Abstract: The aim of the SCINTIRAD experiment is to determine the radio-response of 188Rhenium (Re) in in vitro cells and the biodistribution in different organs of in vivo mice, and subsequently to assess the therapeutic effect on liver tumours induced in mice. Both the γ- and β- emissions of 188Re have been exploited in the experiment. The in vivo biodistribution in mice was studied also with a γ-camera using different parallel hole collimators. In the 188Re spectrum, while the 155 keV γ-peak is useful for imaging, the photons emitted at larger energies and the β-particles act as noise in the image reconstruction. The γ-cameras previously used to image biodistributions obtained with 99Tc are, therefore, not optimized for use with 188Re. A new setup of the γ-camera has been studied for 188Re: 66×66 YAP:Ce crystals (0.6×0.6×10 mm3, 5 μm optical insulation) guarantee a FOV of 40×40 mm2, a Hamamatsu R2486 PSPMT, 3 in. diameter, converts their light into an electrical signal and allows reconstructing the spatial coordinates of the light spot; incoming photon directions are selected through a lead collimator with 1.5 mm diameter hexagonal holes, 0.18 mm septa, 40 mm thickness. Using this setup, results have been obtained both with 99Tc filled and 188Re filled capillaries and wells. The energy spectrum of the collected photons and the spatial resolutions obtainable with the 188Re source will be presented.

Abstract: A determination of the partial width Γc̄ of the Z0 boson into charm quark pairs is presented, based on a total sample of 36 900 Z0 hadronic decays measured with the DELPHI detector at the LEP collider. The production rate of cc events is derived from the inclusive analysis of charged pions coming from the decay of charmed meson D*+-→D0π+ and D*-→D̄0π- where the π± is constrained by kinematics to have a low pT with respect to the jet axis. The probability to procedure these π± from D*± decay in cc events is taken to be 0.31±0.05 as measured at √S = 10.55 GeV. The measured relative partial width Γ∞/Γh = 0.162± 0.030(stat.) ± 0.050(syst.) is in good agreement with the standard model value of 0.171. Abstract: The recent development of the LaBr3(Ce) crystals makes very attractive their application as a system of gamma imaging for SPET applications mainly due to their excellent scintillation properties. In this work, we use Monte Carlo simulations, in order to model the optical behavior of three continuous crystal configurations. Our goal is a better understanding of the intrinsic properties of a gamma camera based on LaBr3(Ce) crystals, coupled to a position sensitive photomultiplier tube. To this aim, the spatial and energy resolutions obtainable from optimum photodetection conditions are investigated.

Abstract: Dual-energy mammographic imaging experimental tests have been performed using a compact dichromatic imaging system based on a conventional x-ray tube, a mosaic crystal, and a 384-strip silicon detector equipped with full-custom electronics with single photon counting capability. For simulating mammal tissue, a three-component phantom, made of Plexiglass, polyethylene, and water, has been used. Images have been collected with three different pairs of x-ray energies: 16-32 keV, 18-36 keV, and 20-40 keV. A Monte Carlo simulation of the experiment has also been carried out using the MCNP-4C transport code. The Alvarez-Macovski algorithm has been applied both to experimental and simulated data to remove the contrast between two of the phantom materials so as to enhance the visibility of the third one.

Abstract: We present a search for the third generation up type quark t and a possible fourth down type quark b' in hadronic Z0 decays observed in DELPHI at the LEP collider. For any scenario with a decay through the charged current or into a charged Higgs with a mass at least 6 GeV/c2 below the t and 3 GeVc2 below the b' mass, we set a lower limit for the t quark mass at 44.0 GeV/c2 and for the b' mass at 44.5 GeV/c2. For specific scenarios the mass limits are slightly higher, e.g. for charged current decays the limits are 44.5 and 45.0 GeV/c2 respectively, where all limits are given at a 95% confidence level. © 1990., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract: Measurements are presented of the cross section ratios Rℓ = σℓ(e+e-→ℓ+ℓ -)/σhh(e+e-→hadrons) for ℓ = e, μ and τ using data taken from a scan around the Z0. The results are Re = (5.09±0.32±0.18)%, Rμ = (4.96±0.35±0.17)% and Rτ,=(4.72±0.38± 0.29)% where, for the ratio Re, the t-channel contribution has been subtracted. These results are consistent with the hypothesis of lepton universality and test this hypothesis at the energy scale s ∼ 8300 GeV2. The absolute cross sections σℓ(e+e-→ℓ +ℓ-) have also been measured. From the cross sections the leptonic partial widths Γe = (83.2±3.0±2.4) MeV, (ΓeΓμ) 1/2=(84.6±3.0±2.4) MeV and (ΓeΓτ) 1/2=(82.6±3.3±3.2) MeV have been extracted. Assuming lepton universality the ratio Γℓ/Γh=(4.89±0.20± 0.12) × 10-2 was obtained, together with Γℓ=(83.6±1.8±2.2) MeV. The number of light neutrino species is determined to be Nv=3.12±0.24±0.25. Abstract: A prototype of a combined CT-SPECT tomograph for breast cancer study has been developed and evaluated. It allows to perform scintimammography and X-ray CT in the same geometrical conditions. The CT system is based on a quasi-monochromatic beam tuned at 28 keV and an array of ultra fast ceramic scintillators coupled to photodiodes whilst the SPECT system is based on two scintillator matrices coupled to position sensitive photomultipliers. CT and SPECT sinograms of a test phantom were recorded and reconstruted with both modalities. Image fusion of CT and SPECT images was then performed. The developed CT-SPECT prototype is able to detect a region of interest of 1 cm3, with a 10:1 tumour/background concentration ratio, within an object having a diameter of 8 cm. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. 12. A New Large-Acceptance and High-Efficiency Neutron Detector for Missing-Mass Studies

Abstract: A large-acceptance and high-efficiency neutron detector is described. The sensitive surface and volume of the detector are 2.16 m2 and 0.78 m3, respectively. The detector consists of twenty-four elements of plastic scintillator, each having dimensions (100×18×18) cm3. The large volume of scintillator, in the particular geometrical arrangement chosen, allows a mean detection efficiency of about 25% in the range (70÷390) MeV neutron kinetic energy for a laboratory solid angle of 0.14 sr at 4 m radial distance. With the techniques adopted, calibrations with charged particles can be easily performed in a few hours using a low beam intensity. An interesting features of this instrument is the accuracy achieved in locating incident particles, which is ±1.4 cm for charged particles, and ±2.5 cm for neutrons. The accuracies achieved for the time-of-flight measurement are ±0.35 ns for charged particles and ±0.7 ns for neutrons. With these resolutions in the neutron time of flight and angle, the uncertainty in the missing mass is ±4 MeV for η, ±10 MeV for ω, and ±15 MeV for ϕ mesons.

Abstract: The observation of 21 K + K − pairs in 38 hadron pair events produced at 1.5, 1.6, and 1.7 GeV total centre-of-mass energies in e + e − annihilations, establishes that time-like photons produce K pairs and π pairs with comparable rates in this energy range. The K-meson electromagnetic form factor at a mean s -value of 2.4 GeV 2 is measured to be | F K | = 0.50±0.08. The number of e + e − pairs observed in the same angular and energy range is 5148.

Abstract: A study of the timelike reaction e+e-→μ∓μ± and of its comparison with the spacelike dominated reaction e+e−→e±e± allows us to establish the validity of QED in terms of production angular distributions, absolute rates, energy dependence and angular correlations between the pair of final-state leptons, in two very different ranges of invariant four-momentum transfer. No sign of QED break is detected in the electromagnetic interaction of leptons and the muon behaves like a heavy electron, within the accuracy of the present investigation.

Abstract: 49 e+e− non-collinear, non-coplanar events have been observed in a study of 1824 e+e− interactions at total centre-of-mass energies from 1.6 GeV to 2.0 GeV. The inadequacy of the peaking approximation in radiative corrections is measured to be (2.8 ± 0.4)%, in these experimental conditions of observation.

Abstract: A large electromagnetic shower detector for identification and energy measurements of γ-rmrays (between 150 and 1600 MeV) and electrons (between 400 and 1100 MeV), in the presence of high pion background, is described. The detector is based on the principle of simultaneous measurement of the spatial development of the electromagnetic cascade and of its energy release. It consists of 1) two six-gap thin-plate spark chambers for the reconstruction of the incoming particle trajectories; and 2) nine elements, each made of a lead foil, a spark chamber, and a plastic scintillator, all sandwiched together; here the shower development is studied. When used for γ-detection, a 0.5 cm Pb foil is placed in front of the thin-plate spark chambers, in order to allow the detection of the γ-conversion process and the identification of the γ-direction. The dimensions of the detector are 60 x 120 cm 2 front face, and 50 cm depth along the electromagnetic shower development. A pion rejection power of the order 5 x 10 −4 between 400 and 1100 MeV, for electron efficiencies varying from 70% to 80%, is obtained. The pion rejection efficiency in the γ-case is highly improved by the anticoincidence efficiency factor, while the γ-detection efficiency depends on the precision required in the reconstruction of the γ-ray direction. The γ-ray and electron energy resolution is about ±15%.

Abstract: Data from deep inelastic scattering of 200 GeV muons on a carbon target with squared four-momentum transfer 52 GeV2≤Q2≤200 GeV2 were analysed in the region of the Bjorken variable close tox=1, which is the kinematic limit for scattering on a free nucleon. At this value ofx, the carbon structure function is found to beF2C≈1.2·10−4. Thex dependence of the structure function forx>0.8 is well described by an exponentialF2C∞exp(−sx) withs=16.5±0.6.

Abstract: A search for the neutral Higgs boson in Z0-decays has been performed using the DELPHI detector at the Large Electron Positron collider (LEP) at CERN. We looked for the decay of Z0 into a neutral Higgs particle and a pair of fermions. No events fulfilled the criteria for H0-production. Our results, which are based on an integrated luminosity of 530 nb-1, exclude a minimal Standard Model Higgs boson with a mass in the range 210 MeV/c2 to 14 GeV/c2 at 95% confidence level., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract: A transputer system was used for fast 3-D image reconstruction in 3-D PET (positron emission tomography). The optimization of the algorithm (written in Occam language) and its parallelization on the transputer system for its use in the HISPET (high spatial resolution PET) project are discussed. It is projected that a 100-transputer machine would suffice in processing process online data at approximately=10 kHz for a matrix volume of 128*128*128 voxels, i.e. at a rate which is one-tenth of the maximum acquisition rate for the HISPET project. >

Abstract: Hadronic decays of Z 0 bosons are studied in the Delphi detector. Global event variables and singel particles inclusive distributions are compared with QCD-based predictions. The mean charged multiplicity is found to be 20.6±1.0 (stat+syst). The mean values of the sphericity, aplanarity, thrust, minor value, p in T and p out T are compared with values found at lower energy e + e − colliders.

Abstract: Using a data sample corresponding to 10 000 hadronic Z0 decays, we have searched for the production of sleptons and gauginos in the two-prong decays of Z0. No candidate remains after straightforward selections. For neutralinos, we use selection methods developed in our previous search for neutral Higgs particles. Abstract: Using a sample of Z0's corresponding to about 12 000 events, we have searched for the production of charged scalars, primarily charged Higgs particles, decaying into c̄scs̄, τν+jets, and τντν. The average detection efficiency is 20%. No candidate was found in the leptonic modes. Abstract: A measurement of the cross section for e+e-→ hadrons using 11 000 hadronic decays of the Z boson at ten different center-of-mass energies is presented. A three-parameter fit gives the following values for the Z mass MZ, the total width ΓZ, the product of the electronic and hadronic partial widths ΓeΓh, and the unfolded pole cross section σ0: MZ = 91.171 ± 0.030 (stat.) ± 0.030 (beam) GeV, ΓZ = 2.511 ± 0.065 GeV, ΓeΓh = 0.148 ± 0.006 (stat.) ± 0.004 (syst.) GeV2, σ0 = 41.6 ± 0.7 (stat.) ± 1.1 (syst.) nb, Good agreement with the predictions of the standard model is observed. From a two-parameter fit the number of massless neutrino generations is found to be Nv = 2.91 ± 0.26. Thus the hypothesis of a fourth neutrino with mass less than 40 GeV is excluded with 95% confidence level. Combining the cross section measurements with the ratio Γl/Γh reported in another DELPHI paper [Phys. Lett. Abstract: At the CERN SPS we have measured a deep inelastic μ± cross section asymmetry at momentum transfers Q2 ranging from 15 to 180GeV2. The result is in quantitative agreement with the WS/GIM standard electroweak model and allows to determine the muon neutral current couplings.

Abstract: A cathode readout MWPC for the high-density projection chamber (HPC) of the DELPHI experiment at LEP has been built and tested. In order to decouple both electrically and mechanically the drift volume of the HPC from the readout region, the segmented cathodes are made of brass U profiles, with a 100 μm diameter wire wound around the profile with a 2 mm pitch.

Abstract: The polarization of theM2 muon beam at the CERN SPS is studied at 220/200, 260/240, 300/280 GeV/c π+/μ+ momenta by using a lead-glass telescope and a simple trigger system to measure the positron spectrum from muon decay. A direct measurement of the polarization difference between the 220/200 GeV/c beam (forward decays, average polarization ∼−0.8) and the 300/200 GeV/c beam (backward decays, average polarization ∼+0.1) is also presented.

Abstract: The angular distribution of 2720 tracks of 1085 hadronic final states produced from (e+e-) annihilation has been studied in the 1.2 to 3.0 GeV total centre-of-mass energy range. If we parametrize the angular distribution in terms off(θ) =1 + A cos2 θ, where 6 is the angle between the hadronic track produced and the colliding-beam direction, the results show thatA is less than 0.21, with 90% confidence.

Abstract: Scaling violations in the nucleon structure function F2(x,Q2) measured with high statistics in deep inelastic scattering of muons on a carbon target are compared to predictions of perturbative QCD. Excellent agreement is observed with numerical solutions of the Altarelli-Parisi evolution equations over the entire x and Q2 range of data. In a next-to-leading order nonsinglet approximation, the QCD mass scale parameter ΛMS is determined to be 230±20(stat.)±60(syst.) MeV. A singlet to the data favours a soft gluon distribution.

Abstract: The energy-loss spectrum of high energy muons after traversal of a 10 meter iron degrader has been measured with an accuracy of better than 1%. Data taken at energies between 50 and 120 GeV are in agreement with predictions from a Monte Carlo program based on the most recent theoretical descriptions of all relevant processes. The stopping power calculated by this program deviates up to several percent from earlier calculations.

Abstract: The possible existence of new vector mesons above the ρ is investigated. The conclusion is that our data are compatible with the existence of the ρ′-meson only if we assume as a firm theoretical prediction the Gounaris-Sakurai tail of the standard ρ-meson. Furthermore our data are compatible with the existence of the ρ″-meson if we assume the validity of the$\bar p$p model for the calculation of the multihadron cross-section.

48. A new large-acceptance and high-efficiency neutron detector for missing-mass studies

Abstract: A large-acceptance and high-efficiency neutron detector is described. The sensitive surface and volume of the detector are 2.16 m2 and 0.78 m3, respectively. The detector consists of twenty-four elements of plastic scintillator, each having dimensions (100×18×18) cm3. The large volume of scintillator, in the particular geometrical arrangement chosen, allows a mean detection efficiency of about 25% in the range (70÷390) MeV neutron kinetic energy for a laboratory solid angle of 0.14 sr at 4 m radial distance. With the techniques adopted, calibrations with charged particles can be easily performed in a few hours using a low beam intensity. An interesting features of this instrument is the accuracy achieved in locating incident particles, which is ±1.4 cm for charged particles, and ±2.5 cm for neutrons. The accuracies achieved for the time-of-flight measurement are ±0.35 ns for charged particles and ±0.7 ns for neutrons. With these resolutions in the neutron time of flight and angle, the uncertainty in the missing mass is ±4 MeV for η, ±10 MeV for ω, and ±15 MeV for ϕ mesons.

49. Direct check of QED in e+e− interactions at highq 2-values

Abstract: A study of 1824 e+e−→e±e∓ events in the total centre-of-mass energy range from 1.6 GeV to 2.0 GeV, allows one to establish that production angular distributions, a collinearity and acoplanarity distributions, and absolute value of the cross-sections and their energy-dependence, follow QED predictions including first-order radiative corrections. In particular, the absolute value of the cross-section and the power of its energy-dependence agree with theoretical expectations within ±6% and ±2%, respectively. The inadequacy of the peaking approximation in our experimental conditions of observations has been measured to be (2.8±0.4)%.

Abstract: The reactions π−p→ n+(X0→total) and π−p→ n+(X0→neutrals) have been studied at 1.6 GeV/c with the Bologna-CERN neutron missing-mass spectrometer. Both reactions have been detected without the use of visual techniques. The results are: σ(X0→total)=(108±14) μb and σ(X0→neutrals)=(20.0±3.5) μb, giving a branching ratio Γ(X0→neutrals)/Γ(X0→total)=(18.5±2.2)%. The branching ratio for other possible, so far undetected, neutral decay modes of the X0 turns out to be (2.4±1.9)%.
