Summary Public health technical expertise is of crucial importance to inform decision makers’ action in the field of health and its broader determinants. Improving education and training of public health professionals for both practice and research is the starting point to strengthen the role of public health so that current health challenges can be efficiently tackled. At the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER) Deans’ & Directors’ 2017 Annual Retreat, we presented the structure and management of public health training system in Italy, and we reported recent data on Italian public health specialists’ educational experience, employment opportunities and job satisfaction. Public health training in Italy is implemented in the context of the post-graduate medical education residency programme in Hygiene and Preventive Medicine, delivered by 34 University-based Schools of Public Health. We report relatively high employment rates across the county and wide spectrum of career opportunities for young public health specialists. However, job security is low and training expectations only partially met. We call upon other Schools of Public Health to scale up the survey within the broad ASPHER community in a shared and coordinated action of systematically collecting useful data that can inform the development of public health education and training models, their implementation and fruitful interaction with population health, health systems and services.

To document reported Intubator Associated Pneumonia (IAP) prevention practices in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and attitudes towards the implementation of a measurement system. In the framework of the SPIN-UTI project the «Italian Nosocomial Infections Surveillance in ICUs network», two questionnaires were made available online. The first was filled out by physicians working in ICUs in order to collect data on characteristics of physicians and ICUs, on clinical and measurement practices for IAP prevention, and attitudes towards the implementation of a measurement system. The second questionnaire was filled out for each intubated patient in order to collect data on prevention practices during ICU stay.ICUs participating to the fourth edition (2012-2013) of the SPIN-UTI project.Compliance to the component of the European bundle. The components of the bundle for the prevention of IAP are implemented, although to a different level, in the 26 participating ICUs. Overall compliance to all five practices of the European bundle has been reported in 21.1% of the 768 included patients. The present survey has documented a large potential for improvement in clinical and non-clinical practices aimed at preventing IAP in ICUs.

Background: Cardiovascular diseases represent the leading cause of death in Italy and one of the most frequent cause of disability in the elderly. The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of age and sex of patient on the utilisation of cardiac procedure and interventions in Italy. Methods: Retrospective analysis of 2805 patients' medical case notes in cardiology, internal medicine and elderly clinics in six Italian Regions during the period 1996–1997, considering coronary catheterisation (CC), percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PCTA), coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), thrombolysis (THR) and permanent pacemaker (PPM) implantation. Results: Older patients (more than 75 years old) were less likely to undergo CC (OR=0.062). Trends for age and sex did not achieve significance for CAGB (OR=0.815 for older patient). Age is a strong predictor of receiving PTCA, with the oldest group of patients being discriminated (OR=0.093 for people older than 75 years), and the same trend was observed for THR (OR=0.264 for patients older than 75 years). For PPM, older patient has a higher likelihood of receiving this type of intervention (OR=3.45 for 65–74 years, and OR=7.77 for patients older than 75 years). As far as gender of patients is concerned, statistically significant differences for all cardiac procedures or interventions considered were not found. Conclusions: Clinical management of older patients with cardiac disease in Italy may be different from that of younger patients. One possible explanation would be that these patients are being discriminated against mainly because of their age.

- Abstract
SUMMARYEncephalitis generally results in a serious illness requiring hospitalization. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiology of hospitalization for encephalitis in Italy, taking into account the geographical distribution, aetiology, seasonality and evolution of hospitalization rates over recent years. The mean hospitalization rate was 5·88/100 000. For most of these hospitalizations (n=13 119, 55·6%), no specific cause of encephalitis was reported. The most common aetiological category was 'viral', which accounted for 40·1% (n=4205) of such hospitalizations (rate 1·05/100 000). Within this category, herpes virus was the leading causative agent (n=1579, 0·39/100 000). This report highlights a significant increase of 'viral encephalitis not otherwise specified' (ICD-9 code 049·9) vs. a reduction of all other causes. A seasonal pattern was noted in people aged 65 years in this group. Specific surveillance of encephalitis without known origin should be reinforced in order to identify the potential role of emerging pathogens and to design preventive interventions. Background: The Italian Study Group on Hospital Hygiene of the Italian Society of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine and Public Health conducted a multicentre survey aiming to evaluate undergraduate health care students’ knowledge of tuberculosis and tuberculosis control measures in Italy. Methods: In October 2012–June 2013, a sample of medical and nursing students from 15 Italian universities were enrolled on a voluntary basis and asked to complete an anonymous questionnaire investigating both general knowledge of tuberculosis (aetiology, clinical presentation, outcome, screening methods) and personal experiences and practices related to tuberculosis prevention. Data were analysed through multivariable regression using Stata software. Results: The sample consisted of 2,220 students in nursing (72.6%) and medicine (27.4%) courses. Our findings clearly showed that medical students had a better knowledge of tuberculosis than did nursing students. Although the vast majority of the sample (up to 95%) answered questions about tuberculosis aetiology correctly, only 60% of the students gave the correct responses regarding clinical aspects and vaccine details. Overall, 66.9% of the students had been screened for tuberculosis, but less than 20% of those with a negative result on the tuberculin skin test were vaccinated. Multivariable regression analysis showed that age and type of study programme (nursing vs. medical course) were determinants of answering the questions correctly. Conclusions: Although our data showed sufficient knowledge on tuberculosis, this survey underlines the considerable need for improvement in knowledge about the disease, especially among nursing students. In light of the scientific recommendations concerning tuberculosis knowledge among students, progress of current health care curricula aimed to develop students’ skills in this field is needed.

In Italy there are no rules concerning the establishment of a hospital hygiene structure in hospitals and other healthcare settings, and the hospital organization plans vary widely. The aim of the survey, carried out by the Italian Study Group of Hospital Hygiene of the Italian Society of Hygiene, Preventive medicine and Public health, was to evaluate the presence in the hospital organization plan of a structure referred to as Hospital hygiene, or including in its denomination the words "hygiene" or "hospital hygiene", the activities carried out, the relation to other areas, like patient safety, the type and quantity of professionals involved, the strengths and the critical aspects.A semi-structured questionnaire was administered to Healthcare Trusts representing all Italian Regions through the members of the above Study Group.35 Trusts, 13 in Northern, 8 in Central, 14 in Southern Italy (including Sicily and Sardinia), completed the questionnaire. In 19 Trusts (54.3%) a structure whose denomination included the words "hospital hygiene" or "hygiene" was present. The activities related to the management of infectious risk were most represented, carried out autonomously or in collaboration, but many other activities were covered. In all hospitals the activities of the Hospital Hygiene Unit inter-linked with those of the clinical risk, with different forms of collaboration. This survey, even though on a limited sample, provided a picture of hospital hygiene at a national level, showing a considerable heterogeneity and highlighting critical issues but also strengths. It is essential to share organizational and management models that enhance and promote hospital hygiene, to ensure the appropriateness of healthcare practices offered in a safe and comfortable environment to patients, operators, and visitors.

Background: Vaccine hesitancy is a considerable issue in European countries and leads to low coverage rates. After a long debate, Italy has made vaccination mandatory for admission to its schools. Methods: In the NAVIDAD study (a cross-sectional multicentre study), a 63-item questionnaire was administered to 1820 pregnant women from 15 Italian cities. The questionnaire assessed the interviewee's opinion on mandatory vaccines, as well as their socioeconomic status, sources of information about vaccines, confidence in the Italian National Healthcare Service (NHS), and intention to vaccinate their newborn. Results: Information sources play a key role in determining the opinion on restoration of mandatory vaccines; in particular, women who obtained information from anti-vaccination movements are less likely to accept the vaccines (OR: 0.35, 95% CI: 0.21-0.58, p < 0.001). Women who had confidence in healthcare professional information agreed more on mandatory vaccination than did the other women (OR: 2.66, 95% CI: 1.62-4.36, p < 0.001); those who perceived that healthcare professionals have economic interest in child immunization and who declared that healthcare providers inform only on vaccinations benefits not on risks were less likely to agree on compulsory vaccination (OR: 0.66, CI 95%: 0.46-0.96, p = 0.03; OR: 0.66, CI 95%: 0.46-0.95, p = 0.03, respectively). Conclusion: Information sources and confidence towards health professionals are the main determinants of acceptance of mandatory vaccine restoration. To increase the acceptability of the restoration and reduce vaccine hesitancy, these aspects need to be strengthened.

In 2014, the Italian Study Group of Hospital Hygiene of the Italian Society of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine and Public Health (GISIO-SItI), in collaboration with the National Association of Medical Hospital Managers (ANMDO), conducted a survey on the availability of procedures for cleaning and disinfecting ambulances in order to assess the practices in use.An online questionnaire was prepared through the Survey Monkey® platform and a web link access was sent to a convenience sample of ANMDO doctors working in healthcare management in public and private healthcare facilities.Ninety-six questionnaires were collected (26% response rate). In 73% of cases there was a procedure for cleaning and disinfecting ambulances, which had been produced at a company level (67%) and involved various professionals. In 21% of cases the procedure had been prepared in expectation of an epidemic or following an epidemic (5%). The recommendations had been presented to the staff (90%), in 28% of cases through training events with verification of the knowledge acquired. Monitoring of the implementation of the procedure is planned in the majority of cases (88%), mainly through direct observation (92%). In 67% of cases the tender specifications for ambulance services did not include a section dedicated to cleaning and disinfection and, in the absence of a procedure, this was provided by the hospital in only 51% of case. This survey represented a first step towards the development of guidelines for standardising procedures and providing indications useful for their evaluation and monitoring their implementation.

OBJECTIVES: The diagnosis and control of hypertension depend on accurate measurement of blood pressure (BP). The literature on the accuracy of BP recording by health professionals is, however, limited, and no study directly interviewed patients in the hospital setting. This multicenter cross-sectional study aimed at evaluating the compliance to current recommendations on BP measurement by health professionals directly from patients and to investigate potential predictors of higher quality in BP recording. METHODS: A trained nurse interviewed a random sample of adult patients hospitalized for an ordinary admission (except in the emergency room) lasting more than one night, without mental disorder, who had their BP routinely measured by the hospital personnel less than 3 h before. The questionnaire contained 15 items on the main procedures that are common to current guidelines. RESULTS: Fourteen public hospitals from seven regions of Italy participated, and 1334 questionnaires were collected. Nine of the recommended practices were followed in the majority (>70%) of BP recordings, whereas some others were infrequent or rare: in 98.6, 82.2 and 81.1% of the participants, respectively, the arm circumference was never recorded, BP was measured only once, and BP was never recorded in both arms. Overall, 10 or more recommended procedures were followed during 33.4% recordings. At multivariate analysis, physicians were less likely than nurses to provide a more accurate BP measurement. CONCLUSIONS: The operator's compliance to some recommendations in BP measurement is unacceptably low. This survey provides detailed indications for medical directors on the procedures and settings to prioritize in educational programs, which are definitely needed.

- Abstract
Background/Objectives: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is widespread and mostly causes asymptomatic infections in immunocompetent hosts, but it may lead to severe and life-threatening diseases in immunocompromised individuals, such as transplant patients and congenitally infected children, representing a significant public health concern. Although there are no licensed CMV vaccines, the development of a CMV vaccine is considered a high priority due to its potential to reduce the burden associated with CMV-related complications, and several approaches are under investigation. The objective of this systematic review was to synthesize the evidence on various CMV vaccines currently under clinical development. Methods : According to the PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO ID: CRD42024516601), a comprehensive literature search was conducted to identify all the randomized controlled trials that have evaluated the safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy of vaccine candidates compared to a placebo. A total of 26 studies were identified: 11 on transplant patients and 15 on healthy individuals. Results : Several vaccine candidates have shown encouraging results in terms of safety and specific immune responses, notably adjuvanted gB vaccines and DNA vaccines targeting gB and pp65. The results were divided into RCTs on healthy individuals and those on transplant recipients, because the CMV-specific immune response to a vaccine is complex and varies depending not only on the type of vaccine, but also on the immunological status of the individual. Conclusions : Challenges remain in achieving broad efficacy across diverse populations, particularly for immunocompromised patients. Thus, the present work seeks to support future decisions and guide further research in the development of an effective and widely available CMV vaccine.

- Abstract
Background and Aim: Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index is a widely used test for non-invasively assessing liver fibrosis. We aimed to investigate the association between FIB-4 index and risk of all-cause mortality in patients at high cardiovascular (CV) risk and to determine whether coexisting renal dysfunction mediates this association., Methods and Results: Single-center prospective study of 994 patients with established or suspected coronary artery disease undergoing coronary angiography, followed for a median of 44 months. Mortality data were obtained through the Italian Health Card Database. At baseline, the median FIB-4 index was greater in deceased vs. alive patients (1.71 vs. 1.38, p < 0.001) and in those with reduced eGFR than in those with normal eGFR (1.65 vs. 1.37, p < 0.001). For each unit increase in the baseline log-FIB-4 index, the risk of all-cause mortality sharply increased during the follow-up (hazard ratio [HR] 2.31, 95%CI 1.31-4.08, p = 0.004). Similarly, assuming the lowest baseline FIB-4 risk category as the reference, the risk of all-cause mortality progressively increased across the indeterminate (HR 1.82, 95%CI 1.18-2.82, p = 0.007) and the highest baseline FIB-4 risk categories (HR 2.33, 95%CI 1.37-3.97; p = 0.002). A causal mediation analysis showed that about one-third of the effect of FIB-4 index on mortality risk was mediated by reduced eGFR (32.8 %, p = 0.01)., Conclusions: Increased FIB-4 index predicts the long-term risk of all-cause mortality in patients at high CV risk, and this risk is, at least in part, mediated by reduced eGFR. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm these findings., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2024 The Italian Diabetes Society, the Italian Society for the Study of Atherosclerosis, the Italian Society of Human Nutrition and the Department of Clinical Medicine and Surgery, Federico II University. - Abstract
Prostate cancer (PCa) is a common cancer among men, and it has a multifactorial etiology. Cadmium (Cd), a toxic heavy metal classified as a carcinogen by the IARC, can cause various acute and chronic effects. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to update previous findings on the association between Cd exposure and PCa. We carried out a literature search in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus up to May 2024, identifying eight new articles. The effect size from the highest and lowest exposure categories were extracted and analyzed using a random-effects model. Heterogeneity was assessed with the I
2 test, and publication bias was evaluated using funnel plot asymmetry. Overall, the effect size for PCa associated with Cd exposure, combining previous and new articles, was 1.11 (95% CI 0.85-1.45). Heterogeneity was high, but no significant publication bias was detected. For studies from Europe, the effect size was 1.47 (95% CI 1.00-2.17). Notably, 11 articles from the previous systematic review and meta-analysis highlighted that higher Cd exposure is significantly associated with more aggressive histopathological types of PCa (OR 1.50, 95% CI 1.08-2.07). These findings suggest a potential public health concern, indicating the need for further research to clarify the risk associated with Cd exposure.- Published

- Abstract
Coronary artery disease (CAD), particularly three-vessel coronary disease (3VD), is the main cause of death in industrialized countries. Chronic kidney disease is an independent risk factor for CAD. The CHA
2 DS2 -VASc score shows a good ability to predict CV events in high-risk population independently from atrial fibrillation. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association between the R2 CHA2 DS2 -VASc score and 3VD in a population of patients at high cardiovascular risk. Monocentric prospective study evaluated 1017 patients undergoing coronary angiography. The R2 CHA2 DS2 -VASc score was obtained by adding 2 points to the CHA2 DS2 -VASc score in case of eGFR < 60 ml/min/1.73m2 . Coronary lesions causing ≥ 50% reduction of a major epicardial vessel diameter were considered significant. Patients were grouped based on R2 CHA2 DS2 -VASc tertiles and according to the severity of CAD: 3VD vs No-3VD. The 3VD group showed significantly higher R2 CHA2 DS2 -VASc score than the No-3VD group (4.20 ± 2.18 vs 3.36 ± 2.06, p < 0.001). The risk of 3VD increased by 21% for every 1-point increase in the score (OR 1.21; 95% CI 1.13-1.28, p < 0.001). The prevalence of 3VD was higher among patients belonging to higher tertiles of R2 CHA2 DS2 -VASc (17.2% vs 26.7% vs 33.6% for first, second, and third tertile respectively, p < 0.001) with a risk more than doubled for the third tertile compared to the first one (OR 2.45; 95% CI 1.71-3.49, p < 0.001). The R2 CHA2 DS2 -VASc score is independently associated with 3VD in patients at high cardiovascular risk. The score could be considered a useful tool for clinicians to identify patients who are at high risk of 3VD., (© 2024. - Abstract
Plastic pollution is a growing concern. It can form smaller particles called microplastics (<5 mm). Microplastics can break down into even smaller pieces called nanoplastics (<1 μm). These minute particles can infiltrate human cells and tissues, with their health impacts still largely undetermined. On average, a liter of bottled water includes about 240,000 tiny pieces of plastic. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between the use of bottled plastic water (BW) and several health outcomes. Utilizing data from the Italian National Institute of Statistics' "Aspects of Daily Life" survey (N = 45,597), we employed logistic regression to explore the correlation between BW consumption and the prevalence of various chronic diseases, including hypertension, gastric/duodenal ulcers, and kidney stones. Adjustments were made for covariates such as education, age, gender, and economic resources. Our analysis indicated a statistically significant association between BW consumption and increased risk of hypertension (Odds ratio [OR] = 1.05, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.00-1.11), diabetes (OR = 1.09, 95% CI 1.01-1.18), gastric/duodenal ulcers (OR = 1.21, 95% CI 1.07-1.38), and kidney stones (OR = 1.17, 95% CI 1.03-1.32). The consumption of BW is associated with heightened risk for certain health conditions. Policymakers and healthcare providers should consider implementing targeted prevention strategies and awareness campaigns.

Objective: Psychological stress can be a common risk factor for the development of oral and systemic disease; therefore, analysis of a pathophysiologic mechanisms that may explain this association may be significant in planning preventive strategies. The aim of this study was to investigate the association amongst academic stress, periodontal health, and salivary cortisol and nitrite and nitrate levels in a sample of university students., Methods: Participants (N = 14) were classified into 2 groups according to their exposure to academic stress due to periods of university exams (n = 6 and n = 8, respectively). All participants were subjected evlauted for their behavioural, psychological, and anthropometric parameters, as well as an oral health examination. A real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis in samples of saliva and plaque was used to detect Prevotella intermedia and Veillonella dispar as well as the total bacterial count. Nitrite/nitrate ratio (NR ratio) and cortisol in saliva were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay., Results: Full Mouth Bleeding Score, Full Mouth Plaque Score, and Gingival Index were significantly higher in the group exposed to academic stress. Nitrite was directly related to the presence of V dispar (coefficient, 0.13; P = .00; CI, 0.07 to 0.19) and inversely related to total bacterial count (coefficient, -0.07; P = .012; CI, -0.13 to 0.02). NR ratio was directly related to V dispar (coefficient, 4.35; P = .010; 95% CI, 1.35 to 7.36) and inversely related to total bacterial count (coefficient, -4.05; P = .018; 95% CI, -7.32 to 0.86)., Conclusions: These results confirm the importance of stress on periodontal health and salivary nitrite concentration and highlight a potential differential role of specific bacteria on nitrite concentration in saliva., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest None disclosed., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. - Abstract
Hip fracture is a common condition in older adults, leading to disability and mortality. Several studies have demonstrated the association between nutritional status and the risk of a negative health outcome after fractures. In this systematic review, we evaluated the association between malnutrition and mortality, changes in mobility/living arrangements, and postoperative complications, such as delirium, in older patients with hip fractures. A literature search on the PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases, up to September 2023, was conducted to identify all studies involving older subjects that reported an association between MNA/GNRI/PNI/CONUT and health outcome after hip fracture. Meta-analysis was performed by a random-effects model using risk values (RR, OR, and HR) extracted from the 14 eligible selected studies. Malnutrition significantly increased the risk of any analyzed adverse outcome by 70% at 1 month, and up to 250% at 1 year. Malnutrition significantly increased delirium risk by 275% (OR = 2.75; 95% CI 1.80-4.18; p ≤ 0.05), mortality risk by 342% (OR = 3.42; 95% CI 2.14-5.48; p ≤ 0.05), mortality hazard risk by 351% (HR = 3.51; 95% CI 1.63-7.55; p ≤ 0.05) at 1 month, and transfer-to-more-supported-living-arrangements risk by 218% (OR = 2.18; 95% CI 1.58-3.01; p ≤ 0.05), and declined mobility risk by 41% (OR = 1.41; 95% CI 1.14-1.75; p ≤ 0.05), mortality risk by 368% (OR = 3.68; 95% CI 3.00-4.52; p ≤ 0.05), and mortality hazard risk by 234% (HR = 2.34; 95% CI 1.91-2.87; p ≤ 0.05) at 1 year. Malnutrition of older patients increases the risk of death and worsens mobility and independence after hip fractures. The results of the present study highlight the importance of nutritional status evaluation of older subjects with hip fractures in order to prevent potential adverse outcomes (Registration No: CRD42023468751).

- Abstract
Safe water is a global public health concern amid increasing scarcity and pollution. Bottled water production and consumption contribute to these problems. This study examines tap water consumption in Italy, assessing associated sociodemographic factors and related health outcomes such as obesity and self-perceived health status. Data from the Italian National Statistics Institute's "Aspects of daily life" survey (N = 45,597) were analyzed. Covariates included education, age, gender, economic status, region, concerns about waste and climate change, consumption of carbonated drinks excluding water, alcohol consumption, consumption of vegetables, consumption of snacks, body mass index, and self-perceived health status. Bivariate analyses and mixed-effect logistic regression models explored the associations. People who drink tap water made up 19,674, with a higher prevalence in people aged 45 to 59 old, people with a graduate/post-graduate degree diploma, with optimal economic resources, people concerned about waste production and climate change, and those coming from the north-east regions of Italy. Underweight people showed a higher prevalence of TW consumption as well as those who less than occasionally drank carbonated drinks, drank alcohol, consumed vegetables more than once a day and snacks less than once a week, dairy products more than once a day, sweet less than once a week, cured meat less than once a week, and chicken meat less than once a week, those with no consumption of sheep meat, consumption of beef meat less than once a week and consumption of pork meat less than once a week, and those with a satisfactory level of perceived health status. Regressions showed that all other age classes are less likely to drink tap water than people younger than 20 years old. The category with "inadequate" economic resources is more likely to consume tap water. Low educational classes show a low likelihood of consuming tap water as well as islands. A concern about waste production and climate change is associated with an increased likelihood of consuming tap water. Tap water consumption was negatively associated with obesity but not with a satisfactory self-perceived health status. Insights from this study can inform public health strategies.

- Abstract
Background: Several socioeconomic conditions may influence subjects' adherence to healthy eating habits. Food consumption may be influenced by external stress during crisis periods; however, the effects of these events on food habits are difficult to predict. Also, a pandemic crisis like the recent COVID-19 pandemic may have influenced dietary habits and food consumption. The objective of this study was to compare the dietary habits of Italian people before the COVID-19 pandemic with those belonging to the year 2020 in a nationwide population sample., Materials and Methods: Information on dietary habits has been obtained from the multi-purpose survey on families' "Aspects of daily life", carried out in Italy by the Italian National Statistics Institute (ISTAT). We analyzed data coming from 2016 and 2020 editions of the survey (43,000 subjects each year). We used population attributable fraction (PAF) adjusted for age, defined as the proportional reduction in unhealthy diet that would occur if all participants had had a higher education, assuming higher educated individuals as more socially advantaged. Prevalence association for each dietary exposition has been calculated through logistic regression., Results: Looking at aggregated data from 2016 and 2020 both men and women showed a high prevalence of unhealthy dietary habits. Regarding men, excessive consumption of eggs, pork meat, and bovine meat was characterized by a PAF attributable to socioeconomic conditions to an extent greater than 30%. Women showed the same trend. Focusing on different years of investigation, in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, men and women increased their consumption of eggs, cooked fats, snacks, and sweets, and reduced consumption of fruits and vegetables. Additionally, women increased the assumption of dietary products and meat. Both sexes registered an increase in overweight and obese subjects in 2020., Conclusions: To our knowledge, this study was the first in our country to use a yearly, nationwide sample to analyze dietary habits by examining specific types of various foods on a nationwide scale and establishing a correlation between these habits and the COVID-19 pandemic. Our results showed unbalanced dietary habits of the Italian population with an excess of consumption of several foods like eggs, cooked fats snacks, and sweets with low consumption of fruits and vegetables. Socioeconomic differences influence food choices but in a complex way since they seemed to affect some wrong dietary habits but not others, especially regarding fruits and vegetables assumption where differences were less evident among social classes. Outside stressors like a crisis period such as the COVID-19 pandemic seem to have an important role in both men and women regarding the assumption of so-called "junk food"., (© 2024. The Author(s).)
