Elasmobranchs (sharks, rays, and skates) are caught throughout fisheries globally, leading to over one-third of species being threatened with extinction

To date, comparative studies among species at global scales have mostly focused on horizontal movements. Our study addresses the knowledge gap of vertical movements by compiling the first global synthesis of vertical habitat use by elasmobranchs from data obtained by deployment of 989 biotelemetry tags on 38 elasmobranch species. Elasmobranchs displayed high intra- and interspecific variability in vertical movement patterns. Substantial vertical overlap was observed for many epipelagic elasmobranchs, indicating an increased likelihood to display spatial overlap, biologically interact, and share similar risk to anthropogenic threats that vary on a vertical gradient. We highlight the critical next steps toward incorporating vertical movement into global management and monitoring strategies for elasmobranchs, emphasizing the need to address geographic and taxonomic biases in deployments and to concurrently consider both horizontal and vertical movements, Data analysis was funded by the Bertarelli Foundation through the Marine Science program through grants to D.J.C., B.A.B., and S.A. Tooth enamel secreted by ameloblasts is the hardest material in the human body, acting as a shield protecting the teeth. However, the enamel is gradually damaged or partially lost in over 90% of adults and cannot be regenerated due to a lack of ameloblasts in erupted teeth. Here we use sci-RNA-seq to establish a spatiotemporal single-cell atlas for the developing human tooth and identify regulatory mechanisms controlling the differentiation process of human ameloblasts. We reveal key signaling pathways involved between the support cells and ameloblasts during fetal development and recapitulate those findings in a novel human ameloblast in vitro differentiation from iPSCs. We furthermore develop a mineralizing enamel organ-like 3D organoid system. These studies pave the way for future regenerative dentistry and therapies toward genetic diseases affecting enamel formation.

Illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing poses a major threat to effective management of marine resources, affecting biodiversity and communities dependent on these coastal resources. Spatiotemporal patterns of industrial fisheries in developing countries are often poorly understood, and global efforts to describe spatial patterns of fishing vessel activity are currently based on automatic identification system (AIS) data. However, AIS is often not a legal requirement on fishing vessels, likely resulting in underestimates of the scale and distribution of legal and illegal fishing activity, which could have significant ramifications for targeted enforcement efforts and the management of fisheries resources. To help address this knowledge gap, we analyzed 3 years of vessel monitoring system (VMS) data in partnership with the national fisheries department in the Republic of the Congo to describe the behavior of national and distant-water industrial fleets operating in these waters. We found that the spatial footprint of the industrial fisheries fleet encompassed over one-quarter of the Exclusive Economic Zone. On average, 73% of fishing activity took place on the continental shelf (waters shallower than 200 m). Our findings highlight that VMS is not acting as a deterrent or being effectively used as a proactive management tool. As much as 33% (13% on average) of fishing effort occurred in prohibited areas set aside to protect biodiversity, including artisanal fisheries resources, and the distant-water fleet responsible for as much as 84% of this illegal activity. Given the growth in industrial and distant-water fleets across the region, as well as low levels of management and enforcement, these findings highlight that there is an urgent need for the global community to help strengthen regional and national capacity to analyze national scale data sets if efforts to combat IUU fishing are to be effective.Amenazas de la Pesca Ilegal, No Regulada y No Reportada para la Biodiversidad y la Seguridad Alimentaria en la República del Congo Resumen La pesca ilegal, no regulada y no reportada (INN) representa una amenaza importante para el manejo efectivo de los recursos marinos, lo que afecta a la biodiversidad y a las comunidades que dependen de estos recursos costeros. The soil and its biota can shape the development of colonizing vascular plant communities. Because they occupy soil surfaces where most seeds disperse to, biological soil crusts (biocrusts) are uniquely positioned to influence vascular plant communities established by direct seeding, e.g., for restoration. We created mesocosms of soil overtopped by intact biocrust transplants from the field, varying in key community attributes: total cover, species richness, and proportional cover of mosses relative to lichens. We seeded the same diverse mixture of vascular plants into all mesocosms, including desired native species and problematic exotic invasive species. We tracked plant community development for two full growing seasons, both under ambient outdoor conditions and with supplemental irrigation to remove the influence of water limitation. Under ambient conditions, we found that total biocrust cover suppressed exotic plant emergence and biocrust richness slightly promoted native emergence (r = −0.23 to −0.39) but had weaker and less consistent effects on cover of either native or exotic plants (r ≤ |0.25|). Early emergence events were generally strong drivers of vascular plant recruitment (r = 0.17–0.78) and continued to influence community composition after 2 years, suggesting a priority effect. Biocrust cover also promoted final plant biomass under ambient conditions (r = 0.17–0.33) but did not influence the total cumulative number of native species (r ≤ |0.07|) nor the fecundity of exotics (r ≤ |0.08|). Biocrusts’ influence on total vascular plant biomass was minor. When water was added, biocrust effects sometimes switched from positive or negative to neutral, or vice-versa, indicating that our detection probability of biocrust effects on plants changes with moisture availability. Our results demonstrate that the condition of pre-existing biocrust communities can influence—but not strongly dictate—the outcome of multi-species restoration seedings, mostly positively or neutrally under normal conditions, but switching to potentially negatively under irrigated conditions. Our study also suggests that locations with more intact and richer biocrust communities might be slightly more conducive to successful seeding outcomes, while also providing additional contributions to ecosystem functions. As such, biocrusts, alongside vascular plants, have a role in restoring damaged or degraded ecosystems.

Globally, marine turtles are considered threatened throughout their range, and therefore conservation practitioners are increasingly investing resources in marine protected areas to protect key life history stages and critical habitats, including foraging grounds, nesting beaches and inter-nesting areas. Empirical data on the distribution of these habitats and/or the spatial ecology and behaviour of individuals of many marine turtle populations are often lacking, undermining conservation efforts, particularly along the Atlantic coast of Africa. Here we contribute to the knowledge base in this region by describing patterns of habitat use for nine green turtles Chelonia mydas tagged with satellite platform transmitter terminals at a foraging ground in Loango Bay, Republic of the Congo, one of only a few documented mainland foraging grounds for marine turtles in Central Africa. Analyses of these data revealed that core areas of habitat use and occupancy for a wide range of size/age classes were restricted to shallow waters adjacent to Pointe Indienne in Loango Bay, with most individuals showing periods of high fidelity to this area. These data are timely given the Congolese government recently announced its intention to create a marine conservation zone to protect marine turtles in Loango Bay. Despite the small sample size of this study, these data exemplify the need for comprehensive strategies that span national jurisdictions, as we provide the first documented evidence of linkages between green turtle foraging sites in Central Africa (Loango Bay, Republic of the Congo) and Southern Africa (Mussulo Bay, Angola).

Metal-organic framework-808 has been functionalized with 11 amino acids (AA) to produce a series of MOF-808-AA structures. The adsorption of CO2 under flue gas conditions revealed that glycine- and DL-lysine-functionalized MOF-808 (MOF-808-Gly and -DL-Lys) have the highest uptake capacities. Enhanced CO2 capture performance in the presence of water was observed and studied using single-component sorption isotherms, CO2/H2O binary isotherm, and dynamic breakthrough measurements. The key to the favorable performance was uncovered by deciphering the mechanism of CO2 capture in the pores and attributed to the formation of bicarbonate as evidenced by 13C and 15N solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy studies. Based on these results, we examined the performance of MOF-808-Gly in simulated coal flue gas conditions and found that it is possible to capture and release CO2 by vacuum swing adsorption. MOF-808-Gly was cycled at least 80 times with full retention of performance. This study significantly advances our understanding of CO2 chemistry in MOFs by revealing how strongly bound amine moieties to the MOF backbone create the chemistry and environment within the pores, leading to the binding and release of CO2 under mild conditions without application of heat.

Biodiversity hotspots are often found in areas of high environmental diversity. This may be explained by an abundance of varying niche space promoting coexistence, buffering effects allowing for persistence during periods of climate change, and by a diversity of selective pressures driving speciation. Thus, environmentally diverse areas are attractive targets for conservation. Few aspects of the environment are unchanging, however, and strategies targeting comparatively durable surrogates for biodiversity are a focus of applied conservation research. For example, topographic diversity (topodiversity), or the variation of landforms present in an area, has proven useful for site prioritization among some taxa. The suitability of this approach for conservation of ecologically important taxa, such as bee pollinators, has not been studied exhaustively, however. Furthermore, the importance of topographic features smaller than 30 m is generally unknown, due to the limited availability of fine-grained elevation data, though could prove relevant for this group and others. We gathered sub-meter elevation data with structure-from-motion photogrammetry and surveyed for bees and plants in the Sapphire Mountains of western Montana, USA to explore if fine-grained topodiversity data are useful for site prioritization. We calculated topodiversity metrics for a range of spatial grain-sizes (0.25–250 m) and neighborhoods (1–500 m) and conducted sensitivity analyses studying correlations with biodiversity patterns. We prioritized sites according to rarity-weighted richness (RWR), which indicates complementarity, or the degree to which a site can contribute unique species to a preserve network. Bee RWR was most strongly correlated with 2 m grain topodiversity data (r 0.73), while plant RWR was most strongly correlated with 235 m data (r 0.44). Though 2 m data were optimal in bees, larger resolutions (35 m) also were effective for site prioritization and use of these meso-grained surrogates only increased site prioritization error by one rank position. We explored multiple regression models predicting RWR with topodiversity metrics of various grains and neighborhood but found no improvement over linear models incorporating only the single most correlated grain-size and neighborhood metric. The best model for plants performed relatively poorly for the task of bee site prioritization. Modeling complementarity with pooled biodiversity data aggregated from both groups slightly improved site rankings for bees and slightly decreased ranking performance in plants. While the costs of fine-grained elevational remote sensing technologies may be high at present, national efforts to gather these data are on the horizon and may facilitate conservation of bees and other groups at the local scale.

Fully recrystallized hexagonal Zirconium was subjected to controlled hot compression tests. Deformation above 723 K showed both flow saturation, characteristic of dynamic recovery, and also the presence of fine equiaxed grains, indicating dynamic recrystallization (DRx). Though data from relative work hardening were inconclusive, a combination of transmission Kikuchi diffraction plus transmission electron microscopy clearly confirmed the presence of DRx grains. A separation between the deformed and the DRx grains was not possible with microtexture or nano-indentation data. Local internal friction measurements (or tanδ values), however, clearly distinguished the DRx grains from both statically recrystallized (SRex) and the hot deformed grains.

Detecting the effects of introduced artificial structures on the marine environment relies upon research and monitoring programs that can provide baseline data and the necessary statistical power to detect biological and/or ecological change over relevant spatial and temporal scales. Here we report on, and assess the use of, Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) systems as a technique to monitor diversity, abundance and assemblage composition data to evaluate the effects of marine renewable energy infrastructure on mobile epi-benthic species. The results from our five-year study at a wave energy development facility demonstrate how annual natural variation (time) and survey design (spatial scale and power) are important factors in the ability to robustly detect change in common ecological metrics of benthic and bentho-pelagic ecosystems of the northeast Atlantic. BRUV systems demonstrate their capacity for use in temperate, high energy marine environments, but also how weather, logistical and technical issues require increased sampling effort to ensure statistical power to detect relevant change is achieved. These factors require consideration within environmental impact assessments if such survey methods are to identify and contribute towards the management of potential positive or negative effects on benthic systems.

Marine turtles are of conservation concern throughout their range, with past population declines largely due to exploitation through both legal and illegal take, and incidental capture in fisheries. Whilst much research effort has been focused on nesting beaches and elaborating migratory corridors, these species spend the vast majority of their life-cycle in foraging grounds, which are, in some species, quite discrete. To understand and manage these populations, empirical data are needed on distribution, space-use, and habitats to best inform design of protective measures. Here we describe space-use, occupancy, and wide-ranging movements derived from conventional flipper tagging and satellite tracking of sub-adult green turtles (Chelonia mydas) within the coastal waters of the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI; 2011–2017). 623 turtles were fitted with flipper tags, with 69 subsequently recaptured, five of which in international waters. Sixteen individual turtles of between 63 and 81 cm curved carapace length were satellite tracked for a mean 226 days (range: 38–496). Data revealed extended periods of occupancy in the shallow coastal waters within a RAMSAR protected area. Satellite tracking and flipper tagging showed wide-ranging movements, with flipper tag recaptures occurring in waters off Nicaragua (n = 4), and Venezuela (n = 1). Also, four of 16 satellite tracked turtles exhibiting directed movements away (displaced >450 km) from TCI waters traveling through nine geo-political zones within the Caribbean-Atlantic basin, as well as on the High Seas. One turtle traveled to the Central American coast before settling on inshore habitat in Colombia’s waters for 162 days before transmission ceased, indicating ontogenetic dispersal to a distant foraging habitat. These data highlight connectivity throughout the region, displaying key linkages between countries that have previously only been linked by genetic evidence. This study also provides evidence of the importance of the Turks and Caicos Islands marine protected area network and importance of effective management of the sea turtle fishery for regional green turtle populations.

Bycatch is a significant cause of population declines of marine megafauna globally. While numerous bycatch mitigation strategies exist, acoustic alarms, or pingers, are the most widely adopted strategy for small cetaceans. Although pingers have been shown to be an effective measure for numerous species, there are some concerns about their long-term use. Bycatch is recognized as a persistent problem in waters around Cornwall, United Kingdom, where several cetacean species are resident, with harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) being the most-commonly sighted. In this study, we assessed the effects of a Banana Pinger (Fishtek Marine Limited) on harbour porpoises in Cornwall between August 2012 and March 2013. Two passive acoustic loggers (C-PODs; Chelonia Limited) were deployed 100 m apart to record cetacean activity during cycles of active and inactive pinger periods. Harbour porpoises were 37% less likely to be detected at the C-POD near the pinger when the pinger was active, while they were only 9% less likely to be detected 100 m further away. The effect of the pinger was constant over the study period at both C-PODs despite the temporal variation in harbour porpoise detections. In addition, we found no evidence of reduced pinger effect with changing environmental conditions. Furthermore, harbour porpoise detections at the C-POD near the pinger did not depend on the time elapsed since the pinger turned off, with harbour porpoises returning to the ensonified area with no delay. Together these results suggest that (1) harbour porpoises did not habituate to the pinger over an 8-month period, (2) the pinger effect is very localized, and (3) pinger use did not lead to harbour porpoise displacement over the study period, suggesting an absence of long-term behavioral effects. We suggest that the deployment of pingers on fishing nets would likely reduce net-porpoise interactions, thereby mitigating bycatch of harbour porpoises and potentially other cetacean species. As the small-scale fishery dominates in United Kingdom waters, there is an acute need for cost-effective mitigation strategies with concurrent monitoring to be implemented rapidly in order to address the problem of harbour porpoise, and more generally, cetacean bycatch.

With wildfires increasing in extent and severity in the Southwestern USA, practitioners need new tools to rehabilitate recently burned ecosystems. Fire mosses consist of three species, Ceratodon purpureus, Funaria hygrometrica, and Bryum argenteum, that naturally colonize burned landscapes, aggregate soils, and can be grown rapidly in the greenhouse. We explored the efficacy of fire moss as a passive and active postfire rehabilitation tool. First, we conducted a natural survey of moss colonization and function on 10 severely burned areas in the Southwestern USA. We tested 11 landscape scale predictors of fire moss cover and found that it is most strongly influenced by insolation, pre-fire vegetation type, soil organic carbon, and time since fire. We also found that, when compared to bare soils, fire mosses increase infiltration by 50% on average and soil stability by more than 100%. Using this information, we selected two study sites on which to inoculate greenhouse grown fire moss. Directly after a wildfire near Flagstaff, Arizona we added sieved moss, finely ground moss, and moss combined with diatomaceous earth and rolled into pellets (n=15). After two years of growth, B. argenteum was the only successful species and no treatment had attained more than 1% cover on average, pellet treated plots had higher moss colonization (p Four months after a wildfire in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico, we added greenhouse cultivated moss that was sieved as well as high and low cover of pellets (n= 12). After 1.5 years of growth, we found increased B. argenteum cover with a mean of 10.5% on plots that received high cover of pellets compared to 5.1% cover for controls (p= .02). Currently we are analyzing data to determine if this cover influenced point scale erosion and infiltration metrics. Our results indicate that fire mosses are functionally important colonizers of north facing severely burned hillslopes, however more research is necessary to develop them as an active rehabilitation tool.

Migratory movements in response to seasonal resources often influence population structure and dynamics. Yet in mobile marine predators, population genetic consequences of such repetitious behaviour remain inaccessible without comprehensive sampling strategies. Temporal genetic sampling of seasonally recurring aggregations of planktivorous basking sharks, Cetorhinus maximus, in the Northeast Atlantic (NEA) affords an opportunity to resolve individual re-encounters at key sites with population connectivity and patterns of relatedness. Genetic tagging (19 microsatellites) revealed 18% of re-sampled individuals in the NEA demonstrated inter/multi-annual site-specific re-encounters. High genetic connectivity and migration between aggregation sites indicate the Irish Sea as an important movement corridor, with a contemporary effective population estimate (Ne) of 382 (CI = 241–830). We contrast the prevailing view of high gene flow across oceanic regions with evidence of population structure within the NEA, with early-season sharks off southwest Ireland possibly representing genetically distinct migrants. Finally, we found basking sharks surfacing together in the NEA are on average more related than expected by chance, suggesting a genetic consequence of, or a potential mechanism maintaining, site-specific re-encounters. Long-term temporal genetic monitoring is paramount in determining future viability of cosmopolitan marine species, identifying genetic units for conservation management, and for understanding aggregation structure and dynamics.

State-space models are important tools for quality control of error-prone animal movement data. The near real-time (within 24 h) capability of the Argos satellite system aids dynamic ocean management of human activities by informing when animals enter intensive use zones. This capability also facilitates use of ocean observations from animal-borne sensors in operational ocean forecasting models. Such near real-time data provision requires rapid, reliable quality control to deal with error-prone Argos locations. We formulate a continuous-time state-space model for the three types of Argos location data (Least-Squares, Kalman filter, and Kalman smoother), accounting for irregular timing of observations. Our model is deliberately simple to ensure speed and reliability for automated, near real-time quality control of Argos data. We validate the model by fitting to Argos data collected from 61 individuals across 7 marine vertebrates and compare model-estimated locations to GPS locations. Estimation accuracy varied among species with median Root Mean Squared Errors usually < 5 km and decreased with increasing data sampling rate and precision of Argos locations. Including a model parameter to inflate Argos error ellipse sizes resulted in more accurate location estimates. In some cases, the model appreciably improved the accuracy of the Argos Kalman smoother locations, which should not be possible if the smoother uses all available information. Our model provides quality-controlled locations from Argos Least-Squares or Kalman filter data with slightly better accuracy than Argos Kalman smoother data that are only available via reprocessing. Simplicity and ease of use make the model suitable both for automated quality control of near real-time Argos data and for manual use by researchers working with historical Argos data., 25 pages, 10 figures

Chemical Epidemiology Studies (CES) can be both protective for humans of adverse health effects of chemicals as well as cause alarm leading to unwarranted remedial action and litigation. Inherent problems in conducting CES especially related to the study design goals and assessment of exposure are recognized. Many CES report adverse health outcomes at very low exposure levels implying that humans are uniquely or especially sensitive to the toxicity of these chemicals. Such unique sensitivity to humans would be especially important to scientists in human physiology, medical and toxicology communities. CES are currently appearing in the open literature more frequently and it is expected that they will be appearing even more frequently in the future especially if animal toxicity testing is reduced or eliminated. Experts on the nature of the reported adverse health outcomes should be playing a more critical role in the interpretation of CES because they are best suited to understand the many factors affecting natural and induced variability. Should animal toxicity testing be reduced, the role of toxicologists in the interpretation of CES will need to evolve. This manuscript addresses the need for more uniform standards in conducting, reporting, and review by independent, fully focused experts if CES studies reported in the open literature will be included in the health risk characterization and litigation of chemicals.

The choice of alloying method for ferrous powder metallurgy alloys is often dictated by the oxidation potential of the alloying elements used in powder and compact manufacture. Silicon is effective in improving properties of ferrous PM steels; however, if added to the melt prior to atomization, the likelihood of oxidation is high. Alternatively, Si-rich and more complex particulates can be combined with the base powder, i.e., iron or low-alloy steel, with alloying occurring by solid-state diffusion during sintering. The effectiveness of these additives to improve material properties is dependent on their distribution throughout the material volume, as determined by diffusion of each added element. In this study, the distribution of silicon was quantified using energy-dispersive spectroscopy on an iron-based alloy composition. These data were compared with the volume fraction of the various transformation products in cross sections of hardenability samples using both light and electron microscopy. Predictions on the effects of local chemical composition, cooling rate, and microstructure are made.

Bycatch of marine megafauna by small-scale fisheries is of growing global concern. The southeastern Pacific sustains extensive fisheries that are important sources of food and employment for millions of people. Mismanagement, however, jeopardizes the sustainability of ecosystems and vulnerable species. We used survey questionnaires to assess the impact of small-scale gillnet fisheries on sea turtles across 3 nations (Ecuador, Peru and Chile), designed to fill data gaps and identify priority areas for future conservation work. A total of 765 surveys from 43 small-scale fishing ports were obtained (Ecuador: n = 379 fishers, 7 ports; Peru: n = 342 fishers, 30 ports; Chile: n = 44 fishers, 6 ports). The survey coverage in study harbors was 28% for Ecuador, 37.0% for Peru, and 62.7% for Chile. When these survey data are scaled up across the fleets within surveyed ports, the resulting estimate of total annual bycatch across the study harbors is 46 478 turtles; where Ecuador is 40 480, Peru 5 828 and Chile 170 turtles. Estimated mortality rates vary markedly between countries (Ecuador: 32.5%; Peru 50.8%; Chile 3.2%), leading to estimated lethal takes of 13 225, 2 927, and 6 turtles for Ecuador, Peru, and Chile, respectively. These estimates are remarkably large given that the ports surveyed constitute only 16.4, 41, and 22% of the national gillnet fleets in Ecuador, Peru, and Chile, respectively. Limited data from observer-based surveys in Peru suggest that information from surveys are reliable and still informative. Information from surveys clearly highlight Ecuador and Peru as priority areas for future work to reduce turtle bycatch, particularly given the status of regional populations such as leatherback and hawksbill turtles.

Biological soil crust (biocrust) communities, though common and important in the intermountain west, have received little research attention. There are gaps in understanding what influences biocrust species’ abundance and distributions in this ecoregion. Climatic, edaphic, topographic, and biotic forces, in addition to anthropogenic disturbance can all influence the biocrust. We determined the relative influence of several possible environmental filters in biocrust communities of western Montana (USA) grasslands at two spatial scales. The larger scale exploited strong topographically-dictated climatic variation across >60km2, while the smaller scale focused on differences among distinct microsites within ~700m2 plots. We detected a total of 96 biocrust taxa, mostly lichens. Biocrust richness at each site ranged from 0 to 39 species, averaging 14 species. Insolation, aspect, and disturbance history were the strongest predictors of biocrust richness, abundance, and species turnover across the landscape; soil texture was influential for some biocrust community properties. Steep, north-facing slopes that receive longer periods of shade harbored higher diversity and cover of biocrust than south-facing sites. At a small scale, interspaces among native herbaceous communities supported the greatest diversity of biocrust species, but microsites under shrub canopies supported the greatest cover. We found that, among the variables investigated, tillage, insolation, soil texture and the associated vegetation community were the most important drivers of biocrust abundance and species richness. This study can inform the practice of restoration and conservation, and also guide future work to improve predictions of biocrust properties.

Eutectoid wire rods were subjected to controlled thermo-mechanical processing (TMP). Both increased cooling rate and applied stress during the austenite-to-pearlite decomposition produced significant changes in the microstructure: major increases in the pearlite’s axial alignment and minor decreases in the interlamellar spacing. The pearlite alignment was correlated with changes in the ferrite crystallographic texture and the state of residual stress. Microstructural engineering, improved axial alignment of pearlite, through controlled TMP gave a fourfold increase in torsional ductility. TMP of eutectoid steel thus appears to have interesting technological possibilities.

Grain boundary engineering of Fe-based austenitic stainless steels and other materials has been successful in producing a large increase in twin and twin related grain boundaries from a wide range of thermomechanical treatments. However, the exact mechanisms and effective grain boundary network descriptors to create the heavily twinned microstructures are yet to be fully understood. In this study, we provide insight into the grain boundary engineering process by examining sequential progression of the same spatial location of a twin related microstructure through thermomechanical processing. The results show that clusters of twin related grain boundaries called twin related domains form during primary recrystallization. The size of the twin related domains increases as the level of strain falls toward the critical strain for recrystallization. Growth of twin related domains during recrystallization results in the formation of twin boundaries behind the migrating grain boundary front. Formation of higher order twin boundaries occurs when two separate grain boundary fronts of the same twin related domain impinge upon each other. We also present relevant microstructural descriptors with emphasis on twin related domain statistics to recrystallization phenomena in grain boundary engineering materials.

Syntrichia ruralis is a cosmopolitan moss that occupies steep environmental gradients. In arid to semi-arid regions of the world it is a key component of biological soil crusts, which are fundamental to healthy dryland ecosystem processes. As such, S. ruralis has attracted the attention of conservationists seeking to restore degraded biological soil crust communities and their associated vascular flora. Here, we generate genomic data for S. ruralis populations that span climatic gradients across the Colorado Plateau of the southwestern USA to investigate the contributions of neutral and deterministic processes to the partitioning of genomic structure. Although S. ruralis appears to be highly dispersible, geographic proximity significantly predicts genomic similarity. In addition, even when taking into account apparently high migration rates among populations and spatial autocorrelation of allele frequencies, some genomic variation is explained by environmental gradients correlated with elevation and latitude. Consequently, efforts to restore dryland ecosystems by establishing S. ruralis as a foundation should include strategies to ensure that propagule sources of this moss are environmentally stratified and targeted to the current/future climates of restoration sites.

A growing body of research supports the feasibility of biocrust rehabilitation. Identifying populations of key species that are amenable to cultivation and that are resilient in rehabilitation contexts would advance the efficacy of these technologies. Here we investigate the growth and stress response of the cosmopolitan biocrust moss, Syntrichia ruralis. We sampled populations of S. ruralis along a precipitation seasonality gradient from the Colorado Plateau ecoregion of the western United States. We cultivated these populations in an experiment manipulating duration of hydration periods on a weekly cycle. We then treated greenhouse grown materials with brief, stressful watering events, measuring how many events they could survive. All populations grew at an accelerated rate compared to growth in a natural setting, at least doubling biomass in five months. Increasing duration of hydration periods led to more growth in all but one population. Volunteer biocrust algae and cyanobacteria developed during cultivation, and differed among populations. Greenhouse grown mosses differed in their response to stressful watering, with the most susceptible populations dying at half the number events compared to the most tolerant. These findings argue for informed selection and deployment of Syntrichia ruralis populations for soil rehabilitation.

Near eutectoid fully pearlitic wire rod (5.5 mm diameter) was taken through six stages of wire drawing (drawing strains of 0 to 2.47). The as-drawn (AD) wires were further laboratory annealed (LA) to re-austenitize and reform the pearlite. AD and LA grades, for respective wire diameters, had similar pearlite microstructure: interlamellar spacing (lambda) and pearlite alignment with the wire axis. However, LA grade had lower hardness (for both phases) and slightly lower fiber texture and residual stresses in ferrite. Surprisingly, essentially identical tensile yield strengths in AD and LA wires, measured at equivalent spacing, were found. The work hardened AD had, as expected, higher torsional yield strengths and lower tensile and torsional ductilities than LA. In both wires, stronger pearlite alignment gave significantly increased torsional ductility.

This study involved fully pearlitic wires of seven different diameters (5.5-1.6 mm). All samples were laboratory annealed to re-austenitize and were then air-cooled to reform the pearlite structure. Morphological alignment of the pearlite, along the wire axis, improved significantly, 32% to 93%, as the wire diameter decreased. This improvement coincided with increases in the < 110 > ferrite fiber texture, and falls in the axial residual stresses. In all the wires, the majority of the pearlite lamellae appeared to align, in a 2-D analysis, with minimum elastic stiffness (E-Min, under simple compression) for the ferrite (alpha). This correlation increased from 80% to 98% with decrease in wire diameter and fall in axial residual stresses. 3-D microstructures by serial sectioning, 3-D rotations seeking E-min and observations on coarse pearlite, indicated that {011}(alpha) and < 001 > (alpha) were, respectively, the pearlite interface (or habit plane) and growth direction.
