1. Effect of stress on prolactin release in nulliparous and primiparous rats

Abstract

Reproductive experience modifies seric concentration of prolactin. In adition, stress is known to modulate this neurohormone release. Taken together, these facts are suggestive of a possible interaction. The objective of the present study was to analyze the influence of acute and prolonged stress on prolactin secretion in nulliparous and experienced rats. Wistar nulliparous (n= 12) and primiparous (n= 12) female rats were submitted to a chronic jugular vein catheterization surgery. Both groups were submitted to acute stress induced by formalin (4%) subcutaneous injection or restrained stress in a PVC tube. One hour stress sessions were performed during proestrous morning. Blood samples were obtained in 2, 5, 10, 15, 30 and 60 minutes after acute or during restrained stress. Seric prolactin concentration was measured by radioimmunoassay. The results showed an increased prolactin release at 10 and 15 minutes in primiparous compared to nulliparous during restrained stress (Repeated Measures Anova, F5,15= 9,65; p< 0,001). No differences between groups were observed in prolactin release after formalin injection. In conclusion, we can suggest that prolactin secretory stress response can be modulated by reproductive experience although further studies are necessary to elucidate oestrus cycle and different contribution of stress types.

The system of plastic scintillator counters for the AMS experiment is described. The main characteristics of the detector are: (a) large sensitive area (four 1.6 m2 planes) with small dead space; (b) low-power consumption (150 W for the power and the read-out electronics of 336 PMs); (c) 120 ps time resolution. Abstract

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) was flown on the space shuttle Discovery during flight STS-91 in a 51.7 degree orbit at altitudes between 320 and 390 km. A total of 2.86 * 10^6 helium nuclei were observed in the rigidity range 1 to 140 GV. No antihelium nuclei were detected at any rigidity. An upper limit on the flux ratio of antihelium to helium of < 1.1 * 10^-6 is obtained., 18 pages, Latex, 9 .eps figures

Abstract

The proton spectrum in the kinetic energy range 0.1 to 200 GeV was measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during space shuttle flight STS-91 at an altitude of 380 km. Above the geomagnetic cutoff the observed spectrum is parameterized by a power law. Below the geomagnetic cutoff a substantial second spectrum was observed concentrated at equatorial latitudes with a flux ~ 70 m^-2 sec^-1 sr^-1. Abstract

The palladium-catalyzed desilylation-arylation of substituted vinylsilanes by p-iodoanisole in the presence of bidentate phosphine ligands is described. Apart from enhancing the rate of the reaction considerably, heteroatom-based functional groups in the vinylsilane moiety have a profound influence on the regiochemistry. A catalytic cycle for the chelation-controlled desilylation-arylation reaction involving five- and six-membered chelate rings is proposed.
