Abstract

Radiative transition of an excited baryon to a nucleon with emission of a virtual massive photon converting to dielectron pair (Dalitz decays) provides important information about baryon-photon coupling at low q2 in timelike region. A prominent enhancement in the respective electromagnetic transition Form Factors (etFF) at q2 near vector mesons ρ/ω poles has been predicted by various calculations reflecting strong baryon-vector meson couplings. The understanding of these couplings is also of primary importance for the interpretation of the emissivity of QCD matter studied in heavy ion collisions via dilepton emission. Dedicated measurements of baryon Dalitz decays in proton-proton and pion-proton scattering with HADES detector at GSI/FAIR are presented and discussed. The relevance of these studies for the interpretation of results obtained from heavy ion reactions is elucidated on the example of the HADES results.

Abstract

The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment is a dedicated heavy ion collision experiment at the FAIR facility. It will be one of the first HEP experiments which works in a triggerless mode: data received in the DAQ from the detectors will not be associated with events by a hardware trigger anymore. All raw data within a giventime period will be collected continuously in containers, so-called time-slices. The task of the reconstruction algorithms is to create events out of this raw data stream. In this contribution, the optimization of the reconstruction software in the RICH detector to the free-streaming data flow is presented. The implementation of ring reconstruction algorithms which use time measurements of the hits as an additional parameter is discussed.

3. Tip-Induced $\beta$-Hydrogen Dissociation in an Alkyl Group Bound on Si(001)

Abstract

Atomic-scale chemical modification of surface-adsorbed ethyl groups on Si(001) was induced and studied by means of scanning tunneling microscopy. Tunneling at sample bias > +1.5V leads to tip-induced C-H cleavage of a $\beta$-hydrogen of the covalently bound ethyl configuration. The reaction is characterized by the formation of an additional Si-H and a Si-C bond. The reaction probability shows a linear dependence on the tunneling current at 300 K; the reaction is largely suppressed at 50 K. The observed tip-induced surface reaction at room temperature is thus attributed to a one-electron excitation in combination with thermal activation., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, and Supporting Information

4. Solution-based alkyne-azide coupling on functionalized Si(001) prepared under UHV conditions

Abstract

Synthesis of organic bi-layers on silicon was realized by a combination of surface functionalization under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions and solution-based click chemistry. The silicon (001) surface was prepared with a high degree of perfection in UHV and functionalized via chemoselective adsorption of ethinyl cyclopropyl cyclooctyne from the gas phase. A second organic layer was then coupled in acetonitrile via the copper-catalyzed alkyne azide click reaction. The samples were directly transferred from UHV via the vapour phase of the solvent into the solution of reactants and back to UHV without contact to ambient conditions. Each reaction step was monitored by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in UHV; the N 1s spectra clearly indicated the click reaction of the azide group in the two test molecules employed, i.e., methyl-subsituted benzylazide and azide substituted pyrene. In both cases, up to 50 - 60 % of the ethinyl cyclopropyl cyclooctyne molecules on the surface were reacted.

5. Click chemistry in ultra-high vacuum - tetrazine coupling with methyl enol ether covalently linked to Si(001)

Abstract

The additive-free tetrazine/enol ether click reaction was performed in ultra-high vacuum (UHV) with an enol ether group covalently linked to a silicon surface: Dimethyl 1,2,4,5-tetrazine-3,6-dicarboxylate molecules were coupled to the enol ether group of a functionalized cyclooctyne which was adsorbed on the silicon (001) surface via the strained triple bond of cyclooctyne. The reaction was observed at a surface temperature of 380 K by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). No indications for tetrazine molecules which bind directly to the Si(001) surface via the nitrogen atoms were detected. A moderate energy barrier was deduced for this click reaction in vacuum by means of density functional theory based calculations, in good agreement with the experimental results. This UHV-compatible click reaction thus opens a new, flexible route for synthesizing covalently bound organic architectures.

Abstract

Optical second-harmonic generation is demonstrated to be a sensitive probe of the buried interface between the lattice matched semiconductors gallium phosphide and silicon with (001) orientation. Rotational anisotropy measurements of SHG from GaP/Si show a strong isotropic component of the response not present for pure Si(001) or GaP(001). Abstract

Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 (sqrt(s_NN) = 2.7 - 4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials (mu_B > 500 MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation-of-state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. 15. Single-ion induced surface modifications on hydrogen-covered Si(001) surfaces - significant difference between slow highly charged and swift heavy ions

Abstract

Hydrogen-covered Si(001) surfaces were exposed to swift heavy ions (SHI) and slow highly charged ions (HCI). Using scanning tunneling microscopy as analysis tool, the ion-induced modifications on the surface were resolved on the atomic scale. SHI were found occasionally to lead to changes which are restricted to one or two Si surface atoms. In comparison, HCI form pits of several nanometers in diameter, depending on the potential energy of the HCI. These observations are in contrast to many material systems for which similar effects of SHI and HCI have been observed. The results suggest a high stopping power threshold for SHI-induced modifications in crystalline silicon with major implications for the application in silicon-based nanotechnology.

Abstract

We construct an obstruction theory for relative Hilbert schemes in the sense of Behrend-Fantechi and compute it explicitly for relative Hilbert schemes of divisors on smooth projective varieties. In the special case of curves on a surface V, our obstruction theory determines a virtual fundamental class $[[ \Hilb^m_V ]]$, which we use to define Poincare invariants (P^+_V,P^-_V): H^2(V,Z) --> \Lambda^* H^1(V,Z) x \Lambda^* H^1(V,Z). These maps are invariant under deformations, satisfy a blow-up formula, and a wall crossing formula for surfaces with $p_g(V)=0$. We determine the invariants completely for ruled surfaces, and rederive from this classical results of Nagata and Lange. The invariant $(P^+_V,P^-_V)$ of an elliptic fibration is computed in terms of its multiple fibers. We conjecture that our Poincare invariants coincide with the full Seiberg-Witten invariants of Okonek-Teleman computed with respect to the canonical orientation data. The main evidence for this conjecture is based on the existence of an Kobayashi-Hitchin isomorphism which identifies the moduli spaces of monopoles with the corresponding Hilbert schemes. We expect that this isomorphism identifies also the corresponding virtual fundamental classes. This more conceptual conjecture is true in the smooth case., Comment: 72 pages

In [DKO] we constructed virtual fundamental classes $[[ Hilb^m_V ]]$ for Hilbert schemes of divisors of topological type m on a surface V, and used these classes to define the Poincare invariant of V: (P^+_V,P^-_V): H^2(V,Z) --> \Lambda^* H^1(V,Z) x \Lambda^* H^1(V,Z) We conjecture that this invariant coincides with the full Seiberg-Witten invariant computed with respect to the canonical orientation data. In this note we prove that the existence of an integral curve $C \subset V$ induces relations between some of these virtual fundamental classes $[[Hilb^m_V ]]$. Abstract

The reaction dynamics of methanol and water on Si(001) were investigated by means of molecular beam techniques. The initial sticking probability s0 was determined as a function of the kinetic energy of the incoming molecules, Ekin, and surface temperature, Ts. For both, methanol and water, a nonactivated reactional channel was observed; the dynamics were found to be determined by the reaction into the datively bonded intermediate state. A low conversion barrier was deduced for the conversion from this intermediate into the final state. It is attributed to the reaction mechanism, which proceeds via proton transfer from the OH-group of the datively bonded molecules to a Si surface atom. Despite this low conversion barrier, adsorption into the intermediate and further reaction via proton transfer were found to be largely decoupled. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The desorption of surface-adsorbed molecules induced by cluster-surface collisions of neutral molecular clusters, in particular, SO2 clusters, was investigated by means of molecular dynamics simulations. The desorption efficiency was found to be in general much higher for clusters of polar molecules when compared to nonpolar cluster constituents, for both nonpolar and polar adsorbates. In all cases, desorption is shown to proceed via dissolvation of the analyte in the cluster. In systems with nonpolar cluster constituents, the process is mainly driven by the increase in the entropy of the dissolved analyte in a larger cluster fragment. The latter process is enhanced by polar cluster constituents since the respective clusters show lower fragmentation at comparable kinetic energy and thus provide in average larger cluster fragments for the analytes to be dissolved in. In systems with clusters of polar constituents and polar adsorbates, the process is most efficient due to the additional energetic stabilization of the desorbed molecule in the solvation shell formed in the cluster fragment.
