Abstract: Quaoar is a classical Trans-Neptunian Object (TNO) with an area equivalent diameter of 1,100 km and an orbital semi-major axis of 43.3 astronomical units. Based on stellar occultations observed between 2018 and 2021, an inhomogeneous ring (Q1R, Quaoar's first ring) was detected around this body. Aims. A new stellar occultation by Quaoar was observed on August 9th, 2022 aiming to improve Quaoar's shape models and the physical parameters of Q1R while searching for additional material around the body. Methods. The occultation provided nine effective chords across Quaoar, pinning down its size, shape, and astrometric position. Large facilities, such as Gemini North and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), were used to obtain high acquisition rates and signal-to-noise ratios. The light curves were also used to characterize the Q1R ring (radial profiles and orbital elements). Results. Quaoar's elliptical fit to the occultation chords yields the limb with an apparent semi-major axis of $579.5\pm4.0$ km, apparent oblateness of $0.12\pm0.01$, and area-equivalent radius of $543\pm2$ km. Quaoar's limb orientation is consistent with Q1R and Weywot orbiting in Quaoar's equatorial plane. The orbital radius of Q1R is refined to a value of $4,057\pm6$ km. The radial opacity profile of the more opaque ring profile follows a Lorentzian shape that extends over 60 km, with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of $\sim5$ km and a peak normal optical depth of 0.4. Besides the secondary events related to the already reported rings, new secondary events detected during the August 2022 occultation in three different data sets are consistent with another ring around Quaoar with a radius of $2,520\pm20$ km, assuming the ring is circular and co-planar with Q1R. This new ring has a typical width of 10 km and a normal optical depth of $\sim$0.004. Abstract: Within our program of physical characterization of trans-Neptunian objects and centaurs, we predicted a stellar occultation by the centaur (54598) Bienor to occur on January 11, 2019, with good observability potential. We obtained high accuracy astrometric data to refine the prediction, resulting in a shadow path favorable for the Iberian Peninsula. This encouraged us to carry out an occultation observation campaign that resulted in five positive detections from four observing sites. This is the fourth centaur for which a multichord (more than two chords) stellar occultation has been observed so far, the other three being (2060) Chiron, (10199) Chariklo, and (95626) 2002 GZ32. From the analysis of the occultation chords, combined with the rotational light curve obtained shortly after the occultation, we determined that Bienor has an area-equivalent diameter of 150 ± 20 km. This diameter is ∼30 km smaller than the one obtained from thermal measurements. The position angle of the short axis of the best fitting ellipse obtained through the analysis of the stellar occultation does not match that of the spin axis derived from long-term photometric models. We also detected a strong irregularity in one of the minima of the rotational light curve that is present no matter the aspect angle at which the observations were done. We present different scenarios to reconcile the results from the different techniques. We did not detect secondary drops related to potential rings or satellites. Abstract: Aims. We produce a clean and well-characterised catalogue of objects within 100 pc of the Sun from the Gaia Early Data Release 3. We characterise the catalogue through comparisons to the full data release, external catalogues, and simulations. We carry out a first analysis of the science that is possible with this sample to demonstrate its potential and best practices for its use., Methods. Theselection of objects within 100 pc from the full catalogue used selected training sets, machine-learning procedures, astrometric quantities, and solution quality indicators to determine a probability that the astrometric solution is reliable. The training set construction exploited the astrometric data, quality flags, and external photometry. For all candidates we calculated distance posterior probability densities using Bayesian procedures and mock catalogues to define priors. Any object with reliable astrometry and a non-zero probability of being within 100 pc is included in the catalogue., Results. We have produced a catalogue of 331 312 objects that we estimate contains at least 92% of stars of stellar type M9 within 100 pc of the Sun. We estimate that 9% of the stars in this catalogue probably lie outside 100 pc, but when the distance probability function is used, a correct treatment of this contamination is possible. We produced luminosity functions with a high signal-to-noise ratio for the main-sequence stars, giants, and white dwarfs. We examined in detail the Hyades cluster, the white dwarf population, and wide-binary systems and produced candidate lists for all three samples. We detected local manifestations of several streams, superclusters, and halo objects, in which we identified 12 members of Gaia Enceladus. We present the first direct parallaxes of five objects in multiple systems within 10 pc of the Sun., Conclusions. We provide the community with a large, well-characterised catalogue of objects in the solar neighbourhood. This is a primary benchmark for measuring and understanding fundamental parameters and descriptive functions in astronomy.

Stellar occultations have become one of the best techniques to gather information about the physical properties of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs), which are critical objects for understanding the origin and evolution of our Solar System. Aims. The purpose of this work is to determine, with better accuracy, the physical characteristics of the TNO (84922) 2003 VS2 through the analysis of the multichord stellar occultation on 2019 October 22 and photometric data collected afterward. Methods. We predicted, observed, and analyzed the multichord stellar occultation of the Second Gaia Data Release (Gaia DR2) source 3449076721168026624 (mυ = 14.1 mag) by the plutino object 2003 VS2 on 2019 October 22. We performed aperture photometry on the images collected and derived the times when the star disappeared and reappeared from the observing sites that reported a positive detection. We fit the extremities of such positive chords to an ellipse using a Monte Carlo method. We also carried out photometric observations to derive the rotational light curve amplitude and rotational phase of 2003 VS2 during the stellar occultation. Combining the results and assuming a triaxial shape, we derived the 3D shape of 2003 VS2. Results. Out of the 39 observatories involved in the observational campaign, 12 sites, located in Bulgaria (one), Romania (ten), and Serbia (one), reported a positive detection; this makes it one of the best observed stellar occultations by a TNO so far. Considering the rotational phase of 2003 VS2 during the stellar occultation and the rotational light curve amplitude derived (Am = 0.264 ± 0.017 mag), we obtained a mean area-equivalent diameter of DAeq = 545 ± 13 km and a geometric albedo of 0.134 ± 0.010. By combining the rotational light curve information with the stellar occultation results, we derived the best triaxial shape for 2003 VS2, which has semiaxes a = 339 ± 5 km, b = 235 ± 6 km, and c = 226 ± 8 km. The derived aspect angle of 2003 VS2 is θ = 59° ± 2° or its supplementary θ = 121° ± 2°, depending on the north-pole position of the TNO. The spherical-volume equivalent diameter is DVeq = 524 ± 7 km. If we consider large albedo patches on its surface, the semi-major axis of the ellipsoid could be ~ 10 km smaller. These results are compatible with the previous ones determined from the single-chord 2013 and four-chord 2014 stellar occultations and with the effective diameter and albedo derived from Herschel and Spitzer data. They provide evidence that 2003 VS2’s 3D shape is not compatible with a homogeneous triaxial body in hydrostatic equilibrium, but it might be a differentiated body and/or might be sustaining some stress. No secondary features related to rings or material orbiting around 2003 VS2 were detected. © M. Abstract: We revisit the concept of sphere of gravitational activity, to which we give both a geometrical and physical meaning. This study aims to refine this concept in a much broader context that could, for instance, be applied to exo-planetary problems (in a Galactic stellar disc-Star-Planets system) to define a first order "border" of a planetary system. The methods used in this paper rely on classical Celestial Mechanics and develop the equations of motion in the framework of the 3-body problem (e.g. Star-Planet-Satellite System). We start with the basic definition of planet's sphere of activity as the region of space in which it is feasible to assume a planet as the central body and the Sun as the perturbing body when computing perturbations of the satellite's motion. We then investigate the geometrical properties and physical meaning of the ratios of Solar accelerations (central and perturbing) and planetary accelerations (central and perturbing), and the boundaries they define. We clearly distinguish throughout the paper between the sphere of activity, the Chebotarev sphere (a particular case of the sphere of activity), Laplace sphere, and the Hill sphere. The last two are often wrongfully thought to be one and the same. Furthermore, taking a closer look and comparing the ratio of the star's accelerations (central/perturbing) to that of the planetary acceleration (central/perturbing) as a function of the planeto-centric distance, we have identified different dynamical regimes which are presented in the semi-analytical analysis., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: Recording a stellar occultation is one powerful method that gives direct information about the physical properties of the occulting solar system object. In order to obtain reliable and accurate results, simultaneous observations from different locations across-track of the projected path are of great importance. However, organising all the observing stations, aggregating, and analysing the data is time-consuming and not that easy. We have developed a web portal named Occultation Portal (OP) to manage all those occultation observation campaigns from a central server. With this portal, the instrumental and observational information of all observers participating in a stellar occultation campaign and the concerned data are archived systematically in a standard format. The researchers can then visualise the archived data on an event basis. The investigators can also extract the light curve for each data-set with the added reduction pipeline to the portal base. A stellar occultation by Neptune's main satellite, Triton, was observed on 5 October 2017 from Europe, North Africa, and the USA. We derived 90 light curves from this event, 42 of which yielded a central flash detection. Aims. We aimed at constraining Triton's atmospheric structure and the seasonal variations of its atmospheric pressure since the Voyager 2 epoch (1989). We also derived the shape of the lower atmosphere from central flash analysis. Methods. We used Abel inversions and direct ray-tracing code to provide the density, pressure, and temperature profiles in the altitude range similar to 8 km to similar to 190 km, corresponding to pressure levels from 9 mu bar down to a few nanobars. Results. (i) A pressure of 1.18 +/- 0.03 mu bar is found at a reference radius of 1400 km (47 km altitude). (ii) A new analysis of the Voyager 2 radio science occultation shows that this is consistent with an extrapolation of pressure down to the surface pressure obtained in 1989. (iii) A survey of occultations obtained between 1989 and 2017 suggests that an enhancement in surface pressure as reported during the 1990s might be real, but debatable, due to very few high S/N light curves and data accessible for reanalysis. The volatile transport model analysed supports a moderate increase in surface pressure, with a maximum value around 2005-2015 no higher than 23 mu bar. The pressures observed in 1995-1997 and 2017 appear mutually inconsistent with the volatile transport model presented here. (iv) The central flash structure does not show evidence of an atmospheric distortion. Abstract: Since July 2014, the ESA Gaia mission has been surveying the entire sky down to magnitude 20.7 in the visible. In addition to the millions of stars, thousands of Solar System Objects (SSOs) are observed daily. By comparing their positions to those of known objects, a daily processing pipeline filters known objects from potential discoveries. However, owing to Gaia's specific scanning law designed for stars, potential newly discovered moving objects are characterized by very few observations, acquired over a limited time. This aspect was recognized early in the design of the Gaia data processing. A daily processing pipeline dedicated to these candidate discoveries was set up to release calls for observations to a network of ground-based telescopes. Their aim is to acquire follow-up astrometry and to characterize these objects. From the astrometry measured by Gaia, preliminary orbital solutions are determined, allowing to predict the position of these potentially new discovered objects in the sky accounting for the large parallax between Gaia and the Earth (separated by 0.01 au). A specific task within the Gaia Consortium has been responsible for the distribution of requests for follow-up observations of potential Gaia SSO discoveries. Since late 2016, these calls for observations (called alerts) are published daily via a Web interface, freely available to anyone world-wide. Between November 2016 and July 2020, over 1700 alerts have been published, leading to the successful recovery of more than 200 objects. Among those, six have provisional designation assigned with the Gaia observations, the others being previously known objects with poorly characterized orbits, precluding identification at the time of Gaia observations. There is a clear trend for objects with a high inclination to be unidentified, revealing a clear bias in the current census of SSOs against high inclination populations., Submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract: Aims. We aim to demonstrate the scientific potential of the Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) for the study of different aspects of the Milky Way structure and evolution and we provide, at the same time, a description of several practical aspects of the data and examples of their usage., Methods. We used astrometric positions, proper motions, parallaxes, and photometry from EDR3 to select different populations and components and to calculate the distances and velocities in the direction of the anticentre. In this direction, the Gaia astrometric data alone enable the calculation of the vertical and azimuthal velocities; also, the extinction is relatively low compared to other directions in the Galactic plane. We then explore the disturbances of the current disc, the spatial and kinematical distributions of early accreted versus in situ stars, the structures in the outer parts of the disc, and the orbits of open clusters Berkeley 29 and Saurer 1., Results. With the improved astrometry and photometry of EDR3, we find that: (i) the dynamics of the Galactic disc are very complex with oscillations in the median rotation and vertical velocities as a function of radius, vertical asymmetries, and new correlations, including a bimodality with disc stars with large angular momentum moving vertically upwards from below the plane, and disc stars with slightly lower angular momentum moving preferentially downwards; (ii) we resolve the kinematic substructure (diagonal ridges) in the outer parts of the disc for the first time; (iii) the red sequence that has been associated with the proto-Galactic disc that was present at the time of the merger with Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage is currently radially concentrated up to around 14 kpc, while the blue sequence that has been associated with debris of the satellite extends beyond that; (iv) there are density structures in the outer disc, both above and below the plane, most probably related to Monoceros, the Anticentre Stream, and TriAnd, for which the Gaia data allow an exhaustive selection of candidate member stars and dynamical study; and (v) the open clusters Berkeley 29 and Saurer 1, despite being located at large distances from the Galactic centre, are on nearly circular disc-like orbits., Conclusions. Even with our simple preliminary exploration of the Gaia EDR3, we demonstrate how, once again, these data from the European Space Agency are crucial for our understanding of the different pieces of our Galaxy and their connection to its global structure and history.

Abstract: We present the early installment of the third Gaia data release, Gaia EDR3, consisting of astrometry and photometry for 1.8 billion sources brighter than magnitude 21, complemented with the list of radial velocities from Gaia DR2. Gaia EDR3 contains celestial positions and the apparent brightness in G for approximately 1.8 billion sources. For 1.5 billion of those sources, parallaxes, proper motions, and the (G_BP-G_RP) colour are also available. The passbands for G, G_BP, and G_RP are provided as part of the release. For ease of use, the 7 million radial velocities from Gaia DR2 are included in this release, after the removal of a small number of spurious values. New radial velocities will appear as part of Gaia DR3. Finally, Gaia EDR3 represents an updated materialisation of the celestial reference frame (CRF) in the optical, the Gaia-CRF3, which is based solely on extragalactic sources. The creation of the source list for Gaia EDR3 includes enhancements that make it more robust with respect to high proper motion stars, and the disturbing effects of spurious and partially resolved sources. The source list is largely the same as that for Gaia DR2, but it does feature new sources and there are some notable changes. The source list will not change for Gaia DR3. Gaia EDR3 represents a significant advance over Gaia DR2, with parallax precisions increased by 30 percent, proper motion precisions increased by a factor of 2, and the systematic errors in the astrometry suppressed by 30--40 percent for the parallaxes and by a factor ~2.5 for the proper motions. The photometry also features increased precision, but above all much better homogeneity across colour, magnitude, and celestial position. A single passband for G, G_BP, and G_RP is valid over the entire magnitude and colour range, with no systematics above the 1 percent level.

Abstract: International audience; Many advancements in planetary science are achieved by seizing upon the opportunity created by rare natural events (e.g. comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 Jupiter impact; 1994) and by planned physical interactions (e.g. Deep Impact into comet Tempel 1; 2005). A forthcoming opportunity to seize upon a natural physical “experiment” occurs on April 13, 2029 with the unprecedentedly close Earth encounter by the large 340m asteroid (99942) Apophis. On that date, nature is performing the “experiment” of subjecting the physical body of Apophis to Earth’s tidal torques as it approaches to within 31,000 km of Earth’s surface, a distance that is closer than orbiting geosynchronous satellites.A potentially hazardous asteroid (PHA) as large as Apophis encountering Earth this closely (within 0.1 lunar distances) is, on average, a once-per-thousand year event. (In context, Apophis is 7 times larger and 350 times more massive than the Tunguska 1908 impactor; 5000 times more massive than Chelyabinsk 2013.) Because of this event’s incredible rarity, knowledge gained through measurements and outcomes of the Apophis 2029 “natural experiment” are clearly a decadal, if not millennial, opportunity for planetary science. Most specifically, this knowledge opportunity is for the science supporting planetary defense. Further, on April 13, 2029 all of Earth will be watching: Apophis will be visible to the naked eye speeding across the evening sky for an estimated 2 billion people spanning western Europe and northern Africa.In this White Paper we outline our current best understanding, and uncertainties, for scientific advances in the physical study of potentially hazardous asteroids that may be achievable by measuring physical changes of Apophis’ spin, surface structure, and/or shape configuration inresponse to Earth’s tidal torques. If tidal torques themselves, or surface configuration changes induce any measurable seismic vibration signal inside Apophis, a new field of asteroid seismology has the potential to be born. Over six decades of planetary science, seismology has been achieved beyond Earth for only two planetary worlds: Moon and Mars.With this White Paper, we take no position on how to implement specific investigations capable of achieving the science advances offered by the Apophis 2029 opportunity. Instead we advocate that competitive selection of investigations, be they theoretical or observational (ground-based, space-based, or in situ), be executed under the direction of NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office, with a projected and perhaps necessarily augmented budget capable of supporting them. International collaboration is strongly encouraged.Thus, summarizing in four specific points, we urge the framers of the Decadal Survey to:• Recognize the decadal, if not millennial, opportunity for the science of planetary defense presented by the Apophis 2029 once-per-thousand-year “natural experiment.”• Prioritize as a top-level planetary defense science goal modeling and measuring the physical outcome on Apophis exerted by Earth’s tidal torques so as to achieve the greatest possible new insights into the physical nature, including the internal structure, of PHAs.• Recognize that time is of the essence for defining and implementing investigations of physical effects on Apophis, particularly if in situ measurements are to be considered. An Apophis 2029 Science Definition Team may be prescribed.• Recognize that the achievable knowledge of PHAs presented by the Apophis 2029 opportunity could have immeasurable benefits to the future of humanity, in the highly unlikely, but not impossible necessity to mitigate a future impact threat

Abstract: [Context] Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3) contains results for 1.812 billion sources in the magnitude range G = 3-21 based on observations collected by the European Space Agency Gaia satellite during the first 34 months of its operational phase. [Aims] We describe the input data, the models, and the processing used for the astrometric content of Gaia EDR3, as well as the validation of these results performed within the astrometry task. [Methods] The processing broadly followed the same procedures as for Gaia DR2, but with significant improvements to the modelling of observations. For the first time in the Gaia data processing, colour-dependent calibrations of the line- and point-spread functions have been used for sources with well-determined colours from DR2. In the astrometric processing these sources obtained five-parameter solutions, whereas other sources were processed using a special calibration that allowed a pseudocolour to be estimated as the sixth astrometric parameter. Compared with DR2, the astrometric calibration models have been extended, and the spin-related distortion model includes a self-consistent determination of basic-angle variations, improving the global parallax zero point. [Results] Gaia EDR3 gives full astrometric data (positions at epoch J2016.0, parallaxes, and proper motions) for 1.468 billion sources (585 millionwith five-parameter solutions, 882 million with six parameters), and mean positions at J2016.0 for an additional 344 million.Solutions with five parameters are generally more accurate than six-parameter solutions, and are available for 93% of the sources brighter than the 17th magnitude. The median uncertainty in parallax and annual proper motion is 0.02-0.03 mas at magnitude G = 9-14, and around 0.5 mas at G = 20. Abstract: 1 IntroductionCentaurs are objects that orbit the Sun with semi-major axis between those of Jupiter and Neptune, according to the JPL Horizons definition https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb_help.cgi?class=CEN. These objects are thought to come from the trans-Neptunian region being injected into inner parts of the solar system due to planetary encounters, mostly with Neptune [1]. Therefore, centaurs present an excellent opportunity to study smaller trans-Neptunian objects much closer to the Earth, providing a better characterization of their physical properties. During the last years, there has been a growing momentum in the interest about the centaur population due to the discovery of ring systems around two of them, Chariklo [2] and Chiron [3,4], which has opened a new branch of research in order to understand how such rings are formed and how they can survive around these small bodies.(54598) Bienor is one of the largest centaurs known to date, with a diameter of ∼ 200 km estimated from Herschel Space Observatory, Spitzer Space Telescope and ALMA thermal measurements [5,6], similar to that of Chiron and Chariklo. Bienor also has ellipsoidal shape and water ice spectral features analogous to Chariklo and Chiron [7,8,9], although its rotation period of ∼ 9.14 h, without being very slow, is slightly over the average of the TNO/centaur population [10]. From the similarities with Chariklo and Chiron and from other reasons it has been proposed that Bienor could possess a ring system, similar to what has been found in the above mentioned centaurs [9].2 ObservationsWithin our program of physical characterization of TNOs and centaurs, a stellar occultation by the centaur Bienor was predicted to occur on January 11, 2019, with good observability potential. High accuracy astrometry runs were carried out to refine the prediction, and as a result, a shadow path favorable for the south of Europe was derived. This encouraged us to carry out an occultation observation campaign that resulted in 5 positive detections from 4 observing sites located in Spain and Portugal (see Figure 1 and Figure 2). Apart from occultations by the centaurs Chiron [3,4], Chariklo [2,11,12] and 2002 GZ32 [13], no other multichord occultations by centaurs had ever been obtained. 3 ResultsFrom the analysis of the occultation chords we obtain the instantaneous limb fit of Bienor at the moment of the occultation and combining this information with rotational light curves obtained shortly after the occultation, we infer the rotational phase at the time of the occultation and the three dimensional shape of this Centaur under the assumption of a triaxial ellipsoidal shape. The area-equivalent diameter and geometric albedo are also derived and its mass density can be constrained under the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium. Our results are compared with radiometric results obtained using Herschel Space Observatory, Spitzer Space Telescope and ALMA facilities. Abstract: The GBOT group is in charge of the Ground Based Optical Tracking of the Gaia satellite. In concrete terms, since the launch of Gaia, our task is to take every night, using ground based medium-class telescopes, short sequences of $10$ or $20$ images of the Gaia satellite close to its meridian transit. For this purpose, we mainly use the VLT Survey Telescope and the Liverpool Telescope. In these images, taken close to the Sun's opposition - since Gaia is in L$_2$ - we observe many asteroids: between $30$ and $100$ asteroids every night, up to magnitude $22$. In order to extract the astrometric positions as well as the magnitudes of these asteroids, we have developed semi-automatic methods, strategies and tools tailored explicitly for this daily task. In only three and a half years of operation, this system has allowed us to send to the Minor Planet Center the position and the photometry for about $20,000$ asteroids, amongst which $9,000$ new objects. We present results from the first recorded stellar occultation by the large trans-Neptunian object (174567) Varda that was observed on September 10, 2018. Varda belongs to the high-inclination dynamically excited population, and has a satellite, Ilmarë, which is half the size of Varda. Aims. We determine the size and albedo of Varda and constrain its 3D shape and density. Methods. Thirteen different sites in the USA monitored the event, five of which detected an occultation by the main body. A best-fitting ellipse to the occultation chords provides the instantaneous limb of the body, from which the geometric albedo is computed. The size and shape of Varda are evaluated, and its bulk density is constrained using Varda's mass as is known from previous works. Results. The best-fitting elliptical limb has semi-major (equatorial) axis of (383 ± 3) km and an apparent oblateness of 0.066 ± 0.047, corresponding to an apparent area-equivalent radius R′equiv = (370±7) km and geometric albedo pv = 0.099 ± 0.002 assuming a visual absolute magnitude HV = 3.81 ± 0.01. Using three possible rotational periods for the body (4.76, 5.91, and 7.87 h), we derive corresponding MacLaurin solutions. Furthermore, given the low-amplitude (0.06 ± 0.01) mag of the single-peaked rotational light-curve for the aforementioned periods, we consider the double periods. For the 5.91 h period (the most probable) and its double (11.82 h), we find bulk densities and true oblateness of ρ = (1.78 ± 0.06) g cm-3, ϵ = 0.235 ± 0.050, and ρ = (1.23 ± 0.04) g cm-3, ϵ = 0.080 ± 0.049. Abstract: Context. Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3) provides accurate astrometry for about 1.6 million compact (QSO-like) extragalactic sources, 1.2 million of which have the best-quality five-parameter astrometric solutions., Aims. The proper motions of QSO-like sources are used to reveal a systematic pattern due to the acceleration of the solar systembarycentre with respect to the rest frame of the Universe. Apart from being an important scientific result by itself, the acceleration measured in this way is a good quality indicator of the Gaia astrometric solution., Methods. Theeffect of the acceleration was obtained as a part of the general expansion of the vector field of proper motions in vector spherical harmonics (VSH). Various versions of the VSH fit and various subsets of the sources were tried and compared to get the most consistent result and a realistic estimate of its uncertainty. Additional tests with the Gaia astrometric solution were used to get a better idea of the possible systematic errors in the estimate., Results. Our best estimate of the acceleration based on Gaia EDR3 is (2.32 +/- 0.16) x 10(-10) m s(-2) (or 7.33 +/- 0.51 km s(-1) Myr-1) towards alpha = 269.1 degrees +/- 5.4 degrees, delta = -31.6 degrees +/- 4.1 degrees, corresponding to a proper motion amplitude of 5.05 +/- 0.35 mu as yr(-1). This is in good agreement with the acceleration expected from current models of the Galactic gravitational potential. We expect that future Gaia data releases will provide estimates of the acceleration with uncertainties substantially below 0.1 mu as yr(-1).

Abstract: Neptune's incomplete ring arcs have been stable since their discovery in 1984 by stellar occultation. Although these structures should be destroyed within a few months through differential Keplerian motion, imaging data over the past couple of decades has shown that these structures are persistent. We present here the first SPHERE near-infrared observations of Neptune's ring arcs taken at 2.2 $\mu$m (BB-Ks) with the IRDIS camera at the Very Large Telescope in August 2016. The images were aligned using the ephemerides of the satellite Proteus and were suitably co-added to enhance ring and satellite signals. We analyse high-angular resolution near-infrared images of Neptune's ring arcs obtained in 2016 at the ESO VLT-UT3 with the adaptive-optics fed camera SPHERE-IRDIS. We derive here accurate mean motion values for the arcs and the nearby satellite Galatea. The trailing arcs Fraternit\'e and Egalit\'e are stable since they were last observed in 2007. Furthermore, we confirm the fading away of the leading arcs Courage and Libert\'e. Finally, we confirm the mismatch between the arcs' position and 42:43 inclined and eccentric corotation resonances with Galatea; thus demonstrating that no 42:43 corotation model works to explain the azimuthal confinement of the arcs' materiel., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure two of which have 2 subfigures

Abstract: Context. In addition to their great astrophysical interest, quasars represent quasi-ideal reference objects in the celestial sphere with, a priori, a lack of significant proper motion. Since the fourth release of the Large Quasar Astrometric Catalogue (LQAC-4), a large number of quasars have been discovered, in particular those coming from the DR14Q release of the SDSS. With the advent of the Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2), it is now also possible to fold in extremely accurate quasar positions. Aims. Following the same procedure as in the previous releases of the LQAC, our aim is to compile the large majority of the recorded quasars, with their best estimated coordinates and substantial information about their physical properties such as the redshift, multi-bands apparent, and absolute magnitudes. Emphasis is given to the results of the cross-matches with the Gaia DR2 catalogue, which considerably increases the positional accuracy. Methods. New quasars from the SDSS DR14Q release were cross-matched with the precedent LQAC-4 compilation with a 1″ search radius, which leads to 149 084 objects not present in the previous LQAC-4 release. Another cross-match was done with the Gaia DR2 catalogue, which enables us to considerably improve the positioning of these objects. For the first time, parallaxes and proper motions from the DR2, when available, are added to our compilation. Furthermore, a cross-identification of the LQAC-5 with the AllWISE survey gives additional mid-infrared information for an important percentage of objects. Results. Our final catalogue, namely the LQAC-5, contains 592 809 quasars. This represents roughly a 34% increase with respect to the number of objects recorded in the LQAC-4. Among them, 398 697 objects were found in common with the Gaia DR2, within a 1″ search radius. That corresponds to 67.26% of the whole population of the compilation. Conclusion. The LQAC-5 delivers a nearly complete catalogue of spectroscopically confirmed quasars (including a small proportion of 14 126 compact AGN’s) to the astronomical community, with the aim of giving their best equatorial coordinates with respect to the ICRF2 and with exhaustive additional information. For more than 50% of the sample, these coordinates are extracted from the very recent Gaia DR2.

Abstract: International audience; A dense, local network of 30 geodetic markers covering a 50 × 60 km2 area in the southwestern European Alps (Briançon region) has been temporarily surveyed in 1996, 2006 and 2011 by GPS. The aim is to measure the current deformation in this seismically active area. The study zone is characterized by a majority of extensional and dextral focal mechanisms, along north–south to N160 oriented faults. The combined analysis of the three measurement campaigns over 15 years and up to 16 years of permanent GPS data from the French RENAG network now enables to assess horizontal velocities below 1 mm/year within the local network. The long observation interval and the redundancy of the dense campaign network measurement help to constrain a significant local deformation pattern in the Briançon region, yielding an average E–W extension of 16 ± 11 nanostrain/year. We compare the geodetic deformation field to the seismic deformation rate cumulated over 37 years, and obtain good coherencies both in amplitude and direction. Moreover, the horizontal deformation localized in the Briançon region represents a major part of the Adriatic-European relative plate motion. However, the average uplift of the network in an extensional setting needs the presence of buoyancy forces in addition to plate tectonics.

Abstract: Context. Neptune’s incomplete ring arcs have been stable since their discovery in 1984 although these structures should be destroyed in a few months through differential Keplerian motion. Regular imaging data are needed to address the question of the arc stability.Aims. We present the first NACO observations of Neptune’s ring arcs taken at 2.2 μ m (K s band) with the Very Large Telescope in August 2007, and propose a model for the arc stability based on co-orbital motion.Methods. The images were aligned using the ephemerides of the satellites Proteus and Triton and were suitably co-added to enhance ring or satellite signals. Resonance theory and N -body simulations were used to model the arcs’ confinement.Results. We derive accurate mean motion values for the arcs and Galatea and confirm the mismatch between the arcs’ position and the location of the 42:43 corotation inclination resonance. We propose a new confinement mechanism where small co-orbital satellites in equilibrium trap ring arc material. We constrain the masses and locations of these hypothetical co-orbital bodies.

Abstract: V-type asteroids are associated with basaltic composition, and are supposed to be fragments of crust of differentiated objects. Most V-type asteroids in the main belt are found in the inner main belt, and are either current members of the Vesta dynamical family (Vestoids), or past members that drifted away. However, several V-type photometric candidates have been recently identified in the central and outer main belt. The origin of this large population of V-type objects is not well understood. Since it seems unlikely that Vestoids crossing the 3J:-1A mean-motion resonance with Jupiter could account for the whole population of V-type asteroids in the central and outer main belt, origin from local sources, such as the parent bodies of the Eunomia, and of the Merxia and Agnia asteroid families, has been proposed as an alternative mechanism. In this work we investigated the dynamical evolution of the V-type photometric candidates in the central main belt, under the effect of gravitational and non-gravitational forces. Our results show that dynamical evolution from the parent bodies of the Eunomia and Merxia/Agnia families on timescales of 2 Byr or more could be responsible for the current orbital location of most of the low-inclined V-type asteroids., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables. Abstract: Previous works have identified families halos by an analysis in proper elements domains, or by using Sloan Digital Sky Survey-Moving Object Catalog data, fourth release (SDSS-MOC4) multi-band photometry to infer the asteroid taxonomy, or by a combination of the two methods. The limited number of asteroids for which geometric albedo was known until recently discouraged in the past the extensive use of this additional parameter, which is however of great importance in identifying an asteroid taxonomy. The new availability of geometric albedo data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission for about 100,000 asteroids significantly increased the sample of objects for which such information, with some errors, is now known. In this work we proposed a new method to identify families halos in a multi-domain space composed by proper elements, SDSS-MOC4 (a*,i-z) colors, and WISE geometric albedo for the whole main belt (and the Hungaria and Cybele orbital regions). Assuming that most families were created by the breakup of an undifferentiated parent body, they are expected to be homogeneous in colors and albedo. The new method is quite effective in determining objects belonging to a family halo, with low percentages of likely interlopers, and results that are quite consistent in term of taxonomy and geometric albedo of the halo members., Comment: 23 pages, 18 figures, 6 tables. Abstract: The asteroid (10) Hygiea is the fourth largest asteroid of the Main Belt, by volume and mass, and it is the largest member of its own family. Previous works investigated the long-term effects of close encounters with (10) Hygiea of asteroids in the orbital region of the family, and analyzed the taxonomical and dynamical properties of members of this family. In this paper we apply the high-quality SDSS-MOC4 taxonomic scheme of DeMeo and Carry (2013) to members of the Hygiea family core and halo, we obtain an estimate of the minimum time and number of encounter necessary to obtain a $3\sigma$ (or 99.7%) compatible frequency distribution function of changes in proper $a$ caused by close encounters with (10) Hygiea, we study the behavior of asteroids near secular resonance configurations, in the presence and absence of the Yarkovsky force, and obtain a first estimate of the age of the family based on orbital diffusion by the Yarkovsky and YORP effects with two methods. The Hygiea family is at least 2 Byr old, with an estimated age of $T = 3200^{+380}_{-120}$ Myr and a relatively large initial ejection velocity field, according to the approach of Vokrouhlick\'{y} et al. (2006a, b). Surprisingly, we found that the family age can be shortened by $\simeq$ 25% if the dynamical mobility caused by close encounters with (10) Hygiea is also accounted for, which opens interesting new research lines for the dynamical evolution of families associated with massive bodies. In our taxonomical analysis of the Hygiea asteroid family, we also identified a new V-type candidate: the asteroid (177904) (2005 SV5). Abstract: Context. The close approach of the asteroid (99942) Apophis to Earth on April 13, 2029, at a distance of about 38 330 km, is naturally considered a dramatic and fascinating event by the astronomical community, as well as by the public. Aims. Although the orbital changes of the asteroid (due to the gravitational perturbations of our planet during the encounter) have been abundantly investigated, the simultaneous changes in the rotational characteristics of the asteroid have been poorly studied. Methods. In this paper, after numerically computing the perturbing rotational potential of Apophis due to Earth, we used a classical way of calculating variations in the precession psi and the obliquity epsilon, which enables us to determine the changes in position of the instantaneous pole of rotation in space during the encounter. By assigning a reasonable value of the unknown dynamical ellipticity of Apophis, deduced from a statistical study of a full sample of small asteroids, it follows that the changes in the precession Lambda psi and in the obliquity Delta epsilon of the asteroid during the 2029 encounter could be of a few degrees, which makes them an interesting challenge of detection by modern ground-based observations. Results. This study confirms the possible observability of the asteroid rotational change during a close approach. It should be updated and refined in the future, when orbital, physical, and rotational parameters of Apophis become more precise.

Abstract: Astrometry covers a parameter space that cannot be reached by RV or transit methods to detect terrestrial planets on wide orbits. In addition, high accuracy astrometric measurements are necessary to measure the inclination of the planet's orbits. Here we investigate the principles of an artefact of the astrometric approach. Namely, the displacement of the photo-centre due to inhomogeneities in a dust disc around the parent star. Indeed, theory and observations show that circumstellar discs can present strong asymmetries. We model the pseudo-astrometric signal caused by these inhomogeneities, asking whether a dust clump in a disc can mimic the astrometric signal of an Earth-like planet. We show that these inhomogeneities cannot be neglected when using astrometry to find terrestrial planets. We provide the parameter space for which these inhomogeneities can affect the astrometric signals but still not be detected by mid-IR observations. We find that a small cross section of dust corresponding to a cometary mass object is enough to mimic the astrometric signal of an Earth-like planet. Astrometric observations of protoplanetary discs to search for planets can also be affected by the presence of inhomogeneities. Some further tests are given to confirm whether an observation is a real planet astrometric signal or an impostor. Eventually, we also study the case where the cross section of dust is high enough to provide a detectable IR-excess and to have a measurable photometric displacement by actual instruments such as Gaia, IRAC or GRAVITY. Abstract: Magnetar giant flares are rare explosive events releasing up to 10 47 erg in gamma rays in less than 1 second from young neutron stars with magnetic fields up to 10 15-16 G (refs. 1,2 ). Only three such flares have been seen from magnetars in our Galaxy 3,4 and in the Large Magellanic Cloud 5 in roughly 50 years. This small sample can be enlarged by the discovery of extragalactic events, as for a fraction of a second giant flares reach luminosities above 10 46 erg s -1 , which makes them visible up to a few tens of megaparsecs. However, at these distances they are difficult to distinguish from short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs); much more distant and energetic (10 50-53 erg) events, originating in compact binary mergers 6 . A few short GRBs have been proposed 7-11 , with different amounts of confidence, as candidate giant magnetar flares in nearby galaxies. Here we report observations of GRB 231115A, positionally coincident with the starburst galaxy M82 (ref. 12 ). Its spectral properties, along with the length of the burst, the limits on its X-ray and optical counterparts obtained within a few hours, and the lack of a gravitational wave signal, unambiguously qualify this burst as a giant flare from a magnetar in M82., (© 2024. Abstract: Planetary rings are observed not only around giant planets 1 , but also around small bodies such as the Centaur Chariklo 2 and the dwarf planet Haumea 3 . Up to now, all known dense rings were located close enough to their parent bodies, being inside the Roche limit, where tidal forces prevent material with reasonable densities from aggregating into a satellite. Here we report observations of an inhomogeneous ring around the trans-Neptunian body (50000) Quaoar. This trans-Neptunian object has an estimated radius 4 of 555 km and possesses a roughly 80-km satellite 5 (Weywot) that orbits at 24 Quaoar radii 6,7 . The detected ring orbits at 7.4 radii from the central body, which is well outside Quaoar's classical Roche limit, thus indicating that this limit does not always determine where ring material can survive. Our local collisional simulations show that elastic collisions, based on laboratory experiments 8 , can maintain a ring far away from the body. Moreover, Quaoar's ring orbits close to the 1/3 spin-orbit resonance 9 with Quaoar, a property shared by Chariklo's 2,10,11 and Haumea's 3 rings, suggesting that this resonance plays a key role in ring confinement for small bodies., (© 2023.
