Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of hyperopia and strabismus among a paediatric population with malocclusions.From a total of 322 consecutive patients observed at the department of Orthodontics and Gnathology, Dental Clinic, University of L'Aquila, 176 were selected for the study according to the exclusion criteria. Pretreatment diagnostic data, which included radiographic, cephalometric and dental cast evaluation, were recorded and presence of hyperopia or strabismus was assessed through an ophthalmological examination. Differences in incidence rates of strabismus or hyperopia by sex and malocclusion were analysed by using the chi-square (Pearson's chi-square test) and Fisher's exact tests.According to the sagittal malocclusion, patients were classified as Class I (122), Class II division 1 (26), Class II Division 2 (9), or Class III (19); after ophthalmological examination, hyperopia was detected in 8.6% of patients, while strabismus was present in 3.6% of them. No gender influence was found for hyperopia, strabismus or malocclusion.Few studies investigated a possible relationship between the ocular and stomatognathic system, and no data are available in the scientific literature; the present study did not highlight differences in the prevalence of hyperopia or strabismus in the three Angle classes malocclusion.The findings of the present study did not suggest a possible association between hyperopia or strabismus and sagittal malocclusion, but future studies are needed to confirm and explain this observation.

Abstract

Transformation of hematopoietic cells by the Bcr-abl oncoprotein leads to constitutive tyrosine phosphorylation of a number of cellular polypeptides that function in normal growth factor-dependent cell proliferation. Recent studies have shown that the CrkL adaptor protein and the Cbl protooncoprotein are constitutively tyrosine phosphorylated and form a preformed complex in cells expressing Bcr-abl. In the current study, we have examined cytokine-dependent tyrosine phosphorylation of Cbl and its association with Crk proteins. Erythropoietin (EPO) and interleukin-3 induced a dose and time-dependent tyrosine phosphorylation of Cbl in both EPO-dependent Ba/F3 and DA-3 transfectants, and the erythroid cell line HCD-57. Furthermore, once phosphorylated, Cbl associated with Crk adaptor proteins. Of the three Crk isoforms expressed in hematopoietic cells (CrkL, CrkII, and CrkI), tyrosine phosphorylated Cbl binds preferentially to CrkL and CrkII. The amount of Cbl associated with CrkL and CrkII exceeded the fraction of Cbl associated with Grb2 indicating that unlike other receptor systems, the Cbl-Crk association represents the dominant complex of Cbl in growth factor-stimulated hematopoietic cells. In factor-dependent hematopoietic cell lines, CrkL constitutively associated with the guanine nucleotide release factor, C3G, which is known to interact via Crk src-homology 3 (SH3) domains. Our data suggest that the inducible Cbl-Crk association is a proximal component of a signaling pathway downstream of multiple cytokine receptors

Pretreatment diagnostic data, which included radiographic cephalometric and dental cast evaluation, were recorded and presence of myopia was assessed through an ophthalmological examination. Differences in the prevalence of myopia by sex and malocclusion were analysed by using Pearson's chi-square and Fisher's exact tests.According to the sagittal malocclusion, patients were classified as Class I (N=162), Class II division 1 (N=75), Class II division 2 (N=38), or Class III (N=12). No gender influence was found for myopia or malocclusion. No differences were recorded when analysing the influence of sex on the prevalence of myopia in classes of malocclusion. A statistical significant higher prevalence was found for subjects showing myopia in Class II division 1 malocclusion, while no other significant differences were found for prevalence in the other classes of malocclusions.Few studies investigated a possible relationship between the ocular and stomatognathic system, and no data are available in the scientific literature. A higher prevalence of myopia was found in patients with Class II division 1: as expected no other significant association was found.The findings of the present study suggest a possible association between myopia and Class II, but further studies are needed to confirm and explain this observation.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of astigmatism among a paediatric population.A total of 322 consecutive patients of the department of Orthodontics and Gnathology, Dental Clinic, University of L'Aquila, were enlisted for the study and 176 were selected according to the exclusion criteria. Pre- treatment diagnostic data, which included radiographic cephalometric and dental cast evaluation, were recorded and presence of astigmatism was assessed through an ophthalmological examination. Differences in the prevalence of astigmatism by sex and malocclusion were analysed by using the chi-square (Pearson's chi-square test) and Fisher's exact tests.According to the sagittal malocclusion, patients were classified as Class I (N=122), Class II Division 1 (N=26), Class II Division 2 (N=9), or Class III (N=19); according to the transverse malocclusion patients were classified into cross-bite (N=39) and no cross-bite (N=137) groups; after ophthalmological examination astigmatism was detected in 32 patients (18.18%). Statistically significant correlations were found between astigmatism and cross-bite (p0.0001), while no associations were found with other malocclusions. No gender influence was found for astigmatism or malocclusion.Few study investigated a possible relationship between the ocular and stomatognathic system, and no data are available in the scientific literature. A higher prevalence of astigmatism was found in patients with cross-bite: as expected no other significant association was found. The relationship between astigmatism and cross-bite could be either related to a specific skeletal pattern, which could induce visual alterations, or to the effect of abnormal visual input on the postural system, which could induce stomatognathic alterations.The findings of the present study suggest a possible association between astigmatism and cross-bite, but future studies are needed to confirm and explain this observation.

Abstract

International audience; Purpose: To investigate and compare the quantitative accuracy of (90)Y imaging across different generation PET/CT scanners, for the purpose of dosimetry after radioembolization with resin microspheres.Methods: A strict experimental and imaging protocol was followed by 47 international sites using the NEMA 2007/IEC 2008 PET body phantom with an 8-to-1 sphere-to-background ratio of (90)Y solution. The phantom was imaged over a 7-day period (activity ranging from 0.5 to 3.0 GBq) and all reconstructed data were analysed at a core laboratory for consistent processing. Quantitative accuracy was assessed through measures of total phantom activity, activity concentration in background and hot spheres, misplaced counts in a nonradioactive insert, and background variability.Results: Of the 69 scanners assessed, 37 had both time-of-flight (ToF) and resolution recovery (RR) capability. These current generation scanners from GE, Philips and Siemens could reconstruct background concentration measures to within 10% of true values over the evaluated range, with greater deviations on the Philips systems at low count rates, and demonstrated typical partial volume effects on hot sphere recovery, which dominated spheres of diameter 20 mm in diameter, activity concentrations were consistently underestimated by about 20%. Non-ToF scanners from GE Healthcare and Siemens were capable of producing accurate measures, but with inferior quantitative recovery compared with ToF systems.Conclusion: Current generation ToF scanners can consistently reconstruct (90)Y activity concentrations, but they underestimate activity concentrations in small structures (≤37 mm diameter) within a warm background due to partial volume effects and constraints of the reconstruction algorithm. At the highest count rates investigated, measures of background concentration (about 300 kBq/ml) could be estimated on average to within 1%, 5% and 2% for GE Healthcare (all-pass filter, RR + ToF), Philips (4i8s ToF) and Siemens (2i21s all-pass filter, RR + ToF) ToF systems, respectively. Over the range of activities investigated, comparable performance between GE Healthcare and Siemens ToF systems suggests suitability for quantitative analysis in a scenario analogous to that of postradioembolization imaging for treatment of liver cancer.
