This article presents measurements of electrical and physical properties for a variety of FR4 fiberglass-reinforced resin laminates, and the respective changes following exposure to a $1.9 \times 10^{16}$ n/cm2 total neutron fluence. The selection of a printed circuit board (PCB) substrate is shown to be of consideration beyond the typical frequency-dependent parameters, specifically for high fluence radiation environments where small changes to the dielectric constant are of concern.

A group $G$ is integrable if it is isomorphic to the derived subgroup of a group $H$; that is, if $H'\simeq G$, and in this case $H$ is an integral of $G$. If $G$ is a subgroup of $U$, we say that $G$ is integrable within $U$ if $G=H'$ for some $H\leq U$. In this work we focus on two problems posed in [1]. We classify the almost-simple finite groups $G$ that are integrable, which we show to be equivalent to those integrable within $\mathrm{Aut}(S)$, where $S$ is the socle of $G$. The ratio of the nucleon F_{2} structure functions, F_{2}^{n}/F_{2}^{p}, is determined by the MARATHON experiment from measurements of deep inelastic scattering of electrons from ^{3}H and ^{3}He nuclei. The experiment was performed in the Hall A Facility of Jefferson Lab using two high-resolution spectrometers for electron detection, and a cryogenic target system which included a low-activity tritium cell. The data analysis used a novel technique exploiting the mirror symmetry of the two nuclei, which essentially eliminates many theoretical uncertainties in the extraction of the ratio. The results, which cover the Bjorken scaling variable range 0.19x0.83, represent a significant improvement compared to previous SLAC and Jefferson Lab measurements for the ratio. They are compared to recent theoretical calculations and empirical determinations of the F_{2}^{n}/F_{2}^{p} ratio.

The murine interleukin-4 treated macrophage (MIL4) exerts anti-inflammatory and pro-healing effects and has been shown to reduce the severity of chemical-induced colitis. Positing M(IL4) transfer as an anti-inflammatory therapy, the possibility of side-effects must be considered. Consequently, bone marrow-derived M(IL4)s were administered via intraperitoneal injection to mice concomitant with Citrobacter rodentium infection (infections colitis), azoxymethane/dextran sodium sulphate (AOM/DSS) treatment [a model of colorectal cancer (CRC)], or ovalbumin sensitization (airway inflammation). The impact of M(IL4) treatment on C. rodentium infectivity, colon histopathology, tumor number and size and tissue-specific inflammation was examined in these models. The anti-colitic effect of the M(IL4)s were confirmed in the di-nitrobenzene sulphonic acid model of colitis and the lumen-to-blood movement of 4kDa FITC-dextran and bacterial translocation to the spleen and liver was also improved by M(IL4) treatment. Analysis of the other models of disease, that represent comorbidities that can occur in human inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), revealed that M(IL4) treatment did not exaggerate the severity of any of the conditions. Rather, there was reduction in the size (but not number) of polyps in the colon of AOM/DSS-mice and reduced infectivity and inflammation in C. rodentium-infected mice in M(IL4)-treated mice. Thus, while any new therapy can have unforeseen side effects, our data confirm and extend the anti-colitic capacity of murine M(IL4)s and indicate that systemic delivery of one million M(IL4)s did not exaggerate disease in models of colonic or airways inflammation or colonic tumorigenesis.

The intestinal mucosa contributes to frontline gut defenses by forming a barrier (physical and biochemical) and preventing the entry of pathogenic microbes. One innate role of the human colonic epithelium is to secrete cathelicidin, a peptide with broad antimicrobial and immunomodulatory functions. In this study, the effect of cathelicidin in the maintenance of epithelial integrity, Toll-like receptor recognition, bacterial invasion and initiation of inflammatory response against Salmonella typhimurium is investigated in cultured human colonic epithelium. We found exogenous human cathelicidin restores the epithelial integrity in S. typhimurium-infected colonic epithelial (T84) cells by mostly post-translational effects associated with reorganization of zonula occludens (ZO)-1 tight junction proteins. Endogenous cathelicidin prevents S. typhimurium internalization as shown in colonic epithelial cells genetically deficient in the only human cathelicidin, LL-37 (shLL-37). Moreover, supplementation of shLL-37 cells with synthetic LL-37 reduces the grade of S. typhimurium internalization in a dose-dependent manner. Mechanistically, shLL-37 cells have lower gene expression of TLR4 and pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1β in response to S. typhimurium. Thus, human cathelicidin aids in the early colonic epithelial defenses against enteric S. typhimurium by preventing bacterial invasion and maintaining epithelial barrier integrity, likely to occur due to the production of sensing TLR4 and pro-inflammatory cytokines.

We hypothesized that the antimicrobial peptide cathelicidin has a physiological role in regulating gut inflammatory homeostasis. We determined that cathelicidin synergizes with LPS to facilitate its internalization and signaling via endosomic TLR4 in colonic epithelium, evoking synthesis of the human neutrophil chemoattractant, CXCL8 (or murine homolog, CXCL1). Interaction of cathelicidin with LPS in the control of CXCL8/CXCL1 synthesis was assessed in human colon epithelial cells, murine colonoids and cathelicidin-null mice (Camp−/-). Mechanistically, human cathelicidin (LL-37), as an extracellular complex with LPS, interacted with lipid raft-associated GM1 gangliosides to internalize and activate intracellular TLR4. Two signaling pathways converged on CXCL8/CXCL1 production: (1) a p38MAPK-dependent pathway regulated by Src-EGFR kinases; and, (2) a p38MAPK-independent, NF-κB-dependent pathway, regulated by MEK1/2-MAPK. Increased cathelicidin-dependent CXCL8 secretion in the colonic mucosa activated human blood-derived neutrophils. These cathelicidin effects occurred in vitro at concentrations well below those needed for microbicidal function. The important immunomodulatory role of cathelicidins was evident in cathelicidin-null/Camp−/- mice, which had diminished colonic CXCL1 secretion, decreased neutrophil recruitment-activation and reduced bacterial clearance when challenged with the colitis-inducing murine pathogen, Citrobacter rodentium. We conclude that in addition to its known microbicidal action, cathelicidin has a unique pathogen-sensing role, facilitating LPS-mediated intestinal responses, including the production of CXCL8/CXCL1 that would contribute to an integrated tissue response to recruit neutrophils during colitis.

We report the first measurement of the (e,e^{'}p) three-body breakup reaction cross sections in helium-3 (^{3}He) and tritium (^{3}H) at large momentum transfer [⟨Q^{2}⟩≈1.9 (GeV/c)^{2}] and x_{B}>1 kinematics, where the cross section should be sensitive to quasielastic (QE) scattering from single nucleons. The data cover missing momenta 40≤p_{miss}≤500 MeV/c that, in the QE limit with no rescattering, equals the initial momentum of the probed nucleon. The measured cross sections are compared with state-of-the-art ab initio calculations. Overall good agreement, within ±20%, is observed between data and calculations for the full p_{miss} range for ^{3}H and for 100≤p_{miss}≤350 MeV/c for ^{3}He. Including the effects of rescattering of the outgoing nucleon improves agreement with the data at p_{miss}>250 MeV/c and suggests contributions from charge-exchange (SCX) rescattering. The isoscalar sum of ^{3}He plus ^{3}H, which is largely insensitive to SCX, is described by calculations to within the accuracy of the data over the entire p_{miss} range. This validates current models of the ground state of the three-nucleon system up to very high initial nucleon momenta of 500 MeV/c.

Barramundi (Lates calcarifer) are a highly valued aquaculture species, and, as obligate carnivores, they have a demonstrated preference for dietary protein over lipid or starch to fuel energetic growth demands. In order to investigate how carnivorous fish regulate nutritional cues, we examined the metabolic effects of feeding two isoenergetic diets that contained different proportions of digestible protein or starch energy. Fish fed a high proportion of dietary starch energy had a higher proportion of liver SFA, but showed no change in plasma glucose levels, and few changes in the expression of genes regulating key hepatic metabolic pathways. Decreased activation of the mammalian target of rapamycin growth signalling cascade was consistent with decreased growth performance values. The fractional synthetic rate (lipogenesis), measured by TAG 2H-enrichment using 2H NMR, was significantly higher in barramundi fed with the starch diet compared with the protein diet (0·6 (se 0·1) v. 0·4 (se 0·1) % per d, respectively). Hepatic TAG-bound glycerol synthetic rates were much higher than other closely related fish such as sea bass, but were not significantly different (starch, 2·8 (se 0·3) v. protein, 3·4 (se 0·3) % per d), highlighting the role of glycerol as a metabolic intermediary and high TAG-FA cycling in barramundi. Overall, dietary starch significantly increased hepatic TAG through increased lipogenesis. Compared with other fish, barramundi possess a unique mechanism to metabolise dietary carbohydrates and this knowledge may define ways to improve performance of advanced formulated feeds.

Micromegas detectors are a relatively modern design concept for micropattern gas detectors, designed to handle high particle flux while providing high gain, high spatial resolution, and fast response times for a variety of radiation detection applications. Due to the advancement of industry, building a micromegas detector without advanced in-house capabilities is now possible. In this work, we present an innovative method to build micromegas detectors utilizing precision manufacturers to fabricate the core components. Two detectors were built using the newly described method and are experimentally validated., 11 pages, 8 figures

Given a finite nonabelian semisimple group G, we describe those groups that have the same holomorph as G, that is, those regular subgroups N ≃ G {N\simeq G} of S ⁢ ( G ) {S(G)} , the group of permutations on the set G, such that N S ⁢ ( G ) ⁢ ( N ) = N S ⁢ ( G ) ⁢ ( ρ ⁢ ( G ) ) {N_{S(G)}(N)=N_{S(G)}(\rho(G))} , where ρ is the right regular representation of G.

The concept of Gaussian process tomography along with nonnegative constraints is applied in the context of high-resolution image reconstruction using segmented planar detectors with few readout channels.Expanding on the concept of 2-D projections onto strip-like readout segmentations, 3-D projections as well as more generalized detector segmentation and readout channel mappings are explored. A focus is placed on reconstructing dose distributions in proton therapy pencil beam scanning, and a fast, approximate approach to applying nonnegative constraints is developed and motivated for use in proton therapy beam imaging.

We report the first measurement of the $(e,e'p)$ reaction cross-section ratios for Helium-3 ($^3$He), Tritium ($^3$H), and Deuterium ($d$). The measurement covered a missing momentum range of $40 \le p_{miss} \le 550$ MeV$/c$, at large momentum transfer ($\langle Q^2 \rangle \approx 1.9$ (GeV$/c$)$^2$) and $x_B>1$, which minimized contributions from non quasi-elastic (QE) reaction mechanisms. The data is compared with plane-wave impulse approximation (PWIA) calculations using realistic spectral functions and momentum distributions. The measured and PWIA-calculated cross-section ratios for $^3$He$/d$ and $^3$H$/d$ extend to just above the typical nucleon Fermi-momentum ($k_F \approx 250$ MeV$/c$) and differ from each other by $\sim 20\%$, while for $^3$He/$^3$H they agree within the measurement accuracy of about 3\%. At momenta above $k_F$, the measured $^3$He/$^3$H ratios differ from the calculation by $20\% - 50\%$. Final state interaction (FSI) calculations using the generalized Eikonal Approximation indicate that FSI should change the $^3$He/$^3$H cross-section ratio for this measurement by less than 5\%. If these calculations are correct, then the differences at large missing momenta between the $^3$He/$^3$H experimental and calculated ratios could be due to the underlying $NN$ interaction, and thus could provide new constraints on the previously loosely-constrained short-distance parts of the $NN$ interaction., 8 pages, 3 figures (4 panels)

ProIO is a new event-oriented streaming data format which utilizes Google’s Protocol Buffers (protobuf) to be flexible and highly language-neutral. The ProIO concept is described here along with its software implementations. The performance of the ProIO concept for a dataset with Monte-Carlo event records used in high-energy physics was benchmarked and compared/contrasted with ROOT I/O. Various combinations of general-purpose compression and variable-length integer encoding available in protobuf were used to investigate the relationship between I/O performance and size-on-disk in a few key scenarios. However, protobufs are not well-suited for describing large, rich datasets. Additionally, features such as direct event access, lazy event decoding, general-purpose compression, and self-description are features that are important to HEP and NP, but that are missing from protobuf. Solution method: The solution adopted here is to describe and implement a streaming format for wrapping protobufs in an event structure. This solution requires small (typically less than 1000 lines of code) implementations of the format in the desired programming languages. With this approach, most of the I/O heavy lifting is done by the protobufs, and ProIO adds the necessary physics-oriented features.

The NPDGamma experiment measures the parity-violating asymmetry in $\gamma$-ray emission in the capture of polarized neutrons on liquid parahydrogen. The sensitivity to the asymmetry for each detector in the array is used as a parameter in the extraction of the physics asymmetry from the measured data. The detector array is approximately cylindrically symmetric around the target and a step-wise sinusoidal function has been used for the sensitivity in the previous iteration of the NPDGamma experiment, but deviations from cylindrical symmetry necessitate the use of a Monte Carlo model to determine corrections to the geometrical factors. For the calculations, source code modifications to MCNPX were done in order to calculate the sensitivity of each cesium iodide detector to the physics asymmetry. We describe the MCNPX model and results from calculations and how the results are validated through measurement of the parity violating asymmetry of $\gamma$-rays from neutron capture on chlorine., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

A_{γ}^{np} isolates the ΔI=1, ^{3}S_{1}→^{3}P_{1} component of the weak nucleon-nucleon interaction, which is dominated by pion exchange and can be directly related to a single coupling constant in either the DDH meson exchange model or pionless effective field theory. We measured A_{γ}^{np}=[-3.0±1.4(stat)±0.2(syst)]×10^{-8}, which implies a DDH weak πNN coupling of h_{π}^{1}=[2.6±1.2(stat)±0.2(syst)]×10^{-7} and a pionless EFT constant of C^{^{3}S_{1}→^{3}P_{1}}/C_{0}=[-7.4±3.5(stat)±0.5(syst)]×10^{-11} MeV^{-1}. We describe the experiment, data analysis, systematic uncertainties, and implications of the result.

Accurately measuring the neutron beam polarization of a high flux, large area neutron beam is necessary for many neutron physics experiments. The Fundamental Neutron Physics Beamline (FnPB) at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) is a pulsed neutron beam that was polarized with a supermirror polarizer for the NPDGamma experiment. The polarized neutron beam had a flux of $\sim10^9$ neutrons per second per cm$^2$ and a cross sectional area of 10$\times$12~cm$^2$. The polarization of this neutron beam and the efficiency of a RF neutron spin rotator installed downstream on this beam were measured by neutron transmission through a polarized $^{3}$He neutron spin-filter. The pulsed nature of the SNS enabled us to employ an absolute measurement technique for both quantities which does not depend on accurate knowledge of the phase space of the neutron beam or the $^{3}$He polarization in the spin filter and is therefore of interest for any experiments on slow neutron beams from pulsed neutron sources which require knowledge of the absolute value of the neutron polarization. The polarization and spin-reversal efficiency measured in this work were done for the NPDGamma experiment, which measures the parity violating $\gamma$-ray angular distribution asymmetry with respect to the neutron spin direction in the capture of polarized neutrons on protons. Interferon-inducible transmembrane proteins (IFITMs) can restrict the entry of a wide range of viruses. IFITM3 localizes to endosomes and can potently restrict the replication of influenza A viruses (IAV) and several other viruses that also enter host cells through the endocytic pathway. Here, we investigate whether IFITMs are involved in protection in ducks, the natural host of influenza virus. We identify and sequence duck IFITM1 , IFITM2 , IFITM3 , and IFITM5 . Using quantitative PCR (qPCR), we demonstrate the upregulation of these genes in lung tissue in response to highly pathogenic IAV infection by 400-fold, 30-fold, 30-fold, and 5-fold, respectively. We express each IFITM in chicken DF-1 cells and show duck IFITM1 localizes to the cell surface, while IFITM3 localizes to LAMP1-containing compartments. DF-1 cells stably expressing duck IFITM3 (but not IFITM1 or IFITM2) show increased restriction of replication of H1N1, H6N2, and H11N9 IAV strains but not vesicular stomatitis virus. Although duck and human IFITM3 share only 38% identity, critical residues for viral restriction are conserved. We generate chimeric and mutant IFITM3 proteins and show duck IFITM3 does not require its N-terminal domain for endosomal localization or antiviral function; however, this N-terminal end confers endosomal localization and antiviral function on IFITM1. In contrast to mammalian IFITM3, the conserved YXXθ endocytosis signal sequence in the N-terminal domain of duck IFITM3 is not essential for correct endosomal localization. Despite significant structural and amino acid divergence, presumably due to host-virus coevolution, duck IFITM3 is functional against IAV. IMPORTANCE Immune IFITM genes are poorly conserved across species, suggesting that selective pressure from host-specific viruses has driven this divergence. We wondered whether coevolution between viruses and their natural host would result in the evasion of IFITM restriction. Ducks are the natural host of avian influenza A viruses and display few or no disease symptoms upon infection with most strains, including highly pathogenic avian influenza. We have characterized the duck IFITM locus and identified IFITM3 as an important restrictor of several influenza A viruses, including avian strains. With only 38% amino acid identity to human IFITM3, duck IFITM3 possesses antiviral function against influenza virus. Thus, despite long coevolution of virus and host effectors in the natural host, influenza virus evasion of IFITM3 restriction in ducks is not apparent.

The author has taught an inquiry-based liberal arts mathematics class using the text “The Heart of Mathematics: An Invitation to Effective Thinking” by Edward B. Burger and Michael Starbird a total of 20 times since Spring 2001. The students in this class have almost all been in non-technical majors and many started the semester with negative or ambivalent attitudes toward mathematics based on their prior experiences. The author has gathered responses from students in this class that illustrate significant changes in their attitudes towards mathematics during the course. In particular, the responses gathered at the end of the semester are often eloquent about understanding the great ideas of mathematics that students confronted in this course and about seeing many more and varied connections between mathematics and the “real world” than they had previously realized existed.

Highlights • Avian genomes contain a smaller immune repertoire. • TLR8, RIG-I and downstream components are missing in chickens. • Birds are missing IgD, and ducks make a truncated IgY. • Chicken leukocyte Ig-like receptors are missing in ducks. • Birds have a minimal MHC that affects function., Birds have a smaller repertoire of immune genes than mammals. In our efforts to study antiviral responses to influenza in avian hosts, we have noted key genes that appear to be missing. As a result, we speculate that birds have impaired detection of viruses and intracellular pathogens. Birds are missing TLR8, a detector for single-stranded RNA. Chickens also lack RIG-I, the intracellular detector for single-stranded viral RNA. Riplet, an activator for RIG-I, is also missing in chickens. IRF3, the nuclear activator of interferon-beta in the RIG-I pathway is missing in birds. Downstream of interferon (IFN) signaling, some of the antiviral effectors are missing, including ISG15, and ISG54 and ISG56 (IFITs). Birds have only three antibody isotypes and IgD is missing. Ducks, but not chickens, make an unusual truncated IgY antibody that is missing the Fc fragment. Chickens have an expanded family of LILR leukocyte receptor genes, called CHIR genes, with hundreds of members, including several that encode IgY Fc receptors. Intriguingly, LILR homologues appear to be missing in ducks, including these IgY Fc receptors. The truncated IgY in ducks, and the duplicated IgY receptor genes in chickens may both have resulted from selective pressure by a pathogen on IgY FcR interactions. Birds have a minimal MHC, and the TAP transport and presentation of peptides on MHC class I is constrained, limiting function. Perhaps removing some constraint, ducks appear to lack tapasin, a chaperone involved in loading peptides on MHC class I. Finally, the absence of lymphotoxin-alpha and beta may account for the observed lack of lymph nodes in birds. As illustrated by these examples, the picture that emerges is some impairment of immune response to viruses in birds, either a cause or consequence of the host-pathogen arms race and long evolutionary relationship of birds and RNA viruses.

The NPDGamma experiment measures the parity-violating (PV) gamma asymmetry from polarized cold neutrons captured on protons at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The (PV) neutron spin asymmetry A γ of photons from polarized cold neutron capture on protons is proportional to the ΔI=1 long range weak meson coupling $h_{\pi }^{1}$ between nucleons in the hadronic weak interaction (HWI). Liquid para-hydrogen production data taking concluded in April 2014 and once the background aluminum asymmetry measurements are complete, the PV asymmetry A γ can be extracted. Preliminary results of the analysis of A γ are presented.

Background Cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease typically occurs during the first year after solid organ transplantation, after cessation of antiviral prophylaxis. CMV occurring after the first year is uncommon and not well described. Methods We conducted a case–control study to identify potential risk factors and a retrospective cohort study to evaluate 1-month mortality in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients who developed CMV disease after the first year post transplant, or “very late CMV” (VLCMV), compared with those developing CMV within the first year (CMV Y1), adjusting for demographics, donor and recipient CMV serostatus, immunosuppression, rejection, and co-morbidities. Results We identified 85 SOT recipients with CMV disease at a single transplant center between January 2006 and October 2008: 23 (27%) had VLCMV and 62 (73%) had CMV Y1. Heart transplantation was independently associated with increased risk (adjusted odd ratio [OR] 4.11; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.34–12.61; P = 0.01) for VLCMV. Patients with VLCMV had increased 1-month mortality (unadjusted OR 5.39; 95% CI 1.06–27.48; P = 0.02). Mortality was uncommonly attributable to CMV. Conclusions CMV disease continues to occur after the first year post solid organ transplantation, particularly in heart transplant recipients, and can be associated with poor outcomes. CMV should be suspected in patients with symptoms or laboratory findings consistent with CMV, even if the patients present >1 year post transplant.

We describe a method by which students in an abstract algebra course can discover classical theorems before they are stated and proved, with the help of leading questions and the software Groups, Algorithms and Programming (GAP) [1].

In this paper we develop a theory for computing the nonabelian tensor square and related computations for finitely presented groups and specialize it to polycyclic groups. This theory provides a framework for making nonabelian tensor square computations for polycyclic groups and is the basis of an algorithm for computing the nonabelian tensor square for any polycyclic group.

Liquid hydrogen is a dense Bose fluid whose equilibrium properties are both calculable from first principles using various theoretical approaches and of interest for the understanding of a wide range of questions in many body physics. Unfortunately, the pair correlation function $g(r)$ inferred from neutron scattering measurements of the differential cross section $d\sigma \over d\Omega$ from different measurements reported in the literature are inconsistent. We have measured the energy dependence of the total cross section and the scattering cross section for slow neutrons with energies between 0.43~meV and 16.1~meV on liquid hydrogen at 15.6~K (which is dominated by the parahydrogen component) using neutron transmission measurements on the hydrogen target of the NPDGamma collaboration at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The relationship between the neutron transmission measurement we perform and the total cross section is unambiguous, and the energy range accesses length scales where the pair correlation function is rapidly varying. At 1~meV our measurement is a factor of 3 below the data from previous work. We present evidence that these previous measurements of the hydrogen cross section, which assumed that the equilibrium value for the ratio of orthohydrogen and parahydrogen has been reached in the target liquid, were in fact contaminated with an extra non-equilibrium component of orthohydrogen. Liquid parahydrogen is also a widely-used neutron moderator medium, and an accurate knowledge of its slow neutron cross section is essential for the design and optimization of intense slow neutron sources. In this paper we compute the non-abelian tensor square for the free 2-Engel group of rank $n>3$. The non-abelian tensor square for this group is a direct product of a free abelian group and a nilpotent group of class 2 whose derived subgroup has exponent 3. We also compute the non-abelian tensor square for one of the group’s finite homomorphic images, namely, the Burnside group of rank $n$ and exponent 3.AMS 2000 Mathematics subject classification: Primary 20F05; 20F45. We discuss some of the progress that has occurred since the survey article ``Nonabelian tensor products of groups: the commutator connection'' by L.C. Kappe appeared in the Proceedings of Groups St Andrews 1997 in Bath, with a particular emphasis on non-abelian tensor squares of groups. We survey methods for computing non-abelian tensor squares, results that support such calculations, and recent general structure results.

A subset {x 1, x 2, ..., x n } of n elements of G is said to be rewritable if there are distinct permutations \( \pi \) and \( \sigma \) of {1, 2, ..., n} such that¶¶\( x_{\pi(1)}x_{\pi(2)} \ldots x_{\pi(n)} = x_{\sigma(1)}x_{\sigma(2)} \ldots x_{\sigma(n)}. \)¶¶A group is said to have the rewriting property Q n if every subset of n elements of the group is rewritable. In this paper we prove that a finite group of odd order has the property Q 3 if and only if its derived subgroup has order not exceeding 5.

The NPDGamma Experiment at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is measuring the parity-odd correlation between the neutron spin and the direction of the emitted photon in the capture of polarized cold neutrons on protons. A parity violating asymmetry from this process is directly related to the strength of the hadronic weak interaction between nucleons. The experiment was run first with heavier nuclear targets to check systematic e ects, false asymmetries, and backgrounds. Since early 2012 the experiment has been collecting data with a 16-liter liquid parahydrogen target. Data taking will continue through 2013 until statistics for a 10 8 asymmetry mea- surement are expected. The experiment performance will be discussed as well as the status of the asymmetry measurements.

A covering of a group is a finite set of proper subgroups whose union is the whole group. A covering is minimal if there is no covering of smaller cardinality, and it is nilpotent if all its members are nilpotent subgroups. We complete a proof that every group that has a nilpotent minimal covering is solvable, starting from the previously known result that a minimal counterexample is an almost simple finite group.

The large growth of flash ADC techniques for processing signals, especially in applications of streaming data, raises issues such as data flow through an acquisition system, long-term storage, and greater complexity in data analysis. In addition, experiments that push the limits of sensitivity need to distinguish legitimate signals from noise. The use of correlation coefficients is examined to address these issues. They are found to be quite successful well into the noise region. The methods can also be extended to Field Programmable Gate Array modules for compressing the data flow and greatly enhancing the event rate capabilities., 9 pages, 2 figures

The main result of this paper shows that the only nontrivial semlsimple groups with the property Q5 are the alternating group A5, the symmetric group S5, the projective special linear group PSL(2, 7) and the projective general linear group PGL(2, 7)

Let n be an integer greater than 1, and let G be a group. An n -tuple x 1 , x 2 ,… x n of elements of G is called rewritable if there is a nontrivial permutation π of {1,2…, n } such that x 1 x 2 … x = x π (2)⋯ x π (π) . the group G is said to have the rewriting property P n if every n -tuple of G is rewritable. The authors have previously shown that all groups with P 7 are soluble, whereas the alternating group A 5 has P 8 . Thus the least n for which P n contains a nonabelian simple group is 8. In this article the authors confirm conjectures of R. Brandl concerning the structure of insoluble groups with P 8 . In particular, let G be an insoluble group. Then G has the rewriting property P 8 if and only if it is a semidirect product H ⋉ K where H is abelian. K is isomorphic with the alternating group of degree 5, and | H : C H ( K )| = 1 or 2.

We study the non-abelian tensor square $G\otimes G$ for the class of groups G that are finitely generated modulo their derived subgroup. In particular, we find conditions on G/G' so that $G\otimes G$ is isomorphic to the direct product of $\nabla(G)$ and the non-abelian exterior square $G\wedge G$. For any group G, we characterize the non-abelian exterior square $G\wedge G$ in terms of a presentation of G. Finally, we apply our results to some classes of groups, such as the classes of free soluble and free nilpotent groups of finite rank, and some classes of finite p-groups.

We provide a detailed structure description of the derived subgroups of the free nilpotent groups of finite rank. This description is then applied to computing the nonabelian tensor squares of the free nilpotent groups of finite rank.

Particle detection instrumentation to address the in vivo verifications of proton dose and range is under development as part of a proton therapy research program focused on patient quality assurance. For in vivo proton range verification, a collimated gamma detector array is under construction to indirectly measure the position of the Bragg peak for each proton beam spot to within 1–2 mm precision. For dose flux verification, a proton fluence detector based on the technology of the Micromegas is under construction. This detector has an active area of about 100 cm2, coordinate resolution of better than 1 mm, and handling of incident proton beam fluxes of 109–1013 particles/s.

It is argued that applying formal methods to standards making would result in more accurate, more understandable, and more useful standards. The main benefit seen in using formal methods in a standard's development and expression is improving the standard's quality. In the early stages of standards development, formal methods can result in considerable clarification during the development and expression of the underlying conceptual model for a standard or family of related standards. They can also define precisely the relation among the components of both the standard being developed and other standards. Later in the development process, formal methods can improve a standard's quality during its use by letting it be expressed clearly, unambiguously, and concisely in a way that natural language does not allow. Finally, formal methods can aid standards development at the maintenance stage, for example, by allowing the adequacy of a proposed change to be proved. Guidelines for applying formal methods in the standardization process are provided. >

For the first time, multihadronic production from single tagged gamma gamma collisions has been studied, where one of the scattered leptons was tagged at very low virtual photon absolute mass squared ([Q(2)] = 0.06 (GeV/c(2))(2)). Data collected during 1991 and 1992 in the DELPHI experiment at LEP are shown to agree well with predictions which included the non-perturbative vector meson dominance model in which the interacting photons are assumed to have converted into a vector meson (rho, omega or pi), a quark-parton model which describes direct photon interactions and a QCD-based model which considers the photon to have quark and gluon structure functions. Five different parametrizations of these structure functions were used and the predictions compared with the data. This study confirms recent results from no-tag experiments in requiring a QCD-based component to successfully describe the data, indicating that the photon has a significant partonic content.

The forward-backward asymmetry of the process e+e-→Z→b {Mathematical expression} has been measured using events collected by the DELPHI experiment during the 1991 and 1992 LEP runs. This data sample corresponded to 884 000 hadronic Z decays at a centre-of-mass energy {Mathematical expression}. The tagging of b-quark events was performed using two approaches; the first was based on the semileptonic decay channels b→X+μ and b→X+e, the second used a lifetime tag with jet-charge reconstruction. The results of these two methods were combined to give {Mathematical expression} With the semileptonic sample, the forward-backward asymmetry of the process e+e-→Z→ {Mathematical expression} was also measured to be {Mathematical expression} The effective value of the Weinberg mixing angle derived from these measurements was {Mathematical expression} © 1995 Springer-Verlag.
