1. Inner shear resistance increasing effect of Concrete Canvas in ballasted railway tracks

Abstract

Purpose. To prove that the GCCM (geosynthetic cementitious composite mat) – type Concrete Canvas (CC) – is an adequate supplementary layer on the top of the subgrade. As its drainage function is known, this article tries to prove the reinforcement possibility. This layer is relatively thin; nevertheless, it can behave like the geogrids. It is the main path to finding out the opportunity of the interlocking effect and its impact on the railway ballast’s inner shear resistance. Methodology. The laboratory measurements were performed in a multi-level shear box, which allows simulating the multi-level shift of the ballast layer. The tests were planned with and without the CC layer. After shearing, the samples were also tested for load-bearing capacity (E2; according to the Hungarian Standard) and particle breakage. On the other hand, the contact surface between the lowest part of the ballast and CC was also measured by a sophisticated 3D laser scanner (GOM ATOS) and graphically by AutoCAD software. Findings. After the results of the laboratory experiments are analyzed, the following parameters are calculated and determined: 1) the reinforcement ratio as the tangent of the inner shear resistance curves in the 5–15 mm horizontal shearing interval as well as the area under graphs by integration in the 0–40 mm interval; 2) the change in load-bearing capacity of the layer-structure with and without CC; 3) the amount of the cement particles; 4) the amount of the broken particles; 5) contact surface between the lowest layer of ballast and CC; 6) flatness of CC sheets after shearing. Based on the results, the Concrete Canvas provides significant reinforcement to the railway ballast. Originality. Any other type of measurement with Concrete Canvas in a multi-level shear box is unknown. The topic is unique. Practical value. In the future, these results may provide baseline data to verify the suitability of the Concrete Canvas in the railway sub- or superstructure for various types of transport.

2. SPECIFIC ASSESSMENT METHOD OF RAILWAY BALLAST PARTICLE DEGRADATION BASED ON UNIQUE LABORATORY TEST

Abstract

Purpose. There are specific, standardized laboratory test methods to assess railway ballast particle degradation; they are the Los Angeles (EN 1097-2) and the Micro-Deval abrasion (EN 1097-1) tests. These testing methods can’t take into consideration the real railway stress-strain circumstances of ballast materials, and they particles. In this paper the authors represent a specific laboratory fatigue breakage test of railway ballast materials. With this kind of testing method, the deterioration process of railway ballast particles can be assessed more realistic and precisely. Methodology. A special layer structure is built-up with elastic sublayer system and 30 cm thick ballast samples (from two different type andesite base rocks) that is loaded by dynamic, pulsating forces. Particle size distribution functions have to be recorded before and after a more million cycle fatigue test, but intermediate measurements are also executed. The measured data should be processed, and different parameters have to be calculated that are offered by international literature and researches. The test doesn’t consider the particle breakage due to hand-made and machine-made tamping, but it can simulate particle degradation due to more years’ railway traffic in laboratory circumstances. Findings. There is a development after the R&D work made and published in 2014: in 2017 and 2018 years the ballast particle deterioration process is given according to more intermediate fatigue cycles with individual measurements, that show more precise «picture» about the full particle degradation, i.e. breakage process. The authors give more precise correlation functions between the calculated parameters and load cycles during fatigue. Originality. The paper summed up the results of a specific developed laboratory test method for assessment of the breakage process of railway ballast particles according to two different railway ballast materials from andesite base rocks. Practical value. The results help with the calculation of approximate time interval of required ballast screening (cleaning) work in the future. 3. The Mutualistic Fungus Piriformospora indica Protects Barley Roots from a Loss of Antioxidant Capacity Caused by the Necrotrophic Pathogen Fusarium culmorum

Abstract

Fusarium culmorum causes root rot in barley (Hordeum vulgare), resulting in severely reduced plant growth and yield. Pretreatment of roots with chlamydospores of the mutualistic root-colonizing basidiomycete Piriformospora indica (subdivision Agaricomycotina) prevented necrotization of root tissues and plant growth retardation commonly associated with Fusarium root rot. Quantification of Fusarium infections with a real-time polymerase chain reaction assay revealed a correlation between root rot symptoms and the relative amount of fungal DNA. Fusarium-infected roots showed reduced levels of ascorbate and glutathione (GSH), along with reduced activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, GSH reductase, dehydroascorbate reductase, and monodehydroascorbate reductase. Consistent with this, Fusarium-infected roots showed elevated levels of lipid hydroperoxides and decreased ratios of reduced to oxidized forms of ascorbate and GSH. In clear contrast, roots treated with P. indica prior to inoculation with F. culmorum showed levels of ascorbate and GSH that were similar to controls. Likewise, lipid peroxidation and the overall reduction in antioxidant enzyme activities were largely attenuated by P. indica in roots challenged by F. culmorum. These results suggest that P. indica protects roots from necrotrophic pathogens, at least partly, through activating the plant's antioxidant capacity.

4. Numerical flexural strengthening investigation of timber-CFRP composite beams

Abstract

Timber is among the most important construction materials with unique characteristics in comparison with other materials for instance steel and concrete. It is one of the first sustainable materials and continues to be a favoured selection in the current infrastructure. In the last decade, to refine the mechanical properties of timber, structural elements reinforcing fiber polymers have developed. In this study, to improve the flexural properties of timber beams, carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates are attached externally and internally between timber layers. For numerical simulations, first finite element model was validated according to the data obtained from experimental tests, then a series of simulations with different parameters were executed to investigate the flexural behaviour. The considered parameters include CFRP laminates’ existence and position. The linear elastic orthotropic material model was used to represent linear behaviour while the 3D anisotropic Hill material model was assumed to define the nonlinear behaviour of the material. Finite element simulations are executed by commercial software ABAQUS.

5. The 114In level scheme studied by the (n, γ) reaction

Abstract

The level scheme of the nucleus 114 In has been studied using capture of thermal neutrons. The experimental information is taken from γ singles spectra and γ - γ coincidence spectra and from delayed coincidence measurements. Levels up to 1.4 MeV excitation energy are proposed. Several short lifetimes of excited states in 114 In and 116 In could be measured. The binding energy of the last neutron in 114 In, B n = 7273.9 ± 1.2 keV, determined in this work is in strong disagreement with previously accepted values. Additional experimental information on the 116 In level scheme is given. Six states of the ( π( g 9 2 ) −1 , ν h 11 2 ) multiplet (3 − to 8 − ) in 114 In. The expected close similarity between many low-lying states in 114 In and 116 In could be confirmed. In particular, it was found that the anomalous high isomeric cross-section ratio of the second isomeric state results from very selective reorientation transitions within the negative-parity multiplet. The coupling constant of the quadrupole part of the residual neutron-proton interaction obtained from a theoretical calculation of the 114 In level scheme is similar in size to that of 116 In, thus giving credit to the explanation given in our previous 116 In work. The splitting of multiplets in doubly odd In nuclei gives additional information for an interpretation of the so-called g 7 2 − h 11 2 anomaly in stripping studies near A = 110. Transition probability ratios B (M1)/ B (E2) and E1 hindrance factors are discussed for both 114 In and 116 In. No sign of states exhibiting stable deformation similar to those in odd- A In nuclei has been found up to now in the doubly odd In nuclei studied. There is some evidence that these doubly odd In nuclei behave more like Cd than like single closed shell Sn nuclei.

Abstract

The low-energy and high-energy γ-ray spectra associated with the reaction 115In(n,γ)116In have been measured with Ge(Li) detectors and a Ge(Li)-NaI(Tl) pair spectrometer. A γ-γ coincidence study has been performed using a Ge(Li)-Ge(Li) coincidence system. Combining these measurements with the results of (d, p) and other (n, γ) studies, a level scheme for 116In up to 1.4 MeV is proposed. In particular, seven states of the (π( g 9 2 −1 , v h 11 2 ) multiplet (3− to 9−) are unambiguously identified and the anomalous high isomeric cross-section ratio of the second isomeric state is explained. The binding energy Bn of the last neutron in 116In has been determined to be 6784.2±1.2 keV. From the energy splitting of the fairly pure high-spin states of the (π( g 9 2 −1 , v h 11 2 ) multiplet, the coupling constant of the quadrupole part of the residual proton-neutron interaction k2 is calculated in a spherical basis. The k2 obtained is about 5 times larger than the one normally used in calculations of quadrupole oscillations in doubly even nuclei. This discrepancy is discussed, and an explanation in terms of an isovector component of the quadrupole interaction is proposed.

Abstract

Multiplicities of charged hadrons produced in deep inelastic muon scattering off a $^6$LiD target have been measured as a function of the DIS variables $x_{Bj}$, $Q^2$, $W^2$ and the final state hadron variables $p_T$ and $z$. The $p_T^2$ distributions are fitted with a single exponential function at low values of $p_T^2$ to determine the dependence of $\langle p_T^2 \rangle$ on $x_{Bj}$, $Q^2$, $W^2$ and $z$. The $z$-dependence of $\langle p_T^2 \rangle$ is shown to be a potential tool to extract the average intrinsic transverse momentum squared of partons, $\langle k_{\perp}^2 \rangle$, as a function of $x_{Bj}$ and $Q^2$ in a leading order QCD parton model., 18 pages, 13 figures and 3 tables

Abstract

Large samples of \Lambda, \Sigma(1385) and \Xi(1321) hyperons produced in deep-inelastic muon scattering off a ^6LiD target were collected with the COMPASS experimental setup at CERN. The relative yields of \Sigma(1385)^+, \Sigma(1385)^-, \bar{\Sigma}(1385)^-, \bar{\Sigma}(1385)^+, \Xi(1321)^-, and \bar{\Xi}(1321)^+ hyperons decaying into \Lambda(\bar{\Lambda})\pi were measured. The heavy hyperon to \Lambda and heavy antihyperon to \bar{\Lambda} yield ratios were found to be in the range 3.8% to 5.6% with a relative uncertainty of about 10%. They were used to tune the parameters relevant for strange particle production of the LEPTO Monte Carlo generator., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures and 3 tables, 1 Appendix with 3 figures. Abstract

The production of D* and D mesons in inelastic scattering of 160 GeV/c muons off a ^6LiD target has been investigated with the COMPASS spectrometer at CERN for 0.003 (GeV/c)^2 < Q^2 < 10 (GeV/c)^2 and 3x10^-5< x_Bj < 0.1. The study is based on 8100 events where a D^0 or anti D^0 is detected subsequently to a D*+ or D*- decay, and on 34000 events, where only a D^0 or anti D^0 is detected. Kinematic distributions of D*, D and K*_2 are given as a function of their energy E, transverse momentum p_T, energy fraction z, and of the virtual photon variables nu, Q^2 and x_Bj. Semi-inclusive differential D* production cross-sections are compared with theoretical predictions for D* production via photon-gluon fusion into open charm. The total observed production cross-section for D*+/- mesons with laboratory energies between 22 and 86 GeV is 1.9 nb. Significant cross-section asymmetries are observed between D*+ and D*- production for nu0.6., 22 pages, 12 figures and 2 tables

Abstract

This research investigates the application of plastic fiber reinforcement in pre-tensioned reinforced concrete railway sleepers, conducting an in-depth examination in both experimental and computational aspects. Utilizing 3-point bending tests and the GOM ARAMIS system for Digital Image Correlation, this study meticulously evaluates the structural responses and crack development in conventional and plastic fiber-reinforced sleepers under varying bending moments. Complementing these tests, the investigation employs ABAQUS' advanced finite element modeling to enhance the analysis, ensuring precise calibration and validation of the numerical models. This dual approach comprehensively explains the mechanical behavior differences and stresses within the examined structures. The incorporation of plastic fibers not only demonstrates a significant improvement in mechanical strength and crack resistance but paves the way for advancements in railway sleeper technology. By shedding light on the enhanced durability and performance of reinforced concrete structures, this study makes a significant contribution to civil engineering materials science, highlighting the potential for innovative material applications in the construction industry.

11. Elasto-plastic analysis and optimal design of composite integral abutment bridge extended with limited residual plastic deformation.

Abstract

Due to the growing significance of structural theories concerning the composite structure analysed and designed plastically, this paper introduces a new optimisation method for controlling the plastic behaviour of a full-scale composite integral abutment bridge by employing complementary strain energy of residual forces that existed within the reinforcing rebars. Composite bridges are structures made of components such as steel and concrete, which are frequent and cost-effective building methods. Thus, various objective functions were used in this work when applying optimum elasto-plastic analysing and designing the composite integrated bridge structure that was tested experimentally in the laboratory. In contrast, the plastic deformations were constrained by restricting the complementary strain energy of the residual internal forces aiming to find the maximum applied load and the minimum number of steel bars used to reinforce the concrete column part of the structure. The numerical model employed in this paper was validated and calibrated using experimental results, which were considered inside ABAQUS to produce the validated numerical model, using concrete damage plasticity (CDP) constitutive model and concrete data from laboratory testing to solve the nonlinear programming code provided by the authors. This paper presents a novel optimization method using complementary strain energy to control the plastic behaviour of a full-scale composite integral abutment bridge, with the original contribution being the incorporation of residual forces within reinforcing rebars to limit plastic deformations. Following that, a parametric investigation of the various optimisation problems revealed how models performed variously under different complementary strain energy values, which influenced the general behaviour of the structure as it transitioned from elastic to elasto-plastic to plastic; also results showed how the complementary strain energy value is connected with the amount of damaged accrued in both concrete and steel., (© 2023.
