Wir beobachteten eine effiziente Induktion von Chiralität in dünnen Polyfluoren‐Copolymer‐Dünnschichten durch Mischen mit chiralen Additiven vom Helicen‐Typ basierend auf dem Dibenzo[c,h]acridin‐Motiv. Bilder, die mittels Circulardichroismus (CD)‐ und zirkular polarisierter Lumineszenz (CPL)‐Mikroskopie erhalten wurden, liefern Informationen zu den chiralen Anordnungen in den dünnen Schichten mit beugungsbegrenzter Auflösung. Das CD‐Signal zeigt eine charakteristische Abhängigkeit von der Filmdicke, was für einen supramolekularen Ursprung der starken chiralen Antwort des Copolymers spricht. Insbesondere demonstrieren wir die Unterscheidung zwischen Filmen mit entgegengesetzter Chiralität auf Basis ihrer ultraschnellen transienten chiralen Antwort mit Hilfe von Femtosekunden‐Breitband‐CD‐Spektroskopie und einem neu entwickelten Aufbau für die transiente CPL‐Spektroskopie mit 28 ps Zeitauflösung. Eine systematische Variation des Enantiomeren‐Überschusses des chiralen Additivs zeigt, dass das "Feldwebel und Soldaten"‐Konzept und die "Mehrheitsregeln" nicht eingehalten werden. Der Grad der Porenfüllung definiert die Gast@MOF‐Eigenschaften in Anwendungen wie Elektronik, Optik und Gastrennung. Das Zusammenspiel von Schlüsselaspekten der Wirt‐Gast‐Wechselwirkungen, wie eine quantitative Beschreibung der Gastausrichtung oder die strukturelle Integrität des Wirts als Funktion der Porenfüllung, muss jedoch noch bestimmt werden. Polarisationsabhängige Infrarotspektroskopie in abgeschwächter Totalreflexionskonfiguration in Kombination mit Gassorption ermöglichten es, gleichzeitig die Orientierung des Gastmoleküls und strukturelle Änderungen des MOF‐Gerüsts während des Porenfüllprozesses zu untersuchen. Dabei stellten wir fest, dass sich zunächst zufällig orientierte Gastmoleküle mit zunehmender Porenfüllung während der Adsorption aus der Gasphase ausrichten. Gleichzeitig erfährt das Gerüst selbst eine reversible, vom Gastmolekül abhängige Rotation des aromatischen Liganden und einen Prozess der Ligandenablösung, wodurch Defekte induziert werden. Das Interesse an Metallierungs‐ und Selbstmetallierungsreaktionen auf Oxidoberflächen ist in jüngster Zeit ständig gewachsen. Der Mechanismus der Selbstmetallierungsreaktion ist jedoch nicht vollständig geklärt. Hier zeigen wir mithilfe von Rastertunnelmikroskopie, Photoemissions‐Spektroskopie und Dichtefunktionaltheorie‐Rechnungen, dass die Selbstmetallierung von 2H‐Tetraphenylporphyrin auf der Oberfläche von ultradünnen MgO(001)‐Filmen durch Ladungstransfer ermöglicht wird. Es wird gezeigt, dass der Ladungszustand und dadurch der Metallierungszustand der Porphyrin‐Moleküle durch die Austrittsarbeit des MgO(001)/Ag(001)‐Substrats gezielt eingestellt werden können. Establishing structure–reactivity relationships for specific channel orientations of zeolites is vital to developing new, superior materials for various applications, including oil and gas conversion processes. Herein, a well‐defined model system was developed to build structure–reactivity relationships for specific zeolite‐channel orientations during various catalytic reaction processes, for example, the methanol‐ and ethanol‐to‐hydrocarbons (MTH and ETH) process as well as oligomerization reactions. The entrapped and effluent hydrocarbons from single‐oriented zeolite ZSM‐5 channels during the MTH process were monitored by using operando UV/Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and on‐line mass spectrometry (MS), respectively. The results reveal that the straight channels favor the formation of internal coke, promoting the aromatic cycle. Furthermore, the sinusoidal channels produce aromatics, (e.g., toluene) that further grow into larger polyaromatics (e.g., graphitic coke) leading to deactivation of the zeolites. This underscores the importance of careful engineering of materials to suppress coke formation and tune product distribution by rational control of the location of zeolite acid sites and crystallographic orientations. Functional coatings are of considerable interest because of their fundamental implications for interfacial assembly and promise for numerous applications. Universally adherent materials have recently emerged as versatile functional coatings; however, such coatings are generally limited to catechol, (ortho‐diphenol)‐containing molecules, as building blocks. Here, we report a facile, biofriendly enzyme‐mediated strategy for assembling a wide range of molecules (e.g. 14 representative molecules in this study) that do not natively have catechol moieties, including small molecules, peptides, and proteins, on various surfaces, while preserving the molecule's inherent function, such as catalysis (≈80 % retention of enzymatic activity for trypsin). Assembly is achieved by in situ conversion of monophenols into catechols via tyrosinase, where films form on surfaces via covalent and coordination cross‐linking. The resulting coatings are robust, functional (e.g. in protective coatings, biological imaging, and enzymatic catalysis), and versatile for diverse secondary surface‐confined reactions (e.g. biomineralization, metal ion chelation, and N‐hydroxysuccinimide conjugation). The interaction of hydrogen with reduced ceria (CeO2−x) powders and CeO2−x(111) thin films was studied using several characterization techniques including TEM, XRD, LEED, XPS, RPES, EELS, ESR, and TDS. The results clearly indicate that both in reduced ceria powders as well as in reduced single crystal ceria films hydrogen may form hydroxyls at the surface and hydride species below the surface. The formation of hydrides is clearly linked to the presence of oxygen vacancies and is accompanied by the transfer of an electron from a Ce3+ species to hydrogen, which results in the formation of Ce4+, and thus in oxidation of ceria. The tunable growth of metal–organic materials has implications for engineering particles and surfaces for diverse applications. Specifically, controlling the self‐assembly of metal–phenolic networks (MPNs), an emerging class of metal–organic materials, is challenging, as previous studies suggest that growth often terminates through kinetic trapping. Herein, kinetic strategies were used to temporally and spatially control MPN growth by promoting self‐correction of the coordinating building blocks through oxidation‐mediated MPN assembly. The formation and growth mechanisms were investigated and used to engineer films with microporous structures and continuous gradients. Moreover, reactive oxygen species generated by ultrasonication expedite oxidation and result in faster (ca. 30 times) film growth than that achieved by other MPN assembly methods. A new two‐dimensional (2D) germanium dioxide film has been prepared. The film consists of interconnected germania tetrahedral units forming a bilayer structure, weakly coupled to the supporting Pt(111) metal‐substrate. Density functional theory calculations predict a stable structure of 558‐membered rings for germania films, while for silica films 6‐membered rings are preferred. By varying the preparation conditions the degree of order in the germania films is tuned. Black phosphorus (BP) has been gathering great attention for its electronic and optoelectronic applications due to its high electron mobility and high ION/OFF current switching ratio. The limitations of this material include its low synthetic yield and high cost. One alternative to BP is another type of phosphorus allotrope, red phosphorus (RP), which is much more affordable and easier to process. Although RP has been widely used in industry for hundreds of years and considered as an insulating material, in this study, we demonstrate through field‐effect transistors (FET) measurements that amorphous red phosphorus (a‐RP) films are semiconductive with a high mobility of 387 cm2 V−1 s−1 and a current switching ratio of ≈103, which is comparable to the electronic characteristics previously reported for BP. The films were produced via a thermal evaporation method or a facile drop‐casting approach onto Si/SiO2 substrates. We also report a study of the oxidation process of the films over time and a method to stabilize the films via doping a‐RP with metal oxides. Tin‐based halide perovskite materials have been successfully employed in lead‐free perovskite solar cells, but the overall power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) have been limited by the high carrier concentration from the facile oxidation of Sn2+ to Sn4+. Now a chemical route is developed for fabrication of high‐quality methylammonium tin iodide perovskite (MASnI3) films: hydrazinium tin iodide (HASnI3) perovskite film is first solution‐deposited using presursors hydrazinium iodide (HAI) and tin iodide (SnI2), and then transformed into MASnI3 via a cation displacement approach. With the two‐step process, a dense and uniform MASnI3 film is obtained with large grain sizes and high crystallization. Detrimental oxidation is suppressed by the hydrazine released from the film during the transformation. With the MASnI3 as light harvester, mesoporous perovskite solar cells were prepared, and a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.13 % is delivered with good reproducibility. The development of safe lithium‐metal anodes is crucial for the next‐generation rechargeable batteries. To stabilize Li metal anodes, pre‐planting Li nucleation seeds on lithiophilic substrates is an efficient strategy to regulate initial nucleation process of Li metal. Now, activated ultrathin layered double hydroxide (U‐LDHs) are reported as a promising lithiophilic 2D material to realize the uniform deposition of Li metal. The experimental studies and DFT calculations reveal that the active oxygen on U‐LDHs provides abundant atomic‐scale active sites for Li homogeneous nucleation and plating. Moreover, the lithiophilic properties of active oxygen is also related to its coordination environments. Oxidative polymerization of nickel(II) 5,15‐diphenyl porphyrin and nickel(II) 5,15‐bis(di‐3,5‐tert‐butylphenyl) porphyrin by oxidative chemical vapor deposition (oCVD) yields multiply fused porphyrin oligomers in thin film form. The oCVD technique enables one‐step formation, deposition, and p‐doping of conjugated poly(porphyrins) coatings without solvents or post‐treatments. The decisive reactions and side reactions during the oCVD process are shown by high‐resolution mass spectrometry. Owing to the highly conjugated structure of the fused tapes, the thin films exhibit an electrical conductivity of 3.6×10−2 S cm−1 and strong absorption in the visible to near‐infrared spectral region. The formation of smooth conjugated poly(porphyrins) coatings, even on sensitive substrates, is demonstrated by deposition and patterning on glass, silicon, and paper. Processing metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as films with controllable thickness on a substrate is increasingly crucial for many applications to realize function integration and performance optimization. Herein, we report a facile cathodic deposition process that enables the large‐area preparation of uniform films of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF‐8, ZIF‐71, and ZIF‐67) with highly tunable thickness ranging from approximately 24 nm to hundreds of nanometers. Importantly, this oxygen‐reduction‐triggered cathodic deposition does not lead to the plating of reduced metals (Zn and Co). It is also operable cost‐effectively in the absence of supporting electrolyte and facilitates the construction of well‐defined sub‐micrometer‐sized heterogeneous structures within ZIF films. Rhenium is both a refractory metal and a noble metal that has attractive properties for various applications. Still, synthesis and applications of rhenium thin films have been limited. We introduce herein the growth of both rhenium metal and rhenium nitride thin films by the technologically important atomic layer deposition (ALD) method over a wide deposition temperature range using fast, simple, and robust surface reactions between rhenium pentachloride and ammonia. Films are grown and characterized for compositions, surface morphologies and roughnesses, crystallinities, and resistivities. Conductive rhenium subnitride films of tunable composition are obtained at deposition temperatures between 275 and 375 °C, whereas pure rhenium metal films grow at 400 °C and above. Even a just 3 nm thick rhenium film is continuous and has a low resistivity of about 90 μΩ cm showing potential for applications for which also other noble metals and refractory metals have been considered. Abstract: We demonstrate the mediation of charge transport and release in thin films and devices by shifting the redox properties of layers of metal complexes by light. The nanoscale surface arrangement of both photo‐ and electrochemically‐active components is essential for the function of the thin films. Layers of well‐defined ruthenium complexes on indium‐tin‐oxide electrodes provide electron‐transport channels that allow the electrochemical addressing of layers of isostructural cobalt complexes. These cobalt complexes are electrochemically inactive when assembled directly on transparent metal‐oxide electrodes. The interlayer of ruthenium complexes on such electrodes allows irreversible oxidation of the cobalt complexes. However, shifting the redox properties of the ruthenium complexes by excitation with light opens up an electron‐transport channel to reduce the cobalt complexes; hence releasing the trapped positive charges. Abstract: Producing zeolite films with controlled preferred orientation on an industrial scale is a long‐standing challenge. Herein we report on a scalable approach to the direct wet deposition of zeolite thin films and membranes while maintaining a high degree of control over the preferred crystal orientation. As a proof of concept, thin films comprising aluminophosphate zeolite AEI were cast on silicon wafer or porous alumina substrates. All the processes are demonstrated to follow ideal self‐limiting ALD growth behavior to produce fairly pure, smooth, well‐crystallized, stoichiometric pyrite FeS2, CoS2, and NiS2 films. By these processes, the FeS2, CoS2, and NiS2 films can also be uniformly and conformally deposited into deep narrow trenches with aspect ratios as high as 10:1, which thereby highlights the broad and promising applicability of these ALD processes for conformal film coatings on complex high‐aspect‐ratio 3D architectures in general. Abstract: A new class of fused heterocyclic tridentate ligand‐containing alkynylgold(III) complexes with tunable emission color has been successfully designed and synthesized. Structural modification of the σ‐donating fused heterocyclic alkynyl ligands, including substituted fluorene, carbazole, and triphenylamine, enables a large spectral shift of about 110 nm (ca. 3310 cm−1) that covers the green to red region to be realized with the same tridentate ligand‐containing alkynylgold(III) complexes in solid‐state thin films. Interestingly, the energy of the excimeric emission can be controlled by the rational design of the fused heterocyclic alkynyl ligands. Superior solution‐processable organic light‐emitting devices (OLEDs) with high external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of 12.2, 13.5, 9.3, and 5.2 % were obtained with green, yellow, orange, and red emission. These high EQE values are comparable to those of the vacuum‐deposited OLEDs based on structurally related alkynylgold(III) complexes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is a promising method for storing solar energy in the form of hydrogen fuel, but it is greatly hindered by the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, a facile solution impregnation method is developed for growing ultrathin (2 nm) highly crystalline β‐FeOOH nanolayers with abundant oxygen vacancies on BiVO4 photoanodes. These exhibited a remarkable photocurrent density of 4.3 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), AM 1.5 G), which is approximately two times higher than that of amorphous FeOOH fabricated by electrodeposition. Systematic studies reveal that the excellent PEC activity should be attributed to their ultrathin crystalline structure and abundant oxygen vacancies, which could effectively facilitate the hole transport/trapping and provide more active sites for water oxidation. Abstract: Shape‐memory polymers (SMPs) are an intriguing class of smart materials possessing reversible shape change and recovery capabilities. Effective routes to shape‐memory porous films (SMPFs) are few and limited in scope owing to the difficulty in manipulating the shape change of pores by conventional methods. Herein we report an unconventional strategy for crafting light‐driven SMPFs by judiciously constructing highly ordered porous films via a facile “breath figure” approach, followed by sequential vapor crosslinking and nondestructive directional light manipulation. Micropores can thus be transformed into other shapes including rectangle, rhombus and size‐reduced micropores at room temperature. The transformed micropores can be reverted to their original shapes by either thermal annealing or UV irradiation. As such, this strategy expands the rich diversity of SMPs accessible. Abstract: Ultrathin (monolayer) films of transition metal oxides grown on metal substrates have recently received considerable attention as promising catalytic materials, in particular for low‐temperature CO oxidation. The reaction rate on such systems often increases when the film only partially covers the support, and the effect is commonly attributed to the formation of active sites at the metal/oxide boundary. By studying the structure and reactivity of FeO(111) films on Pt(111), it is shown that, independent of the film coverage, CO oxidation takes place at the interface between reduced and oxidized phases in the oxide film formed under reaction conditions. The promotional role of a metal support is to ease formation of the reduced phase by reaction between CO adsorbed on metal and oxygen at the oxide island edge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Narrow band gaps and excellent ferroelectricity are intrinsically paradoxical in ferroelectrics as the leakage current caused by an increase in the number of thermally excited carriers will lead to a deterioration of ferroelectricity. A new molecular ferroelectric, hexane-1,6-diammonium pentaiodobismuth (HDA-BiI5), was now developed through band gap engineering of organic-inorganic hybrid materials. It features an intrinsic band gap of 1.89 eV, and thus represents the first molecular ferroelectric with a band gap of less than 2.0 eV. Simultaneously, low-temperature solution processing was successfully applied to fabricate high-quality ferroelectric thin films based on HDA-BiI5, for which high-precision controllable domain flips were realized. Owing to its narrow band gap and excellent ferroelectricity, HDA-BiI5 can be considered as a milestone in the exploitation of molecular ferroelectrics, with promising applications in high-density data storage and photovoltaic conversion. While zeolitic imidazolate framework, ZIF-8, membranes show impressive propylene/propane separation, their throughput needs to be greatly improved for practical applications. A method is described that drastically reduces the effective thickness of ZIF-8 membranes, thereby substantially improving their propylene permeance (that is, flux). The new strategy is based on a controlled single-crystal to single-crystal linker exchange of 2-methylimidazole in ZIF-8 membrane grains with 2-imidazolecarboxaldehyde (ZIF-90 linker), thereby enlarging the effective aperture size of ZIF-8. The linker-exchanged ZIF-8 membranes showed a drastic increase in propylene permeance by about four times, with a negligible loss in propylene/propane separation factor when compared to as-prepared membranes. The utility of electronically conductive metal-organic frameworks (EC-MOFs) in high-performance devices has been limited to date by a lack of high-quality thin film. The controllable thin-film fabrication of an EC-MOF, Cu3(HHTP)2, (HHTP=2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene), by a spray layer-by-layer liquid-phase epitaxial method is reported. The Cu3(HHTP)2 thin film can not only be precisely prepared with thickness increment of about 2 nm per growing cycle, but also shows a smooth surface, good crystallinity, and high orientation. The chemiresistor gas sensor based on this high-quality thin film is one of the best room-temperature sensors for NH3 among all reported sensors based on various materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two efficient blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence compounds, B-oCz and B-oTC, composed of ortho-donor (D)-acceptor (A) arrangement were designed and synthesized. The significant intramolecular D-A interactions induce a combined charge transfer pathway and thus achieve small Δ EST and high efficiencies. The concentration quenching can be effectively inhibited in films of these compounds. Herein a convenient synthetic method to obtain 2,2,3,3-tetrasilyltetrasilane 3 and 2,2,3,3,4,4-hexasilylpentasilane 4 on a multigram scale is presented. Proton-coupled 29Si NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray crystallography enabled unequivocal structural assignment. Owing to their unique properties, which are reflected in their nonpyrophoric character on contact with air and their enhanced light absorption above 250 nm, 3 and 4 are valuable precursors for liquid-phase deposition (LPD) and the processing of thin silicon films. Amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) films of excellent quality were deposited starting from 3 and characterized by conductivity measurements, ellipsometry, optical microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Highly b-oriented zeolite ZSM-5 films are critical for applications in catalysis and separations and may serve as models to study diffusion and catalytic properties in single zeolite channels. However, the introduction of catalytically active Al3+ usually disrupts the orientation of zeolite films. Herein, using structure-directing agents with hydroxy groups, we demonstrate a new method to prepare highly b-oriented zeolite ZSM-5 films with a broad range of Si/Al ratios (Si/Al=45 to ∞). Fluorescence micro-(spectro)scopy was used to monitor misoriented microstructures, which are invisible to X-ray diffraction, and show Al3+ framework incorporation and illustrate the differences between misoriented and b-oriented films. The methanol-to-hydrocarbons process was studied by operando UV/Vis diffuse reflectance micro-spectroscopy with on-line mass spectrometry, showing that the b-oriented zeolite ZSM-5 films are active and stable under realistic process conditions. Thin film formats are used to study the Claisen–Schmidt base-catalyzed condensation of 6-hydroxy-1-indanone with substituted benzaldehydes and to compare the reaction acceleration relative to the bulk. Relative acceleration factors initially exceeded 103 and were on the order of 102 at steady state, although the confined volume reaction was not electrostatically driven. Substituent effects were muted compared to those in the corresponding bulk and microdroplet reactions and it is concluded that the rate-limiting step at steady state is reagent transport to the interface. Conditions were found that allowed product deposition from the thin film to occur continuously as the reaction mixture was added and as the solvent evaporated. Yields of 74 % and production rates of 98 mg h−1 were reached in a very simple experimental system that could be multiplexed to greater scales. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The design of efficient noncentrosymmetric materials remains the ultimate goal in the field of organic second-order nonlinear optics. Unlike inorganic crystals currently used in second-order nonlinear optical applications, organic materials are an attractive alternative owing to their fast electro-optical response and processability, but their alignment into noncentrosymmetric film remains challenging. Here, symmetry breaking by judicious functionalization of 3D organic octupoles allows the emergence of multifunctional liquid crystalline chromophores which can easily be processed into large, flexible, thin, and self-oriented films with second harmonic generation responses competitive to the prototypical inorganic KH2PO4 crystals. The liquid-crystalline nature of these chiral organic films also permits the modulation of the nonlinear optical properties owing to the sensitivity of the supramolecular organization to temperature, leading to the development of tunable macroscopic materials. Harvesting the properties of nanosheets is not only crucial from a fundamental perspective, but also for the development of novel functional devices based on 2D nanosheets. Herein, we demonstrate the processing of organically modified TBA xH1− xCa2Nb3O10 nanosheets into photonic thin films and study their colorimetric sensing properties in response to various aqueous and organic solvent vapors. Building on the enhanced solvent accessibility of TBA-containing nanosheets and their photocatalytic activity under UV irradiation, we develop a new concept for photocatalytic lithography using TBA xH1− xCa2Nb3O10 nanosheets as a negative photoresist to obtain high-fidelity micron-scale patterns of robust inorganic nanosheets. We report on a bistable MEMS device actuated by spin-crossover molecules. The device consists of a freestanding silicon microcantilever with an integrated piezoresistive detection system, which was coated with a 140 nm thick film of the [Fe(HB(tz)3)2] (tz=1,2,4-triazol-1-yl) molecular spin-crossover complex. Switching from the low-spin to the high-spin state of the ferrous ions at 338 K led to a reversible upward bending of the cantilever in agreement with the change in the lattice parameters of the complex. The strong mechanical coupling was also evidenced by the decrease of approximately 66 Hz in the resonance frequency in the high-spin state as well as by the drop in the quality factor around the spin transition. Lithiation/delithiation induces significant stresses and strains into the electrodes for lithium ion batteries, which can severely degrade their cycling performance. Moreover, this electrochemically induced strain can interact with the local strain existing at solid-solid interfaces. It is not clear how this interaction affects the lithiation mechanism. The effect of this coupling on the lithiation kinetics in epitaxial Fe3O4 thin film on a Nb-doped SrTiO3 substrate is investigated. In situ and ex situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results show that the lithiation is suppressed by the compressive interfacial strain. At the interface between the film and substrate, the existence of Li xFe3O4 rock-salt phase during lithiation consequently restrains the film from delamination. 2D phase-field simulation verifies the effect of strain. Methylammonium-mediated phase-evolution behavior of FA1−xMAxPbI3 mixed-organic-cation perovskite (MOCP) is studied. It is found that by simply enriching the MOCP precursor solutions with excess methylammonium cations, the MOCPs form via a dynamic composition-tuning process that is key to obtaining MOCP thin films with superior properties. This simple chemical approach addresses several key challenges, such as control over phase purity, uniformity, grain size, composition, etc., associated with the solution-growth of MOCP thin films with targeted compositions. An unexpected morphology comprising patchy nanofibers can be accessed from the self-assembly of an all-conjugated, polyselenophene- block-polythiophene copolymer. This morphology consists of very small (<10 nm), polythiophene- and polyselenophene-rich domains and is unprecedented for both conjugated polymers and diblock copolymers in general. We propose that the patchy morphology occurs from the enhanced miscibility of the blocks arising from the longer alkyl chains in comparison to similar block copolymers with shorter alkyl chains, which fully phase separate, as well as the difference in rigidity between the polythiophene and polyselenophene blocks. The atomic layer deposition (ALD) of iron sulfide (FeS x) is reported for the first time. The deposition process employs bis( N, N′-di-tert-butylacetamidinato)iron(II) and H2S as the reactants and produces fairly pure, smooth, and well-crystallized FeSx thin films following an ideal self-limiting ALD growth behavior. The FeSx films can be uniformly and conformally deposited into deep narrow trenches with aspect ratios as high as 10:1, which highlights the broad applicability of this ALD process for engineering the surface of complex 3D nanostructures in general. Highly uniform nanoscale FeSx coatings on porous γ-Al2O3 powder were also prepared. This compound shows excellent catalytic activity and selectivity in the hydrogenation of azo compounds under mild reaction conditions, demonstrating the promise of ALD FeS x as a catalyst for organic reactions. Nature applies enzymatic assembly lines to synthesize bioactive compounds. Inspired by such capabilities, we have developed a facile method for spatially segregating attached enzymes in a continuous-flow, vortex fluidic device (VFD). Fused Hisn-tags at the protein termini allow rapid bioconjugation and consequent purification through complexation with immobilized metal affinity chromatography (IMAC) resin. Six proteins were purified from complex cell lysates to average homogeneities of 76 %. The most challenging to purify, tobacco epi-aristolochene synthase, was purified in only ten minutes from cell lysate to near homogeneity (>90 %). Furthermore, this 'reaction-ready' system demonstrated excellent stability during five days of continuous-flow processing. Towards multi-step transformations in continuous flow, proteins were arrayed as ordered zones on the reactor surface allowing segregation of catalysts. Freestanding MOF films up to six-inches across and replicating various surface (micro)patterns are prepared via a templated growth method. When grown on copper supports, these films have preferred orientation of the constituent crystallites, translating into markedly different wetting properties of the film's two surfaces (water-pinning vs. water repellant). The cyclic polymer topology strongly alters the interfacial, physico-chemical properties of polymer brushes, when compared to the linear counterparts. In this study, we especially concentrated on poly-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline (PEOXA) cyclic and linear grafts assembled on titanium oxide surfaces by the 'grafting-to' technique. The smaller hydrodynamic radius of ring PEOXAs favors the formation of denser brushes with respect to linear analogs. Denser and more compact cyclic brushes generate a steric barrier that surpasses the typical entropic shield by a linear brush. This phenomenon, translates into an improved resistance towards biological contamination from different protein mixtures. Moreover, the enhancement of steric stabilization coupled to the intrinsic absence of chain ends by cyclic brushes, produce surfaces displaying a super-lubricating character when they are sheared against each other. All these topological effects pave the way for the application of cyclic brushes for surface functionalization, enabling the modulation of physico-chemical properties that could be just marginally tuned by applying linear grafts. Methylamine-induced thin-film transformation at room-temperature is discovered, where a porous, rough, polycrystalline NH4PbI3 non-perovskite thin film converts stepwise into a dense, ultrasmooth, textured CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite thin film. Owing to the beneficial phase/structural development of the thin film, its photovoltaic properties undergo dramatic enhancement during this NH4PbI3-to-CH3NH3PbI3 transformation process. High-density polymer brushes on substrates exhibit unique properties and functions stemming from the extended conformations due to the surface constraint. To date, such chain organizations have been mostly attained by synthetic strategies of surface-initiated living polymerization. We show herein a new method to prepare a high-density polymer brush architecture using surface segregation and self-assembly of diblock copolymers containing a side-chain liquid-crystalline polymer (SCLCP). The surface segregation is attained from a film of an amorphous base polymer (polystyrene, PS) containing a minor amount of a SCLCP-PS diblock copolymer upon annealing above the glass-transition temperature. The threat associated with chemical warfare agents (CWAs) motivates the development of new materials to provide enhanced protection with a reduced burden. Metal-organic frame-works (MOFs) have recently been shown as highly effective catalysts for detoxifying CWAs, but challenges still remain for integrating MOFs into functional filter media and/or protective garments. Herein, we report a series of MOF-nanofiber kebab structures for fast degradation of CWAs. We found TiO2 coatings deposited via atomic layer deposition (ALD) onto polyamide-6 nanofibers enable the formation of conformal Zr-based MOF thin films including UiO-66, UiO-66-NH2, and UiO-67. Cross-sectional TEM images show that these MOF crystals nucleate and grow directly on and around the nanofibers, with strong attachment to the substrates. These MOF-functionalized nanofibers exhibit excellent reactivity for detoxifying CWAs. The half-lives of a CWA simulant compound and nerve agent soman (GD) are as short as 7.3 min and 2.3 min, respectively. A novel class of nonclassical structures of mesoporous silica, namely a binary nanoparticle mesoporous superlattice (BNMS), is obtained by the assembly of silica nanospheres of different sizes into a binary colloidal crystal. The colloidal crystal has a CrB-type structure and consists of alternate stacks of unary fcc and binary AlB2-type structures along the b axis and has four types of interstitial mesopores. We have prepared two new CaII amidinates, which comprise a new class of ALD precursors. The syntheses proceed by a direct reaction between Ca metal and the amidine ligands in the presence of ammonia. Bis(N,N′-diisopropylformamidinato)calcium(II) ( 1) and bis(N,N′-diisopropylacetamidinato)calcium(II) ( 2) adopt dimeric structures in solution and in the solid state. X-ray crystallography revealed asymmetry in one of the bridging ligands to afford the structure [(η2-L)Ca(μ-η2:η2-L)(μ-η2:η1-L)Ca(η2-L)]. These amidinate complexes showed unprecedentedly high volatility as compared to the widely employed and commercially available CaII precursor, [Ca3(tmhd)6]. In CaS ALD with 1 and H2S, the ALD window was approximately two times wider and lower in temperature by about 150 °C than previously reported with [Ca3(tmhd)6] and H2S. Complexes 1 and 2, with their excellent volatility and thermal stability (up to at least 350 °C), are the first homoleptic CaII amidinates suitable for use as ALD precursors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bismuth-based hybrid perovskites are candidates for lead-free and air-stable photovoltaics, but poor surface morphologies and a high band-gap energy have previously limited these hybrid perovskites. A new materials processing strategy to produce enhanced bismuth-based thin-film photovoltaic absorbers by incorporation of monovalent silver cations into iodobismuthates is presented. Solution-processed AgBi2I7 thin films are prepared by spin-coating silver and bismuth precursors dissolved in n-butylamine and annealing under an N2 atmosphere. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals the pure cubic structure ( Fd3 m) with lattice parameters of a= b= c=12.223 Å. The resultant AgBi2I7 thin films exhibit dense and pinhole-free surface morphologies with grains ranging in size from 200-800 nm and a low band gap of 1.87 eV suitable for photovoltaic applications. Initial studies produce solar power conversion efficiencies of 1.22 % and excellent stability over at least 10 days under ambient conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Here we report on a simple, generally applicable method for depositing metal nanoparticles on a wide variety of solid surfaces under all aqueous conditions. Noble-metal nanoparticles obtained by citrate reduction followed by coating with thermoresponsive polymers spontaneously form a monolayer-like structure on a wide variety of substrates in presence of sodium chloride whereas this phenomenon does not occur in salt-free medium. Interestingly, this phenomenon occurs below the cloud point temperature of the polymers and we hypothesize that salt ion-induced screening of electrostatic charges on the nanoparticle surface entropically favors hydrophobic association between the polymer-coated nanoparticles and a hydrophobic substrate. Two poly(quinoxaline-2,3-diyl) copolymers bearing miscibility-enhancing 8-chlorooctyloxy and ( S)-2-methylbutoxy or n-butoxy side chains were synthesized. After annealing in CHCl3 vapor, a polymer-blend film of these copolymers exhibited selective reflection of right-handed circularly polarized light (CPL) in the visible region. The handedness of the CPL reflected was completely inverted upon annealing of the film in THF vapor. Annealing in n-hexane vapor resulted in the phase separation of the polymer blend, which turned the selective reflection off. This three-way-switchable reflection, that is, reflection of right-handed or left-handed CPL, together with an OFF state, could be observed visually through right- and left-handed CPL filters. Nanomaterials have been widely used for applications in biomedical fields and could become indispensable in the near future. However, since it is difficult to optimize in vivo biological behavior in a 3D environment by using a single cell in vitro, there have been many failures in animal models. In vitro prediction systems using 3D human-tissue models reflecting the 3D location of cell types may be useful to better understand the biological characteristics of nanomaterials for optimization of their function. Herein we demonstrate the potential ability of 3D engineered human-arterial models for in vitro prediction of the in vivo behavior of nanoparticles for drug delivery. These models enabled optimization of the composition and size of the nanoparticles for targeting and treatment efficacy for atherosclerosis. Liquid spreading is of significant interest in science and technology. Although surface topography engineering and liquid surface-tension regulating can facilitate spreading, the spreading layers in these strategies are inevitably inhomogeneous or contaminated with surfactants. Herein, we show a general strategy to realize the superspreading of liquids on mutually soluble gel surfaces. The cooperation of the hydraulic pressure under liquid phase and liquid-like property of gel surfaces can dramatically eliminate the local pinning effect and enhance the advancement of three-phase contact line, thus forming stable and homogeneous superspreading liquid layers. Such liquid layers can be converted into various functional thin polymer films with controlled thicknesses (nm- to µm-scale) through one-step polymerization of the reactants.
