Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) have demonstrated potential as active laser materials, showing good Amplified Stimulated Emission (ASE) properties. However, the molecular origin of their ASE properties is still unclear and depends on the particular compound. In this work we study the ASE properties of polystyrene films hosting three different perylene-based PAHs YZ-1, YZ-2 and YZ-3, where only YZ-3 has displayed ASE. Their molecular structure has been systematically changed to establish the connection between their molecular structure and their ASE properties. A complete spectroscopic study, with ground state and time-resolved techniques, show that, even at low yields, triplets play a critical role as a major loss mechanism. Their slow relaxation to ground state completely hinders the required unbalance of the S1 and S0 states for succesful ASE. Quantum chemical calculations suggest that a lower triplet density of states for YZ-3 is responsible for the blockage in triplet formation and, therefore, does not restrict ASE. This work not only presents a new PAH showing ASE, but also unequivocable proves the massive importance of triplet states in the development of organic lasers.

Graphene-like molecules with multiple zigzag edges are emerging as promising gain materials for organic lasers. Their emission wavelengths can vary widely, ranging from visible to near-infrared (NIR), as molecular size increases. Specifically, rhombus-shaped molecular graphenes with two pairs of parallel zigzag edges, known as [n]rhombenes, are excellent candidates for NIR lasers due to their small energy gaps. However, synthesizing large-size rhombenes with emission beyond 800 nm in solution remains a significant challenge. In this study, we present a straightforward synthesis of an aryl-substituted [4]rhombene derivative, [4]RB-Ar, using a method that combines intramolecular radical-radical coupling with Bi(OTf)3-mediated cyclization of vinyl ethers. The structure of [4]RB-Ar was confirmed through X-ray crystallographic analysis. Bond length analysis and theoretical calculations indicate that aromatic sextets are predominantly localized along the molecule's long axis. Significantly, [4]RB-Ar demonstrates narrow amplified spontaneous emission at around 834 nm when dispersed in polystyrene thin films. Moreover, solution-processed distributed feedback lasers employing [4]RB-Ar as the active gain material display tunable narrow emissions in the range of 830 to 844 nm.

A method to fabricate gold nanoparticles in gelatin films and pattern them into gratings with periods down to 200 nm is reported. The procedure, based on holographic lithography, dry etching and temperature annealing, enables tuning the size and particle distribution. These materials offer potential for wearable and bio-compatible plasmonic-based applications.

El láser conforma un tema de estudio recurrente en el ámbito de la óptica-electrónica debido a su alta aplicabilidad a una gran variedad de entornos profesionales. Por ello, el interés en conseguir que este tipo de dispositivos sea lo más eficiente y versátil posible ha llevado a grandes avances en el área. No obstante, sigue siendo necesaria la profundización en aspectos tales como la fotoestabilidad de los colorantes y materiales activos de carácter orgánico que los componen, con el fin de que sean viables a nivel comercial. En este trabajo se ha llevado a cabo el estudio exhaustivo de la degradación del colorante perileno naranja (PDI-O) disperso en láminas delgadas de poliestireno (PS) mediante un nuevo método ultrasensible que permite caracterizar dicho fenómeno con gran precisión. Para llevar a cabo dicho estudio, se han fabricado numerosos dispositivos conocidos como láseres de retroalimentación distribuida (DFB). Los láseres DFB suponen una gran ventaja a la hora de estudiar este tipo de fenómenos ópticos gracias a su capacidad sensora y alta sensibilidad. El hecho de que el PDI-O es un material orgánico muy estable es ampliamente conocido. La manera habitual de estudiar la fotodegradación de este tipo de dispositivos consiste en analizar decaimiento de la intensidad láser en función del tiempo, haciendo incidir el bombeo sobre un punto fijo de la muestra. En este trabajo se ha demostrado que la fotodegradación también implica un desplazamiento del pico de emisión, siendo este fenómeno extremadamente sensible. Por otro lado, se ha dispuesto de este colorante y el propio dispositivo en distintas circunstancias de composición y fabricación con el objetivo de identificar los parámetros más influyentes en la emisión láser. El análisis de resultados ha revelado que tal aspecto parece ser la concentración del colorante en la matriz de PS, suponiendo un menor porcentaje una menor degradación y con ello una mayor fotoestabilidad. Este trabajo consiste en la modelización de la propagación de luz visible en diversos tipos de guías de onda ópticas. El objetivo fundamental es aprender a utilizar el programa de software COMSOL Multiphysics, basado en el método de los elementos finitos, que es un programa muy potente que permite resolver las ecuaciones de Maxwell en sistemas de diferente complejidad. En primer lugar, se utilizará un programa de simulación de acceso abierto que permite simular sistemas multicapa homogéneos, tales como guías de onda planares, y cuyos resultados pueden compararse con soluciones analíticas. A continuación, se utilizará el programa COMSOL Multiphysics, en primer lugar, para reproducir los resultados de estructuras sencillas obtenidos anteriormente; y en segundo lugar, y en la medida de lo posible, para abordar sistemas más complejos, tales como los consistentes en guías de onda con una capa superior que tiene una modulación periódica de su espesor (una red de difracción de relieve). Este tipo de estructura es la que tienen los láseres con realimentación distribuida, que son utilizados en una gran diversidad de aplicaciones. Siguiendo este proceso, se han estudiado diferentes sistemas de guías de onda, variando diversos parámetros (espesores, índices de refracción y longitud de onda) para, de esta forma, estudiar los parámetros necesarios para una propagación óptima de la luz en una guía de ondas. Para contrastar la información, se han comparado los resultados de los dos softwares verificando su similitud y confirmando el correcto uso de ambos programas.

The optical and mechanical properties of 2D semiconductors make them excellent candidates for the active components of plastic optoelectronic devices. Here, the integration of single-layer WSe2 (1L-WSe2) into a polystyrene (PS) film containing dispersed perylene orange (PDI-O) molecules is investigated. The findings reveal a notable enhancement in the light emission of 1L-WSe2, which occurs exclusively upon PDI-O excitation and scales with the concentration of molecules in the PS film. Moreover, the increase in 1L-WSe2 photoluminescence coincides with a quenching of the PDI-O light emission intensity and a decrease in its lifetime. These results point to efficient long-range interactions, such as Förster energy transfer, between PDI-O (acting as the donor) and 1L-WSe2 (acting as the acceptor), as the mechanism responsible for the enhanced light emission in the latter. These findings are of great interest for the development of flexible optoelectronic devices integrating active 2D materials; the polymeric matrix plays a dual role, serving as both physical support and host for organic dopants that can optimize the light emission properties of the active 2D material.

The combination of specific van der Waals semiconductors in vertical stacks leads to atomically sharp heterointerfaces with unique properties, offering versatility and additional functionality for thin, flexible, optoelectronic devices. In this work, we demonstrate heterostructures built from single-layer MoS2 (n-type) and multilayer FePS3 (p-type) as multifunctional p–n junctions where robust photoluminescent light emission and broadband electrical photo-response coexist. This is made possible by the inherent properties of the materials involved and the precise energy band alignment at their interface, which preserves the photoluminescent emission provided by the single-layer MoS2 and confers exceptional tunability to the system. Indeed, through small changes in the applied voltage across the junction, the interplay between photoluminescence and photocurrent generation can be tuned, allowing for a precise control of the light emission of single-layer MoS2 – from severely quenched to an order of magnitude enhancement. Additionally, the broadband photo-response of the system presents an enhanced performance under ultraviolet illumination, in contrast to other van der Waals heterostacks containing single-layer semiconductors. Furthermore, this photo-response can be adjusted by the application of an external electric field, enabling photocurrent generation under both reverse and forward bias, thereby contributing to the overall functionality and versatility of the system.

En la actualidad existe una creciente demanda de dispositivos láser en numerosos entornos profesionales. Así, hay un gran interés por mejorar estos aparatos, obteniendo láseres cada vez más versátiles, potentes y económicos. El uso de materiales plásticos está permitiendo alcanzar muchas mejoras en las propiedades mecánicas del láser, tales como su tamaño y flexibilidad. En este trabajo se han estudiado las propiedades ópticas (absorción y fotoluminiscencia) de un nanografeno (NG) muy novedoso, concretamente un dímero de trianguleno, disperso en un polímero termoplástico (poliestireno, PS) preparado en forma de guía de ondas. Una vez determinada la presencia de emisión espontánea amplificada (ASE), indicativa de la existencia de emisión estimulada, se han fabricado láseres con realimentación distribuida (DFB) con distintas concentraciones de NG en PS. El resonador láser consiste en una red de difracción de relieve unidimensional, fabricada por litografía holográfica, en una capa de fotoresina (gelatina dicromatada) que se deposita sobre la capa activa. Los láseres han sido caracterizados y comparados con otros que utilizaban materiales parecidos al presente NG, revelando el gran potencial de este nuevo compuesto. El estudio ha revelado que este NG presenta emisión en la zona cercana al infrarrojo (NIR), así como un tiempo de vida operacional más largo que otros materiales orgánicos, siendo un compuesto muy interesante para trabajos futuros en el campo de la optoelectrónica. Además, los resultados obtenidos en el presente trabajo han contribuido a la publicación de un artículo científico, que incluye la síntesis del compuesto (Shen, Dijkstra, et al. Angew. Chem. 2023).

Perylenediimide (PDI) compounds are widely used as the active units of thin-film organic lasers. Lately, PDIs bearing two sterically hindering diphenylphenoxy groups at the 1,7-bay positions have received attention because they provide a way to red-shift the emission with respect to bay-unsubstituted PDIs, while maintaining a good amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) performance at high doping rates. Here, we report the synthesis of a series of six PDI derivatives with different aryloxy groups (PDI 6 to PDI 10) or ethoxy groups (PDI 11) at the 1,7 positions of the PDI core, together with a complete characterization of their optical properties, including absorption, photoluminescence, and ASE. We aim to stablish structure-property relationships that help designing compounds with optimized ASE performance. Film experiments were accomplished at low PDI concentrations in the film, to resemble the isolated molecule behaviour, and at a range of increasing doping rates, to investigate concentration quenching effects. Compounds PDI 10 and PDI 7, bearing substituents in the 2′ positions of the benzene ring (the one contiguous to the linking oxygen atom) attached to the 1,7 positions of the PDI core, have shown a better threshold performance, which is attributed to conformational (steric) effects. Films containing PDI 11 show dual ASE.

Distributed feedback lasers (DFB) are some of the most studied thin film organic lasers, as they are cost-efficient, compact, and can be easily integrated with other devices. Besides, they are useful for a wide range of applications, such as spectroscopy, optical communications, and sensing. An organic DFB laser typically consists of an organic active thin film deposited over a relief grating engraved in an inorganic substrate (standard configuration), but it can present different architectures depending on the position of the resonator and the materials used for its fabrication. Here, a DFB laser architecture with a polymeric resonator deposited on top of the active film is studied. This architecture offers several advantages over the standard one. The device is easier to fabricate, as both films are organic and solution- processable, the active film presents a uniform thickness, and the grating period can be easily adjusted for each case as it is fabricated using holographic lithography. In this thesis, the optimization of DFB lasers based on polymeric diffractive resonators located on top of the active films has been achieved following two different goals: the resonator optimization through the control of the fabrication and the geometrical parameters; and the design and fabrication of optimized DFB lasers for new organic molecules to be used as active materials. The first step in the resonator optimization was to perform a systematic study of the effect of the fabrication process parameters on the final resonator characteristics in devices emitting in the visible, analyzing the influence of these parameters on the final DFB lasers emission properties. After that, the capability of the material used for the grating fabrication (dichromated gelatin, DCG) to form part of DFB lasers emitting at lower wavelengths (blue and deep-blue) was examined. We report the synthesis of a dibenzodinaphthocoronene (DBDNC) derivative as a novel nanographene with armchair, zigzag, and fjord edges, which was characterized by NMR and X-ray crystallography as well as infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopies. Ultrafast transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy revealed the presence of stimulated emission signals at 655 nm and 710 nm with a relatively long lifetime, which resulted in dual amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) bands under ns-pulsed excitation, indicating the promise of DBNDC as a near-infrared (NIR) fluorophore for photonics. Our results provide new insight into the design of nanographene with intriguing optical properties by incorporating fjord edges.

Los compuestos orgánicos conjugados han sido investigados ampliamente debido a su versatilidad para integrarse con otros materiales a través de métodos de bajo coste y a su idoneidad para una amplia gama de aplicaciones optoelectrónicas; por ejemplo, transistores de efecto de campo, células solares, LEDs y láseres, entre otros. Actualmente existe un interés particular en los materiales orgánicos para láser promovido por el desarrollo de aplicaciones biomédicas y de telecomunicaciones. De hecho, el desarrollo de técnicas bottom-up en la síntesis orgánica y de métodos computacionales químico-cuánticos permiten el diseño inteligente de compuestos orgánicos con propiedades a medida que pueden ser beneficiosas para tales aplicaciones. En este sentido, comprender la relación entre las características estructurales de los compuestos orgánicos y sus propiedades optoelectrónicas es una etapa obligatoria en el proceso de diseño. En el desarrollo de esta tesis se evalúan las propiedades fotofísicas de dos familias de compuestos orgánicos –perilenodiimidas y nanografenos– dispersos en matrices inertes con el objetivo de mejorar su funcionamiento como materiales activos para láseres. En particular, se han llevado a cabo tres actuaciones: 1) la investigación sistemática de dos polímeros termoplásticos comerciales, poliestireno y polimetilmetacrilato, como matrices inertes para dispersar compuestos de perilenodiimida con un enfoque en optimizar las propiedades de la guía de ondas y reducir los requisitos de energéticos de los dispositivos; 2) conocer los mecanismos de fotodegradación y quenching de la fotoluminiscencia en derivados de perilenodiimida dispersos en películas de poliestireno con el objetivo de obtener dispositivos más duraderos y eficientes; y 3) estudiar las propiedades fotofísicas de compuestos novedosos de la familia de los nanografenos dispersos en matrices inertes con el fin de comprender la relación entre su estructura –borde, heteroátomos, sustituyentes– y su

A naphtho[2,1-b:6,5-b′]difuran derivative was found to serve as an effective violet-emitting laser dye. It showed amplified spontaneous emission at 413 nm with the threshold of 1.1–2.9 mJ cm−2 using 0.1–0.5 wt% in polystyrene film. Lasing was also demonstrated using all-polymeric distributed-feedback lasers emitting at 411–417 nm with the threshold of 2.0–2.9 mJ cm−2.
