The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams will be completed in late 2021. We report here on the current efforts to commission the first stages of the 200-MeV/u superconducting, continuous wave heavy-ion linac. The statuses of the cryogenic plant and its distribution system, the accelerator cryomodule commissioning and operations, the ion source and front end transport development, the radio-frequency quadrupole commissioning, and thenbeam dynamics development to support high-power operation are reviewed. Plans for commissioning the remainder of the linac systems are presented.

The orbit can harbour a variety of lesions and their approach and treatment should be dictated by anatomical location and pathology. The proximity of the orbit to the sinonasal cavity and anterior and middle cranial fossae make it an ideal location for collaboration among neurosurgeons, otolaryngologists, and ophthalmologists. Traditional orbitotomy, microsurgical transcranial, and endoscopic endonasal approaches (EEA) provide 360-degree access for biopsy or resection of both primary intraorbital lesions and those involving the structures surrounding the orbits. The most appropriate surgical corridor will avoid crossing the vertical plane of the optic nerve and will also avoid excess retraction of the globe. A multidisciplinary team with all available specialties is therefore ideal for management of orbital lesions. This chapter outlines the anatomy, clinical presentation, and techniques that guide surgeons in management of these lesions.

Objectives The incidence of seizures following a craniotomy for tumor removal varies between 15 and 20%. There has been increased use of endoscopic endonasal approaches (EEAs) for a variety of intracranial lesions due to its more direct approach to these pathologies. However, the incidence of postoperative seizures in this population is not well described. Methods This is a single-center, retrospective review of consecutive patients undergoing EEA or open craniotomy for resection of a cranial base tumor between July 2007 and June 2014. Patients were included if they underwent an EEA for an intradural skull base lesion. Positive cases were defined by electroencephalograms and clinical findings. Patients who underwent a craniotomy to remove extra-axial skull base tumors were analyzed in the same fashion. Results Of the 577 patients treated with an EEA for intradural tumors, 4 experienced a postoperative seizure (incidence 0.7%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.002–0.02). Over the same period, 481 patients underwent a craniotomy for a skull base lesion of which 27 (5.3%, 95% CI: 0.03–0.08) experienced a seizure after surgery. The odds ratio for EEA was 0.13 (95% CI: 0.05–0.35). Both populations were different in terms of age, gender, tumor histology, and location. Conclusion This study is the largest series looking at seizure incidence after EEA for intracranial lesions. Seizures are a rare occurrence following uncomplicated endonasal approaches. This must be tempered by selection bias, as there are inherent differences in which patients are treated with either approach that influence the likelihood of seizures.

OBJECTIVE Surgical site infections (SSIs) are a major source of morbidity after spinal surgery. Several recent studies have described the finding that applying vancomycin powder to the surgical bed may reduce the incidence of SSI. However, applying vancomycin in high concentrations has been shown in vitro to inhibit osteoblast proliferation and to induce cell death. Vancomycin may have a deleterious effect on dural healing after repair of an intentional or unintentional durotomy. This study was therefore undertaken to assess the effect of different concentrations of vancomycin on a human dura mater cell culture. METHODS Human dura intended for disposal after decompressive craniectomy was harvested. Explant primary cultures and subcultures were subsequently performed. Cells were characterized through common staining and immunohistochemistry. A growth curve was performed to assess the effect of different concentrations of vancomycin (40, 400, and 4000 μg/ml) on cell count. The effect of vancomycin on cellular shape, intercellular arrangement, and viability was also evaluated. RESULTS All dural tissue samples successfully developed into fusiform cells, demonstrating pseudopod projections and spindle formation. The cells demonstrated vimentin positivity and also had typical features of fibroblasts. When applied to the cultures, the highest dose of vancomycin induced generalized cell death within 24 hours. The mean (± SD) cell counts for control, 40, 400, and 4000 μg/ml were 38.72 ± 15.93, 36.28 ± 22.87, 19.48 ± 6.53, and 4.07 ± 9.66, respectively (p < 0.0001, ANOVA). Compared with controls, vancomycin-exposed cells histologically demonstrated a smaller cytoplasm and decreased pseudopodia formation resulting in the inhibition of normal spindle intercellular arrangement. CONCLUSIONS When vancomycin powder is applied locally, dural cells are exposed to a concentration several times greater than when delivered systemically. In this in vitro model, vancomycin induced dural cell death, inhibited growth, and altered cellular morphology in a concentration-dependent fashion. Defining a safe vancomycin concentration that is both bactericidal and also does not inhibit normal dural healing is necessary.

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a known complication after intracranial surgery. Impaired hippocampal neurogenesis has been associated with cognitive dysfunction in animal models. In order to assess hippocampal changes after brain surgery, a frontal lobe corticectomy was performed in ten adult Wistar rats (group 4). Three different control groups (n = 10 each) included no treatment (G1), general anesthesia alone (G2), and craniectomy without dural opening (G3). Twenty-four hours after surgery, half of the animals were killed, and the mRNA levels for IL-6, TNF-α, and brain-derived growth factor (BDNF) in the contralateral hippocampus were assessed by qPCR. Seven days later, the remaining animals underwent anxiety and memory testing. Afterwards, the number of immature neurons in the hippocampal cortex was measured by doublecortin (DCX) staining. Twenty-four hours after surgery, mRNA levels of IL-6 and TNF-α increased and BDNF decreased in both surgical groups G3 and G4 (p = 0.012). Cognitive tests demonstrated an increase in anxiety levels and memory impairment in surgical groups compared with non-surgical animals. These changes correlated with an inhibition of hippocampal neurogenesis evidenced by a decreased number of new neurons (mean ± SD for G1-4: 66.4 ± 24; 57.6 ± 22.2; 21.3 ± 3.78; 5.7 ± 1.05, p

Background The endoscopic endonasal approach for pituitary neoplasms has shown similar efficacy compared with the microscopic approach. However, outcomes and complication rates with larger macroadenomas is not as well documented. This study addresses the efficacy and outcome of the fully endoscopic endonasal approach for large and giant pituitary adenomas. Methods Endoscopic endonasal resection was performed in 39 patients with large (>3 cm) or giant (>4 cm) pituitary macroadenomas. Outcomes were assessed using formal visual examinations, endocrine status, and neurologic examinations. Statistical analyses of multiple variables were addressed for correlation to visual, endocrine, and neurologic outcomes. Results Gross total resection of the pituitary macroadenoma was achieved in 22 of 39 (56.4%) patients based on postoperative magnetic resonance imaging. Higher Knosp grade was associated with near-total resection or subtotal resection ( P = 0.0004). All patients had improved or stable visual symptoms. Time to diagnosis, preoperative visual deficit, and tumor size were not significant predictors of visual outcome. Of patients, 34 (87.1%) had a "good" endocrine outcome, whereas 5 did not. Among the 5 patients who did not have a good outcome, 1 had new hypopituitarism, and 4 required increased dosages of pharmacologic therapy. All patients with recurrent tumors had stable visual and good endocrine outcomes. Postoperative cerebrospinal fluid leak occurred in 4 patients; lumbar drainage resolved the leak in 3, and reoperation was performed in 1 patient. There were no new cranial nerve deficits, new neurologic deficits, or mortality. Conclusions Endoscopic endonasal resection of large and giant pituitary macroadenomas is safe and efficient. Postoperative complications, including cerebrospinal fluid leak, are low. Surgical efficacy of the fully endoscopic endonasal approach for large and giant macroadenomas makes the technique a preferable option in this subset of patients.

Background Minimally invasive accesses to the anterior skull base include the endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) and the supraorbital eyebrow approach. These 2 are often seen as competing approaches, not alternative or combinatory approaches. In this study, we evaluated the anatomic limitations of each approach and the combined approach for accessing the anterior skull base. Methods Ten neurovascular injected cadaver heads were used for the study. The supraorbital approach to the anterior skull base was performed on 5 heads, and EEA was done on the other 5 heads. Then, the supraorbital approach was added to the 5 heads receiving EEA. Visualization and surgical limitations were recorded by the ability to perform resection of the crista galli, anterior clinoid, cribriform plate, and planum sellae. Results The maximal lateral extension of EEA for anterior skull base was the midorbit line anteriorly but narrowing down toward the orbital apex. The limitation of the supraorbital approach was found mostly medial and anterior. Drilling of anterior skull base was impossible medially between the sphenoethmoidal suture and the posterior aspect of the crista galli. The combined approach showed complementary areas of visualization and surgical maneuverability. Three clinical cases were presented to illustrate the indications for the stand-alone supraorbital approach, EEA, and combined approach. Conclusion The limitations of the EEA when dealing with lateral extension of anterior skull base meningiomas, and the limitations of the supraorbital eyebrow approach for medial skull base drilling and reconstruction, can be overcome by a judicious, anatomically based combination of both approaches.

OBJECTIVEThe vascularized nasoseptal flap (NSF) has become the workhorse for skull base reconstruction during endoscopic endonasal surgery (EES) of the ventral skull base. Although infrequently reported, as with any vascularized flap the NSF may undergo ischemic necrosis and become a nidus for infection. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s experience with NSF was reviewed to determine the incidence of necrotic NSF in patients following EES and describe the clinical presentation, imaging characteristics, and risk factors associated with this complication.METHODSThe electronic medical records of 1285 consecutive patients who underwent EES at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center between January 2010 and December 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. From this first group, a list of all patients in whom NSF was used for reconstruction was generated and further refined to determine if the patient returned to the operating room and the cause of this reexploration. Patients were included in the final analysis if they underwent endoscopic reexploration for suspected CSF leak or meningitis. Those patients who returned to the operating room for staged surgery or hematoma were excluded. Two neurosurgeons and a neuroradiologist, who were blinded to each other’s results, assessed the MRI characteristics of the included patients.RESULTSIn total, 601 patients underwent NSF reconstruction during the study period, and 49 patients met the criteria for inclusion in the final analysis. On endoscopic exploration, 8 patients had a necrotic, nonviable NSF, while 41 patients had a viable NSF with a CSF leak. The group of patients with a necrotic, nonviable NSF was then compared with the group with viable NSF. All 8 patients with a necrotic NSF had clinical and laboratory evidence indicative of meningitis compared with 9 of 41 patients with a viable NSF (p < 0.001). Four patients with necrotic flaps developed epidural empyema compared with 2 of 41 patients in the viable NSF group (p = 0.02). The lack of NSF enhancement on MR (p < 0.001), prior surgery (p = 0.043), and the use of a fat graft (p = 0.004) were associated with necrotic NSF.CONCLUSIONSThe signs of meningitis after EES in the absence of a clear CSF leak with the lack of NSF enhancement on MRI should raise the suspicion of necrotic NSF. These patients should undergo prompt exploration and debridement of nonviable tissue with revision of skull base reconstruction.

Intracranial epidermoid cysts are benign lesions of epithelial origin that most frequently present with symptoms of mass effect. Although they are often associated with a high rate of residual tumor and recurrence, maximal safe resection usually leads to good outcomes. The authors report a complete resection of an uncommon pituitary stalk epidermoid cyst with intrasellar extension using a combined suprasellar and infrasellar interpituitary, endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach. The patient, a 54-year-old woman, presented with headache, visual disturbance, and diabetes insipidus. Postoperatively, she reported improvement in her visual symptoms and well-controlled diabetes insipidus using 0.1 mg of desmopressin at bedtime and normal anterior pituitary gland function. One year later, she continues to receive the same dosage of desmopressin and is also taking 50 mcg of levothyroxine daily after developing primary hypothyroidism unrelated to the surgical procedure. A combined infrasellar interpituitary and suprasellar approach to this rare location for an epidermoid cyst can lead to a safe and complete resection with good clinical outcomes.

BACKGROUND Purely ventral foramen magnum meningiomas are challenging tumors to treat given their location, and proximity and relationship to vital neurovascular structures. OBJECTIVE To present endoscopic endonasal surgery (EES) as a complementary approach to the far-lateral suboccipital approach (FLA) for ventral midline tumors. METHODS From May 2008 to October 2013, 5 patients underwent EES and 5 FLA for primary ventral foramen magnum meningiomas. We retrospectively reviewed their records to evaluate outcomes. RESULTS Nine of 10 patients presented with long-tract and lower cranial nerve deficits. All patients who presented with deficits preoperatively completely normalized after tumor resection regardless of approach. Gross total resection was achieved in 2 cases in the EES group and 4 cases in the FLA group (the rest were near total). Vascular encasement was a limitation to gross total resection with both approaches. Preoperative median Karnofsky Performance Scale score was 80 and improved to 100 in both groups. Following EES, 1 patient developed cerebrospinal fluid leak with resultant meningitis. Two patients developed hydrocephalus, one of which developed an epidural abscess following necrosis of the nasoseptal flap, requiring debridement. In the FLA group, 1 patient developed a pseudomeningocele associated with hydrocephalus. One patient developed an abdominal fat graft site hematoma. CONCLUSION Both approaches provide excellent results for resection of ventral foramen magnum meningiomas, with reconstruction and hydrocephalus as the main sources of complication. In our practice, EES is a preferred technique in ventral, purely midline tumors with limited inferior extension and reduced lower cranial nerve manipulation, whereas FLA is preferred in tumors with lateral and caudal extension below the tip of the dens.

A method is described to empower students to efficiently perform general and specific literature searches using online resources. The method was tested on undergraduate and graduate students with varying backgrounds in scientific literature. Students involved in this study showed marked improvement in their awareness of how and where to find accurate scientific information.

The Canadian Light Source, the University of Western Ontario, IBM Canada and BigBangwidth during 2006 developed the Remote Beamline Access (RBA) system. This system was demonstrated using a standalone soft X-ray machine as well on the VESPERS beamline. The RBA system serves as a proof of concept and basis for ScienceStudio, which is now under development.

Nine ruminally cannulated mixed-breed steers were used in a split-plot design to evaluate effects of fat supplementation and forage maturity on intake, digestibility, and ruminal fermentation. Treatment was the main plot, and stage of forage maturity was the subplot. Treatments were supplements containing mineral pack (M) offered at 114 g/d; M plus fiber as soybean hulls-wheat middlings (MF) offered at 0.50% BW; and MF plus tallow (MFT) offered at 0.625% BW. Stages of wheat maturity were mid-March (MAR) and early April (APR). Steers grazed in a single wheat pasture with supplements offered individually at 0700 h daily. There were supplement type x forage maturity interactions (P 0.05) by supplementation. During APR, forage OM, CP, and NDF intakes differed (MF = M > MFT, P MFT, P M > MFT, P MF > MFT, P APR, P 0.05) by supplement or forage maturity. Supplementation increased (P < 0.05) ruminal propionate concentration (19.7, 21.4, and 25.1 +/- 0.49 mol/100 mol for M, MF, and MFT, respectively). Tallow can be used in supplements for cattle grazing wheat pasture to increase energy intake without negatively affecting forage intake or ruminal fermentation, particularly if used in the early stage of wheat maturity.

Background Classically used for treatment of orbital lesions, the lateral orbitotomy with cantholysis can be combined with a temporal craniectomy for lesions involving the middle cranial fossa. Objective To present a single-center experience with the lateral orbitotomy approach for lesions involving the middle fossa. Metuods Twenty-five patients underwent lateral orbitotomies from April 2012 to July 2015. Excluding patients with solely intraorbital pathologies, 13 patients’ clinical and radiographic records were retrospectively reviewed. Results Signs/symptoms in the 13 patients (ages 28-81) included proptosis (69%), decreased visual acuity (31%), diplopia (54%), and afferent pupillary defect (69%). Pathologies were meningioma (8), esthesioneuroblastoma, lymphoma, chordoma, Ewing's sarcoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. Surgical goals were maximal safe resection in 8 patients, palliative debulking in 3 patients, and cavernous sinus biopsy in 2 patients. In 8 patients for whom maximal resection was the goal, 2 had gross total resection, while 6 had near-total resection. All patients (3) for whom palliation was the goal had symptomatic improvement. Both cavernous sinus biopsies obtained diagnostic tissue without complications. All patients with proptosis (n = 9) and diplopia (n = 7), and 2 of 4 patients with decreased visual acuity had improvement in their symptoms. No patient reported worsening of their symptoms. Mean follow-up was 12 mo (2-30 mo). Complications included oculorrhea (1), pseudomeningocele (2), transient ptosis (2), and forehead numbness (1). Conclusion The lateral orbitotomy is a promising approach for carefully selected lesions with involvement of both the lateral orbit and middle cranial fossa. It provides minimally invasive access for biopsy, decompression, or resection.

A mechanistic, prey surface-dependent model was expanded to describe the course and rate of gastric evacuation in predatory fishes feeding on crustacean prey with robust exoskeletons. This was accomplished by adding a layer of higher resistance to the digestive processes outside the inner softer parts of a prey cylinder abstraction and splitting up the prey evacuation into two stages: an initial stage where the exoskeleton is cracked and a second where the prey remains are digested and evacuated. The model was parameterized for crustaceans with different levels of armour fed to Atlantic cod Gadus morhua or whiting Merlangius merlangus and recovered from the stomachs at different post-prandial times. The prey species were krill Meganyctiphanes norvegica; shrimps and prawns Crangon crangon, Pandalus borealis, Pandalus montagui and Eualus macilentus; crabs Liocarcinus depurator and Chionoecetes opilio. In accordance with the apparent intraspecific isometric relationship between exoskeleton mass and total body mass, the model described stage duration and rate of evacuation of the crustacean prey independently of meal and prey sizes. The duration of the first stage increased (0-33 h) and the evacuation rate of both stages decreased (by a half) with increasing level of the crustacean armament in terms of chitin and ash. A common, interspecific parameterization of the model within each of the categories krill, shrimp and crab can probably be used if the contents of chitin and ash are similar among prey species per prey category. The model offers a simple way for estimating evacuation rates from stomach content data in order to obtain food consumption rates of wild fishes, provided that information about digestion stage of crustacean prey is available.

Specific dynamic action (SDA) is the postprandial increase in oxygen uptake. Whereas it is easy to measure in fishes that remain calm and motionless during the entire digestion period, spontaneous locomotor activity is a frequent problem that leads to overestimation of SDA amplitude and magnitude (area under the curve, bound by the standard metabolic rate, SMR). Few studies have attempted to remove the effect of fish activity on SDA. A new method, non-parametric quantile regression, is described to estimate SDA even when pronounced circadian activity cycles are present. Data from juvenile Atlantic cod Gadus morhua are used to demonstrate its use and advantages compared with traditional techniques. Software (scripts in the R language) is provided to facilitate its use.

In this paper, we report on the design, fabrication, and implementation of ultrasensitive micromechanical oscillators. Our ultrathin single-crystal silicon cantilevers with integrated magnetic structures are the first of their kind: They are fabricated using a novel high-yield process in which magnetic film patterning and deposition are combined with cantilever fabrication. These novel devices have been developed for use as cantilever magnetometers and as force sensors in nuclear magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM). These two applications have achieved nanometer-scale resolution using the cantilevers described in this work. Current magnetic moment sensitivity achieved for the devices, when used as magnetometers, is 10/sup -15/ J/T at room temperature, which is more than a 1000-fold improvement in sensitivity, compared to conventional magnetometers. Current room temperature force sensitivity of MRFM cantilevers is /spl sim/10/sup -16/ N//spl radic/Hz, which is comparable to the room temperature sensitivities of similar devices of its type. Finite element modeling was used to improve design parameters, ensure that the devices meet experimental demands, and correlate mode shape with observed results. The photolithographic fabrication process was optimized, yielding an average of /spl sim/85% and alignment better than 1 /spl mu/m. Postfabrication-focused ion-beam milling was used to further pattern the integrated magnetic structures when nanometer scale dimensions were required.

The problem of understanding the effect of the environment on fish activities and performance, in any generalized way, remains intractable. Solving this issue is, however, a key to addressing contemporary environmental concerns. As suggested 20 years ago by W. H. Neill, the authors returned to the drawing board, using as a background the conceptual scheme initially proposed by F. E. J. Fry. They revisited the effect of ambient oxygen availability upon fish metabolism and clarified the definitions of limiting, critical and incipient lethal oxygen (ILO) levels. The concepts of oxy-conformer and oxy-regulator are revisited, and P. W. Hochachka's idea of scope for survival is explored. Finally, how the cardiovascular system contributes to the capacity of fishes to respond to the reduced oxygen availability is considered. Various hands-on recommendations and software (R scripts) are provided for researchers interested in investigating these concepts.

This review and data analysis outline how fish biologists should most reliably estimate the minimal amount of oxygen needed by a fish to support its aerobic metabolic rate (termed standard metabolic rate; SMR). By reviewing key literature, it explains the theory, terminology and challenges underlying SMR measurements in fishes, which are almost always made using respirometry (which measures oxygen uptake, ṀO2 ). Then, the practical difficulties of measuring SMR when activity of the fish is not quantitatively evaluated are comprehensively explored using 85 examples of ṀO2 data from different fishes and one crustacean, an analysis that goes well beyond any previous attempt. The main objective was to compare eight methods to estimate SMR. The methods were: average of the lowest 10 values (low10) and average of the 10% lowest ṀO2 values, after removing the five lowest ones as outliers (low10%), mean of the lowest normal distribution (MLND) and quantiles that assign from 10 to 30% of the data below SMR (q0·1 , q0·15 , q0·2 , q0·25 and q0·3 ). The eight methods yielded significantly different SMR estimates, as expected. While the differences were small when the variability was low amongst the ṀO2 values, they were important (20%) for several cases. The degree of agreement between the methods was related to the c.v. of the observations that were classified into the lowest normal distribution, the c.v. MLND (C.V.MLND ). When this indicator was low (≤5·4), it was advantageous to use the MLND, otherwise, one of the q0·2 or q0·25 should be used. The second objective was to assess if the data recorded during the initial recovery period in the respirometer should be included or excluded, and the recommendation is to exclude them. The final objective was to determine the minimal duration of experiments aiming to estimate SMR. The results show that 12 h is insufficient but 24 h is adequate. A list of basic recommendations for practitioners who use respirometry to measure SMR in fishes is provided.

We report the results of heat capacity, SQUID magnetometry, and x-ray diffraction studies of polycrystalline and magnetically aligned Ca 2+xY 2-xCu 5O (10), a quasi-1D compound. As holes are doped into the chains from x = 0-2, the data indicate a change from 3D long-range order to 1D chain behavior to cluster behavior. We quantitatively model the magnetic and thermal properties of heavily doped Ca 4Cu 5O (10) in terms of spin clusters. Anisotropic susceptibility data indicate a doping-independent easy axis of magnetization perpendicular to the planes containing the chains; also, a spin-flop transition is observed, providing a measure of the anisotropy field.

Microcantilever torque magnetometry is used to measure quantitative M-H curves on patterned Ni80Fe20 films. The dynamic deflection method is employed, in which a small film is deposited onto a microcantilever and placed in an external magnetic field. A small orthogonal ac torque field is applied at the cantilever's resonant frequency, and the resulting torque is measured as a function of external field. Film patterning and deposition have been integrated with cantilever fabrication. Results are presented for a 5 μm×5 μm×30 μm Ni–Fe film. The measured saturated magnetic moment of the sample is 5.1±0.2×10−13 A m2 for a 100 A/m torque field. The M-H curves for the smaller films show hysteretic switching consistent with a series of stable multi-domain states. Values of the saturation magnetization are within 3% of the value measured on similar samples by ferromagnetic resonance, indicating this is a sensitive method for measuring magnetic reversal in small ferromagnetic samples.

Standard metabolic rate (SMR) or the totality of energy-consuming, manipulative, and storage chemical reactions undertaken by fish to maintain life is the topic of this article. The factors that account for SMR and measurement theory are considered. Despite decades of effort, there is no universal method for measuring SMR, and various methods and general problems with measuring are discussed. One of the most important factors contributing to differences in SMR is body size. Despite considerable effort, there is still uncertainty on how metabolism scales in fish. Other factors that contribute to SMR include species, population origin, genetics, and season.

Nine ruminally cannulated mixed-breed steers were used in a split-plot design to evaluate effects of fat supplementation and forage maturity on intake, digestibility, and ruminal fermentation. Treatment was the main plot, and stage of forage maturity was the subplot. Treatments were supplements containing mineral pack (M) offered at 114 g/d; M plus fiber as soybean hulls-wheat middlings (MF) offered at 0.50% BW; and MF plus tallow (MFT) offered at 0.625% BW. Stages of wheat maturity were mid-March (MAR) and early April (APR). Steers grazed in a single wheat pasture with supplements offered individually at 0700 h daily. There were supplement type x forage maturity interactions (P0.05) for forage OM, CP, and NDF intakes. During MAR, forage OM, CP, and NDF intakes were not affected (P0.05) by supplementation. During APR, forage OM, CP, and NDF intakes differed (MF = MMFT, P0.05). There was also supplement type x forage maturity interaction (P = 0.04) for forage OM digestibility. The OM digestibility differed during MAR (M = MFMFT, P0.05) and during APR (MFMMFT, P0.05). Crude protein digestibility was affected by supplement type (MMFMFT, P0.05) and stage of forage maturity (MARAPR, P0.01). Rates of DM and NDF ruminal disappearance were not affected (P0.05) by supplement or forage maturity. Supplementation increased (P0.05) ruminal propionate concentration (19.7, 21.4, and 25.1 +/- 0.49 mol/100 mol for M, MF, and MFT, respectively). Tallow can be used in supplements for cattle grazing wheat pasture to increase energy intake without negatively affecting forage intake or ruminal fermentation, particularly if used in the early stage of wheat maturity.

The Lucid data acquisition and analysis system, developed by the experimental subatomic physics group at the University of Saskatchewan, has undergone several recent upgrades. Currently, Lucid is used in conjunction with the blowfish neutron detector at the high intensity gamma source facility at Duke University, North Carolina. Changes to the acquisition system were partially motivated by upgrades to blowfish and to the Duke facility itself, which will result in an increase of available gamma ray flux. This increased flux translates directly to an increase in the event rate as seen by the acquisition system. The scope of the system upgrades include changes to the type of digitization modules, acquisition control computer, and real time operating system. The new system's dead time and the underlying processes comprising the dead time were measured and are presented here

We report our advances in nuclear magnetic resonance force microscopy (NMRFM) in three areas: 1) MEMS microfabrication studies of single-crystal-silicon mechanical oscillators using double-sided processing; 2) micromagnetometry, anisotropy, and dissipation studies of individual permalloy micromagnets on oscillators; and 3) mechanical-oscillator detection of NMR in the magnet-on-oscillator scanning mode. In the first area, we report details of our back-etch microfabrication process, and characterize oscillator resonant frequency, quality factor, and spring constant by measuring the noise spectral density of oscillator motion. In the second studies, we report changes in the resonant frequency and quality factor for each of four modes of our oscillators for two shapes and sizes of permalloy thin-film (~30 and 180~nm) micromagnets; a simple, quantitative model is used to describe both low-field softening and high-field stiffening. Finally, we report scanning-mode NMR force detection of an ammonium-sulfate single-crystal interface and a polymethyl-methyl-acrylate thin film at room temperature. These latter studies use 2-μm-radius permalloy magnets on silicon oscillators to image the NMR response from resonant volumes as small as 3 μm3. These NMRFM studies are the first reported that attain sub-micron resonant-slice resolution at room temperature.
