1. Effect of Hydraulic Resistivity on a Weakly Nonlinear Thermal Flow in a Porous Layer

Abstract

Heat and mass transfer through porous media has been a topic of research interest because of its importance in various applications. The flow system in porous media is modelled by a set of partial differential equations. The momentum equation which is derived from Darcy’s law contains a resistivity parameter. We investigate the effect of hydraulic resistivity on a weakly nonlinear thermal flow in a horizontal porous layer. The present study is a realistic study of nonlinear convection flow with variable resistivity whose rate of variation is arbitrary in general. This is a first step for considering more general problems in applications that involve variable resistivity that may include both variations in permeability and viscosity of the porous layer. Such problems are important for understanding properties of underground flow, migration of moisture in fibrous insulations, underground disposal of nuclear waste, welding process, petrochemical generation, drug delivery in vascular tumor, etc. Using weakly non-linear procedure, the linear and first-order systems are derived. The critical Rayleigh number and the critical wave number are obtained from the linear system using the normal mode approach for the two-dimensional case. The linear and first-order systems are solved numerically using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta and shooting methods. Numerical results for the temperature are presented in tabular and graphical forms for different resistivities. Through this study, it is observed that a stabilizing effect on the dependent variables occurs in the case of a positive vertical rate of change in resistivity, whereas a destabilizing effect is noticed in the case of a negative vertical rate of change in resistivity. The results obtained indicate that the convective flow due to the buoyancy force is more effective for weaker resistivity.

Abstract

We report a precise measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry $A_{\rm PV}$ in the elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from $^{48}{\rm Ca}$. We measure $A_{\rm PV} =2668\pm 106\ {\rm (stat)}\pm 40\ {\rm (syst)}$ parts per billion, leading to an extraction of the neutral weak form factor $F_{\rm W} (q=0.8733$ fm$^{-1}) = 0.1304 \pm 0.0052 \ {\rm (stat)}\pm 0.0020\ {\rm (syst)}$ and the charge minus the weak form factor $F_{\rm ch} - F_{\rm W} = 0.0277\pm 0.0055$. The resulting neutron skin thickness $R_n-R_p=0.121 \pm 0.026\ {\rm (exp)} \pm 0.024\ {\rm (model)}$~fm is relatively thin yet consistent with many model calculations. Abstract

We report precision determinations of the beam normal single spin asymmetries ($A_n$) in the elastic scattering of 0.95 and 2.18~GeV electrons off $^{12}$C, $^{40}$Ca, $^{48}$Ca, and $^{208}$Pb at very forward angles where the most detailed theoretical calculations have been performed. The first measurements of $A_n$ for $^{40}$Ca and $^{48}$Ca are found to be similar to that of $^{12}$C, consistent with expectations thus demonstrating the validity of theoretical calculations for nuclei with Z~$\leq20$. We also report $A_n$ for $^{208}$Pb at two new momentum transfers (Q$^2$) extending the previous measurement. Our new data confirm the surprising result previously reported, with all three data points showing significant disagreement with the results from the $Z\leq 20$ nuclei. These data confirm our basic understanding of the underlying dynamics that govern $A_n$ for nuclei containing $\lesssim 50$ nucleons, but point to the need for further investigation to understand the unusual $A_n$ behaviour discovered for scattering off $^{208}$Pb., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

We report a precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry $A_{PV}$ in the elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from $^{208}$Pb. We measure $A_{PV}=550\pm 16 {\rm (stat)}\pm 8\ {\rm (syst)}$ parts per billion, leading to an extraction of the neutral weak form factor $F_W(Q^2 = 0.00616\ {\rm GeV}^2) = 0.368 \pm 0.013$. Combined with our previous measurement, the extracted neutron skin thickness is $R_n-R_p=0.283 \pm 0.071$~fm. The result also yields the first significant direct measurement of the interior weak density of $^{208}$Pb: $\rho^0_W = -0.0796\pm0.0036\ {\rm (exp.)}\pm0.0013\ {\rm (theo.)}\ {\rm fm}^{-3}$ leading to the interior baryon density $\rho^0_b = 0.1480\pm0.0036\ {\rm (exp.)}\pm0.0013\ {\rm (theo.)}\ {\rm fm}^{-3}$. The measurement accurately constrains the density dependence of the symmetry energy of nuclear matter near saturation density, with implications for the size and composition of neutron stars.

Abstract

Nepal’s post 1990s political discourse has witnessed many issues and the most important ones, among them, are also related to inclusion and exclusion. Both of them have taken the centre stage for their own reasons. Yet, the debate itself is not going toward the right direction and there is more than one reason for that. A closer look of the discourse on the subject indicates that it certainly has not been much helpful to address problems coming out of it. In contrast, it has not only weakened the social fabric of society but also preparing grounds for the latent conflicts as well. If Nepal’s problems of inclusion and exclusion are to be resolved, there certainly is a need to revisit the debate itself. There are certainly problems in Nepali society as they are in others societies as well. Having said this, however, the crux of the matter is that the narrative that has been established in society over the years and their role in guiding the process is not free problem. Among many other factors, they do not necessarily take societal realities and its foundations into consideration.

Abstract

Introduction Postoperative sore throat (POST) has a reported incidence of up to 62% following general anaesthesia. POST was rated by patients as the eighth most undesirable outcome in the postoperative period. The objective of this study was to compare the incidence and severity of postoperative sore throat after saline and ketamine nebulization in patients undergoing general anaesthesia with endotracheal intubation. MethodsThe study was prospective double blinded randomized controlled trial . One hundred patients belonging to American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I–II undergoing surgery under general anaesthesia with endotracheal intubation were randomized into two groups; group Saline (S) received nebulization with 5 ml of normal saline and group Ketamine (K) received nebulization with 1 ml of ketamine of concentration 50 mg/ml mixed with 4 ml saline. POST was assessed at zero hour, two hour, four hour, six hour, eight hour and 24 hour. ResultsThe overall incidence of POST was 28%. Twenty two (44%) patients in group S and six (12%) patients in group K had postoperative sore throat at some point of the study. 9. Epidemiology of Important Poultry Diseases in Nepal

Abstract

Despite the rapidly growing poultry industry throughout Nepal, the periodic outbreaks of diseases and infections in poultry birds led to huge production loss. The aim of this study was to identify the top ten poultry diseases in Nepal and an analysis of their seasonal distributions. A cross-sectional study was performed to describe the distributions of major poultry diseases diagnosed from April 2018 to April 2019 at Central Veterinary Laboratory, Nepal. Out of 2358 observations recorded at the CVL registry at that period, only 2271 observations qualified for the final analysis. Among 2271, removing the missing values, only 1915 observations were used to describe bird characteristics such as median age and mean flock sizes. Descriptive analysis and graphical representation was performed in R studio (Version 1.0.143) and MS excel 2010 respectively. The top ten diseases identified with highest to lowest incidence were: colibacillosis 26% (584/2271), mycotoxicosis 13% (301/2271), ascites 10% (232/2271), complicated chronic respiratory disease (cCRD) 9% (196/2271), infectious bursal disease (IBD) 7% (155/2271), Newcastle disease (ND) 7% (148/2271), avian influenza (AI) 3% (76/2271), salmonellosis 2% (40/2271), infectious bronchitis 1% (33/2271), coccidiosis 1% (25/2271) and non-specific diseases accounts for 21% (481/2271). Cases of colibacillosis were predominant all year round. Mycotoxicosis was seen mostly during pre-monsoon and monsoon season. Ascites and IBD were common during spring and winter seasons. cCRD was most common during summer and winter months. AI kept changing the disease outbreak pattern but it was most common during spring and summer. The number of cases of Salmonella, IB and coccidiosis were not sufficient to provide the seasonal trend. Identification of common poultry disease and their seasonal distributions is useful in taking preventive measures such as vaccination and good management practices to minimize their incidence in the future.

10. Microalbuminuria as a Predictor of Pre-eclampsia in Pregnant Women Presenting in the Antenatal Clinic at Dhulikhel Hospital

Abstract

Background Pre-eclampsia is described as a pregnancy-specific syndrome that can affect virtually every organ system. The appearance of proteinuria remains an important diagnostic criterion. Proteinuria is an objective marker and reflects system-wide endothelial leak, which characterizes the pre-eclampsia syndrome. Objective To determine protein values using the spot urinary albumin/creatinine ratio amongst the pregnant women and to identify whether this test can be used as the investigation of choice for predicting pre-eclampsia in near future. Method A hospital based observational cross-sectional study conducted from February 2016 to August 2017. The study included pregnant women from 20-28 weeks of gestation. They were tested for spot urinary albumin and creatinine. They were all followed up till term, delivery and post partum. Result The mean age of the study patients was 28 years (N+335), the most common age group being 25 to 29 years (43.6%). Pregnant women with higher values of urinary albumin/creatinine ratio were found to develop hypertension compared to women with normal values of urinary albumin/creatinine ratio in the third trimester with insignificant difference (p0.283) statistically. Conclusion Microalbuminuria is one of the predictor of pre-eclampsia however it cannot be used as routine investigation for predicting pre-eclampsia in future; further studies in large scales are needed to prove whether urinary albumin/creatinine ratio can be utilized as predictor for pre-eclampsia or not.

Abstract

Inhabitants of the upper Himalayan regions entertain a belief that the Chir Pine trees are ingressing the Broadleaf forest areas and that these areas are gradually turning into water stressed regions as Chir Pines adversely influence water recharge and water availability. This paper examines whether and to what extent the Chir Pine forest areas are water stressed compared to Broadleaf forest areas by studying the household coping cost in relation to water stress. We use the coping cost differences thereafter to value the relative water provisioning services of forest types. We conduct multiple focus group discussions, a questionnaire survey and statistical analyses to derive the results. Results show all households, except the ones living near Deodar forest, to face water stress in summer but the Chir Pine areas are the most water-stressed. Both comparison of mean and multivariate regressions of water collection time and other coping costs show that the villagers surrounded by Deodar, Deodar mix pine, Broadleaf mix bush or Broadleaf mix pine forests spend much less time for water collection and spend less on water treatment and storage compared to the villagers surrounded by Chir Pine forest irrespective of elevation, aspect or model used. These differences in water collection time amount to a wage income loss between USD 31 and USD 318 in India, and between USD 23 and USD 238 in Nepal per year per household, in Chir Pine areas compared to other forest areas.

Abstract

We report a precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry A_{PV} in the elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from ^{208}Pb. We measure A_{PV}=550±16(stat)±8(syst) parts per billion, leading to an extraction of the neutral weak form factor F_{W}(Q^{2}=0.00616 GeV^{2})=0.368±0.013. Combined with our previous measurement, the extracted neutron skin thickness is R_{n}-R_{p}=0.283±0.071 fm. The result also yields the first significant direct measurement of the interior weak density of ^{208}Pb: ρ_{W}^{0}=-0.0796±0.0036(exp)±0.0013(theo) fm^{-3} leading to the interior baryon density ρ_{b}^{0}=0.1480±0.0036(exp)±0.0013(theo) fm^{-3}. The measurement accurately constrains the density dependence of the symmetry energy of nuclear matter near saturation density, with implications for the size and composition of neutron stars.

Abstract

This study was conducted in the Kanda Area of Bajhang District, Kailash Sacred Landscape, Nepal. Inhabitants of the study areas have deep and extensive ethnobotanical knowledge on healthcare choices. They use plant resources on a wide scale to treat certain diseases, illnesses and ailments/conditions. Even though many resort to the local health post and to privately run pharmacies for allopathic medicines, the large majority use these in conjunction with household remedies made from local medicinal plants. Their uses are intertwined and interconnected. A small number resort to traditional healers, either alone or in conjunction with other medicinal practices. Shamanism is important part of traditional medicinal practices. Thus, important changes are taking place in perceptions and knowledge as well as the use of local plant resources. This study documented TK of remote villages in Far-Western Nepal.

16. Study of Prescription Pattern and Factors Associated with Clinical Outcomes in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus with Reference to Short Term Glycemic Control

Abstract

Background Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Though oral hypoglycemic agents (OHAs) or/and insulin are prescribed to control the hyperglycemia, still glycemic control is not seen in most of the cases. Evaluating the treatment pattern including the glycemic control and associated factors are of utmost importance for better patient care. Objective To investigate the treatment pattern and short term glycemic control among Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM2) patients and study the factors associated with it. Method Patients meeting the inclusion criteria with DM2 attending laboratory or Out-Patient Department or Emergency Department in Dhulikhel Hospital and patients who were admitted to the ward taking various OHAs and/or insulin at the time of data collection were considered. Informed consent was taken prior to the interview. The collected data was entered as well as analyzed using the SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) version 21.0 and the p-value0.05 was considered statistically significant. Result Among the 118 patients, 50.8% of them were males. Majority (28%) of the patients belonged to the age group of 51-60 years. Out of the 118 patients, 22% had their fasting blood glucose (FBG) level under control whereas 78% had uncontrolled FBG level. Metformin was the most (28%) commonly prescribed drug. Significant association was found between gender; knowledge about disease and medication with short term glycemic control (p=0.034, p=0.004 ans p=0.039 respectively). Conclusion All the patients enrolled in this study were under various anti-diabetic medications, however, majority of them didn't have their glycemia under control. Significant association was found between FBG level and gender, knowledge about disease and knowledge about medication.

Abstract

Harvesting of mature forest crop, regenerating the harvested area and tending of young crop are major silvicultural operations in forest management. Silvicultural system provides a framework for carrying out these silvicultural operations in a systematic manner. Yield is the annual amount of produce that can be realized sustainably. Similarly, thinning is the principal tending operation carried out in immature crop, is more often complicated in natural forest. This paper attempts to review silvicultural system applied in Terai region of Nepal under scientific forest management in order to regulate yield and to suggest new methods of thinning in natural forests. The study was conducted in Buddha Shanti Collaborative Forest in Nawalparasi district, western Terai Nepal. Data related to implementation status of CFM Plan were collected through field observation. Harvesting data were collected during harvesting operation. The collected harvesting data were analyzed for yield regulation. Irregular shelter-wood system was applied in Buddha Shanti CFM. The applied method of yield regulation is combination of area and stem control. Area control is applied for regeneration period. Annual harvest is controlled by number of stems. Tree harvesting area is fixed for ten years and annual harvesting amount is fixed by number of tree. In this method annual numbers of trees for harvesting are fixed. Total enumeration method was applied for thinning to find out the most frequent size of pole in selected sub compartment. During the enumeration process; distance between the every stem and fore bearing was also recorded with the help of laser distance meter and compass. A stem map was prepared with the help of Arc-GIS and the grid distance was fixed based on the most frequent size of stem. Then, one stem from each grid was selected for retaining after harvesting and remaining stems were cut down. This method provides appropriate guideline for implementing it objectively by reducing subjective judgment and provide more systematic method for thinning. The field practices of application of silvicultural system and yield regulation were found in accordance to the scientific forest management Procedures 2014 in Buddha Shanti CFM. Abstract

The impacts of climate change in terms of forest vegetation shifts and Net Primary Productivity (NPP) changes are assessed for Brahmaputra, Koshi and Indus river basins for the mid (2021-2050) and long (2071-2100) terms for RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios. Two Dynamical Global Vegetation Models (DGVMs), Integrated BIosphere Simulator (IBIS) and (Lund Postdam and Jena (LPJ), have been used for this purpose. The DGVMs are driven by the ensemble mean climate projections from 5 climate models that contributed to the CMIP5 data base. While both DGVMs project vegetation shifts in the forest areas of the basins, there are large differences in vegetation shifts projected by IBIS and LPJ. This may be attributed to differing representation of land surface processes and to differences in the number of vegetation types (Plant Functional Types) defined and simulated in the two models. However, there is some agreement in NPP changes as projected by both IBIS and LPJ, with IBIS mostly projecting a larger increase in NPP for the future scenarios. Despite the uncertainties with respect to climate change projections at river basin level and the differing impact assessments from different DGVMs, it is necessary to assess the “vulnerability” of the forest ecosystems and forest dependent communities to current climate risks and future climate change and to develop and implement resilience or adaptation measures. Assessment of the “vulnerability” and designing of the adaptation strategies could be undertaken for all the forested grids where both IBIS and LPJ project vegetation shifts.

20. Medication Adherence to Levothyroxine Therapy among Hypothyroid Patients and their Clinical Outcomes with Special Reference to Thyroid Function Parameters

Abstract

Background Non-adherence to medication in hypothyroid patients leads to poor clinical outcome and increased health care costs. Study related to adherence to levothyroxine in hypothyroid patients is limited worldwide. Objective To determine the adherence pattern and factors affecting adherence in hypothyroid patients and compare the clinical outcomes among adherent and non-adherent patients. Method A cross-sectional study was conducted in Dhulikhel hospital, Kathmandu University hospital. Patients with hypothyroidism on levothyroxine fulfilling the inclusion criteria were enrolled in this study. After obtaining the informed consent from the patients, structured questionnaire was used to interview the patients. Statistical analysis was performed by using SPSS 23.0. P-value0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Result Among 113 patients enrolled in this study, 85.8% of them were females. Majority (76.10%) of them belonged to the age group of 31-40 years. More than half (51.3%) of the patients were adherent to medication. Non-adherence was significantly associated with literate people following medication (p=0.003, OR=0.305), missed appointment to follow-up (p=0.007, OR=0.346) and longer duration of medication (p=0.019, OR=4.385). However, there was no statistically significant association of clinical outcomes with reference to TSH, fT4, fT3 and patients' age, adherence to medication and concomitant use of other drugs. Conclusion More than half of the patients were adhered to the Levothyroxine therapy. Forgetfulness was the main reason for missing the dose and non-specific reasons attributed to discontinuation of medication for these patients. Good adherence was seen among illiterate people. Treatment related factor, patient-provider relationship and patient related factor were determined as the major barrier to medication adherence. Most of the non-adherent patients had uncontrolled TSH.

Abstract

Abstract The Pandora Software Development Kit and algorithm libraries provide pattern-recognition logic essential to the reconstruction of particle interactions in liquid argon time projection chamber detectors. Pandora is the primary event reconstruction software used at ProtoDUNE-SP, a prototype for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment far detector. ProtoDUNE-SP, located at CERN, is exposed to a charged-particle test beam. This paper gives an overview of the Pandora reconstruction algorithms and how they have been tailored for use at ProtoDUNE-SP. In complex events with numerous cosmic-ray and beam background particles, the simulated reconstruction and identification efficiency for triggered test-beam particles is above 80% for the majority of particle type and beam momentum combinations. Specifically, simulated 1 GeV/c charged pions and protons are correctly reconstructed and identified with efficiencies of 86.1 $$\pm 0.6$$ ± 0.6 % and 84.1 $$\pm 0.6$$ ± 0.6 %, respectively. The efficiencies measured for test-beam data are shown to be within 5% of those predicted by the simulation.

Abstract

The paper explores the state-civil society relations in Nepal, which have gone through many ups and downs from various perspectives. This is important for the reason that the two terms are now in the forefront of public debate: Rajya – the state and Nagarik Samaj – civil society. Voices, both in favour and against the state and civil society, are now audible everywhere. The debate has picked up momentum, particularly after the regime change of 2006, when civil society took a new birth and played a crucial role in regime. However, all is not well with the role of both state and civil society. The point at stake, however, is how should one describe the state-civil society relations in Nepal; how they influence, behave, and view each other; and where do they converge and diverge? These are some of the important issues that need to be looked into carefully. The rise of right-based civil society organisations (CSOs) in Nepal has further created confusion vis-a-vis state. Within these contexts, paper here attempts to explain the extant interface.

Abstract

Background: Pregnancy and childbirth is normal physiological process with great pathological potential. The obstetricians are more concerned with the early recognition of fetal distress during labour and such an adverse outcome should be detected at the earliest point of time by an effective surveillance method. Cardiotocography as a part of biophysical profile has become an established diagnostic tool for fetal surveillance. To compare early perinatal outcome of normal and abnormal cardiotocography in terms of APGAR scores, need for neonatal resuscitation, NICU admission, perinatal death and mode of delivery.Methods: It was a cross-sectional study. 200 nulliparous/multiparous women with singleton pregnancy in cephalic presentation at gestational age 37-42 weeks in latent stage of labor were enrolled in the study and subjected to admission test in left lateral position using fetal monitor. Baseline FHR and contraction pattern were determined for 20 minutes and classification of patients was done into normal, and suspicious or abnormal according to the FIGO guidelines 2015.Results: Low APGAR scores, rate of LSCS, need for neonatal resuscitation, neonatal admission were more in the abnormal cardiotocography group. Cardiotocography in the current study has high sensitivity and high negative predictive value for detecting fetal distress.Conclusions: From the analysis of this study, it would be safe to conclude that an ominous cardiotocography should be managed appropriately without delay and obstetrician should be vigilant in suspicious as well as in normal admission test group for timely intervention for bettering the neonatal outcome.

Abstract

Abstract Liquid argon time projection chamber detector technology provides high spatial and calorimetric resolutions on the charged particles traversing liquid argon. As a result, the technology has been used in a number of recent neutrino experiments, and is the technology of choice for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). In order to perform high precision measurements of neutrinos in the detector, final state particles need to be effectively identified, and their energy accurately reconstructed. This article proposes an algorithm based on a convolutional neural network to perform the classification of energy deposits and reconstructed particles as track-like or arising from electromagnetic cascades. Results from testing the algorithm on experimental data from ProtoDUNE-SP, a prototype of the DUNE far detector, are presented. The network identifies track- and shower-like particles, as well as Michel electrons, with high efficiency. The performance of the algorithm is consistent between experimental data and simulation.

Abstract

This article deals with the role of external actors in the post-2006 state-building process in Nepal. Two issues have dominated the state-building narrative after 2006: the peace-process and the constitutional process. There has been a strong presence of international agencies. Both issues were later usurped by the external agencies and Nepal loses its upper hand in determining politics, policies, and the law and reverted beyond the 1923 situation. Foreign policy, which should have been used to rescue the country from such a dilemma, could not act in the context of a weak centre. Against this background, this article endeavours to explain the degree of external pressure vis-a-vis the state-building process in Nepal. The central argument of this article is that among many other factors, state-building in Nepal suffers both ‘because of and despite’ its geo-strategic locations and it proposes a proactive foreign policy as the balancing force.

Abstract

We present a multiwavelength spectral study of NGC 4151 based on five epochs of simultaneous AstroSat observations in the near-ultraviolet (NUV) to hard X-ray band (∼0.005–80 keV) during 2017–2018. We derived the intrinsic accretion disk continuum after correcting for internal and Galactic extinction, contributions from broad- and narrow-line regions, and emission from the host galaxy. We found a bluer continuum at brighter UV flux, possibly due to variations in the accretion disk continuum or the UV reddening. We estimated the intrinsic reddening, E ( B − V ) ∼ 0.4, using high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/STIS spectrum acquired in 2000 March. We used thermal Comptonization, neutral and ionized absorption, and X-ray reflection to model the X-ray spectra. We obtained the X-ray absorbing neutral column varying between N _H ∼1.2 and 3.4 × 10 ^23 cm ^−2 , which are ∼100 times larger than that estimated from UV extinction, assuming the Galactic dust-to-gas ratio. To reconcile this discrepancy, we propose two plausible configurations of the obscurer: (a) a two-zone obscurer consisting of dust-free and dusty regions, divided by the sublimation radius, or (b) a two-phase obscurer consisting of clumpy, dense clouds embedded in a low-density medium, resulting in a scenario where a few dense clouds obscure the compact X-ray source substantially, while the bulk of UV emission arising from the extended accretion disk passes through the low-density medium. Furthermore, we find a positive correlation between the X-ray absorption column and NUV − far-UV color and UV flux, indicative of enhanced winds possibly driven by the “bluer-when-brighter” UV continuum.

Abstract

The radiation mechanism underlying the prompt emission remains unresolved and can be resolved using a systematic and uniform time-resolved spectro-polarimetric study. In this paper, we investigated the spectral, temporal, and polarimetric characteristics of five bright gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) using archival data from AstroSat CZTI, Swift Burst Alert Telescope, and Fermi/GBM. These bright GRBs were detected by CZTI in its first year of operation, and their average polarization characteristics have been published in Chattopadhyay et al. In the present work, we examined the time-resolved (in 100–600 keV) and energy-resolved polarization measurements of these GRBs with an improved polarimetric technique such as increasing the effective area and bandwidth (by using data from low-gain pixels), using an improved event selection logic to reduce noise in the double events and extend the spectral bandwidth. In addition, we also separately carried out detailed time-resolved spectral analyses of these GRBs using empirical and physical synchrotron models. By these improved time-resolved and energy-resolved spectral and polarimetric studies (not fully coupled spectro-polarimetric fitting), we could pin down the elusive prompt emission mechanism of these GRBs. Our spectro-polarimetric analysis reveals that GRB 160623A, GRB 160703A, and GRB 160821A have Poynting flux-dominated jets. On the other hand, GRB 160325A and GRB 160802A have baryonic-dominated jets with mild magnetization. Furthermore, we observe a rapid change in polarization angle by ∼90° within the main pulse of very bright GRB 160821A, consistent with our previous results. Our study suggests that the jet composition of GRBs may exhibit a wide range of magnetization, which can be revealed by utilizing spectro-polarimetric investigations of the bright GRBs.

Abstract

The third Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog (GWTC-3) describes signals detected with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo up to the end of their third observing run. Updating the previous GWTC-2.1, we present candidate gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences during the second half of the third observing run (O3b) between 1 November 2019, 15∶00 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and 27 March 2020, 17∶00 UTC. There are 35 compact binary coalescence candidates identified by at least one of our search algorithms with a probability of astrophysical origin p_{astro}>0.5. Of these, 18 were previously reported as low-latency public alerts, and 17 are reported here for the first time. Based upon estimates for the component masses, our O3b candidates with p_{astro}>0.5 are consistent with gravitational-wave signals from binary black holes or neutron-star–black-hole binaries, and we identify none from binary neutron stars. However, from the gravitational-wave data alone, we are not able to measure matter effects that distinguish whether the binary components are neutron stars or black holes. The range of inferred component masses is similar to that found with previous catalogs, but the O3b candidates include the first confident observations of neutron-star–black-hole binaries. Including the 35 candidates from O3b in addition to those from GWTC-2.1, GWTC-3 contains 90 candidates found by our analysis with p_{astro}>0.5 across the first three observing runs. These observations of compact binary coalescences present an unprecedented view of the properties of black holes and neutron stars.

Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to provide information about Nepal's civil society as far as possible, as the same has become much contested in recent years. The article looks into the different traditions (from traditional to post-modern) of civil society in Nepal as an endeavour to take stock of where it stands vis-a-vis with various factors in the context of economy, polity, and society. The paper argues that, although Nepal has a very long tradition of civil society, the extant one is highly politicized. Part of the problem with politicization lies with perpetual political instability and part with the way civil society has come to be understood. In the context of Nepal, there are yet no clear tools developed to map the civil society. It concludes that one cannot have water-tight compartmentalization of civil society and other societies as they are interdependent, but when civil society groups lose the civility factor, they are bound to face legitimacy questions—which perhaps is the case in Nepal.

Abstract

Rapid identification of infectious disease pathogens such as foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) during new outbreaks of disease is of fundamental importance in disease control. SpectroSensTM optical microchip sensors demonstrating rapid, label-free detection of FMDV are presented; these contain multiple high-precision planar Bragg gratings and function as low-cost, robust refractive-index sensors. Sensor selectivity to FMDV is imparted by functionalising the top-surface of specific sensing channels with anti-FMDV monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). Selective binding of cognate antigens within the test sample to surface-immobilised FMDV mAbs results in localised changes in refractive index within specific sensing channels; these antibody-antigen interactions manifest as increases in wavelength of light reflected from the multi-channel sensor chip (light is coupled into and out of the chip via optical fibres). Selective identification of FMDV within minutes of sample introduction has been demonstrated by referenced measurement of changes in sensor reflected wavelength from anti-FMDV channels against sensor controls; simplified ‘snap-shot’ assay data are displayed in the form of a simple yes/no readout using a robust, hand-portable device, with further semi-quantitative information available to the ‘super-user’. The characteristics of the SpectroSensTM multiplexed detection platform highlight its potential for in-field detection of foot-and-mouth disease and prospective expansion into diagnoses of other infectious veterinary diseases.

Abstract

An optical waveguide array biosensor suitable for rapid detection of multiple bio-hazardous agents is presented. SpectroSens™ optical microchip sensors contain multiple spatially-separated waveguide channels with integral high-precision Bragg gratings sensitive to changes in refractive-index; selective surface-functionalisation of discrete sensing channels with different antibodies as bio-recognition elements enables selective multi-analyte biological detection. Interactions between target antigens in the test sample and respective surface-immobilised antibodies result in localised changes in refractive-index; the biosensor response manifests as increases in wavelength of light reflected from specific sensing channels. Multiplexed, label-free detection of 8 different biological agents, encompassing bacterial spores, vegetative cells, viruses and proteinaceous toxins has been demonstrated in real-time. Selective detection of Bacillus atrophaeus (BG) spores, Escherichia coli cells, MS2 viruses and ovalbumin (OVA) protein (simulant bio-hazardous agents) was first demonstrated as proof-of-concept; subsequently, detection of Bacillus anthracis (BA) spores (UM23CL2 strain), Franciscella tularensis (FT) cells (live vaccine strain), Vaccinia viruses (heat-killed) and ricin toxin (bio-hazardous agents) was proven. Two optical microchip sensors, each comprising 8 sensing channels were packaged into a single disposable cartridge allowing simultaneous 16-channel data acquisition. The specific antibody deposition sequence used in this study enabled detection of either 4 simulants or 4 bio-hazardous agents using a single consumable. The final device, a culmination of the multidisciplinary convergence of the fields of biology, chemistry, optoelectronics and microfluidics, is man-portable and inherently robust. The performance characteristics of the SpectroSens™ technology platform highlight its potential for exploitation as a 'detect to warn/treat' biodetector in security and defence operations.

Abstract

Abstract DUNE is a dual-site experiment for long-baseline neutrino oscillation studies, neutrino astrophysics and nucleon decay searches. ProtoDUNE Dual Phase (DP) is a 6 $$\times $$ × 6 $$\times $$ × 6 m $$^3$$ 3 liquid argon time-projection-chamber (LArTPC) that recorded cosmic-muon data at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2019–2020 as a prototype of the DUNE Far Detector. Charged particles propagating through the LArTPC produce ionization and scintillation light. The scintillation light signal in these detectors can provide the trigger for non-beam events. In addition, it adds precise timing capabilities and improves the calorimetry measurements. In ProtoDUNE-DP, scintillation and electroluminescence light produced by cosmic muons in the LArTPC is collected by photomultiplier tubes placed up to 7 m away from the ionizing track. In this paper, the ProtoDUNE-DP photon detection system performance is evaluated with a particular focus on the different wavelength shifters, such as PEN and TPB, and the use of Xe-doped LAr, considering its future use in giant LArTPCs. The scintillation light production and propagation processes are analyzed and a comparison of simulation to data is performed, improving understanding of the liquid argon properties.

Abstract

A universal optical microchip sensing platform demonstrating real-time, label-free detection of a wide range of biological agents is presented. SpectroSens™ chips containing high-precision planar Bragg gratings are exploited as low-cost, robust refractive index sensors. Sensitivity to biological agents is conferred by functionalising the sensing surface with antibodies selected against targets of interest. Several methods for immobilisation of bio-molecules on the metal oxide-coated sensing surface have been investigated. In this study, surfaces were modified with an amino-terminated silane monolayer and activated by glutaraldehyde cross-linking for covalent attachment of recombinant Protein A/G, to which agent-specific antibodies were immobilised. Binding of target antigens (introduced under flow) to the surface-immobilised antibodies results in localised changes in refractive index; upon laser-induced interrogation of the sensing region via optical fibres, these antibody–antigen interactions manifest as increases in wavelength of light reflected from the Bragg grating. Detection of biological targets including proteins (ovalbumin Escherichia coli > 1 μm) and spores ( Bacillus atrophaeus > 1 μm) in real-time has been demonstrated. The large size range of detection targets is attributed to a large penetration depth of the sensing light of >1 μm into the sample liquid using these sensors. This multi-analyte capability enables utilisation of this sensing technology in applications ranging from bio-threat detection for defence and homeland security to point-of-care clinical diagnostics.

Abstract

An enzyme-linked holographic sensor for the detection of spore-specific calcium dipicolinate (Ca-DPA) is described. Small, acid-soluble spore proteins (SASPs) extracted from dormant spores are exploited as holographic matrices. Reflection holograms are incorporated into SASP films using a diffusion method for the distribution of ultra-fine silver bromide grains into pre-formed polymers, followed by holographic recording using a frequency doubled Nd:YAG (532 nm) laser. Changes in holographic diffraction intensity are used to characterise the structural integrity of SASP-based matrices in response to proteolytic attack by recombinant germination protease (GPR S ), following activation with Ca-DPA; the holographic response manifests as an irreversible reduction in diffraction intensity due to progressive fringe removal caused by SASP degradation. This work demonstrates proof-of principle of a Ca-DPA-activated enzyme-linked holographic sensor, highlighting the potential of a system whereby Ca-DPA released from germinating spores may activate GPR in the vicinity of an SASP-based holographic matrix; such a sensor system presents a novel platform for the selective detection of bacterial spores with intrinsic signal amplification.

Abstract

Intro: Different vaccines against COVID-19 have been approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) at different stages, however, limited data is available on long-term kinetics of antibodies induced by vaccines. This study was performed to investigate the persistence and dynamicity of BBV-152 (Covaxin)- and AZD1222 (Covishield)-induced immunoglobulin-G (IgG) antibodies over the year and neutralizing antibodies’ status after the one-month post booster dose. Methods: This 52-week longitudinal cohort study documented antibody persistence and neutralizing antibody status among 278 health-care workers (HCWs) from four different healthcare and research facilities in Odisha, enrolled in January 2021 and continued until March 2022. An automated chemiluminescence immune assay (CLIA) platform from Abbott Diagnostics was used to quantify IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2′s spike receptor-binding domain (RBD) and a surrogate virus neutralization test (sVNT) was performed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). If any participants developed any symptoms of COVID-19, nasopharyngeal swabs were collected and sent to ICMR- RMRC, Bhubaneswar for RT-PCR confirmation. Findings: Among the 243 participants, 119 HCWs (48.97%) were Covaxin recipients and the remaining 124 (51.02%) were Covishield recipients. During the seven follow- ups, 104 participants (42.79%) were identified as vaccine breakthrough cases. In 139 non-infected HCWs, the median antibody titer significantly waned after ten months of double dose, both for Covaxin (342.7 AU/mL at DD1 vs 43.9 AU/mL at DD10) and Covishield (2325.8 AU/mL at DD3 vs 595.2 AU/mL at DD10). No statistically significant differences in antibody titers were observed based on age, gender, comorbidities, and blood groups. The median inhibition activity of sVNT was increased significantly for Covaxin and Covishield booster recipients. Among the booster dose recipients, 24 had breakthrough cases by the Omicron variant. Conclusion: Results of this longitudinal cohort study can be used to implement vaccination strategies and could also aid in tracking and designing vaccine mandates to minimize vaccine escape.

Abstract

Abstract The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission instrument suite includes an ultraviolet echelle spectrograph with high‐spectral resolution designed to resolve D and H Lyman‐α emissions. The high‐spectral resolution mode was previously characterized in the lab and in the cruise phase to Mars and had been calibrated using observations and models of interplanetary hydrogen Lyman‐α emissions. This work presents improved characterizations of the high‐spectral resolution mode using in‐orbit observations that allow for more robust detections of the faint D Lyman‐α emission line. Additionally, the instrument was re‐calibrated using simultaneous and comparable observations made with the Hubble Space Telescope high‐spectral resolution instrument. Comparisons to Lyman‐α observations made with the low‐resolution UV channel on the spectrometer, that had been calibrated with stars, showed consistency in the brightness values for measurements obtained at similar observational conditions. The combined upgrades to the faint‐emission fitting and new calibration techniques of the MAVEN echelle channel have resulted in an improved data‐reduction pipeline with favorable implications for the science utility of D and H Lyman‐α emissions.

Abstract

Holographic sensors for the detection of Bacillus species spore germination and vegetative growth are described. Reflection holograms were fabricated using a diffusion method for the distribution of ultra-fine silver bromide grains into pre-formed polymer films, followed by holographic recording using a frequency doubled Nd:YAG (532 nm) laser. Changes in holographic replay wavelength or diffraction intensity were used to characterise the swelling behaviour or structural integrity of a range of holographic matrices in response to various extracellular products of bacterial spore germination and vegetative metabolism. Divalent metal ion-sensitive holograms containing a methacrylated analogue of nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) as the chelating monomer were successfully used to monitor Ca2+ ions released during B. subtilis spore germination in real-time, which was within minutes of sample addition; the holographic response manifested as a 16 nm blue-shift in diffraction wavelength over the progress of germination. Similarly, pH-sensitive holograms comprising methacrylic acid (MAA) as the ionisable monomer were responsive to changes in pH associated with early vegetative metabolism following germination of B. megaterium spores; a visually perceptible blue-shift in holographic replay wavelength of 75 nm was observed. Casein and starch-based holographic matrices, prepared by co-polymerisation of the appropriate substrate with acrylamide, were used to detect exo-enzymes released during later stages of B. megaterium and B. subtilis vegetative cell growth; holographic responses of both matrices were visible as a reduction in diffraction intensity due to progressive fringe disruption caused by enzymatic cleavage. The combined monitoring of various germination and growth events using the range of aforementioned holographic sensors provides a novel, comprehensive means for the detection of viable bacterial spores.

Abstract

A decomposition study of γ-irradiated (0.2 MGy) La2 (C2O4)3 + CuO (10 mol%) mixture has been carried out at 380–540 °C, using a rising temperature technique in air. The results are compared with those of the unirradiated sample in order to explore the simultaneous effect of γ-irradiation and admixture on the decomposition of lanthanum oxalate. Considering the data in the light of theories of different kinetic models, they are found to fit best to a third-order rate law. Though both the treatments increase the energy of activation, the admixture enhances the rate constant appreciably, but only a marginal effect is observed in the case of irradiation. The rate constant, k and energy of activation, E follow the order: and respectively. A kinetic compensation law with a kinetic model function, g(α) is established for four sets of reaction.

Quantum noise imposes a fundamental limitation on the sensitivity of interferometric gravitational-wave detectors like LIGO, manifesting as shot noise and quantum radiation pressure noise. Here, we present the first realization of frequency-dependent squeezing in full-scale gravitational-wave detectors, resulting in the reduction of both shot noise and quantum radiation pressure noise, with broadband detector enhancement from tens of hertz to several kilohertz. In the LIGO Hanford detector, squeezing reduced the detector noise amplitude by a factor of 1.6 (4.0 dB) near 1 kHz; in the Livingston detector, the noise reduction was a factor of 1.9 (5.8 dB). These improvements directly impact LIGO’s scientific output for high-frequency sources (e.g., binary neutron star postmerger physics). The improved low-frequency sensitivity, which boosted the detector range by 15%–18% with respect to no squeezing, corresponds to an increase in the astrophysical detection rate of up to 65%. Frequency-dependent squeezing was enabled by the addition of a 300-meter-long filter cavity to each detector as part of the LIGO A+ upgrade.

Abstract

A study on the thermal decomposition of mixtures of lanthanum oxalate hydrate and magnesium chromite spinel, MgCr2O4 of different molar ratios has been carried out employing thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis, chemical analysis, infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. It is evident from the data that lanthanum oxalate in the presence of mixed oxide starts to decompose at a temperature higher than the pure salt. The results reveal that chromium oxide has a retarding effect on the decomposition rate and addition of magnesium oxide leads to an observable increase in the catalytic behaviour of Cr2O3 towards the decomposition below 440 °C, above which it increases significantly with increasing percentage of MgCr2O4. The induced defects during the formation of solid solution alters the conductive properties of the oxide, due to generation of more holes within the catalyst, consequently increasing its, activity towards decomposition. The kinetic and thermogravimetric parameters are evaluated in the light of D3 mechanism. Abstract

The bacterial superantigen staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA) is a potent inducer of CTL activity and cytokine production in vivo. Protein A (PA) of Staphylococcal aureus has been found to have diverse biological response modifying properties and to possess antitumor, antitoxic and antiparasitic effects. In this study we examined the anti-tumor effect of these two superantigens used separately as well as in combination in mice carrying the Ehrlich ascites tumor. With combined treatment, DNA cell cycle analysis of tumor cells showed a significant (P0.05) percentage of tumor cell death. Levels of the soluble mediators TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma and IL-1 as well as NO were elevated. Additionally, CD4(+) and CD8(+) specific T cells in spleen, thymus and PBMC in tumor carrying mice were increased (P0.01). Our data altogether suggests that enhanced tumor cell death is caused by the increased CTL activity, cytokine and nitric oxide levels, in response to the combined effect of SEA + PA.

Abstract

The simultaneous rising temperature (DTA-TG) technique and the gas evolution method are adopted for studying the thermal decomposition of unirradiated and irradiated MgC2O4 and MgC2O4 + TiO2 mixtures. The data are applied to theories of different solid state reaction models and the best fit is obtained for the Avrami-Erofeev mechanism (n=2) suggesting that both the nucleation and growth processes occur at the reactant product interface in a two dimensional chain branching manner. Low irradiation doses decrease the rate of reaction remarkably whereas the reverse phenomenon takes place at higher doses. The n-type semiconducting oxide, TiO2 (5-40 mol%) enhances the rate of decomposition which increases with increasing concentration of the catalyst. The influence of n -irradiation is explained in the light of defects, dislocations and electron-hole (e−, h+) pairs generated in the lattice, whereas the influence of TiO2 is understood on the basis of electron transfer process involved in the reaction.

Abstract

The bacterial superantigen Staphylococcal enterotoxin-A (SEA), produced by some strains of Staphylococcus aureus, causes proliferation of cytotoxic T-lymphocytes and cytokine production in vivo. SEA has been shown to be highly efficient for antibody-targeted superantegen immunotherapy for different tumor models. A candidate B-cell superantigen that has received considerable attention these days is staphylococcal protein-A (PA). It has been shown to possess multiple immunological responses. The anti-tumor property of PA is well documented in the literature in various transplantable tumors of rats and mice. In the present study, we have shown that the T-cell superantigen SEA and B-cell superantigen PA induce immunomodulatory and anti-tumor activity which is strongly protentiated by PA + SEA co-administration. Combination treatment with PA and SEA prolongs the immune response in vivo, limits the development of immunological unresponsiveness and promotes maximum anti-tumor effects to tumor carrying animals, as compared with PA or SEA alone. The immune response after combined therapy is characterized by substantially augmented IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha, Nitric oxide and strong CTL activity. Our data demonstrate that combined PA + SEA therapy induces long-term survival of the animals, carrying the Ehrlich ascites tumor.

Abstract

Thermal decomposition of co-precipitated unirradiated and irradiated Ca-Gd oxalate has been studied by adopting differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetric (TG) techniques. The reaction occurs through two stages corresponding to the decomposition of gadolinium oxalate (Gd-Ox) followed by that of calcium oxalate (Ca-Ox). The kinetic parameters for both the stages are calculated by using solid state reaction models and Coats-Redfern's equation. The co-precipitation as well as irradiation alter the DTA peak temperatures and the kinetic parameters of Ca-Ox. The decomposition of Gd-Ox follows the two dimensional Contracting area (R 2 ) mechanism, while that of Ca-Ox follows the Avrami-Erofeev (A 2 ) mechanism (n = 2), which are also exhibited by the co-precipitated and irradiated samples. Co-precipitation decreases the energy of activation and the pre-exponential factor of the individual components but the reverse phenomenon takes place upon irradiation of the co-precipitate. The mechanisms underlying the phenomena are explored.
