Abstract: Several neutrino detectors, KamLAND, Daya Bay, Double Chooz, RENO, and the forthcoming large-scale JUNO, rely on liquid scintillator to detect reactor antineutrino interactions. In this context, inverse beta decay represents the golden channel for antineutrino detection, providing a pair of correlated events, thus a strong experimental signature to distinguish the signal from a variety of backgrounds. However, given the low cross-section of antineutrino interactions, the development of a powerful event selection algorithm becomes imperative to achieve effective discrimination between signal and backgrounds. In this study, we introduce a machine learning (ML) model to achieve this goal: a fully connected neural network as a powerful signal-background discriminator for a large liquid scintillator detector. We demonstrate, using the JUNO detector as an example, that, despite the already high efficiency of a cut-based approach, the presented ML model can further improve the overall event selection efficiency. Moreover, it allows for the retention of signal events at the detector edges that would otherwise be rejected because of the overwhelming amount of background events in that region. We also present the first interpretable analysis of the ML approach for event selection in reactor neutrino experiments. This method provides insights into the decision-making process of the model and offers valuable information for improving and updating traditional event selection approaches.

Abstract: Abstract The search for neutrino events in correlation with gravitational wave (GW) events for three observing runs (O1, O2 and O3) from 09/2015 to 03/2020 has been performed using the Borexino data-set of the same period. We have searched for signals of neutrino-electron scattering and inverse beta-decay (IBD) within a time window of $$\pm \, 1000$$ ± 1000 s centered at the detection moment of a particular GW event. The search was done with three visible energy thresholds of 0.25, 0.8 and 3.0 MeV. Two types of incoming neutrino spectra were considered: the mono-energetic line and the supernova-like spectrum. GW candidates originated by merging binaries of black holes (BHBH), neutron stars (NSNS) and neutron star and black hole (NSBH) were analyzed separately. Additionally, the subset of most intensive BHBH mergers at closer distances and with larger radiative mass than the rest was considered. In total, follow-ups of 74 out of 93 gravitational waves reported in the GWTC-3 catalog were analyzed and no statistically significant excess over the background was observed. As a result, the strongest upper limits on GW-associated neutrino and antineutrino fluences for all flavors ( $$\nu _e, \nu _\mu , \nu _\tau $$ ν e , ν μ , ν τ ) at the level $$10^9{-}10^{15}~\textrm{cm}^{-2}\,\textrm{GW}^{-1}$$ 10 9 - 10 15 cm - 2 GW - 1 have been obtained in the 0.5–5 MeV neutrino energy range.

Abstract: Abstract The search for neutrino events in correlation with 42 most intense fast radio bursts (FRBs) has been performed using the Borexino dataset from 05/2007 to 06/2021. We have searched for signals with visible energies above 250 keV within a time window of $$\pm \, 1000$$ ± 1000 s corresponding to detection time of a particular FRB. We also applied an alternative approach based on searching for specific shapes of neutrino-electron scattering spectra in the full exposure data of the Borexino detector. In particular, two incoming neutrino spectra were considered: the monoenergetic line and the spectrum expected from supernovae. The same spectra were considered for electron antineutrinos detected through inverse beta-decay reaction. No statistically significant excess over the background was observed. As a result, the strongest upper limits on FRB-associated neutrino fluences of all flavors have been obtained in the 0.5–50 MeV neutrino energy range.

Abstract: Abstract Cosmogenic radio-nuclei are an important source of background for low-energy neutrino experiments. In Borexino, cosmogenic $$^{11}$$ 11 C decays outnumber solar pep and CNO neutrino events by about ten to one. In order to extract the flux of these two neutrino species, a highly efficient identification of this background is mandatory. We present here the details of the most consolidated strategy, used throughout Borexino solar neutrino measurements. It hinges upon finding the space-time correlations between $$^{11}$$ 11 C decays, the preceding parent muons and the accompanying neutrons. This article describes the working principles and evaluates the performance of this Three-Fold Coincidence (TFC) technique in its two current implementations: a hard-cut and a likelihood-based approach. Both show stable performances throughout Borexino Phases II (2012–2016) and III (2016–2020) data sets, with a $$^{11}$$ 11 C tagging efficiency of $$\sim 90$$ ∼ 90 % and $$\sim $$ ∼ 63–66 % of the exposure surviving the tagging. We present also a novel technique that targets specifically $$^{11}$$ 11 C produced in high-multiplicity during major spallation events. Such $$^{11}$$ 11 C appear as a burst of events, whose space-time correlation can be exploited. Burst identification can be combined with the TFC to obtain about the same tagging efficiency of $$\sim 90\%$$ ∼ 90 % but with a higher fraction of the exposure surviving, in the range of $$\sim $$ ∼ 66–68 %.

Abstract: Abstract The Borexino detector measures solar neutrino fluxes via neutrino-electron elastic scattering. Observed spectra are determined by the solar-ν e survival probability P ee (E), and the chiral couplings of the neutrino and electron. Some theories of physics beyond the Standard Model postulate the existence of Non-Standard Interactions (NSI’s) which modify the chiral couplings and P ee (E). In this paper, we search for such NSI’s, in particular, flavor-diagonal neutral current interactions that modify the ν e e and ν τ e couplings using Borexino Phase II data. Standard Solar Model predictions of the solar neutrino fluxes for both high- and low-metallicity assumptions are considered. No indication of new physics is found at the level of sensitivity of the detector and constraints on the parameters of the NSI’s are placed. In addition, with the same dataset the value of sin2 θ W is obtained with a precision comparable to that achieved in reactor antineutrino experiments .

Abstract: We present the most recent solar neutrino results from the Borexino experiment at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. In particular, refined measurements of all neutrinos produced in the {\it pp} fusion chain have been made. It is the first time that the same detector measures the entire range of solar neutrinos at once. These new data weakly favor a high-metallicity Sun. Prospects for measuring CNO solar neutrinos are also discussed.

Abstract: This article describes a design of an field-programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation of a clock and data recovery (CDR) system. The core will be integrated in the FPGA configuration for the front-end electronics (FEE) board of the Jiangmen underground neutrino observatory (JUNO) experiment. The front-end will be placed on the main detector, underground and underwater, making the electronics not accessible after installation. The timing and trigger system relies on a synchronous link connection over CAT5e cable (up to 100 m long) between the front-end and the back-end electronics (BEE), where a twisted-pair is dedicated to clock-forwarding. The robustness of the recovery clock system is essential for the stability of the FPGA firmware. The proposed project is intended to improve the clock recovery operation by increasing the immunity of the link to sudden electromagnetic interference (EMI). On top of this, the core allows to free a twisted-pair in the link, since the clock can be recovered from the data and there is no more need for a clock-dedicated transmission. This will optimize the link granting the possibility to implement other features. The design is based on two components: a numerically-controlled oscillator (NCO), in order to create a controlled frequency clock signal, and a digital phase detector (PD) to match the clock frequency with the data rate. NCOs are often coupled with a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) to create direct digital synthesizers (DDSs), which are able to produce analog waveforms of any desired frequency. In the presented case instead, the NCO generates a digital clock signal of an arbitrary frequency, while the PD manages this frequency by intercepting any shifting on the relative phase between the clock and the data. A phase aligner (PA) module guarantees that data are sampled in the middle of the eye pattern, which represents the optimal sampling point. The article presents an overview of the NCO-based CDR design and implementation, together with some tests and results in order to verify the CDR reliability. Moreover, in the last section, some other possible applications of the core are illustrated.

Abstract: Thanks to the progress of neutrino physics, today we are able of exploiting neutrinos as a tool to study astrophysical objects. The latter in turn serve as unique sources of elusive neutrinos, which fundamental properties are still to be understood. This contribution attempts to summarize the latest results obtained by measuring neutrinos emitted from the Sun and geoneutrinos produced in radioactive decays inside the Earth, with a particular focus on a recent discovery of the CNO-cycle solar neutrinos by Borexino. Comprehensive measurement of the pp-chain solar neutrinos and the first directional detection of sub-MeV solar neutrinos by Borexino, the updated 8B solar neutrino results of Super-Kamiokande, as well as the latest Borexino and KamLAND geoneutrino measurements are also discussed.

Abstract: Borexino is a 280t liquid scintillator detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), Italy. Its main goal is the precision spectroscopy of solar neutrinos down to energies of 0.19 MeV and for this task it features an unprecedented radio-purity and a high scintillation light yield. The solar neutrinos are measured by the elastic scattering off electrons which induce isotropically emitted scintillation photons as well as a sub-dominant number of Cherenkov photons that are detected by photomulitplier tubes. Here we present the first detection of sub-MeV solar neutrinos using their associated Cherenkov photons in a high light yield liquid scintillator detector. In Borexino electrons with E>0.16MeV produce Cherenkov photons, where the ratio of Cherenkov photons from the neutrino scattered electrons is estimated to be < 1% for all PMT hits, so a typical event by event direction reconstruction is not possible. Instead this analysis looks at the integrated signal of the PMT hits of all detected events by correlating the position of each hit PMT relative to the reconstructed position of the event and the well known position of the Sun. In this way it is possible to measure an angular distribution that shows the statistical contribution of Cherenkov photons from the solar neutrino recoil electrons. Using the Geant4-based Borexino Monte Carlo to produce the expected angular distribution for solar neutrinos and background we have measured 8643 − 2058 +2252 neutrino events out of 19904 total events for an energy region around the 7Be edge between 0.53 MeV and 0.74 MeV.

Abstract: The Borexino detector, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, is a radiopure 280 ton liquid scintillator detector with a primary goal to measure low-energy solar neutrinos created in the core of the Sun. These neutrinos are a consequence of nuclear fusion reactions in the solar core where Hydrogen is burned into Helium and provide a direct probe of the energy production processes, namely the proton-proton (pp) chain and the Carbon-Nitrogen-Oxygen (CNO) cycle. The fusion of Hydrogen in the case of the CNO cycle, which is expected to contribute in the order of less than 1% to the total solar energy, is catalyzed by Carbon, Nitrogen, and Oxygen directly depending on the abundances of these elements in the solar core. The measurement of CNO neutrinos is challenging due to the high spectral correlation with the decay electrons of the background isotope 210Bi and the pep solar neutrino signal. The experimental achievement of thermal stabilization of the Borexino detector after mid 2016, has opened the possibility to develop a method to constrain the 210Bi rate through its decay daughter and α emitter 210Po which can be identified in Borexino with an efficiency close to 100 percent on an event-by-event basis. Moreover, the flux of pep neutrinos can be constrained precisely through a global analysis of solar neutrino data which is independent of the dataset used for the CNO analysis. This conference contribution is dedicated to the first experimental evidence of neutrinos produced in the CNO fusion cycle in the Sun which is at the same time the dominant energy production mechanism in heavier stars compared to the Sun.

Abstract: We report on an improved measurement of the $^8$B solar neutrino interaction rate with the Borexino experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. Neutrinos are detected via their elastic scattering on electrons in a large volume of liquid scintillator. The measured rate of scattered electrons above 3 MeV of energy is $0.223\substack{+0.015 \\ -0.016}\,(stat)\,\substack{+0.006 \\ -0.006}\,(syst)$ cpd/100 t, which corresponds to an observed solar neutrino flux assuming no neutrino flavor conversion of $\Phi\substack{\rm ES \\ ^8\rm B}=2.57\substack{+0.17 \\ -0.18}(stat)\substack{+0.07\\ -0.07}(syst)\times$10$^6$ cm$^{-2}\,$s$^{-1}$. This measurement exploits the active volume of the detector in almost its entirety for the first time, and takes advantage of a reduced radioactive background following the 2011 scintillator purification campaign and of novel analysis tools providing a more precise modeling of the background. Additionally, we set a new limit on the interaction rate of solar $hep$ neutrinos, searched via their elastic scattering on electrons as well as their neutral current-mediated inelastic scattering on carbon, $^{12}$C($\nu,\nu'$)$^{12}$C* ($E_{\gamma}$= 15.1 MeV).

Abstract: The Borexino detector at Gran Sasso has now accumulated over ten years of continuous data which represent a magnificent opportunity to study the cosmic muon flux at a deep underground location. We present here a precision measurement of the flux and of the expected seasonal modulation. We present the correlation with the atmospheric temperature variations from global atmospheric models. We measure the correlation parameters and infer the kaon-to-pion ratio in the production of cosmic muons from high energy primaries. We also find evidence of a long term modulation that is not present in the atmospheric data and we investigate a possible positive correlation with the solar activity. Finally we observe a seasonal modulation of the production rate of cosmogenic neutrons that is in phase with the muon modulation but shows a surprisingly larger amplitude.

Abstract: The Borexino liquid scintillator neutrino observatory has a unique capability to perform high-precision solar neutrino observations thanks to its exceptional radiopurity and good energy resolution (5% at 1 MeV). A comprehensive study of the pp-chain neutrinos was presented that includes the direct measurements of 7Be, pp and pep neutrino fluxes with the highest precision ever achieved (down to 2.8% in the 7Be component), the 8B with the lowest energy threshold, the best limit on CNO neutrinos and the first Borexino limit on hep neutrinos. These results are important to validate the MSW-LMA oscillation paradigm across the full solar energy range and to exclude possible Non-Standard neutrino Interactions (NSIs). In particular the effects of neutrino-flavor-diagonal Neutral-Current (NC) interactions that modify the vee and vτe couplings while preserving their chiral and flavor structures, have been investigated. At detection, the shape of the electron-recoil spectrum is affected by changes in the vee and vτe couplings, quantified by the parameters ε e L / R and ε τ L / R . New bounds to all four parameters were obtained, quite stringent compared to the global ones. In particular, the best constraint to-date on ε e L was achieved. A comprehensive summary of all the recent results on solar neutrinos from Borexino is reported in the present paper.

Abstract: Borexino is a 280-ton liquid scintillator detector located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), Italy and is one of the two detectors that has measured geoneutrinos so far. The unprecedented radio-purity of the scintillator, the shielding with highly purified water, and the placement of the detector at a 3800 m w.e. depth have resulted in very low background levels and has made Borexino an excellent apparatus for geoneutrino measurements. The new update of the Borexino geoneutrino measurement, using the data obtained from December 2007 to April 2019, has been presented. Enhanced analysis techniques, adopted in this measurement, have been also presented (poster presentation #39 by S. Kumaran). The updated statistics and the new elaborate analysis have led to more than a factor two increase in exposure ((1.12 ± 0.05) × 1032 protons × yr) when compared to the latest Borexino result from 2015. The resulting geoneutrino signal of 47.0 − 7.7 + 8.4 ( stat ) − 1.9 + 2.4 ( sys ) TNU has − 17.2 + 18.3 % total precision. The geological interpretations of this measurement have been discussed. In particular, the 99% C.L. observation of the mantle signal by exploiting the relatively well-known lithospheric contribution, the estimation of the radiogenic heat, as well as the comparison of these results to the predictions based on different geological models. The upper limits on the power of a hypothetical georeactor that might be present at different locations inside the Earth have been set.

Enhanced analysis techniques, such as an increased fiducial volume, improved veto for cosmogenic backgrounds, extended energy and coincidence time windows, as well as a more efficient α/β particle discrimination have been adopted in this measurement. The updated statistics and these elaborate resulted in a geoneutrino signal of 47.0 − 7.7 + 8.4 ( stat ) − 1.9 + 2.4 ( sys ) TNU with − 17.2 + 18.3 % total precision.

Abstract: We report on searches for neutrinos and antineutrinos from astrophysical sources performed with the Borexino detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. Electron antineutrinos ($\bar{\nu}_e$) are detected in an organic liquid scintillator through the inverse $\beta$-decay reaction. In the present work we set model-independent upper limits in the energy range 1.8-16.8 MeV on neutrino fluxes from unknown sources that improve our previous results, on average, by a factor 2.5. Using the same data set, we first obtain experimental constraints on the diffuse supernova $\bar{\nu}_e$ fluxes in the previously unexplored region below 8 MeV. A search for $\bar{\nu}_e$ in the solar neutrino flux is also presented: the presence of $\bar{\nu}_e$ would be a manifestation of a non-zero anomalous magnetic moment of the neutrino, making possible its conversion to antineutrinos in the strong magnetic field of the Sun. We obtain a limit for a solar $\bar{\nu}_e$ flux of 384 cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ (90% C.L.), assuming an undistorted solar $^{8}$B neutrinos energy spectrum, that corresponds to a transition probability $p_{ \nu_e \rightarrow \bar\nu_{e}}$ 1.8 MeV. At lower energies, by investigating the spectral shape of elastic scattering events, we obtain a new limit on solar $^{7}$Be-$\nu_e$ conversion into $\bar{\nu}_e$ of $p_{ \nu_e \rightarrow \bar \nu_{e}}, Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables, 73 references

Abstract: Borexino is running at the INFN Gran Sasso National Laboraries, Italy since 2007. Its technical distinctive feature is the unprecedented ultralow background of the inner scintillating core, which is the foundation for the outstanding achievements accumulated by this experiment. In this contribution, after recalling the main features of the detector, the impressive solar data gathered so far by Borexino will be summarized. Special emphasis will be given to the illustration of the recent release of the fluxes as stemming from the simultaneous real time spectroscopy of the neutrinos from the entire $pp$ nuclear fusion chain in the Sun, opening with the remarkable 2.7% accuracy of the ⁷Be flux the era of precision measurements also in the realm of the sub-MeV solar neutrinos. Such results put Borexino in the unique situation of being the only detector able to perform solar neutrino spectroscopy over the entire solar spectrum; the counterpart of this peculiar status, in the flavor conversion interpretation of the solar neutrino data, is the capability of Borexino alone to perform the full validation across the solar energy range of the MSW-LMA paradigm. This contribution will be concluded with an account of the Borexino accomplishments in the geo-neutrino field, marked by the detection of the geo-neutrino signal with a significance as high as $5.9\sigma$.

Abstract: The Borexino detector measures solar neutrino fluxes via neutrino-electron elastic scattering. Observed spectra are determined by the solar-$\nu_{e}$ survival probability $P_{ee}(E)$, and the chiral couplings of the neutrino and electron. Some theories of physics beyond the Standard Model postulate the existence of Non-Standard Interactions (NSI's) which modify the chiral couplings and $P_{ee}(E)$. In this paper, we search for such NSI's, in particular, flavor-diagonal neutral current interactions that modify the $\nu_e e$ and $\nu_\tau e$ couplings using Borexino Phase II data. Standard Solar Model predictions of the solar neutrino fluxes for both high- and low-metallicity assumptions are considered. No indication of new physics is found at the level of sensitivity of the detector and constraints on the parameters of the NSI's are placed. In addition, with the same dataset the value of $\sin^2\theta_W$ is obtained with a precision comparable to that achieved in reactor antineutrino experiments., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures. Abstract: The latest and more complete geo-neutrinos Borexino results, are briefly presented and discussed. Borexino is a liquid scintillator detector located at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Italy, whose primary purpose is the real-time spectroscopy of low energy solar neutrinos. It is the only experiment so far to have provided an evidence of geo-neutrinos existence beyond a 5σ significance level. The geo-neutrinos measurement and analysis, along with implications from the geological point of view, are shortly discussed.

Abstract: Solar neutrinos have played a central role in the discovery of the neutrino oscillation mechanism. They still are proving to be a unique tool to help investigate the fusion reactions that power stars and further probe basic neutrino properties. The Borexino neutrino observatory has been operationally acquiring data at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy since 2007. Its main goal is the real-time study of low energy neutrinos (solar or originated elsewhere, such as geo-neutrinos). The latest analysis of experimental data, taken during the so-called Borexino Phase-II (2011-present), will be showcased in this talk - yielding new high-precision, simultaneous wide band flux measurements of the four main solar neutrino components belonging to the "pp" fusion chain (pp, pep, 7Be, 8B), as well as upper limits on the remaining two solar neutrino fluxes (CNO and hep).

Abstract: International audience; In more than ten years of operation, Borexino has performed a precision measurement of the solar neutrino spectrum, resolving almost all spectral components originating from the proton-proton fusion chain. The presentation will review the results recently released for the second data taking phase 2012–2016 during which the detector excelled by its unprecedentedly low background levels. New results on the rate of pp, 7Be, pep and 8B neutrinos as well as their implications for solar neutrino oscillations and metallicity are discussed.

Abstract: International audience; Borexino measured with unprecedented accuracy the fluxes of solar neutrinos emitted at all the steps of the pp fusion chain. Still missing is the measurement of the flux of neutrinos produced in the CNO cycle. A positive measurement of the CNO neutrino flux is of fundamental importance for understanding the evolution of stars and addressing the unresolved controversy on the solar abundances. The measurement of the CNO neutrino flux in Borexino is challenging because of the low intensity of this component (CNO cycle accounts for about 1% of the energy emitted by Sun), the lack of prominent spectral features and the presence of background sources. The main background component is 210Bi decaying in the liquid scintillator of Borexino that creates events with an energy distribution very close to the one of CNO neutrino interactions. Since 2015 the collaboration undertook significant efforts to achieve an independent measurement of the background affecting a CNO measurement, whose impact on the sensitivity to a CNO signal will be discussed.

Abstract: International audience; About 99 per cent of solar energy is produced through sequences of nuclear reactions that convert hydrogen into helium, starting from the fusion of two protons (the pp chain). The neutrinos emitted by five of these reactions represent a unique probe of the Sun’s internal working and, at the same time, offer an intense natural neutrino beam for fundamental physics. Here we report a complete study of the pp chain. We measure the neutrino–electron elastic-scattering rates for neutrinos produced by four reactions of the chain: the initial proton–proton fusion, the electron-capture decay of beryllium-7, the three-body proton–electron–proton (pep) fusion, here measured with the highest precision so far achieved, and the boron-8 beta decay, measured with the lowest energy threshold. We also set a limit on the neutrino flux produced by the$^{3}$He–proton fusion (hep). These measurements provide a direct determination of the relative intensity of the two primary terminations of the pp chain (pp-I and pp-II) and an indication that the temperature profile in the Sun is more compatible with solar models that assume high surface metallicity. We also determine the survival probability of solar electron neutrinos at different energies, thus probing simultaneously and with high precision the neutrino flavour-conversion paradigm, both in vacuum and in matter-dominated regimes.

Abstract: International audience; The third phase of the Borexino experiment that’s referred to as SOX is devoted to test the hypothesis of the existence of one (or more) sterile neutrinos at a short baseline (~5–10m). The experimental measurement will be made with artificial sources namely with a 144Ce–144Pr antineutrino source at the first stage (CeSOX) and possibly with a 51Cr neutrino source at the second one. The fixed 144Ce–144Pr sample will be placed beneath the detector in a special pit and the initial activity will be about 100 – 150 kCi. The start of data taking is scheduled for April 2018. The article gives a short description of the preparation for the first stage and shows the expected sensitivity.

Abstract: International audience; Borexino is a liquid scintillator detector sited underground in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy). Its physics program, until the end of this year, is focussed on the study of solar neutrinos, in particular from the Beryllium, pp, pep and CNO fusion reactions. Knowing the reaction chains in the sun provides insights towards physics disciplines such as astrophysics (star physics, star formation, etc.), astroparticle and particle physics. Phase II started in 2011 and its aim is to improve the phase I results, in particular the measurements of the neutrino fluxes from the pep and CNO processes. By the end of this year, data taking from the sun will be over and a new project is scheduled to launch: Short distance Oscillation with boreXino (SOX), which uses a Cerium source for neutrinos (100÷150 kCi of activity) and aims to confirm or rule out the presence of sterile neutrinos. This particle is hypothesised to justify the reactor, Gallium and LSND anomalies found and can reject extensions to the standard model. The work presented is a summary of the solar neutrino results achieved so far, which lead not only to a precise study of the processes in the sun, but also to more Standard Model oriented measurements (such as the stability of the charge, i.e. the life time of the electron). Furthermore, the perspectives of the SOX program are discussed showing the experiment sensitivity to a fourth neutrino state covering almost entirely 3σ of the preferred region of the anomalous neutrino experiments, and additional applications of the detector such as the study of geo-neutrinos.

Abstract: We describe the Monte Carlo (MC) simulation package of the Borexino detector and discuss the agreement of its output with data. The Borexino MC 'ab initio' simulates the energy loss of particles in all detector components and generates the resulting scintillation photons and their propagation within the liquid scintillator volume. The simulation accounts for absorption, reemission, and scattering of the optical photons and tracks them until they either are absorbed or reach the photocathode of one of the photomultiplier tubes. Photon detection is followed by a comprehensive simulation of the readout electronics response. The algorithm proceeds with a detailed simulation of the electronics chain. The MC is tuned using data collected with radioactive calibration sources deployed inside and around the scintillator volume. The simulation reproduces the energy response of the detector, its uniformity within the fiducial scintillator volume relevant to neutrino physics, and the time distribution of detected photons to better than 1% between 100 keV and several MeV. The techniques developed to simulate the Borexino detector and their level of refinement are of possible interest to the neutrino community, especially for current and future large-volume liquid scintillator experiments such as Kamland-Zen, SNO+, and Juno.

Abstract: The paper reports the results of an experiment to assess the feasibility of including a photobioreactor within the design of a wastewater treatment plant, growing microalgae on the centrate from anaerobic sludge dewatering. The growth of algal biomass would take advantage of the available nitrogen and provide a substrate for biogas production by anaerobic digestion. Tests were carried out by semi-continuously feeding a photobioreactor with a centrate–effluent blend and by increasing the fraction of centrate. The experimental results show that the centrate does not induce any toxicity and, on the contrary, can be well utilized by microalgae, whose average specific growth rate (μ), on centrate as such, was between 0.04 and 0.06 d−1. The maximum biomass concentration in the photobioreactor effluent was 1.6 gSS/L at 10 days HRT (hydraulic retention time). Methane production tests led to biochemical methane production values of 335 ± 39, and 284 ± 68 mL 0°C, 1 atm CH4/g VS for the two tested samples, in agreement with literature values. Settling tests show that the settling capacity of microalgae, although satisfactory, could be effectively improved after mixing with activated sludge, confirming the potential to use the existing primary settler for microalgae thickening in order to feed microalgae for anaerobic digestion with primary/secondary sludge.

Abstract: We detected the seasonal modulation of the $^7$Be neutrino interaction rate with the Borexino detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. The period, amplitude, and phase of the observed time evolution of the signal are consistent with its solar origin, and the absence of an annual modulation is rejected at 99.99\% C.L. 39. Outer crust of a cold non-accreting magnetar

Abstract: The outer crust structure and composition of a cold, non-accreting magnetar is studied. We model the outer crust to be made of fully equilibrated matter where ionized nuclei form a Coulomb crystal embedded in an electron gas. The main effects of the strong magnetic field are those of quantizing the electron motion in Landau levels and of modifying the nuclear single particle levels producing, on average, an increased binding of nucleons in nuclei present in the Coulomb lattice. The effect of an homogeneous and constant magnetic field on nuclear masses has been predicted by using a covariant density functional, in which induced currents and axial deformation due to the presence of a magnetic field that breaks time-reversal symmetry have been included self-consistently in the nucleon and meson equations of motion. Although not yet observed, for $B\gtrsim 10^{16}$G both effects contribute to produce different compositions and to enlarge the range of pressures typically present in common neutron stars. Specifically, in such a regime, the magnetic field effects on nuclei favor the appearance of heavier nuclei at low pressures. 40. Isolation of large numbers of enriched human megakaryocytes from liquid cultures of normal peripheral blood progenitor cells

Abstract: Investigations linking human megakaryocyte development and cell biology have been hindered by an inability to obtain large, relatively pure megakaryocyte cell preparations from in vitro stem cell cultures. We report here that such preparations can be generated from liquid cultures of normal human peripheral blood mononuclear cells stimulated by a serum source of megakaryocyte colony stimulating activity (Meg- CSA, the 0% to 60% ammonium sulfate protein fraction of aplastic canine serum). Adherent-depleted peripheral blood mononuclear cells are suspended at 5 x 10(5) to 10(6) cells/mL in supplemented liquid culture medium, platelet-poor human plasma 20% (vol/vol) and 1 to 2 mg/mL serum Meg-CSA protein. After 12 to 14 days of incubation, megakaryocytes constitute 3.0 +/- 2.9% (mean +/- SD, n = 8) of the unseparated cultured cell population. Megakaryocytes can be enriched by counterflow centrifugal elutriation to a purity of 58 +/- 14% (+/- SD) with a recovery of 13 +/- 7% and a viability of 67 +/- 19%. This algorithm results in the average isolation of approximately 3 x 10(5) enriched megakaryocytes from a 100-mL starting volume of peripheral blood. Cultured megakaryocytes exhibit normal light and ultrastructural morphology by Wright-Giemsa staining and electron microscopic analysis. After a 12-day culture interval, enriched megakaryocyte preparations exhibit morphologic stage distributions that are similar to normal human marrow. Stage distributions move rightward with culture duration indicating partial synchrony of megakaryocyte maturation. On cytospin preparations, megakaryocyte diameter averages 30.2 +/- 1.5 microns and increases with maturation stage. Flow cytometric analyses demonstrate the expression of platelet glycoproteins (GP) Ib and IIb/IIIa by the cultured megakaryocytes. The modal ploidy of the enriched cells at day 12 of culture is 16N and most remaining megakaryocytes are 8N or 32N. 41. Nitrogen Removal in Fixed-Bed Submerged Biofilters without Backwashing

Abstract: The paper reports the findings of four years of pilot-scale research on nitrogen removal in fixed-bed biofilters fed on real raw municipal wastewater. The plant was made of two fixed-bed biofilm reactors in series with an intermediate settling tank from which excess biomass from the first stage was discharged. The first filter was used for carbon removal either with oxygen or nitrates. The second filter was used for nitrification. The average nitrification rate at 20°C was 0.84 gNH 4 + -N m −2 d −1 with 5 mg l −1 dissolved oxygen in the bulk liquid. Temperature dependence was calculated (r n = r n,20° 1,05 T-20 ). The influent organic load strongly affected ammonia oxidation. If the organic loading exceeded 2.5 gCOD m −2 d −1 nitrification rate was reduced by 50%. Denitrification was performed by recycling nitrates back from the second filter and by using sewage itself as carbon source. Denitrification rate showed to be strongly dependent on temperature (r d = r d,20° 1.11 T-20 ) and on the recycle rate. Hydrolysis of the colloidal COD fraction showed a similar dependence on both temperature and recycle rate. Therefore, it has been concluded that the hydrolysis of finely dispersed COD particles can be the limiting step of denitrification in the biofilter when real sewage is used as carbon source.

Abstract: International audience; The SOX (Short distance neutrino Oscillations with BoreXino) experiment aims to perform a resolutive measurement for testing the longstanding hypotesis of a sterile neutrino in the eV$^2$ mass scale. A very intense and well calibrated $^{144}Ce-^{144}Pr$ antineutrino source will be placed under the large size and very low background Borexino detector at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. Borexino demonstrated a such energy and position resolution that the disappearance experiment can be performed and the short distance oscillations might be directly observed. In this paper an overview of the key elements of the experiment is given and the expected sensitivity to determine the sterile neutrino mass is shown.

Abstract: A comprehensive measurement of solar neutrino fluxes has been completed using the Borexino Phase-II data in an extended energy range. The measurement reports pp, 7Be and pep neutrino fluxes with the highest precision ever achieved, 8B with the lowest energy threshold, the first Borexino limit on hep neutrinos, as well as the best limit on CNO neutrinos. These results and their physics interpretations concerning the so-called solar metallicity puzzle and the electron-neutrino survival probability, as well as other highlights of the analysis, have been summarized in this talk.

Abstract: We present the results of a low-energy neutrino search using the Borexino detector in coincidence with the gravitational wave (GW) events GW 150914, GW 151226, and GW 170104. We searched for correlated neutrino events with visible energies greater than 250 keV within a time window of ±500 s centered around the GW detection time. A total of five candidates were found for all three GW events combined. This is consistent with the expected number of solar neutrino and background events. As a result, we have obtained the best current upper limits on all flavor neutrino () fluence associated with GW events, in the neutrino energy range 0.5–5.0 MeV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: We present an improved measurement of the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) solar neutrino interaction rate at Earth obtained with the complete Borexino Phase-III dataset. The measured rate, R_{CNO}=6.7_{-0.8}^{+2.0} counts/(day×100 tonnes), allows us to exclude the absence of the CNO signal with about 7σ C.L. The correspondent CNO neutrino flux is 6.6_{-0.9}^{+2.0}×10^{8} cm^{-2} s^{-1}, taking into account the neutrino flavor conversion. We use the new CNO measurement to evaluate the C and N abundances in the Sun with respect to the H abundance for the first time with solar neutrinos. Our result of N_{CN}=(5.78_{-1.00}^{+1.86})×10^{-4} displays a ∼2σ tension with the "low-metallicity" spectroscopic photospheric measurements. Furthermore, our result used together with the ^{7}Be and ^{8}B solar neutrino fluxes, also measured by Borexino, permits us to disfavor at 3.1σ C.L. the "low-metallicity" standard solar model B16-AGSS09met as an alternative to the "high-metallicity" standard solar model B16-GS98.

Abstract: We report the measurement of sub-MeV solar neutrinos through the use of their associated Cherenkov radiation, performed with the Borexino detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. The measurement is achieved using a novel technique that correlates individual photon hits of events to the known position of the Sun. In an energy window between 0.54 to 0.74 MeV, selected using the dominant scintillation light, we have measured 10 887_{-2103}^{+2386}(stat)±947(syst) (68% confidence interval) solar neutrinos out of 19 904 total events. This corresponds to a ^{7}Be neutrino interaction rate of 51.6_{-12.5}^{+13.9} counts/(day·100 ton), which is in agreement with the standard solar model predictions and the previous spectroscopic results of Borexino. The no-neutrino hypothesis can be excluded with >5σ confidence level. For the first time, we have demonstrated the possibility of utilizing the directional Cherenkov information for sub-MeV solar neutrinos, in a large-scale, high light yield liquid scintillator detector. This measurement provides an experimental proof of principle for future hybrid event reconstruction using both Cherenkov and scintillation signatures simultaneously.

Abstract: Are concepts expressed in language also represented spatially? To pursue this question we investigated the structure of events. Events are defined as actions with spatial trajectories that can be perceived by our senses and described in language. Events are expressed linguistically in sentences containing verbs which determine the thematic roles of the arguments (e.g., who is doing what to whom, where). Because of previous observations we focused on whether events are represented spatially by location of thematic roles and direction of actions. Location and direction were dissociated by contrasting different kinds of verbs: 'push' vs 'pull' in which actions move toward or away from the agent. To control for spatial effects produced by the surface structure of a left to right written language, we kept the structure of sentences constant and sought for spatial biases produced by differences in the meaning of these sentences. From three experiments using drawing and sentence-picture matching reaction time tasks, we found that normal subjects located agents to the left of patients and represented actions with a left to right directionality. These results are not easily explained by features of the surface structure of language or properties of propositional representations. We suggest that events have spatial representations in addition to their propositional counterparts of verbs and thematic roles. The specific spatial properties observed may relate to functional properties of the left hemisphere.
