Abstract: The IceCube Neutrino Observatory instruments about 1 km3 of deep, glacial ice at the geographic South Pole. It uses 5160 photomultipliers to detect Cherenkov light emitted by charged relativistic particles. An unexpected light propagation effect observed by the experiment is an anisotropic attenuation, which is aligned with the local flow direction of the ice. We examine birefringent light propagation through the polycrystalline ice microstructure as a possible explanation for this effect. The predictions of a first-principles model developed for this purpose, in particular curved light trajectories resulting from asymmetric diffusion, provide a qualitatively good match to the main features of the data. This in turn allows us to deduce ice crystal properties. Since the wavelength of the detected light is short compared to the crystal size, these crystal properties include not only the crystal orientation fabric, but also the average crystal size and shape, as a function of depth. By adding small empirical corrections to this first-principles model, a quantitatively accurate description of the optical properties of the IceCube glacial ice is obtained. In this paper, we present the experimental signature of ice optical anisotropy observed in IceCube light-emitting diode (LED) calibration data, the theory and parameterization of the birefringence effect, the fitting procedures of these parameterizations to experimental data, and the inferred crystal properties.

Abstract: Over the last 25 years, radiowave detection of neutrino-generated signals, using cold polar ice as the neutrino target, has emerged as perhaps the most promising technique for detection of extragalactic ultra-high energy neutrinos (corresponding to neutrino energies in excess of 0.01 Joules, or 1017 electron volts). During the summer of 2021 and in tandem with the initial deployment of the Radio Neutrino Observatory in Greenland (RNO-G), we conducted radioglaciological measurements at Summit Station, Greenland to refine our understanding of the ice target. We report the result of one such measurement, the radio-frequency electric field attenuation length $L_\alpha$. We find an approximately linear dependence of $L_\alpha$ on frequency with the best fit of the average field attenuation for the upper 1500 m of ice: $\langle L_\alpha \rangle = ( ( 1154 \pm 121) - ( 0.81 \pm 0.14) \, ( \nu /{\rm MHz}) ) \,{\rm m}$ for frequencies ν ∈ [145 − 350] MHz.

Abstract: Abstract Since summer 2021, the Radio Neutrino Observatory in Greenland (RNO-G) is searching for astrophysical neutrinos at energies $${>10}$$ > 10 PeV by detecting the radio emission from particle showers in the ice around Summit Station, Greenland. We present an extensive simulation study that shows how RNO-G will be able to measure the energy of such particle cascades, which will in turn be used to estimate the energy of the incoming neutrino that caused them. The location of the neutrino interaction is determined using the differences in arrival times between channels and the electric field of the radio signal is reconstructed using a novel approach based on Information Field Theory. Based on these properties, the shower energy can be estimated. We show that this method can achieve an uncertainty of 13% on the logarithm of the shower energy after modest quality cuts and estimate how this can constrain the energy of the neutrino. The method presented in this paper is applicable to all similar radio neutrino detectors, such as the proposed radio array of IceCube-Gen2.

4. Radio-frequency probes of Antarctic ice at South Pole

Abstract: Using hardware developed for the ARA (Askaryan Radio Array) particle astrophysics experiment, we herein report on the amplitude and temporal characteristics of polarized surface radar echo data collected in South Polar ice using radio sounding equipment with 0.5-ns echo-time sampling. We observe strong echoes at 6, 9.6, 13.9, 17, and 19 μs following vertical pulse emission from the surface, corresponding to reflectors in the upper half of the ice sheet. The synchronicity of those echoes for all broadcast azimuthal polarizations affirms the lack of observable birefringence over the upper half of the ice sheet. Of the five strongest echoes, three exhibit an evident amplitude correlation with the local surface ice flow direction, qualitatively consistent with measurements in East Antarctica. Combined with other radio echo sounding data, we conclude that observed birefringent asymmetries at South Pole are generated entirely in the lower half of the ice sheet. By contrast, birefringent asymmetries are observed at shallow depths in East Antarctica.

12. An experimental demonstration set-up for detecting potential temperature defects on harness of cables with reflectometry

Abstract: In a context of Reusable Launch Vehicles (RLV), preventive maintenance is the solution to ensure reliable and safe reuse of the system for extending its useful life. In particular, cables are critical components of the space launch system subject to harsh environmental conditions such as mechanical stress, heat, vibration etc., which can lead to severe damage and affect the overall functionality of the system. In [1], we proposed a monitoring system, based on electrical reflectometry technique, where embedded sensors are deployed on the harness of the vehicle. We showed, through numerical simulations based on a rough model that thermal defects can be detected. However, this model integrates only brutal temperature change and does not considers progressive temperature variations along the cable. In this study, we propose more accurate models, taking into account local thermal effect on the cable. We included in the ABCD frequency method a mesh description of the cable to allow a thinner description of the cable while considering a progressive temperature profile. We proposed a combination of a mesh description and the ABCD calculus method and optimized the meshs parameters to reduce side effects on simulations. Using a previously given law linking temperature variations and materials variation, we could generate the impact on reflectometry for each cell of the mesh and mitigate the unwanted reflections created by this new model. Then, two cases were considered. First, we focused on a dramatic drop of the temperature on a local part of the cable, for temperatures ranging from -50 C to -200 C. This can happen, for example, when the thermal protection around the ergol tanks is damaged and the cable is exposed to very low temperature. Second, we considered an important raise of the temperature of a part of a cable up to 180C, as it could happen with the presence of a hot spot near a reactor, for instance. For both cases, numerical simulations were conducted taking into account a cable network used for power distribution with the presence of local thermal defects in different places of the cable. We equipped the cable with temperature sensors and used a reflectometry measurement tool. We then measured TDR signals. The response of reflectometry sensors shows that hot and cold spots can be detected and located. To prove the validity of the proposed models, experimental test beds were set to reproduce the same scenario as in simulation. For low temperatures, we immerged part of a cable in a tank full of liquid nitrogen and made several reflectometry measurements with an electronic board similar to the one described in [1]. In addition, an oven was used to locally heat a portion of the cable. The experimental results showed great similarities between the simulations and the measurements. All this work provides an experimental validation of a newly designed model describing the cable damage due to local temperature change, and lays the proof of the capability of our reflectometry sensors to detect and locate such types of defects on a typical cable used in Space Launch Vehicles.

The lack of validated functional performance tests for patients with chronic disabilities may explain this defect. In this context, the Short and Fast Step Test (SFST) was recently developed and validated in healthy volunteers. Aim The purpose of this study was to investigate the safety, feasibility and reliability of the SFST, a functional test exploring anaerobic metabolism in coronary patients during cardiac rehabilitation. Design This study was a monocentric prospective study. Settings This study took place in the rehabilitation center of the University Hospital Center of Dijon, France. Population 44 coronary patients, addressed for a first cardiac rehabilitation, were included in this protocol. Methods All participants performed three SFST: T1 and T2 (including respiratory gas exchange) the first day of the program and T3 after 3 to 7 days. SFST consists of walking up and down a 17.5cm-high step as many times as possible in 1 minute. Safety was assessed by the percentage of patients who performed the SFST without reporting a fall, or muscular or cardiovascular events. Feasibility was evaluated by the percentage of patients who succeeded in doing the SFST. Reliability was assessed with the number of raised steps in same condition (T1-T3) and different conditions (T1-T2) using a 2-way intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Values were given with their 90% confidence interval [90%CI]. Results The safety was 95.2% [85.8;99.2] for T1, 88.1% [76.6;95.2] for T2 and 90.4% [79.5;96.7] for T3. 100% [93,1;100] of participants completed T1 and T2, 92.9% [82.6;98] T3. An ICC of 0.74 [0.60;0.84] was observed between T1 and T3 and of 0.87 [0.79;0.92] between T1 and T2. Conclusions This study demonstrates the good safety, feasibility and reliability of the SFST to assess anaerobic metabolism in coronary patients in a rehabilitation program. Clinical rehabilitation impact These results show that the SFST seems suitable for the evaluation of brief submaximal functional capacity in daily activities. It offers a real possibility to assess such capacity during the cardiac rehabilitation routine.

Abstract: Extremely low dose, fast human-screening systems constitute a vital instrument in a modern world under terrorist threats. Only X-ray scanners provide visualization of concealed items hidden under clothing or inside the body. However, existing systems are inadequate in many large-crowd scenarios (including public transport) because of restrictions on dose load per person. The main aim of this paper is to develop an alternative system that provides satisfactory control. X-ray counting with energy resolution is recognized as the most promising technique to achieve the maximum sensitivity of X-ray detection. Therefore, combining the high sensitivity of silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) to low-intensity light pulses with the high X-ray detection efficiency of modern fast inorganic scintillators, we are developing a prototype low-dose X-ray energy-resolved counting system for routine security purposes. Such an approach allows a reduction in the absorbed dose in a human body and can also improve the image quality for the typical doses currently used in the conventional X-ray systems. Moreover, a charge integration mode for high-intensity X-ray can extend the dynamic range of the system. In this paper, we present results obtained using a mature SiPM-based fast scintillation detector proof-of-concept prototype, incorporating an extremely low-dose X-ray scanner in counting mode, with energy discrimination.

Abstract: Summary Background In 2013, the interim analysis of the Protocol for Herceptin as Adjuvant therapy with Reduced Exposure (PHARE) trial could not show that 6 months of adjuvant trastuzumab was non-inferior to 12 months. Here, we report the planned final analysis based on the prespecified number of occurring events. Methods PHARE is an open-label, phase 3, non-inferiority randomised trial of patients with HER2-positive early breast cancer comparing 6 months versus 12 months of trastuzumab treatment concomitant with or following standard neoadjuvant or adjuvant chemotherapy. The study was undertaken in 156 centres in France. Eligible patients were women aged 18 years or older with non-metastatic, operable, histologically confirmed adenocarcinoma of the breast and either positive axillary nodes or negative axillary nodes but a tumour of at least 10 mm. Participants must have received at least four cycles of a chemotherapy for this breast cancer and have started receiving adjuvant trastuzumab-treatment. Eligible patients were randomly assigned to either 6 months or 12 months of trastuzumab therapy duration between the third and sixth months of adjuvant trastuzumab. The randomisation was stratified by concomitant or sequential treatment with chemotherapy, oestrogen receptor status, and centre. The primary objective was non-inferiority in the intention-to-treat population in the 6-month group in terms of disease-free survival with a prespecified hazard margin of 1·15. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT00381901. Findings 3384 patients were enrolled and randomly assigned to either 12 months (n=1691) or 6 months (n=1693) of adjuvant trastuzumab. One patient in the 12-month group and three patients in the 6-month group were excluded, so 1690 patients in each group were included in the intention-to-treat analysis. At a median follow-up of 7·5 years (IQR 5·3–8·8), 704 events relevant to disease-free survival were observed (345 [20·4%] in the 12-month group and 359 [21·2%] in the 6-month group). The adjusted hazard ratio for disease-free survival in the 12-month group versus the 6-month group was 1·08 (95% CI 0·93–1·25; p=0·39). The non-inferiority margin was included in the 95% CI. No differences in effects pertaining to trastuzumab duration were found in any of the subgroups. After the completion of trastuzumab treatment, rare adverse events occurred over time and the safety analysis remained similar to the previously published report. In particular, we found no change in the cardiac safety comparison, and only three additional cases in which the left ventricular ejection fraction decreased to less than 50% have been reported in the 12-month group. Interpretation The PHARE study did not show the non-inferiority of 6 months versus 12 months of adjuvant trastuzumab. Hence, adjuvant trastuzumab standard duration should remain 12 months. It offered a platform where theorists and experimentalists could work together to elucidate the potential impacts of the Belle II program, which includes a wide scope of physics topics: B physics, charm, τ , quarkonium physics, electroweak precision measurements, and dark sector searches. Kou et al. are coordinated by teams of theory and experiment conveners: WG1, Semileptonic and leptonic B Decays; WG2, Radiative and Electroweak Penguins; WG3, φ1 and φ2 (Time-Dependent CP Violation) Measurements; WG4, φ3 Measurement; WG5, Charmless Hadronic B Decay; WG6, Charm; WG7, Quarkonium(-like); WG8, τ and Low-Multiplicity Processes; WG9, New Physics. We organized workshops twice a year from 2014 until 2016, which moved from KEK in Japan to Europe and the Americas, gathering experts in the respective fields for discussions with Belle II members. One of the goals for B2TiP was to propose so-called “golden and silver channels”: we asked each working group to choose, among numerous possible measurements, those that would have the highest potential impact and to focus on them for the writeup. Theorists scrutinized the role of those measurements in terms of understanding the theory behind them, and estimated the theoretical uncertainties now achievable as well as prospects for the future. For flavor physics, having tight control of hadronic uncertainties is one of the most crucial aspects in the field, and this is considered an important criterion in determining the golden or silver channels. Experimentalists, on the other hand, investigated the expected improvements with data from Belle II. For the channels where the errors are dominated by statistical uncertainties, or where systematic errors are reducible, the errors can decrease rapidly as more data becomes available. The impact of the upgraded performance from Belle II is a crucial element in reducing the uncertainties: we therefore include the latest available studies of the detector efficiency using Monte Carlo simulated events.We list the golden and silver channel table in the introductory chapter, as a guide for the chapters that follow. This book is not a collection of reports based on talks given at the workshops. The working group conveners endeavored to construct a coherent document that can be used by Belle II collaborators, and others in the field of flavor physics, as a reference. Two books of a similar type have been produced in the past: The BaBar Book [1] and The Physics of the B Factories [2]. In order to avoid too much repetition with respect to those references, we refer to them wherever possible for introductory material. Abstract: This study examined the degree to which cultural fit (cultural congruity in combination with perception of the university environment) and the dimensional noncognitive processes of mentoring predicted college satisfaction and life satisfaction for 238 racial and ethnic minority undergraduates from two university contexts. Group differences as well as differences in strength of relationships emerged by site and mentor status. Perception of the university environment was the strongest positive predictor of college satisfaction, whereas cultural congruity was the strongest predictor of life satisfaction. Limitations, future research directions, and implications of the study’s findings are discussed.

Abstract: Resume Objectif De facon a prevenir la perte d’efficacite de la prevention secondaire a distance de la fin de la readaptation cardiaque, une experimentation d’une consultation multidisciplinaire de soutien en education therapeutique est proposee par une unite hospitaliere de readaptation cardiaque. Les differents aspects du mode de vie sont abordes : activite physique, nutrition, observance medicamenteuse, tabac. Ce travail vise a evaluer la satisfaction percue par les patients pour une telle consultation, car cette satisfaction participe a leur adhesion a une modification perenne du mode de vie. Methodes Etude retrospective basee sur un questionnaire telephonique comportant 8 questions fermees et permettant d’evaluer les attentes pour une telle consultation, ainsi que la satisfaction induite. Resultats Sur 60 patients eligibles, 48 ont pu etre interroges de facon complete. Concernant les attentes, 52 % des patients souhaitaient une telle consultation et 41 % reconnaissaient des difficultes a appliquer les recommandations. Concernant la satisfaction, elle etait de 92 % pour le fond (approche globale du mode de vie), et de 94 % pour la forme (pluridisciplinarite), avec dans 69 % des cas une adhesion amelioree a la prevention secondaire. Conclusion Ces resultats preliminaires positifs concernant la satisfaction incitent a developper de telles strategies de soutien en education therapeutique dont il faudra evaluer sur le long terme les impacts sur la morbi-mortalite cardiovasculaire.

Abstract: Background Although the initial anaerobic component of exercise adaptation is unavoidable, no specific functional test is available for use in routine non-sporting practice to evaluate it. Objective To assess the bioenergetic and biomechanical properties of the Short and Fast Step Test (SFST), which consists of walking up and down a step as many times as possible in 1 minute and to analyse its ability to explore the initial anaerobic component of effort in comparison to a reference self-paced step test. Methods Overall, 31 healthy subjects (19 women; mean [SD] age, 32.4 [10.2] years) completed a test–retest of a self-paced step test and the SFST, with pre- and post-test measurement of blood lactate concentration and continuous recording of VO2 and modelling of excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) of the quadriceps and mechanical power (estimated by the number of steps climbed and 3-D motion analysis). Results Both step tests were well tolerated. The reliability of the bioenergetics parameters, number of raised steps, mechanical power and NIRS tissue saturation index was good. Indirect mechanical power (estimated from number of steps) was correlated with direct power (computed from the centre of mass). Lactate accumulation was significantly increased during exercise with only the SFST (mean [SD] increase, 3.86 [3.26] mmol L−1 from resting values, P Conclusions SFST is feasible, well tolerated, reliable and responsive to explore a brief exercise involving anaerobic metabolism at submaximal intensity. The number of steps taken in 1 minute seems a suitable parameter for practical application.

Abstract: International audience; ObjectivesThere is ambiguity concerning the walk tests available for functional assessment of coronary patients, particularly for the walking speed. This study explores the psychometric properties of two walking tests, based on fixed-distance tests, at comfortable and fast velocity, in stabilized patients at the end of a cardiac rehabilitation program.MethodsAt a three-day interval 58 coronary patients (mean age of 64.85 ± 6.03 years, 50 men) performed three walk tests, the first two at a comfortable speed in a random order (6-minute walk test – 6MWT – and 400-metre comfortable walk test – 400mCWT) and the third at a brisk speed (200-metre fast walk test – 200mFWT). A modified Bruce treadmill test was associated at the end of the second phase. Monitored main parameters were: heart rate, walking velocity, VO2.ResultsTolerance to the 3 tests was satisfactory. The reliability of the main parameters was good (intraclass correlation coefficient > 0.8). The VO2 concerning 6MWT and 400mCWT were not significantly different (P = 0.33) and were lower to the first ventilatory threshold determined by the stress test (P < 0.001): 16.2 ± 3.0 vs. 16.5 ± 2.6 vs. 20.7 ± 5.1 mL·min−1·kg−1 respectively. The VO2 of the 200mFWT (20.2 ± 3.7) was not different from the first ventilatory threshold.Conclusions400mCWT and 200mFWT are feasible, well-tolerated and reliable. They explore two levels of effort intensity (lower and not different to the first ventilatory threshold respectively). 400mCWT is a possible alternative to 6MWT. Associated with 200mFWT it should allow a better measurement of physical capacities and better customization of exercise training.

25. Rehabilitación en la arteriopatía de los miembros inferiores

Abstract: La rehabilitacion en la arteriopatia de los miembros inferiores se basa en programas personalizados que asocian readaptacion al esfuerzo y educacion terapeutica. Aumenta las capacidades fisicas, sobre todo la distancia de la marcha, permite reanudar las actividades, reduce los factores de riesgo y mejora los frecuentes trastornos del estado de animo que se observan en estos pacientes. Mejora las anomalias fisiopatologicas, en especial el desequilibrio neurovegetativo y la disfuncion endotelial. Se recomienda un programa ambulatorio de al menos tres sesiones por semana durante 2-3 meses. La evaluacion funcional (pruebas de esfuerzo maximo, pruebas de marcha) permite adaptar el programa de readaptacion mejorando las capacidades oxidativas. La educacion terapeutica apunta a un cambio permanente de las costumbres nutricionales (dieta mediterranea), a estimular la actividad fisica, la abstinencia de tabaco y la observancia farmacologica, sin olvidar el patron psicologico y las condiciones socioeconomicas de cada paciente. Esta rehabilitacion se indica sobre todo cuando la expresion clinica de la claudicacion arterial se agrava, los factores de riesgo no estan controlados y existe un peligro de desinsercion sociolaboral. Puede servir como prueba terapeutica de las lesiones popliteas antes de una revascularizacion o completar este tratamiento invasivo en caso de necesidad. Representa una accion terapeutica intensiva que se justifica ante una enfermedad grave por su mortalidad cardiaca, vascular y cerebrovascular, y por su prevalencia creciente.

Abstract: The EAS Cherenkov array Tunka-133, with about 3 km 2 sensitive area, has been installed in the Tunka Valley, Siberia. The accessible energy range is 10 15 –10 18 eV. In this contribution, a description of the array and main results obtained so far are presented. A current update of the array includes the deployment of scintillation stations, radio antennas, as well as optical stations. The deployments of these optical stations are the first step towards Tunka-HiSCORE, a wide-angle, large field-of-view gamma-ray telescope.

27. Ventilatory adaptation to eccentric cycling in moderate to severe COPD patients

Abstract: Backgroung In moderate to severe COPD patients, ventilation adaptation to metabolic demand during concentric exercise (CONC) is often limited by dynamic hyperinflation that impedes tidal volume (Vt) to increase. According to its low metabolic cost, eccentric exercise (ECC) could be an alternative to CONC with these patients. Aims and objectives To compare ventilatory adaptation during CONC and EXC cycling in moderate to severe COPD patients. Methods On 5 separate days, 13 patients (FEV1: 42±9% pred) performed a symptom-limited incremental CONC cycle exercise test followed by four 30-min sessions of constant-load ECC cycling. Load of ECC exercise was increased by 50% at each session. Vt, breath frequency (BF) and several physiologic parameters were compared at the maximal common minute ventilation (V9E) observed during CONC and ECC (iso-V9E). Results Iso-V9E was 24.9±7.9 L.min -1 duringECC and 24.9±7.8 L.min -1 during CONC (61±21% of maximal estimated ventilation). The power outputs at isoV9E were 37±16 W and 104±18 W for CONC and ECC, respectively. At iso-V9E, Vt was 22% lower in ECC than in CONC (890±220 vs. 1080±320 mL; p =0.005) and BF was 24% higher (28.3±5.6 vs. 22.8±3.1 min -1 ; p 2 ) and Borg dyspnoea score were similar in both conditions (HR: 95.4±13.1 vs. 95.4±12.5 min -1 ; V9O 2 : 0.74±0.23 vs. 0.77±0.26 L; Borg: 2.4±2.4 vs. 1.7±0.9 in ECC and CONC, respectively; p>0.05). Conclusion At an identical V9E of about 60% of maximal estimated ventilation, patients with moderate to severe COPD have a 24% higher breathing frequency during ECC compared with CONC cycling. The mechanisms and consequences of this hyperpnoea deserve further studies.

Abstract: We have measured the first and second moments of the hadronic mass-squared distribution in B -> X_c l nu, for P(lepton) > 1.5 GeV/c. We find = 0.251 +- 0.066 GeV^2, < (M_X^2 -)^2 > = 0.576 +- 0.170 GeV^4, where M_D[Bar] is the spin-averaged D meson mass. From that first moment and the first moment of the photon energy spectrum in b -> s gamma, we find the HQET parameter lambda_1 (MS[Bar], to order 1/M^3 and beta_0 alpha_s^2) to be -0.24 +- 0.11 GeV^2. Using these first moments and the B semileptonic width, and assuming parton-hadron duality, we obtain |V_cb| = 0.0404 +- 0.0013., Comment: 11 pages postscript, also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS, submitted to PRL

Abstract: Using 4.8 fb$^{-1}$ of data taken with the CLEO II detector, the branching fraction for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay $D^+\to\pi^0\ell^+\nu$ measured relative to the Cabibbo favored decay $D^+\to\bar{K^0}\ell^+\nu$ is found to be $0.046\pm 0.014\pm 0.017$. Using $V_{cs}$ and $V_{cd}$ from unitarity constraints, we determine $| f_+^{\pi}(0)/f_+^K(0)|^2=0.9\pm 0.3\pm 0.3$ We also present a 90% confidence level upper limit for the branching ratio of the decay $D^+ \to \eta e^+\nu_e$ relative to that for $D^+ \to \pi^0 e^+\nu_e$ of 1.5.

Les preuves de ses impacts sur les capacites physiques, les facteurs de risque, la qualite de vie et la morbi-mortalite sont nombreuses. Malgre cela, il reste sous-utilise. La validation de moyens d’evaluation fonctionnelle (tels que les tests de marche), permettant de mieux indiquer et de mieux personnaliser les programmes, devrait en faciliter le developpement.

Abstract: The new array Tunka-133 started data taking at the end of 2009. The apparatus records the Cherenkov light pulse waveform of extensive air showers (EAS). It consists of 133 optical detectors deployed over an area of about 1 km 2 . About two million events have been collected during 286 hours of clean moonless nights in winter 2009-2010. Using these data, we present methods of primary cosmic particle parameter reconstruction for EAS with the core both inside and outside the array and give preliminary results.

Abstract: The changes in core-level electronic structure of In1−xSbx nano-clusters have been studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Though, clusters with mean composition InSb show shallow and deep core-level binding energies similar to those of bulk InSb, the Sb and In rich versions show a negative BE shift for the excess element and a positive shift for the minority element. The observed BE shifts have been explained considering a core and surface shell model for the structure of the clusters and possible surface atom core-level shifts.

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to determine the efficacy and safety of docetaxel plus continuous infusion of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in patients with metastatic breast cancer previously treated with anthracyclines. A total of 41 patients with histologically proven metastatic breast cancer and performance status 0-2, who had received at least one anthracycline-containing regimen, received docetaxel 85 mg m(-2) followed by continuous infusion of 5-FU 750 mg m(-2) day(-1) for 5 days every 3 weeks for up to eight cycles. All patients received corticosteroid premedication, but there was no prophylactic colony-stimulating factor support. The most frequent metastatic sites were the liver (61%), bone (29%), and lung (29%). All 41 patients were assessable for toxicity and 30 were eligible and assessable for efficacy. The objective response rate was 70.0% (95% CI: 53.6-86.4%) for the per protocol group and 53.7% (95% CI: 38.4-68.9%) for the intent-to-treat (ITT) population. For the ITT population, median duration of response was 8.4 months (95% CI: 6.7-12.2 months), median time to progression was 6.7 months (95% CI 5.5-8.6 months), and median survival was 17 months (95% CI: 12.3-not recorded months). Grade 3/4 neutropenia occurred in 54% of patients, with febrile neutropenia in 24% of patients and 5% of cycles, but infections were rare. Stomatitis was frequent, grade 3 in 24% of patients and grade 4 in one patient (2%), but manageable. Diarrhoea was rare, grade 3 in 7% of patients and 1% of cycles. Other grade 3/4 nonhaematological toxicities were infrequent. In conclusion, this docetaxel/5-FU regimen is highly active and well tolerated in patients with anthracycline-pretreated metastatic breast cancer. The efficacy is particularly promising, as one-third of patients were either second-line and/or anthracycline-resistant/refractory.

Abstract: We describe the risk factors and microbiological findings of an outbreak of Clostridium difficile (CD)-related diarrhoea in the Medical Oncology Department of the Curie Institute. Screening for CD in stools was performed on 59 patients with diarrhoea and 146 patients without diarrhoea. Toxin secretion, serotyping (enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay) and genotyping (AP-polymerase chain reaction) were performed on 39 CD strains from 32 patients. Abstract: Using 13.7 $fb^{-1}$ of data recorded by the CLEO detector at CESR, we report evidence for two new charmed baryons: one decaying into $\Xi_c^{0 \prime}\pi^+$ with the subsequent decay $\Xi_c^{0 \prime} \to \Xi_c^0 \gamma$, and its isospin partner decaying into $\Xi_c^{+ \prime} \pi^-$ followed by $\Xi_c^{+\prime} \to \Xi_c^+\gamma$. We measure the following mass differences for the two states: $M(\Xi_c^0 \gamma \pi^+)-M(\Xi_c^0)$=318.2+-1.3+-2.9 MeV, and $M(\Xi_c^+ \gamma \pi^-)-M(\Xi_c^+)$=324.0+-1.3+-3.0 MeV. We interpret these new states as the $J^P = 1/2^- \Xi_{c1}$ particles, the charmed-strange analogs of the $\Lambda_{c1}^+(2593)$.

Abstract: In a sample of $9.66\times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs collected with the CLEO detector we make the first observation of B decays to an $\eta_c$ and a kaon. We measure branching fractions $BR(B^+\to\eta_c K^+) = (0.69 + 0.26 - 0.21 +- 0.08 +- 0.20)\times 10^{-3}$ and $BR(B^0\to\eta_c K^0) = (1.09 + 0.55 - 0.42 +- 0.12 +- 0.31)\times 10^{-3}$, where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is from the $\eta_c$ branching fraction uncertainty. From these we extract the $\eta_c$ decay constant in the factorization approximation, $f_{\eta_c} = 335 +- 75$ MeV. We also search for B decays to a $\chi_{c0}$ and a kaon. No evidence for a signal is found and we set 90% CL upper limits: $BR(B^+\to\chi_{c0} K^+) < 4.8\times 10^{-4}$ and $BR(B^0\to\chi_{c0} K^0) < 5.0\times 10^{-4}$.

Abstract: We present a search for direct CP violation in B{sup {+-}}{yields}J/{psi}K{sup {+-}} and B{sup {+-}}{yields}{psi}(2S)K{sup {+-}} decays. In a sample of 9.7x10{sup 6} BB meson pairs collected with the CLEO detector, we have fully reconstructed 534 B{sup {+-}}{yields}J/{psi} K{sup {+-}} and 120 B{sup {+-}}{yields}{psi}(2 S)K{sup {+-}} decays with very low background. We have measured the CP -violating charge asymmetry to be [+1.8{+-}4.3(stat){+-}0. 4(syst)]% for B{sup {+-}}{yields}J/{psi}K{sup {+-}} and [+2.0{+-}9.1(stat){+-}1. 0(syst)]% for B{sup {+-}}{yields}{psi}(2S)K{sup {+-}} . Abstract: The alloying behaviour of antimony molecules Sb4 into nanometre size indium clusters deposited on amorphous carbon has been studied by transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction for morphological and structural characterizations, and by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy for analysis of composition. First, large indium clusters containing about 1700 atoms (mean diameter = 4.4 nm) formed by the gas aggregation technique in a thermal source are deposited on amorphous carbon. Nucleation and growth mechanisms lead to the formation of indium particles randomly dispersed on the substrate. Then antimony molecules evaporated at various thicknesses are deposited on to the indium aggregates. These two successive depositions have been performed at room temperature. A dissolution of antimony atoms into the indium particles takes place and InSb compound is successfully formed. Abstract: We have searched for the rare decays of the eta prime meson to e+ e- eta, e+ e- pizero, e+ e- gamma, and e mu in hadronic events at the CLEO II detector. The search is conducted on 4.80 fb^-1 of e+ e- collisions at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. We find no signal in any of these modes, and set 90% confidence level upper limits on their branching fractions of 2.4 X 10^-3, 1.4 X 10^-3, 0.9 X 10^-3, and 4.7 X 10^-4, respectively. We also investigate the Dalitz plot of the common decay of the eta prime to pi+ pi- eta. We fit the matrix element with the Particle Data Group parameterization and find Re(alpha) = -0.021 +- 0.025, where alpha is a linear function of the kinetic energy of the eta.

Abstract: Using 13.7 fb(-1) of data recorded by the CLEO detector at Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we report evidence of two new charmed baryons: one decaying into Xi(0')(c)pi(+) with the subsequent decay Xi(0')(c)-->Xi(0)(c)gamma, and its isospin partner decaying into Xi(+')(c)pi(-) followed by Xi(+')(c)-->Xi(+)(c)gamma. We measure the following mass differences for the two states: M(Xi(0)(c)gammapi(+))-M(Xi(0)(c)) = 318.2+/-1.3+/-2.9 MeV and M(Xi(+)(c)gammapi(-))-M(Xi(+)(c)) = 324.0+/-1.3+/-3.0 MeV. We interpret these new states as the J(P) = 1 / 2(-) Xi(c1) particles, the charmed-strange analogs of the Lambda(+)(c1)(2593).

Abstract: Alloying of gold atoms into nanometer-sized antimony clusters deposited on highly oriented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG) has been studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for morphological and structural characterisations and by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) for analysis of composition. First, large antimony clusters (≈5.4 nm) generated by the gas aggregation technique in a thermal source were deposited on HOPG. These antimony clusters diffused on graphite and formed, by collision and irreversible sticking, ramified islands the density of which can be predicted, prior to deposition, with suitable cluster flux and substrate temperature. Then, the gold atoms were evaporated at various mean thicknesses on the same Sb N –HOPG substrate. For this post-deposition of gold, the morphology of the deposit was quite different, depending on the evaporation method (Knudsen cell heated by electron bombardment or spiral tungsten filament heated by the Joule effect): ramified islands of Sb–Au alloys plus gold supported particles when using the first method and only ramified Sb–Au islands for the second one. In this paper, we give an explanation of these two different morphologies and we study the alloy formation versus the gold content.

Abstract: The decay {tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}K{sup {asterisk}{minus}}{eta}{nu}{sub {tau}} has been observed with the CLEOthinspthinspII detector. The K{sup {asterisk}{minus}} is reconstructed in two decay channels, K{sup {asterisk}{minus}}{r_arrow}K{sub S}{pi}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow} {pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}} and K{sup {asterisk}{minus}}{r_arrow}K{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup 0} . The {eta} is reconstructed from the decay {eta}{r_arrow}{gamma}{gamma} . The measured branching fraction is B({tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}K{sup {asterisk}{minus}} {eta}{nu}{sub {tau}})=(2.9{plus_minus} 0.8{plus_minus}0.4){times}10{sup {minus}4} . We also measure the inclusive branching fractions without requiring the K{sup {asterisk}} resonance, B({tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}K{sub S}{pi}{sup {minus}}{eta}{nu}{sub {tau}})=(1.10 {plus_minus}0.35{plus_minus}0.11){times}10{sup {minus}4} and B({tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}K{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup 0}{eta}{nu}{sub {tau}})=(1.77 {plus_minus}0.56{plus_minus}0.71){times}10{sup {minus}4} . Abstract: We report the first observation of B{r_arrow}{eta}{sup {prime}}X transitions with high momentum {eta}{sup {prime}} mesons. We observe 39.0{plus_minus}11.6 B decay events with 2.0{lt}p{sub {eta}{sup {prime}}}{lt}2.7 GeV/c , the high momentum region where background from b{r_arrow}c processes is suppressed. We discuss the physical interpretation of the signal, including the possibility that it is due to b{r_arrow}sg{sup {asterisk}} transitions. Given that interpretation, we find B(B{r_arrow}{eta}{sup {prime}}X{sub s} )=[6.2{plus_minus}1.6(stat){plus_minus} 1.3(syst){sup +0.0}{sub {minus}1.5} (bkg)]{times}10{sup {minus}4} for 2.0{lt}p{sub {eta}{sup {prime}}}{lt}2.7 GeV/c . {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society }

Abstract: We have observed the decay ${B}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\overline{D}}^{0}{K}^{+}$, using $3.3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. We find the ratio of branching fractions $R\ensuremath{\equiv}B({B}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\overline{D}}^{0}{K}^{+})/B({B}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\overline{D}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.055\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.014\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.005$.

Abstract: We have studied semileptonic B meson decays with a p-wave charm meson in the final state using 3.29×10^6 BB events collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron-Positron Storage Ring. We find a value for the exclusive semileptonic product branching fraction B(B^-→D_1^0l^-ν _l)B(D_1^0→D^(*+)π^-) = (0.373±0.085±0.052±0.024)% and an upper limit for B(B^-→D_2^(*0)l^-ν_l)B(D_2^(*0)→D^(*+)π^-)

Abstract: Using 3.1 fb$^{-1}$ of data accumulated at the $\Upsilon$(4S) by the CLEO-II detector, corresponding to 3.3 million $B\bar{B}$ pairs, we have searched for the color-suppressed $B$ hadronic decay processes: $\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 (D^{*0}) X^0$, where $X^0$ is a light neutral meson $\pi^0$, $\rho^0$, $\eta$, $\eta'$ or $\omega$. No obvious signal is observed. We set 90 % C.L. upper limits on these modes, varying from $1.2 \times 10^{-4}$ for $\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 \pi^0$ to $1.9 \times 10^{-3}$ for $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*0} \eta'$.
