Bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs) are excellent laboratories to explore the radiation-driven implosion mode of star formation because they show evidence of triggered star formation. In our previous study, BRC 18 has been found to accelerate away from the direction of the ionizing H ii region because of the well-known ‘Rocket Effect’. Based on the assumption that both BRC 18 and the candidate young stellar objects (YSOs) are kinematically coupled and using the latest Gaia EDR3 measurements, we found that the relative proper motions of the candidate YSOs exhibit a tendency of moving away from the ionizing source. Using BRC 18 as a prototype, we made our further analysis for 21 more BRCs, a majority of which showed a similar trend. For most of the BRCs, the median angle of the relative proper motion of the candidate YSOs is similar to the angle of on-sky direction from the ionizing source to the central IRAS source of the BRC. Based on the Pearson’s and Spearman’s correlation coefficients, we found a strong correlation between these two angles, which is further supported by the Kolmogorov–Smirnov (K−S) test on them. The strong correlation between these two angles supports the ‘Rocket Effect’ in the BRCs on the sky plane.

Clouds more massive than about $10^5$ M$_\odot$ are potential sites of massive cluster formation. Studying the properties of such clouds in the early stages of their evolution offers an opportunity to test various cluster formation processes. We make use of CO, Herschel, and UKIDSS observations to study one such cloud, G148.24+00.41. Our results show the cloud to be of high mass ($\sim$ $1.1\times10^5$ M$_\odot$), low dust temperature ($\sim$ 14.5 K), nearly circular (projected radius $\sim$ 26 pc), and gravitationally bound with a dense gas fraction of $\sim 18$% and a density profile with a power-law index of $\sim -1.5$. Comparing its properties with those of nearby molecular clouds, we find that G148.24+00.41 is comparable to the Orion-A molecular cloud in terms of mass, size, and dense gas fraction. From our analyses, we find that the central area of the cloud is actively forming protostars and is moderately fractal with a Q-value of $\sim$ 0.66. We also find evidence of global mass-segregation in the cloud, with a degree of mass-segregation ($\Lambda_{MSR}) \approx3.2$. We discuss these results along with the structure and compactness of the cloud, the spatial and temporal distribution of embedded stellar population, and their correlation with the cold dust distribution, in the context of high-mass cluster formation. Comparing our results with models of star cluster formation, we conclude that the cloud has the potential to form a cluster in the mass range $\sim$ 2000--3000 M$_\odot$ through dynamical hierarchical collapse and assembly of both gas and stars., Comment: It is accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS). R.; Zielinski, P., OJ 287 is a BL Lacertae type quasar in which the active galactic nucleus (AGN) outshines the host galaxy by an order of magnitude. The only exception to this may be at minimum light when the AGN activity is so low that the host galaxy may make quite a considerable contribution to the photometric intensity of the source. Such a dip or a fade in the intensity of OJ 287 occurred in 2017 November, when its brightness was about 1.75 mag lower than the recent mean level. We compare the observations of this fade with similar fades in OJ 287 observed earlier in 1989, 1999, and 2010. It appears that there is a relatively strong reddening of the B− V colours of OJ 287 when its V-band brightness drops below magnitude 17. Similar changes are also seen in V− R, V− I, and R− I colours during these deep fades. These data support the conclusion that the total magnitude of the host galaxy is V = 18.0 ± 0.3, corresponding to MK = −26.5 ± 0.3 in the K-band. This is in agreement with the results, obtained using the integrated surface brightness method, from recent surface photometry of the host. These results should encourage us to use the colour separation method also in other host galaxies with strongly variable AGN. In the case of OJ 287, both the host galaxy and its central black hole are among the biggest known, and its position in the black hole mass–galaxy mass diagram lies close to the mean correlation. © 2022 The Author(s). We present the abundance analyses of 7 Carbon enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars to understand the origin of carbon in them. We used high-resolution optical spectra to derive abundances of various elements. We also used low-resolution Near-Infrared (NIR) spectra to derive the abundance of O and 12C/13C from the CO molecular band and compared their values with those derived from high-resolution optical spectra. We identified a good agreement between the values. Thus, in cool CEMP stars, the NIR observations complement the high-resolution optical observations to derive the oxygen abundance and the 12C/13C ratio. This enables us to probe fainter cool CEMP stars using NIR spectroscopy. C, N, O abundances of all the program stars in this study show abundances that are consistent with binary mass transfer from a low-mass low-metallicity Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) companion which is further supported by the presence of enhancement in neutron-capture elements and detection of radial velocity variation. One of the stars show abundance patterns similar to a CEMP-s star whereas the abundance pattern of the rest of the stars satisfy the criteria required to classify them as CEMP-r/s stars. The sub-classification of some of the stars studied here is revisited. The abundance of neutron capture elements in these CEMP-r/s stars resembles to that of i-process models where proton ingestion episodes in the companion low-mass low-metallicity AGB stars produce the necessary neutron density required for the onset of i-process., 18 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Dust polarization observations at optical wavelengths help to understand the dust grain properties and trace the plane-of-the-sky component of the magnetic field. In this study, we make use of the $I$-band polarization data acquired from AIMPOL along with the distances ($d$) and extinction ($A_{V}$) data to study the variation of polarization fraction ($P$) as a function of $A_{V}$ and $d$ towards the star-forming region, NGC 1893. We employ a broken power-law fit and Bayesian analysis on extinction ($A_{V}$) versus polarization efficiency ($P$/$A_{V}$) and distance ($d$) versus rate of polarization ($P$/$d$). We find that $P$/$A_{V}$ shows a break at an extinction of $\sim$0.9 mag, whereas $P/d$ exhibits a break at a distance of $\sim$1.5 kpc. Based on these, we categorize the dust towards NGC 1893 into two populations: (i) foreground dust confined to $A_{V}$ $$ $\sim$1 mag and distance beyond $\sim$2 kpc. Foreground dust exhibits higher polarization efficiency but a lower polarization rate, whereas Perseus dust shows a lower polarization efficiency but a slightly higher polarization rate. Hence, we suggest that while polarization efficiency reveals the dust grain alignment, the rate of polarization infers about the distribution of dust grains towards NGC 1893. The star-forming activity in the HII region RCW 42 is investigated using multiple wavebands, from near-infrared to radio wavelengths. Located at a distance of 5.8 kpc, this southern region has a bolometric luminosity of 1.8 $\times$ 10$^6$ L$_{\odot}$. The ionized gas emission has been imaged at low radio frequencies of 610 and 1280 MHz using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, India and shows a large expanse of the HII region, spanning $20\times 15$ pc$^2$. The average electron number density in the region is estimated to be $\sim70$ cm$^{-3}$, which suggests an average ionization fraction of the cloud to be $11\%$. An extended green object EGO G274.0649-01.1460 and several young stellar objects have been identified in the region using data from the 2MASS and Spitzer surveys. The dust emission from the associated molecular cloud is probed using Herschel Space Telescope, which reveals the presence of 5 clumps, C1-C5, in this region. Two millimetre emission cores of masses 380 and 390 M$_{\odot}$ towards the radio emission peak have been identified towards C1 from the ALMA map at 1.4 mm. The clumps are investigated for their evolutionary stages based on association with various star-formation tracers, and we find that all the clumps are in active/evolved stage., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables, Accepted by MNRAS

The Infrared Astronomy Group (Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics) at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) is presently developing controllers for the Teledyne HxRG Focal Plane Arrays (FPAs) to be used on board the Infrared Spectroscopic Imaging Survey (IRSIS) satellite payload. In this manuscript we discuss the results of our tests with different FPA controllers like the Astronomical Research Cameras (ARC) controller, Teledyne's SIDECAR ASIC as well as our new in-house designed Array controller. As part of the development phase of the IRSIS instrument, which is an optical fibre based Integral Field Unit (IFU) Near-Infrared (NIR) Spectrometer, a laboratory model with limited NIR bandwidth was built which consisted of various subsystems like a Ritchey-Chretien (RC) 30 cm telescope, optical fibre IFU, spectrometer optics, and the Teledyne H2RG detector module. We report on 26 lunar occultation events observed in the context of a program started at Devasthal in 2017. In addition to the customary observations with the 1.3-m telescope, we report here also the first attempts performed with the TIRCAM2 camera at the 3.6-m DOT telescope in the near-IR. The results consist in the first-time angular diameters for two late-type giants, in a measurement of the well-known AGB pulsating variable SW~Vir, and in the measurement of eight small separation binaries one of which is detected for the first time (HR~1860). We also measured the wider binaries SAO~94431 and 55~Tau (twice). The remaining sources were found to be unresolved with upper limits as small as 1~milliarcsecond. We plan to develop further the high-speed capability of the TIRCAM2 instrument, so as to include in our program also more near-infrared, highly extincted sources., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS main journal, 7 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables

We present a multi-wavelength investigation of a large-scale physical system containing the W33 complex. The extended system (~50 pc x 37 pc) is selected based on the distribution of molecular gas at [29.6, 60.2] km/s and of 88 ATLASGAL 870 micron dust clumps at d ~2.6 kpc. The extended system/molecular cloud traced in the maps of 13CO and C18O emission contains several HII regions excited by OB stars (age ~0.3-1.0 Myr) and a thermally supercritical filament ("fs1", length ~17 pc). The filament, devoid of the ionized gas, shows dust temperature (T_d) of ~19 K, while the HII regions are depicted with T_d of ~21-29 K. It suggests the existence of two distinct environments in the cloud. The distribution of Class I young stellar objects (mean age ~0.44 Myr) traces the early stage of star formation (SF) toward the cloud. At least three velocity components (around 35, 45, and 53 km/s) are investigated toward the system. The analysis of 13CO and C18O reveals the spatial and velocity connections of cloud components around 35 and 53 km/s. The observed positions of previously known sources, W33 Main, W33 A and O4-7I stars, are found toward a complementary distribution of these two cloud components. The filament "fs1" and a previously known object W33 B are seen toward the overlapping areas of the clouds, where ongoing SF activity is evident. A scenario concerning the converging/colliding flows from two different velocity components appears to explain well the observed signposts of SF activities in the system., Comment: 18 Pages, 10 Figures, 2 Tables, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present line and continuum observations (resolution ~0.3"-3.5") made with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), Submillimeter Array, and Very Large Array of a young O-type protostar W42-MME (mass: 19-4 Msun). The ALMA 1.35 mm continuum map (resolution ~1") shows that W42-MME is embedded in one of the cores (i.e., MM1) located within a thermally supercritical filament-like feature (extent ~0.15 pc) containing three cores (mass ~1-4.4 Msun). Several dense/hot gas tracers are detected toward MM1, suggesting the presence of a hot molecular core with the gas temperature of ~38-220~K. The ALMA 865 micron continuum map (resolution ~0.3") reveals at least five continuum sources/peaks ("A-E") within a dusty envelope (extent ~9000 AU) toward MM1, where shocks are traced in the SiO(8-7) emission. The source "A" associated with W42-MME is seen almost at the center of the dusty envelope, and is surrounded by other continuum peaks. The ALMA CO(3-2) and SiO(8-7) line observations show the bipolar outflow extended below 10000 AU, which is driven by the source "A". The ALMA data hint the episodic ejections from W42-MME. A disk-like feature (extent ~2000 AU; mass ~1 Msun) with velocity gradients is investigated in the source "A" (dynamical mass ~9 Msun) using the ALMA H13CO+ emission, and is perpendicular to the CO outflow. A small-scale feature (below 3000 AU) probably heated by UV radiation from the O-type star is also investigated toward the source "A". We report the discovery of a very dense jet-like fast molecular outflow surrounded by a wide-angle wind in a massive young stellar object (MYSO) G18.88MME (stellar mass $\sim$8 M$_{\odot}$) powering an Extended Green Object G18.89$-$0.47. Four cores MM1-4 are identified in the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 1.3 mm continuum map (resolution $\sim$0.$"$8) toward G18.88MME, and are seen at the center of the emission structure (extent $\sim$0.3 pc $\times$ 0.2 pc) detected in the ALMA map. G18.88MME is embedded in the core MM1 (mass $\sim$13-18 M$_{\odot}$), where no radio continuum emission is detected. The molecular outflow centered at MM1 is investigated in the SiO(5-4), HC$_{3}$N(24-23) and $^{13}$CO(2-1) lines. The detection of HC$_{3}$N in the outflow is rare in MYSOs and indicates its very high density. The position-velocity diagrams display a fast narrow outflow (extent $\sim$28000 AU) and a slower wide-angle more extended outflow toward MM1, and both of these components show a transverse velocity gradient indicative of a possible rotation. All these observed features together make G18.88MME as a unique object for studying the unification of the jet-driven and wind-driven scenarios of molecular outflows in MYSOs., 5 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

Bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs) are ideal candidates to study radiation-driven implosion mode of star formation as they are potential sites of triggered star formation, located at the edges of Hii regions, showing evidence of ongoing star formation processes. BRC 18 is located towards the eastern edge of relatively closer (∼400 pc) H ii region excited by λ Ori. We made R-band polarimetric observations of 17 candidate young stellar objects (YSOs) located towards BRC 18 to investigate any preferred orientation of the discs with respect to the ambient magnetic field and the direction of energetic photons from λ Ori. We found that the discs are oriented randomly with respect to the projected magnetic field. Using distances and proper motions from the Gaia EDR3 of the candidate YSOs, we investigated the possible acceleration of BRC 18, away from λ Ori due to the well-known ‘Rocket Effect’, by assuming that both the candidate YSOs and BRC 18 are kinematically coupled. The relative proper motions of the candidate YSOs are found to show a trend of moving away from λ Ori. We computed the offset between the angle of the direction of the ionization front and the relative proper motion of the candidate YSOs and found it to lie close to being parallel to each other. Additionally, we found 12 sources that are co-moving with the known candidate YSOs towards BRC 18. These co-moving sources are most likely to be young and are missed in previous surveys conducted to identify potential YSOs of the region.

We present a comprehensive multiwavelength investigation of a likely massive young cluster `IRAS 05100+3723' and its environment with the aim to understand its formation history and feedback effects. We find that IRAS 05100+3723 is a distant ($\sim$3.2 kpc), moderate mass ($\sim$500 \msun), young ($\sim$3 Myr) cluster with its most massive star being an O8.5V-type. From spectral modeling, we estimate the effective temperature and log $g$ of the star as $\sim$33,000 K and $\sim$3.8, respectively. Our radio continuum observations reveal that the star has ionized its environment forming an HII region of size $\sim$2.7 pc, temperature $\sim$5,700 K, and electron density $\sim$165 cm$^{-3}$. However, our large-scale dust maps reveal that it has heated the dust up to several parsecs ($\sim$10 pc) in the range 17$-$28 K and the morphology of warm dust emission resembles a bipolar HII region. From dust and $^{13}$CO gas analyses, we find evidences that the formation of the HII region has occurred at the very end of a long filamentary cloud around 3 Myr ago, likely due to edge collapse of the filament. We show that the HII region is currently compressing a clump of mass $\sim$2700 \msun at its western outskirts, at the junction of the HII region and filament. We observe several 70 $\mu$m point sources of intermediate-mass and class 0 nature within the clump. We attribute these sources as the second generation stars of the complex. We propose that the star formation in the clump is either induced or being facilitated by the compression of the expanding HII region onto the inflowing filamentary material., Comment: ApJ, accepted

The paper presents an analysis of multi-wavelength data of two Lynds Bright Nebulae (LBN), LBN 140.07+01.64 and LBN 140.77$-$1.42. The 1420 MHz continuum map reveals an extended Y-shaped feature (linear extent ~3.7 deg), which consists of a linear part and a V-like structure. The sites LBN 140.07+01.64 and AFGL 437 are located toward the opposite sides of the V-like structure, and LBN 140.77$-$1.42 is spatially seen toward the linear part. Infrared-excess sources are traced toward the entire Y-feature, suggesting star formation activities. Infrared and sub-millimeter images show the presence of at least two large-scale dust filaments extended toward the LBN sources. The Herschel maps, which are available only toward the northern and central parts of the Y-feature, display the presence of higher column density (> 2.4 X 10^{21} cm^{-2}) of materials toward the filaments. Using the 12CO(1-0) line data, the distribution of molecular gas at [-42.7, -34.4] km/s traces the cloud associated with the Y-feature, and confirms the existence of filaments. The large-scale filaments appear to be possibly spatially twisted. There is a hint of an oscillatory-like velocity pattern along both the filaments, favouring their proposed twisted nature. It is the first study showing the possible twisting of filaments, which is more prominent in the northern and central parts of the Y-feature. This possible twisting/coupling of the large-scale filaments appears to be responsible for the observed star formation (including known OB-stars). We report an observational study of the Galactic HII region Sh 2-305/S305 using the [CII] 158 $\mu$m line data, which are used to examine the gas dynamics and structure of photodissociation regions. The integrated [CII] emission map at [39.4, 49.5] km s$^{-1}$ spatially traces two shell-like structures (i.e., inner and outer neutral shells) having a total mass of $\sim$565 M$_\odot$. The inner neutral shell encompasses an O9.5V star at its centre and has a compact ring-like appearance. However, the outer shell is seen with more extended and diffuse [CII] emission, hosting an O8.5V star at its centre and surrounds the inner neutral shell. The velocity channel maps and position-velocity diagrams confirm the presence of a compact [CII] shell embedded in the diffuse outer shell, and both the shells seem to expand with $v_{\rm exp}\sim$1.3 km s$^{-1}$. The outer shell appears to be older than the inner shell, hinting that these shells are formed sequentially. The [CII] profiles are examined toward S305, which are either double-peaked or blue-skewed and have the brighter redshifted component. The redshifted and blueshifted components spatially trace the inner and outer neutral shell geometry, respectively. The ionized, neutral, and molecular zones in S305 are seen adjacent to one another around the O-type stars. The regularly spaced dense molecular and dust clumps (mass $\sim$10-10$^{3}$ M$_{\odot}$) are investigated around the neutral shells, which might have originated due to gravitational instability in the shell of collected materials., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

The large fraction of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars at lower metallicities makes them an interesting class of objects to be probed further in greater detail. They show different abundance patterns of neutron-capture elements and based on that CEMP stars are further divided into four categories. Abundances of C, N and O, along with other elements, are required to understand the different nucleosynthetic origins of the subclasses and their progenitors. We studied nine bright carbon-enhanced stars from the Milky Way halo in a metallicity range from −0.8 to −2.5. They show enhancement in C, N, O and Ba and exhibit radial velocity variation. This indicates the presence of a binary companion which might have contributed to the enhanced carbon and s-process abundance through mass transfer during its asymptotic-giant-branch (AGB) phase of evolution. Their abundance pattern of C, N and O favors low-mass nature for their binary companion.

High resolution infrared imaging observations of the young planetary nebulae (PNe) NGC 7027 and BD +30° 3639, taken with the newly installed TIFR near infrared camera-II (TIRCAM2) on 3.6 m Devasthal optical telescope (DOT), ARIES, Nainital, are being reported. The images are acquired in J, H, K, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and narrow-band L (nbL) filters. The observations show emission from warm dust and PAHs in the circumstellar shells. The imaging of the two objects are among the first observations in PAH and nbL bands using TIRCAM2 on DOT. The NGC 7027 images in all bands show similar elliptical morphology with $$\sim $$ 6 $$^{\prime \prime }$$ .7 and $$\sim $$ 4 $$^{\prime \prime }$$ .5 semi-major and semi-minor axes. Considering size up to 10% of peak value the nebula extends upto 8 $$^{\prime \prime }$$ from the central star revealing a multipolar evolution. The relatively cooler BD +30° 3639 shows a rectangular-ring shaped nebula. In J and H bands it shows an angular diameter of $$\sim $$ 8 $$^{\prime \prime }$$ , while a smaller $$\sim $$ 6 $$^{\prime \prime }$$ .9 size is observed in K, PAH and nbL bands. The 3.28 $$\mu $$ m emission indicates presence of PAHs at about 6000 and 5000 AU from the central stars in NGC 7027 and BD +30° 3639 respectively. Analysis suggests domination of neutral PAHs in BD +30° 3639, while in NGC 7027 there is higher ionization and more processed PAH population.

We report the observational findings of the Sh2-112 H{\sc ii} region by using the multiwavelength data analysis ranging from optical to radio wavelengths. This region is powered by a massive O8V-type star BD +45 3216. The surface density distribution and minimum spanning tree analyses of the young stellar object (YSO) candidates in the region reveal their groupings toward the western periphery of the H{\sc ii} region. A GMRT radio continuum emission peak is found toward the north-west boundary of the H{\sc ii} region and is investigated as a compact/ultra-compact H{\sc ii} region candidate powered by a B0-B0.5 type star. Toward the south-west direction, a prominent curved rim-like structure is found in the H$\alpha$ image and GMRT radio continuum maps, where the H$_2$ and $^{13}$CO emission is also observed. These results suggest the existence of the ionized boundary layer (IBL) on the surface of the molecular cloud. This IBL is found to be over-pressurized with respect to the internal pressure of the surrounding molecular cloud. This implies that the shocks are propagating/ propagated into the molecular cloud and the young stars identified within it are likely triggered due to the massive star. It is also found that this region is ionization bounded toward the west-direction and density bounded toward the east-direction. Based on the distribution of the ionized gas, molecular material, and the YSO candidates; we propose that the Sh2-112 H{\sc ii} region is a good candidate for the blister-type H{\sc ii} region which has been evolved on the surface of a cylindrical molecular cloud., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Ionospheric data assimilation method has been highly successful for forecasting spatial and temporal ionospheric variability. In this paper, an attempt is made to improve International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) model predictions over Indian region using Kalman filter approach of data assimilation. To image the ionospheric vertical total electron content (VTEC) over the entire Indian geographical region the TEC observations from Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, GPS radio occultation ray paths and ionosonde datasets are utilized. The nonstationary background error covariance matrix and covariance localization are implemented including the solar and geomagnetic indices through multivariate principal component analysis (MPCA) method to obtain better ionospheric VTEC forecast. The proposed regional ionospheric VTEC model is named as Assimilated Indian Regional VerticAl TEC (AIRAVAT) model that generates forecast and analysis maps with 15 minutes of temporal resolution and 1° x 1° spatial resolution along 5° N to 40° N geographic latitudes and 65° E to 100° E geographic longitudes. The focus is to realize the variations in equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) structures over the Indian region during geomagnetic storm conditions. AIRAVAT Model behavior during a major geomagnetic storm day of solar cycle 24 i.e., 17th and 18th March 2015 are presented. International Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Service (IGS) stations at Hyderabad (HYDE), Lucknow (LCK4) and Lhasa (LHAZ) locations are considered as truth data for model validation.

We present multi-scale and multi-wavelength observations of the Galactic HII region S305, which is excited by massive O8.5V and O9.5V stars. Infrared images reveal an extended sphere-like shell (extension ~7.5 pc; at T_d = 17.5-27 K) enclosing the S305 HII region (size ~5.5 pc; age ~1.7 Myr). The extended structure observed in the Herschel temperature map indicates that the molecular environment of S305 is heated by the massive O-type stars. Regularly spaced molecular condensations and dust clumps are investigated toward the edges of the infrared shell, where the PAH and H_2 emission is also observed. The molecular line data show a signature of an expanding shell of molecular gas in S305. GMRT 610 and 1280 MHz continuum maps reveal overdensities of the ionized emission distributed around two O-type stars, which are surrounded by the horseshoe envelope (extension ~2.3 pc). A molecular gas deficient region/cavity is identified toward the center of the horseshoe envelope, which is well traced with PAH, H_2, molecular, and dust emission. The edges of the infrared shell are found to be located in the front of the horseshoe envelope. All these outcomes provide the observational evidence of the feedback of O-type stars in S305. Moreover, non-thermal radio emission is detected in S305 with an average spectral index alpha ~-0.45. We present here quantitative diagnostic tools for cool giants that employ low-resolution near-infrared spectroscopy in the $K$-band for stellar population studies. In this study, a total of 260 cool giants (177 stars observed with X-shooter and 83 stars observed with NIFS) are used covering a wider metallicity range than in earlier works. We measure equivalent widths of some of the selected important $K$-band spectral features like Na I, Fe I, and $^{12}$CO after degrading the spectral resolution (R $\sim$ 1200) to investigate the spectral behavior with fundamental parameters (e.g. effective temperature and metallicity). We derive empirical relations to measure effective temperature using the $^{12}$CO first-overtone band at 2.29 $\mu$m and 2.32 $\mu$m and show a detailed quantitative metallicity dependence of these correlations. We find that the empirical relations based on solar-neighborhood stars can incorporate large uncertainty in evaluating $T_{eff}$ for metal-poor or metal-rich stars. Furthermore, we explore all the spectral lines to establish the empirical relation with metallicity and find that the quadratic fit of the combination of Na I and $^{12}$CO at 2.29 $\mu$m lines yields a reliable empirical relation at [$Fe/H$] $\leq$ $-$0.4 dex, while a linear fit of any line offers a good metallicity scale for stars having [$Fe/H$] $\geq$ 0.0 dex., Comment: 15 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present an analysis of multi-wavelength observations of an area of 0.27 deg x 0.27 deg around the Galactic HII region G18.88-0.49, which is powered by an O-type star (age ~10^5 years). The Herschel column density map reveals a shell-like feature of extension ~12 pc x 7 pc and mass ~2.9 x 10^4 Msun around the HII region; its existence is further confirmed by the distribution of molecular (12CO, 13CO, C18O, and NH3) gas at [60, 70] km/s. Four subregions are studied toward this shell-like feature, and show a mass range of ~0.8-10.5 x 10^3 Msun. These subregions associated with dense gas are dominated by non-thermal pressure and supersonic non-thermal motions. The shell-like feature is associated with the HII region, Class I protostars, and a massive protostar candidate, illustrating the ongoing early phases of star formation (including massive stars). The massive protostar is found toward the position of the 6.7 GHz methanol maser, and is associated with outflow activity. Five parsec-scale filaments are identified in the column density and molecular maps, and appear to be radially directed to the dense parts of the shell-like feature. This configuration is referred to as a "hub-filament" system. Significant velocity gradients (0.8-1.8 km/s/pc) are observed along each filament, suggesting that the molecular gas flows towards the central hub along the filaments. Overall, our observational findings favor a global non-isotropic collapse scenario as discussed in Motte et al. Most recent numerical simulations suggest that bipolar HII regions, powered by O-type stars, can be formed at the interface of two colliding clouds. To observationally understand the birth of O-type stars, we present a detailed multi-wavelength analysis of an area of 1 deg x 1 deg hosting G8.14+0.23 HII region associated with an infrared bipolar nebula (BPN). Based on the radio continuum map, the HII region is excited by at least an O-type star, which is located toward the waist of the BPN. The NANTEN2 13CO line data reveal the existence of two extended clouds at [9, 14.3] and [15.3, 23.3] km/s toward the site G8.14+0.23, which are connected in the position-velocity space through a broad-bridge feature at the intermediate velocity range. A "cavity/intensity-depression" feature is evident in the blueshifted cloud, and is spatially matched by the "elongated redshifted cloud". The spatial and velocity connections of the clouds suggest their interaction in the site G8.14+0.23. The analysis of deep near-infrared photometric data reveals the presence of clusters of infrared-excess sources, illustrating ongoing star formation activities in both the clouds. The O-type star is part of the embedded cluster seen in the waist of the BPN, which is observed toward the spatial matching zone of the cavity and the redshifted cloud. Size-segregated aerosol vertical profiles in the troposphere are critically important for source attribution, transformation processes, atmospheric stability, and radiative forcing. For the first time, the development of a 6-stage impactor for real-time balloon-borne measurements of size-segregated (cutoff diameter [Dae]: 0.15–5 µm) aerosol mass concentrations in the free troposphere was tested during spring 2016 over Hyderabad, India, is presented. Total aerosol mass concentrations obtained with the 6-stage impactor (MTI) and a co-located optical particle counter (MTOPC) measurements at the surface under ambient conditions agreed to within 15%. The effect of aerosol particle growth on the MTI data are assessed using an urban aerosol particle model by scaling mass concentration of water-soluble (hydrophilic) aerosol particles at ambient relative humidity (RH) to that at RH = 50%. An overall uncertainty of the measurement of the MTI was estimated to be about 19%. The altitude variation of size-segregated mass concentrations of aerosol particles along with thermodynamic variables depicted convectively well-mixed layer extending up to about 4.5 km within which aerosol particles showed two distinct layers, one at ∼2 km and another at about 4.5 km. The size-resolved air samples containing aerosol particles collected using the balloon-borne 6-stage impactor will be useful for their chemical characterization and also long-range transport studies. We present the results based on the optical $R$-band polarization observations of 280 stars distributed towards the dark globule LDN\,1225. {\it Gaia} data release 2 parallaxes along with the polarization data of $\sim$200 stars have been used to (a) constrain the distance of LDN\,1225 as 830$\pm$83~pc, (b) determine the contribution of interstellar polarization (ISP), and (c) characterize the dust properties and delineate the magnetic field (B-field) morphology of LDN\,1225. We find that B-fields are more organized and exhibit a small dispersion of 12$\degr$. Using the $^{12}$CO molecular line data from the Purple Mountain Observatory (PMO), along with the column density, dispersion in B-fields, we estimate B-field strength to be $\sim$56\,$\pm$\,10\,$\mu$G, magnetic to turbulence pressure to be $\sim$3\,$\pm$\,2, and the mass-to-magnetic flux ratio (in units of critical value) to be~$, Comment: 32 Pages, 19 Figures, and 7 Tables. Optical and NIR observations of the type Ia supernova SN 2014J in M82 are presented. The observed light curves are found to be similar to normal SNe Ia, with a decline rate parameter $\Delta m_{15}(B) = 1.08 \pm 0.03$. The supernova reached $B$-band maximum on JD 2456690.14, at an apparent magnitude $m_B(max) = 11.94$. The optical spectra show a red continuum with deep interstellar Na~{\sc i} absorption, but otherwise resemble those of normal SNe Ia. The Si~{\sc ii} $\lambda 6355$ feature indicates a velocity of $\sim 12\,000$ km s$^{-1}$ at $B$-band maximum, which places SN 2014J at the border of the Normal Velocity and High Velocity group of SNe Ia. The velocity evolution of SN 2014J places it in the Low Velocity Gradient subclass, whereas the equivalent widths of Si~{\sc ii} features near $B$-band maximum place it at the border of the Core Normal and Broad Line subclasses of SNe Ia. An analytic model fit to the bolometric light curve indicates that a total of $\sim 1.3$ M$_{\odot}$ was ejected in the explosion, and the ejected $^{56}$Ni mass $M_{Ni} \sim 0.6$ M$_{\odot}$. The low [Fe~{\sc iii}] $\lambda4701$ to [Fe~{\sc ii}] $\lambda5200$ ratio in the nebular spectra of SN 2014J hints towards clumpiness in the ejecta. Optical broadband, linear polarimetric observations of SN 2014J obtained on four epochs indicate an almost constant polarization ($P_{\rm R} \sim$2.7 per cent; $\theta$ $\sim$37$^\circ$), which suggests that the polarization signal is of interstellar origin., Comment: 16 pages, 21 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

To probe the star formation (SF) process, we present a thorough multi-wavelength investigation of several H II regions located toward l = 24.8 deg, b = 0.1 deg. A system of at least five H II regions including the mid-infrared bubble N36 (hereafter "system N36"; extension ~35 pc) is observationally investigated, and is located at a distance of 6.0 kpc. With this distance, the system N36 is found to be situated at the interface of the Galactic bar and the Norma Galactic arm in our Galaxy, where one may expect the collisions of molecular clouds due to the bar potential. Each H II region (dynamical age ~0.4 - 1.3 Myr) in the system is powered by an O-type star. The system contains 27 ATLASGAL dust clumps at 870 micron. Several clumps are massive (> 10^3 M_sun), and have high bolometric luminosity (> 10^3 L_sun). Using the GRS 13CO line data, in the direction of the system N36, two velocity components are found around 109 and 113 km/s, and are linked in the velocity space. The morphological analysis of 13CO favours the presence of interacting molecular clouds in the system. Four H II regions and two 6.7 GHz masers are spatially observed at the common areas of the two clouds. The analysis of the Spitzer photometric data also traces the noticeable SF activity in the system. W4 is a giant H{\sc ii} region ionized by the OB stars of the cluster IC~1805. The H{\sc ii} region/cluster complex has been a subject of numerous investigations as it is an excellent laboratory for studying the feedback effect of massive stars on the surrounding region. However, the low-mass stellar content of the cluster IC~1805 remains poorly studied till now. With the aim to unravel the low-mass stellar population of the cluster, we present the results of a multiwavelength study based on deep optical data obtained with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, infrared data from 2MASS, $Spitzer$ Space Telescope and X-ray data from $Chandra$ Space Telescope. The present optical dataset is complete enough to detect stars down to 0.2~M$_\odot$, which is the deepest optical observations so far for the cluster. We identified 384 candidate young stellar objects (YSOs; 101 Class I/II and 283 Class III) within the cluster using various colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams. We inferred the mean age of the identified YSOs to be $\sim$ 2.5 Myr and mass in the range 0.3 - 2.5 M$_\odot$. The mass function of our YSO sample has a power law index of -1.23 $\pm$ 0.23, close to the Salpeter value (-1.35), and consistent with those of other star-forming complexes. We explored the disk evolution of the cluster members and found that the diskless sources are relatively older compared to the disk bearing YSO candidates. We examined the effect of high-mass stars on the circumstellar disks and found that within uncertainties, the influence of massive stars on the disk fraction seems to be insignificant. Deep optical photometric data on the NGC 7538 region were collected and combined with archival data sets from $Chandra$, 2MASS and {\it Spitzer} surveys in order to generate a new catalog of young stellar objects (YSOs) including those not showing IR excess emission. This new catalog is complete down to 0.8 M$_\odot$. The nature of the YSOs associated with the NGC 7538 region and their spatial distribution are used to study the star formation process and the resultant mass function (MF) in the region. Out of the 419 YSOs, $\sim$91\% have ages between 0.1 to 2.5 Myr and $\sim$86\% have masses between 0.5 to 3.5 M$_\odot$, as derived by spectral energy distribution fitting analysis. Around 24\%, 62\% and 2\% of these YSOs are classified to be the Class I, Class II and Class III sources, respectively. The X-ray activity in the Class I, Class II and Class III objects is not significantly different from each other. This result implies that the enhanced X-ray surface flux due to the increase in the rotation rate may be compensated by the decrease in the stellar surface area during the pre-main sequence evolution. Our analysis shows that the O3V type high mass star `IRS 6' might have triggered the formation of young low mass stars up to a radial distance of 3 pc. Bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs), illuminated and shaped by nearby OB stars, are potential sites of recent/ongoing star formation. Here we present an optical and infrared photometric study of three BRCs: BRC 5, BRC 7 and BRC 39 to obtain a census of the young stellar population, thereby inferring the star formation scenario, in these regions. In each BRC, the Class I sources are found to be located mostly near the bright rim or inside the cloud, whereas the Class II sources are preferentially outside, with younger sources closer to the rim. This provides strong support to sequential star formation triggered by radiation driven implosion due to the UV radiation. Moreover, each BRC contains a small group of young stars being revealed at its head, as the next-generation stars. In particular, the young stars at the heads of BRC 5 and BRC 7 are found to be intermediate/high mass stars, which, under proper conditions, may themselves trigger further star birth, thereby propagating star formation out to long distances., Comment: 30 pages, 7 Figures, 6 Tables, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

The southern Galactic high mass star-forming region, G351.6-1.3, is a HII region-molecular cloud complex with a luminosity of 2.0 x 10^5 L_sun, located at a distance of 2.4 kpc. In this paper, we focus on the investigation of the associated HII region, embedded cluster and the interstellar medium in the vicinity of G351.6-1.3. We address the identification of exciting source(s) as well as the census of stellar populations. The ionised gas distribution has been mapped using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), India at three continuum frequencies: 1280, 610 and 325 MHz. The HII region shows an elongated morphology and the 1280 MHz map comprises six resolved high density regions encompassed by diffuse emission spanning 1.4 pc x 1.0 pc. The zero age main-sequence (ZAMS) spectral type of the brightest radio core is O7.5. We have carried out near-infrared observations in the JHKs bands using the SIRIUS instrument on the 1.4 m Infrared Survey Facility (IRSF) telescope. The near-infrared images reveal the presence of a cluster embedded in nebulous fan-shaped emission. The log-normal slope of the K-band luminosity function of the embedded cluster is found to be 0.27 +- 0.03 and the fraction of the near-infrared excess stars is estimated to be 43%. These indicate that the age of the cluster is consistent with 1 Myr. The champagne flow model from a flat, thin molecular cloud is used to explain the morphology of radio emission with respect to the millimetre cloud and infrared brightness., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, To be published in MNRAS

The dense cloud associated with W40, one of the nearby H II regions, has been studied in millimeter-wave molecular lines and in 1.2 mm continuum. Besides, 1280 MHz and 610 MHz interferometric observations have been done. The cloud has complex morphological and kinematical structure, including a clumpy dust ring and an extended dense core. The ring is probably formed by the "collect and collapse" process due to the expansion of neighboring H II region. Nine dust clumps in the ring have been deconvolved. Their sizes, masses and peak hydrogen column densities are: $\sim 0.02-0.11$ pc, $\sim 0.4-8.1 M_{\odot}$ and $\sim (2.5-11)\times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$, respectively. Molecular lines are observed at two different velocities and have different spatial distributions implying strong chemical differentiation over the region. The CS abundance is enhanced towards the eastern dust clump 2, while the NH$_3$, N$_2$H$^+$, and H$^{13}$CO$^+$ abundances are enhanced towards the western clumps. HCN and HCO$^+$ do not correlate with the dust probably tracing the surrounding gas. Number densities derived towards selected positions are: $\sim (0.3-3.2)\times 10^6$ cm$^{-3}$. Two western clumps have kinetic temperatures 21 K and 16 K and are close to virial equilibrium. The eastern clumps 2 and 3 are more massive, have higher extent of turbulence and are probably more evolved than the western ones. They show asymmetric CS(2--1) line profiles due to infalling motions which is confirmed by model calculations. An interaction between ionized and neutral material is taking place in the vicinity of the eastern branch of the ring and probably trigger star formation., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

We present multi-wavelength analysis around mid-infrared bubble N14 to probe the signature of triggered star formation as well as the formation of new massive star(s) and/or cluster(s) on the borders of the bubble by the expansion of the H II region. Spitzer-IRAC ratio maps reveal that the bubble is traced by the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission following an almost circular morphology except in the south-west direction towards the low molecular density environment. The observational signatures of the collected molecular and cold dust material have been found around the bubble. We have detected 418 YSOs in the selected region around the bubble N14. Interestingly, the detected YSO clusters are associated with the collected molecular and cold dust material on the borders of the bubble. One of the clusters is found with deeply embedded intermediate mass and massive Class I YSOs associated with one of the dense dust clumps in the east of the bubble N14. We do not find a good agreement between the dynamical age of the H II region and the fragmentation time of the accumulated molecular materials to explain possible "collect-and-collapse" process around the bubble N14. Therefore, we suggest the possibility of triggered star formation by compression of the pre-existing dense clumps by the shock wave and/or small scale Jeans gravitational instabilities in the collected materials. We have also investigated 5 young massive embedded protostars (8 to 10 M_sun) and 15 intermediate mass (3 to 7 M_sun) Class I YSOs which are associated with the dust and molecular fragmented clumps at the borders of the bubble. We conclude that the expansion of the H II region is also leading to the formation of these intermediate and massive Class I YSOs around the bubble N14., 14 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables. We present a multiwavelength investigation of star formation activity towards the southern H II regions associated with IRAS 17160-3707, located at a distance of 6.2 kpc with a bolometric luminosity of 830000 Lsun.The ionised gas distribution and dust clumps in the parental molecular cloud are examined in detail using measurements at infrared, submillimeter and radio wavelengths.The radio continuum images at 1280 and 610 MHz obtained using Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope reveal the presence of multiple compact sources as well as nebulous emission.At submillimeter wavelengths, we identify seven dust clumps and estimate their physical properties like temperature: 24 - 30 K, mass: 300 - 4800 Msun and luminosity: 900 - 31700 Lsun using modified blackbody fits to the spectral energy distributions between 70 and 870 um.We find 24 young stellar objects in the mid-infrared, with few of them coincident with the compact radio sources.The spectral energy distributions of young stellar objects have been fitted by the Robitaille models and the results indicate that those having radio compact sources as counterparts host massive objects in early evolutionary stages with best fit age, 54 pages, 23 figures, Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal

We present a detailed multi-wavelength study of observations from X-ray, near-infrared to centimeter wavelengths to probe the star formation processes in the S237 region. Multi-wavelength images trace an almost sphere-like shell morphology of the region, which is filled with the 0.5--2 keV X-ray emission. The region contains two distinct environments - a bell-shaped cavity-like structure containing the peak of 1.4 GHz emission at center, and elongated filamentary features without any radio detection at edges of the sphere-like shell - where {\it Herschel} clumps are detected. Using the 1.4 GHz continuum and $^{12}$CO line data, the S237 region is found to be excited by a radio spectral type of B0.5V star and is associated with an expanding H{\sc ii} region. The photoionized gas appears to be responsible for the origin of the bell-shaped structure. The majority of molecular gas is distributed toward a massive {\it Herschel} clump (M$_{clump}$ $\sim$260 M$_{\odot}$), which contains the filamentary features and has a noticeable velocity gradient. The photometric analysis traces the clusters of young stellar objects (YSOs) mainly toward the bell-shaped structure and the filamentary features. Considering the lower dynamical age of the H\,{\sc ii} region (i.e. 0.2-0.8 Myr), these clusters are unlikely to be formed by the expansion of the H\,{\sc ii} region. Our results also show the existence of a cluster of YSOs and a massive clump at the intersection of filamentary features, indicating that the collisions of these features may have triggered cluster formation, similar to those found in Serpens South region., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures, 1 table, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present a detailed study of V899 Mon (a new member in the FUors/EXors family of young low-mass stars undergoing outburst), based on our long-term monitoring of the source starting from November 2009 to April 2015. Our optical and near-infrared photometric and spectroscopic monitoring recorded the source transitioning from its first outburst to a short duration quiescence phase ($, Comment: 21 pages, 24 figures, 5 Tables, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present multiwavelength optical linear polarimetric observations of 69 stars toward the young open cluster Be 59. The observations reveal the presence of three dust layers located at the distances of \sim300, \sim500 and \sim700 pc. The dust layers produce a total polarization Pv \sim 5.5 per cent. The mean values of polarization and polarization angles due to the dust layers are found to increase systematically with distance. We show that polarimetry in combination with the (U - B) - (B - V) colour-colour diagram yields a better identification of cluster members. The polarization measurements suggest that the polarization due the intra-cluster medium is \sim 2.2 per cent. An anomalous reddening law exists for the cluster region, indicating a relatively larger grain size than that in the diffuse ISM. The spatial variation of the polarization and E(B - V) is found to increase with radial distance from the cluster center, whereas the {\theta}v and {\lambda}max are found to decrease with increasing radial distance from the cluster center. About 40 per cent of cluster members show the signatures of either intrinsic polarization or rotation in their polarization angles. There is an indication that the star light of the cluster members might have been depolarized because of non-uniform alignment of dust grains in the foreground dust layers and in the intra-cluster medium.

The aim of this paper is to present the results of photometric investigations of the central cluster of the W5 E H II region as well as a follow-up study of the triggered star formation in and around bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs). We have carried out wide-field UBVI C and deep VI C photometry of the W5 E H II region. A distance of ∼2.1 kpc and a mean age of ∼1.3 Myr have been obtained for the central cluster. The young stellar objects (YSOs) associated with the region are identified on the basis of near-infrared and mid-infrared observations. We confirmed our earlier results that the average age of the YSOs lying on/inside the rim is younger than those lying outside the rim. The global distribution of the YSOs shows an aligned distribution from the ionizing source to the BRCs. These facts indicate that a series of radiation-driven implosion processes proceeded from near the central ionizing source towards the periphery of the W5 E H II region. We found that, in general, the age distributions of the Class II and Class III sources are the same. This result is apparently in contradiction to the conclusion by Bertout, Siess & Cabrit and Chauhan et al. that classical T Tauri stars evolve to weak-line T Tauri stars. The initial mass function of the central cluster region in the mass range 0.4 < M/M ⊙ ≤ 30 can be represented by Γ = ―1.29 ± 0.04. The cumulative mass functions indicate that in the mass range 0.2 ≤ M/M ⊙ ≤ 0.8, the cluster region and BRC NW have more low-mass YSOs compared to BRCs 13 and 14.

We present a comprehensive multi-wavelength analysis of the young cluster NGC 1624 associated with the H II region Sh2-212 using optical UBVRI photometry, optical spectroscopy and GMRT radio continuum mapping along with the near-infrared (NIR) JHK archival data. Reddening E(B-V) and distance to the cluster are estimated to be 0.76 - 1.00 mag and 6.0 +/- 0.8 kpc, respectively. Present analysis yields a spectral class of O6.5V for the main ionizing source of the region. The distribution of YSOs in (J-H)/ (H-K) NIR colour-colour diagram shows that a majority of them have A_V $\le$ 4 mag. Based on the NIR excess characteristics, we identified 120 probable candidate YSOs in this region which yield a disk frequency of ~ 20%. These YSOs are found to have an age spread of ~ 5 Myr with a median age of ~ 2-3 Myr and a mass range of ~ 0.1 - 3.0 $M_\odot$. A significant number of YSOs are located close to the cluster centre and we detect an enhanced density of reddened YSOs located/projected close to the molecular clumps at the periphery of NGC 1624. This indicates that the YSOs located within the cluster core are relatively older in comparison to those located/projected near the clumps. From the radio continuum flux, spectral class of the ionizing source of the ultra-compact H II region at the periphery of Sh2-212 is estimated to be ~ B0.5V. From optical data, slope of the mass function (MF) $\Gamma$, in the mass range $1.2 \le M/M_{\odot}

We present multi-wavelength linear polarimetric observations for 44 stars of the NGC 1893 young open cluster region along with V-band polarimetric observations of stars of other four open clusters located between l ~160 to ~175 degree. We found evidence for the presence of two dust layers located at a distance of ~170 pc and ~360 pc. The dust layers produce a polarization Pv ~2.2%. It is evident from the clusters studied in the present work that, in the Galactic longitude range l ~160 to 175 degree and within the Galactic plane (|b| < 2 degree), the polarization angles remain almost constant, with a mean ~163 degree and a dispersion of 6 degree. The small dispersion in polarization angle could be due to the presence of uniform dust layer beyond 1 kpc. Present observations reveal that in case of NGC 1893, the foreground two dust layers, in addition to the intracluster medium, seems to be responsible for the polarization effects. It is also found that towards the direction of NGC 1893, the dust layer that exists between 2-3 kpc has a negligible contribution towards the total observed polarization. The weighted mean for percentage of polarization (Pmax) and the wavelength at maximum polarization ({\lambda}max) are found to be 2.59 \pm 0.02% and 0.55 \pm 0.01 \mum respectively. The estimated mean value of {\lambda}max indicates that the average size of the dust grains within the cluster is similar to that in the general interstellar medium. The spatial variation of the polarization is found to decrease towards the outer region of the cluster. In the present work, we support the notion, as already has been shown in previous studies, that polarimetry, in combination with (U-B)/(B-V) colour-colour diagram, is a useful tool for identifying non-members in a cluster.

We present multiwavelength investigation of morphology, physical-environment, stellar contents and star formation activity in the vicinity of star-forming region Sh 2-100. It is found that the Sh 2-100 region contains seven HII regions of ultracompact and compact nature. The present estimation of distance for three HII regions, along with the kinematic distance for others, suggests that all of them belong to the same molecular cloud complex. Using NIR photometry, we identified the most probable ionizing sources of six HII regions. Their approximate photometric spectral type estimates suggest that they are massive early-B to mid-O ZAMS stars and agree well with radio continuum observations at 1280 MHz. The morphology of the complex shows a non-uniform distribution of warm and hot dust, well mixed with the ionized gas, which correlates well with the variation of average visual extinction (~ 4.2 - 97 mag) across the region. We estimated the physical parameters of ionized gas with the help of radio continuum observations. We detected an optically visible compact nebula located to the south of the 850 micron emission associated with one of the HII regions and the diagnostic of the optical emission line ratios gives electron density and electron temperature of ~ 0.67 x 10^3 cm^-3 and ~ 10^4 K, respectively. The physical parameters suggest that all the HII regions are in different stages of evolution, which correlate well with the probable ages in the range ~ 0.01 - 2 Myr of the ionizing sources. The positions of IR excess stars, ultracompact and compact HII regions at the periphery of an HI shell, possibly created by a WR star, indicate that star formation in Sh 2-100 region might have been induced by an expanding HI shell., Comment: 60 pages, 24 figures. We present a study of Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) point sources in the Galactic bulge (|l| < 3°, 1° < |b| < 5°), observed in the A, C, D and E bands (8–21μm), with a total area ∼48 deg2 and more than 7000 detected sources in the MSXD band (15 μm). We discuss the nature of the MSX sources [mostly asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars], their luminosities, the interstellar extinction, the mass-loss rate distribution and the total mass-loss rate in the bulge. The mid-infrared data of MSX point sources have been combined with the near-infrared (J, H and Ks) data of Two Micron All Sky Survey. The cross-identification was restricted to Ks-band detected sources with Ks≤ 11 mag. However, for those bright MSXD-band sources ([D] < 4.0 mag), which do not satisfy this criterion, we have set no Ks-band magnitude cut-off. The bolometric magnitudes and the corresponding luminosities of the MSX sources were derived by fitting blackbody curves. The relation between and (Ks−[15])0 was used to derive the mass-loss rate of each MSX source in the bulge fields. Except for very few post-AGB stars, planetary nebulae and OH/IR stars, a large fraction of the detected sources at 15 μm (MSXD band) are AGB stars well above the red giant branch tip. A number of them show an excess in ([A]−[D])0 and (Ks−[D])0 colours, characteristic of mass-loss. These colours, especially (Ks−[D])0, enable estimation of the mass-loss rates of the sources in the bulge fields which range from 10−7 to 10−4 M⊙ yr−1. Taking into consideration the completeness of the mass-loss rate bins, we find that the contribution to the integrated mass-loss is probably dominated by mass-loss rates larger than 3 × 10−7 M⊙ yr−1 and is about 1.96 × 10−4 M⊙ yr−1 deg−2 in the ‘intermediate’ and ‘outer’ bulge fields of sources with mass-loss rates, . The corresponding integrated mass-loss rate per unit stellar mass is 0.48 × 10−11 yr−1. Apart from this, the various mid- and near-infrared colour–colour and colour–magnitude diagrams are discussed in the paper to study the nature of the stellar population in the MSX bulge fields.

We present a comprehensive multi-wavelength study of the star-forming region NGC 1893 to explore the effects of massive stars on low-mass star formation. Using near-infrared colours, slitless spectroscopy and narrow-band $H\alpha$ photometry in the cluster region we have identified candidate young stellar objects (YSOs) distributed in a pattern from the cluster to one of the nearby nebulae Sim 129. The $V, (V-I)$ colour-magnitude diagram of the YSOs indicates that majority of these objects have ages between 1 to 5 Myr. The spread in the ages of the YSOs may indicate a non-coeval star formation in the cluster. The slope of the KLF for the cluster is estimated to be $0.34\pm0.07$, which agrees well with the average value ($\sim 0.4$) reported for young clusters. For the entire observed mass range $0.6 < M/M_\odot \le 17.7$ the value of the slope of the initial mass function, $`\Gamma$', comes out to be $-1.27\pm0.08$, which is in agreement with the Salpeter value of -1.35 in the solar neighborhood. However, the value of $`\Gamma$' for PMS phase stars (mass range $0.6 < M/M_\odot \le 2.0$) is found to be $-0.88\pm0.09$ which is shallower than the value ($-1.71\pm0.20$) obtained for MS stars having mass range $2.5 < M/M_\odot \le 17.7$ indicating a break in the slope of the mass function at $\sim 2 M_\odot$. Estimated $`\Gamma$' values indicate an effect of mass segregation for main-sequence stars, in the sense that massive stars are preferentially located towards the cluster center. The estimated dynamical evolution time is found to be greater than the age of the cluster, therefore the observed mass segregation in the cluster may be the imprint of the star formation process. There is evidence for triggered star formation in the region, which seems to govern initial morphology of the cluster.

We present a multi-wavelength study of the Sh2-138, a Galactic compact H II region. The data comprise of optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometric and spectroscopic observations from the 2-m Himalayan Chandra Telescope, radio observations from the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), and archival data covering radio through NIR wavelengths. A total of 10 Class I and 54 Class II young stellar objects (YSOs) are identified in a 4'.6$\times$4'.6 area of the Sh2-138 region. Five compact ionized clumps, with four lacking of any optical or NIR counterparts, are identified using the 1280 MHz radio map, and correspond to sources with spectral type earlier than B0.5. Free-free emission spectral energy distribution fitting of the central compact H II region yields an electron density of ~2250$\pm$400 cm$^{-3}$. With the aid of a wide range of spectra, from 0.5-15 $\mu m$, the central brightest source - previously hypothesised to be the main ionizing source - is characterized as a Herbig Be type star. At large scale (15'$\times$15'), the Herschel images (70-500 $\mu m$) and the nearest neighbour analysis of YSOs suggest the formation of an isolated cluster at the junction of filaments. Furthermore, using a greybody fit to the dust spectrum, the cluster is found to be associated with the highest column density (~3$\times$10$^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$) and high temperature (~35 K) regime, as well as with the radio continuum emission.
