Similar to the optical diffraction of light passing through a material grating, the Kapitza-Dirac effect occurs when an electron is diffracted by a standing light wave. In its original description the effect is time-independent. In the present work, we extend the Kapitza-Dirac concept to the time domain. By tracking the spatiotemporal evolution of a pulsed electron wave packet diffracted by a femtosecond (10 15 second) standing wave pulse in a pump-probe scheme, we observe so far unseen time-dependent diffraction patterns. The fringe spacing in the observed pattern differs from that generated by the conventional Kapitza-Dirac effect, moreover it decreases as the pump-probe delay time increases. By exploiting this time-resolved diffraction scheme, we gather access to the time evolution of the previously inaccessible phase properties of a free electron.

Monochromatic gamma-ray signals constitute a potential smoking gun signature for annihilating or decaying dark matter particles that could relatively easily be distinguished from astrophysical or instrumental backgrounds. We provide an updated assessment of the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to such signals, based on observations of the Galactic centre region as well as of selected dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We find that current limits and detection prospects for dark matter masses above 300 GeV will be significantly improved, by up to an order of magnitude in the multi-TeV range. This demonstrates that CTA will set a new standard for gamma-ray astronomy also in this respect, as the world's largest and most sensitive high-energy gamma-ray observatory, in particular due to its exquisite energy resolution at TeV energies and the adopted observational strategy focussing on regions with large dark matter densities. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date instrument response functions, and we thoroughly model the effect of instrumental systematic uncertainties in our statistical treatment. We report on strong field ionization of S- and R-propylene oxide in circularly polarized two-color laser fields. We find that the relative helicity of the two single color laser fields affects the photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD). Further, we observe that PECD is modulated as a function of the sub-cycle release time of the electron. Our experimental observations are successfully described by a heuristic model based on electrons in chiral initial states, which are selectively liberated by the laser field and, after tunneling, interact with an achiral Coulomb potential.

The challenging propagation environment, combined with the hardware limitations of mmWave systems, gives rise to the need for accurate initial access beam alignment strategies with low latency and high achievable beamforming gain. Much of the recent work in this area either focuses on one-sided beam alignment, or, joint beam alignment methods where both sides of the link perform a sequence of fixed channel probing steps. Codebook-based non-adaptive beam alignment schemes have the potential to allow multiple user equipment (UE) to perform initial access beam alignment in parallel whereas adaptive schemes are favourable in achievable beamforming gain. This work introduces a novel deep learning based joint beam alignment scheme that aims to combine the benefits of adaptive, codebook-free beam alignment at the UE side with the advantages of a codebook-sweep based scheme at the base station. The proposed end-to-end trainable scheme is compatible with current cellular standard signaling and can be readily integrated into the standard without requiring significant changes to it. Extensive simulations demonstrate superior performance of the proposed approach over purely codebook-based ones.

The very high energy (VHE) emission of the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) is rarely modelled in 3D. Most approaches describe the morphology in 1D or simplify the diffusion to the isotropic case. In this work we show the impact of a realistic 3D magnetic field configuration and gas distribution on the VHE gamma-ray distribution of the CMZ. We solve the 3D cosmic-ray transport equation with an anisotropic diffusion tensor using the approach of stochastic differential equations as implemented in the CRPropa framework. We test two different source distributions for five different anisotropies of the diffusion tensor, covering the range of effectively fieldline-parallel diffusion to isotropic diffusion. Within the tested magnetic field configuration the anisotropy of the diffusion tensor is close to the isotropic case and three point sources within the CMZ are favoured. Future missions like the upcoming CTA will reveal more small-scale structures which are not jet included in the model. Therefor a more detailed 3D gas distribution and magnetic field structure will be needed.

Free-electron lasers (FELs) are the world's most brilliant light sources with rapidly evolving technological capabilities in terms of ultrabright and ultrashort pulses over a large range of accessible photon energies. Their revolutionary and innovative developments have opened new fields of science regarding nonlinear light-matter interaction, the investigation of ultrafast processes from specific observer sites, and approaches to imaging matter with atomic resolution. A core aspect of FEL science is the study of isolated and prototypical systems in the gas phase with the possibility of addressing well-defined electronic transitions or particular atomic sites in molecules. Notably for polarization-controlled short-wavelength FELs, the gas phase offers new avenues for investigations of nonlinear and ultrafast phenomena in spin orientated systems, for decoding the function of the chiral building blocks of life as well as steering reactions and particle emission dynamics in otherwise inaccessible ways. This roadmap comprises descriptions of technological capabilities of facilities worldwide, innovative diagnostics and instrumentation, as well as recent scientific highlights, novel methodology and mathematical modeling. The experimental and theoretical landscape of using polarization controllable FELs for dichroic light-matter interaction in the gas phase will be discussed and comprehensively outlined to stimulate and strengthen global collaborative efforts of all disciplines.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. Galaxy clusters are expected to be dark matter (DM) reservoirs and storage rooms for the cosmic-ray protons (CRp) that accumulate along the cluster's formation history. Accordingly, they are excellent targets to search for signals of DM annihilation and decay at gamma-ray energies and are predicted to be sources of large-scale gamma-ray emission due to hadronic interactions in the intracluster medium. We estimate the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to detect diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Perseus galaxy cluster. We perform a detailed spatial and spectral modelling of the expected signal for the DM and the CRp components. For each, we compute the expected CTA sensitivity. The observing strategy of Perseus is also discussed. In the absence of a diffuse signal (non-detection), CTA should constrain the CRp to thermal energy ratio within the radius $R_{500}$ down to about $X_{500}<3\times 10^{-3}$, for a spatial CRp distribution that follows the thermal gas and a CRp spectral index $\alpha_{\rm CRp}=2.3$. Under the optimistic assumption of a pure hadronic origin of the Perseus radio mini-halo and depending on the assumed magnetic field profile, CTA should measure $\alpha_{\rm CRp}$ down to about $\Delta\alpha_{\rm CRp}\simeq 0.1$ and the CRp spatial distribution with 10% precision. Regarding DM, CTA should improve the current ground-based gamma-ray DM limits from clusters observations on the velocity-averaged annihilation cross-section by a factor of up to $\sim 5$, depending on the modelling of DM halo substructure. In the case of decay of DM particles, CTA will explore a new region of the parameter space, reaching models with $\tau_{\chi}>10^{27}$s for DM masses above 1 TeV. These constraints will provide unprecedented sensitivity to the physics of both CRp acceleration and transport at cluster scale and to TeV DM particle models, especially in the decay scenario., Comment: 93 pages (including author list, appendix and references), 143 figures. OaPAC is a recently discovered blue-light-using flavin adenosine dinucleotide (BLUF) photoactivated adenylate cyclase from the cyanobacterium Oscillatoria acuminata that uses adenosine triphosphate and translates the light signal into the production of cyclic adenosine monophosphate. Here, we report crystal structures of the enzyme in the absence of its natural substrate determined from room-temperature serial crystallography data collected at both an X-ray free-electron laser and a synchrotron, and we compare these structures with cryo-macromolecular crystallography structures obtained at a synchrotron by us and others. These results reveal slight differences in the structure of the enzyme due to data collection at different temperatures and X-ray sources. We further investigate the effect of the Y6W mutation in the BLUF domain, a mutation which results in a rearrangement of the hydrogen-bond network around the flavin and a notable rotation of the side chain of the critical Gln48 residue. These studies pave the way for picosecond–millisecond time-resolved serial crystallography experiments at X-ray free-electron lasers and synchrotrons in order to determine the early structural intermediates and correlate them with the well studied picosecond–millisecond spectroscopic intermediates.

Abstract We analysed a large dataset consisting of 457 soil profiles of Andisols and Ultisols of volcanic origin compared to 60 non-volcanic soils. We hypothesised that soil pH has a greater impact on the development of Al-organomineral complexes in volcanic soils compared to non-volcanic soils, in the latter, the silt and clay fractions play a crucial role. Soil pH >4.5 strongly influenced the formation of Al-organomineral complexes in volcanic soils, while an increase in allophane content led to a decrease in SOC. Ultisols with more crystalline clays, such as halloysite and disordered kaolinite, the pH had a weaker impact and there was no effect on non-volcanic soils. Abstract Background While several studies in cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) focus on cognitive function, data on neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) and lifelong mental activities in these patients are scarce. Since NPS are associated with functional impairment, faster cognitive decline and faster progression to death, replication studies in more diverse settings and samples are warranted. Methods We prospectively recruited n = 69 CAA patients and n = 18 cognitively normal controls (NC). The number and severity of NPS were assessed using the Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) Assessment Scale’s (ADAS) noncognitive subscale. We applied different regression models exploring associations between NPS number or severity and group status (CAA vs. NC), CAA severity assessed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or cognitive function (Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), ADAS cognitive subscale), adjusting for age, sex, years of education, arterial hypertension, AD pathology, and apolipoprotein E status. Mediation analyses were performed to test indirect effects of lifelong mental activities on CAA severity and NPS. Results Patients with CAA had 4.86 times (95% CI 2.20-10.73) more NPS and 3.56 units (95% CI 1.94–5.19) higher expected NPS severity than NC. Higher total CAA severity on MRI predicted 1.14 times (95% CI 1.01.-1.27) more NPS and 0.57 units (95% CI 0.19–0.95) higher expected NPS severity. More severe white matter hyperintensities were associated with 1.21 times more NPS (95% CI 1.05–1.39) and 0.63 units (95% CI 0.19–1.08) more severe NPS. NPS number (MMSE mean difference − 1.15, 95% CI -1.67 to -0.63; ADAS cognitive mean difference 1.91, 95% CI 1.26–2.56) and severity (MMSE − 0.55, 95% CI -0.80 to -0.30; ADAS cognitive mean difference 0.89, 95% CI 0.57–1.21) predicted lower cognitive function. Greater lifelong mental activities partially mediated the relationship between CAA severity and NPS (indirect effect 0.05, 95% CI 0.0007-0.13), and greater lifelong mental activities led to less pronounced CAA severity and thus to less NPS (indirect effect − 0.08, 95% CI -0.22 to -0.002). Discussion This study suggests that NPS are common in CAA, and that this relationship may be driven by CAA severity. Furthermore, NPS seem to be tied to lower cognitive function. However, lifelong mental activities might mitigate the impact of NPS in CAA.

CRPropa is a Monte Carlo framework for simulating the propagation of (ultra-) high-energy particles in the Universe, including cosmic rays, gamma rays, electrons, and neutrinos. It covers energies from ZeV down to GeV for gamma rays and electrons, and TeV for cosmic rays and neutrinos, supporting various astrophysical environments such as the surroundings of astrophysical sources, galactic, and extragalactic environments. The newest version, CRPropa 3.2, represents a significant leap forward towards a universal multi-messenger framework, opening up the possibility for many more astrophysical applications. This includes extensions to simulate cosmic-ray acceleration and particle interactions within astrophysical source environments, a full Monte Carlo treatment of electromagnetic cascades, improved ensemble-averaged Galactic propagation, significant performance improvements for cosmic-ray tracking through magnetic fields, and a user-friendly implementation of custom photon fields, among many more enhancements. We study strong field ionization of molecular hydrogen in highly intense co-rotating two-color (CoRTC) laser fields. The measured electron momentum distributions show alternating half-rings (AHR) that are characteristic for sub-cycle interference. We report on the role of the two-color field ratio for the visibility of this sub-cycle interference. The ratio of the peak electric field at 780 nm compared to the peak electric field at 390 nm $E_{780}/E_{390}$ is varied from 0.037 to 0.18. We find very good agreement with the results from our semiclassical simulation. We conclude that the AHR pattern is visible if two conditions are fulfilled. First, the amplitudes of the two pathways that lead to the sub-cycle interference have to be similar, which is the case for low two-color field ratios $E_{780}/E_{390}$. Second, the phase difference of the two pathways must be strong enough to allow for destructive interference, which is the case for high two-color field ratios $E_{780}/E_{390}$. For typical experimental conditions, we find that two-color field ratios $E_{780}/E_{390}$ in the range from 0.037 to 0.12 lead to good visibility of the AHR pattern. Abstract Background The increasing care complexity of nursing home residents living with dementia requires new care models that strengthen professional collaboration. To contribute to the sustainable implementation of new care models, it is important that they are linked to the care reality. However, little is known about intra- and interprofessional organization and provision of care in German nursing homes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the current care situation, problems and strengths regarding intra- and interprofessional collaboration in the care of residents living with dementia. Methods We conducted a holistic multiple case study. The individual care units in which residents living with dementia are cared for were defined as cases. The context was built by the respective nursing homes and their regional affiliation to the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. We used qualitative face-to-face interviews, documents and context questionnaires for data collection. The different sources of evidence served to capture complementary perspectives and to validate the findings. First, the collected qualitative data were analyzed using deductive-inductive content analysis. Second, similarities and differences between the cases were identified to elaborate case-specific and cross-case patterns and themes. The reporting followed the EQUATOR reporting guideline for organizational case studies. Results We included four care units comprising 21 professionals (nurses, physicians, social worker, physiotherapist, pharmacist) and 14 relatives of residents living with dementia. The analysis revealed four categories to describe current intra- and interprofessional collaboration in all cases: actors and their roles, service delivery, coordination and governance, and communication channel. Moreover, we identified three categories that relate to the strengths and problems of intra- and interprofessional collaboration in all cases: role understanding, teamwork, and communication and exchange. Although we examined similar care units, we found differences in the realization of professional collaboration and resulting problems and strengths that are connected to the organizational contexts and strategies used. Conclusions Even though professional collaboration follows given patterns; these patterns do differ context-specifically and are perceived as problematic and fragmentary. Therefore, the identified differences and problems in collaboration need to be addressed in future research to develop and successfully implement tailored innovative care models.

We investigate the applicability of deep reinforcement learning algorithms to the adaptive initial access beam alignment problem for mmWave communications using the state-of-the-art proximal policy optimization algorithm as an example. In comparison to recent unsupervised learning based approaches developed to tackle this problem, deep reinforcement learning has the potential to address a new and wider range of applications, since, in principle, no (differentiable) model of the channel and/or the whole system is required for training, and only agent-environment interactions are necessary to learn an algorithm (be it online or using a recorded dataset). We show that, although the chosen off-the-shelf deep reinforcement learning agent fails to perform well when trained on realistic problem sizes, introducing action space shaping in the form of beamforming modules vastly improves the performance, without sacrificing much generalizability. Using this add-on, the agent is able to deliver competitive performance to various state-of-the-art methods on simulated environments, even under realistic problem sizes. This demonstrates that through well-directed modification, deep reinforcement learning may have a chance to compete with other approaches in this area, opening up many straightforward extensions to other/similar scenarios.

We present experimental data on the strong-field ionization of the argon dimer in a co-rotating two-color (CoRTC) laser field. We observe a sub-cycle interference pattern in the photoelectron momentum distribution and infer the Wigner time delay using holographic angular streaking of electrons (HASE). We find that the Wigner time delay varies by more than 400 attoseconds as a function of the electron emission direction with respect to the molecular axis. While head-mounted displays (HMDs) for Virtual Reality (VR) have become widely available in the consumer market, they pose a considerable obstacle for a realistic face-to-face conversation in VR since HMDs hide a significant portion of the participants faces. Even with image streams from cameras directly attached to an HMD, stitching together a convincing image of an entire face remains a challenging task because of extreme capture angles and strong lens distortions due to a wide field of view. Compared to the long line of research in VR, reconstruction of faces hidden beneath an HMD is a very recent topic of research. While the current state-of-the-art solutions demonstrate photo-realistic 3D reconstruction results, they require high-cost laboratory equipment and large computational costs. We present an approach that focuses on low-cost hardware and can be used on a commodity gaming computer with a single GPU. We leverage the benefits of an end-to-end pipeline by means of Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN). Our GAN produces a frontal-facing 2.5D point cloud based on a training dataset captured with an RGBD camera. In our approach, the training process is offline, while the reconstruction runs in real-time. Our results show adequate reconstruction quality within the 'learned' expressions. Expressions not learned by the network produce artifacts and can trigger the Uncanny Valley effect.

Both erectile dysfunction and alexithymia can significantly affect the psychological well-being of both patients and their partners.AimsThis study examines the association of erectile dysfunction with alexithymia in patients after ICD implantation. Additionally, we investigate potential moderators of this association.MethodPatients (N=165) completed self-rating questionnaires: Toronto Alexithymia scale (TAS-20), International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5), Adjustment disorder – new module (ADNM-20). Descriptive statistics, correlations, multivariate linear regressions, and moderation analysis were conducted.ResultsThe determinants of erectile dysfunction in ICD patients were explored in a regression model explaining 22% of the total variance. The ADNM-20 subscale preoccupation was found to significantly moderate the relationship between the alexithymia subscale externally oriented thinking and erectile dysfunction (R2 = 0.02, p=0.03).ConclusionWe did not find evidence for a relationship between externally oriented thinking and erectile dysfunction at low to average levels of preoccupation. However, evidence for such a relationship was found at high levels of preoccupation, where more externally oriented thinking was related to more erectile dysfunction. The intersection of alexithymia and erectile dysfunction represents a promising avenue for future research, offering opportunities to unravel the intricate connections between emotional processing and sexual health. Enhancing insights into this relationship could lead to innovative interventions that address the needs of individuals struggling with both conditions, fostering improved emotional expression, intimate relationships, and sexual satisfaction.

We present experimental data on the strong field tunnel ionization of argon in a counter-rotating two-color (CRTC) laser field. We find that the initial momentum component along the tunneling direction changes sign comparing the rising and the falling edge of the CRTC field. If the initial momentum at the tunnel exit points in the direction of the ion at the instant of tunneling, this manifests as an enhanced Coulomb interaction of the outgoing electron with its parent ion. When operating massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) channels at different frequencies (frequency division duplex (FDD) operation), acquisition of channel state information (CSI) for downlink precoding is a major challenge. Since, barring transceiver impairments, both UL and DL CSI are determined by the physical environment surrounding transmitter and receiver, it stands to reason that, for a static environment, a mapping from UL CSI to DL CSI may exist. First, we propose to use various neural network (NN)-based approaches that learn this mapping and provide baselines using classical signal processing. Second, we introduce a scheme to evaluate the performance and quality of generalization of all approaches, distinguishing between known and previously unseen physical locations. Third, we evaluate all approaches on a real-world indoor dataset collected with a 32-antenna channel sounder.

Abstract The rotational dynamics of a molecule is sensitive to neighboring atoms or molecules, which can be used to probe the intermolecular interactions in the gas phase. Here, we real-time track the laser-driven rotational dynamics of a single N2 molecule affected by neighboring Ar atoms using coincident Coulomb explosion imaging. We find that the alignment trace of N-N axis decays fast and only persists for a few picoseconds when an Ar atom is nearby. We show that the decay rate depends on the rotational geometry of whether the Ar atom stays in or out of the rotational plane of the N2 molecule. Additionally, the vibration of the van der Waals bond is found to be excited through coupling with the rotational N-N axis. The observations are well reproduced by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation after taking the interaction potential between the N2 and Ar into consideration. Our results demonstrate that environmental effects on a molecular level can be probed by directly visualizing the rotational dynamics.

Abstract Bone marrow plasma cells (BMPC) are the correlate of humoral immunity, consistently releasing antibodies into the bloodstream. It remains unclear if BMPC reflect different activation environments or maturation of their precursors. Here we define human BMPC heterogeneity and track the recruitment of antibody-secreting cells (ASC) from SARS-CoV-2 vaccine immune reactions to the bone marrow (BM). Trajectories based on single-cell transcriptomes and repertoires of peripheral and BM ASC reveal sequential colonisation of BMPC compartments. In activated B cells, IL-21 suppresses CD19 expression, indicating that CD19low-BMPC are derived from follicular, while CD19high-BMPC originate from extrafollicular immune reactions. In primary immune reactions, both CD19low- and CD19high-BMPC compartments are populated. In secondary immune reactions, most BMPC are recruited to CD19high-BMPC compartments, reflecting their origin from extrafollicular reactivations of memory B cells. A pattern also observable in vaccinated-convalescent individuals and upon diphtheria/tetanus/pertussis recall-vaccination. Thus, BMPC diversity reflects the evolution of a given humoral immune response.
