In climate change impact research, the assessment of future river runoff as well as the catchment-scale water balance is impeded by different sources of modeling uncertainty. Some research has already been done in order to quantify the uncertainty of climate projections originating from the climate models and the downscaling techniques, as well as from the internal variability evaluated from climate model member ensembles. Yet, the use of hydrological models adds another layer of uncertainty. Within the QBic3 project (Québec–Bavarian International Collaboration on Climate Change), the relative contributions to the overall uncertainty from the whole model chain (from global climate models to water management models) are investigated using an ensemble of multiple climate and hydrological models. Although there are many options to downscale global climate projections to the regional scale, recent impact studies tend to use regional climate models (RCMs). One reason for that is that the physical coherence between atmospheric and land-surface variables is preserved. The coherence between temperature and precipitation is of particular interest in hydrology. However, the regional climate model outputs often are biased compared to the observed climatology of a given region. Therefore, biases in those outputs are often corrected to facilitate the reproduction of historic runoff conditions when used in hydrological models, even if those corrections alter the relationship between temperature and precipitation. So, as bias correction may affect the consistency between RCM output variables, the use of correction techniques and even the use of (biased) climate model data itself is sometimes disputed among scientists. For these reasons, the effect of bias correction on simulated runoff regimes and the relative change in selected runoff indicators is explored. If it affects the conclusion of climate change analysis in hydrology, we should consider it as a source of uncertainty. If not, the application of bias correction methods is either unnecessary to obtain the change signal in hydro-climatic projections, or safe to use for the production of present and future river runoff scenarios as it does not alter the change signal. The results of the present paper highlight the analysis of daily runoff simulated with four different hydrological models in two natural-flow catchments, driven by different regional climate models for a reference and a future period. As expected, bias correction of climate model outputs is important for the reproduction of the runoff regime of the past, regardless of the hydrological model used. Then again, its impact on the relative change of flow indicators between reference and future periods is weak for most indicators, with the exception of the timing of the spring flood peak. Still, our results indicate that the impact of bias correction on runoff indicators increases with bias in the climate simulations.

Over the recent years, several research efforts investigated the impact of climate change on water resources for different regions of the world. The projection of future river flows is affected by different sources of uncertainty in the hydro-climatic modelling chain. One of the aims of the QBic3 project (Québec-Bavarian International Collaboration on Climate Change) is to assess the contribution to uncertainty of hydrological models by using an ensemble of hydrological models presenting a diversity of structural complexity (i.e., lumped, semi distributed and distributed models). The study investigates two humid, mid-latitude catchments with natural flow conditions; one located in Southern Québec (Canada) and one in Southern Bavaria (Germany). Daily flow is simulated with four different hydrological models, forced by outputs from regional climate models driven by global climate models over a reference (1971–2000) and a future (2041–2070) period. The results show that, for our hydrological model ensemble, the choice of model strongly affects the climate change response of selected hydrological indicators, especially those related to low flows. Indicators related to high flows seem less sensitive on the choice of the hydrological model.

Little quantitative knowledge is as yet available about the role of hydrological model complexity for climate change impact assessment. This study investigates and compares the varieties of different model response of three hydrological models (PROMET, Hydrotel, HSAMI), each representing a different model complexity in terms of process description, parameter space and spatial and temporal scale. The study is performed in the Ammer watershed, a 709 km2 catchment in the Bavarian alpine forelands, Germany. All models are driven and validated by a 30-year time-series (1971–2000) of observation data. It is expressed by objective functions, that all models, HSAMI and Hydrotel due to calibration, perform almost equally well for runoff simulation over the validation period. Some systematic deviances in the hydrographs and the spatial patterns of hydrologic variables are however quite distinct and thus further discussed. Virtual future climate (2071–2100) is generated by the Canadian Regional Climate Model (vers 3.7.1), driven by the Coupled Global Climate Model (vers. 2) based on an A2 emission scenario (IPCC 2007). The hydrological model performance is evaluated by flow indicators, such as flood frequency, annual 7-day and 30-day low flow and maximum seasonal flows. The modified climatic boundary conditions cause dramatic deviances in hydrologic model response. HSAMI shows tremendous overestimation of evapotranspiration, while Hydrotel and PROMET behave in comparable range. Still, their significant differences, like spatially explicit patterns of summerly water shortage or spring flood intensity, highlight the necessity to extend and quantify the uncertainty discussion in climate change impact analysis towards the remarkable effect of hydrological model complexity. It is obvious that for specific application purposes, water resources managers need to be made aware of this effect and have to take its implications into account for decision making. The paper concludes with an outlook and a proposal for future research necessities.

Depuis une dizaine d’années, des efforts considérables ont été accomplis dans le domaine de nouveaux matériaux synthétisés à bas coût pour être intégrer dans les cellules solaires à base de couches absorbantes CIS: CuIn (S,Se)2, et GICS: Cu(In, Ga)(Se,S)2. On peut citer à titre d’exemple les couches tampons telles que: CdS, ZnS, CuxS et Ag2S. Ces matériaux ont attiré notre attention vu leurs facilité à être déposé par la technique SILAR, ‘Successive Ionic Layer Absorption Reaction’ sur du verre, une technique réalisée et automatisé pour la première fois à l’université des Sciences et de la technologie d’Oran. Les matériaux sont synthétisés au laboratoire de microscopie électronique et sciences des matériaux et caractérisés à l’Université de Bourgogne par la coopération de l’équipe. Les couches minces et nanostructures sont le sulfure de cuivre CuxS, le sulfure d’argent Ag2S, le sulfure de zinc ZnS, le disulfure de cuivre et d’aluminium CuAlS2 et le disulfure de cuivre et d’indium CuInS2 ont un gap optique fondamental de l’ordre de 1,5 - 2,5 eV pour CuxS, de 1,0 - 2,0 eV pour Ag2S, de 2,5 eV pour ZnS, de 3,5 eV pour CuAlS2 et de 1,5 eV pour CIS. Ces matériaux sont préparés par plusieurs techniques, telles que spray, Sol gel, SILAR et bain chimique. A notre connaissance, il y a deux chercheurs indiens qui oeuvrent dans ce domaine, Lokhande et Pathan [1, 4, 5] qui ont développé cette technique au sens propre du brevet de déposition. Ces matériaux peuvent être utilisés en optoélectronique comme couche tampon et couche absorbante pour cellule solaire, photoconducteur et photodiode, dans les applications de l’environnement comme capteur de gaz.

Context: Environmental changes will foster the spread of Ixodes scapularis ticks and increase the incidence of Lyme disease in Québec in the coming years. The objective of this study is to estimate the epidemiological and clinical burden and part of the current economic burden of Lyme disease in Québec and to estimate the number of cases expected by 2050., Methods: Cases of Lyme disease reported in Québec from 2015 to 2019 were used to describe their demographic, geographical and clinical characteristics and the cost of their initial care. Three incidence rate scenarios were then developed to estimate the number of cases expected by 2050, based on demographic and climate projections., Results: From 2016 to 2019, 1,473 cases of Lyme disease were reported in Québec. Over 90% of those cases were acquired in two regions of southern Québec (Estrie and Montérégie), while the individuals infected were residents from all over Québec. The average age of cases is 44 years and 66% of infections were at the localized stage, the first stage of Lyme disease. The cost of initial care is estimated at an average of $182 CAN per patient ($47 CAN at the localized stage and $443 CAN at the disseminated stage). According to projections, over 95% of the Québec population will live in a climate zone conducive to the establishment of ticks by 2050, with a number of cases acquired in Québec being 1.3 to 14.5 times higher than in 2019, depending on the incidence rate scenario used., Conclusion: The epidemiological burden is concentrated primarily in southern Québec, but the clinical and economic burden is already distributed throughout the province. Colloidal bismuth therapeutics have been used for hundreds of years, yet remain mysterious. Here we report an X-ray pair distribution function (PDF) study of the solvolysis of bismuth disalicylate, a model for the metallodrug bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol). This reveals catalysis by traces of water, followed by multistep cluster growth. The ratio of the two major species, {Bi 9 O 7 } and {Bi 38 O 44 }, depends on exposure to air, time, and the solvent. The solution-phase cluster structures are of significantly higher symmetry in comparison to solid-state analogues, with reduced off-center Bi 3+ displacements. This explains why such "magic-size" clusters can be both stable enough to crystallize and sufficiently labile for further growth.

Cumulative CO 2 emissions are a robust predictor of mean temperature increase. However, many societal impacts are driven by exposure to extreme weather conditions. Here, we show that cumulative emissions can be robustly linked to regional changes of a heat exposure indicator, as well as the resulting socioeconomic impacts associated with labour productivity loss in vulnerable economic sectors. We estimate historical and future increases in heat exposure using simulations from eight Earth System Models. Both the global intensity and spatial pattern of heat exposure evolve linearly with cumulative emissions across scenarios (1% CO 2 , RCP4.5 and RCP8.5). The pattern of heat exposure at a given level of global temperature increase is strongly affected by non-CO 2 forcing. Global non-CO 2 greenhouse gas emissions amplify heat exposure, while high local emissions of aerosols could moderate exposure. Considering CO 2 forcing only, we commit ourselves to an additional annual loss of labour productivity of about 2% of total GDP per unit of trillion tonne of carbon emitted. This loss doubles when adding non-CO 2 forcing of the RCP8.5 scenario. This represents an additional economic loss of about 4,400 G$ every year (i.e. 0.59 $/tCO 2 ), varying across countries with generally higher impact in lower-income countries.

Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) originate from the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria and trigger an inflammatory response via the innate immune system. LPS consist of a lipid A moiety directly responsible for the stimulation of the proinflammatory cascade and a polysaccharide chain of variable length. LPS form aggregates of variable size and structure in aqueous media, and the aggregation/disaggregation propensity of LPS is known as a key determinant of their biological activity. The aim of the present study was to determine to which extent the length of the polysaccharide chain can affect the nature of LPS structures, their pharmacokinetics, and eventually their proinflammatory properties in vivo . LPS variants of Salmonella Minnesota with identical lipid A but with different polysaccharide moieties were used. The physical properties of LPS aggregates were analyzed by zetametry, dynamic light scattering, and microscopy. The stability of LPS aggregates was tested in the presence of plasma, whole blood, and cultured cell lines. LPS pharmacokinetics was performed in wild-type mice. The accumulation in plasma of rough LPS (R-LPS) with a short polysaccharidic chain was lower, and its hepatic uptake was faster as compared to smooth LPS (S-LPS) with a long polysaccharidic chain. The inflammatory response was weaker with R-LPS than with S-LPS. As compared to S-LPS, R-LPS formed larger aggregates, with a higher hydrophobicity index, a more negative zeta potential, and a higher critical aggregation concentration. The lower stability of R-LPS aggregates could be illustrated in vitro by a higher extent of association of LPS to plasma lipoproteins, faster binding to blood cells, and increased uptake by macrophages and hepatocytes, compared to S-LPS. Our data indicate that a long polysaccharide chain is associated with the formation of more stable aggregates with extended residence time in plasma and higher inflammatory potential. These results show that polysaccharide chain length, and overall aggregability of LPS might be helpful to predict the proinflammatory effect that can be expected in experimental settings using LPS preparations. In addition, better knowledge and control of LPS aggregation and disaggregation might lead to new strategies to enhance LPS detoxification in septic patients.

Climate change has been linked with the establishment and geographical expansion of zoonotic diseases, an example of which is the well-documented increase in human cases of Lyme disease in Quebec, Canada. As temperatures continue to increase in Quebec, it is anticipated that several zoonotic diseases will be affected. In response to the growing zoonotic issues facing public health authorities, Quebec's Multi-Party Observatory on Zoonoses and Adaptation to Climate Change ( Observatoire multipartite québécois sur les zoonoses et l'adaptation aux changements climatiques) (the Observatory) was founded in 2015 as part of the Quebec government's Climate Change Action Plan ( Plan d'action 2013-2020 sur les changements climatiques ). The Observatory was designed to bring together agencies involved in formulating public policy and experts from the disciplines of human health, animal health and environmental sciences, in a manner similar to the innovative "One World, One Health" approach. The Observatory provides a platform for knowledge sharing and consensus building among representatives of public policy decision makers and scientists. Its main objectives are to anticipate and prioritize potential issues associated with zoonotic diseases in Quebec, in order to support applicable risk management and climate change adaptation. This article describes what the Observatory is, what it does and outlines its plans for the future.

We developed a new scheme for obtaining coherent random lasing based on a chip consisting of a polymer film doped with Rhodamine 6G, having as scatterers butterfly-like TiO(2) nanomembranes (TiO(2)-NM) supported on a glass substrate. The feedback mechanism for laser action is due to the multiple scattering of light by TiO(2)-NM rather than provided by localized variations of the refractive index in the polymer film. The above-threshold multiple spikes signature indicative of random laser emission with coherent feedback is confirmed. As nanomembranes are foreseen as new MEMS/NEMS building blocks, a new generation of combined active/passive photonic devices can be envisaged.

Titanium(IV) oxide thin films have been prepared by dip-coating at ambient temperature from a TiO2 colloidal suspension. Prior to deposition, this suspension was synthesized by microwave-induced thermal hydrolysis of a titanium tetrachloride aqueous solution in the presence of hydrochloric acid. The effects, on film roughness and film thickness, of substrate, number of layers, substrate withdrawal speed, and heat treatment temperature were investigated on different observation scales. The microwave-born oxide nanoparticles showed good affinity to glass and silicon substrates; 10- to 50-nm-thick thin films, with absorption edge blue-shifted compared to bulk anatase, were obtained through a simple process without the need of heating treatment for crystallization purposes.

Tin(IV) oxide thin films have been prepared by dip-coating. The suspensions used for these depositions have been synthesized by microwave-induced thermohydrolysis of tin tetrachloride aqueous solutions in the presence of hydrochloric acid. Single or multiple depositions were tested, on glass substrates as well as on pure SiO2. The obtained thin films were characterized by optical microscopy, interferometric roughness measurements (Micromap), scanning electron microscopy, secondary ion mass spectroscopy, and scanning tunneling microscopy.

This paper presents a systematic in situ study of the process of formation of silico-calco-alkaline gels starting from a liquid colloidal solution containing different alkaline ions and different calcium concentration until the final gel state. The combined use of X-ray and neutron small-angle scattering (SAS) and dynamical rheometry techniques lead to a consistent description of the structure of the aggregates and of the mechanisms of aggregation involved in gel formation. SAS results indicate that the aggregates are fractal objects, their structure strongly depending on calcium ion concentration. The differences in gelation kinetics for systems containing different alkaline ions were attributed to the effects of repulsive forces acting on the external surfaces of the fractal aggregates. The high ionic strength of the studied sols induces a non-classical dependence of these forces on the counter ion size.

The growth of the hydrocarbon-rich alga Botryococcus braunii was studied under "air-lift" conditions using batch and continuous cultures. Large variations in the physiological state of B. braunii were achieved in batch cultures and in continuous cultures with various dilution rates. The possible effects of these variations upon hydrocarbons (nature, relative abundance, location, level, productivity) and also on the production of exocellular polysaccharides were examined. The relationships between the physiological state of B. braunii and its hydrocarbon and polysaccharide production were discussed and compared with those generally observed in unicellular algae. The factors giving rise to the transition from high to low productivity stages were considered. To this end we examined, at first, the variations in cell ultrastructure and the resulting degeneration occurring during batch cultures. Afterward the parallel changes in some parameters of the medium (pH, phosphate level) were determined and their possible relationships with B. braunii growth and hydrocarbon production were discussed. The main features of phosphate nutrition in B. braunii and its effects on hydrocarbons were finally examined.
