Control of coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR)-induced emittance growth is essential in linear accelerators designed to deliver very high brightness electron beams. Extreme current values at the head and tail of the electron bunch, resulting from strong bunch compression, are responsible for large CSR production leading to significant transverse projected emittance growth. The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) truncates the head and tail current spikes which greatly improves free electron laser (FEL) performance. Here we consider the underlying dynamics that lead to formation of current spikes (also referred to as current horns), which has been identified as caustics forming in electron trajectories. We present a method to analytically determine conditions required to avoid the caustic formation and therefore prevent the current spikes from forming. These required conditions can be easily met, without increasing the transverse slice emittance, through inclusion of an octupole magnet in the middle of a bunch compressor.

Current modulations, current spikes, and current horns, are observed in a range of accelerator physics applications including strong bunch compression in Free Electron Lasers and linear colliders, trains of microbunching for terahertz radiation, microbunching instability and many others. This paper considers the fundamental mechanism that drives intense current modulations in dispersive regions, beyond the common explanation of nonlinear and higher-order effects. Under certain conditions, neighboring electron trajectories merge to form caustics, and often result in characteristic current spikes. Caustic lines and surfaces are regions of maximum electron density, and are witnessed in accelerator physics as folds in phase space of accelerated bunches. We identify the caustic phenomenon resulting in cusplike current profiles and derive an expression which describes the conditions needed for particle-bunch caustic formation in dispersive regions. The caustic expression not only reveals the conditions necessary for caustics to form but also where in longitudinal space the caustics will form. Particle-tracking simulations are used to verify these findings. We discuss the broader implications of this work including how to utilize the caustic expression for manipulation of the longitudinal phase space to achieve a desired current profile shape.

A maskless method of electron beam lithography is described which uses the reflection of an electron beam from an electrostatic mirror to produce caustics in the demagnified image projected onto a resist–coated wafer. By varying the electron optics, e.g. via objective lens defocus, both the morphology and dimensions of the caustic features may be controlled, producing a range of bright and tightly focused projected features. The method is illustrated for line and fold caustics and is complementary to other methods of reflective electron beam lithography.

We demonstrate interface-specific propagation-based x-ray phase retrieval tomography of the thorax and brain of small animals. Our method utilizes a single propagation-based x-ray phase-contrast image per projection, under the assumptions of (i) partially coherent paraxial radiation, (ii) a static object whose refractive indices take on one of a series of distinct values at each point in space and (iii) the projection approximation. For the biological samples used here, there was a 9-200 fold improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio of the phase-retrieved tomograms over the conventional attenuation-contrast signal. The ability to 'digitally dissect' a biological specimen, using only a single phase-contrast image per projection, will be useful for low-dose high-spatial-resolution biomedical imaging of form and biological function in both healthy and diseased tissue. We retrieve depth information (moments) of an object using partially coherent fields and defocus induced holographic contrast. Our analysis leads to a form of tomography that does not require sample or source rotation. The tomography method presented here is performed with only two in-line images. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
