Abstract

Introducción: Cuidados adecuados de nutrición clínica constituyen parte integral del completo tratamiento de los pacientes hospitalizados. Para la práctica correcta de la terapia nutricional, los profesionales del equipo de salud necesitan conocimientos específicos. Es de interés conocer el nivel de estos conocimientos en el Paraguay. Materiales y métodos: A 174 personas de hospitales universitarios del Paraguay (29% médicos, 29% estudiantes de sexto año de Medicina de la Universidad Nacional de Asunción, 11% farmacéuticos, 24% licenciados en enfermería, 7% nutricionistas) se suministró un cuestionario de selección múltiple de 20 puntos para determinar el nivel de conocimiento en nutrición según la calificación obtenida. Resultados: La calificación mediana de un total de 20 puntos fue de 6 (0-15). Los médicos obtuvieron una mediana de 6 (2-15), los estudiantes 7 (2-14), los farmacéuticos 7 (0-15), los licenciados en enfermería 3 (0-11) y las nutricionistas 9 (4-13). El puntaje de las nutricionistas fue significativamente mayor que el de los otros grupos (p < 0,005). Conclusión: La formación en nutrición clínica en el personal de blanco de hospitales universitarios en Paraguay no es completa. El nivel de conocimiento es superior en las nutricionistas.Background: Adequate clinical nutrition care is an integral part of the complete treatment of hospitalised patients, requiring specific knowledge from the health care team. Abstract

We describe the implementation of an OPT plate to perform optical projection tomography (OPT) on a commercial wide-field inverted microscope, using our open-source hardware and software. The OPT plate includes a tilt adjustment for alignment and a stepper motor for sample rotation as required by standard projection tomography. Depending on magnification requirements, three methods of performing OPT are detailed using this adaptor plate: a conventional direct OPT method requiring only the addition of a limiting aperture behind the objective lens; an external optical-relay method allowing conventional OPT to be performed at magnifications >4x; a remote focal scanning and region-of-interest method for improved spatial resolution OPT (up to ~1.6 μm). All three methods use the microscope's existing incoherent light source (i.e. arc-lamp) and all of its inherent functionality is maintained for day-to-day use. OPT acquisitions are performed on in vivo zebrafish embryos to demonstrate the implementations' viability.

Abstract

Recent randomized clinical trials have shown the efficacy of a restrictive transfusion strategy in critically ill children. The impact of these trials on pediatric transfusion practice is unknown. Additionally, long-term trends in pediatric transfusion practice in the ICU have not been described. We assessed transfusion practice over time, including the effect of clinical trial publication.Single-center, retrospective observational study.A 10-bed PICU in an urban academic medical center.Critically ill, nonbleeding children between the ages of 3 days and 14 years old, admitted to the University of Maryland Medical Center PICU between January 1, 1998, and December 31, 2009, excluding those with congenital heart disease, hemolytic anemia, and hemoglobinopathies.None.During the time period studied, 5,327 patients met inclusion criteria. Of these, 335 received at least one RBC transfusion while in the PICU. The overall proportion transfused declined from 10.5% in 1998 to 6.8% in 2009 (p = 0.007). Adjusted for acuity, the likelihood of transfusion decreased by calendar year of admission. In transfused patients, the pretransfusion hemoglobin level declined, from 10.5 g/dL to 9.3 g/dL, though these changes failed to meet statistical significance (p = 0.09). Neonatal age, respiratory failure, shock, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, and acidosis were associated with an increased likelihood of transfusion in both univariate and multivariable models.The overall proportion of patients transfused between 1998 and 2009 decreased significantly. The magnitude of the decrease varied over time, and no additional change in transfusion practice occurred after the publication of a major pediatric clinical trial in 2007. Greater illness acuity and younger patient age were associated with an increased likelihood of transfusion.

Abstract

In spite of technical developments, electronic publishing in science and technology has had a slow start. This is caused by several factors, essentially managerial in character, such as standardization of text and image representation, quality assurance, the filing of reference versions, charging, and copyright control. Furthermore, in spite of the growth of the networked R&D community, not all users have easy access. Many of these problems are reduced in an area where much of the primary information proceeds via not‐yet‐copyrighted preprints, which are largely produced by advanced text‐processing techniques and put on “electronic bulletin boards”. Reports on some recent advances in this area, creating a direct access to bibliographic data and full‐text documents via a central OPAC and a distributed system of document servers.

Abstract

This paper considers a spin-dependent neutron interaction with optical potentials (fields) from the strong interaction, the weak interaction, and an assumed T-violating interaction. The vector sum of these fields and their interferences determines an effective field of the target with an angular position in space due to polar and azimuthal angles. The phase of the azimuthal component is found to be the sum of two angles. The tangent of the first angle is equal to the ratio of the T-violating forward-scattering amplitude D to the weak-interaction amplitude C. The quantity is of interest. The tangent of the second angle depends on the spin rotation in the residual pseudomagnetic field of the target, and it can be treated as a background effect. This paper shows that the second angle has different signs in measurements with polarized and unpolarized neutrons; thus, two measurements allow it to be compensated for. In addition, the use of the Ramsey method of separated oscillatory fields for measurement of the neutron spin rotation angle, depending on the phase of the rf field in the Ramsey cell, allows a cosine-like spectrum to be measured. This spectrum is called a phase spectrum. The phase spectra measured with polarized and more » unpolarized targets have a phase shift. The measurements of this phase shift with polarized and nonpolarized neutrons at a p-wave resonance enable the ratio D/C to be isolated. We also describe the algorithm for separating the ratio D/C, taking into account the influence of the fringing fields of the Ramsey coil magnet and the target magnet. « less

Abstract

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is one of the world's largest engineering and construction organizations. As such, it must use new and existing technologies in the most effective and efficient manner possible. Also, as a Federally funded activity, USACE is mandated by the Federal Technology Transfer Act of 1986 to transfer commercially viable technologies into the public marketplace. With this mandate in mind, a pilot project was initiated between the U.S. Army, Construction Engineering Research Laboratories (USACERL) and the Indiana State University (ISU). Under this project, USACERL worked with ISU's School of Technology to establish the Construction Technology Transfer Center (CTTC) and to develop mechanisms to transfer the results of Corps construction-related research to small- and medium-sized construction companies throughout the Wabash Valley Region. The goals of the effort have been defined by three phases: Phase I, survey the needs of small- and medium-sized construction firms in the region in terms of both automation skills and technology opportunities; Phase II, development of technology transfer activities based on the results of the survey findings and an analysis of Corps technologies; Phase III, delivery of Corps technologies to the target contractor population.

3roton-antiproton elastic scattering at cm energy 540 GeV has been studied in the t range 0.14 ⩽ − t ⩽ 0.26 GeV 2 . The data is well fitted by an exponential form exp( bt ) with b = 13.3 ± 1.5 GeV −2 .

Abstract

We report the observation of five muonic Z 0 decays. The mass and cross section times branching ratio is consistent with the previous measurements of Z 0 →e + e − . Three of the muonic decays have unexpected features. One event is of the type Z 0 →μ + μ − γ. Two of the Z 0 →μ + μ − decays are accommpanied by several (>4) energetic ( E T > 10 GeV) jets which are difficult to explain within the framework of standard QCD corrections.

Abstract

We report the results of two searches made on data recorded at the CERN SPS Proton-Antiproton Collider: one for isolated large- E T electrons, the other for large- E T neutrinos using the technique of missing transverse energy. Both searches converge to the same events, which have the signature of a two-body decay of a particle of mass ∼80 GeV/ c 2 . The topology as well as the number of events fits well the hypothesis that they are produced by the proces p + p → W ± + X , with W ± →e ± + ν ; where W ± is the Intermediate Vector Boson postulated by the unified theory of weak and electromagnetic inter- actions.

Abstract

We report the observation of five events in which a missing transverse energy larger than 40 GeV is associated with a narrow hadronic jet and of two similar events with a neutral electromagnetic cluster (either one or more closely spaced photons). We cannot find an explanation for such events in terms of backgrounds or within the expectations of the Standard Model.

Abstract

The two-jet cross section measured in the UA1 apparatus at the CERN p p Collider has been analysed in terms of the centre-of-mass scattering angle θ and the scaled longitudinal parton momenta x1 and x2. The angular distribution dσ/d cos σ rises rapidly as cos → 1, independent of x2 and x2, as expected in vector gluon theories (QCD). The differential cross section in x1 and x2 is consistent with factorization and provides a measurement of the proton structure function F(x) = G(x) + 4 9 [Q(x) + Q (x)] at values of the four-momentum transfer squared, -t ≈ 2000 GeV2. Over the range x = 0.10−0.80 the structure function shows an exponential x dependence and may be parametrized by the form F(x) = 6.2 exp (−9.5x).

Abstract

We describe the construction, calibration and performance of the central electromagnetic calorimeter of the UA1 experiment at the CERN proton-antiproton collider. The calorimeter is of the lead-scintillator sandwich type. It is 26.4 radiation lengths thick and covers a surface of about 50 m 2 . We estimate the resolution of the calorimeter for electrons of energy greater than 1 GeV to be the sum in quadrature of 15% √E ( E in GeV) and a constant 3%. The first term comes from the inherent resolution of the calorimeter due to sampling fluctuations and photostatistics. The second term comes from uncertainties in the calibration procedure and dominates the resolution for electrons from W and Z 0 decay. The uncertainty in the overall energy scale also reflects the uncertainties in the calibration procedure and is estimated to be 3%.

Abstract

Results are presented on two-jet and three-jet cross sections, measured in the UA1 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) pp Collider, at the highest available subprocess cms energies ( s >150 GeV ). Precise measurements of the two-jet angular distribution are consistent with previous results but show significant scale-breaking effects. The three-jet Dalitz plot and the three-jet angular distributions show evidence for final- and initial-state bremsstrahlung processes, in agreement with the leading-order QCD predictions. A comparison of the yield of wide-angle three-jet events with the yield of two-jet events at smaller scattering angles gives for the strong interaction coupling constant: α s ( K 3J K 2J )=0.16±0.02±0.03 at Q2≈4000 GeV2, where the factor K 3J K 2J may plausibly be assumed to be close to unity.

Abstract

Inclusive fragmentation of jets into charged particles has been studied in the UA1 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) pp Collider at s = 540 GeV for jets having a transverse energy above 30 GeV. The observed fragmentation function is very similar to that seen in e+e−jets and is therefore indicative of similar hadronization processes for gluons and quarks. Scaling with the energy of the jet is valid to a good approximation, although slight deviations are suggested by the data. The average transverse momentum with respect to the jet axis for jets with ET > 30 GeV is 600 MeV/c for particles having z > 0.1 and increases slowly with the jet energy.

Abstract

A sample of two-jet events from the UA1 experiment at the CERN pp Collider has been used to study the fragmentation of high-energy quark and gluon jets into charged hadrons. Compared with lower-energy jets observed in e + e − and pp collisions, the fragmentation function measured in the present experiment is softer (i.e. peaked to smaller values of z ) and the mean internal transverse momentum is larger, mainly because of the effects of the QCD scaling violations. Using our knowledge of the quark and gluon structure functions in the proton, together with the QCD matrix elements, a statistical separation of quark and gluon jets is achieved within the present experiment. The fragmentation function for the gluon jets is found to be softer, and the angular spread of the fragmentation products larger, than is the case for quark jets.

Abstract

Muons of high transverse momentum p μ T have been observed in the large drift chambers surrounding the UA1 detector at the CERN 540 GeV pp collider. For an integrated luminosity of 108 nb −1 , 14 isolated muons have been found with p T > 15 GeV/ c . They are correlated with a large imbalance in total transverse energy, and show a kinematic behaviour consistent with the muonic decay of the Intermediate Vector Boson W ± of weak interactions. The partial cross section is in agreement with previous measurements for electronic decays and with muon-electron universality. The W mass is determined to be m W = 81 +6 −7 GeV/ c 2 .

Abstract

We report evidence for the production of the charged D∗ mesons in pp collisions at s = 540 GeV . The search was confined to the charged particle fragments of hadronic jets, which are expected to be predominantly gluon jets in this experiment. The fragmentation function and production rate for D∗ in jets of average transverse momentum of 28 GeV/c are given.

Abstract

We report the observation of 21 dimuon events at the CERN p p Collider with the UA1 detector. The events range in invariant dimuon mass from 2 to 22 GeV / c 2 . The properties of these events are given. The bulk of the events are consistent with heavy-flavour production (mainly b b ) with a few candidates for Drell-Yan production. There remain a few events which are difficult to interpret in terms of these processes, in particular two events with isolated, like-sign muons.

Abstract

A sample of 52 Intermediate Vector Boson decays in the ( v e e) channel is described. They were produced at the CERN SPS Collider for an integrated luminosity of 0.136 pb −1 . Both production and decay properties fit well with expectations from the Standard Model of weak interactions. An improved value for the W mass is given and compared with the previously published value for the Z 0 mass.

Abstract

We report the observation of four electron-positron pairs and one muon pair which have the signature of a two-body decay of a particle of mass ∼ 95 GeV/c2. These events fit well the hypothesis that they are produced by the process p + p → Z 0 + X ( with Z 0 → l + + l − ) , where Z0 is the Intermediate Vector Boson postulated by the electroweak theories as the mediator of weak neutral currents.

Abstract

A search for events having the characteristics of cosmic ray Centauros has been made in 540 GeV centre of mass proton-antiproton collisions, using information on charged particle multiplicities and transverse momenta from our central detector image chamber, together with energy deposition in our calorimeters. No such events were found in 48 000 low bias events.

Abstract

The observation of an apparent excess of radiative Z 0 decays into e + e − γ and μ + μ − γ has prompted the search for massive eνγ and μνγ final states containing an energetic photon. No events were found other than those consistent with QED radiative effects in leptonic W decays. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 0.136 pb −1 produced at the CERN super proton synchrotron (SPS) collider. An upper limit on the occurrence of such events is given.

Abstract

Proton-antiproton elastic scattering at CM energy 540 GeV has been studied in the t -range 0.04 t 2 . The data are well fitted by the form exp ( bt ) with b = 17.1 ± 1.0 GeV −2 for | t | = 0.04 − 0.18 GeV su 2 and b = 13.7 ± 0.2 ± 0.2 GeV −2 for | t | = 0.21−0.45 GeV 2 . A luminosity measurement combined with the optical theorem gives σ tot = 67.6 ± 5.9 ± 2.7 mb and σ e1 / σ tot = 0.209 ± 0.018 ± 0.008.

Abstract

In events at centre of mass energy 540 GeV from the CERN p p collider, we have found clear evidence for correlations in rapidity and azimuthal angle between high transverse momentum charged particles. These correlations increase with transverse momentum and are much stronger than the general two-particle correlations in minimum bias events. By analogy to ISR results, a qualitative interpretation in terms of hard scattering and fragmentation of partons is discussed.

Abstract

With a segmented total absorption calorimeter of large acceptance, we have measured the total transverse energy spectrum for pp collisions at s 1 2 = 540 GeV up to ΣE T = 130 GeV in the pseudo-rapidity range | η | ΣE T > 40 GeV , the fraction of events with two jets increases with Σ E T ; this event structure is dominant for ΣE T > 100 GeV. We measure the inclusive jet cross section up to E T (jet) = 60 GeV and the two-jets mass distribution to 120 GeV/ c 2 . The measured cross sections are compatible with the predictions of hard scattering models based on QCD.

Abstract

The inclusive jet cross section has been measured in the UA1 experiment at the CERN p p Collider at centre-of-mass energies √s = 546 GeV and √s = 630 eV. The cross sections are found to be consistent with QCD predictions, The observed change in the cross section with the centre-of-mass energy √s is accounted for in terms of xT scaling.

Abstract

We present a detailed study of hadronic jets obtained in a data sample taken in the UA1 detector with a localized transverse energy trigger. We discuss the average shape of jets in terms of energy and charged particle content, and compare this to data generated in Monte Carlo programs. We further extend the previously reported inclusive jet cross section to the region of E T = 100 GeV. A comparison with theoretical models of cross sections for events with more than two jets is also given.

Abstract

A clear signal is observed for the production of an isolated large-transverse-momentum lepton in association with two or three centrally produced jets. The two-jet events cluster around the W± mass, indicating a novel decay of the Intermediate Vector Boson. The rate and features of these events are not consistent with expectations of known quark decays (charm, bottom). They are, however, in agreement with the process W → t b followed by t → blv, where t is the sixth quark (top) of the weak Cabibbo current. If this is indeed so, the bounds on the mass of the top quark are 30 GeV/c2

Abstract

The production properties of a sample of 172 charged intermediate vector bosons produced at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron Collider are described. The production cross-section, the longitudinal- and transverse-momentum distributions and the properties of hadronic jet activity produced in association with the weak bosons are in agreement with the expectations of the QCD-improved Drell-Yan mechanism.

Abstract

We have developed a method for reading out scintillator plates in a compact calorimeter using embedded wavelength-shifting fibres coupled to photomultipliers. A test calorimeter using this technique, with uranium plates as the passive medium, was placed in test beams of 1 to 80 GeV. Results on resolution, uniformity, and electron-pion discrimination are presented, as well as a discussion of compensation (the near-equality of electron and hadron responses).

Abstract

Background: Adequate clinical nutrition care is an integral part of the complete treatment of hospitalised patients, requiring specific knowledge from the health care team. The aim of this study is to assess, in Paraguay, the health care team ability in clinical care nutrition., Materials and Methods: A survey was made including 174 people of Paraguay university hospitals (29% physicians, 29% medicine graduating students, 11% pharmaceutics, 24% nurses, 7% dieticians), by answering voluntarily a multiple choice questionnaire of 20 items., Results: The median score of the 20 questions was 6 (0-15). Physicians obtained a median of 6 (2-15), graduating students 7 (2-14), pharmaceutics 7 (0-15), nurses 3 (0-11), and dieticians 9 (4-13). The dieticians obtained a significantly higher score than the other groups (p < 0.005)., Conclusions: The knowledge about clinical nutrition in the health care members from university hospitals is not adequate. The level of education in clinical nutrition is better in the dietician.
