We present K2-2016-BLG-0005Lb, a densely sampled, planetary binary caustic-crossing microlensing event found from a blind search of data gathered from Campaign 9 of the Kepler K2 mission (K2C9). K2-2016-BLG-0005Lb is the first bound microlensing exoplanet discovered from space-based data. The event has caustic entry and exit points that are resolved in the K2C9 data, enabling the lens--source relative proper motion to be measured. We have fitted a binary microlens model to the Kepler data, and to simultaneous observations from multiple ground-based surveys. Whilst the ground-based data only sparsely sample the binary caustic, they provide a clear detection of parallax that allows us to break completely the microlensing mass--position--velocity degeneracy and measure the planet's mass directly. We find a host mass of $0.58\pm0.04 ~{\rm M}_\odot$ and a planetary mass of $1.1\pm0.1 ~{\rm M_J}$. The system lies at a distance of $5.2\pm0.2~$kpc from Earth towards the Galactic bulge, more than twice the distance of the previous most distant planet found by Kepler. The sky-projected separation of the planet from its host is found to be $4.2\pm0.3~$au which, for circular orbits, deprojects to a host separation $a = 4.4^{+1.9}_{-0.4}~$au and orbital period $P = 13^{+9}_{-2}~$yr. This makes K2-2016-BLG-0005Lb a close Jupiter analogue orbiting a low-mass host star. According to current planet formation models, this system is very close to the host mass threshold below which Jupiters are not expected to form. Upcoming space-based exoplanet microlensing surveys by NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope and, possibly, ESA's Euclid mission, will provide demanding tests of current planet formation models., 18 pages. The current architecture of a given multi-planetary system is a key fingerprint of its past formation and dynamical evolution history. Long-term follow-up observations are key to complete their picture. Aims. In this paper, we focus on the confirmation and characterization of the components of the TOI-969 planetary system, where TESS detected a Neptune-size planet candidate in a very close-in orbit around a late K-dwarf star. Methods. We use a set of precise radial velocity observations from HARPS, PFS, and CORALIE instruments covering more than two years in combination with the TESS photometric light curve and other ground-based follow-up observations to confirm and characterize the components of this planetary system. Results. We find that TOI-969 b is a transiting close-in (Pb ~ 1.82 days) mini-Neptune planet (mb = 9.1−1.0+1.1 M⊕, Rb = 2.765−0.097+0.088 R⊕), placing it on the lower boundary of the hot-Neptune desert (Teq,b = 941 ± 31 K). The analysis of its internal structure shows that TOI-969 b is a volatile-rich planet, suggesting it underwent an inward migration. The radial velocity model also favors the presence of a second massive body in the system, TOI-969 c, with a long period of Pc = 1700−280+290 days, a minimum mass of mc sin ic = 11.3−0.9+1.1 MJup, and a highly eccentric orbit of ec = 0.628−0.036+0.043. Conclusions. The TOI-969 planetary system is one of the few around K-dwarfs known to have this extended configuration going from a very close-in planet to a wide-separation gaseous giant. TOI-969 b has a transmission spectroscopy metric of 93 and orbits a moderately bright (G = 11.3 mag) star, making it an excellent target for atmospheric studies. SUMMARY The nursery industry pasteurizes soil with steam and quicklime to reduce plant pathogens. The mechanism of action for quicklime is the resulting exothermic reaction that occurs when the chemical interacts with water and its ability to increase pH levels. These treatments may also reduce pathogens in a commercial poultry house. In this study, a steam sterilization cart simulated conditions used by the nursery industry to treat litter inoculated with Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. A homogenized sample of litter was exposed to steam for 0, 5, 30, or 120 min. Quicklime was used at concentrations of 0 (control), 2.5, 5.0, or 10.0%. All steam treatments, with or without quicklime, significantly reduced Salmonella Typhimurium colonization by at least 3 orders of magnitude. Significant reductions were also observed in the treatments with quicklime alone. Both the steam and the quicklime treatments often reduced colonization to undetectable levels, even when samples were enriched. Therefore, we demonstrated 2 novel techniques for reducing Salmonella Typhimurium in poultry litter. Soil pasteurization potentially offers an environmentally sound means of reducing the pathogens present in used poultry litter.

In the age of JWST, temperate terrestrial exoplanets transiting nearby late-type M dwarfs provide unique opportunities for characterising their atmospheres, as well as searching for biosignature gases. In this context, the benchmark TRAPPIST-1 planetary system has garnered the interest of a broad scientific community. Aims. We report here the discovery and validation of two temperate super-Earths transiting LP 890-9 (TOI-4306, SPECULOOS-2), a relatively low-activity nearby (32 pc) M6V star. The inner planet, LP 890-9 b, was first detected by TESS (and identified as TOI-4306.01) based on four sectors of data. Intensive photometric monitoring of the system with the SPECULOOS Southern Observatory then led to the discovery of a second outer transiting planet, LP 890-9 c (also identified as SPECULOOS-2 c), previously undetected by TESS. The orbital period of this second planet was later confirmed by MuSCAT3 follow-up observations. Methods. We first inferred the properties of the host star by analyzing its Lick/Kast optical and IRTF/SpeX near-infrared spectra, as well as its broadband spectral energy distribution, and Gaia parallax. We then derived the properties of the two planets by modelling multi-colour transit photometry from TESS, SPECULOOS-South, MuSCAT3, ExTrA, TRAPPIST-South, and SAINT-EX. Archival imaging, Gemini-South/Zorro high-resolution imaging, and Subaru/IRD radial velocities also support our planetary interpretation. Results. With a mass of 0.118 ± 0.002 M⊙, a radius of 0.1556 ± 0.0086 R⊙, and an effective temperature of 2850 ± 75 K, LP 890-9 is the second-coolest star found to host planets, after TRAPPIST-1. The inner planet has an orbital period of 2.73 d, a radius of 1.320 −0.027+0.053 R⊕, and receives an incident stellar flux of 4.09 ± 0.12 S⊕. The outer planet has a similar size of 1.367 −0.039+0.055R⊕ and an orbital period of 8.46 d. With an incident stellar flux of 0.906 ± 0.026 S⊕, it is located within the conservative habitable zone, very close to its inner limit (runaway greenhouse). Although the masses of the two planets remain to be measured, we estimated their potential for atmospheric characterisation via transmission spectroscopy using a mass-radius relationship and found that, after the TRAPPIST-1 planets, LP 890-9 c is the second-most favourable habitable-zone terrestrial planet known so far (assuming for this comparison a similar atmosphere for all planets). Conclusions. The discovery of this remarkable system offers another rare opportunity to study temperate terrestrial planets around our smallest and coolest neighbours. © L. We report on precise Doppler measurements of L231-32 (TOI-270), a nearby M dwarf ($d=22$ pc, $M_\star = 0.39$ M$_\odot$, $R_\star = 0.38$ R$_\odot$), which hosts three transiting planets that were recently discovered using data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The three planets are 1.2, 2.4, and 2.1 times the size of Earth and have orbital periods of 3.4, 5.7, and 11.4 days. We obtained 29 high-resolution optical spectra with the newly commissioned Echelle Spectrograph for Rocky Exoplanet and Stable Spectroscopic Observations (ESPRESSO) and 58 spectra using the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS). From these observations, we find the masses of the planets to be $1.58 \pm 0.26$, $6.15 \pm 0.37$, and $4.78 \pm 0.43$ M$_\oplus$, respectively. The combination of radius and mass measurements suggests that the innermost planet has a rocky composition similar to that of Earth, while the outer two planets have lower densities. Thus, the inner planet and the outer planets are on opposite sides of the `radius valley' -- a region in the radius-period diagram with relatively few members, which has been interpreted as a consequence of atmospheric photo-evaporation. We place these findings into the context of other small close-in planets orbiting M dwarf stars, and use support vector machines to determine the location and slope of the M dwarf ($T_\mathrm{eff} < 4000$ K) radius valley as a function of orbital period. We compare the location of the M dwarf radius valley to the radius valley observed for FGK stars, and find that its location is a good match to photo-evaporation and core-powered mass loss models. Finally, we show that planets below the M dwarf radius valley have compositions consistent with stripped rocky cores, whereas most planets above have a lower density consistent with the presence of a H-He atmosphere., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report on the discovery and validation of a two-planet system around a bright (V = 8.85 mag) early G dwarf (1.43 $R_{\odot}$, 1.15 $M_{\odot}$, TOI 2319) using data from NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). Three transit events from two planets were detected by citizen scientists in the month-long TESS light curve (sector 25), as part of the Planet Hunters TESS project. Modelling of the transits yields an orbital period of \Pb\ and radius of $3.41 _{ - 0.12 } ^ { + 0.14 }$ $R_{\oplus}$ for the inner planet, and a period in the range 19.26-35 days and a radius of $5.83 _{ - 0.14 } ^ { + 0.14 }$ $R_{\oplus}$ for the outer planet, which was only seen to transit once. Each signal was independently statistically validated, taking into consideration the TESS light curve as well as the ground-based spectroscopic follow-up observations. Radial velocities from HARPS-N and EXPRES yield a tentative detection of planet b, whose mass we estimate to be $11.56 _{ - 6.14 } ^ { + 6.58 }$ $M_{\oplus}$, and allow us to place an upper limit of $27.5$ $M_{\oplus}$ (99 per cent confidence) on the mass of planet c. Due to the brightness of the host star and the strong likelihood of an extended H/He atmosphere on both planets, this system offers excellent prospects for atmospheric characterisation and comparative planetology., Accepted for publication in MNRAS (15 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables)

Here, we report the discovery and characterization of the transiting super-Earth planet orbiting LHS 1478 (TOI-1640). The star is an inactive red dwarf (J ∼ 9.6 mag and spectral type m3 V) with mass and radius estimates of 0.20 ± 0.01M· and 0.25 ± 0.01R· , respectively, and an effective temperature of 3381 ± 54 K. It was observed by TESS in four sectors. These data revealed a transit-like feature with a period of 1.949 days. We combined the TESS data with three ground-based transit measurements, 57 radial velocity (RV) measurements from CARMENES, and 13 RV measurements from IRD, determining that the signal is produced by a planet with a mass of 2.33-0.20+0.20 Mâ• and a radius of 1.24-0.05+0.05 Ra• . The resulting bulk density of this planet is 6.67 g cm-3, which is consistent with a rocky planet with an Fe-and MgSiO3-dominated composition. Although the planet would be too hot to sustain liquid water on its surface (its equilibrium temperature is about ∼595 K, suggesting aVenus-like atmosphere), spectroscopic metrics based on the capabilities of the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope and the fact that the host star is rather inactive indicate that this is one of the most favorable known rocky exoplanets for atmospheric characterization. © 2021 ESO., CARMENES is an instrument at the Centro Astronómico Hispano-Alemán (CAHA) at Calar Alto (Almería, Spain), operated jointly by the Junta de Andalucía and the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (CSIC). We have searched for short periodicities in the light curves of stars with $T_{\rm eff}$ cooler than 4000 K made from 2-minute cadence data obtained in TESS sectors 1 and 2. Herein we report the discovery of 10 rapidly rotating M-dwarfs with highly structured rotational modulation patterns among 10 M dwarfs found to have rotation periods less than 1 day. Star-spot models cannot explain the highly structured periodic variations which typically exhibit between 10 and 40 Fourier harmonics. A similar set of objects was previously reported following K2 observations of the Upper Scorpius association (Stauffer et al. 2017). We examine the possibility that the unusual structured light-curves could stem from absorption by charged dust particles that are trapped in or near the stellar magnetosphere. We also briefly explore the possibilities that the sharp structured features in the lightcurves are produced by extinction by coronal gas, by beaming of the radiation emitted from the stellar surface, or by occultations of spots by a dusty ring that surrounds the star. The latter is perhaps the most promising of these scenarios. Most of the structured rotators display flaring activity, and we investigate changes in the modulation pattern following the largest flares. As part of this study, we also report the discovery of 371 rapidly rotating M-dwarfs with rotational periods below 4 hr, of which the shortest period is 1.63 hr., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures, 2 tables

We report the result of a blinded search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) using the majority of the SuperCDMS Soudan data set. With an exposure of 1690 kg d, a single candidate event is observed, consistent with expected backgrounds. This analysis (combined with previous Ge results) sets an upper limit on the spin-independent WIMP–nucleon cross section of 1.4×10−44 (1.0×10−44) cm2 at 46 GeV/c2. These results set the strongest limits for WIMP–germanium-nucleus interactions for masses >12 GeV/c2.

Under normal conditions, fungi are ignored unless a disease/syndrome clinical signs are reported. The scientific communities are largely unaware of the roles fungi play in normal production parameters. Numerous preharvest interventions have demonstrated that beneficial bacteria can play a role in improving productions parameters; however, most researchers have ignored the impact that fungi may have on production. The goal of the present study was to record fungi recovered from commercial broiler and layer houses during production. Over 3,000 cecal samples were isolated using conventional culture methodology and over 890 samples were further characterized using an automated repetitive sequence-based PCR (rep-PCR) methodology. Eighty-eight different fungal and yeast species were identified, including Aspergillus spp., Penicillium spp., and Sporidiobolus spp, and 18 unknown genera were separated using rep-PCR. The results from the present study will provide a normal fungi background genera under commercial conditions and will be a stepping stone for investigating the impact of fungi on the gastrointestinal tract and on the health of poultry.

The K2 mission will make use of the Kepler spacecraft and its assets to expand upon Kepler's groundbreaking discoveries in the fields of exoplanets and astrophysics through new and exciting observations. K2 will use an innovative way of operating the spacecraft to observe target fields along the ecliptic for the next 2-3 years. Early science commissioning observations have shown an estimated photometric precision near 400 ppm in a single 30 minute observation, and a 6-hour photometric precision of 80 ppm (both at V=12). The K2 mission offers long-term, simultaneous optical observation of thousands of objects at a precision far better than is achievable from ground-based telescopes. Ecliptic fields will be observed for approximately 75-days enabling a unique exoplanet survey which fills the gaps in duration and sensitivity between the Kepler and TESS missions, and offers pre-launch exoplanet target identification for JWST transit spectroscopy. SUMMARY Two consecutive experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of diet on oocyst shedding and lesion development in replacement broiler breeders of 2 different genetic lines after coccidiosis vaccination. The first experiment was conducted on fresh pine shavings as the litter source, whereas the second trial was conducted on the used litter from the first experiment. Dietary formulation was based on either breeder-specific recommendations or formulations of a broiler integrator. Fecal samples were collected every other day beginning on d 6 and continuing throughout the experiment to determine oocyst shedding. Lesion assessment was performed at selected time points in both experiments to evaluate gross and microscopic intestinal lesions. In experiment 1, multiple peaks in oocyst output were observed in both genetic lines, with the first peak occurring at approximately 16 to 18 d after placement. This peak tended to have the highest observed magnitude and corresponded with the highest level of intestinal lesions observed during experiment 1. Oocyst cycling in experiment 2 followed a somewhat different pattern. Peaks were delayed and at a lower magnitude. Dietary interactions were observed in both experiments, with amount and duration of oocyst shedding and severity of lesion development being influenced by diet in both male and female genetic lines. Increased lesion severity was observed in both genetic lines fed the integrator diet as compared with the breeder-recommended diet; however, the relationship of shedding and diet was dependent on genetic line and sex. Therefore, nutrient density affects oocyst cycling and lesion development during coccidiosis vaccination in replacement broiler breeders.

SUMMARY Modern broilers grow much faster and more efficiently than their predecessors. Because of the rapid growth rates of broilers, particular attention must be given to the skeletal development of the bird. Calcium formate (CaFo) has been used as a calcium source in animal diets in the European Union for many years. The objective of this study was to evaluate CaFo in broiler diets as an alternative source of calcium. Four experimental groups (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5% CaFo) were evaluated, with 10 replicate pens per treatment. Variables measured included BW, FCR, tibia weight, bone ash percentage, tibia breaking strength, and gut morphology. Many of the parameters measured were statistically similar to the calcium carbonate control treatment. However, the 1.0% CaFo treatment significantly increased tibia breaking strength and duodenal villus height when compared with the other treatments at the completion of grow out. Therefore, CaFo can serve as an alternative calcium source in broiler diets and may significantly improve skeletal development.

Probiotics are nonpathogenic bacteria that can promote bird health by reducing pathogen colonization. Researchers have previously demonstrated that the avian immune response can be modulated with probiotics, which may provide a mechanism for the reported reductions in pathogens. We examined phagocyte oxidative burst and cell proliferation of vaccinated broilers administered probiotics. We hypothesized that the combination of probiotic bacteria and a vaccine would affect immune function. Two studies were conducted to evaluate this interaction in broilers. Treatments consisted of a negative control, probiotic, vaccine, or a probiotic + vaccine. Peripheral blood was collected on d 7, 14, and 21 of age. Heterophils and monocytes were evaluated for oxidative burst and lymphocytes were assayed for proliferation. In study 1, heterophil oxidative burst was higher (P ≤ 0.05) in each treatment that received probiotic on d 14 when compared with the negative control. On d 21, an enhanced (P ≤ 0.05) heterophil oxidative burst was observed in the probiotic treatment when compared with the other treatments. On d 14, monocyte oxidative burst was greater (P ≤ 0.05) in the probiotic + vaccine treatment when compared with all other treatments. An increase (P ≤ 0.05) in lymphocyte proliferation was observed among all treatments on d 7 when compared with the negative control. Both vaccine treatments had significant lymphocyte proliferation on d 14 when compared with the negative control. In study 2, the probiotic treatment was associated with greater levels in heterophil oxidative burst on d 7 when compared with all other treatments. On d 21, an increase (P ≤ 0.05) in heterophil oxidative burst was seen in the vaccine treatment when compared with the negative control. On d 7, increased (P ≤ 0.05) monocyte oxidative burst was observed in the vaccine treatment when compared with the negative control. No significant differences were observed in lymphocyte proliferation in any of the treatment groups. These data suggest that probiotics can modulate the immune response and may play a role in vaccination.

We present the asteroseismic analysis of 1948 F-, G- and K-type main-sequence and subgiant stars observed by the NASA {\em Kepler Mission}. We detect and characterise solar-like oscillations in 642 of these stars. This represents the largest cohort of main-sequence and subgiant solar-like oscillators observed to date. The photometric observations are analysed using the methods developed by nine independent research teams. The results are combined to validate the determined global asteroseismic parameters and calculate the relative precision by which the parameters can be obtained. We correlate the relative number of detected solar-like oscillators with stellar parameters from the {\em Kepler Input Catalog} and find a deficiency for stars with effective temperatures in the range $5300 \lesssim T_\mathrm{eff} \lesssim 5700$\,K and a drop-off in detected oscillations in stars approaching the red edge of the classical instability strip. We compare the power-law relationships between the frequency of peak power, $\nu_\mathrm{max}$, the mean large frequency separation, $\Delta\nu$, and the maximum mode amplitude, $A_\mathrm{max}$, and show that there are significant method-dependent differences in the results obtained. This illustrates the need for multiple complementary analysis methods to be used to assess the robustness and reproducibility of results derived from global asteroseismic parameters.

The analysis of the light curves of 48 B-type stars observed by Kepler is presented. Among these are 15 pulsating stars, all of which show low frequencies characteristic of SPB stars. Seven of these stars also show a few weak, isolated high frequencies and they could be considered as SPB/beta Cep hybrids. In all cases the frequency spectra are quite different from what is seen from ground-based observations. We suggest that this is because most of the low frequencies are modes of high degree which are predicted to be unstable in models of mid-B stars. We find that there are non-pulsating stars within the beta Cep and SPB instability strips. Apart from the pulsating stars, we can identify stars with frequency groupings similar to what is seen in Be stars but which are not Be stars. The origin of the groupings is not clear, but may be related to rotation. We find periodic variations in other stars which we attribute to proximity effects in binary systems or possibly rotational modulation. We find no evidence for pulsating stars between the cool edge of the SPB and the hot edge of the delta Sct instability strips. None of the stars show the broad features which can be attributed to stochastically-excited modes as recently proposed. Among our sample of B stars are two chemically peculiar stars, one of which is a HgMn star showing rotational modulation in the light curve.

We present our analysis of the long cadence Kepler data for the well-studied Blazhko star RR Lyr, gathered during the first two quarters of the satellite's observations and covering a total of 127d. Besides being of great importance for our understanding of RR Lyrae stars in general, these RR Lyr data can be regarded as a case study for observations of bright stars with Kepler. Kepler can perform high-precision photometry on targets like RR Lyr, as the saturated flux is conserved to a very high degree. The Kepler data on RR Lyr are revolutionary in several respects. Even with long-cadence sampling (one measurement per 29.4 min), the unprecedented precision (< mmag) of the Kepler photometry allows the study of the star's extreme light curve variations in detail. The multiplet structures at the main frequency and its harmonics, typical for Blazhko stars, are clearly detected up to the quintuplets. For the first time, photometric data of RR Lyr reveal the presence of half-integer frequencies, linked to a period doubling effect. This phenomenon may be connected to the still unexplained Blazhko modulation. Moreover, with three observed Blazhko cycles at our disposal, we observe that there is no exact repetition in the light curve changes from one modulation cycle to the next for RR Lyr. This may be due to additional periodicities in the star, or to transient or quasi-periodic changes.

SUMMARY A collection of members of the poultry industry and allied industries were asked to provide their opinions and comments regarding the enhancement of extension resources to benefit the industry. Topics that were discussed included the effectiveness of industry associations’ support and influence on land grant universities’ teaching and research priorities, the possibility of a land grant university or department having all resources needed to meet industry needs, what barriers exist against forming a “center of excellence,” where priorities of the University Extension Service should lie and why, what the best method of delivering information regarding biosecurity practices to relevant audiences is, and how costs incurred by specialists should be handled in relation to independent consultants.

The expected final reach of the Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) search experiment CDMS-II by the end of 2007 is a WIMP-nucleon cross-section sensitivity of 2.1×10−44 cm2. To proceed further in our search, we have proposed the SuperCDMS Phase A project that would deploy 42 1-inch thick Ge detectors, at a site deeper than the location of CDMS II, and reach a desired sensitivity goal of 1.3×10−45 cm2. These cross-sections are of interest and are complementary to Supersymmetry searches at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and future linear colliders.

The published CDMS analyses have used the shape of the phonon signal rising edge to reject low-ionization-yield surface events which produce acoustic phonons more quickly than bulk events do. To achieve better WIMP sensitivity with future larger exposures, we are using a simplified model of phonon production and propagation to construct event position estimators that help us to find more efficient surface event rejection cuts. We describe this model and the resulting new cuts, and summarize the surface event leakage rates and the sensitivity figures of merit of the five surface event rejection methods developed in the second CDMS II Soudan run data analysis.

Nicotinic systems have been found in a variety of studies to play important roles in cognitive function. Nicotinic involvement in different aspects of cognitive function such as learning vs. memory may differ. We have found in rats that the spatial repeated acquisition task in the radial-arm maze is significantly improved by low doses of the nicotinic receptor antagonist mecamylamine, the atypical nicotinic receptor ligand lobeline, as well as the α7 nicotinic receptor agonist ARR-17779. Interestingly, nicotine in the same dose range that improves working memory in the win-shift radial maze task was not effective in improving repeated acquisition performance. Nicotinic systems interact with a variety of other neural systems. Differential involvement of these extended effects with learning vs. memory may help explain differential effects of nicotinic drugs with these cognitive functions. Histamine H3 receptor antagonists have been shown by some studies to improve cognitive function, but others have not found this effect and some have found impairment. Nicotine stimulates the release of histamine. This effect may counter other cascading effects of nicotine in the performance of learning and memory tasks. A specific test of this hypothesis involves our study of nicotine (0.1–0.4 mg/kg) interactions with the histamine H3 receptor antagonist thioperamide (2.5–10 mg/kg) on learning memory in the repeated acquisition test in the radial-arm maze. The highest dose of thioperamide tested caused a significant choice accuracy impairment, which was most evident during the later portions of the learning curve. The highest dose of nicotine did not change overall errors but did cause a significant impairment in learning over trials. The choice accuracy impairment induced by thioperamide was significantly attenuated by nicotine (0.4 mg/kg). The learning impairment caused by the highest dose of nicotine was significantly attenuated by thioperamide. Thioperamide also caused a slowing of response, an effect, which was attenuated by nicotine co-administration. The repeated acquisition test can help differentiate acute drug effects on learning. Nicotine and thioperamide effectively reversed each other's choice accuracy impairment even though each by itself impaired accuracy.

Pre-pulse inhibition (PPI) is a phenomenon of neurobehavioral plasticity in which the motor response to a startling sensory stimulus is inhibited by a preceding sensory stimulus of a lower intensity. The current experiment used tactile startle rather than acoustic startle to determine the generality of PPI across sensory modalities. PPI is easily modeled in experimental animals and serves as a useful method for determining the neural bases for sensorimotor plasticity, which can be disturbed in sensory modulation disorders. In the current study, female Sprague-Dawley rats were tested for tactile startle PPI after an auditory pre-pulse. The Kepler Mission is a photometric space mission that will continuously observe a single 100 square degree field of view (FOV) of the sky of more than 100,000 stars in the Cygnus-Lyra region for four or more years with a precision of 14 parts per million (ppm) for a 6.5 hour integration including shot noise for a twelfth magnitude star. The primary goal of the mission is to detect Earth-size planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. In the process, many eclipsing binaries (EB) will also be detected. Prior to launch, the stellar characteristics will have been determined for all the stars in the FOV with K < 14.5. As part of the verification process, stars with transits (about 5%) will need to have follow-up radial velocity observations performed to determine the component masses and thereby separate grazing eclipses caused by stellar companions from transits caused by planets. The result will be a rich database on EBs. The community will have access to the archive for uses such as for EB modeling of the high-precision light curves. A guest observer program is also planned for objects not already on the target list.

Although antipsychotic drugs are therapeutically effective in attenuating the hallmark symptoms of schizophrenia, these improvements do not return most patients to normative standards of cognitive function. Thus, complementary drug treatment may be needed to treat the attentional deficits of schizophrenia as well as to counteract the potential attentional impairments caused by some antipsychotic drugs. Nicotine, a drug commonly self-administered by a great majority of individuals with schizophrenia, has been shown to significantly improve cognitive function in some studies. The current study was conducted to determine the interactive effects of the atypical antipsychotic drugs clozapine and risperidone with chronic nicotine administration on attentional performance. Adult female Sprague-Dawley rats (N=35) were trained to perform an attentional task using an operant visual signal detection task. After training, rats were infused with a dose of 5 mg/kg/day (s.c.) nicotine base (n=18) or saline (n=17) for 28 consecutive days via osmotic pump. In Exp. 1, while being administered chronic nicotine or saline, rats were given acute doses of clozapine (0, 0.625, 1.25 and 2.5 mg/kg, s.c.) and were tested for attentional function. In Exp. 2, while on chronic nicotine or saline, other rats were challenged with acute doses of risperidone (0, 0.025, 0.05 and 0.1 mg/kg, s.c.) and were tested for attentional function. Results showed that acute administration of clozapine caused a significant dose-dependent impairment in choice accuracy (percent hit) in animals treated with chronic saline. Chronic nicotine treatment itself lowered accuracy, but attenuated further declines with acute clozapine treatment. Acute administration of risperidone at high dose significantly reduced performance (percent correct rejection) in chronically saline-treated rats, but in a similar fashion as in Exp. 1, chronic nicotine lowered accuracy but attenuated further impairment with acute risperidone. In summary, atypical antipsychotic drugs clozapine and risperidone significantly impaired choice accuracy in the visual signal detection task. Clozapine was more detrimental than risperidone but the adverse effects of both clozapine and risperidone on attentional performance were masked in rats chronically treated with nicotine.

SUMMARY Recently, we demonstrated that 10 or 20% (wt/vol) hydrated lime used in poultry litter significantly reduced Salmonella enteritidis survival in vitro. However, preliminary studies with day-of-hatch poults suggested that lime in excess of 5% (wt/vol) in new litter caused mild but apparent ocular and respiratory irritation and thus was not further evaluated. Presently, we evaluated the effect of lower concentrations of hydrated lime in new dry pine wood shavings (0, 0.2, 1, or 5% wt/vol) on recovery of Salmonella, Campylobacter, coliforms, total aerobic colonyforming units, and poult performance (hatch to 7 wk). Although lime did not affect body weight at 3 wk of age, at 7 wk of age turkeys from 0.2% lime-treated pens were significantly (P < 0.05) heavier (219 g/bird) than turkeys grown in control pens. Even though incorporation of lime at the selected concentrations did not reduce Campylobacter or Salmonella recovery, lime did reduce overall aerobic colony-forming units and significantly increased weight gain in this experiment, possibly through reduction of other low level pathogens not measured in this study.

Pre-pulse inhibition (PPI) is a phenomenon of neurobehavioral plasticity in which the motor response to a startling stimulus is inhibited by a preceding stimulus of a lower intensity. Most often this is tested in the auditory mode. PPI is impaired in a variety of clinical states, most notably schizophrenia. PPI is easily modeled in experimental animals and serves as a useful basis for determining the neural bases for behavioral plasticity. In the current study we examined the interactions of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate and nicotinic cholinergic receptor systems in the expression of PPI. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were tested for auditory PPI after s.c. injections of the NMDA antagonist dizocilpine (also known as MK-801), the prototypic nicotinic agonist nicotine or both. Vehicle (saline) injections served as the control. Nicotine (0.2-0.8 mg/kg) by itself caused a modest but significant dose-related improvement in PPI. Dizocilpine (25-100 microg/kg) caused a dramatic dose-related impairment in PPI. Interestingly, the low to moderate doses of nicotine potentiated the PPI impairment by dizocilpine. In a second experiment nicotine and dizocilpine interactions with the atypical antipsychotic drug clozapine were assessed. As in the first experiment, nicotine potentiated the adverse effects of dizocilpine on PPI. The combination of nicotine with clozapine effectively attenuated the PPI impairment caused by dizocilpine when neither alone was effective. Inasmuch as PPI is impaired in schizophrenia, its reversal by the antipsychotic drug clozapine may depend on co-administration of nicotine by smoking in the patients. Development of nicotinic-based co-treatments for schizophrenia may achieve this benefit of nicotine without the hazards of smoking. Sensory modulation deficit, which is a syndrome of sensory over-responsiveness may also benefit from such combination therapy.

Both central serotonergic and nicotinic systems play important roles in a variety of neurobehavioral functions; however, the interactions of these two systems have not been fully characterized. The current study served to determine the impact of a relatively selective 5-HT2A receptor antagonist, ketanserin, on attentional function in rats and the interactions of ketanserin with nicotine administration.A standard operant visual signal detection task was used to assess sustained attention. In expt 1, adult female Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 39) were injected subcutaneously (SC) with a dose range of ketanserin (0, 0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg/kg). In expt 2, the interactions of acute ketanserin (0, 1 and 2 mg/kg, SC) and acute nicotine (0, 25 and 50 microg/kg, SC) were assessed. In expt 3, the interaction of acute ketanserin (0, 1 and 2 mg/kg, SC) and chronic nicotine (5 mg/kg per day, SC for 4 weeks via osmotic pump) was characterized. Using an operant visual signal detection task, three possible outcomes (dependent variables) were measured in each trial: percent hit, percent correct rejection, and response omissions.Ketanserin, when given alone, did not have a significant effect on either percent hit or percent correct rejection. Acute administration of 25 microg/kg nicotine significantly improved percent hit (i.e. improvement in choice accuracy), an effect that was reversed by acute administration of 1 mg/kg ketanserin. Chronic nicotine infusion for 28 consecutive days significantly increased percent correct rejection (i.e. improvement in choice accuracy) without development of tolerance, an effect which was reversed by an acute dose of 2 mg/kg ketanserin.These data suggest a functional interaction between nicotine and 5-HT2A receptor antagonist ketanserin.

In the past year and a half, the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) collaboration has been active at the Soudan mine in installing a system for running ZIP detectors that will be used to search for dark matter in the form of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles. Presently, there is an operating cryogenic system, working electronics, a functional data acquisition and analysis system, passive shielding, an active muon veto, and 12 ZIP detectors. Six of the 12 ZIP detectors have been tested in situ and are fully operational with acceptable noise profiles. CDMS is in the process of commissioning the experiment and expects to be making a background measurement by the end of summer 2003.

The widely used organophosphate insecticide, chlorpyrifos (CPF), elicits neurobehavioral abnormalities after apparently subtoxic neonatal exposures. In the current study, we administered 1 or 5 mg/kg/day of CPF to pregnant rats on gestational days 9-12, the embryonic phase spanning formation and closure of the neural tube. Although there were no effects on growth or viability, offspring showed behavioral abnormalities when tested in adolescence and adulthood. In the CPF-exposed groups, locomotor hyperactivity was noted in early T-maze trials, and in the elevated plus-maze; alterations in the rate of habituation were also identified. Learning and memory were adversely affected, as assessed using the 16-arm radial maze. Although all CPF-exposed animals eventually learned the task, reference and working memory were impaired in the early training sessions. After training, rats in the CPF group did not show the characteristic amnestic effect of scopolamine, a muscarinic acetylcholine antagonist, suggesting that, unlike the situation in the control group, muscarinic pathways were not used to solve the maze. These results indicate that apparently subtoxic CPF exposure during neurulation adversely affects brain development, leading to behavioral anomalies that selectively include impairment of cholinergic circuits used in learning and memory. The resemblance of these findings to those of late gestational or neonatal CPF exposure indicates a prolonged window of vulnerability of brain development to CPF.

The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) uses low-temperature Ge and Si detectors to search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) via their elastic-scattering interaction with atomic nuclei while discriminating against interactions of background particles. CDMS data from 1998 and 1999 with a relaxed fiducial-volume cut (resulting in 15.8 kg-days exposure on Ge) are consistent with an earlier analysis with a more restrictive fiducial-volume cut. Twenty-three WIMP candidate events are observed, but these events are consistent with a background from neutrons. Resulting limits on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon elastic-scattering cross-section are lower than those of any other experiment for WIMPs with masses between 10–70 GeV c −2 . Under the assumptions of standard WIMP interactions and a standard halo, the results are incompatible with the annual-modulation signal of DAMA at 99.99% CL in the asymptotic limit.

We discuss 2.8–3.9 lm spectra from the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope of seven sight lines toward IR sources near Sagittarius A* in the Galactic center (GC). In all lines of sight, the 3.0 l mH 2O ice feature is present with optical depths in the range 0.33–1.52. By constructing a simple ice model, we show that the ice profile is not fully accounted for by pure H2O ice mantles. Residual absorption is present at 2.95 and 3.2–3.6 lm. Aliphatic hydrocarbon absorption at 3.4 lm is shown to vary by a factor of 1.7, indicating significant changes in the foreground extinction across the small field. By determining the true ice profile for the GC line of sight, we reveal an additional broad absorption component around � 3.3 lm, which partially underlies the 3.4 lm aliphatic hydrocarbon feature. Its carrier resides in the diffuse interstellar medium. The width of this absorption is deduced to be at least � 100 cm � 1 , much broader than individual polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules produced in the laboratory or unidentified infrared emission features observed in the interstellar medium. The 4.62 lm ‘‘ XCN ’’ feature is detected in the molecular clouds along the line of sight toward IRS 19. In the solar neighborhood, this feature is seen only toward some deeply embedded protostars. Toward the GC, it may indicate the serendipitous presence of such an object in the line of sight to IRS 19, or it might conceivably arise from the processing of ices in the circumnuclear ring of the GC itself. SUMMARY Previous research has demonstrated that increased photointensity near the time of spray application can increase preening activity and ingestion of spray-applied material and can enhance establishment of a competitive exclusion culture. In the present study, inclusion of selected colors had a marked effect on preening activity, with fluorescein or forest green combined with fluorescein causing the greatest increase in preening under conditions of constant lighting (92 FC before, during and after spray). Minimal effects of constant incandescent (80 FC) vs. fluorescent light (80 FC) source were observed, regardless of the color used. While addition of color improved preening activity under constant lighting, no additional increase in preening activity was observed when coloring was added to the spray applied under conditions of increasing photointensity. These data indicate that coloring of spray solutions for application to neonatal chicks can improve preening activity under conditions of constant lighting. However, optimization of photointensity near the time of spray application negates the need for addition of coloring and, in fact, increases preening activity to levels not observed due to color addition to the spray solution under conditions of constant lighting.

Spray application offers low-cost and efficient application of biologics and reduced concerns regarding diverse water quality and medicator/proportioner function. However, little is known about how environmental conditions may modify preening and associated ingestion of spray-applied biologics. We evaluated the effect of selected photo intensities, sound levels, and ambient temperatures on preening behavior and ingestion of spray-applied biologics on day-of-hatch chicks. Data from these experiments suggest that temperature, sound, and especially photointensity may play a major role in determination of preening behavior in day-of-hatch chicks. Increasing photointensity (0 to 115.5 FC) at the time of spray application resulted in marked and significant increases in preening and preening-associated ingestion of spray-applied products. Furthermore, changes in sound intensity (56 to 83 dB) or temperature (35 to 22°C) increased cumulative preening events. These data indicate that control of selected environmental conditions is essential for optimal ingestion of spray box-applied biologics.

Competitive exclusion of intestinal pathogens by administration of beneficial and defined cultures of normal intestinal microflora is a safe and effective means of reducing the incidence and severity of chick infections with Salmonella and other intestinal pathogens. It is important that competitive exclusion cultures not carry genetic material (e.g., plasmids), which could transfer antibiotic resistance to other microflora, including pathogens. As such, safe and effective competitive exclusion cultures must be sensitive to commonly used antimicrobial agents. By necessity, intentional or accidental exposure of these beneficial microflora to antibiotics will reduce or eliminate the protection provided by competitive exclusion culture establishment. As antibiotic residues can be present from embryonic, hatchling, or maternal administration, a rapid and sensitive assay for the nonspecific detection of residues, which could interfere with competitive exclusion culture establishment, is needed. This study was conducted to develop a rapid and inexpensive bioassay to detect multiple antimicrobial residues in egg yolk and neonatal yolk sacs. Aerobic bacterial strains with known sensitivity to several antibiotics used by the poultry industry were selected and individually compared for sensitivity to enrofloxacin, gentamicin, tetracycline, ceftiofur, and tylosin concentrations in egg yolks. This assay was found to be relatively sensitive for the detection of these antimicrobials, and detection of residues was associated with reduced competitive exclusion culture (PREEMPT) establishment in one experiment. Importantly, this assay can be implemented with minimal training or equipment under commercial hatchery practices and could be used to determine embryo groups, in advance of hatch, that are not suitable candidates for competitive exclusion treatment in the hatchery.

The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) employs massive ionization- and phonon-mediated detectors to search for WIMPs via their elastic scattering interactions with nuclei while discriminating against interactions by other background particles. Limits on the WIMP-nucleon scattering cross-section, based on 3.1 kg d of exposure, exclude new parameter space in the 10–30 GeV WIMP mass region and also a portion of the region allowed by the DAMA annual modulation search (Bernabei, Phys. Lett. 450 (1999) 448).

Using the reverse hemolytic plaque assay described in the present investigation, a secretagogue activity of bursal antisteroidogenic peptide (BASP) for growth hormone (GH) or prolactin (PRL) secretion was observed in chicken Day 20e pituitary cell monolayers. Partially purified BASP (ppBASP), at all concentrations evaluated (0.25 BEQ/ml, 0.75 BEQ/ml, or 1.5 BEQ/ml), induced PRL secretion by isolated lactotrophs above (P < 0.05) basal levels during the 2- and 6-hr incubation. At the 18-hr time point, neither ppBASP nor vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) was efficacious (P < 0.05) in causing an elevation in PRL-secreting cells above basal levels. ppBASP, at all concentrations evaluated (0.25 BEQ/ml, 0.75 BEQ/ml, or 1.5 BEQ/ml), caused an increase in the percentage of GH-secreting cells above (P < 0.05) basal levels during the 18-hr incubation. When evaluating the 2-hr time point alone, ppBASP, at 0.75 or 1.5 BEQ/ml, significantly (P < 0.05) elevated the percentage of GH-secreting cells to above basal levels. After the 6-hr incubation, ppBASP at 0.25 or 0.75 BEQ/ml, was efficacious in causing elevated (P < 0.05) GH secretion above basal levels. The present study indicates a secretagogue activity of BASP on PRL or GH secretion by chicken embryonic anterior pituitary cells in vitro.

The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search experiment uses cooled germanium and silicon detectors for a direct search for weakly interacting massive particles in our Galaxy. The novel detectors allow a high degree of background rejection by discriminating between electron and nuclear recoils through the simultaneous measurement of the energy deposited in phonons and ionization. Exposures on the order of one kilogram-day from initial runs of our experiment yield (preliminary) upper limits on the WIMP-nucleon cross section that are comparable to much longer runs of other experiments. Current and future runs promise significant improvement, primarily due to improved detectors and reduced surface-electron backgrounds.

The purpose of the present investigation was to extend previous research conducted by our laboratory which demonstrated the suppressive effects of chicken bursa of Fabricius-derived bursal anti-steroidogenic peptide (BASP) on neonatal-chick B-lymphocyte mitogenesis. To test these anti-proliferative effects on lymphocytes derived from older animals, and to evaluate the phylogenetic applicability of these findings to other species, we evaluated the ability of BASP to alter proliferative indices in peripheral blood lymphocytes derived from adult chickens, rats and humans. Data from the present series of experiments confirm and extend our previous findings and suggest an anti-proliferative effect, exerted by BASP, on pools of isolated PBL from chickens, rats and humans, when measuring 3H-thymidine incorporation following mitogenic stimulation. While the present data was derived from limited numbers of pooled PBL, these findings may be indicative of a potential extra-bursal function of BASP on lymphocyte function.

A search for ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{e}$ oscillations has been conducted at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility using ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}$ from ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ decay in flight. An excess in the number of beam-related events from the ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{e}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{C}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}X$ inclusive reaction is observed. The excess is too large to be explained by normal ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{e}$ contamination in the beam at a confidence level greater than 99%. If interpreted as an oscillation signal, the observed oscillation probability of $(2.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.5)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ is consistent with the previously reported ${\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{e}$ oscillation evidence from LSND.
