Background 4-Dimensional Automated Left Atrial Quantification (4D Auto LAQ) is a technique that uses 3D volume data to determine LA strain. 4-Dimensional Automated Mitral Valve Quantification (4D Auto MVQ) evaluates anatomical and functional mitral valve parameters. Our study evaluated patients with dilated cardiomyopathy and tried to find a correlation between LA strain and mitral apparatus geometry. Methods We enrolled 61 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy and 25 healthy volunteers. The evaluation consisted of clinical examination, laboratory tests, 12 leads electrocardiography. All participants underwent a complete transthoracic echocardiogram to determine cardiac structure and function according to the current guidelines. Measurement of LA strain and MV was performed using 4D Auto-quantification software. The study evaluated longitudinal strain during reservoir phase (LASr) and the parameters of the MV geometry that could interfere with left atrial function: annulus area, annulus perimeter, anteroposterior (A-P) diameter, posteromedial-anterolateral diameter (PM-AL), (the longest diameter of MV perpendicular to AP diameter); commissural diameter (CD), inter-trigonal distance, tenting height, tenting area, and tenting volume. Results 1. The patients were divided in two groups: 26 with ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy and 35 with non-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy. 2. Mean values of MV parameters in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy compare with healthy volunteers were: annulus area: 19.46 cm2 vs 11.85 cm2; annulus perimeter: 16.86 cm vs 12.71cm, A-P diameter 4.53 cm vs 3.45 cm, PM-AL diameter 4.84 cm vs 3.92 cm, CD 4.83 cm, vs 3.94 cm, inter-trigonal distance 3.9 cm vs 2.9 cm, tenting height 1.64 cm vs 1.05 cm, tenting area 4.82 cm2 vs 1.78 cm2, tenting volume 13.49 ml vs 4.27 ml. For LASr, mean values were 10.26 in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy vs 32.14 in healthy volunteers. Mean values of mitral valve parameters and LASr were comparable in ischemic vs non-ischemic cardiomyopathy patients. 3. LASr correlated with anatomical mitral valve parameters: annulus area: r=−0.6, annulus perimeter: r=−0.57, AP diameter: r=−0.58, PM-AL diameter: r=−0.58, commissural diameter: r=−0.66, inter-trigonal distance: r=−0.57, tenting height r=−0.53, tenting area r=−0.55 and tenting volume r=−0.54. Conclusions 1. In patients with dilated cardiomyopathy phenotype, anatomical parameters of the mitral valve and LASr were altered. Results did not reveal significant differences between ischemic and non-ischemic etiology. 2. A correlation was found between the decrease in LASr and anatomical parameters of the mitral valve, suggesting a link between atrial function deterioration and deformity of mitral apparatus geometry in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy. Introduction – Non-invasive parameters used to assess right ventricular (RV) function, i.e. tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE), RV fractional area change (FAC), RV ejection fraction (RVEF), and RV free-wall longitudinal strain (RVFWLS) have shown their prognostic implications. However, since they are extremely load dependent, they do not provide an accurate representation of the RV intrinsic performance. On the other end, invasive indices of RV-arterial coupling (RVAC) derived from pressure-volume loops are not routinely performed, rising the urgency for more feasible, and reliable non-invasive estimates of RVAC. Purpose – To: i. evaluate the prognostic value of echocardiography-derived RVAC surrogates: RVEF/systolic pulmonary artery pressure (sPAP), RVFWLS/sPAP, TAPSE/sPAP, FAC/sPAP, and RV stroke volume/end-systolic volume (SV/ESV), ii. identify the cut-off values associated to all-cause mortality; and iii. compare their prognostic value with that of classical parameters of RV function. Methods – We prospectively enrolled 366 patients with various cardiac diseases, undergoing clinically-indicated comprehensive two- and three-dimensional echocardiography. Results – During a mean follow-up of 7.6 ± 1 years, 80 (21.9%) patients died. At univariable Cox regression, most of the echocardiographic parameters were related to all-cause mortality. Introduction - A by-product of left atrial (LA) strain analysis is the automated measurement of LA maximal volume (LAVmax), which may decrease the time of echocardiography reporting, and increase the reproducibility of the LAVmax measurement. However, the automated measurement of LAVmax by two-dimensional speckle-tracking analysis (2DSTE) has never been validated. Purpose – Accordingly, we sought to: i. assess the feasibility of automated LAVmax measurement by 2DSTE; ii. compare the automated LAVmax by 2DSTE with conventional two-dimensional (2DE) biplane and three-dimensional echocardiography (3DE) measurements; and iii. evaluate the accuracy and reproducibility of the three echocardiography techniques. Methods – LAVmax (34­-197 mL) were prospectively obtained from 198/210 (feasibility 94%) consecutive patients with various cardiac diseases (median age 67 years, 126 men) by 2DSTE, 2DE and 3DE. Results – 2DE and 2DSTE measurements resulted in similar LAVmax values (bias = 1.5 mL, limits of agreement, LOA ± 7.5 mL), and slightly underestimated 3DE LAVmax (biases=-5 mL, LOA ± 17 mL, and -6 mL, LOA ± 16 mL, respectively). Introduction — Atrial functional tricuspid regurgitation (A-FTR) is a recently defined phenotype of FTR associated with persistent/permanent atrial fibrillation. Differently from the classical ventricular form of FTR (V-FTR), patients with A-FTR might present with severely dilated right atrium (RA) and tricuspid annulus (TA), and with preserved right ventricular (RV) size and systolic function. However, the geometry and function of the RV, RA and TA in patients with A-FTR and V-FTR remain to be systematically evaluated. Purpose — Accordingly, we sought to: i. study the geometry and function of the RV, RA and TA in A-FTR by two- and three-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography; and ii. compare them with those found in V-FTR. Methods — We prospectively analysed 113 (44 men, age 68 ± 18 years) FTR patients (A-FTR = 55 and V-FTR = 58) that were compared to two groups of age- and sex-matched controls to develop the respective Z-scores. Results — The severity of FTR, and the degree of TA dilation were similar in A-FTR and V-FTR patients. The Z-scores of RV size were significantly larger, and those of RV function were significantly lower in V-FTR than in A-FTR (p 2), with similar RA maximal volumes (RAVmax) between A-FTR and V-FTR (p = 0.2). Whereas, the RA minimal volumes (RAVmin) were significantly larger in A-FTR than in V-FTR (p = 0.001). Conclusion — Despite similar degrees of FTR, RAVmax and TA size, A-FTR patients show larger RAVmin than V-FTR patients. The AlGaN/GaN heterostructure field-effect transistors (HFETs) were grown on 4H-SiC substrates by metal-organic chemical-vapor deposition (MOCVD) with a range of Al compositions (30–35%) and AlGaN barrier thicknesses. Films with higher strains exhibited a time-dependent degradation of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) that varied from days to weeks. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements of the degraded films revealed a hexagonal cracking pattern with an increase in the medium-scale surface roughness. The localized strain relaxation of AlGaN barriers and increased roughness of the AlGaN/GaN interface and AlGaN surface result in a broad shoulder at the lower angle of the AlGaN peak and a loss of satellite fringes in the (0006) reflection x-ray diffraction (XRD) curve. This degradation raises serious questions with regard to reliability and survivability of AlGaN HFETs and may complicate device fabrication.

Lets list some of the changing factors. First the Internet forever changed our lives. Then came XML as an innocent character-bycharacter UNICODE syntax, and that changed all the rules. Then Web Services arrived, invented by marketing departments in the middle of the boom, and only later taken seriously by vendor capitals and technologists. Now mobile computing and messaging are pervasive. And, finally, we see a shift in perspective due to the dramatic reduction of hardware costs.

Mobile telecommunication and broadcast technology converge. Western European markets for mobile handsets are saturated and mobile handsets are now commodity. Digital TV as well as is just about to become reality in many European countries. Both fields converge. Broadcast offerings will more and more reach out to mobile handsets and vice versa. In this paper we share our view on converged value added services and describe a step by step approach to mobile-broadcast converged value added services. The approach is characterised by keeping the usage barrier for consumers low and getting them gradually shifted onto a future converged platform for interactive value added TV services. A 47-year-old male suffering from chronic purulent ear discharge was investigated bacteriologically in autumn 1977. The isolated strain was identified as Vibrio alginolyticus. The fact that the patient spent his vacation at a Black-Sea resort every year strongly pleads for a direct inoculation of the halophilic Vibrio.

From among the 2813 E. coli strains isolated from various specimens (urine, feces, pharyngeal exudates, organs from fowls) in the course of two years, the authors selected and carried out a complex study on the strains exhibiting atypical features, considered to give rise to errors of diagnosis. Of the 2813 strains studied, 599 (21.29%) presented different atypical traits : 45 (1.59%) morphological and cultural (very small pulvurelent colonies or extremely mucous, oily colonies), 21 (0.74%) morphological, cultural and enzymatic atypical aspects and 533 (18.96%) only enzymatic (non-indolegenous strains, strains giving a methyl red reaction, H2S positive strains, lactose-negative and adonite or inosite-positive strains).

Out of 399 human faeces examined during the first eight months (1975) for the presence of NCV vibrios, one vibrio parahaemolyticus strains has been isolated from a man with acute gastro-enteritis (gastric and abdominal pains, nausea, diarrhoea, headache, general weakness), after having a meal with salted caviar. The strain belongs to Heiberg's group VII and Sakazaki's subgroup I. The virulence tested on chick embryo is 3 times higher (LD50 = 14 germs) if compared with the virulence of V. parahaemolyticus control strain (Sakazaki's strains). A study was carried out on the incidence of E. coli serogroups 01--025, under different clinical and epidemiologic conditions, with a view to evaluating their etiopathogenic significance and the efficiency of immunofluoresence as a rapid laboratory method of diagnosis. A total number of 1542 samples were collected from humans (1075 feces samples and 467 urine samples from cases of urinary infection), and 387 from animals. The samples were collected from cases of enteritis and from healthy children and adults: 285 samples from infantile enteritis cases; 200 samples from adults with enteritis; 31 samples from healthy children: and 559 samples from healthy adults. These E. coli serogroups were found in humans, in both pathologic and normal conditions. The proportion of isolations of E. coli serogroups 01--025 was greater in the feces samples from healthy subjects than in the samples from enternal or urinary infections (48.80% as against 23.21%), demonstrating the opportunist character of these germs. Positive results were obtained in 30.23% of the products of animal origin (monkeys, dogs, chickens), pointing to the wide spread of these serogroups in nature. Serogroups 04 and 025 were predominant in both the human and animal products. The rapid immunofluorescence diagnosis cannot be applied to these serogroups owing to the multiple and varied antigenic fractions. The laboratory diagnosis can only be established in pure cultures by identification of the groups, by biochemical and serolgic methods, by agglutination reactions on slides and in test tubes.

THE first report of the presence of DMPEA in the urine of schizophrenic patients1 was followed by other confirmatory2–4 and conflicting5–9 results. We have used different methods to give a better resolution of the substance. Recently a new technique for the isolation and identification of the pink spot was described10. This seems to be a specific method by which at least seven constituents of the pink spot (DMPEA being only a minor one) have been discovered.
