To better constrain the structure of the Laurentian – Peri-Gondwana suture zone, maps and a 2-dimensional regional cross-section model constrained by seismic data and surface geology have been developed by forward and inverse modeling the aeromagnetic and gravity fields. The Central Piedmont Suture (CPS), the boundary between the Laurentian Inner Piedmont and the Peri-Gondwanan Carolina terrane is a low-angle thrust fault (~ 30°) ramping up from an Alleghanian mid-crustal detachment at depths of about 12 km. ADCOH and COCORP seismic data image anticlinal structures in the footwalls of the Hayesville thrust and the CPS, above the Alleghanian decollement. The footwall rocks have previously been interpreted as Paleozoic shelf strata on the basis of sub-horizontal seismic reflectors; however, the high densities required to fit the observed gravity anomaly suggest that the folded footwall reflectors may need to be reinterpreted as horse blocks or duplex structures of Grenvillian basement. The Appalachian paired gravity anomaly can be explained by an increase in crustal thickness and a decrease in upper crustal density moving northwestward from the Carolina Terrane toward the Appalachian core. A change in lower crustal density is not required, so that Grenville basement rocks may extend farther to the southeast than previously thought. The 5 to 10 km of Alleghanian uplift and exhumation predicted by P-T crystallization data compiled in this paper can be easily accommodated by thrusting on four major low-angle thrust systems: Great Smoky Mountain Thrust (GSMT), Hayesville, Brevard, and CPS. Unroofing of metamorphic core complexes by normal faulting may therefore not be required to explain the observed exhumation. Alleghanian collision along the southeastern Appalachian margin was predominately orthogonal to strike consistent with the previous reconstructions that call for the counter-clockwise rotation of Gondwanan West Africa, creating head-on collision in the southern Appalachians and at least 370 km of shortening.

Pilates is a series of exercises based on whole-body movement and may improve mobility in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Pilates on walking performance in people with MS.30 individuals with MS who were not restricted to a wheelchair or scooter (Patient-Determined Disease Steps scale score7) were randomized to receive Pilates (twice weekly) and massage therapy (once weekly) or once-weekly massage therapy only (control group). The Pilates was delivered in a group setting (five to ten participants per session). The primary outcome was change in walking performance (6-Minute Walk Test) after 12 weeks. Secondary outcomes included functional ability (Timed Up and Go test), balance (Fullerton Advanced Balance Scale), flexibility (sit and reach test), body composition (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), core endurance (plank-hold test), and muscle strength and voluntary activation (quadriceps). Intention-to-treat analysis was performed using a two-factor repeated-measures analysis of variance.Walking distance increased by a mean (SD) of 52.4 (40.2) m in the Pilates group versus 15.0 (34.1) m in the control group (group × time, P = .01). Mean (SD) time to complete the Timed Up and Go test decreased by 1.5 (2.8) seconds in the Pilates group versus an increase of 0.3 (0.9) seconds in the control group (group × time, P = .03). There were no other significant differences between groups over time.Pilates improved walking performance and functional ability in persons with MS and is a viable exercise option to help manage the disease.

Green bean production accounts for 2.4% of the total value of Australian vegetable production and was Australia's tenth largest vegetable crop in 2008-2009 by value. Australian green bean production is concentrated in Queensland (51%) and Tasmania (34%) where lost productivity as a direct result of insect damage is recognised as a key threat to the industry (AUSVEG, 2011). Green beans attract a wide range of insect pests, with thrips causing the most damage to the harvestable product, the pod. Thrips populations were monitored in green bean crops in the Gatton Research Facility, Lockyer Valley, South-east Queensland, Australia from 2002-2011. Field trials were conducted to identify the thrips species present, to record fluctuation in abundance during the season and assess pod damage as a direct result of thrips. Thirteen species of thrips were recorded during this time on bean plantings, with six dominant species being collected during most of the growing season: Frankliniella occidentalis, F. schultzei, Megalurothrips usitatus, Pseudanaphothrips achaetus, Thrips imaginis and T. tabaci. Thrips numbers ranged from less than one thrips per flower to as high as 5.39 thrips per flower. The highest incidence of thrips presence found in October/November 2008, resulted in 10.74% unmarketable pods due to thrips damage, while the lowest number of thrips recorded in April 2008 caused a productivity loss of 36.65% of pods as a result of thrips damage.

Objectives: To define pQCT precision errors, least-significant-changes, and identify associated factors for bone outcomes at the radius and tibia in children. Methods: We obtained duplicate radius and tibia pQCT scans from 35 children (8-14yrs). We report root-mean-squared coefficient of variation (CV%RMS) and 95% limits-of-agreement to characterize repeatability across scan quality and least-significant-changes for bone outcomes at distal (total and trabecular area, content and density; and compressive bone strength) and shaft sites (total area and content; cortical area content, density and thickness; and torsional bone strength). We used Spearman’s rho to identify associations between CV% and time between measurements, child’s age or anthropometrics. Results: After excluding unanalyzable scans (6-10% of scans per bone site), CV%RMS ranged from 4% (total density) to 19% (trabecular content) at the distal radius, 4% (cortical content) to 8% (cortical thickness) at the radius shaft, 2% (total density) to 14% (trabecular content) at the distal tibia and from 2% (cortical content) to 6% (bone strength) at the tibia shaft. The ability to generate deep flow in massive crystalline rocks is governed by the interconnectivity of the fracture network and its permeability, which in turn is largely dependent on the in situ stress field. The increase of stress with depth reduces fracture aperture, leading to a decrease in rock mass permeability. The frequency of natural fractures also decreases with depth, resulting in less connectivity. The permeability of crystalline rocks is typically reduced to about 10 � 17 –10 � 15 m 2 at targeted depths for enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) applications, that is, >3 km. Therefore, fluid injection methods are required to hydraulically fracture the rock and increase its permeability. In the mining sector, fluid injection methods are being investigated to increase rock fragmentation and mitigate high-stress hazards due to operations moving to unprecedented depths. Here as well, detailed understanding of permeability and its enhancement is required. This paper reports findings from a series of hydromechanically coupled distinct-element models developed in support of a hydraulic fracture experiment testing hypotheses related to enhanced permeability, increased fragmentation, and modified stress fields. Two principal injection designs are tested as follows: injection of a high flow rate through a narrow-packed interval and injection of a low flow rate across a wider packed interval. Results show that the development of connected permeability is almost exclusively orthogonal to the minimum principal stress, leading to strongly anisotropic flow. This is because of the stress transfer associated with opening of tensile fractures, which increases the confining stress acting across neighboring natural fractures. This limits the hydraulic response of fractures and the capacity to create symmetric isotropic permeability relative to the injection wellbore. These findings suggest that the development of permeability at depth can be improved by targeting a set of fluid injections through smaller packed intervals instead of a single longer injection in open boreholes.

The performance of supercapacitor cells with activated carbon (AC) electrodes was improved by adding a small amount of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The electrode structure investigated comprised AC, four different types of MWCNTs and two polymer binders, polyvinylidene fluoride or polyvinyl alcohol. All fabricated devices were of the electrochemical double layer capacitor type. The organic electrolyte used was tetraethyl ammonium tetrafluoroborate (TEABF4) in two different solvents: propylene carbonate or acetonitrile (AN). The electrodes were characterised with scanning electron microscopy and tested for their specific surface area and pore size distribution. The electrode fabrication process was fine-tuned by investigating the effect of the coating thickness on the supercapacitor cell performance. It was established that an AC/MWCNT-based supercapacitor with 30 μm thick roll-coated, composite electrodes of just 0.15%w/w MWCNT content provided superior tested power and energy densities of 38 kW/kg and 28 W h/kg, respectively, compared to 18 kW/kg and 17 W h/kg for AC only–based cells in a 1.5 TEABF4/AN electrolyte. The increased energy density was attributed to a fine lace of MWCNTs covering the AC microparticles with visible 20–30 nm lace pores and to the high specific area of micropores.

A trap with a twist: evaluating a bycatch reduction device to prevent rockfish capture in crustacean traps. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 70:114–122. Bycatch, or the incidental capture of non-target species, occurs in fisheries around the world, with often detrimental ecological consequences. Bycatch reduction devices (BRDs) that increase catch specificity have been used successfully in some fisheries, and the development of such devices remains an important component of the global effort to reduce bycatch rates. We tested novel devices designed to exclude juvenile rockfish (Sebastes spp.) from traps used to catch spot prawns (Pandalus platyceros), a commercially important species in British Columbia, Canada. The devices included reductions in trap opening sizes and novel bent-tunnel openings. Reducing trap opening size did not affect bycatch rates of rockfish or other non-target fish species. In contrast, bent-tunnel BRDs eliminated rockfish bycatch, and two of the bent-tunnel variants also excluded other fish species. However, prawn catch rates were reduced in all modified gear, and large prawns were often excluded more than small prawns. Videos recorded in situ revealed that prawn attempts to enter traps took longer and were more likely to fail in BRD-equipped than in unmodified traps. We conclude that bent-tunnel BRDs have the potential to be useful, but improvements are needed to increase prawn catch to levels similar to that of unmodified traps.

Summary 1. Behavioural research in deep water (>40 m depth) has traditionally been expensive and logistically challenging, particularly because the light and sound produced by underwater vehicles make them unsuitably disruptive. Yet, understanding the behaviour of deep-water animals, especially those targeted by exploitation, is important for conservation. For example, understanding interactions between animals and deep-water fishing gear could inform the design of devices that minimize bycatch. 2. We describe the ‘TrapCam’, a self-contained, high-definition video system that requires neither the support of a vessel once deployed nor special equipment to deploy or retrieve. This system can record 13-h videos at 1080p resolution and is deployable on any substrata at depths of up to 100 m. The system is inexpensive (

High density, low power 180nm and 130nm CMOS SRAMs have been manufactured on bulk silicon wafers using a modified CMOS commercial process that hardens the junction isolation and has demonstrated latchup immunity at temperatures >200°C. TCAD simulations confirmed by high temperature testing indicate that a latch up free performance of SRAMs manufactured on bulk silicon modified by the HardSIL™ technology will easily extrapolate to 250°C. These process modifications result in significantly more robust CMOS circuits making them more suitable for highly reliable operations in extreme environments – such as radiation and high temperature. The unique capability of HardSIL™ technology to enhance existing IC products has demonstrated excellent results with several commercial circuits. This new approach enables the conversion of commercial off the shelf (COTS) circuits to hardened hi-rel commercial circuits with dramatically improved survivability to either radiation or high temperatures. Latchup immunity has been demonstrated on two high-density bulk silicon CMOS SRAMs: a 16Mbit asynchronous SRAM manufactured at the 180nm design node and an 8Mbit dual port synchronous SRAM manufactured at 130nm. Both parts were produced in a high-volume, low-defect commercial CMOS fabrication facility in the USA. The SRAM parts were packaged in ceramic packages and characterized at temperatures ranging from 25°C to 225°C. Characterization data indicates both excellent static leakage and dynamic circuit performance for both SRAMs at these elevated temperatures. Device test structures designed with typical layout spacing rules were evaluated to quantify latchup and isolate the various leakage mechanisms. Detailed results for these test structures are presented and compared to the SRAMs using the modified HardSIL™ process.

The spot prawn (Pandalus platyceros) trap fishery in British Columbia is endorsed by conservation organizations owing to the assumption of minimal bycatch. However, reported capture of juvenile rockfish (Sebastes spp.) in prawn traps has raised concern due to declines in abundance of many rockfish stocks. We document the bycatch observed in a 10-year (1999–2008) fishery-independent research survey that employed traps that are similar to the traps used in the commercial spot prawn fishery. Research traps produced 0.16–0.20 kg of non-target catch per kg of spot prawn catch, with bycatch consisting mainly of a variety of molluscs, non-target crustaceans, echinoderms, and fish. The overall rate of rockfish catch was low—0.015 rockfish per trap. The annual rate of rockfish bycatch has increased since 2004, to 0.039 rockfish per trap in 2008, while catch rates of other species have remained relatively constant. Our results confirm that spot prawn traps produce a low amount of bycatch by weight. However, they also suggest that rockfish mortality due to prawn trapping should be quantified in the commercial prawn fishery to determine how this source of mortality may affect rockfish stocks. Furthermore, research into bycatch reduction technology to improve trap selectivity, and thus reduce rockfish bycatch, would be desirable.

There are 54 million working adults in the United States without bachelor's degrees (Pusser et al., 2007). Many would like to obtain a college degree but need an educational program that fits their needs. A viable alternative to a traditional college program is an accelerated program in a cohort format. This article highlights best practices for developing and administering accelerated cohorts for working adults. Specific information is provided about accelerated cohort programs at Mount Olive College in North Carolina, a small, private, not-for-profit institution. Over the last four years, Mount Olive College has increased enrollment an average of 12% each year. Eighty percent of the students enrolled are working adults pursuing a degree through an accelerated cohort program.

In September 2004 the NICE institute revised its guidelines on the management of primary inguinal hernias to include laparoscopic repair of unilateral hernias. While published trials have confirmed the equal efficacy of the two approaches, it is not clear what impact a switch to laparoscopic repairs would have on resources and patient throughput in a Day Surgery Unit. Method: All elective hernia repairs performed in a one-year period were considered. Data were obtained from operation notes, discharge summaries and out-patient records. Operating times are routinely documented in theatre. Results: Of the 351 operations studied, 150 were performed laparoscopically predominantly by an extraperitoneal (TEP) approach. Six required conversion to an open procedure. There was no significant difference in operating times, total theatre time or recovery room times between the two groups (51 min, 75 min and 34 min for the laparoscopic group and 53 min, 74 min and 31 min for the open repair group). Among the laparoscopic repair group there were 48 bilateral hernias and 20 recurrent hernias while 190 of the 201 open repairs were for primary unilateral hernias. Rates of overnight stay and immediate complications were similar between the groups though haematoma was more common following open repair (7 vs 2). Conclusions: There is no difference in theatre times, immediate complication rates or rates of overnight stay between open and laparoscopic repair of inguinal hernia. Routine laparoscopic repair of primary unilateral inguinal hernia is a viable alternative within the Day Surgery Unit.

The aim of this study was to assess the ability of artificial neural network (ANN) in predicting survival in patients undergoing surgical resection for carcinoma of oesophagus and oesophago-gastric junction.From January 1995 to August 2004 patients who underwent surgery for oesophageal and gastric carcinoma were identified. Biographical data, body mass index and pathological minimal cancer dataset were used to design an ANN. Post-operative survival was assessed at 1 and 3 years. Sixty percent of data was used to train and validate the ANN and 40% was used to evaluate the accuracy of trained ANN in predicting survival. This was compared with Union Internacional Contra la Cancrum UICC TNM classification system.Two hundred and sixteen patients underwent resectional surgery for oesophageal and OGJ carcinoma. The accuracy of the ANN in predicting survival at 1 and 3 years was 88% (sensitivity: 92.3%, specificity: 84.5%, DP = 2.3) and 91.5% (sensitivity of 94.61%, specificity: 88%, DP = 2.72), respectively. These figures were significantly better than 1- and 3-year survival predictions using the UICC TNM classification system 71.6% (sensitivity of 66.4%, specificity: 75.5%, and DP1) and 74.7% (sensitivity of 70.5%, specificity: 74.9%, DP1), respectively (P0.01) (P0.05).ANNs are superior to the UICC TNM classification system in correlating with survival following resection of carcinoma of oesophagus and OG junction and can become valuable tools in the management of patients with oesophageal carcinoma.

Background Mortality in patients with acute pancreatitis is associated with the number of failing organs and the severity and reversibility of organ dysfunction. The aim of this study was to assess the significance of early systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) in the development of multiorgan dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and death from acute pancreatitis. Methods Data for all patients with a diagnosis of acute pancreatitis between January 2000 and December 2004 were reviewed. Serum C-reactive protein (CRP), Acute Physiology And Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II scores and presence of SIRS were recorded on admission and at 48 h. Marshall organ dysfunction scores were calculated during the first week of presentation. Presence of SIRS and raised serum CRP levels on admission and at 48 h were correlated with the cumulative organ dysfunction scores in the first week. Results A total of 759 patients with acute pancreatitis were identified, of whom 45 (5·9 per cent) died during the index admission. SIRS was identified in 162 patients on admission and was persistent in 138 at 48 h. The median (range) cumulative Marshall score in patients with persistent SIRS was significantly higher than that in patients in whom SIRS resolved and in those with no SIRS (4 (0–12), 3 (0–7) and 0 (0–9) respectively; P < 0·001). Thirty-five patients (25·4 per cent) with persistent SIRS died from acute pancreatitis, compared with six patients (8 per cent) with transient SIRS and four (0·7 per cent) without SIRS (P < 0·001). No correlation was observed between CRP level on admission and Marshall score (P = 0·810); however, there was a close correlation between CRP level at 48 h and Marshall score (P < 0·001). Conclusion Persistent SIRS is associated with MODS and death in patients with acute pancreatitis and is an early indicator of the likely severity of acute pancreatitis.

Recursive parametric series solutions are developed for polynomial ODE systems, based on expanding the system components in series of a form studied by Weiss. Individual terms involve first-order driven linear ODE systems with variable coefficients. We consider Lotka-Volterra systems as an example.

The involvement of NMDA-type glutamate receptor in neuronal injury established in experimental stroke and neurotrauma models has been recently challenged by failures in treatment of stroke/neurotrauma patients with NMDA receptor antagonists. NMDA receptor activity is known to be essential for mediating a multitude of physiological functions. However, how NMDA receptors are recruited to cause neuronal injury remains unclear. Here we report that the time period during which initial NMDA receptor up-regulation occurs is critical for the recruitment of NMDA receptors causing neuronal injury during extracellular calcium (Ca2+) reperfusion in cultured hippocampal neurons, and represents the key period for neuronal protection by NMDA receptor antagonists. Furthermore, we identified that via intracellular sodium (Na+), extracellular Ca2+ depletion induces the up-regulation of NMDA receptor gating. Taken together, our study provides direct experimental evidence suggesting that determination of when and how NMDA receptors are recruited to cause neurotoxicity is essential for guiding treatment via antagonism of NMDA receptor functions.

We have implemented a system of tracking mobile robots and mapping an unstructured environment, using up to 25 wireless sensor nodes in an indoor setting. These sensor nodes form an ad hoc network of beacons, self-localize with respect to three anchor nodes, and then track the locations of mobile robots in the field. The system described here was motivated by search and rescue applications, and has been demonstrated in real physical environments.

Chain modular robots form systems with many degrees of freedom which are capable of being reconfigured to form arbitrary chain-based topologies. This reconfiguration requires the detaching of modules from one point in the system and reattaching at another. The internal errors in the system (especially with large numbers of modules) are such that accurate movement of chain ends, required for the attaching of modules, can be extremely difficult. A three-phase docking process is described that utilizes both open- and closed-loop techniques. This process has been shown to work with an early version. Issues raised during this testing have been addressed in a later version. Discussion of these issues, their solutions, and preliminary results of the testing the latest version are given.

Electrochemical and electrochromic properties of a series of cathodically coloring copolyimides containing a perylene diimide moiety are reported. Well-defined redox responses were obtained in solutions containing large cation electrolytes that can interact well with the reduced intermediates of perylene diimide. Reversible switch between red, blue, and violet colors corresponded well to the three redox statesneutral, radical anion, and dianion formsof perylene diimide. The fluorescence intensity of these polyimides gradually decreased from the neutral state to the final reduced state.

A series of perylene-containing polyimides and copolyimides have been synthesized and characterized by DSC, TGA, NMR, UV−vis, and X-ray powder diffraction measurements. Xerographic electrical measurements indicated that perfectly alternating copolyimides had higher photosensitivities than those of homopolyimides and random copolyimide. After annealing, polyimide films showed a red-shift in UV−vis absorption and improved photosensitivity due to an increase in crystallinity, as indicated by wide-angle X-ray diffraction measurements.

Measurement of the phase relaxation time and nonlinear susceptibility of gold nanoparticles is demonstrated, using incoherent light. The diameters of the gold particles ranged from 50 to 400 A. Experiments were performed in the vicinity of the surface plasmon resonance frequency and the resonantly enhanced susceptibility was found to be approximately 10−16 m2 V−2. The dephasing time was determined to be of the order of, or faster than, 20 fs.

Intensity-dependent absorption measurements for determining the non-linear optical susceptibility of aqueous colloidal solutions of gold nanoparticles are presented. The diameters of the gold particles ranged from 50 to 400 A. Measurements were performed in the vicinity of the surface plasmon resonance frequency and the resonantly enhanced susceptibility was found to be of the order of 5 · 10-16m2V-2. This is attributed to a change in the Fermi-Dirac distribution of electrons about the Fermi level and is caused by an increase in their temperature due to absorption of resonant photons. The intensity dependence of the absorption showed that the system can be described as inhomogeneously broadened.

A technical, powder, platinum-on-graphite catalyst has been investigated up to atomic scale by transmission electron microscopy (OAI) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The catalyst had been prepared from a colloidal platinum sol. STM confirms, in addition to spherical particles, the presence of raft structures on the support surface, which had been suggested by the TEM images. The height of these raft structures varies from one to ten atomic layers.

The purpose of this work was to investigate and improve the performance of supercapacitor cells with carbon-based nanocomposite electrodes. The electrode structure comprised activated carbon (AC), four types of multi-wall nanotubes (MWNTs) and two alternative polymer binders, Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) or Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). Electrode fabrication involved various stages of mixing and dispersion of the AC powder and carbon nanotubes, rolling and coating of the AC/MWNT/binder paste on an aluminium substrate which also served as current collector. The organic electrolyte utilised was 1M tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TEABF4) fully dissolved in propylene carbonate (PC). All devices were of the electrochemical double layer capacitor (EDLC) type, incorporating four layers of tissue paper as separator material. The surface topography of the so fabricated electrodes was investigated with scanning electrode microscopy (SEM). Overall cell performance was evaluated with a multi-channel potentiostat/galvanostat/impedance analyser. Each supercapacitor cell was subjected to Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) at various scan rates from 0.01 V/s to 1 V/s, Charge-Discharge at a fixed current steps (2 mA) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) with frequency range from 10 mHz to 1 MHz. It was established that an AC-based supercapacitor with 0.15%w/w MWNT content and 30 μm roll-coated, nanocomposite electrodes provided superior energy and power and energy densities while the cells was immersed in the electrolyte; well above those generated by the AC-based EDLC cells.
