We present a spatially-resolved (~3 pc pix$^{-1}$) analysis of the distribution, kinematics, and excitation of warm H2 gas in the nuclear starburst region of M83. Our JWST/MIRI IFU spectroscopy reveals a clumpy reservoir of warm H2 (> 200 K) with a mass of ~2.3 x 10$^{5}$ Msun in the area covered by all four MRS channels. We additionally use the [Ne II] 12.8 ${\mu}$m and [Ne III] 15.5 ${\mu}$m lines as tracers of the star formation rate, ionizing radiation hardness, and kinematics of the ionized ISM, finding tantalizing connections to the H2 properties and to the ages of the underlying stellar populations. Finally, qualitative comparisons to the trove of public, high-spatial-resolution multiwavelength data available on M83 shows that our MRS spectroscopy potentially traces all stages of the process of creating massive star clusters, from the embedded proto-cluster phase through the dispersion of ISM from stellar feedback., Comment: 21 pages, 11+1 figures; submitted to ApJ

We present the results of a James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRCam and NIRSpec investigation into the young massive star cluster (YMC) population of NGC 3256, the most cluster-rich luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) in the Great Observatories All Sky LIRG Survey. We detect 3061 compact YMC candidates with a $S/N \geq 3$ at F150W, F200W, and F335M. Based on yggdrasil stellar population models, we identify 116/3061 sources with F150W - F200W $> 0.47$ and F200W - F355M $> -1.37$ colors suggesting they are young (t $\leq 5$ Myr), dusty ($A_{V} = 5 - 15$), and massive ($M_{\odot} > 10^{5}$). This increases the sample of dust-enshrouded YMCs detected in this system by an order of magnitude relative to previous HST studies. With NIRSpec IFU pointings centered on the northern and southern nucleus, we extract the Pa$\alpha$ and 3.3$\mu$m PAH equivalent widths for 8 bright and isolated YMCs. Variations in both the F200W - F335M color and 3.3$\mu$m PAH emission with the Pa$\alpha$ line strength suggest a rapid dust clearing ($< 3 - 4$ Myr) for the emerging YMCs in the nuclei of NGC 3256. Finally, with both the age and dust emission accurately measured we use yggdrasil to derive the color excess (E(B - V)) for all 8 YMCs. We demonstrate that YMCs with strong 3.3$\mu$m PAH emission (F200W - F335M $> 0$) correspond to sources with E(B - V) $> 3$, which are typically missed in UV-optical studies. We present observations of mid-J J=4-3 or J=5-4 carbon monoxide (CO) emission lines and continuum emission from a sample of ten of the most luminous log(L/L_solar)~14 Hot Dust-Obscured Galaxies (Hot DOGs) discovered by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) with redshifts up to 4.6. We uncover broad spectral lines (FWHM~400 km/s) in these objects, suggesting a turbulent molecular interstellar medium (ISM) may be ubiquitous in Hot DOGs. A halo of molecular gas, extending out to a radius of 5 kpc is observed in W2305-0039, likely supplied by 940 km/s molecular outflows. W0831+0140 is plausibly the host of a merger between at least two galaxies, consistent with observations made using ionized gas. These CO(4-3) observations contrast with previous CO(1-0) studies of the same sources: the CO(4-3) to CO(1-0) luminosity ratios exceed 300 in each source, suggesting that the lowest excited states of CO are underluminous. Using a combination of HST, JWST, and ALMA data, we perform spatially resolved spectral energy distributions (SED) fitting of fourteen 4

Utilizing JWST MIRI/MRS IFU observations of the kiloparsec scale central regions, we showcase the diversity of ionized gas distributions and kinematics in six nearby Seyfert galaxies included in the GATOS survey. Specifically, we present spatially resolved flux distribution and velocity field maps of six ionized emission lines covering a large range of ionization potentials ($15.8-97.1$ eV). Based on these maps, we showcase the evidence of ionized gas outflows in the six targets, and find some highly disturbed regions in NGC\,5728, NGC\,5506, and ESO137-G034. We propose AGN-driven radio jets plausibly play an important role in triggering these highly disturbed regions. With the outflow rates estimated based on [Ne~{\footnotesize V}] emission, we find the six targets tend to have ionized outflow rates converged to a narrower range than previous finding. We investigate the spatial extent and structure of the [CII] line emission in a sample of 34 galaxies at $z=4-6$ from the ALMA-CRISTAL Survey. By modeling the [CII] line emission in the interferometric visibility, we derive the effective radius of [CII] line emission assuming an exponential profile. The [CII] line radius ranges from 0.5 to 3.5 kpc with an average value of $\langle R_{e,[CII]}\rangle=1.90$ kpc. We compare the [CII] sizes with the sizes of rest-frame UV and FIR continua, which were measured from the HST F160W images and ALMA Band-7 continuum images, respectively. We confirm that the [CII] line emission is more spatially extended than the continuum emission, with average size ratios of $\langle R_{e,[CII]}/R_{e,UV}\rangle=2.90$ and $\langle R_{e,[CII]}/R_{e,FIR}\rangle=1.54$, although about half of the FIR-detected sample show comparable spatial extent between [CII] line and FIR continuum emission. The residual visibility of the best-fit model do not show statistical evidence of flux excess, indicating that the [CII] line emission in star-forming galaxies can be characterized by an extended exponential profile. Overall, our results suggest that the spatial extent of [CII] line emission can primarily be explained by PDRs associated with star formation activity, while the contribution from diffuse neutral medium (atomic gas) and the effects of past merger events may further expand the [CII] line distributions, causing their variations. Finally, we report the negative correlation between $\Sigma_{[CII]}$ and EW$_{Ly\alpha}$, and possible negative correlation between $R_{e,[CII]}/R_{e,UV}$ and EW$_{Ly\alpha}$, which may be in line with the scenario that atomic gas largely contributes to the extended [CII] line emission. Hot Dust-Obscured Galaxies (Hot DOGs) are a rare population of hyper-luminous infrared galaxies discovered by the WISE mission. Despite the significant obscuration of the AGN by dust in these systems, pronounced broad and blue-shifted emission lines are often observed. Previous work has shown that 8 Hot DOGs, referred to as Blue-excess Hot DOGs (BHDs), present a blue excess consistent with type 1 quasar emission in their UV-optical SEDs, which has been shown to originate from the light of the obscured central engine scattered into the line of sight. We present an analysis of the rest-frame optical emission characteristics for 172 Hot DOGs through UV-MIR SED modeling and spectroscopic details, with a particular focus on the identification of BHDs. We find that while the optical emission observed in Hot DOGs is in most cases dominated by a young stellar population, 26% of Hot DOGs show a significant enough blue excess emission to be classified as BHDs. Based on their broad CIV and MgII lines, we find that the $M_{\rm BH}$ in BHDs range from $10^{8.7}$ to $10^{10} \ M_{\odot}$. When using the same emission lines in regular Hot DOGs, we find the $M_{\rm BH}$ estimates cover the entire range found for BHDs while also extending to somewhat lower values. This agreement may imply that the broad lines in regular Hot DOGs also originate from scattered light from the central engine, just as in BHDs, although a more detailed study would be needed to rule out an outflow-driven nature. Similar to $z\sim 6$ quasars, we find that Hot DOGs sit above the local relation between stellar and black hole mass, suggesting either that AGN feedback has not yet significantly suppressed the stellar mass growth in the host galaxies, or that they will be outliers of the relation when reaching $z$=0., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures. We present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Integral Field Spectrograph observations of NGC 3256, a local infrared-luminous late-stage merging system with two nuclei roughly 1$\;\rm{kpc}$ apart, both of which have evidence of cold molecular outflows. Using JWST/NIRSpec and MIRI datasets, we investigate this morphologically complex system on spatial scales of $<$100$\;\rm{pc}$, where we focus on the warm molecular H$_2$ gas surrounding the nuclei. We detect collimated outflowing warm H$_2$ gas originating from the southern nucleus, though we do not find significant outflowing H$_2$ gas surrounding the northern nucleus. We measure maximum intrinsic outflow velocities of $\sim$1,000$\;\rm{km}\;\rm{s}^{-1}$, which extend out to a distance of 0.7$\;\rm{kpc}$. Based on H$_2$ S(7)/S(1) ratios, we find a larger fraction of warmer gas near the S nucleus, which decreases with increasing distance from the nucleus, signifying the southern nucleus as a primary source of H$_2$ heating. The gas mass of the warm H$_2$ outflow component is estimated to be $M\rm{_{warm,out}}=(1.4\pm0.2)\times10^6\;\rm{M}_{\odot}$, as much as 6$\%$ of the cold H$_2$ mass estimated using ALMA CO data. The outflow time scale is about $7\times10^5\;\rm{yr}$, resulting in a mass outflow rate $\dot{M}\rm{_{warm,out}}=2.0\pm0.8\;\rm{M}_{\odot}\;\rm{yr}^{-1}$ and kinetic power $P\rm{_{warm,out}}\;\sim\;4\times10^{41}\;\rm{erg}\;\rm{s}^{-1}$. Lastly, regions within our 3.0"x3.0" NIRSpec data where the outflowing gas reside show high [Fe II]/Pa$\beta$ and H$_2$/Br$\gamma$ line ratios, indicate enhanced mechanical heating caused by the outflows. The fluxes and ratios of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) in these regions are not significantly different compared to those elsewhere in the disk, suggesting the outflows may not significantly alter the PAH ionization state or grain size., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures. We present detailed spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling of 14 local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with outstanding photometric data from the literature covering the ultraviolet--infrared (FIR) and radio bands ($\sim$50 MHz to $\sim$30 GHz). We employ the CIGALE SED fitting code to model the ultraviolet--FIR--radio SED. For the radio-only SED modeling, we use the UltraNest package, leveraging its nested sampling algorithm. Combining the results from our previous study on 11 luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs), we discuss the global astrophysical properties of a sample of 25 starburst galaxies (z $<$ 0.5). Their radio spectra are frequently characterized by bends and turnovers, with no indication of ULIRGs exhibiting more complicated SEDs than LIRGs despite showing more signs of interactions. Including radio measurements in the CIGALE modeling constrained the dust luminosity and star formation rate (SFR) estimates by more than 1 order of magnitude better than previously reported for starburst galaxies. We show that total and nonthermal radio luminosity at 1.4 and 4.8 GHz frequencies can be good estimators of recent SFRs for all LIRGs and those ULIRGS with an insignificant influence of active galactic nuclei. A weaker but still significant correlation is observed between radio SFRs at 1.4 GHz and old (averaged over 100 Myr) SFRs based on SED modeling, indicative of multiple episodes of starburst activity during their lifetime. The thermal radio luminosity at 4.8 GHz is a better tracer of recent star formation than the thermal luminosity at 1.4 GHz. The enormous increase in mid-IR sensitivity and spatial and spectral resolution provided by the JWST spectrographs enables, for the first time, detailed extragalactic studies of molecular vibrational bands. This opens an entirely new window for the study of the molecular interstellar medium in luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs). We present a detailed analysis of rovibrational bands of gas-phase CO, H$_2$O, C$_2$H$_2$ and HCN towards the heavily-obscured eastern nucleus of the LIRG VV 114, as observed by NIRSpec and MIRI MRS. Spectra extracted from apertures of 130 pc in radius show a clear dichotomy between the obscured AGN and two intense starburst regions. We detect the 2.3 $\mu$m CO bandheads, characteristic of cool stellar atmospheres, in the star-forming regions, but not towards the AGN. Surprisingly, at 4.7 $\mathrm{\mu}$m we find highly-excited CO ($T_\mathrm{ex} \approx 700-800$ K out to at least rotational level $J = 27$) towards the star-forming regions, but only cooler gas ($T_\mathrm{ex} \approx 200$ K) towards the AGN. We conclude that only mid-infrared pumping through the rovibrational lines can account for the equilibrium conditions found for CO and H$_2$O in the deeply-embedded starbursts. Here the CO bands probe regions with an intense local radiation field inside dusty young massive star clusters or near the most massive young stars. The lack of high-excitation molecular gas towards the AGN is attributed to geometric dilution of the intense radiation from the bright point source. We present the morphological parameters and global properties of dust-obscured star formation in typical star-forming galaxies at z=4-6. Among 26 galaxies composed of 20 galaxies observed by the Cycle-8 ALMA Large Program, CRISTAL, and six galaxies from archival data, we have individually detected rest-frame 158$\mu$m dust continuum emission from 19 galaxies, nine of which are reported for the first time. The derived far-infrared luminosities are in the range $\log_{10} L_{\rm IR}\,[L_{\odot}]=$10.9-12.4, an order of magnitude lower than previously detected massive dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs). The average relationship between the fraction of dust-obscured star formation ($f_{\rm obs}$) and the stellar mass is consistent with previous results at z=4-6 in a mass range of $\log_{10} M_{\ast}\,[M_{\odot}]\sim$9.5-11.0 and show potential evolution from z=6-9. The individual $f_{\rm obs}$ exhibits a significant diversity, and it shows a correlation with the spatial offset between the dust and the UV continuum, suggesting the inhomogeneous dust reddening may cause the source-to-source scatter in $f_{\rm obs}$. The effective radii of the dust emission are on average $\sim$1.5 kpc and are $\sim2$ times more extended than the rest-frame UV. The infrared surface densities of these galaxies ($\Sigma_{\rm IR}\sim2.0\times10^{10}\,L_{\odot}\,{\rm kpc}^{-2}$) are one order of magnitude lower than those of DSFGs that host compact central starbursts. On the basis of the comparable contribution of dust-obscured and dust-unobscured star formation along with their similar spatial extent, we suggest that typical star-forming galaxies at z=4-6 form stars throughout the entirety of their disks.

We present new JWST-NIRSpec IFS data for the luminous infrared galaxy NGC7469: a nearby (70.6Mpc) active galaxy with a Sy 1.5 nucleus that drives a highly ionized gas outflow and a prominent nuclear star-forming ring. Using the superb sensitivity and high spatial resolution of the JWST instrument NIRSpec-IFS, we investigate the role of the Seyfert nucleus in the excitation and dynamics of the circumnuclear gas. Our analysis focuses on the [Fe ii], H2, and hydrogen recombination lines that trace the radiation/shocked-excited molecular and ionized ISM around the AGN. We investigate the gas excitation through H2/Br{\gamma} and [Fe ii]/Pa\b{eta} emission line ratios and find that photoionization by the AGN dominates within the central 300 pc of the galaxy and together with a small region show ing signatures of shock-heated gas; these shock-heated regions are likely associated with a compact radio jet. In addition, the velocity field and velocity dispersion maps reveal complex gas kinematics. Rotation is the dominant feature, but we also identify non-circular motions consistent with gas inflows as traced by the velocity residuals and the spiral pattern in the Pa{\alpha} velocity dispersion map. The inflow is consistent with the mass outflow rate and two orders of magnitude higher than the AGN accretion rate. The compact nuclear radio jet has enough power to drive the highly ionized outflow. We present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) integral-field spectroscopy of the nearby luminous infrared galaxy, NGC 7469. We take advantage of the high spatial/spectral resolution and wavelength coverage of JWST /NIRSpec to study the 3.3 um neutral polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) grain emission on ~60 pc scales. We find a clear change in the average grain properties between the star-forming ring and the central AGN. Regions in the vicinity of the AGN, with [NeIII]/[NeII]>0.25, tend to have larger grain sizes and lower aliphatic-to-aromatic (3.4/3.3) ratios indicating that smaller grains are preferentially removed by photo-destruction in the vicinity of the AGN. We find an overall suppression of the total PAH emission relative to the ionized gas in the central 1 kpc region of the AGN in NGC 7469 compared to what has been observed with Spitzer on 3 kpc scales. However, the fractional 3.3 um to total PAH power is enhanced in the starburst ring, possibly due to a variety of physical effects on sub-kpc scales, including recurrent fluorescence of small grains or multiple photon absorption by large grains. Finally, the IFU data show that while the 3.3 um PAH-derived star formation rate (SFR) in the ring is 8% higher than that inferred from the [NeII] and [NeIII] emission lines, the integrated SFR derived from the 3.3 um feature would be underestimated by a factor of two due to the deficit of PAHs around the AGN, as might occur if a composite system like NGC 7469 were to be observed at high-redshift., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, Submitted to ApJL

We report the identification of Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) candidates around the most luminous Hot Dust-Obscured Galaxy (Hot DOG) known, WISE J224607.56$-$052634.9 (W2246$-$0526) at $z=4.601$, using deep \textit{r}-, \textit{i}-, and \textit{z}-band imaging from the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph South (GMOS-S). We use the surface density of LBGs to probe the Mpc-scale environment of W2246$-$0526 to characterize its richness and evolutionary state. We identify LBG candidates in the vicinity of W2246$-$0526 using the selection criteria developed by \cite{2004VOuchi} and \cite{2006Yoshida} in the Subaru Deep Field and in the Subaru XMM-Newton Deep Field, slightly modified to account for the difference between the filters used, and we find 37 and 55 LBG candidates, respectively. Matching to the $z$-band depths of those studies, this corresponds to $\delta = 5.8^{+2.4}_{-1.9}$ times the surface density of LBGs expected in the field. Interestingly, the Hot DOG itself, as well as a confirmed neighbor, do not satisfy either LBG selection criteria, suggesting we may be missing a large number of companion galaxies. Our analysis shows that we are most likely only finding those with higher-than-average IGM optical depth or moderately high dust obscuration. The number density of LBG candidates is not concentrated around W2246$-$0526, suggesting either an early evolutionary stage for the proto-cluster or that the Hot DOG may not be the most massive galaxy, or that the Hot DOG may be affecting the IGM transparency in its vicinity. The overdensity around W2246$-$0526 is comparable to overdensities found around other Hot DOGs and is somewhat higher than typically found for radio galaxies and luminous quasars at a similar redshift., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures. Surface densities of gas, dust and stars provide a window into the physics of star-formation that, until the advent of high-resolution far-infrared/sub-millimeter observations, has been historically difficult to assess amongst dusty galaxies. To study the link between infrared (IR) surface densities and dust properties, we leverage the Atacama Large Millimetre/Submillimetre Array (ALMA) archive to measure the extent of cold dust emission in 15 $z\sim2$ IR selected galaxies selected on the basis of having available mid-IR spectroscopy from Spitzer. We use the mid-IR spectra to constrain the relative balance between dust heating from star-formation and active galactic nuclei (AGN), and to measure emission from Polycylic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) -- small dust grains that play a key role in the photoelectric heating of gas. In general, we find that dust-obscured star-formation at high IR surface densities exhibits similar properties at low- and high-redshift, namely: local luminous IR galaxies have comparable PAH luminosity to total dust mass ratios as high-$z$ galaxies, and star-formation at $z\sim0-2$ is more efficient at high IR surface densities despite the fact that our sample of high$-z$ galaxies are closer to the main-sequence than local luminous IR galaxies. High star-formation efficiencies are coincident with a decline in the PAH/IR luminosity ratio reminiscent of the deficit observed in far-infrared fine-structure lines. Changes in the gas and dust conditions arising from high star-formation surface densities might help drive the star-formation efficiency up. We report the discovery of the hyperluminous, highly obscured AGN WISE J190445.04+485308.9 (W1904+4853 hereafter, $L_{bol} = 1.1 \times 10^{13} \ L_{\odot}$) at z=0.415. Its well-sampled spectral energy distribution (SED) is dominated by infrared dust emission, though broad emission lines are detected in the optical spectra. These features suggest that W1904+4853 contains an actively accreting supermassive black hole hidden in its dusty cocoon, resembling the observed properties of Hot Dust-Obscured Galaxies (Hot DOGs), a population previously only identified at z>1.0. Using the broad component of the MgII emission line, we estimate a black hole mass of $log \ (M_{BH}/M_{\odot}) = 8.4 \pm 0.4$. The corresponding Eddington ratio of 1.4 implies that the central black hole accretion is at the theoretical limit of isotropic accretion. The rest-frame UV-optical SED also indicates that the host galaxy of W1904+4853 harbors strong star formation activity at the rate of $6-84 \ M_{\odot} \ \rm{yr^{-1}}$ with an independent estimate of SFR up to $\sim 45 \ M_{\odot} \ \rm{yr^{-1}}$ using the [O II] emission line. With an estimated stellar mass of $3 \times 10^{10} \ M_{\odot}$, the host galaxy appears to be a starburst system with respect to the main sequence of the star-forming galaxies at the same redshift. Although blueshifted and asymmetric [O III] emission provides evidence of an outflow, we estimate it to be an order of magnitude smaller than the star formation rate, indicating that the current obscured AGN activity at the center has not yet produced significant feedback on the host galaxy star formation activity. W1904+4853 supports the interpretation that Hot DOGs are a rare transitional phase of AGN accretion in galaxy evolution, a phase that can persist into the present-day Universe., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures. Characterizing the physical conditions (density, temperature, ionization state, metallicity, etc) of the interstellar medium is critical to our understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxies. Here we present a multi-line study of the interstellar medium in the host galaxy of a quasar at z~6.4, i.e., when the universe was 840 Myr old. This galaxy is one of the most active and massive objects emerging from the dark ages, and therefore represents a benchmark for models of the early formation of massive galaxies. We used the Atacama Large Millimeter Array to target an ensemble of tracers of ionized, neutral, and molecular gas, namely the fine-structure lines: [OIII] 88$\mu$m, [NII] 122$\mu$m, [CII] 158$\mu$m, and [CI] 370$\mu$m and the rotational transitions of CO(7-6), CO(15-14), CO(16-15), and CO(19-18); OH 163.1$\mu$m and 163.4$\mu$m; and H$_2$O 3(0,3)-2(1,2), 3(3,1)-4(0,4), 3(3,1)-3(2,2), 4(0,4)-3(1,3), 4(3,2)-4(2,3). All the targeted fine-structure lines are detected, as are half of the targeted molecular transitions. By combining the associated line luminosities, the constraints on the dust temperature from the underlying continuum emission, and predictions from photoionization models of the interstellar medium, we find that the ionized phase accounts for about one third of the total gaseous mass budget, and is responsible for half of the total [CII] emission. It is characterized by high density (n~180 cm$^{-3}$), typical of HII regions. The spectral energy distribution of the photoionizing radiation is comparable to that emitted by B-type stars. Star formation also appears to drive the excitation of the molecular medium. We find marginal evidence for outflow-related shocks in the dense molecular phase, but not in other gas phases. ALMA observations of the long wavelength dust continuum are used to estimate the gas masses in a sample of 708 star-forming (SF) galaxies at z = 0.3 to 4.5. We determine the dependence of gas masses and star formation efficiencies (SFE=SFR per unit gass mass). We find that 70 percent of the increase in SFRs of the MS is due to the increased gas masses at earlier epochs while 30 percent is due to increased efficiency of SF. For galaxies above the MS this is reversed with 70 percent of the increased SFR relative to the MS being due to elevated SFEs. Thus, the major evolution of star formation activity at early epochs is driven by increased gas masses, while the starburst activity taking galaxies above the MS is due to enhanced triggering of star formation (likely due to galactic merging). The interstellar gas peaks at z = 2 and dominates the stellar mass down to z = 1.2. Accretion rates needed to maintain continuity of the MS evolution exceed 100 Msun per yr at z > 2. The galactic gas contents are likely the driving determinant for both the rise in SF and AGN activity from z = 5 to their peak at z = 2 and subsequent fall to lower z. We present the results of a {\it James Webb Space Telescope} NIRCam investigation into the young massive star cluster (YMC) population in the luminous infrared galaxy VV 114. We identify 374 compact YMC candidates with a $S/N \geq 3$, 5, and 5 at F150W, F200W, and F356W respectively. A direct comparison with our {\it HST} cluster catalog reveals that $\sim 20\%$ of these sources are undetected at optical wavelengths. Based on {\it yggdrasil} stellar population models, we identify 17 YMC candidates in our {\it JWST} imaging alone with F150W-F200W and F200W-F356W colors suggesting they are all very young, dusty ($A_{V} = 5 - 15$), and massive ($10^{5.8} < M_{\odot} < 10^{6.1}$). The discovery of these `hidden' sources, many of which are found in the `overlap' region between the two nuclei, quadruples the number of $t < 3$ Myr clusters, and nearly doubles the number of $t < 6$ Myr clusters detected in VV 114. Now extending the cluster age distribution ($dN/d\tau \propto \tau^{\gamma}$) to the youngest ages, we find a slope of $\gamma = -1.30 \pm 0.39$ for $10^{6} < \tau (\mathrm{yr}) < 10^{7}$, which is consistent with the previously determined value from $10^{7} < \tau (\mathrm{yr}) < 10^{8.5}$, and confirms that VV 114 has a steep age distribution slope for all massive star clusters across the entire range of cluster ages observed. Finally, the consistency between our {\it JWST}- and {\it HST}-derived age distribution slopes indicates that the balance between cluster formation and destruction has not been significantly altered in VV 114 over the last 0.5 Gyr., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, published in the Astrophysical Journal

We present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) integral-field spectroscopy of the nearby merging, luminous infrared galaxy, NGC 7469. This galaxy hosts a Seyfert type-1.5 nucleus, a highly ionized outflow, and a bright, circumnuclear star-forming ring, making it an ideal target to study AGN feedback in the local Universe. We take advantage of the high spatial/spectral resolution of JWST/MIRI to isolate the star-forming regions surrounding the central active nucleus and study the properties of the dust and warm molecular gas on ~100 pc scales. The starburst ring exhibits prominent Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission, with grain sizes and ionization states varying by only ~30%, and a total star formation rate of $\rm 10 - 30 \ M_\odot$/yr derived from fine structure and recombination emission lines. Using pure rotational lines of H2, we detect 1.2$\times$10$^{7} \rm \ M_\odot$ of warm molecular gas at a temperature higher than 200 K in the ring. All PAH bands get significantly weaker towards the central source, where larger and possibly more ionized grains dominate the emission. However, the bulk of the dust and molecular gas in the ring appears unaffected by the ionizing radiation or the outflowing wind from the AGN. We present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) imaging of NGC 7469 with the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and the Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI). NGC 7469 is a nearby, $z=0.01627$, luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) that hosts both a Seyfert Type-1.5 nucleus and a circumnuclear starburst ring with a radius of $\sim$0.5 kpc. The new near-infrared (NIR) JWST imaging reveals 66 star-forming regions, 37 of which were not detected by HST observations. Twenty-eight of the 37 sources have very red NIR colors that indicate obscurations up to A$_{\rm{v}}\sim7$ and a contribution of at least 25$\%$ from hot dust emission to the 4.4$\mu$m band. Their NIR colors are also consistent with young ($<$5 Myr) stellar populations and more than half of them are coincident with the MIR emission peaks. These younger, dusty star-forming regions account for $\sim$6$\%$ and $\sim$17$\%$ of the total 1.5$\mu$m and 4.4$\mu$m luminosity of the starburst ring, respectively. Thanks to JWST, we find a significant number of young dusty sources that were previously unseen due to dust extinction. The newly identified 28 young sources are a significant increase compared to the number of HST-detected young sources (4-5). This makes the total percentage of the young population rise from $\sim$15$\%$ to 48$\%$. The nearby, luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) NGC 7469 hosts a Seyfert nucleus with a circumnuclear star-forming ring and is thus the ideal local laboratory for investigating the starburst--AGN connection in detail. We present integral-field observations of the central 1.3 kpc region in NGC 7469 obtained with the JWST Mid-InfraRed Instrument. Molecular and ionized gas distributions and kinematics at a resolution of {\sim}100 pc over the 4.9 - 7.6{\mu}m region are examined to study gas dynamics influenced by the central AGN. The low-ionization [Fe II] {\lambda}5.34{\mu}m and [Ar II] {\lambda}6.99{\mu}m lines are bright on the nucleus and in the starburst ring, as opposed to H2 S(5) {\lambda}6.91{\mu}m which is strongly peaked at the center and surrounding ISM. The high-ionization [Mg V] line is resolved and shows a broad, blueshifted component associated with the outflow. It has a nearly face-on geometry that is strongly peaked on the nucleus, where it reaches a maximum velocity of -650 km/s, and extends about 400 pc to the East. Regions of enhanced velocity dispersion in H2 and [Fe II] {\sim}180 pc from the AGN that also show high L(H2)/L(PAH) and L([Fe II])/L(Pf{\alpha}) ratios to the W and N of the nucleus pinpoint regions where the ionized outflow is depositing energy, via shocks, into the dense interstellar medium between the nucleus and the starburst ring. These resolved mid-infrared observations of the nuclear gas dynamics demonstrate the power of JWST and its high-sensitivity integral-field spectroscopic capability to resolve feedback processes around supermassive black holes in the dusty cores of nearby LIRGs., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 1 table; accepted for publication in ApJL

James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) images of the luminous infrared (IR) galaxy VV 114 are presented. This redshift ~ 0.020 merger has a western component (VV 114W) rich in optical star clusters and an eastern component (VV 114E) hosting a luminous mid-IR nucleus hidden at UV and optical wavelengths by dust lanes. With MIRI, the VV 114E nucleus resolves primarily into bright NE and SW cores separated by 630 pc. This nucleus comprises 45% of the 15um light of VV 114, with the NE and SW cores having IR luminosities, L_ IR (8-1000um) ~ 8+/-0.8x10^10 L_sun and ~ 5+/-0.5x10^10 L_sun, respectively, and IR densities, Sigma_IR >~ 2+/-0.2x10^13 L_sun / kpc^2 and >~ 7+/-0.7x10^12 L_sun / kpc^2, respectively -- in the range of Sigma_IR for the Orion star-forming core and the nuclei of Arp 220. The NE core, previously speculated to have an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN), has starburst-like mid-IR colors. In contrast, the VV 114E SW has AGN-like colors. Approximately 40 star-forming knots with L_IR ~ 0.02-5x10^10 L_sun are identified, 25% of which have no optical counterpart. Finally, diffuse emission accounts for 40-60% of the mid-IR emission. Mostly notably, filamentary Poly-cyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission stochastically excited by UV and optical photons accounts for half of the 7.7um light of VV 114. We have used the Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to obtain the first spatially resolved, mid-infrared (mid-IR) images of IIZw096, a merging luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) at $z = 0.036$. Previous observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope suggested that the vast majority of the total IR luminosity (LIR) of the system originated from a small region outside of the two merging nuclei. New observations with JWST/MIRI now allow an accurate measurement of the location and luminosity density of the source that is responsible for the bulk of the IR emission. We estimate that 40-70% of the IR bolometric luminosity, or $3-5 \times 10^{11}\,{\rm{L_{\odot}}}$, arises from a source no larger than 175pc in radius, suggesting a luminosity density of at least $3-5 \times 10^{12} \, {\rm{L_{\odot} \, kpc^{-2}}}$. In addition, we detect 11 other star forming sources, five of which were previously unknown. The MIRI F1500W/F560W colors of most of these sources, including the source responsible for the bulk of the far-IR emission, are much redder than the nuclei of local LIRGs. We present the results of a stacking analysis performed on Spitzer/Infrared Spectrograph high-resolution mid-infrared spectra of luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) in the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS). By binning on mid-infrared active galactic nucleus (AGN) fraction and stacking spectra, we detect bright emission lines [Ne II] and [Ne III], which trace star formation, and fainter emission lines [Ne V] and [O IV], which trace AGN activity, throughout the sample. We find the [Ne II] luminosity is fairly constant across all AGN fraction bins, while the [O IV] and [Ne V] luminosities increase by over an order of magnitude. Our measured average line ratios, [Ne V]/[Ne II] and [O IV]/[Ne II], at low AGN fraction are similar to H II galaxies while the line ratios at high AGN fraction are similar to LINERs and Seyferts. We decompose the [O IV] luminosity into star-formation and AGN components by fitting the [O IV] luminosity as a function of the [Ne II] luminosity and the mid-infrared AGN fraction. The [O IV] luminosity in LIRGs is dominated by star formation for mid-infrared AGN fractions $\lesssim0.3$. With the corrected [O IV] luminosity, we calculate black hole accretion rates ranging from $10^{-5}$ M$_{\odot}$/yr at low AGN fractions to 0.2 M$_{\odot}$/yr at the highest AGN fractions. We find that using the [O IV] luminosity, without correcting for star formation, can lead to an overestimate of the BHAR by up to a factor of 30 in starburst dominated LIRGs. Finally, we show the BHAR/SFR ratio increases by more than three orders of magnitude as a function of mid-infrared AGN fraction in LIRGs., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures. Accepted to ApJ

We report on VLT/FORS2 imaging polarimetry observations in the $R_{\rm special}$ band of WISE J011601.41-050504.0 (W0116-0505), a heavily obscured hyper-luminous quasar at $z=3.173$ classified as a Hot, Dust-Obscured Galaxy (Hot DOG) based on its mid-IR colors. Recently, Assef et al. (2020) identified W0116-0505 as having excess rest-frame optical/UV emission, and concluded this excess emission is most likely scattered light from the heavily obscured AGN. We find that the broad-band rest-frame UV flux is strongly linearly polarized (10.8$\pm$1.9\%, with a polarization angle of 74$\pm$9~deg), confirming this conclusion. We analyze these observations in the context of a simple model based on scattering either by free electrons or by optically thin dust, assuming a classical dust torus with polar openings. Both can replicate the degree of polarization and the luminosity of the scattered component for a range of geometries and column densities, but we argue that optically thin dust in the ISM is the more likely scenario. We also explore the possibility that the scattering medium corresponds to an outflow recently identified for W0116-0505. This is a feasible option if the outflow component is bi-conical with most of the scattering occurring at the base of the receding outflow. In this scenario the quasar would still be obscured even if viewed face on, but might appear as a reddened type 1 quasar once the outflow has expanded. We discuss a possible connection between blue-excess Hot DOGs, extremely red quasars (ERQs), reddened type 1 quasars, and unreddened quasars that depends on a combination of evolution and viewing geometry., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables. The UV bump is a broad absorption feature centered at 2175{\AA} that is seen in the attenuation/extinction curve of some galaxies, but its origin is not well known. Here, we use a sample of 86 star-forming galaxies at z=1.7-2.7 with deep rest-frame UV spectroscopy from the MUSE HUDF Survey to study the connection between the strength of the observed UV 2175{\AA} bump and the Spitzer/MIPS 24 micron photometry, which at the redshift range of our sample probes mid-IR polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission at ~6-8 micron. The sample has robust spectroscopic redshifts and consists of typical main-sequence galaxies with a wide range in stellar mass (log(Mstar/Msun) ~ 8.5-10.7) and star formation rates (SFRs; SFR ~ 1-100 Msun/yr). Galaxies with MIPS detections have strong UV bumps, except for those with mass-weighted ages younger than ~150 Myr. We find that the UV bump amplitude does not change with SFR at fixed stellar mass but increases with mass at fixed SFR. The UV bump amplitude and the PAH strength (defined as mid-IR emission normalized by SFR) are highly correlated and both also correlate strongly with stellar mass. We interpret these correlations as the result of the mass-metallicity relationship, such that at low metallicities PAH emission is weak due to a lower abundance of PAH molecules. The weak or complete absence of the 2175{\AA} bump feature on top of the underlying smooth attenuation curve at low mass/metallicities is then expected if the PAH carriers are the main source of the additional UV absorption., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in mnras

We study the ionization and excitation structure of the interstellar medium in the late-stage gas-rich galaxy merger NGC 6240 using a suite of emission line maps at $\sim$25 pc resolution from the Hubble Space Telescope, Keck NIRC2 with Adaptive Optics, and ALMA. NGC 6240 hosts a superwind driven by intense star formation and/or one or both of two active nuclei; the outflows produce bubbles and filaments seen in shock tracers from warm molecular gas (H$_2$ 2.12$\mu$m) to optical ionized gas ([O III], [N II], [S II], [O I]) and hot plasma (Fe XXV). In the most distinct bubble, we see a clear shock front traced by high [O III]/H$\beta$ and [O III]/[O I]. Cool molecular gas (CO(2-1)) is only present near the base of the bubble, towards the nuclei launching the outflow. We interpret the lack of molecular gas outside the bubble to mean that the shock front is not responsible for dissociating molecular gas, and conclude that the molecular clouds are partly shielded and either entrained briefly in the outflow, or left undisturbed while the hot wind flows around them. Elsewhere in the galaxy, shock-excited H$_2$ extends at least $\sim$4 kpc from the nuclei, tracing molecular gas even warmer than that between the nuclei, where the two galaxies' interstellar media are colliding. A ridgeline of high [O III]/H$\beta$ emission along the eastern arm aligns with the south nucleus' stellar disk minor axis; optical integral field spectroscopy from WiFeS suggests this highly ionized gas is centered at systemic velocity and likely photoionized by direct line-of-sight to the south AGN., Comment: 27 pages, 18 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the results of a Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 near-UV and ACS/WFC optical study into the star cluster populations of 10 luminous and ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs) in the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS). Through integrated broadband photometry we have derived ages, masses, and extinctions for a total of 1027 star clusters in galaxies with $d_{L} <$ 110 Mpc in order to avoid issues related to cluster blending. The measured cluster age distribution slope of $dN/d\tau \propto \tau^{-0.5 +/- 0.2}$ is steeper than what has been observed in lower-luminosity star-forming galaxies. Further, differences in the slope of the observed cluster age distribution between inner- ($dN/d\tau \propto \tau^{-1.07 +/- 0.12}$) and outer-disk ($dN/d\tau \propto \tau^{-0.37 +/- 0.09}$) star clusters provides evidence of mass-dependent cluster destruction in the central regions of LIRGs driven primarily by the combined effect of strong tidal shocks and encounters with massive GMCs. Excluding the nuclear ring surrounding the Seyfert 1 nucleus in NGC 7469, the derived cluster mass function (CMF: $dN/dM \propto M^{\alpha}$) has marginal evidence for a truncation in the power-law (PL) at $M_{t} \sim 2$x$10^{6} M_{\odot}$ for our three most cluster-rich galaxies, which are all classified as early-stage mergers. Finally, we find evidence of a flattening of the CMF slope of $dN/dM \propto M^{-1.42 \pm 0.1}$ for clusters in late-stage mergers relative to early-stage ($\alpha = -1.65 \pm 0.02$), which we attribute to an increase in the formation of massive clusters over the course of the interaction., Comment: 70 pages, 21 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Galactic bars are frequent in disk galaxies and they may support the transfer of matter towards the central engine of active nuclei. The barred galaxy NGC 1097 has magnetic forces controlling the gas flow at several kpc scales, which suggest that magnetic fields (B-fields) are dynamically important along the bar and nuclear ring. However, the effect of the B-field on the gas flows in the central kpc scale has not been characterized. Using thermal polarized emission at $89$ $\mu$m with HAWC+/SOFIA, here, we measure that the polarized flux is spatially located at the contact regions of the outer-bar with the starburst ring. The linear polarization decomposition analysis shows that the $89$ $\mu$m and radio ($3.5$ and $6.2$ cm) polarization traces two different modes, $m$, of the B-field: a constant B-field orientation and dominated by $m=0$ at $89$ $\mu$m, and a spiral B-field dominated by $m=2$ at radio. We show that the B-field at 89 $\mu$m is concentrated in the warmest region of a shock driven by the galactic-bar dynamics in the contact regions between the outer-bar with the starburst ring. Radio polarization traces a superposition of the spiral B-field outside and within the starburst ring. According to Faraday rotation measures between $3.5$ and $6.2$ cm, the radial component of the B-field along the contact regions points toward the galaxy's center on both sides. The recent availability of high-resolution far-infrared (FIR) polarization observations of galaxies using HAWC+/SOFIA has facilitated studies of extragalactic magnetic fields in the cold and dense molecular disks.We investigate if any significant structural differences are detectable in the kpc-scale magnetic field of the grand design face-on spiral galaxy M51 when traced within the diffuse (radio) and the dense and cold (FIR) interstellar medium (ISM). Our analysis reveals a complex scenario where radio and FIR polarization observations do not necessarily trace the same magnetic field structure. We find that the magnetic field in the arms is wrapped tighter at 154um than at 3 and 6 cm; statistically significant lower values for the magnetic pitch angle are measured at FIR in the outskirts (R > 7 kpc) of the galaxy. This difference is not detected in the interarm region. We find strong correlations of the polarization fraction and total intensity at FIR and radio with the gas column density and 12CO(1-0) velocity dispersion. We conclude that the arms show a relative increase of small-scale turbulent B-fields at regions with increasing column density and dispersion velocities of the molecular gas. No correlations are found with HI neutral gas. The star formation rate shows a clear correlation with the radio polarized intensity, which is not found in FIR, pointing to a small-scale dynamo-driven B-field amplification scenario. This work shows that multi-wavelength polarization observations are key to disentangling the interlocked relation between star formation, magnetic fields, and gas kinematics in the multi-phase ISM., Comment: 35 pages, 25 figures, 5 tables. Hot, dust-obscured galaxies (Hot DOGs) are a population of hyper-luminous obscured quasars identified by WISE. We present ALMA observations of the [CII] fine-structure line and underlying dust continuum emission in a sample of seven of the most extremely luminous (EL; L$_{\rm bol}$ $\ge$ 10$^{14}$ L$_\odot$) Hot DOGs, at redshifts z ~ 3.0-4.6. The [CII] line is robustly detected in four objects, tentatively in one, and likely red-shifted out of the spectral window in the remaining two based on additional data. On average, [CII] is red-shifted by ~ 780 km/s from rest-frame ultraviolet emission lines. EL Hot DOGs exhibit consistently very high ionized gas surface densities, with $\Sigma_{\rm [CII]}$ ~ 1-2 x 10$^{9}$ L$_\odot$ kpc$^{-2}$; as high as the most extreme cases seen in other high-redshift quasars. As a population, EL Hot DOG hosts seem to be roughly centered on the main-sequence of star forming galaxies, but the uncertainties are substantial and individual sources can fall above and below. The average, intrinsic [CII] and dust continuum sizes (FWHMs) are ~ 2.1 kpc and ~ 1.6 kpc, respectively, with a very narrow range of line-to-continuum size ratios, 1.61 $\pm$ 0.10, suggesting they could be linearly proportional. The [CII] velocity fields of EL Hot DOGs are diverse: from barely rotating structures, to resolved hosts with ordered, circular motions, to complex, disturbed systems that are likely the result of ongoing mergers. In contrast, all sources display large line-velocity dispersions, FWHM $\gtrsim$ 500 km/s, which on average are larger than optically and IR-selected quasars at similar or higher redshifts. We argue that one possible hypothesis for the lack of a common velocity structure, the systematically large dispersion of the ionized gas, and the presence of nearby companion galaxies may be that, rather than a single event, the EL Hot DOG phase could be recurrent., Comment: 31 pages, 13 figures. The ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (ASPECS) Band 6 scan (212-272 GHz) covers potential [CII] emission in galaxies at $6\leq z \leq8$ throughout a 2.9 arcmin$^2$ area. By selecting on known Lyman-$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) and photometric dropout galaxies in the field, we perform targeted searches down to a 5$\sigma$ [CII] luminosity depth $L_{\mathrm{[CII]}}\sim2.0\times10^8$ L$_{\odot}$, corresponding roughly to star formation rates (SFRs) of $10$-$20$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ when applying a locally calibrated conversion for star-forming galaxies, yielding zero detections. While the majority of galaxies in this sample are characterized by lower SFRs, the resulting upper limits on [CII] luminosity in these sources are consistent with the current literature sample of targeted ALMA observations of $z=6$-$7$ LAEs and Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs), as well as the locally calibrated relations between $L_{\mathrm{[CII]}}$ and SFR -- with the exception of a single [CII]-deficient, UV luminous LBG. We also perform a blind search for [CII]-bright galaxies that may have been missed by optical selections, resulting in an upper limit on the cumulative number density of [CII] sources with $L_{\mathrm{[CII]}}>2.0\times10^8$ L$_{\odot}$ ($5\sigma $) to be less than $1.8\times10^{-4}$ Mpc$^{-3}$ (90% confidence level). At this luminosity depth and volume coverage, we present an observed evolution of the [CII] luminosity function from $z=6$-$8$ to $z\sim0$ by comparing the ASPECS measurement to literature results at lower redshift., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Star formation in galaxies is regulated by the heating and cooling in the interstellar medium. In particular, the processing of molecular gas into stars will depend strongly on the ratio of gas heating to gas cooling in the neutral gas around sites of recent star-formation. In this work, we combine mid-infrared (mid-IR) observations of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), the dominant heating mechanism of gas in the interstellar medium (ISM), with [C II], [O I], and [Si II] fine-structure emission, the strongest cooling channels in dense, neutral gas. The ratio of IR cooling line emission to PAH emission measures the photoelectric efficiency, a property of the ISM which dictates how much energy carried by ultraviolet photons gets transferred into the gas. We find that star-forming, IR luminous galaxies in the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) with high IR surface densities have low photoelectric efficiencies. These systems also have, on average, higher ratios of radiation field strength to gas densities, and larger average dust grain size distributions. The data support a scenario in which the most compact galaxies have more young star-forming regions per unit area, which exhibit less efficient gas heating. These conditions may be more common at high-z, and may help explain the higher star-formation rates at cosmic noon. We present rest-frame optical spectroscopic observations of 24 Hot Dust-Obscured Galaxies (Hot DOGs) at redshifts 1.7-4.6 with KECK/NIRES. Our targets are selected based on their extreme red colors to be the highest luminosity sources from the WISE infrared survey. In 20 sources with well-detected emission we fit the key [O III], H$\beta$, H$\alpha$, [N II], and [S II] diagnostic lines to constrain physical conditions. Of the 17 targets with a clear detection of the [O III]$\rm \lambda$5007A emission line, 15 display broad blueshifted and asymmetric line profiles, with widths ranging from 1000 to 8000 $\rm km\ s^{-1}$ and blueshifts up to 3000 $\rm km\ s^{-1}$. These kinematics provide strong evidence for the presence of massive ionized outflows of up to $8000\ \rm M_\odot\ yr^{-1}$, with a median of $150\ \rm M_\odot\ yr^{-1}$. As many as eight sources show optical emission line ratios consistent with vigorous star formation. Balmer line star-formation rates, uncorrected for reddening, range from 30--1300 $\rm M_\odot\ yr^{-1}$, with a median of $50\ \rm M_\odot\ yr^{-1}$. Estimates of the SFR from SED fitting of mid and far-infrared photometry suggest significantly higher values. We estimate the central black hole masses to be of order $10^{8-10}\rm\ M_\odot$, assuming the present-day $\rm M_{BH}-\sigma_*$ relation. The bolometric luminosities and the estimated masses of the central black holes of these galaxies suggest that many of the AGN-dominated Hot DOGs are accreting at or above their Eddington limit. We present a CO and atomic fine-structure line luminosity function analysis using the ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (ASPECS). ASPECS consists of two spatially-overlapping mosaics that cover the entire ALMA 3mm and 1.2mm bands. We combine the results of a line candidate search of the 1.2mm data cube with those previously obtained from the 3mm cube. Our analysis shows that $\sim$80% of the line flux observed at 3mm arises from CO(2-1) or CO(3-2) emitters at $z$=1-3 (`cosmic noon'). At 1.2mm, more than half of the line flux arises from intermediate-J CO transitions ($J_{\rm up}$=3-6); $\sim12$% from neutral carbon lines; and $< 1$% from singly-ionized carbon, [CII]. This implies that future [CII] intensity mapping surveys in the epoch of reionization will need to account for a highly significant CO foreground. The CO luminosity functions probed at 1.2mm show a decrease in the number density at a given line luminosity (in units of $L'$) at increasing $J_{\rm up}$ and redshift. Comparisons between the CO luminosity functions for different CO transitions at a fixed redshift reveal sub-thermal conditions on average in galaxies up to $z\sim 4$. In addition, the comparison of the CO luminosity functions for the same transition at different redshifts reveals that the evolution is not driven by excitation. The cosmic density of molecular gas in galaxies, $\rho_{\rm H2}$, shows a redshift evolution with an increase from high redshift up to $z\sim1.5$ followed by a factor $\sim 6$ drop down to the present day. This is in qualitative agreement with the evolution of the cosmic star-formation rate density, suggesting that the molecular gas depletion time is approximately constant with redshift, after averaging over the star-forming galaxy population., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables. We report molecular gas mass estimates obtained from a stacking analysis of CO line emission in the ALMA Spectroscopic Survey (ASPECS) using the spectroscopic redshifts from the optical integral field spectroscopic survey by the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) of the {\it Hubble} Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). Stacking was performed on subsets of the sample of galaxies classified by their stellar mass and position relative to the main-sequence relation (on, above, below). Among all the CO emission lines, from \cotwoone to CO(6-5), with redshifts accessible via the ASPECS Band~3 and the MUSE data, \cotwoone provides the strongest constraints on the molecular gas content. We detect \cotwoone emission in galaxies down to stellar masses of $\log{(M_*/M_\odot)}=10.0$. Below this stellar mass, we present a new constraint on the molecular gas content of $z\sim1.5$ main-sequence galaxies by stacking based on the MUSE detections. We find that the molecular gas mass of main-sequence galaxies continuously decreases with stellar mass down to $\log{(M_*/M_\odot)}\approx9.0$. Assuming a metallicity-based CO--to--$\rm H_2$ conversion factor, the molecular gas-to-stellar mass ratio from $\log{(M_*/M_\odot)}\sim9.0$ to $\sim10.0$ does not seem to decrease as fast as for $\log{(M_*/M_\odot)}>10.0$, which is in line with simulations and studies at lower redshift. The inferred molecular gas density $\rho{\rm (H_2)}=(0.49\pm0.09)\times10^8\,{\rm M_\odot\,Mpc^{-3}}$ of MUSE-selected galaxies at $z\sim1.5$ is comparable with the one derived in the HUDF with a different CO selection. Using the MUSE data we recover most of the CO emission in our deep ALMA observations through stacking, demonstrating the synergy between volumetric surveys obtained at different wavebands., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables accepted for publication in ApJ

We investigate the CO excitation and interstellar medium (ISM) conditions in a cold gas mass-selected sample of 22 star-forming galaxies at $z=0.46-3.60$, observed as part of the ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (ASPECS). Combined with VLA follow-up observations, we detect a total of 34 CO $J \rightarrow J-1$ transitions with $J=1$ up to $8$ (and an additional 21 upper limits, up to $J=10$) and six [C I] ${^3P}_1 \rightarrow {^3P}_0$ and ${^3P}_2 \rightarrow {^3P}_1$ transitions (and 12 upper limits). The CO(2-1) and CO(3-2)-selected galaxies, at $z=1.2$ and $2.5$, respectively, exhibit a range in excitation in their mid-$J=4,5$ and high-$J=7,8$ lines, on average lower than ($L_{\rm IR}$-brighter) BzK-color- and submillimeter-selected galaxies at similar redshifts. The former implies that a warm ISM component is not necessarily prevalent in gas mass-selected galaxies at $z=1.2$. We use stacking and Large Velocity Gradient models to measure and predict the average CO ladders at $z<2$ and $z\geq2$, finding $r_{21}=0.75 \pm 0.11$ and $r_{31}=0.77 \pm 0.14$, respectively. From the models, we infer that the galaxies at $z\geq2$ have intrinsically higher excitation than those at $z<2$. This fits a picture in which the global excitation is driven by an increase in the star formation rate surface density of galaxies with redshift. We derive a neutral atomic carbon abundance of $(1.9 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-5}$, comparable to the Milky Way and main-sequence galaxies at similar redshifts, and fairly high densities ($\geq 10^4$ cm$^{-3}$), consistent with the low-$J$ CO excitation. Our results imply a decrease in the cosmic molecular gas mass density at $z\geq2$ compared to previous ASPECS measurements., Comment: 37 pages, 15 figures, 6 tables. We compare the extent of the dust, molecular gas and stars in three star-forming galaxies, at $z= 1.4, 1.6$ and $2.7$, selected from the Hubble Ultra Deep Field based on their bright CO and dust-continuum emission as well as their large rest-frame optical sizes. The galaxies have high stellar masses, $\mathrm{M}_*>10^{11}\mathrm{M}_\odot$, and reside on, or slightly below, the main sequence of star-forming galaxies at their respective redshifts. We probe the dust and molecular gas using subarcsecond Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of the 1.3 mm continuum and CO line emission, respectively, and probe the stellar distribution using \emph{Hubble Space Telescope} observations at 1.6 \textmu m. We find that for all three galaxies the CO emission appears $\gtrsim 30\%$ more compact than the stellar emission. For the $z= 1.4$ and $2.7$ galaxies, the dust emission is also more compact, by $\gtrsim 50\%$, than the stellar emission, whereas for the $z=1.6$ galaxy, the dust and stellar emission have similar spatial extents. This similar spatial extent is consistent with observations of local disk galaxies. However, most high redshift observations show more compact dust emission, likely due to the ubiquity of central starbursts at high redshift and the limited sensitivity of many of these observations. Using the CO emission line, we also investigate the kinematics of the cold interstellar medium in the galaxies, and find that all three have kinematics consistent with a rotation-dominated disk.

We present a characterization of the physical properties of a sample of 35 securely-detected, dusty galaxies in the deep ALMA 1.2-mm image obtained as part of the ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the {\it Hubble} Ultra Deep Field (ASPECS) Large Program. This sample is complemented by 26 additional sources identified via an optical/infrared source positional prior. Using their well-characterized spectral energy distributions, we derive median stellar masses and star formation rates (SFR) of $4.8\times10^{10}~M_\odot$ and 30 $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, and interquartile ranges of $(2.4-11.7)\times10^{10}~M_\odot$ and $20-50~M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, respectively. We derive a median spectroscopic redshift of 1.8 with an interquartile range $1.1-2.6$, significantly lower than submillimeter galaxies detected in shallower, wide-field surveys. We find that 59\%$\pm$13\%, 6\%$\pm$4\%, and 34\%$\pm$9\% of our sources are within, above and below $\pm0.4$ dex from the SFR-stellar mass relation or main-sequence (MS), respectively. The ASPECS galaxies closely follow the SFR-molecular gas mass relation and other previously established scaling relations, confirming a factor of five increase of the gas-to-stellar mass ratio from $z=0.5$ to $z=2.5$ and a mild evolution of the gas depletion timescales with a typical value of 0.7 Gyr at $z=1-3$. ASPECS galaxies located significantly below the MS, a poorly exploited parameter space, have low gas-to-stellar-mass ratios of $\sim0.1-0.2$ and long depletion timescales $>1$ Gyr. Galaxies along the MS dominate the cosmic density of molecular gas at all redshifts. Systems above the main sequence have an increasing contribution to the total gas reservoirs from $z<1$ to $z=2.5$, while the opposite is found for galaxies below the MS., Comment: ApJ published on Sept. 24, 2020. Using the NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), we report six detections of CO(J=1-0) emission and one upper limit in z=2-3 galaxies originally detected in higher-J CO emission in the Atacama Large submillimeter/Millimeter Array (ALMA) Spectroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (ASPECS). From the CO(J=1-0) line strengths, we measure total cold molecular gas masses of M_gas = 2.4-11.6 x 10^10 (alpha_CO/3.6) Msun. We also measure a median CO(J=3-2) to CO(J=1-0) line brightness temperature ratio of r_31 = 0.84 +/- 0.26, and a CO(J=7-6) to CO(J=1-0) ratio range of r_71 <0.05 to 0.17. These results suggest that CO(J=3-2) selected galaxies may have a higher CO line excitation on average than CO(J=1-0) selected galaxies, based on the limited, currently available samples from the ASPECS and VLA CO Luminosity Density at High Redshift (COLDz) surveys. This implies that previous estimates of the cosmic density of cold gas in galaxies based on CO(J=3-2) measurements should be revised down by a factor of ~=2 on average based on assumptions regarding CO excitation alone. Using the deepest 1.2 mm continuum map to date in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field obtained as part of the ALMA Spectroscopic Survey (ASPECS) large program, we measure the cosmic density of dust and implied gas (H$_{2}+$H I) mass in galaxies as a function of look-back time. We do so by stacking the contribution from all $H$-band selected galaxies above a given stellar mass in distinct redshift bins, $\rho_{\rm dust}(M_\ast>M,z)$ and $\rho_{\rm gas}(M_\ast>M,z)$. At all redshifts, $\rho_{\rm dust}(M_\ast>M,z)$ and $\rho_{\rm gas}(M_\ast>M,z)$ grow rapidly as $M$ decreases down to $10^{10}\,M_\odot$, but this growth slows down towards lower stellar masses. This flattening implies that at our stellar mass-completeness limits ($10^8\,M_\odot$ and $10^{8.9}\,M_\odot$ at $z\sim0.4$ and $z\sim3$), both quantities converge towards the total cosmic dust and gas mass densities in galaxies. The cosmic dust and gas mass densities increase at early cosmic time, peak around $z\sim2$, and decrease by a factor $\sim4$ and 7, compared to the density of dust and molecular gas in the local universe, respectively. The contribution of quiescent galaxies -- i.e., with little on-going star-formation -- to the cosmic dust and gas mass densities is minor ($\lesssim10\%$). The redshift evolution of the cosmic gas mass density resembles that of the star-formation rate density, as previously found by CO-based measurements. This confirms that galaxies have relatively constant star-formation efficiencies (within a factor $\sim2$) across cosmic time. Our results also imply that by $z\sim0$, a large fraction ($\sim90\%$) of dust formed in galaxies across cosmic time has been destroyed or ejected to the intergalactic medium., Comment: 32 pages, 13 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Star formation depends critically on cooling mechanisms in the interstellar medium (ISM); however, thermal properties of gas in galaxies at the peak epoch of star formation (z ~ 2) remain poorly understood. A limiting factor in understanding the multiphase ISM is the lack of multiple tracers detected in the same galaxies, such as Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission, a tracer of a critical photoelectric heating mechanism in interstellar gas, and [C II] 158{\mu}m fine-structure emission, a principal coolant. We present ALMA Band 9 observations targeting [C II] in six z ~ 2 star-forming galaxies with strong Spitzer IRS detections of PAH emission. All six galaxies are detected in dust continuum and marginally resolved. We compare the properties of PAH and [C II] emission, and constrain their relationship as a function of total infrared luminosity (LIR) and IR surface density. [C II] emission is detected in one galaxy at high signal-to-noise (34{\sigma}), and we place a secure upper limit on a second source. The rest of our sample are not detected in [C II] likely due to redshift uncertainties and narrow ALMA bandpass windows. Our results are consistent with the deficit in [C II]/LIR and PAH/LIR observed in the literature. However, the ratio of [C II] to PAH emission at z ~ 2 is possibly much lower than what is observed in nearby dusty star-forming galaxies. This could be the result of enhanced cooling via [O I] at high-z, hotter gas and dust temperatures, and/or a reduction in the photoelectric efficiency, in which the coupling between interstellar radiation and gas heating is diminished., Comment: Accepted to The Astrophysical Journal, 22 pages, 11 figures

We present the results from the 1.2 mm continuum image obtained as part of the ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (ASPECS). The 1.2 mm continuum image has a size of 2.9 (4.2) arcmin$^2$ within a primary beam response of 50% (10%) and a rms value of $9.3\thinspace{\rm\mu Jy\thinspace beam^{-1}}$. We detect 35 sources at high significance (Fidelity $\geq0.5$), 32 of these have well characterized near-infrared HST counterparts. We estimate the 1.2 mm number counts to flux levels of $<30\thinspace{\rm\mu Jy}$ in two different ways: we first use the detected sources to constrain the number counts and find a significant flattening of the counts below $S_\nu \sim 0.1$ mJy. In a second approach, we constrain the number counts by using a probability of deflection statistics (P(D)) analysis. For this latter approach, we describe new methods to accurately measure the noise in interferometric imaging (employing jack-knifing in the cube and in the visibility plane). This independent measurement confirms the flattening of the number counts. Our analysis of the differential number counts shows that we are detecting $\sim$93% ($\sim$100% if we include the lower fidelity detections) of the total continuum dust emission associated to galaxies in the HUDF. The ancillary data allows us to study the dependence of the 1.2 mm number counts on redshift ($z=0-4$), galaxy dust mass (${\rm M}_{\rm dust}=10^{7}-10^{9}{\rm M}_{\odot}$), stellar mass (${\rm M}_{*}=10^{9}-10^{12}{\rm M}_{\odot}$), and star-formation rate (${\rm SFR}=1-1000\thinspace{\rm M}_{\odot}\thinspace{\rm yr^{-1}}$). We present a new semi-empirical model for the dust continuum number counts of galaxies at 1.1 millimeter and 850 \micron. Our approach couples an observationally motivated model for the stellar mass and SFR distribution of galaxies with empirical scaling relations to predict the dust continuum flux density of these galaxies. Without a need to tweak the IMF, the model reproduces the currently available observations of the 1.1 millimeter and 850 \micron number counts, including the observed flattening in the 1.1 millimeter number counts below 0.3 mJy \citep{Gonzalez2019numbercounts} and the number counts in discrete bins of different galaxy properties. Predictions of our work include : (1) the galaxies that dominate the number counts at flux densities below 1 mJy (3 mJy) at 1.1 millimeter (850 $\mu$m) have redshifts between $z=1$ and $z=2$, stellar masses of $\sim 5\times10^{10}~\rm{M}_\odot$, and dust masses of $\sim 10^{8}~\rm{M}_\odot$; (2) the flattening in the observed 1.1 millimeter number counts corresponds to the knee of the 1.1 millimeter luminosity function. A similar flattening is predicted for the number counts at 850 $\mu$m; (3) the model reproduces the redshift distribution of current 1.1 millimeter detections; (4) to efficiently detect large numbers of galaxies through their dust continuum, future surveys should scan large areas once reaching a 1.1 millimeter flux density of 0.1 mJy rather than integrating to fainter fluxes. Our modeling framework also suggests that the amount of information on galaxy physics that can be extracted from the 1.1 millimeter and 850 $\mu$m number counts is almost exhausted., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

In this paper we present our imaging observations on the CO(7-6) line and its underlying continuum emission of the young submillimeter galaxy LESS 073 at redshift 4.755, using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). At the achieved resolution of $\sim$$1^{\prime\prime}.2\times0^{\prime\prime}.9$ ($8\times6$~kpc$^2$), the CO(7-6) emission is largely unresolved (with a deconvolved size of $1^{\prime\prime}.1(\pm0^{\prime\prime}.5) \times 0^{\prime\prime}.9(\pm0^{\prime\prime}.8)$), and the continuum emission is totally unresolved. The CO(7-6) line emission has an integrated flux of $0.86\pm0.08$~Jy km/s, and a line width of $343\pm40$ km/s. The continuum emission has a flux density of 0.51 mJy. By fitting the observed far-infrared (FIR) spectral energy distribution of LESS 073 with a single-temperature modified blackbody function, we obtained a dust temperature $T_{\rm dust}=57.6\pm3.5$ K, 60-to-100 $\mu$m flux density ratio $f_{60}/f_{100}=0.86\pm0.08$, and total infrared luminosity $L_{\rm IR}=(5.8\pm0.9) \times 10^{12}~L_\odot$. The SED-fit-based $f_{60}/f_{100}$ is consistent with those estimated from various line ratios as advocated by our earlier work, indicating that those proposed line-ratio-based method can be used to practically derive $f_{60}/f_{100}$ for high-$z$ sources. The total molecular gas mass of LESS 073 is $(3.3\pm1.7) \times10^{10}~M_\odot$, and the inferred gas depletion time is about 43 Myr., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present VLT/XSHOOTER rest-frame UV-optical spectra of 10 Hot Dust-Obscured Galaxies (Hot DOGs) at $z\sim2$ to investigate AGN diagnostics and to assess the presence and effect of ionized gas outflows. Most Hot DOGs in this sample are narrow-line dominated AGN (type 1.8 or higher), and have higher Balmer decrements than typical type 2 quasars. Almost all (8/9) sources show evidence for ionized gas outflows in the form of broad and blueshifted [O III] profiles, and some sources have such profiles in H$\alpha$ (5/7) or [O II] (3/6). Combined with the literature, these results support additional sources of obscuration beyond the simple torus invoked by AGN unification models. Outflow rates derived from the broad [O III] line ($\rm \gtrsim10^{3}\,M_{\odot}\,yr^{-1}$) are greater than the black hole accretion and star formation rates, with feedback efficiencies ($\sim0.1-1\%$) consistent with negative feedback to the host galaxy's star formation in merger-driven quasar activity scenarios. We find the broad emission lines in luminous, obscured quasars are often better explained by outflows within the narrow line region, and caution that black hole mass estimates for such sources in the literature may have substantial uncertainty. Regardless, we find lower bounds on the Eddington ratio for Hot DOGs near unity., Comment: 20 pages, accepted to ApJ, minor corrections (typos and references) in section 4.4

We use the results from the ALMA large program ASPECS, the spectroscopic survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF), to constrain CO luminosity functions of galaxies and the resulting redshift evolution of $\rho$(H$_2$). The broad frequency range covered enables us to identify CO emission lines of different rotational transitions in the HUDF at $z>1$. We find strong evidence that the CO luminosity function evolves with redshift, with the knee of the CO luminosity function decreasing in luminosity by an order of magnitude from $\sim$2 to the local universe. Based on Schechter fits, we estimate that our observations recover the majority (up to $\sim$90%, depending on the assumptions on the faint end) of the total cosmic CO luminosity at $z$=1.0-3.1. After correcting for CO excitation, and adopting a Galactic CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor, we constrain the evolution of the cosmic molecular gas density $\rho$(H$_2$): this cosmic gas density peaks at $z\sim1.5$ and drops by factor of $6.5_{-1.4}^{+1.8}$ to the value measured locally. The observed evolution in $\rho$(H$_2$) therefore closely matches the evolution of the cosmic star formation rate density $\rho_{\rm SFR}$. We verify the robustness of our result with respect to assumptions on source inclusion and/or CO excitation. As the cosmic star formation history can be expressed as the product of the star formation efficiency and the cosmic density of molecular gas, the similar evolution of $\rho$(H$_2$) and $\rho_{\rm SFR}$ leaves only little room for a significant evolution of the average star formation efficiency in galaxies since $z\sim 3$ (85% of cosmic history)., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures. We analyze the interstellar medium properties of a sample of sixteen bright CO line emitting galaxies identified in the ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (ASPECS) Large Program. This CO$-$selected galaxy sample is complemented by a couple of additional CO line emitters in the UDF that are identified based on their MUSE optical spectroscopic redshifts. The ASPECS CO$-$selected galaxies cover a larger range of star-formation rates and stellar masses compared to literature CO emitting galaxies at $z>1$ for which scaling relations have been established previously. Most of ASPECS CO-selected galaxies follow these established relations in terms of gas depletion timescales and gas fractions as a function of redshift, as well as the star-formation rate-stellar mass relation (`galaxy main sequence'). However, we find that $\sim30\%$ of the galaxies (5 out of 16) are offset from the galaxy main sequence at their respective redshift, with $\sim12\%$ (2 out of 16) falling below this relationship. Some CO-rich galaxies exhibit low star-formation rates, and yet show substantial molecular gas reservoirs, yielding long gas depletion timescales. Capitalizing on the well-defined cosmic volume probed by our observations, we measure the contribution of galaxies above, below, and on the galaxy main sequence to the total cosmic molecular gas density at different lookback times. We conclude that main sequence galaxies are the largest contributor to the molecular gas density at any redshift probed by our observations (z$\sim$1$-$3). The respective contribution by starburst galaxies above the main sequence decreases from z$\sim$2.5 to z$\sim$1, whereas we find tentative evidence for an increased contribution to the cosmic molecular gas density from the passive galaxies below the main sequence., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ.
