Abstract

Abstract The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the K ± → π 0 π 0 μ ± ν decay based on a sample of 2437 candidates with 15% background contamination collected in 2003–2004. The decay branching ratio in the kinematic region of the squared dilepton mass above 0.03 GeV2/c 4 is measured to be (0.65 ± 0.03) × 10 −6. The extrapolation to the full kinematic space, using a specific model, is found to be (3.45 ± 0.16) × 10 −6, in agreement with chiral perturbation theory predictions.

Abstract

The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the K±→π±π0e+e− decay from an exposure of 1.7×1011 charged kaon decays recorded in 2003–2004. A sample of 4919 candidates with 4.9% background contamination allows the determination of the branching ratio in the full kinematic region, BR(K±→π±π0e+e−)=(4.24±0.14)×10−6. The study of the kinematic space shows evidence for a structure dependent contribution in agreement with predictions based on chiral perturbation theory. Several P- and CP-violating asymmetries are also evaluated.

Abstract

Abstract A measurement of the form factors of charged kaon semileptonic decays is presented, based on 4.4 × 106 K ± → π 0 e ± ν e (K e3 ± ) and 2.3 × 106 K ± → π 0 μ±ν μ (K μ3 ± ) decays collected in 2004 by the NA48/2 experiment. The results are obtained with improved precision as compared to earlier measurements. The combination of measurements in the K e3 ± and K μ3 ± modes is also presented.

Abstract

Abstract The MOSCAB experiment (Materia OSCura A Bolle) uses the “geyser technique”, a variant of the superheated liquid technique of extreme simplicity. Operating principles of the new dark matter detector and technical solutions of the device are reported in detail. First results obtained in a series of test runs taken in laboratory demonstrate that we have successfully built and tested a geyser-concept bubble chamber that can be used in particle physics, especially in dark matter searches, and that we are ready to move underground for extensive data taking.

Abstract

A sample of 1.69×107 fully reconstructed π0→γe+e− decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 experiment at CERN in 2003–2004 is analyzed to search for the dark photon (A′) production in the π0→γA′ decay followed by the prompt A′→e+e− decay. No signal is observed, and an exclusion region in the plane of the dark photon mass mA′ and mixing parameter ε2 is established. The obtained upper limits on ε2 are more stringent than the previous limits in the mass range 9 MeV/c2

Abstract

This paper uses a consumption-based dynamic quantile preference model to estimate the elasticity of intertemporal substitution (EIS) across different levels of risk attitude. In the quantile model, the risk attitude is captured by the quantile and is, therefore, separable from the EIS. This is an advantage with respect to the standard expected utility model, under which risk attitude and EIS are necessarily linked. We derive the quantile Euler equation from the dynamic problem, and use disaggregated consumption data from the Nielsen Consumer Panel together with recently developed instrumental variables quantile regression for nonlinear models to estimate the corresponding EIS across specified quantiles. The empirical results document evidence of heterogeneity in the EIS for different levels of risk attitude, as well as the presence of negative estimates on part of the distribution. The negative estimates help to shed light and reconcile recent results in the literature documenting strong selective reporting, where negative and insignificant EIS estimates are too often discarded.

The NA48/2 experiment collected data in 2003 and 2004 with the main purpose to study direct CP violation in charged kaons decaying in three pions. Thanks to the huge statistics collected, other studies are also possible. In this paper two recent results, in the framework of QCD studies, are reported: the measurement of the K ± → π 0 e ± ν Form Factors and the first observation of the rare decay K ± → π ± π 0 e + e − .

Abstract

The decay rate of $\klpgg$ has been measured with the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. A total of 2558 $\klpgg$ candidates have been observed with a residual background of 3.2%. The branching ratio is determined to be $(1.36 \pm0.03_{(stat)} \pm0.03_{(syst)}\pm 0.03_{(norm)})\times10^{-6}$ and the vector coupling constant $a_v = -0.46 \pm0.03_{(stat)} \pm0.04_{(syst)}$. This result suggests that the CP-violation effects are dominating in the $\klpee$ decay. An upper limit for the $\klpgg$ decay rate in the two photon mass region $m_{\gamma\gamma}

Abstract

A test of lepton flavour conservation in kaon rare decays by the NA48/2 experiment at CERN SPS is presented. The improved upper limit on the rate of the lepton number violating decay K ± → π ∓ μ ± μ ± is established with the data sample collected in 2003–2004. A precision test of lepton flavour universality in kaon rare decays by the successor NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is reported. The helicity suppressed ratio R K = Γ(K ± → e ± ν )/Γ(K ± → μ ± ν ) is measured with a 0.4% precision using the data sample collected in 2007–2008 and is consistent with the prediction of the Standard Model. The main goal of the NA62 experiment is to measure the branching ratio of the ultra-rare K + → π + ν ν decay with 10% accuracy. This will be achieved by collecting ∼ 1013 K + decays in the fiducial volume. The NA62 estimated sensitivities to rare and forbidden decays of K + and π 0 , including lepton flavour and number violating modes, and the NA62 potential to improve on several experimental limits are discussed.

Abstract

Effects of new physics in flavor could be found both in Flavor Changing Neutral Current (FCNC) processes and in Lepton Flavor Violation (LFV) modes. The former offer the possibility to deeply test the standard model in a clean environment, while the latter are sensitive to contribution from several models beyond the standard model. In the Kaon sector both FCNC and LFV will be investigated in the NA62 experiment. In addition the kaons sector is an ideal place where to look for new particles and tiny effects, in the region of hundreds of MeV/ c 2 . In this paper prospects for exotic searches in NA62 will be presented, together with recent results from NA48/2 and NA62-RK on LFV kaon decays modes.

Abstract

A measurement of the branching ratio of the rare leptonic kaon decay $K^\pm \rightarrow \mu^\pm \nu_{\mu} e^+ e^- $ is presented using data collected by the NA48/2 experiment in 2003 and 2004. The measurement is performed in the region $M_{ee} > 140$~MeV/c$^2$. In this particular region low energy QCD contributions become important and can be calculated in the framework of Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT). From a total number of $1.56 \times 10^{11}$ recorded kaon decays, the branching ratio is measured to be $\mathcal{B} \left( K^\pm \rightarrow \mu^\pm \nu_{\mu} e^+ e^- | M_{ee} > 140~ MeV/c^2 \right) = (7.8 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{-8} $.

Abstract

We report the results from a study of ~23 Million K+- ==> pi+- pizero pizero decays recorded by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS, showing an anomaly in the pizero pizero invariant mass distribution in the region around 2m+, where m+ is the charged pion mass. This anomaly, never observed in previous experiments, can be interpreted as an effect due mainly to the final state charge exchange scattering process pi+ pi- ==> pizero pizero in K+- ==> pi+- pi+ pi- decay. It provides a precise determination of a0 - a2, the difference between the pi-pi scattering lengths in the isospin I=0 and I=2 states.

Abstract

We present a new measurement of the branching ratio R of the decay K L → π ± e ∓ ν , denoted as K e 3 , relative to all charged K L decays with two tracks, based on data taken with the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. We measure R = 0.4978 ± 0.0035 . From this we derive the K e 3 branching fraction and the weak coupling parameter | V u s | in the CKM matrix. We obtain | V u s | f + ( 0 ) = 0.2146 ± 0.0016 , where f + ( 0 ) is the vector form factor in the K e 3 decay.

Abstract

Monte Carlo simulation was conducted to analyze the significance of morphology domains on charge transport dynamics in organic bulk heterojunction solar cells. Mesoscale simulation was performed using first reaction method with exponential charge carrier lifetime. Current density vs voltage characteristics were obtained for evenly distributed, graded and ordered morphologies. It was observed that assuming 100% exciton dissociation graded morphology resulted better power conversion efficiency than evenly distributed morphology due to improvement in fill factor (FF).

18. The uplifted terraces of the arkitsa region, NW Evoikos Gulf, Greece: A result of combined tectonic and volcanic processes?

Abstract

The Arkitsa-Kamena Vourla area of central Greece occupies a zone of accommodation between the two tectonic provinces of the North Aegean Trough (the extension of the North Anatolian fault system) and the Gulf of Corinth and is characterized by a series of very prominent tectonic landforms, notably the large (ca. 1000melevation) footwall ridge of the Arkitsa-Kamena Vourla fault system. Despite the highly prominent nature of this footwall ridge and the presence of very fresh tectonic landforms, this fault system is not known to have hosted any major historical earthquakes, and the tectonic and geomorphic evolution of the Arkitsa-Kamena Vourla area remains poorly constrained. This article utilizes a combined geomorphological, sedimentological, and macro-/microfossil approach to evaluate the Late Quaternary evolution of the Arkitsa area, in the eastern part of the fault system, focusing on prominent uplifted terraces present in the hanging wall of the Arkitsa fault. Three distinct raised glaciolacustrine terraces and previously reported uplifted marginal marine deposits suggest sustained uplift of the coastline at a rate of 1-1.5 mm/ yr over the past at least 40,000 yr, possibly dating to 75,000 BP. While movement on an offshore normal fault strand may explain more recent coastal uplift, purely fault-driven, longer-term uplift at this rate requires anomalously high fault-slip and extension rates. Consequently, the development of the terraces and other geomorphic indicators of uplift may be at least partly due to nonfaulting processes, such as Quaternary (intrusive and/or extrusive) volcanic activity associated with evolution of the nearby Lichades volcanic center. © 2014 by The University of Chicago. Abstract

As a first step towards establishing a chiral perturbation theory for overlap fermions, we investigate whether there are any ambiguities in the expression for the pion mass resulting from multiple chiral symmetries. The concern is that, calculating the conserved current for Ginsparg Wilson chiral symmetries in the usual way, different expressions of the chiral symmetries lead to different currents. This implies an ambiguity in the definition of the pion and pion decay constant for all Ginsparg-Wilson expressions of the Dirac operator, including the overlap operator. We use a renormalisation group mapping procedure to consider local chiral symmetry transformations for a continuum Ginsparg-Wilson “Dirac-operator." We find that this naturally leads to an expression for the conserved current that differs from the standard expression by cut-off artefacts, but is independent of which of the Ginsparg-Wilson symmetries is chosen. We recover the standard expressions for the massive Dirac operator, propagator, and chiral condensate. With this in place, we proceed to calculate the pion mass in the mapped theory as a function of the quark mass, and discover a unique expression for Fπ and mπ , recovering the usual Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation, baring the substitution of the chiral condensate with its modified value. We hypothesise that the argument can be carried directly over to the lattice theory.

Abstract

The NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN study rare kaon decays using the decay in flight technique. In this paper two selected topics will be presented: new measurements performed by the two experiments of the K±→ π±γγ decay which represents a stringent test of the Chiral Perturbation Theory and the measurement of the Branching Ratio of the very rare decay K+→π+νν¯${K^ + } \to {\pi ^ + }\nu \bar \nu $ at 10% level, that will provide a test of the Standard Model and possible extensions beyond it.

Abstract

The KS → γγ decay rate has been measured with the NA48 detector using a high intensity short neutral beam from the CERN SPS. The measured branching ratio BR(KS → γγ) = (2.78 ± 0.06stat ± 0.04syst) x 10-6, obtained from 7461 ± 172 KS → γγ events, is significantly higher than the O(p4) prediction of chiral perturbation theory. Using a KL beam the ratio Γ(KL → γγ)/Γ(KL → π0π0π0) = (2.81 ± 0.02syst) ×10-3 has been measured. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The direct CP violation parameter Re(epsilon'/epsilon) has been measured from the decay rates of neutral kaons into two pions using the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. The 2001 running period was devoted to collecting additional data under varied conditions compared to earlier years (1997-99). The new data yield the result: Re(epsilon'/epsilon) = (13.7 +/- 3.1) times 10^{-4}. Combining this result with that published from the 1997, 98 and 99 data, an overall value of Re(epsilon'/epsilon) = (14.7 +/- 2.2) times 10^{-4} is obtained from the NA48 experiment., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Physics Letters B

Abstract

New measurements of the $\eta$ and $K^0$ masses have been performed using decays to 3$\pi^0$ with the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. Using symmetric decays to reduce systematic effects, the results $M(\eta) = 547.843\pm0.051$ MeV/c$^2$ and $M(K^0) = 497.625\pm0.031$ MeV/c$^2$ were obtained., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures to be published in Physics Letters B

Abstract

The fully contained events detected in the NUSEX nucleon stability experiment have been analysed to search for possible anomalies in the fluxes of atmospheric neutrinos. The measured flux of muon neutrinos is in very good agreement with predictions and no anomaly has been found in the ratio between the rate of electron and muon neutrino events.

Abstract

A research form for recording clinical data relating to the arthritic knee is described. Data are recorded using a numerical code which facilitates transfer to a computer and provides an easily read record. Any form must be a compromise but the one described has been proven clinically by providing the data for a multi-center evaluation of hundreds of knees observed over a period of 5 years. A shorter form is described for routine follow-up purposes.

Abstract

This paper presents an initial assessment of the methodology currently being used in the Evaluation of the NHS Experimental Computer Programme. A broad background to the NHS Computer Programme and its Evaluation is followed by a brief a priori assessment of the Performance Criteria approach to evaluation. Detailed results relating to the pre-computer X-ray system at The London Hospital (Whitechapel) sire discussed. It is concluded that the criteria can adequately quantify the performance of a system, though the cost of the information is high. A path to a cheaper and even more effective methodology suggested but requires the completion of the current work. The ultimate achievement will be a powerful measurement tool, for use in both manual and computer systems.

Abstract

We discuss an action in which the fermion matrix has single level stout smearing for the hopping terms together with unsmeared links for the clover term. With the (tree level) Symanzik improved gluon action this constitutes the Stout Link Non-perturbative Clover or SLiNC action. To cancel O(a) terms the clover coefficient, csw, has to be tuned. We present here preliminary results of a non-perturbative determination of csw using the Schrodinger functional and as a by-product also a determination of the critical hopping parameter. A determination of the renormalisation constant for the local vector current is also given. Abstract

Optogenetics has transformed studies of neural circuit function, but remains challenging to apply to non-human primates (NHPs). A major challenge is delivering intense, spatiotemporally-precise, patterned photostimulation across large volumes in deep tissue. Such stimulation is critical, for example, to modulate selectively deep-layer corticocortical feedback circuits. To address this need, we have developed the Utah Optrode Array (UOA), a 10×10 glass needle waveguide array fabricated atop a novel opaque optical interposer, and bonded to an electrically addressable µLED array. In vivo experiments with the UOA demonstrated large-scale, spatiotemporally precise, activation of deep circuits in NHP cortex. Specifically, the UOA permitted both focal (confined to single layers/columns), and widespread (multiple layers/columns) optogenetic activation of deep layer neurons, as assessed with multi-channel laminar electrode arrays, simply by varying the number of activated µLEDs and/or the irradiance. Abstract

Optogenetics has transformed studies of neural circuit function, but remains challenging to apply in non-human primates (NHPs). A major challenge is delivering intense and spatially precise patterned photostimulation across large volumes in deep tissue. Here, we have developed and validated the Utah Optrode Array (UOA) to meet this critical need. The UOA is a 10×10 glass waveguide array bonded to an electrically-addressable μLED array. In vivo electrophysiology and immediate early gene (c-fos) immunohistochemistry demonstrated the UOA allows for large-scale spatiotemporally precise neuromodulation of deep tissue in macaque primary visual cortex. Specifically, the UOA permits both focal (single layers or columns), and large-scale (across multiple layers or columns) photostimulation of deep cortical layers, simply by varying the number of simultaneously activated μLEDs and/or the light irradiance. Abstract

Innovation and creativity are part of everyday life for the bedside nurse. Nursing clinicians continuously innovate and create to meet each patient's unique needs. However, policies, regulations, and drama can inhibit that creativity when clinicians move into management. Three nurse leaders discuss their journeys to bring innovation into their leadership practices through participation in a yearlong program, the "Executive Fellowship in Innovation Health Leadership."The authors share insights gained after they participated in a cohort of health care leaders who took part in this yearlong fellowship. Details of the fellowship program are discussed, along with the benefits of entering such a program. Three separate innovation projects are reviewed. In Iowa, an Assistant Vice President of Nursing led the restructure and development of a support role to remove unnecessary tasks from nurse managers. In California, a Director of Education, Practice, and Informatics took a personal journey to enhance her senior leadership skills. In Florida, a Chief Nursing Officer created a program designed to teach nurse leaders to be innovative in health care. Each author addresses the innovation model/methodologies that they applied in the execution of their individual projects.
