Regressions of private-sector macroeconomic forecast revisions on monetary policy surprises often produce coefficients with signs opposite to standard macroeconomic models. The “Fed information effect” argues these puzzling results are due to monetary policy surprises revealing Fed private information. We show they are also consistent with a “Fed response to news” channel, where both the Fed and professional forecasters respond to incoming economic news. We present new evidence challenging the Fed information effect and supporting the Fed response to news channel, including: regressions that control for economic news, our own survey of professional forecasters, and financial market responses to FOMC announcements. Monetary policy affects financial markets and the broader economy in part by changing the risk appetite of investors. This article provides new evidence for this so-called risk-taking channel of monetary policy by revisiting and extending event-study analysis of Federal Open Market Committee announcements. We document significant effects of unexpected monetary policy changes on risk indicators drawn from equity, fixed-income, credit, and foreign exchange markets. We develop a new index of risk appetite based on the common component of these indicators. Surprise monetary easing leads to strong and persistent increases in our index, and vice versa for tightening surprises, consistent with the view that monetary policy affects asset prices in large part through its effects on risk appetite. We discuss the implications of the risk-taking channel for monetary policy transmission, optimal monetary policy, and financial stability.

Nutrition support is associated with improved survival and nonelective hospital readmission rates among malnourished medical inpatients; however, limited evidence supporting dietary counseling is available. We intend to determine the effect of dietary counseling with or without oral nutrition supplementation (ONS), compared with standard care, on hospitalized adults who are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition.We searched MEDLINE/PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Scopus, The Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar for studies listed from January 1, 2011, to August 31, 2021. Meta-analysis was performed to obtain pooled risk ratios (RRs) and 95% CIs to estimate the effect. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) system was used to assess the certainty of the evidence.Sixteen studies were identified. Compared with standard care, dietary counseling with or without ONS probably does not reduce inpatient rates of 30-day mortality (RR = 1.24; 0.60-2.55; IThere is an increase in the certainty of evidence regarding the positive impact of dietary counseling on outcomes. Future studies should standardize and provide details/frequencies of counseling methods and ONS adherence to determine dietary counseling effectiveness.

First and foremost, we note that the aim of our paper is to report a methodology to diagnose topological (semi)metals using magnetic quantum oscillations. Thus far, such diagnosis has been based on the phase offset of quantum oscillations, which is extracted from a "Landau fan plot". A thorough analysis of the Onsager-Lifshitz-Roth quantization rules has shown that the famous $\pi$-phase shift can equally well arise from orbital- or spin magnetic moments in topologically trivial systems with strong spin-orbit coupling or small effective masses. Therefore, the "Landau fan plot" does not by itself constitute a proof of a topologically nontrivial Fermi surface. In the paper at hand, we report an improved analysis method that exploits the strong energy-dependence of the effective mass in linearly dispersing bands. This leads to a characteristic temperature dependence of the oscillation frequency which is a strong indicator of nontrivial topology, even for multi-band metals with complex Fermi surfaces. Three materials, Cd$_3$As$_2$, Bi$_2$O$_2$Se and LaRhIn$_5$ served as test cases for this method. Physical review / B 106(21), 214516 (2022). doi:10.1103/PhysRevB.106.214516, Superconductivity in binary ruthenium pnictides occurs proximal to and upon suppression of a nonmagnetic ground state, preceded by a pseudogap phase associated with Fermi surface instability, and its critical temperature, $T_c$, is maximized around the pseudogap quantum critical point. By analogy with isoelectronic iron-based counterparts, antiferromagnetic fluctuations became “usual suspects” as putative mediators of superconducting pairing. Here we report on a high-temperature local symmetry breaking in RuP, the nonsuperconducting parent of the maximum-$T_c$ branch of these novel superconductors, revealed by combined nanostructure-sensitive powder and single-crystal x-ray total scattering analyses. Large local distortions of Ru chains associated with orbital-charge trimerization, further assembled into hexamers, exist above the two-stage electronic transition in RuP. In the pseudogap regime the precursors order with distortions retaining their strength, whereas they acquire spin-singlet characteristics which dramatically enhances the distortion as the nonmagnetic ground state establishes. The precursors enable the nonmagnetic ground state and presumed complex oligomerization, and the relevance of pseudogap fluctuations for superconductivity emerges as a distinct prospect. As a transition metal system in which partial d-manifold filling combined with high crystal symmetry promotes electronic instabilities, this represents a further example of local electronic precursors underpinning the macroscopic collective behavior of quantum materials., Published by Inst., Woodbury, NY

The rare-earth monopnictide (REM) family, which hosts magnetic ground states with extreme magnetoresistance, has established itself as a fruitful playground for the discovery of interesting topological phases. Here, by using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy complemented by first-principles density functional-theory based modeling, we examine the evolution of the electronic structure of the candidate REM Dirac semimetal NdSb across the magnetic transition. A complex angel-wing-like band structure near the zone center and three arc-like features at the zone corner have been observed. This dramatic reconstruction of the itinerant bands around the zone center is shown to be driven by the magnetic transition: Specifically,, the Nd 5d electron band backfolds at the Gamma point and hybridizes with the Sb 5p hole bands in the antiferromagnetic phase. Patients with foregut tumors are at high risk of malnutrition. Nutrition care focuses on identifying individuals at risk of malnutrition and optimizing nutrient intake to promote the maintenance of body weight and lean body mass. This multi-center prospective, longitudinal study audited nutrition care practices related to screening for risk of malnutrition (Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment Short Form; PG-SGA SF), and nutrition interventions prescribed (route; adequacy of energy and protein intakes). Audits occurred at four time periods: baseline (before treatment) and at 2, 4, and 6 months after starting cancer treatment; 170 patients (esophageal (ESO; n = 51); head and neck (HN; n = 119)) were enrolled. Nutrition risk (PG-SGA SF score ≥ 4) was prevalent at every time period: HN (baseline: 60%; 6 months 66%) and ESO (77%; 72%). Both groups had significant (p < 0.001) weight losses over the 6 month audit period (HN = 13.2% ESO = 11.4%). Enteral nutrition (EN) was most likely to be prescribed at 2 months for HN and at 4 and 6 months for ESO. Target prescribed energy and protein intakes were not met with any nutrition intervention; although adequacy was highest for those receiving EN. Nutrition care practices differed for HN and ESO cancers and there may be time points when additional nutrition support is needed.

We perform nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of the oxygen-17 Knight shifts for Sr2RuO4, while subjected to uniaxial stress applied along [100] direction. The resulting strain is associated with a strong variation of the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the inferred magnetic response. A quasiparticle description based on density-functional theory calculations, supplemented by many-body renormalizations, is found to reproduce our experimental results, and highlights the key role of a van-Hove singularity. The Fermi-liquid coherence scale is shown to be tunable by strain, and driven to low values as the associated Lifshitz transition is approached. Publisher PDF

We report anisotropic resistivity measurements of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeRh$_2$As$_2$ in magnetic fields up to 16 T and temperatures down to 0.35 K. The measured CeRh$_2$As$_2$ resistivity shows a signature corresponding to the suggested quadrupole density wave order state at $T_0 \sim$ 0.5 K for both measured directions. For a magnetic field applied along the tetragonal $a$ axis, $T_0$ is enhanced with magnetic field reaching $\sim$1.75 K at 16 T. Further, a magnetic field-induced transition occurs at $B_m \sim $ 8.1 T corresponding to a change to a new broken symmetry state. For a magnetic field applied along the $c$ axis, $T_0$ is suppressed below our base temperature $\sim$0.35 K by $B \sim$ 4.5 T, a field close to the previously reported field-induced transition within the superconducting state suggested to be from an even-parity to an odd-parity state. Our results indicate that the multiple superconducting phases in CeRh$_2$As$_2$ are intimately tied to the suppression of the proposed quadrupole-density-wave phase at $T_0$., Comment: 6 pages and 5 figures

Background Multimorbidity is highly prevalent among older adults and associated with a shorter life expectancy. Many guidelines recommend tailoring preventive care of multimorbid people according to life expectancy. Indeed, patients with a relatively short life expectancy might not have the time to benefit from a preventive care intervention. Our objective was therefore to develop and internally validate a life expectancy estimator for older multimorbid adults. Methods We analysed data of the OPERAM (OPtimising thERapy to prevent Avoidable hospital admissions in Multimorbid older people) cohort study in Bern, Switzerland. 822 hospitalized participants aged 70 years old or more, with multimorbidity (3 or more chronic medical conditions), and polypharmacy (use of 5 drugs or more for >30 days) were included. Our main outcome was time to all-cause mortality assessed during 3 years of follow-up. Candidate predictors included demographic variables (age, sex), clinical characteristics (Charlson-Comorbidity-Index, number of drugs, body mass index, weight loss), smoking, functional status variables (Barthel-Index, falls, nursing home residence), and hospitalization. We internally validated and optimism corrected the model using bootstrapping techniques. We transformed the 3-year mortality prognostic index into a life expectancy estimator using the Gompertz survival function. Results At baseline, the participants (58% men) had a median age of 79 years (min: 70; max: 99). They took daily a median of 10 chronic medications (min: 5; max 38). During 3 years of follow-up, 292 participants (36%) died. The analysis is ongoing and results will be presented at the congress. Conclusions A life expectancy estimator eventually helps personalising care to prevent under- and overuse of preventive care in the growing older population. Key messages

Despite intense experimental efforts, the nature of the unconventional superconducting order parameter of UTe$_2$ remains elusive. This puzzle stems from different reported numbers of superconducting transitions at ambient pressure, as well as a complex pressure-temperature phase diagram. To bring new insights into the superconducting properties of UTe$_2$, we measured the heat capacity and electrical resistivity of single crystals under compressive uniaxial stress $\sigma$ applied along different crystallographic directions. We find that the critical temperature $T_{\rm c}$ of the single observed bulk superconducting transition decreases with $\sigma$ along $[100]$ and $[110]$ but increases with $\sigma$ along $[001]$. Aside from its effect on $T_{\rm c}$, we notice that $c$-axis stress leads to a significant piezoresistivity, which we associate with the shift of the zero-pressure resistivity peak at $T^\star \approx 15\, \rm K$ to lower temperatures under stress. Finally, we show that an in-plane shear stress $\sigma_{xy}$ does not induce any observable splitting of the superconducting transition over a stress range of $\sigma_{xy}\approx 0.17 \, \rm GPa$. This result suggests that the superconducting order parameter of UTe$_2$ may be single-component at ambient pressure.

Generating long-lived mucosal and systemic antibodies through respiratory immunization with protective antigens encapsulated in nanoscale biodegradable particles could potentially decrease or eliminate the incidence of many infectious diseases, but requires the incorporation of a suitable mucosal immunostimulant. We previously found that respiratory immunization with a model protein antigen (LPS-free OVA) encapsulated in PLGA 50:50 nanoparticles (~380 nm diameter) surface-modified with complement peptide-derived immunostimulant 02 (CPDI-02; formerly EP67) through 2 kDa PEG linkers increases mucosal and systemic OVA-specific memory T-cells with long-lived surface phenotypes in young, naïve female C57BL/6 mice. Here, we determined if respiratory immunization with LPS-free OVA encapsulated in similar PLGA 50:50 microparticles (~1 μm diameter) surface-modified with CPDI-02 (CPDI-02-MP) increases long-term OVA-specific mucosal and systemic antibodies. We found that, compared to MP surface-modified with inactive, scrambled scCPDI-02 (scCPDI-02-MP), intranasal administration of CPDI-02-MP in 50 μL sterile PBS greatly increased titers of short-term (14 days post-immunization) and long-term (90 days post-immunization) antibodies against encapsulated LPS-free OVA in nasal lavage fluids, bronchoalveolar lavage fluids, and sera of young, naïve female C57BL/6 mice with minimal lung inflammation. Thus, surface modification of ~1 μm biodegradable microparticles with CPDI-02 is likely to increase long-term mucosal and systemic antibodies against encapsulated protein antigen after respiratory and possibly other routes of mucosal immunization.
