Abstract

La brucelosis es una de las zoonosis más importantes a nivel mundial. La falta de conocimientos generales y de actitud ante esta enfermedad, en comunidades rurales con caprinos infectados, puede deteriorar la calidad de vida de sus habitantes, afectando negativamente el comportamiento de estos pacientes para la búsqueda de atención médica especializada. Lo que conduce a una transmisión sostenida de la enfermedad. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo para estimar mediante encuestas, la percepción de la brucelosis y la calidad de vida ambiental, en dos comunidades endémicas de brucelosis, dentro del marco multidisciplinario “Una Sola Salud”. Los resultados denotaron una actitud y un conocimiento general de la enfermedad, que va de lo global a moderado, en el que las creencias, el modo de vida tradicional y la carencia de buenas prácticas sanitarias, crean condiciones propicias para la propagación y transmisión horizontal de la brucelosis en estas poblaciones. Los riesgos ligados a tales prácticas, son difíciles de controlar, debido a la falta de alternativas y de soluciones asequibles. Los determinantes sociales, son preponderantes en la cronicidad de esta zoonosis. La brucelosis, afecta tanto la salud de las personas, como la productividad de su ganado caprino, y puede tener profundos efectos económicos. Por lo que estos estudios son relevantes para el mejor entendimiento de esta enfermedad en esta región de estudio.

Abstract

Seagrasses are recognized as a natural resource of vital importance for the ecosystem services that they provide. The Caguanes National Park (PNC) is a protected marine area, threatened by organic contamination at the Sabana-Camagüey archipelago. The goal of this paper is to provide with the seagrasses distribution and characteristics at PNC, from data collected in March 2003. Transects perpendicular to the coast were made, and coverage, density and biomass samplings from marine angiosperms and associated macroal-gae were done. Depth, transparency, horizontal visibility and seawater salinity were also measured. Large areas of seagrass meadows were found, where Thalassia testudinum proliferated, with a mean cover of 13.5 % (± 24.1 DE) for the whole area under investigation. Syringodium filiforme was abundant, with an overall coverage area (20.5 ± 24.7%) greater than T. testudinum. Halodule wrightii had a relative high cover in several sites with a mean of 5.9 ± 13.8%. The order in which the species of marine angiosperms through the transectos appeared was variable. Rhizophytic green macroalgae were observed at the bottoms, among marine angiosperms as well as intermixed with other species forming adrift masses of seaweeds. Epiphytes were relatively scarce, covering just over 25% of leaf surface. Five sites were found without marine vegetation, where the seawater transparency was low due to organic contamination. Abstract

One of the major challenges to understanding the evolution of Neotropical bats concerns our capacity to successfully scrutinize phylogenetic patterns associated with cases of cryptic species complexes. In this study Pteronotus parnellii is examined as a selected example of a known lineage of mormoopid bat that potentially contains several cryptic species. A samples of 452 individuals from 83 different localities, essentially covering its entire mainland distribution, was evaluated using two genetic markers: COI (mitochondrial) and DBY (nuclear) genes. The findings of this study strongly support the hypothesis of high genetic variability and identify at least six lineages within P. parnellii, some of which appear to be cryptic species.

Abstract

In the present study we undertook an integrative approach, using both morphological and molecular data (COI-5P + rbcL), to assess the presence of Laurencia pyramidalis in Lusitanian Macaronesia.We studied type material of L. pyramidalis from the herbarium of the Naturalis Biodiversity Center, the Netherlands, and designated a lectotype and syntypes. Vegetative and reproductive features of L. pyramidalis were observed and we included a specimen from the type locality in our molecular analyses.We also investigated the geographical distribution of Laurenciella marilzae, a species recently described from the Canary Islands. Barcode sequences (COI-5P and rbcL) were generated for L. pyramidalis from the type locality (Normandy, France), the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands, and for L. marilzae from its type locality (Tenerife, Canary Islands), the Azores and Brazil.

Abstract

IV Congress of Marine Sciences. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, June 11th to 13th 2014. In the present study, we undertook an integrative approach, using molecular data to assess the diversity of the Laurencia complex in Macaronesian islands (Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands) where speciation events are supposedly common leading to a high endemism. Identification of species of the Laurencia complex based on anatomical and morphological characters is extremely difficult due to phenotypic plasticity and overlaps in many morphological characters. As a consequence, among the 28 species reported so far from these Macaronesian archipelagos, 14 species records have been regarded as doubtful. We used DNA barcode data (mitochondrial COI gene and partial nuclear LSU marker) as a tool for species delimitation. A third marker (rbcL gene) was also studied and phylogenetic analyses were carried out using the three independent markers as well as the combined data set, in the aim to infer the phylogenetic relationships and biogeographic affinities of members of the complex from Macaronesia. Our results proved the usefulness of the DNA barcode markers for uncovering several putative new species of the Laurencia complex in Macaronesia and phylogenetic results revealed the existence of a potential new genus present in Canary Islands, which adds to the six pre-existing genera: Laurencia, Osmundea, Chondrophycus, Palisada, Yuzurua and Laurenciella.

Abstract

10th International Phycological Congress, Orlando, Florida, USA, 4-10 de agosto 2013. The diversity of the Laurencia complex is being assessed in tropical and subtropical Atlantic by an international cooperation project involving Brazil, Mexico, Spain (Canary Islands), Portugal (Azores and Madeira) and USA (Florida) on the base of molecular data allied to a detailed morphological study of species. The diversity of the complex was analyzed for the first time for the Atlantic Ocean, including specimens from all five localities, using the plastid 23S rRNA gene (UPA) which has been investigated as potential DNA Barcode marker for photosynthetic eukaryotes. The mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I gene (COI-5P) was also used as DNA barcode for the same set of species, and the rbcL gene was used for phylogenetic inferences. The range of genetic variation was compared for the three markers. The UPA proved to be more conserved; however, the same genetic groups were resolved with each of the three markers confirming the six genera currently established for the complex: Chondrophycus, Laurencia, Laurenciella, Palisada, Osmundea and Yuzurua.
