1. Developing Second Language Narrative Literacy Using Concept-Based Instruction and a Division-of-Labor Pedagogy

Abstract

A well-documented curricular gap exists in L2 pedagogy between the introductory courses, focusing mainly on language, and advanced courses, focusing mainly on literary content. Intermediate learners, despite their proficiency, generally have difficulty in bridging this gap, as it requires a shift from decoding to interpreting and analyzing texts. In order to contribute to closing the gap, this research aimed to promote the development of intermediate learners' L2 narrative literacy abilities while studying their development in the formation process. A concept-based instructional (CBI) approach was developed and implemented through a Division-of-Labor Pedagogy (DOLP) during a twelve-week pedagogical intervention. This study investigated the extent to which CBI/DOLP promoted the development of learners' L2 narrative literacy abilities as well as their understanding, use, appropriation, and internalization of three concepts necessary for reading and interpreting texts of any kind: Foundation, Organization, and Genre. The concepts were segmented into their component parts and assigned to intermediate learners of L2 French as "roles" which they prepared and shared with the other learners organized in a collective format. This allowed each learner to participate fully in the reading activity even though at the outset each learner was responsible for only a portion of the knowledge needed to read, analyze, and interpret the texts utilized in the study. Mediation was provided as needed for both individuals and the collective. The learners read a series of narrative texts that had been previously evaluated for their relative complexity by independent raters. The raters also scored pre-test and post-test summaries produced by each learner. The summaries were rated for main idea, supporting details, synthesis, generalizations, and accuracy. Statistical analysis showed that learners' scoresscore;on both mid- and high-level text summaries improved significantly from pre- to post-test. Additional data included audio/video recordings of the learners' performance during the ten weeks of instructional activities, a series of verbalizations of their understanding of the relevant concepts, and survey data. Along with improved performance on the pre- and post-tests, the learners exhibited marked changes in their respective verbalizations on the concepts and the manner in which they used the concepts to guide their thinking/performance. Abstract

A search for the decays of the Higgs and Z bosons to a ϕ meson and a photon is performed with a pp collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.7 fb^{-1} collected at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. No significant excess of events is observed above the background, and 95% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions of the Higgs and Z boson decays to ϕγ of 1.4×10^{-3} and 8.3×10^{-6}, respectively, are obtained.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to evaluate the usefulness of a macroscopic, fluorescent, imaging technique to quantify spatiotemporal mass transport parameters in in vitro solid tumor tissues taken from rat models. Fluorescent images captured during the experiments are digitally analyzed to determine the concentration of a fluorescent marker dye as it diffuses into tissue specimens taken from rat tumors. The collected concentration data are used to estimate local diffusion coefficients. An analysis of the distribution of the local diffusion data indicates that the local diffusion coefficient is spatially dependent within the tumor tissue. When mass transfer is restricted to one dimension, the current technique can be used to determine the concentration distribution of fluorescent molecules on the tissue surface and to estimate the mass transfer parameters within the heterogeneous tumor tissue.

Abstract

The effects of variations in the venous valve anatomy are studied experimentally using an artificial system that mimics the bicuspid valves normally found in veins in the lower extremities. The artificial valves are constructed from thin-walled, latex tubing and polyurethane film. The experimental variables in the study are the gap width between the leaflet attachments at the vein wall and the ratio of the sinus depth to vein diameter. The results show that the antegrade mass flow rate is not affected to the same degree when compared to retrograde flow by the various valve configurations examined in this study. The results also indicate that increases in the gap width, which serve to increase the degree of imperfect wall attachment, have less effect on retrograde mass flow rate in valves with deeper sinuses.

Abstract

Eight polymer and 9 microcapsule formulations of deet were tested on laboratory rabbits against Aedes aegypti and Anopheles albimanus. Several formulations were significantly more effective than simple (unformulated) deet at the same strength for periods up to 24 h. Best results were obtained with a polymer formulation containing a high molecular weight fatty acid and 3 microcapsule formulations containing lanolin, gum arabic, gelatin, tannic acid, stearic acid, polypropylene glycol, water, and a commercial lotion in the microcapsule and carrier fractions.

Abstract

The laboratory rabbit was evaluated as a model for screening topical mosquito repellents, using data obtained in tests of deet (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide) against Aedes aegypti on humans and rabbits. Host-specific differences in the action of the test material were quantified by multiple regression analysis. The test material was less effective but more persistent in tests on rabbits, and responses of the mosquito test population were more variable.

Eight commercial repellents were tested against Aedes aegypti 0 and 4 h after application in serial dilution to volunteers and laboratory mice. Results were analyzed by multiple regression of percentage of biting (probit scale) on dose (logarithmic scale) and time. Empirical correction terms for conversion of values obtained in tests on mice to values expected in tests on human volunteers were calculated from data obtained on 4 repellents and evaluated with data obtained on 4 others. Corrected values from tests on mice did not differ significantly from values obtained in tests on volunteers. Abstract

Studies by prior workers have shown that insect repellents can act as attractants when present as low concentrations, deposits or residues. In the present study deet and ethyl hexanediol were tested in 2-fold serial doses from 1.9 X 10(-9) to 1.6 X 10(-2) mg/cm2 on the forearms of volunteers against colonized Anopheles albimanus, Aedes aegypti and Ae. taeniorhynchus. Both compounds were significantly repellent at the high end of the dose range, as expected. Neither was significantly attractant to An. albimanus in low doses. However, deet was significantly attractant to Ae. aegypti in the dose range 7.6 X 10(-9) to 1.2 X 10(-4) mg/cm2 and to Ae. taeniorhynchus in the dose ranges 1.9 X 10(-9) to 3.1 X 10(-8) mg/cm2 and 2.0 X 10(-6) to 2.5 X 10(-4) mg/cm2. Ethyl hexanediol was significantly attractant to Ae. taeniorhynchus in the dose range 1.9 X 10(-9) to 6.2 X 10(-5) mg/cm2. Based on these results and prior work of V.G. Dethier and C.N.E. Ruscoe, a model sequence of the effects of chemicals on insects with increasing dose was developed. It was concluded that the labels of commercial repellents should be amended to include instructions to wash off or reapply the repellent when it is no longer effective.

Abstract

Five standard topical repellents and a synthetic pyrethroid were evaluated against the tsetse Glossina morsitans using a dose-response testing procedure on white rabbits. The repellents, in decreasing order of effectiveness based on 0-h ED50 tests, were dimethyl phthalate, 2-ethyl-1,3-hexanediol, permethrin, N,N -diethyl- m -toluamide (DEET), Indalone, and Citronyl. At the ED95 level, dimethyl phthalate, 2-ethyl-1, 3-hexanediol, and Indalone were significantly ( P < 0.05) more potent than Citronyl. None of the materials tested were significantly more effective than DEET. Permethrin exhibited insecticidal as well as repellent activity at the concentrations tested.

Abstract

Two models of the effectiveness and persistence of mosquito repellents on the skin were developed from published functions and data. The probit plane model, Y = a + b1X1 + b2X2, relates the response (Y, in probits) of the mosquito test population to the log dose (X1) of repellent applied and the test period, or elapsed time from the time of application (X2). The exponential decay model, Z = X1 + (b2/b1)X2, estimates the repellent residue (log-1 Z) from X1 and X2. The models were validated with original data from tests of deet (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide) and ethyl hexanediol (2-ethyl-1,3-hexanediol) on the forearm against the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. The probit plane model was evaluated as Y = 8.83 + 1.56 X1-0.69X2 for deet and Y = 8.67 + 1.68X1 - 0.92X2 for ethyl hexanediol when X1 is in log mg/cm2 and X2 is in hours. The exponential decay model was evaluated as Z = X1 - 0.45X2 for deet and Z = X1 - 0.55X2 for ethyl hexanediol. The decay constant (lambda) and half-life (t1/2) were estimated as 1.03 hr-1 and 0.67 hr for deet and 1.26 hr-1 and 0.55 hr for ethyl hexanediol from the slope parameter (b2/b1) of the decay model. Applicable correlation coefficients, standard errors and confidence limits are given. The introduction of these models of the pharmacodynamics of mosquito repellents is a step toward establishing a rational basis for the research, development, testing and evaluation of repellents and for their regulation by the government.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract

Purpose: The purposes of this study were to describe the characteristics of patients who experienced hospital-acquired pressure ulcers (HAPUs); explore risk factors with these patients, including comorbid conditions; and describe risk-reduction measures in patients who developed HAPUs., Subjects and Setting: Eighty-two patients with at least 1 HAPU were identified at an urban Midwestern trauma center over 1 year., Design: A prospective study was conducted that included chart review and patient assessment., Methods: Assessment criteria for the data collection form were obtained from the literature. The novel instrument was designed to capture intrinsic conditions, for example, medical diagnoses; extrinsic conditions, such as microclimate factors; and organ failure. Characteristics of all patients with at least 1 HAPU were collected by a certified wound care nurse. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics., Results: Most patients who developed HAPUs were ill enough to require extended hospital stays and discharged to extended care facilities. All patients with HAPUs had multiple risk factors, categorized as intrinsic, extrinsic, or organ failures, yet nearly one-quarter were identified by current standards as "low-risk." Many of the measured variables are well-established risk factors, but several were comorbid diagnoses that are not assessed on the Braden Scale for Pressure Sore Risk. Eighty percent of subjects had 6 or more risk factors associated with an increased risk for PU development (mean = 9.2). Two-thirds of the sample group experienced failure of at least 1 organ system. Data on the use of 5 preventive interventions was tallied. A vast majority of patients (84.1%) were using 4 or 5 (mean = 4.3, SD = 1.0) of the interventions prior to the occurrence of the HAPU., Conclusion: Current risk assessment methods do not assess organ failures and the effect of multiple comorbid associated with HAPU occurrence. Current risk prevention methods may not be sufficient to prevent HAPUs in all patients.
