In the present study, single and mixture effects of cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) on Lemna gibba were analyzed and compared using growth parameters, based on frond number and fresh weight, and biochemical parameters, such as pigment, protein content and activity of antioxidant enzymes. Plants were exposed for 7 days to these metals in nutrient solution. Single and mixture exposures affected plant growth and the biomarkers of the antioxidant response. Considering the growth parameters, Cd was found to be much more toxic than Zn. IC50-7d, based on growth rate calculated on frond number, were 17.8 and 76.73 mg/L, and on fresh weight were 1.08 and 76.93 mg/L, for Cd and Zn respectively. For Cd, LOEC values were obtained at 2.06 and 1.03 mg/L, for frond number and fresh weight respectively; while for Zn, at 20.1 and 74.6 mg/L. A high toxicity effect, considering the same response variables, was observed in plants exposed to the mixtures. Three fixed ratios, based on toxic units (TU) were assayed, ratio 1: 2/3 Cd-1/3 Zn, ratio 2: 1/2 Cd-1/2 Zn and ratio 3: 1/3 Cd-2/3 Zn. Ratio 3 (where Zn was added in higher proportion) was the less toxic. All concentrations of Ratio 1 and 2 significantly inhibited plant growth, showing a 100% inhibition of growth rate at the highest concentrations when based on frond number. Catalase (CAT; EC 1.11.1.6), ascorbate peroxidase (APOX; EC 1.11.1.11) and guaiacol peroxidase (GPOX; EC 1.11.1.7) activities in single metals assays were higher than controls. In mixture tests, the activity of APOX and GPOX was significantly stimulated in plants exposed to all evaluated combinations, while CAT was mainly stimulated in Ratio 3. It was observed that the activity of the enzymes was increased in the mixtures compared with similar concentrations evaluated individually. APOX activity was observed to fit the CA model and following a concentration-response pattern. The response of this antioxidant enzyme could serve as a sensitive stressor biomarker for Cd-Zn interactions. Frond number in Cd-Zn mixtures was not well predicted from dissolved metal concentration in solution using concentration addition (CA) as reference model, as results showed that toxicity was more than additive, with an average of ΣTU = 0.75. This synergistic effect was observed up to 50 mg Zn/L in the mixture, but when it was present in higher concentrations a less than additive effect was observed, indicating a protective effect of Zn. A synergistic and dose-ratio deviations from CA model were also observed.

Groundwater is the largest source of liquid freshwater on Earth. Groundwater ecosystems harbor a rich biodiversity, mainly consisting of microbes and invertebrates that provide substantial ecological services. Despite its importance, groundwater is affected by several anthropic pressures, including pollution from pharmaceutical compounds. Diclofenac is the non-steroidal drug most widely detected in freshwaters, both in surface waters (e.g., rivers, streams, lakes etc.) and groundwaters. Unlike surface waters, the environmental risk of diclofenac in European groundwaters has not yet been assessed by the competent Authorities. The environmental risk assessment refers to the analysis of the potential risk that a chemical compound poses to a given environment by comparing its measured environmental concentrations to its predicted no-effect concentration. In this study, we explored four environmental risk scenarios in European groundwaters using different methodologies. We obtained diverse risk expectations, some indicative of a moderately diffuse environmental risk for concentrations of diclofenac ≥42 ng/L and others indicative of a widespread environmental risk for concentrations ≥5 ng/L. The difference among the four scenarios mainly related to the methods of calculating the predicted no-effect concentration of diclofenac. We discussed the four scenarios in order to identify the most realistic risk expectations posed by diclofenac to European groundwater ecosystems.

Ratio 1 (2/3 TU Cd-1/3 TU Ni) was the most toxic considering both frond number and fresh weight, showing percentage inhibition of growth rates of 96 and 90%, respectively for the highest concentration. A modification of the protein content was observed in single, but especially in the mixture treatments. The activity of catalase (CAT; EC 1.11.1.6), ascorbate peroxidase (APOX; EC 1.11.1.11) and guaiacol peroxidase (GPOX; EC 1.11.1.7) was also affected in single and mixtures assays. APOX and GPOX showed a higher increase of its activities respect the controls after mixture treatments than for single metal treatments. To understand and assess the effects of nanoparticles (NPs) on the environment, should be well established quantitatively the concentration-response relationships. Also relate the potential effects on selected variables of response with the exposure to sub-lethal levels of NPs. In this work, we describe the ecotoxicological evaluation of negative and positive coated silica NPs (Si-Nps) on coelomic cells from Eisenia fetida.

To investigate the presence of possible early atherosclerotic changes in a group of prepubertal children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and to establish the potential beneficial effects of 1-year treatment. Inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate), proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IFN-γ, TNF-α), lipid profile and oxidant–antioxidant status (urinary isoprostanes [PGF-2α]) were assessed in 38 JIA children (12M/26F, mean age 7.05 ± 2.39 years) and compared with 40 controls (18M/22F, mean age 6.34 ± 2.25 years). Carotid intima-media wall thickness (cIMT) was obtained and blood pressure was measured. All parameters were reassessed in JIA children after 1 year of therapy. At baseline JIA children presented compared to controls higher levels of inflammatory markers, proinflammatory cytokines, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and PGF-2α (all p ≤ 0.01). Furthermore, blood pressure and cIMT were significantly increased (both p ≤ 0.01). After a 1-year treatment with non-steroid anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs) and disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), a significant reduction of all parameters was detected (all p ≤ 0.01). This was associated with a significant reduction in blood pressure and cIMT (both p ≤ 0.01). Within the JIA group, patients requiring etanercept presented worse laboratory values and cIMT measurements at baseline. Nevertheless, the same improvement of all parameters was obtained after a 1-year treatment. In stepwise multiple regression, LDL cholesterol and IL-1β were mainly related to cIMT. Chronic and systemic inflammation seems to lead to early atherosclerotic abnormalities even in pre-pubertal JIA children. Substantial improvement can be obtained with 1-year of appropriate therapy.

The genotoxicity of industrial soils was evaluated. A single cell electrophoresis assay or comet assay, using eleocyte cells of Eisenia foetida, was performed to assess the genotoxicity of aqueous elutions. These were obtained from industrial soils containing metals. All soil samples meet the environmental quality guidelines for metal concentrations. However, elutions have produced genotoxic effects at dilutions as low as 6%. Total metal concentrations for each aqueous elution could express synergistic effects of these compounds.

This paper discusses the huge potential of a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) as a tool for real-time monitoring in a perishable goods supply chain according to the pressing need of security and food certification. The combination of an appropriate monitoring system and further data processing create a tool that can provide the most useful information for each application. In this paper we propose a case study. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is an increasing problem in childhood; however type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) remains by far the most common type of diabetes in this age group. In this review we will focus on T1DM, because this will have the greatest implication for patients diagnosed in childhood. During the atherosclerotic process, several molecular, receptorial and cellular factors provide a continous mechanism of vascular damage. In diabetic children this state seems to be enhanced and facilitated so that accelerated atherosclerosis is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events in respect to the non diabetic population. Hyperglycemia PER SE and associated with diabetes is an important risk factor for atherosclerosis. At present a substantial part of children with diabetes do not reach satisfactory glycemic control. Other risk factors for the development and progression of atherosclerosis may be inherited or develop in the course of the disease: hypertension, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, obesity, cigarette smoking, physical inactivity, disturbance of platelet function, coagulation and fibrinolysis. The development and progression of atherosclerosis should be blocked at an early age, if possible. Primary prevention to all risk factors for cardiovascular disease is important and intervention is indicated if necessary. At the moment the best therapeutic strategy is to maintain metabolic control at a physiologic level and perform screening and early intervention for vascular complications.

An ecotoxicologic study was performed to assess the environmental status of the Lujan River. It is an important freshwater system in the northeast of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Surface waters (SWs) and liquids effluents (LEs), before they reached the river, and sediments were assessed via acute toxicity screening using a battery of tests with native species. Additionally, the presence, in each LE and SW sample, of bioaccumulatable compounds was checked by SPME extraction and gas chromatograph-MS determination. An environmental risk assessment of each LE was carried out via toxic units and assessment factors approach and through extrapolation methods. Hazardous concentrations for each LE were compared with their river effluent concentrations. Ninety-one percent (91%) of the total toxic load of the river was due to 4 of 11 LEs (37%) evaluated. Although SW samples were not toxic, a real environmental risk was found for this freshwater environment. Sediment toxicity was found to be related to the proximity to pipe discharges. Bioaccumulatable compounds were found in SWs and in LEs. Esters of phthalic acids, morpholine, hydroquinone, and nonylphenol were found throughout the river at different sample sites and in different months during the 1-year sampling program.

Activated sludge samples from municipal and industry plants were evaluated with the aim to recognise the mainly filamentous bacteria found. The routine tests recommended were performed: Gram, Neisser, PHB-Nilo blue epifluorescence reaction and S. The morphologic characteristics were determined. Correlation between environmental conditions and abundance of dominant bacteria were made. All plants were completely mixed configurations with anoxic reactor for denitrification ahead of main aerobic reactor. Also all systems were working at low F/M values or high sludge age (> ten days) and in some cases with low oxygen concentration. The dominant species were Type 021N, Thiothrix I, Sphaerotilus natans, Microthrix parvicella, Nocardia sp, Type 1701, Type 1863, Type 0041 and Type 0092.

Widespread pollution from agriculture is one of the major causes of poor freshwater quality currently observed across Europeand worldwide. Nutrient loads (nitrogen and phosphorous) from fertilizers and pesticides are known to adversely impact freshwater ecosystems, both surface- and ground water. The Crustacea Copepoda are by far the most abundant and species-rich taxon in ground water and they are consistently represented in ecotonal environments also, as in the hyporheic zone. The direct impact of agricultural pollutants on freshwater biota has been addressed in several studies by means of laboratory bioassays. However, the ecotoxicological research concerning freshwater copepods is scarce for epigean species and almost non-existent for the hypogean ones. Moreover, when available, ecotoxicological studies have been performed considering the effect of toxicants taken individually. Actually, this approach does not reflect the conditions in the field high concentrations of both N-fertilizers and pesticides co-occur. In this study we assessed the acute (at 96h) sensitivity of adults of a hypogean and an epigean species, both belonging to the Crustacea, Copepoda, Cyclopoida, Cyclopidae, to two agricultural toxicants: the ammonium nitrate and the herbicides Imazamox. Both chemicals are widely used for cereal agriculture inEurope. We tested the sensitivity considering the LC50 with mortality endpoints for individual and combined (a mixture solution of ammonium nitrate and Imazamox) toxicant concentrations. The hypogean species was more sensitive than the epigean one to both chemicals and their mixture. Ionized ammonia proved to be more toxic than the herbicide Imazamox for both species. However, the LC50 of both chemicals were lower than the actual standard law limits for good freshwater quality status defined by the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/CE). The effect of the mixture, of the two toxicants was fairly synergic. Concerning ionized ammonia, the LC50-96h in the mixture was higher than the law limits for both species. According to these results, the actual law limits for the good quality of freshwater bodies should be revised accordingly by authorities in charge of water management.

Widespread pollution from agriculture is one of the major causes of the poor freshwater quality currently observed across Europe. Several studies have addressed the direct impact of agricultural pollutants on freshwater biota by means of laboratory bioassays; however, as far as copepod crustaceans are concerned, the ecotoxicological research is scarce for freshwater species and almost nonexistent for the hypogean ones. In this study, we conducted a comparative analysis of the available literature data on the sensitivity of freshwater copepods to agricultural pollutants. We also assessed the acute and chronic sensitivity of a hypogean and an epigean species, both belonging to the Crustacea Copepoda Cyclopoida Cyclopidae, to two N-fertilizers (urea and ammonium nitrate) and two herbicides (ARIANETM II from Dow AgroSciences LLC, and Imazamox), widely used for cereal agriculture in Europe. According to the literature review, freshwater copepods are sensitive to a range of pesticides and N-fertilizers. Ecotoxicological studies on hypogean species of copepods account only one study. There are no standardized protocols available for acute and chronic toxicity tests for freshwater copepods, making comparisons about sensitivity difficult. From our experiments, ionized ammonia proved to be more toxic than the herbicide Imazamox, in both short and chronic bioassays. Urea was the less toxic chemical for both species. The hypogean species was more sensitive than the epigean one to all chemicals. For both species and for all tested chemicals, acute lethality and chronic lethality were induced at concentrations higher than the law limits of good water body quality in Europe, except for ionized ammonia, which provoked the chronic lethality of the hypogean species at a lower concentration. The hazardous concentration (HC) of un-ionized ammonia for 5 % of freshwater copepods, obtained by a species sensitivity distribution, was 92 μg l−1, significantly lower than the HC computed for traditional test species from freshwater environments. A wide variety of atypical presentations with complications affecting multiple organ systems during acute infectious mononucleosis (IM) is described in the literature, with an increase in the number of teenagers who are susceptible to a severe case of the disease. We report a case of a 14-year-old girl with severe IM and acute abdominal pain. Ultrasonographic (US) evaluation showed a marked thickening of the gallbladder wall (GBW) with enlargement of some mesenteric lymph nodes. CT scan showed multiple enlarged lung nodules of various sizes and a small pleural and pericardial effusion; a hypodense solid mass of unknown etiology was detected in the anterior mediastinum, mimicking a malignant tumor. Hematological analysis of peripheral blood smear was performed to exclude neoplastic pathology. IM was identified as the only underlying disease. The patient was carefully monitored: clinical evaluation, laboratory analysis and US examination were repeated at weekly intervals, until recovery.SommarioGli adolescenti possono talvolta presentare forme aggressive di mononucleosi infettiva (MI), che si manifestano con quadri atipici e aspecifici e si accompagnano a complicanze di diversa gravità a carico di vari organi e apparati. Riportiamo il caso di una ragazza di 14 anni, giunta alla nostra osservazione per un quadro di mononucleosi infettiva (MI) e dolore addominale acuto; le indagini diagnostiche evidenziavano all'ecografia addominale la presenza di ispessimento della parete colecistica (3 mm) con versamento pericolecistico e di linfonodi ingranditi all'ilo epatico; alla TC veniva confermato il quadro ecografico addominale e si evidenziava inoltre una massa solida ipodensa a livello del mediastino anteriore, con versamento pleurico e pericardico e presenza di numerosi linfonodi mediastinici ingranditi. Data la gravità del quadro, è stato necessario escludere patologie neoplastiche. La paziente è stata attentamente monitorizzata durante la degenza, ed ha presentato una completa, ma lenta risoluzione dei sintomi.

The aims of this study were: (i) to assess if carbamate pesticides and ammonium, widely detected in European freshwater bodies, can be considered ecologically relevant endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) for benthic and interstitial freshwater copepods; and (ii) to evaluate the potential of copepods as sentinels for monitoring ecosystem health. In order to achieve these objectives, four species belonging to the harpacticoid copepod genus Bryocamptus, namely B. (E.) echinatus, B. (R.) zschokkei, B. (R.) pygmaeus and B. (B.) minutus, were subjected to chronic exposures to Aldicarb and ammonium. A significant deviation from the developmental time of unexposed control cultures was observed for all the species in test cultures. Aldicarb caused an increase in generation time over 80% in both B. minutus and B. zschokkei, but less than 35% in B. pygmaeus and B. echinatus. Ammonium increased generation time over 33% in B. minutus, and 14, 12 and 3.5% for B. pygmaeus, B. zschokkei and B. echinatus, respectively. On the basis of these results it can be concluded that chronic exposure to carbamate pesticides and ammonium alters the post-naupliar development of the test-species and propose their potential role as EDCs, leaving open the basis to search what are the mechanism underlying. A prolonged developmental time would probably produce a detrimental effect on population attributes, such as age structure and population size. These deviations from a pristine population condition may be considered suitable biological indicators of ecosystem stress, particularly useful to compare polluted to unpolluted reference sites. Due to their dominance in both benthic and interstitial habitats, and their sensitivity as test organisms, freshwater benthic and hyporheic copepods can fully be used as sentinel species for assessing health condition of aquatic ecosystems as required by world-wide water legislation. X-ray topography provides a very sensitive map of lattice mismatch between a HgCdTe LPE epitaxial layer and its (111) CdZnTe substrate. A well-defined Crosshatch pattern in the three «110» directions indicates a positive room-temperature lattice mismatch. For conditions of near-perfect lattice matching (±0.003% mismatch), the Crosshatch pattern disappears, presumably because there are few or no misfit dislocations present near the interface, and a region free of topographic contrast is observed. The crosshatch-free region occurs for a small positive room-temperature mismatch (about 0.02%); this is attributed to differences in the lattice matching condition at room temperature and the growth temperature. For negative mismatches, where the film is in tension, a mosaic pattern, rather than a crystallographically oriented Crosshatch, is observed in the topograph. Rocking curve full width at half maximum of the epitaxial layer is minimized in the crosshatch-free zone at a value nearly equal to that of the substrate. Etch pit density of the HgCdTe layer shows a strong minimum for perfect room temperature lattice matching, with values as low as 1 x 104 cm−2. For nearly lattice matched layers, Crosshatch is present throughout the thickness of the epitaxial layer except for a narrow graded-composition region near the substrate interface. Crosshatch contrast appears to result from long-range strain fields associated with a misfit dislocation network near the substrate interface. Spatial variations in topographic features and mismatch across relatively small lateral distances are caused by variations in substrate alloy composition. For truly lattice-matched substrates, better control over the substrate lattice parameter is required.

National surveillance systems of occupational diseases may contribute to evaluate the work-related component of diseases investigated in SENTIERI Project. For a description of SENTIERI, refer to the 2010 Supplement of EpidemiologyPrevention devoted to SENTIERI Project. The National Workers Compensation Authority (INAIL) archives all occupational diseases claims (more than 230 000 in the period 2000-2007) and is in charge of their compensation. The Italian National Mesothelioma Register (ReNaM) and the Sinonasal Cancer Register (ReNaTuNS) record high occupational etiological fraction neoplasms (i.e. mesothelioma and sinonasal cancers). The former has identified more than 10 000 mesothelioma cases until now, and covers almost the whole country; the latter is active only in three Italian regions, Piemonte, Lombardia and Toscana. The monitoring of cancer sites at lower occupational etiological fraction is based on a record-linkage procedure between population-based cancer registries and employment history data, available at the Italian National Institute for Social Security (INPS). Finally, the informative system Mal.Prof collects and classifies all the diseases possibly related to the work environment reported by the Prevention Services of the Local Health Units.

Acute toxicity of paraquat (PQ) and its effects on brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity of a freshwater fish males and females Bryconamericus iheringii was evaluated. The LC50 values at 24, 48, 72 and 96 hs were: 40, 47; 24, 17; 22, 15 and 20, 21 mg of PQ/L respectively. Chronic effect was recorded on AChE activity for all assayed concentrations during 60 days of exposure to PQ with no significant change. A significant increase, time dependent, of AChE activity was observed both in the controls and in the experimental groups. The AChE activity stabilized at 60 days of the test. The increase recorded could be due to the lack of acclimatization of the individuals or to stresses under laboratory conditions. This fact should be considered in AChE activity inhibition studies by plaguicides.

The structural quality of CdTe(111)B substrates and MBE grown CdTe epilayers is examined with synchrotron white beam x-ray topography (SWBXT). Reflection SWBXT indicates that CdTe substrates with comparable x-ray double crystal rocking curve full width at half maximum values can have radically different defect microstructures, i.e. dislocation densities and the presence of inclusions. Dislocation mosaic structures delineated by SWBXT are consistent with the distribution of etch pits revealed by destructive chemical etch pit analysis. Direct one-to-one correspondence between distinct features of the topographic image and individual etch pits is demonstrated. Clearly resolved images of individual dislocations are obtained by carrying out transmission SWBXT. Our investigation demonstrates how, the extent of twinning in a CdTe epilayer is strongly influenced by the quality of the defect microstructure, and how dislocations propagate from an inclusion.

Legislation in Italy concerning health, safety and prevention at the workplace recently established a new data communication standardThe findings are reported of a specific survey on 18 Local Health Units (ASL) over the entire Italian territory, aimed at identifying the critical points in data management and analyze the available information.The occupational health physician for each company must collect and transmit information on the number of workers submitted to health surveillance protocols to the Local Health Unit. Information must be divided by risk factor and gender Local health Units then transmit the data to the Regions and finally to the Italian National Institute for Occupational Safety and Prevention (ISPESL).A sample of 22.977 companies was studied, providing information on about 410,009 workers undergoing health surveillance protocols. Carrying or moving heavy loads, exposure to noise, VDU and chemical substances were the most frequent risk factors. The difference between genders was significant in risk allocation, with exposures to VDU and biological agents prevalently among females.The information thus collected suffered from a lack of data organization and completeness in the sample under study, but nevertheless provides preliminary evidence of a map of occupational risks on a national basis, confirming the potential for the new law (D.Lgs 81/2008) to investigate health safety and prevention at the workplace.

On the basis of the law which introduced the registration of occupational exposures to carcinogens (Legislative Decree 626/94), the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Prevention designed and implemented an information system for collecting and recording such information. The Ministry of Health Decree No 155/2007, which established the procedures for record keeping and transmission of registers of exposed workers, regulated the legislative fJamework in this field.The aim of the study was to illustrate some of the major legislative issues and toprovide summary statistics, after one year of entry into force of this Decree.The main information to record is: the carcinogenic agents used, the type of occupational exposure and data on the environmental measurements. Descriptive statistical analysis were carried out, by sector of economic activity, carcinogen agent and worker's occupation.As at 31 December 2008 the information recorded, altogether, covered: 6000 firms, 79,000 workers, 164,000 exposures and 100,000 measurements. Most of the exposures occurred in the manufacturing and construction industries and in commercial activities.Such surveillance system, established as a result of the institution of exposure registers, makes it possible to plan analytical studies, both for monitoring the effects of exposure, even at low doses, and for assessing the prevention and protection measures. It is hoped that the recent readjustment law (Legislative Decree 81/2008) will promote awareness of all subjects involved in the recording procedures (employers, physicians, local health units, research institutes, etc.), thus increasing the quality and coverage of data transmission.

The sensitivity of harpacticoid copepods was tested against selected pollutants. Acute toxicity tests were carried out for five hyporheic species exposed to pesticides, ammonia, and metals. The stygoxene Bryocamptus zschokkei, B. minutus, B. pygmaeus and Attheyella crassa; and the stygophilous B. echinatus were sampled and cultured during 8 months in controlled conditions. A first test protocol is presented. The acute endpoints among species fell within one order of magnitude. The sensitivity among various species evaluated in this study is consistent and the choice of species for further sediment/groundwater assessment is not specific to a chemical class. These potential test organisms would be more suitable to protect meiofaunal communities.

The electronic structure and surface stability of BaBiO{sub 3} and Ba{sub 0.6}K{sub 0.4}BiO{sub 3} are studied using photoemission. For BaBiO{sub 3} and Ba{sub 0.6}K{sub 0.4}BiO{sub 3}, bonding and nonbonding valence-band features show good agreement with theoretical calculations reported by Takegahara and Kasuya, and Mattheiss and Hamman, and Hamada {ital et} {ital al}. However, the magnitude of Bi 6{ital s} and O 2{ital p} antibonding states near the Fermi level are less than expected, and the Ba 5{ital p} core levels are at a higher energy than reported by Wertheim {ital et al}. The Bi 5{ital d} core levels show a single component for Ba{sub 0.6}K{sub 0.4}BiO{sub 3} but show two components for BaBiO{sub 3}, and the large shift ({similar to}1.6 eV) of the second component to lower binding energy suggests the possible reduction of surface Bi to the metallic state. Examination of extended x-ray-absorption fine-structure data by Heald {ital et al}., obtained from these materials, show that a weaker Bi-O bond exists in BaBiO{sub 3} than in Ba{sub 0.6}K{sub 0.4}BiO{sub 3}, and this may explain why such bonds are easily broken in BaBiO{sub 3}.

Autoimmune or type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), accounts for 90-95% of all cases of diabetes, while type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), characterized by impaired insulin sensitivity and production, accounts for the other 5-10%. Atherosclerotic process starts during childhood and recognize several mechanisms that are activated in response to NOXIUS STIMULI and participate in a complex state which is accepted to be a chronic inflammatory state. T1DM patients, especially those with a non-optimal metabolic control, have a higher risk of developing all macrovascular complications such as myocardial infarction, stroke and silent ischemia. Macrovascular disease is mainly associated with hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, obesity, hypertension, hypercoagulable state, cigarette smoking, lack of exercise, endothelial dysfunction, hyperhomocysteinemia and vascular wall abnormalities. In this paper we review the importance of traditional and non-traditional risk factors for macrovascular complications in children with T1DM and discuss their role in the pathogenesis of the excess cardiovascular mortality in these patients.

Programmed paint stripping and repainting for commercial and military aircraft inspection consumes a large amount time and money and generates considerable amounts of toxic waste. A technique is required that detects surface cracks and corrosion of metallic aerostructures while leaving the paint coating intact. We have investigated the use of infrared spectral reflectance techniques for seeing through paint coatings to the underlying substrate. Many commercial and milspec primers and topcoats exhibit an optically transparent window in the mid-IR range which permits the extraction of spectral reflectance signatures from as well as allowing imaging of the substrate. Both diffuse reflectance and multispectral IR focal plane imaging is used to successfully detect corrosion and surface morphology of painted metal surfaces.

The selection of compounds with a similar toxicological mode of action is a key problem in the study of chemical mixtures. In this paper, an approach for the selection of chemicals with similar mode of action, based on the analysis of structural similarities by means of QSAR and chemometric methods, is described. As a first step, a complete representation of chemical structures for examined chemicals (phenylureas and triazines) by different sets of molecular descriptors allows a preliminary exploration of similarity using multi-dimensional scaling (MDS). The use of genetic algorithm (GA) to select the most relevant molecular descriptors in modeling toxicity data makes it possible to develop predictive toxicity models. The final step is a similarity analysis, based again on MDS, using selected molecular descriptors, really relevant in describing the toxicological effect. © 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd.

A detailed optimization of MBE growth of CdTe on CdTe (111)β using white beam synchrotron x-ray topography, and x-ray rocking curve analysis has been carried out. Defect structures in (111)5 substrates and epilayers are imaged with white beam topography and, for the first time, direct observation of stress induced microtwin growth in CdTe epilayers has been made. X-ray rocking curve analysis of CdTe substrates is shown to be relatively insensitive to defect structures consisting of dislocations and inclusions. On the other hand rocking curve analysis of (111) epilayers reveals a sensitivity to the presence of microtwin. The defect microstructure of a CdTe (111)Bepilayer with the narrowest rocking curve FWHM value published to date (9.4 arc-sec) will be discussed.

The effects of oxygen exposure and substrate temperature on the structure and chemical composition of vacuum‐deposited Al/Cu and Al/O2/Cu bilayers are studied using photoemission and glancing‐angle extended x‐ray absorption fine‐structure (EXAFS) measurements. Use of these complementary techniques permits detailed atomic‐level characterization of thin‐film structure and chemical composition during thin‐film deposition in vacuum or thin‐film modification by heat treatment in air. In absence of oxygen contamination, photoemission indicates significant interfacial reaction at room temperature at the Al/Cu interface. Glancing‐angle EXAFS shows that an Al‐rich Cu–Al alloy forms at the interface at room temperature. Heat treatment promotes alloy formation and CuAl2 forms at temperatures from 120 to 150 °C. For interfaces formed after substrate oxygen exposure significant alloying is still observed and Al reduces the Cu–O substrate leading to the formation of Cu–Al and Al2O3 compounds at room temperature. Annealing the oxygen exposed interface leads to the formation of a CuAl2 phase but at higher temperatures than was observed for samples produced in ultrahigh vacuum.

Synchrotron-radiation photoemission results for the 29-K superconductor Ba/sub 0.6/K/sub 0.4/BiO/sub 3/ are reported for the 14- to 135-eV photon-energy range. Resonant photoemission is used to identify shallow core levels and atomic contributions to the valence band. The results are compared to a recently published band-structure calculation.

Reaction between water at 80 °C and YBa2Cu3O7−x (0.8

The Al/Ta(110) interface is studied as a function of Al coverage and temperature (300T1400 K) using photoemission. Valence-band and core-level data suggest that little or no atomic intermixing occurs at room temperature. An electronic state related to the hybridization of Ta 5d and Al 3sp states at the interface is seen at -1.3 eV binding energy. At about 4.6-monolayer-Al coverage, this interface state shifts \ensuremath{\approxeq}0.7 eV to higher binding energy. A change in the rate of attenuation of the Ta 4f core-level intensity at this Al coverage suggests that the Al overlayer grows in a different mode at higher coverage. Heating to 1010 K results in a reacted overlayer at temperatures consistent with the formation of ${\mathrm{TaAl}}_{3}$, and a careful examination of the photoemission data indicates that an aluminum-rich surface compound is formed. Further interdiffusion to form Ta-rich surface compounds occurs at higher temperatures.

A cooperative study between clinical and cytogenetic steps in 44 patients with Ph'+ CGL is reported in order to verific the usefulness of the cytogenetic screening for the diagnosis and the right classification of the patients. The study of the clinical steps is carried out on the basis of the parameters suggested by Tura and coll.; in the one of the cytogenetic steps Sandberg classification modified by the Authors is adopted. In 40 cases the comparison shows a marrow correspondence between clinical and cytogenetic steps. In fact the overage survival in the classical true steps of the disease is almost the sance in the 1st and 2nd step. In the 3rd step the survival is strongly reduced meaning that the more chromosome alterations are observed the more survival is reduced.

Superconducting Tl‐Ca‐Ba‐Cu‐O thin films with Tc onsets of 115 K and Tc (R=0) of 95 K have been prepared by reactive magnetron sputtering using Tl, Cu and Ca/Ba metal targets. It was found that proper thallium content a is crucial for obtaining a high transition temperature. Wet oxygen and sealed gold tube with additional thallium compounds were used to reduce the loss of thallium during annealing. X‐ray diffraction spectra show that films with the sharpest transition at 95 K are predominantly c‐axis oriented. XANES also shows a preferred c‐axis orientation for the superconducting films while for a nonsuperconducting film the near edge structure suggests greater disorder. X‐ray microprobe fluorescence measurements indicate that these films are close to the 2122 stoichiometry. Scanning electron microscopy on these films is also presented.
