We investigate a terahertz (THz) gas sensing platform based on all-dielectric metasurfaces that support quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BIC) with both electric and magnetic dipole resonances. The structure is designed to achieve the first Kerker condition, minimizing backscattering and maximizing light-matter interaction, which significantly enhances the sensitivity of the sensor. By optimizing structural parameters, this metasurface selectively resonates at characteristic absorption frequencies of target gases, facilitating detection even at low concentrations. We validate the approach using two gases with strong but distinct THz absorption profiles: hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and sulfur dioxide (SO2). Furthermore, the free-standing design maximizes gas interaction on both sides of the metasurface, eliminating substrate-induced losses and enabling a reduced physical footprint. Our findings indicate that this metasurface outperforms standard THz sensing approaches in terms of compactness and sensitivity per path length unit, obtaining the same detection threshold as sensing in free space with a path length between 2 and 3 orders of magnitude shorter, underscoring its potential for industrial applications where the available space for sensing can be limited., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Reconfigurable metasurfaces are potent platforms to control the propagation properties of light dynamically. Among different reconfiguration mechanisms available at optical frequencies, using non-volatile phase change materials is one of the most prominent. Tuning the refractive index of these materials, and thus changing the electromagnetic response of the device, can be achieved by external modulation that enables the transition between their amorphous and crystalline structural states. In this work, we study a structure that exploits these materials to fully control the electromagnetic response, i.e., electric, magnetic, and electromagnetic coupling. Powered by this controllability, we present how the metasurface can be designed to perform beam steering and switchable one-way absorption applications. In addition, we demonstrate that the same platform can be designed to work in a nonlocal regime to implement a more efficient way of controlling light.

Spaceplates have emerged in the context of nonlocal metasurfaces, enabling the compression of optical systems by minimizing the required empty space between their components. In this work, we design and analyze spaceplates that support resonances with opposite symmetries, operating under the so-called Huygens' condition. Using the temporal coupled-mode theory, we demonstrate that the spatial compression provided by Huygens' spaceplates is twice that of conventional single-resonance counterparts. Additionally, they can support broader operational bandwidths and numerical apertures, facilitating the reduction of chromatic aberrations. Moreover, Huygens' spaceplates maintain nearly full transparency over a wide frequency and angular range, allowing their straightforward cascading for multi-frequency broadband operation. Nonreciprocal devices, including optical isolators, phase shifters, and amplifiers, are pivotal for advanced optical systems. However, exploiting natural materials is challenging due to their weak magneto-optical effects, requiring substantial thickness to construct effective optical devices. In this study, we demonstrate that subwavelength metasurfaces supporting bound states in the continuum and made of conventional magnetic ferrite can exhibit extreme nonreciprocity in the Faraday configuration and near-unity magnetic circular dichroism. These metasurfaces enhance the magneto-optical effect by 3--4 orders of magnitude compared to a continuous film of the same material. This significant enhancement is achieved by leveraging Huygens' condition in the metasurface whose structural units support paired electric and magnetic dipole resonances. We develop the multi-mode temporal coupled-mode theory for the observed enhancement of the magneto-optical effect and confirm our findings with the full-wave simulations.

Metasurfaces providing resonances arising from quasi-bound states in the continuum have been proposed as sensors in the THz band due to the existence of strong resonances characterized by high quality factors. Controlling geometrical parameters, the quality factor can be adjusted and, theoretically, designed at will. However, losses in materials critically bound the metasurface performance and limit the quality factor of the resonances. For this reason, all-dielectric metasurfaces have been proposed as an alternative to metal-dielectric structures to reduce losses and achieve extreme functionalities. When implemented by low-loss materials, these structures are usually considered lossless and proposed as ultrasensitive sensors in the THz band. In this paper, we examine the effect of losses in all-dielectric metasurfaces considering realistic materials and study the limitations in the quality factor. In addition, we compare the performance of these structures as sensors with a nanostructure supporting extraordinary optical transmission. Our results show that material loss, even in low-loss materials, severely limits the sensing performance in all-dielectric metasurfaces, and that their performance can be surpassed by structures supporting extraordinary optical transmission., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Known coherent metasurfaces control interference of waves of a given frequency with other coherent waves at the same frequency, either illuminating from a different direction or created as intermodulation products. In this paper, we introduce a class of metasurfaces that are modulated in time coherently with the illuminating radiation. Importantly, such modulation opens a possibility to control reflection, absorption, and transmission at multiple frequencies, including illuminations by two or more incoherent waves. In particular, we study dynamic resistive layers and show how to use them to design thin multi-frequency perfect absorbers that overcome the bandwidth limit for static linear absorbers. Furthermore, we demonstrate possibilities of remote tuning of the absorption level. We hope that this work opens up novel avenues in wave engineering using coherent modulation of metasurface parameters.

Many advances in reflective metasurfaces have been made during the last few years, implementing efficient manipulations of wavefronts, especially for plane waves. Despite numerous solutions that have been developed throughout the years, a practical method to obtain subwavelength focusing without the generation of additional undesired scattering is a challenge to this day. In this paper, we introduce and discuss lossless reflectors for focusing incident waves into a point. The solution is based on the so-called power flow-conformal surfaces that allow theoretically arbitrary shaping of reflected waves. The metamirror shape is adapted to the power flow of the sum of the incident and reflected waves, allowing a local description of the reflector surface based on the surface impedance. In particular, we present a study of two scenarios. First, we study the scenario when the field is emitted by a point source and focused at an image point (in the considered example, with the {\lambda}/20 resolution). Second, we analyze a metasurface capable to focus the power of an illuminating plane wave. This work provides a feasible strategy for various applications, including detecting biological signals near the skin, sensitive power focusing for cancer therapy, and point-to-point power transfer.

In view of extremely challenging requirements on design and optimization of future mobile communication systems, researchers are considering possibilities of creation intelligent radio environments by using reconfigurable and smart metasurfaces integrated into walls, ceilings, or facades. In this novel communication paradigm, tunable metasurfaces redirect incident waves into the desired directions. In order to design and characterize such smart radio environments in any realistic scenario, it is necessary to know how these metasurfaces behave when illuminated from other directions and how scattering from finite-sized anomalous reflectors can be estimated. We study the angular response of anomalous reflectors for arbitrary illumination angles. Using the surface-impedance model, we explain the dependence of the reflection coefficients of phase-gradient metasurfaces on the illumination angle and present numerical examples for typical structures. We also consider scattering from finite-size metasurfaces and define a route toward including the full-angle response of anomalous reflections into the ray-tracing models of the propagation channel. The developed models apply to other diffraction gratings of finite size.

The smartphone, as a media device, should offer a large-size screen and fast data rates in a well-packed device. Emergent 5G technologies based on millimeter waves need efficiently radiating antennas integrated into devices whose bodies (especially glass screens) behave as waveguides in the antenna frequency bands. Metasurfaces have shown unprecedented possibilities for wavefront manipulation of waves. The research efforts have been focused on the development of metasurfaces that perform a specific functionality for waves of one physical nature, for example, for electromagnetic waves. In this work, we propose the use of power-flow conformal metamirrors for creation of multiphysics devices which can simultaneously control waves of different nature. In particular, we introduce metasurface devices which perform specified operations on both electromagnetic and acoustic waves at the same time. Using a purely analytical model based on surface impedances, we introduce metasurfaces that perform the same functionality for electromagnetic and acoustic waves and, even more challenging, different functionalities for electromagnetics and acoustics. This tutorial provides an intuitive and concrete description of the phenomena of electromagnetic nonreciprocity that will be useful for readers with engineering or physics backgrounds. The notion of time reversal and its different definitions are discussed with special emphasis to its relationship with the reciprocity concept. Starting from the Onsager reciprocal relations generally applicable to many physical processes, we present the derivation of the Lorentz theorem and discuss other implications of reciprocity for electromagnetic systems. Next, we identify all possible routes towards engineering nonreciprocal devices and analyze in detail three of them: Based on external bias, based on nonlinear and time-variant systems. The principles of the operation of different nonreciprocal devices are explained. We address the similarity and fundamental difference between nonreciprocal effects and asymmetric transmission in reciprocal systems. In addition to the tutorial description of the topic, the manuscript also contains original findings. In particular, general classification of reciprocal and nonreciprocal phenomena in linear bianisotropic media based on the space- and time-reversal symmetries is presented. This classification serves as a powerful tool for drawing analogies between seemingly distinct effects having the same physical origin and can be used for predicting novel electromagnetic phenomena. Physical systems with material properties modulated in time provide versatile routes for designing magnetless nonreciprocal devices. Traditionally, nonreciprocity in such systems is achieved exploiting both temporal and spatial modulations, which inevitably requires a series of time-modulated elements distributed in space. In this paper, we introduce a concept of bianisotropic time-modulated systems capable of nonreciprocal wave propagation at the fundamental frequency and based on uniform, solely temporal material modulations. In the absence of temporal modulations, the considered bianisotropic systems are reciprocal. We theoretically explain the nonreciprocal effect by analyzing wave propagation in an unbounded bianisotropic time-modulated medium. The effect stems from temporal modulation of spatial dispersion effects which to date were not taken into account in previous studies based on the local-permittivity description. We propose a circuit design of a bianisotropic metasurface that can provide phase-insensitive isolation and unidirectional amplification.

In analogy with electromagnetic networks which connect multiple input-output ports, metasurfaces can be considered as multi-port devices capable of providing different functionalities for waves of different polarizations illuminating the surface from different directions. The main challenge in the design of such multichannel metasurfaces is to ensure independent and full control of the electromagnetic response for each channel ensuring the fulilment of the boundary condition at the metasurface. In this work, we demonstrate that by properly engineering the evanescent fields excited at each port (that is, for all possible illumination directions), it is possible to independently control the reflection or transmission for all different illuminations. We develop a fully analytical method to analyze and synthesize general space-modulated impedance metasurfaces, engineering strong spatial dispersion. This method, combined with mathematical optimization, allows us to find a surface impedance profile that simultaneously ensures the desired electromagnetic responses at each port. We validate the technique via the design of phase-controlled multichannel retroreflectors. In addition, we demonstrate that the method is rather powerful in the design of other functional metasurfaces such as multifunctional reflectors and multichannel perfect absorbers., Comment: 10 pages

Integrating multiple functionalities into a single metasurface is becoming of great interest for future intelligent communication systems. While such devices have been extensively explored for reciprocal functionalities, in this work, we integrate a wide variety of nonreciprocal applications into a single platform. The proposed structure is based on spatiotemporally modulated impedance sheets supported by a grounded dielectric substrate. We show that, by engineering the excitation of evanescent modes, nonreciprocal interactions with impinging waves can be configured at will. We demonstrate a plethora of nonreciprocal components such as wave isolators, phase shifters, and circulators, on the same metasurface. This platform allows switching between different functionalities only by modifying the pumping signals (harmonic or non-harmonic), without changing the main body of the metasurface structure. This solution opens the door for future real-time reconfigurable and environment-adaptive nonreciprocal wave controllers.

Although a rigorous theoretical ground on metasurfaces has been established in the recent years on the basis of the equivalence principle, the majority of metasurfaces for converting a propagating wave into a surface wave are developed in accordance with the so-called generalized Snell's law being a simple heuristic rule for performing wave transformations. Recently, for the first time, Tcvetkova et al. [Phys. Rev. B 97, 115447 (2018)] have rigorously studied this problem by means of a reflecting anisotropic metasurface, which is, unfortunately, difficult to realize, and no experimental results are available. In this paper, we propose an alternative practical design of a metasurface-based converter by separating the incident plane wave and the surface wave in different half-spaces. It allows one to preserve the polarization of the incident wave and substitute the anisotropic metasurface by an omega-bianisotropic one. The problem is approached from two sides: By directly solving the corresponding boundary problem and by considering the ``time-reversed'' scenario when a surface wave is converted into a nonuniform plane wave. We develop a practical three-layer metasurface based on a conventional printed circuit board technology to mimic the omega-bianisotropic response. The metasurface incorporates metallic walls to avoid coupling between adjacent unit cells and accelerate the design procedure. Recent advances in metasurfaces have shown the importance of controlling the bianisotropic response of the constituent meta-atoms for maximum efficiency wavefront transformation. Under the paradigm of a bianisotropic metasurface, full control of the local scattering properties is allowed opening new design avenues for creating reciprocal metasurfaces. Despite recent advances in the perfect transformation of both electromagnetic and acoustic plane waves, the importance of bianisotropic metasurfaces for transforming cylindrical waves is still unexplored. Motivated by the possibility of arbitrarily controlling the angular momentum of cylindrical waves, we develop a design methodology for a bianisotropic cylindrical metasurface that enables perfect transformation of cylindrical waves. We propose the design and measurement of an acoustic metasurface retroreflector that works at three discrete incident angles. An impedance model is developed such that for acoustic waves impinging at -60 degrees, the reflected wave is defined by the surface impedance of the metasurface, which is realized by a periodic grating. At 0 and 60 degrees, the retroreflection condition can be fulfilled by the diffraction of the surface. The thickness of the metasurface is about half of the operating wavelength and the retroreflector functions without parasitic diffraction associated with conventional gradient-index metasurfaces. Such highly efficient and compact retroreflectors open up possibilities in metamaterial-based acoustic sensing and communications., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

On the quest towards full control over wave propagation, the development of compact devices that allow asymmetric response is a challenge. In this Letter, we introduce a new paradigm for the engineering of asymmetry in planar structures, revealing and exploiting unilateral excitation of evanescent waves. We test the idea with the design and experimental characterization of a metasurface for angular-asymmetric absorption. The results show that the contrast ratio of absorption (the asymmetry level) can be arbitrarily engineered from zero to infinity for waves coming from two oppositely tilted angles. We demonstrate that the revealed asymmetry effects cannot be realized using conventional diffraction gratings, reflectarrays, and phase-gradient metasurfaces. Recent advances in gradient metasurfaces have shown that only by locally controlling the bianisotropic response of the constituent cells can one ensure full control of refraction, i.e., arbitrarily modify the direction of the incident waves without producing scattering into unwanted directions. In this work, we propose and experimentally verify the use of a new acoustic cell architecture that provides enough degrees of freedom to fully control the bianisotropic response and minimizes the implementation losses produced by resonant elements. The versatility of the approach is shown through the design of three different anomalous refractive metasurfaces capable of redirecting a normally incident plane wave to 60, 70 and 80 degrees on transmission. The effciency of the bianisotropic designs is over 90%, much higher than the corresponding designs based on the conventional generalized Snells law (81%, 58%, and 35%). Recently, the complexity behind manipulations of reflected fields by metasurfaces has been addressed showing that, even in the simplest scenarios, non-local response and excitation of auxiliary evanescent fields are required for perfect field control. Although these solutions theoretically allow to reflect incident plane waves into any desired direction, actual implementations are difficult and, in most cases, require extensive numerical optimization of the metamirror topology. In this work we introduce purely local reflective metasurfaces for arbitrary manipulations of the power distribution of reflected waves without excitation of any auxiliary evanescent fields. The reflected fields of such local metamirror contain only the desired propagating waves. The method is based on the analysis of the power flow distribution and the adaptation of the reflector shape to the desired distribution of incident and reflected fields. As a result, we find that these power-conformal metamirrors can be easily implemented with conventional passive unit cells.The results can be used for the design of reflecting surfaces with multiple functionalities and for waves of different physical nature. For transmissive applications of electromagnetic metasurfaces, an array of subwavelength Huygens' metaatoms are typically used to eliminate reflection and achieve a high transmission power efficiency together with a wide transmission phase coverage. We show that the underlying principle of low reflection and full control over transmission is asymmetric scattering into the specular reflection and transmission directions that results from a superposition of symmetric and anti-symmetric scattering components, with Huygens' meta-atoms being one example configuration. Available for oblique illumination in TM polarization, a meta-atom configuration comprising normal and tangential electric polarizations is presented, which is capable of reflectionless, fullpower transmission and a $2\pi$ transmission phase coverage as well as full absorption. For lossy metasurfaces, we show that a complete phase coverage is still available for reflectionless designs for any value of absorptance. Numerical examples in the microwave and optical regimes are provided.

In this paper, theoretical and numerical studies of perfect/nearly-perfect conversion of a plane wave into a surface wave are presented. The problem of determining the electromagnetic properties of an inhomogeneous lossless boundary which would fully transform an incident plane wave into a surface wave propagating along the boundary is considered. An approximate field solution which produces a slowly growing surface wave and satisfies the energy conservation law is discussed and numerically demonstrated. Manipulation of acoustic wavefronts by thin and planar devices, known as metasurfaces, has been extensively studied, in view of many important applications. Reflective and refractive metasurfaces are designed using the generalized reflection and Snell's laws, which tell that local phase shifts at the metasurface supply extra momentum to the wave, presumably allowing arbitrary control of reflected or transmitted waves. However, as it has been recently shown for the electromagnetic counterpart, conventional metasurfaces based on the generalized laws of reflection and refraction have important drawbacks in terms of power efficiency. This work presents a new synthesis method of acoustic metasurfaces for anomalous reflection and transmission that overcomes the fundamental limitations of conventional designs, allowing full control of acoustic energy flow. The results show that different mechanisms are necessary in the reflection and transmission scenarios for ensuring perfect performance. Metasurfaces for anomalous reflection require non-local response, which allows energy channeling along the metasurface. On other hand, for perfect manipulation of anomalously transmitted waves, local and non-symmetric response is required. These conclusions are interpreted through appropriate surface impedance models which are used to find possible physical implementations of perfect metasurfaces in each scenario. We hope that this advance in the design of acoustic metasurfaces opens new avenues not only for perfect anomalous reflection and transmission but also for realizing more complex functionalities, such as focusing, self-bending or vortex generation., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

Recent advances in engineered gradient metasurfaces have enabled unprecedented opportunities for light manipulation using optically thin sheets, such as anomalous refraction, reflection, or focusing of an incident beam. Here we introduce a concept of multi-channel functional metasurfaces, which are able to control incoming and outgoing waves in a number of propagation directions simultaneously. In particular, we reveal a possibility to engineer multi-channel reflectors. Under the assumption of reciprocity and energy conservation, we find that there exist three basic functionalities of such reflectors: Specular, anomalous, and retro reflections. Multi-channel response of a general flat reflector can be described by a combination of these functionalities. To demonstrate the potential of the introduced concept, we design and experimentally test three different multi-channel reflectors: Three- and five-channel retro-reflectors and a three-channel power splitter. Furthermore, by extending the concept to reflectors supporting higher-order Floquet harmonics, we forecast the emergence of other multiple-channel flat devices, such as isolating mirrors, complex splitters, and multi-functional gratings., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures

The use of the generalized Snell's law opens wide possibilities for the manipulation of transmitted and reflected wavefronts. However, known structures designed to shape reflection wave fronts suffer from significant parasitic reflections in undesired directions: In fact, the desired field distributions do not satisfy Maxwell's equations if the boundary conditions are specified in accordance with the generalized Snell's law. In this work, we explore the limitations of the existing solutions for the design of passive planar reflectors and demonstrate that strongly non-local response is required for perfect performance. Ideal reflective surfaces capable of steering the energy into any desired direction have to localize and carry energy along the inhomogeneous reflective surface. A new paradigm for the design of perfect reflectors based on energy surface channeling is introduced. We realize and experimentally verify a theoretically perfect design of an anomalously reflective surface using an array of rectangular metal patches backed by a metallic plate. This conceptually new mechanism for wavefront manipulation allows the design of thin perfect reflectors, offering a versatile design method applicable to other scenarios such as focusing reflectors or surface wave manipulations, extendible to other frequencies., Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures

Non-uniform metasurfaces (electrically thin composite layers) can be used for shaping refracted and reflected electromagnetic waves. However, known design approaches based on the generalized refraction and reflection laws do not allow realization of perfectly performing devices: there are always some parasitic reflections into undesired directions. In this paper we introduce and discuss a general approach to the synthesis of metasurfaces for full control of transmitted and reflected plane waves and show that perfect performance can be realized. The method is based on the use of an equivalent impedance matrix model which connects the tangential field components at the two sides on the metasurface. With this approach we are able to understand what physical properties of the metasurface are needed in order to perfectly realize the desired response. Furthermore, we determine the required polarizabilities of the metasurface unit cells and discuss suitable cell structures. It appears that only spatially dispersive metasurfaces allow realization of perfect refraction and reflection of incident plane waves into arbitrary directions. In particular, ideal refraction is possible only if the metasurface is bianisotropic (weak spatial dispersion), and ideal reflection without polarization transformation requires spatial dispersion with a specific, strongly non-local response to the fields., Comment: 36 pages, 8 figures
