In a commercial citrus plant, the vegetative growth of the scion is influenced by the rootstock variety in which it is grafted. Although all commercial citrus varieties planted in recent years are susceptible to HLB, the dynamics of the rootstock in grafted plant could influence the progress of HLB, whether at the plant or grove scale. In this work, HLB incidence in 'Valencia' sweet orange grafted onto 16 rootstocks and its relationship to the tree canopy volume and flushing dynamics were evaluated in a field trial under ACP control. The experiment was conducted under rainfed conditions in Bebedouro, state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, from 2011 to 2019. 'Flying Dragon' trifoliate orange known for its dwarfing characteristics was used as the rootstock. A reduction in canopy volume by 77% at 8 years of age were observed compared to the most vigorous rootstocks. The frequency of flush shoots of 'Valencia' sweet orange was not influenced by the rootstock, but the abundance of flush shoots was lower on three semi-dwarfing rootstocks and as well as 'Flying Dragon'. Although HLB incidence on 'Flying Dragon' was lower than on 'Rangpur' lime and other three semi-standard rootstocks (trees with canopy volume between 51 and 75% of the 'Rangpur' lime canopy volume), all other combinations had similar HLB disease progress regardless of the canopy volume and flushing dynamics. Moreover, under field conditions, variations on the cumulative HLB incidence greater than 26% were necessary to significantly separate rootstocks. Therefore, the results suggest that true dwarfing rootstocks have potential to integrate the management program for HLB and that mechanisms in addition to tree vigor appear to be involved in the host-vector relationship. Purpose Porous structures have been widely used in filtration, medical implants and aerospace field. In the filtration field, the study of permeability of the porous structures is of great importance. This paper aims to study the influence of selective laser sintering/melting (SLS/SLM) process parameters on porosity and permeability of stainless steels filters with gradient porosity (FGM). Design/methodology/approach AISI 316L stainless steel powder was used to manufacture FGM filters by varying the hatch distance while other process parameters were fixed. The relationship between porosity and permeability of such FGM filters was investigated by means of Archimedes’ and Forchheimer’s laws. The gradient of porosity was also analyzed by means of micro-computed tomography. Findings The results have confirmed the ability of SLS/SLM in controlling porosity of the final product by varying the hatch distance. Further, the results allow to assume that FGM filters will have particle retention capacity related to lowest porosity value (which in turn is associated with the lowest hatch distance value used), while it will work at lower pressure drops – or at higher flow rates for equal pressure drop – when compared to a filter without gradient porosity. Originality/value Some research found in recent literature has showed the relationship between SLS/SLM process parameters and permeability of stainless steel porous structures. However, this paper fulfils the need to understand the relationship between SLS/SLM process parameters, porosity and permeability behavior of functionally graded porous structures (FGM filters).

The isotropic Stoner-Wohlfarth model can be applied for the determination of the anisotropy field in powders. Samples of strontium ferrite - SrFe12O19 – were measured in Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM). By means of the fitting of the first quadrant of the hysteresis curve the anisotropy field was estimated as 19-20 kOe for the SrFe12O19 phase. The main advantage of the method is its simplicity, because compacting or sintering of the powder samples is not necessary

The advances achieved by cell-based therapies to treat autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and multiple sclerosis (MS), despite promising, are still insufficient for the current demands. RA and MS therapeutic approaches follow world guidelines to use disease modifying drugs and biological agents that, regardless of some good results in clinical outcomes, are well known for several systemic secondary side effects. Dendrimers are custom-made nanoparticles with proved clinical potential, displaying proper size, chemistries, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory properties. This has directed their potential use as drug delivery systems for cancer therapy, for instance. This review manuscript discloses the hidden potential behind dendrimers as alternative viable solutions to treat RA and MS, by focusing in the most recent reports describing the use of dendrimers for suppressing inflammation and possibly preventing disease progression. Among the wide range of strategies to target skin repair/regeneration, tissue engineering (TE) with stem cells at the forefront, remains as the most promising route. Cell sheet (CS) engineering is herein proposed, taking advantage of particular cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions and subsequent cellular milieu, to create 3D TE constructs to promote full-thickness skin wound regeneration. Human adipose derived stem cells (hASCs) CS were obtained within five days using both thermoresponsive and standard cell culture surfaces. hASCs-based constructs were then built by superimposing three CS and transplanted into full-thickness excisional mice skin wounds with delayed healing. Constructs obtained using thermoresponsive surfaces were more stable than the ones from standard cell culture surfaces due to the natural adhesive character of the respective CS. Both CS-generating strategies lead to prolonged hASCs engraftment, although no transdifferentiation phenomena were observed. Moreover, our findings suggest that the transplanted hASCs might be promoting neotissue vascularization and extensively influencing epidermal morphogenesis, mainly through paracrine actions with the resident cells. The thicker epidermis, with a higher degree of maturation characterized by the presence of rete ridges-like structures, as well as a significant number of hair follicles observed after transplantation of the constructs combining the CS obtained from the thermoresponsive surfaces, reinforced the assumptions of the influence of the transplanted hASCs and the importance of the higher stability of these constructs promoted by cohesive cell-cell and cell-ECM interactions. This study focused on three-dimensional (3D) airway space changes and stability following simultaneous maxillomandibular counterclockwise rotation, mandibular advancement, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) reconstruction with custom-made total joint prostheses (TMJ Concepts(®)). Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 30 consecutive female patients with irreversibly compromised TMJs were obtained at the following intervals: T1, presurgery; T2, immediately after surgery; and T3, at least 6 months after surgery. The CBCT volumetric datasets were analysed with Dolphin Imaging(®) software to evaluate surgical and postsurgical changes to oropharyngeal airway parameters. The average changes in airway surface area (SA), volume (VOL), and minimum axial area (MAA) were, 179.50 mm(2), 6302.60 mm(3), and 92.23 mm(2), respectively, at the longest follow-up (T3-T1) (P≤0.001). Significant correlations between the amount of mandibular advancement and counterclockwise rotation of the occlusal plane and 3D airway changes were also found (P≤0.01). The results of this investigation showed a significant immediate 3D airway space increase after maxillomandibular counterclockwise rotation and mandibular advancement with TMJ Concepts total joint prostheses, which remained stable over the follow-up period.

Ni-Fe based soft-magnetic alloys, processed via Metal Injection Molding (MIM), were investigated regarding the influence of processing route on final magnetic properties and compared to fully dense cast materials. The process variations included high and low temperature debinding, different sintering routes and the application of hot isostatic pressing (HIP). The different densities resulting from the process variations were related to maximum magnetic permeability. Results have shown that density, in the range between 7,5g/cm³ and 8,0g/cm³, does not have significant influence on the maximum permeability, allowing cost-effective process routes. It was also verified that fullydense cast alloys still exhibits superior properties, with lower coercive fields and higher permeability, but results achieved after HIP process overcame even the values of these commercial grade alloys.

Extracellular calcium (Ca 2 + o ) and its receptor, the Ca 2 + -sensing receptor (CaSR), play an important role in prostate physiology, and it has been shown that the deregulation of Ca 2 + homeostasis and the overexpression of CaSR are involved in prostate cancer (PCa). Regucalcin (RGN), a Ca 2 + -binding protein that plays a relevant role in intracellular Ca 2 + homeostasis, was identified as an under-expressed protein in human PCa. Moreover, RGN was associated with suppression of cell proliferation, suggesting that the loss of RGN may favor development and progression of PCa. This work aims to unveil the role of Ca 2 + o on RGN expression and viability of non-neoplastic (PNT1A) and neoplastic (LNCaP) prostate cell lines. It was demonstrated that Ca 2 + o up-regulates RGN expression in both cell lines, but important differences were found between cells for dose- and time-responses to Ca 2 + o treatment. It was also shown that high [Ca 2 + ] o triggers different effects on cell proliferation of neoplastic and non-neoplastic PCa cells, which seems to be related with RGN expression levels. This suggests the involvement of RGN in the regulation of cell proliferation in response to Ca 2 + o treatment. Also, the effect of Ca 2 + o on CaSR expression seems to be dependent of RGN expression, which is strengthened by the fact that RGN-knockdown in PNT1A cells increases the CaSR expression, whereas transgenic rats overexpressing RGN exhibit low levels of CaSR. Overall, our results highlighted the importance of RGN as a regulatory protein in Ca 2 + -dependent signaling pathways and its deregulation of RGN expression by Ca 2 + o may contribute for onset and progression of PCa.

RESUMO – O cultivo de microalga em meios heterotroficos e uma alternativa promissora para obtencao de pigmentos como o β-caroteno. Assim, o objetivo do trabalho foi a quantificacao deste pigmento em larga escala a partir da biomassa de microalga Phormidium sp. A producao desse pigmento foi conduzida atraves do cultivo heterotrofico, utilizando agua residuaria como meio. A extracao do β-caroteno foi obtido por ultra-som (Sonics, Anaheim, CA, EUA) com sonda de 13 mm de diâmetro. Os isomeros foram quantificados de acordo com os seguintes parâmetros: ordem de eluicao na coluna C30 de HPLC, cromatografia com padroes autenticos, e espectros de massa. All-trans-β-caroteno (70,22 ± 0,4 g.g) e 9-cis-β-caroteno (8,0± 0,1g.g) a partir da biomassa. Visando uma escala industrial a partir do cultivo heterotrofico de 10,000 m/d, estima-se uma producao all-trans-β-caroteno 7.902,5 kg/ano e 4.944,7 kg/ano de 9-cis-βcaroteno apresentando assim valores de alta rentabilidade no beneficiamento deste tipo de pigmento comparados com a producao em meio autotrofico.

Monitoring of electrical field poling processes by optical polarimetry (EFPOP) is presented as a simple alternative method for the study of induced noncentrosymmetry, related to nonlinear optical second-order effects in organic chromophore-doped sol-gel films. Dynamics of EFPOP has been closely followed in guest-host systems, consisting of porous sol-gel silicate film matrices doped with p-nitroaniline, as evidence of the EFPOP sensitivity to chromophore orientational order.

In the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), the adrenal glands are subject to opportunistic infections, neoplasm or direct cytopathic effect by HIV. It is know that the incidence and type of adrenal involvement vary according to the patient's place of origin. In this paper we evaluate adrenal involvement in fourteen patients that died from AIDS in the University Hospital of Uberaba, Brazil. The group studied was comprised of thirteen males and thirteen whites. The age was 29.9 +/- 7.8 years, and the body mass index was 19.0 +/- 4.1 kg/m2. Adrenal specimens obtained from autopsies were analyzed by light microscopy. Inflammation was found in 100% of the cases and the etiologic agent(s) was (were) identified in eight (58.1%) patients. Cytomegalovirus was identified in seven cases, Cryptococcus sp and Herpes simplex in two and Histoplasma sp in one case, these pathologic findings were similar to literature. We also found parenchymal calcification and adrenal central vein phlebitis in one case each. Injury was found in some cases without identified infections agent. This fact could be due to the direct cytopathic effect by HIV, or due to toxicity of drug therapy used during treatment of AIDS and opportunistic infections.

The detailed pathophysiology of diabetic foot ulcers is yet to be established and improved treatments are still required. We propose a strategy that directs inflammation, neovascularization, and neoinnervation of diabetic wounds. Aiming to potentiate a relevant secretome for nerve regeneration, stem cells were precultured in hyaluronic acid-based spongy hydrogels under neurogenic/standard media before transplantation into diabetic mice full-thickness wounds. Acellular spongy hydrogels and empty wounds were used as controls. Reepithelialization was attained 4 weeks after transplantation independently of the test groups, whereas a thicker and more differentiated epidermis was observed for the cellular spongy hydrogels. A switch from the inflammatory to the proliferative phase of wound healing was revealed for all the experimental groups 2 weeks after injury, but a significantly higher M2(CD163 þ )/M1(CD86 þ ) subtype ratio was observed in the neurogenic preconditioned group that also failed to promote neoinnervation. A higher number of intraepidermal nerve fibers were observed for the unconditioned group probably due to a more controlled transition from the inflammatory to the proliferative phase. The question of remanence in SmCo5 sintered magnets is reviewed, giving special attention to the influence of microstructure. In SmCo5 magnets, the microstructural constituents are the matrix phase SmCo5, another ferromagnetic phase (Sm2Co7), oxides (Sm2O3), a recently reported carbide SmCoC2 and pores. A method to estimate alignment via the ratio Jr/Js from remanence measurements and microstructural analysis is proposed. The results agree very well with the degree of alignment calculated from Schulz pole figures. During sintering it was observed that the nucleation of SmCo5 on the Sm2Co7 phase is epitaxial. Hexagonal Sm2Co7 is present in our sintered magnets but rhombohedral Sm2Co7 may also be present. The effect of chemical composition (Sm content and oxygen content) on remanence and on the ratio Jr/Js was evaluated. In the sintering step, the densification occurs more slowly for compositions with higher samarium content (or higher Sm2Co7 volume fraction). A model able to calculate the best chemical composition to maximize coercivity and remanence is presented and discussed.

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is an annual plant belonging to subfamily Chenopodiaceae containing such granite importance, being considered a pseudocereal. For the quinoa to gain widespread attention, to the point of achieving large scale cultivation in Brazil it is necessary for the studies to advance specially in regards to quality of produced seeds. The main aim of this work was to evaluate potential of quinoa seed’s production cultivated in different seasons, as well as quality of seeds produced on primary and secondary stalks of quinoa plants from BRS Piabiru, produced in the South of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil. The evaluated seeding seasons were October, November and December, June, July and August of the years 2015/2016, after the plants were taken to evaluation regarding agronomical characters (fresh mass of ramification glomeruli, main glomeruli, fresh mass of stem from the main, fresh mass of stem ramification, fresh mass of leaves, dry mass of stem ramification, stem from the main, glomeruli from the main, stem ramification, of leaves, diameter of stem and panicle lenght) and quality of seeds (germination, test of cold, accelerated aging, and seed’s emergency). Quality of the seed is assured when it’s produced after months of July, August and November, given that quality of seeds from main stem is superior.
