical measurement of the local galaxy density, we use a "dynamical" approach, where galaxies are classified according to three different environment regimes: group, "filament-like", and field. Both methods show no evidence of a SFR-density reversal. Moreover, group galaxies show a mean SFR lower than other environments up to z~1, while at earlier epochs group and field galaxies exhibit consistent levels of star formation (SF) activity. We find that processes related to a massive dark matter halo must be dominant in the suppression of the SF below z~1, with respect to purely density-related processes. We confirm this finding by studying the distribution of galaxies in different environments with respect to the so-called Main Sequence (MS) of star-forming galaxies. Galaxies in both group and "filament-like" environments preferentially lie below the MS up to z~1, with group galaxies exhibiting lower levels of star-forming activity at a given mass. At z>1, the star-forming galaxies in groups reside on the MS. Groups exhibit the highest fraction of quiescent galaxies up to z~1, after which group, "filament-like", and field environments have a similar mix of galaxy types. We conclude that groups are the most efficient locus for star-formation quenching. The Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect is a spectral distortion of the cosmic microwave background as observed through the hot plasma in galaxy clusters. This distortion is a decrement in the CMB intensity for lambda > 1.3 mm, an increment at shorter wavelengths, and small again by lambda ~250 um. As part of the Herschel Lensing Survey (HLS) we have mapped 1E0657-56 (the Bullet cluster) with SPIRE with bands centered at 250, 350 and 500 um and have detected the SZ effect at the two longest wavelengths. The measured SZ effect increment central intensities are Delta I_{0} = 0.097 +- 0.019 MJy sr^{-1} at 350 um and Delta I_{0} = 0.268 +- 0.031 MJy sr^{-1} at 500 um, consistent with the SZ effect spectrum derived from previous measurements at 2 mm. No other diffuse emission is detected. The presence of the finite temperature SZ effect correction is preferred by the SPIRE data at a significance of 2.1 sigma, opening the possibility that the relativistic SZ effect correction can be constrained by SPIRE in a sample of clusters. The Herschel Lensing Survey (HLS) will conduct deep PACS and SPIRE imaging of ~40 massive clusters of galaxies. The strong gravitational lensing power of these clusters will enable us to penetrate through the confusion noise, which sets the ultimate limit on our ability to probe the Universe with Herschel. Here, we present an overview of our survey and a summary of the major results from our Science Demonstration Phase (SDP) observations of the Bullet Cluster (z=0.297). The SDP data are rich, allowing us to study not only the background high-redshift galaxies (e.g., strongly lensed and distorted galaxies at z=2.8 and 3.2) but also the properties of cluster-member galaxies. Our preliminary analysis shows a great diversity of far-infrared/submillimeter spectral energy distributions (SEDs), indicating that we have much to learn with Herschel about the properties of galaxy SEDs. We have also detected the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect increment with the SPIRE data. The success of this SDP program demonstrates the great potential of the Herschel Lensing Survey to produce exciting results in a variety of science areas., Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics (Herschel special issue)

We present new developments in the wavelet analysis method in order to better detect substructures in galaxy clusters by using the complete information obtained from optical data, i.e. galaxy positions and redshifts. Among 48 clusters analyzed, whose optical data are taken mainly from literature sources with the addition of some new data, 14% show strong substructures (i.e. they are bimodal or complex). Several clusters exhibit evidence of substructures at small scales. The presence of substructures in unimodal clusters does not affect the estimates of both velocity dispersions and virial masses. Moreover, the galaxy velocity dispersion is generally in good agreement with the X-ray temperature, according to the expectations of the standard isothermal model for galaxy clusters. These facts suggest that unimodal clusters, which are the most frequent cases in the nearby Universe, are not too far from a status of dynamical equilibrium. On the contrary, the estimates of velocity dispersions and masses for some bimodal or complex clusters strongly depend on whether they are treated as single systems or as sums of different clumps. In these cases the X-ray temperature and the velocity dispersion may be very discrepant.

We present the stellar calibrator sample and the conversion from instrumental to physical units for the 24 micron channel of the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS). The primary calibrators are A stars, and the calibration factor based on those stars is 4.54*10^{-2} MJy sr^{-1} (DN/s)^{-1}, with a nominal uncertainty of 2%. We discuss the data-reduction procedures required to attain this accuracy; without these procdures, the calibration factor obtained using the automated pipeline at the Spitzer Science Center is 1.6% +/- 0.6% lower. We extend this work to predict 24 micron flux densities for a sample of 238 stars which covers a larger range of flux densities and spectral types. We present a total of 348 measurements of 141 stars at 24 micron. This sample covers a factor of ~460 in 24 micron flux density, from 8.6 mJy up to 4.0 Jy. We show that the calibration is linear over that range with respect to target flux and background level. The calibration is based on observations made using 3-second exposures; a preliminary analysis shows that the calibration factor may be 1% and 2% lower for 10- and 30-second exposures, respectively. We also demonstrate that the calibration is very stable: over the course of the mission, repeated measurements of our routine calibrator, HD 159330, show a root-mean-square scatter of only 0.4%. Finally, we show that the point spread function (PSF) is well measured and allows us to calibrate extended sources accurately; Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) and MIPS measurements of a sample of nearby galaxies are identical within the uncertainties., Comment: 33 pages, 10 figures, to be published in PASP

Using a large and well-controlled sample of clusters of galaxies, we investigate the relation between cluster velocity dispersions and X-ray temperatures of intra-cluster gas. The cluster selection is based on nonparametric methods. In particular, we present the 2-D optical maps of our sample clusters, obtained via the kernel adaptive technique, using an optimized smoothing parameter. In order to obtain a reliable estimate of the total velocity dispersion of a cluster, independent of the level of anisotropies in galaxy orbits, we analyze the integrated velocity dispersion profiles over increasing distances from the cluster centers. Both increasing and decreasing integrated profiles are found, but the general trend is a flattening of the integrated velocity dispersion profile at the largest radii, thus enabling us to take the asymptotic value of the integrated profile as an estimate of the total velocity dispersion which is independent of possible anisotropies. Distortions in the velocity fields, the effect of close clusters, the presence of substructures, and the presence of a population of (spiral) galaxies not in virial equilibrium with the cluster potential, are taken into account for reducing the errors in the estimate of the cluster velocity dispersions. Using our final sample of 37 clusters, for which a reliable estimate of the velocity dispersion could be obtained, we derive a relation between the velocity dispersions and the X-ray temperatures, with a scatter reduced by more than $30\%$ with respect to previous works. A chi^2 fit to the temperature-velocity dispersion relation does not exclude the hypothesis that the ratio between galaxy and gas energy density (the so-called beta_spec) is a constant for all clusters. In particular, the value of beta_spec=1, corresponding to energy equipartition, is acceptable. However, the large data scatter in sigma-T relation may suggest the presence of intrinsic dispersion. This intrinsic dispersion may be due to spurious effects (we consider the effect of cluster ellipticity), as well as to physical reasons, different values of beta_spec pertaining to clusters with different properties.

We address the question of how to deal with confusion limited surveys in the midinfrared domain by using informations from higher frequency observations over the same sky regions. Such informations, once applied to apparently extended mid-infrared sources, which are indeed “blends” of two or more different sources, allow us to disentangle the single counterparts and to split the measured flux density into different components. We present the application of this method to the 24 µm Spitzer archival data in the GOODS-EN1 test field, where apparently extended, “blended” sources constitute about 20% of a reliable sample of 983 sources detected above the 5� threshold down to 23 µJy. As higher frequency data-set we have considered the public IRAC images and catalogues on the same field. We show that the 24 µm sample is almost unbiased down to �40 µJy and the careful application of the deblending procedure does not require any statistical completeness correction (at least at the flux level considered). This is probed by direct comparison of our results with those of Chary et al. (2004), who analysed the same data-set through extensive Monte Carlo simulations. The deblending procedure reduces of about 30% the confusion limit of the MIPS 24 µm survey, allowing one to obtain reliable source counts down to � 40µJy. The extrapolation of the source counts down to fainter fluxes suggests that our 24 µm sample is able to resolve �62% of the cosmic background down to a flux level of 38 µJy.

In this Letter, we present the initial characterization of extragalactic 24um sources in the Spitzer First Look Survey (FLS) by examining their counterparts at 8um and R-band. The color-color diagram of 24-to-8 vs. 24-to-0.7um is populated with 18,734 sources brighter than the 3sigma flux limit of 110uJy, over an area of 3.7sq.degrees. The 24-to-0.7um colors of these sources span almost 4 orders of magnitudes, while the 24-to-8um colors distribute at least over 2 orders of magnitudes. In addition to identifying ~30% of the total sample with infrared quiescent, mostly low redshift galaxies, we also found that: (1) 23% of the 24um sources (~1200/sq.degrees) have very red 24-to-8 and 24-to-0.7 colors and are probably infrared luminous starbursts with L(IR)>3x10^(11)Lsun at z>1. In particular, 13% of the sample (660/sq.degrees) are 24um detected only, with no detectable emission in either 8um or R-band. These sources are the candidates for being ULIRGs at z>2. (2) 2% of the sample (85/sq.degrees) have colors similar to dust reddened AGNs, like Mrk231 at z~0.6-3. (3) We anticipate that some of these sources with extremely red colors may be new types of sources, since they can not be modelled with any familiar type of spectral energy distribution. We find that 17% of the 24um sources have no detectable optical counterparts brighter than R limit of 25.5mag. Optical spectroscopy of these optical extremely faint 24um sources would be very difficult, and mid-infrared spectroscopy from the Spitzer would be critical for understanding their physical nature (Abridged)., Accepted for publication in ApJ (Spitzer Special Issue)

We present the final band-merged ELAIS catalogue at 6.7, 15, 90, and 175 $��$m, and the associated data at u,g,r,i,z,J,H,K, and 20cm. The origin of the survey, infrared and radio observations, data-reduction and optical identifications are briefly reviewed, and a summary of the area covered, and completeness limit for each infrared band is given. A detailed discussion of the band-merging and optical association strategy is given. The total catalogues consists of 2860 sources. For extragalactic sources observed in 3 or more infrared bands, colour-colour diagrams are presented and discussed in terms of the contributing infrared populations. Spectral energy distributions are shown for selected sources and compared with cirrus, M82 and Arp220 starburst, and AGN dust torus models. Spectroscopic redshifts are tabulated, where available. For the N1 and N2 areas, the INT ugriz Wide Field Survey, permits photometric redshifts to be estimated for galaxies and quasars. These agree well with the spectroscopic redshifts, within the uncertainty of the photometric method. The redshift distribution is given for selected ELAIS bands and colour-redshift diagrams are discussed. There is a high proportion of ultraluminous infrared galaxies in the ELAIS Catalogue ($> 10 %$ of 15 $��$m sources), many with Arp220-like colours. 10 hyperluminous infrared galaxies and 10 EROs are found in the survey. The large numbers of ultraluminous galaxies imply very strong evolution in the star-formation rate between z = 0 and 1., 21 pages, 31 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

There is a high proportion of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (log 10 of 1-1000 μm luminosity L ir > 12.22) in the ELAIS Catalogue (14 per cent of 15-μm galaxies with known z), many with Arp220-like SEDs. 10 per cent of the 15-μm sources are genuine optically blank fields to r′ = 24: these must have very high infrared-to-optical ratios and probably have z > 0.6, so are high-luminosity dusty starbursts or Type 2 AGN. Nine hyperluminous infrared galaxies (L ir > 13.22) and nine extremely red objects (EROs) (r - K > 6) are found in the survey. The latter are interpreted as ultraluminous dusty infrared galaxies at z ∼ 1. The large numbers of ultraluminous galaxies imply very strong evolution in the star formation rate between z = 0 and 1. There is also a surprisingly large population of luminous (L ir > 11.5), cool (cirrus-type SEDs) galaxies, with L ir - L opt > 0, implying A v > 1.

We report results of a new analysis of a deep 95 mu imaging survey with the photo-polarimeter ISOPHOT on board the Infrared Space Observatory, over a half square degree area within the Lockman Hole. To this end we exploit a newly developed parametric algorithm able to identify and clean spurious signals induced by cosmic-rays impacts and by transient effects and non-linearities in the detectors. These results provide us with the currently deepest -- to our knowledge -- far-IR image of the extragalactic sky. Within the survey area we detect thirty-six sources with S/N>3 (corresponding to a flux of 16 mJy), making up a complete flux-limited sample around 100$ mJy. Reliable sources are detected, with decreasing but well-controlled completeness, down to 20 mJy. The source extraction process and the completeness, the photometric and astrometric accuracies of this catalogue have been tested by us with extensive simulations accounting for all the details of the procedure. We estimate source counts down to a flux of ~30 mJy, at which limit we evaluate that from 10% to 20% of the cosmic IR background has been resolved into sources. The 95mu galaxy counts reveal a steep slope at fluxes lower than 100 mJy (alpha~1.6), in excess of that expected for a non-evolving source population. The shape of these counts agrees with those determined by ISO at 15 and 175 mu, and starts setting strong constraints on the evolution models for the far-IR galaxy populations., Comment: 37 pages, LaTeX file (mn style), 15 figures. We have computed the 15 microns integrated galaxy light produced by ISOCAM galaxies above a sensitivity limit of 50 microJy. It sets a lower limit to the 15 microns extragalactic background light of (2.4+/-0.5) nW/m^2/Hz. The redshift distribution of the ISOCAM galaxies is inferred from the spectroscopically complete sample of galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field North (HDFN). We demonstrate that mid (MIR) and far (FIR) infrared luminosities correlate for local star forming galaxies and that this correlation is consistent with the radio-FIR one up to z ~ 1. From these correlations, about 75 % of the ISOCAM galaxies are found to belong to the class of luminous infrared galaxies (L[IR] >= 10^11 Lsol), with star formation rates of the order of ~ 100 Msol/yr. The cross-correlation with the deepest X-ray surveys from the Chandra and XMM-Newton observatories in the HDFN and Lockman Hole respectively, indicates that at most 20 % of the 15 microns integrated galaxy light is due to active galactic nuclei (AGNs) unless a large population of AGNs was missed by Chandra and XMM-Newton. The contribution of ISOCAM galaxies to the peak of the cosmic infrared background (CIRB) at 140 microns was computed from the MIR-FIR correlations for star forming galaxies and from the spectral energy distribution of the Seyfert 2, NGC 1068, for AGNs. We find that the galaxies unveiled by ISOCAM surveys are responsible for the bulk of the CIRB, i.e (16+/-5) nW/m^2/Hz as compared to the (25+/-7) nW/m^2/Hz measured with the COBE satellite, with less than 10 % due to AGNs. Since the CIRB contains most of the light radiated over the history of star formation in the universe, this means that a large fraction of present-day stars must have formed during a dusty starburst event similar to those revealed by ISOCAM., 19 pages, 10 figures, A&A accepted

International audience; We analyze very deep X-ray and mid-IR surveys in common areas of the Lockman Hole and the Hubble Deep Field-North (HDF-N) to study the sources of the X-ray background (XRB) and to test the standard obscured accretion paradigm. Observations with XMM-Newton and Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) of a substantial area in Lockman are particularly important to sample luminous-but relatively uncommon-obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We detect a rich population of X-ray luminous sources with red optical colors, including a fraction identified with extremely red objects (R-K>5) and galaxies with spectral energy distributions (SEDs) typical of normal massive ellipticals or spirals at z~1. The X-ray luminosities of these objects (L0.5-10keV~1043-1045 ergs s-1) indicate that the ultimate energy source is gravitational accretion, while the X-ray-to-IR flux ratios and the X-ray spectral hardness show evidence of photoelectric absorption at low X-ray energies. An important hint on the physics comes from the mid-IR data at 6.7 and 15 mum, which are well reproduced by model spectra of completely obscured quasars under standard assumptions and line-of-sight optical depths tau0.3mu~=30-40. Other predictions of the standard X-ray background (XRB) picture, such as the distributions of intrinsic bolometric luminosities and the relative fractions of type I and type II objects (1:3), are also consistent with our results. Obscured gravitational accretion is then confirmed as being responsible for the bulk of the X-ray background, since we detect in the IR the downgraded energy photoelectrically absorbed in X-rays: 63% of the faint 5-10 keV XMM sources are detected in the mid-IR by Fadda et al. As discussed there, however, although as much as 90% of the X-ray energy production could be converted to IR photons, no more than 20% (and possibly less) of the cosmic IR background can be attributed to X-ray-loud AGNs. Based partly on observations obtained with the Infrared Space Observatory and with XMM-Newton ESA science missions with instruments and contributions funded by ESA Member States and the USA (NASA).

We critically review the basic assumptions of the standard model for the synthesis of the XRB in the light of new data from ultradeep surveys by Chandra and XMM, resolving major parts of it. Important constraints come in particular from the observed z-distributions of faint hard X-ray sources -- showing large excesses at redshifts (z~0.8) much lower than expected by the synthesis models -- and from their X/optical/IR SEDs combined with the IR counts of type-II AGNs. Our analysis, although supporting the general scheme which interprets the XRB as due to absorbed AGNs with broad N_H distributions, requires major revision of the other postulate of the XRB synthesis models: the AGN unification. We argue that the unification scheme based on a simple orientation effect fails at high redshifts, where galaxy activity is induced by strong interactions and mergers among gas-rich systems. This helps explaining the observational evidence that type-I and II AGNs follow different evolutionary patterns, with type-I quasars providing a very biased trace of this activity. Combined deep X-ray and IR surveys consistently find that the universe has experienced a violent phase of galaxy activity around z~1, probably related with the assembly of massive galaxies, involving both SF and obscured AGN fueling. Roughly 10 to 20% of this activity has involved substantial AGN emission, this fraction likely reflecting the AGN/starburst duty cycle during the activation phase., Comment: 5 pages, to appear in MNRAS

We discuss the constraints set on galaxy evolution by data from deep surveys performed in the mid-IR and far-IR with ISO and with mm telescopes at longer wavelengths. These reveal extremely high rates of evolution for IR galaxies. According to our model, the deep ISO surveys at 15 micron may have already resolved more than 50% of the CIRB intensity, hence allowing to investigate the origin of the CIRB. From our fits to the observed optical-IR SEDs, these objects appear to involve massive galaxies hosting luminous starbursts (SFR 100 Mo/yr). Our evolutionary scheme considers a bimodal star formation (SF), including long-lived quiescent SF, and enhanced SF taking place during transient events recurrently triggered by interactions and merging. We interpret the strong observed evolution as an increase with z of the rate of interactions between galaxies (density evolution) and an increase of their IR luminosity due to the more abundant fuel available in the past (luminosity evolution). Very schematically, we associate the origin of the bulk of the optical/NIR background to the quiescent evolution, while the CIRB is interpreted as mostly due the dusty starburst phase (the latter possibly leading to the formation of galaxy spheroids). The large energy contents in the CIRB and optical backgrounds are not easily explained, considering the moderate efficiency of energy generation by stars: a top-heavy stellar IMF associated with the starburst phase (and compared with a more standard IMF during the quiescent SF) would alleviate the problem. IR data suggest that the strong observed evolution to z~1 should turn over at higher z: scenarios in which a dominant fraction of stellar formation occurs at very high-z are not supported by our analysis., Comment: 30 pages, version with improved references, to appear in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present a tool adapted to the detection of faint mid-infrared sources within ISOCAM mosaics. This tool is based on a wavelet analysis which allows us to dis- criminate sources from cosmic ray impacts at the very limit of the instrument, four orders of magnitudes be- low IRAS. It is called PRETI for Pattern REcognition Technique for ISOCAM data, because glitches with tran- sient behaviors are isolated in the wavelet space, i.e. fre- quency space, where they present peculiar signatures in the form of patterns automatically identied and then reconstructed. We have tested PRETI with Monte-Carlo simulations of fake ISOCAM data. These simulations al- lowed us to dene the fraction of remaining false sources due to cosmic rays, the sensitivity and completeness limits as well as the photometric accuracy as a function of the observation parameters. Although the main scientic applications of this tech- nique have appeared or will appear in separated papers, we present here an application to the ISOCAM-Hubble Deep Field image. This work completes and conrms the results already published (Aussel et al. 1999).

Jean Jaurès was certainly among the most authoritative leaders of the Second International and putative father of French socialism. Dead assassinated on the eve of the Great War, he embodied the lacerating doubts of the socialists of his time suspended between loyalty to the internationalist cause and patriotism, however seeking a harmonious synthesis of identity. In his writings and speeches he repeatedly addressed the issue of the suffering of European societies in the face of the tragedy of the First World War and became an interpreter and political spokesman. An original reading that mitigates many of the myths that surround the outbreak of the Great War, it is also true that there were many signs that in previous years had brought to the idea of ​​a real conflict and that had raised anxieties and questions in the most sensitive consciences. We compute the distribution of internal velocity dispersions, a, for a sample of 153 nearby Abell-ACO galaxy clusters (z less than or equal to 0.15), each of which has at least 30 available galaxy redshifts. Throughout our work we applied homogeneous procedures to the analysis of the redshifts of the clusters selected. Previous sigma-distributions, based on smaller cluster samples, are complete for the Abell richness class R greater than or equal to 1. In order to improve sigma completeness, we enlarge our sample by including also poorer clusters. By resampling our 153 clusters, according to the richness class frequencies of the Edinburgh-Durham Cluster Catalog (EDCC), we obtain a cluster sample which can be taken as representative of the nearby Universe. Our cumulative sigma-distribution agrees with previous distributions within their sigma completeness limit (sigma greater than or equal to 800 km s(-1)). We estimate that our distribution is complete for at least sigma greater than or equal to 650 km s(-1). In this completeness range, a fit of the form dN alpha sigma(alpha)d sigma gives alpha = -(7.4(-0.8)(+0.7)), in fair agreement with results coming from the X-ray temperature distributions of nearby clusters.

For three clusters at moderate redshifts, Miralda-Escude and Babul (1995) reported a discrepancy between the masses estimated from X-ray and from strong gravitational lensing analyses. This discrepancy was suggested to give a possible solution for the so-called baryon fraction problem. We analyze the internal structure of clusters A1689 and A2218. for which galaxy redshifts are available, by applying the method of wavelet analysis, which uses both positions and redshifts of galaxies. The two clusters show the presence of two structures superimposed along the line of sight, which have different mean redshifts and much smaller velocity dispersions than that of the system as a whole. We suggest that these clusters are cases of the on-going merging of two clumps. The cluster alignment, possibly along a large scale structure filament, could explain the high central cluster mass obtained from the lensing analysis. Moreover, the observed X-ray temperature, and thus the derived mass, could be enhanced by collision-heated gas during cluster merging. Our analysis of optical data suggests that the two clusters are less massive than estimated both from lensing and from X-ray analysis. Hence, we are far from lowering the estimate of the baryon fraction in galaxy clusters.
