Food habits of Bathyraja brachyurops were studied based on stomach content analyses of 346 specimens collected from research cruises carried out from 2003 to 2005 on the Argentinean continental shelf (36ºS-55ºS). A total of 265 stomachs (76.6%) contained food, and thirty-five taxonomic levels of prey were identified. The most important prey were fishes followed by isopods. Trophic level analysis revealed that B. brachyurops is a tertiary consumer throughout its life history. There were no differences between sexes and regions in the diet composition, but dietary shifts with ontogeny were found. The Levins’ standardized index indicated wider niche breadth for small skates, whereas larger skate specimens showed a narrow niche breadth with a specialization in fishes. Se estudiaron los hábitos alimentarios de Bathyraja brachyurops en base al análisis de los contenidos estomacales de 346 ejemplares capturados en campañas de investigación realizadas durante el periodo 2003-2005 sobre la plataforma continental Argentina (36ºS-55ºS). Un total de 265 estómagos (76.6%) contenían alimento en los cuales se identificaron treinta y cinco ítems presa. Las presas más importantes fueron los peces, seguidos por los isópodos, ubicando a B. brachyurops como un consumidor terciario a lo largo de toda su historia de vida. No se hallaron diferencias en la composición de la dieta entre sexos y regiones, sin embargo se apreciaron cambios ontogenéticos en la alimentación. El índice de Levins’ estandarizado indicó una mayor amplitud de nicho para las rayas de menor tamaño, mientras que los ejemplares de mayor tamaño mostraron una menor amplitud de nicho trófico y una especialización ictiófaga.

Juvenile fishes were sampled every 15 days from September 2009 to April 2010 along the marine-estuarine gradient (surf zone, estuary and a freshwater stream) of the Mar Chiquita lagoon, Argentina. The temporal variations of juvenile assemblages in spring-summer and the environmental variables related to the spatial and temporal patterns were analysed. Four groups of sampling stations were defined, indicating differences in fish composition among zones during the spring–early summer period (Groups I to III), while the composition of juvenile fishes was homogeneous along the marine-estuarine gradient during the late summer–early autumn period (Group IV). Platanichthys platana and Ramnogaster arcuata (Group A) and Odontesthes argentinensis and Brevoortia aureaz (Group B) contributed most to the temporal differences observed. The three first species reached this estuarine system in spring, although with lower abundances than in early summer, while B. aurea was dominant in late summer–early autumn, showing different periods of recruitment of these species into the lagoon. After factoring out variation due to shared spatial-temporal-environmental factors (4.43%), canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed that temporal factors had an almost five times greater contribution (15.15%) than spatial factors (2.85%) and almost twice as great as the pure environmental factors (8.11%) to explaining the variation in abundance of the juvenile fishes. From the significant environmental variables incorporated in the CCA, wind direction contributed more than water temperature, salinity or transparency in explaining data variability. Indeed, most species were related to “onshore winds” and therefore the importance of wind in the successful recruitment of juveniles into this shallow and micro-tidal estuary is discussed., Los juveniles de peces se recolectaron cada 15 días desde septiembre de 2009 a abril de 2010 a lo largo de un gradiente marino-estuarino (en una zona de rompiente, estuario y un arroyo de agua dulce) de la laguna costera Mar Chiquita (Argentina). Se analizaron las variaciones temporales de las asociaciones de juveniles durante el periodo primavera-verano y las variables ambientales que estuvieron relacionadas con los patrones espaciales y temporales. Fueron definidos cuatro grupos de estaciones de muestreo indicando diferencias en la composición de peces entre zonas durante el período de primavera-verano temprano (grupos I a III), mientras que la composición de peces juveniles fue homogénea a lo largo del gradiente marino-estuarino durante el período de verano tardío-otoño temprano (grupo IV). Platanichthys platana y Ramnogaster arcuata (Grupo A), y Odontesthes argentinensis y Brevoortia aurea (Grupo B) fueron las especies que más contribuyeron a las diferencias temporales observadas. Las tres primeras especies llegaron a este sistema estuarino durante la primavera, aunque con menor abundancia en relación a la registrada en verano temprano, mientras que B. aurea fue dominante durante el verano tardío-otoño temprano, mostrando períodos de reclutamiento a la laguna distintos. Después de factorizar la variación compartida entre el factor espacial, el temporal y las variables ambientales (4.43%), el análisis de correspondencia canónica (CCA) mostró que el componente temporal tuvo una contribución casi 5 veces mayor (15.15%) a la del componente espacial (2.85%), y casi el doble a la de los factores puramente ambientales (8.11%) para explicar la variación en la abundancia de los juveniles de peces. De las variables ambientales significativas que fueron incorporadas en el CCA, la dirección del viento contribuyó más que la temperatura, la salinidad o la transparencia del agua en explicar la variabilidad de los datos. De hecho, la mayoría de las especies estuvieron relacionadas con los “vientos marinos” y, por lo tanto, se discute la importancia del viento en el éxito del reclutamiento de juveniles de peces a este estuario poco profundo y de régimen micro-mareal.

A new right eyed flounder, Samariscus hexaradiatus, is described on the basis of two specimens collected from the Solomon Islands, southwestern Pacific Ocean, at depths of 135-325 m. The new species is distinguished from other species of the genus by the following characters: 6 pectoral-fin rays; 82 dorsal-fin rays and 60-62 anal-fin rays; 9 abdominal vertebrae and 32 caudal vertebrae; presence of ctenoid scales on the interorbital space and high number (74-75) of lateral-line scales. Ocular side of body light brown with four and three distinguishable horseshoe-shaped spots along margins of both dorsal and ventral profiles, respectively. Two indistinct dusky blotches on the lateral line, one situated before the distal end part of the pectoral fin when flattened posteriorly, the other placed near the last one-third of the body length. Two distinct black spots placed on the upper and lower margins of the caudal peduncle at the posterior end of the dorsal and anal fins, respectively. Pectoral fin with dark pigmentation. Dorsal and anal fins dusky brown near the proximal and distal ends of the fin-rays, respectively, and with distinct series of small dusky spots on the medial parts the fin-rays.

Competition for food could be a major force driving changes in the community structure of skates (Rajidae) subjected to fishing exploitation. Under this hypothesis, small skates are released from competition with larger skates after fishing has depleted the larger species. Here, we compare the abundance patterns of two sympatric skates with similar niches but different life histories, Bathyraja albomaculata (larger and slow-reproducing) and Bathyraja macloviana (smaller and faster-reproducing), before (1971, 1978) and after (1998-2004) a 108% increase in industrial bottom trawling on the southeastern South American shelf in order to test the prediction that B. macloviana should competitively exclude B. albomaculata after the increase in fishing mortality. In 1971 and 1978, there was no relationship between the abundance of both species, indicating that they coexisted over large scales. In 1998-2004, the relationship between the abundances of these skates was bell-shaped, indicating that both species increased in abundance at low densities until peaking, after which B. albomaculata decreased when B. macloviana became more abundant, consistent with resource competition. We tested whether food may be a potential limiting resource by comparing the diet of both species. The two species consumed mostly polychaetes, differing only in the consumption of polychaetes from the family Nephthyidae, which was much higher for B. macloviana. Bathyraja macloviana could replace B. albomaculata at high densities when food resources may become scarce. These results support the hypothesis that competition release is an important factor explaining the changes in skate communities in overexploited areas. La competencia por el alimento podría ser una fuerza importante detrás de los cambios en la estructura de las comunidades de rayas (Rajidae) bajo explotación pesquera. Según esta hipótesis, las rayas pequeñas son liberadas de la competencia por las rayas de mayor tamaño, al disminuir la abundancia de éstas últimas por la pesca. En este trabajo, se comparan los patrones de abundancia de dos rayas simpátricas con nichos similares pero con diferentes historias de vida, Bathyraja albomaculata (mayor y de reproducción lenta) y Bathyraja macloviana (más pequeña y de reproducción más rápida), antes (1971, 1978) y después (1998-2004) de un incremento del 108% en el arrastre de fondo industrial en la plataforma sudeste de América del Sur, para evaluar la predicción que B. macloviana excluiría competitivamente a B. albomaculata después del aumento en la mortalidad por pesca. En 1971 y 1978, no hubo relación entre las abundancias de ambas especies, indicando que, a escalas grandes, coexistían. En 1998-2004, la relación entre las abundancias de ambas especies tuvo forma de campana, indicando que ambas incrementaron su abundancia a densidades bajas hasta alcanzar un máximo, a partir del cual la abundancia de B. albomaculata disminuyó a medida que aumentaba la de B. macloviana, patrón consistente con la competencia por uso de recursos. Se evaluó si el alimento puede ser un recurso limitante mediante la comparación de la dieta de ambas especies. Ambas especies consumieron predominantemente poliquetos y difirieron sólo en el consumo de poliquetos Nephthyidae, mucho mayor en B. macloviana. B. macloviana remplazaría a B. albomaculata a altas densidades, cuando el alimento podría ser escaso. Estos resultados apoyan la hipótesis de que la liberación de la competencia es un factor importante en los cambios en las comunidades de rayas sobreexplotadas.

The first case of an aberrant extra fin in a specimen of Zearaja chilensis (Guichenot, 1848), caught off Patagonian waters, Argentine Sea, is reported here.

The early developmental stages of Hypleurochilus fissicornis (Quoy {&} Gaimard, 1824) from egg to 120 hours after hatching are described for the first time, from three nests found in the rocky intertidal of Mar de Cobo, Argentina. Eggs are spherical, with an adhesive pad and purple pigment. Larvae have yellowish pigment on the head (snout, preocular, postocular) and pectoral fins. Melanophores cover the peritoneum and 28 occur in a row on the ventral edge of the tail.

This study aimed at sequencing the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (cyt b) of seahorses morphologically identified as Hippocampus patagonicus Piacentino {&} Luzzatto, 2004 from the two known localities where the species occur in the Argentine Sea (San Antonio Oeste and Mar del Plata). Based on the lack of substitutions within cyt b found between the individuals of both localities, the geographical range of H. patagonicus was extended up to the Northern limit of the Argentine Sea. A phylogenetic analysis comparing the cyt b sequences of Hippocampus species revealed that H. patagonicus together with H. hippocampus and H. erectus belong to a monophyletic group of species. The comparison of the cyt b sequence of Hippocampus cf. erectus from Southern Brazil with that one of H. patagonicus resulted in scarce differences. This could suggest the presence of H. patagonicus in southern Brazil, although further investigation is needed to resolve the taxonomic status of H. erectus in the South Western Atlantic.

This study analyzed the morphometric, microsatellite loci and mitochondrial control region variation of the striped weakfish from two feeding and spawning grounds in the coastal area of Buenos Aires province. The characterization of the body shape proved to be different between sites. Genetic structure analysis showed that the main source of genetic variation was within populations rather than among populations and low genetic differentiation was observed between sites. The striped weakfish inhabiting the coastal areas of Buenos Aires would exhibit two management units in agreement with other fishes studied in both areas.

El estudio morfológico de los elementos óseos es una herramienta valiosa para la taxonomía, que ha permitido la definición de los grandes grupos de vertebrados y la descripción e identificación de especies de peces. Así, la osteología comparada aporta elementos diagnósticos utilizables en estudios de biodiversidad, ecología trófica y dinámica de la alimentación de organismos ictiófagos. El objetivo del presente trabajo es realizar un análisis osteológico descriptivo y comparativo que permita la identificación, a través de los elementos óseos, de las principales especies de peces presentes en Mar Chiquita: la saraca (Brevoortia aurea), la lisa (Mugil platanus), el pejerrey de mar (Odontesthes argentinensis), la corvina rubia (Micropogonias furnieri), la corvina negra (Pogonias cromis), el lenguado de fango (Paralichthys orbignyanus), la anchoa de banco (Pomatomus saltatrix), la pescadilla de red (Cynoscion guatucupa) y la burriqueta (Menticirrhus americanus). Se analizaron seis ejemplares de cada especie y se utilizaron técnicas de desarticulación en peces frescos y congelados. Sobre la base de las características diagnósticas de los huesos y su grado de resistencia a la digestibilidad fueron seleccionados once elementos óseos: paraesfenoides, lacrimal, premaxilar, dentario, anguloarticular, palatino, hiomandibular, ceratohial, urohial, preopérculo y postemporal. Se realizó la descripción de los huesos mencionados y de acuerdo a las diferencias más importantes encontradas entre las especies estudiadas, se confeccionaron claves de identificación. Se concluye que la morfología de los elementos óseos constituye una herramienta diagnóstica valiosa para la determinación específica de los peces presentes en la laguna costera Mar Chiquita y zonas costeras aledañas. The morphological analysis of the bones is a valuable tool for taxonomy, which has allowed the definition of the higher groups of vertebrates and descriptions and identifications of fish species. Therefore, the compared osteology provides valuable diagnostic elements in biodiversity studies, ecology and dynamics of trophic habits of piscivore fish. The goal of the present study is to make a descriptive and comparative osteological analysis that allow the identification of the main fish species occurring in Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon: the brazilian menhaden (Brevoortia aurea), the mullet (Mugil platanus), the silver side (Odontesthes argentinensis), the white croaker (Micropogonias furnieri), the black drum (Pogonias cromis), the flounder (Paralichthys orbignyanus), the blue fish (Pomatomus saltatrix), the stripped weakfish (Cynoscion guatucupa) and the southern kingfish (Menticirrhus americanus). Six specimens of each species were analyzed and methods to disarticulate skeletons in fresh and frozen specimens were used. On the basis of the diagnostic characteristics of the bones and their degree of digestibility resistance, eleven bones were selected: parasphenoid, lachrymal, premaxilla, dentary, anguloarticular, palatine, hyomandibular, ceratohyal, urohyal, preopercle and posttemporal. Each bone has been described, and according to the most important differences found among fish species, identification keys were elaborated. We conclude that bone morphology constitutes a valuable diagnostic tool for the identification of fish species occurring in Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon and coastal adjacent areas.

Se realiza un análisis osteológico comparativo del esqueleto craneal en Paralichthys isosceles, P. orbignyanus y P. patagonicus, tres especies de lenguados presentes en el Atlántico suroccidental. Se describen las características de los componentes óseos y se detallan las diferencias morfológicas y morfométricas encontradas, con el fin de aportar elementos diagnósticos para la identificación taxonómica de las tres especies de Paralichthys. Se utilizaron técnicas de desarticulación de esqueletos, tanto en ejemplares frescos congelados, como en especímenes conservados en líquidos fijadores. The objective was to provide osteological evidence of diagnostic value for a correct identification of the flatfish species. Methods for preparing disarticulated skeletons were used for both dissected fresh-frosen and alcohol-preserved specimens. Also methods of clearing and staining for bone and cartilage were applied for small fish specimens. Potentially diagnostic features were found to distinguish among species in the right parethmoid, left lachrymal, angulo-articular, mesopterygoid, the otoliths, and the number of dentary teeth. Relationships between bones are discussed and bone characteristics are compared with those found in other Paralichthys species and in other Pleuronectiform species

Se efectuó un análisis osteológico comparativo entre especímenes de Brevoortia aurea procedentes de dos regiones del Atlántico suroccidental. El objetivo fue describir la osteología de la saraca con el fin de aportar características diagnósticas que permitan la discriminación de la especie con otras especies nominales del género. Se utilizaron técnicas de desarticulación en fresco para ejemplares grandes (162 a 285 mm de largo estándar) y de clareado y tinción para individuos pequeños (31,5 a 112,4 mm de largo estándar). El análisis detallado de las estructuras óseas permitió la discusión de las afinidades y diferencias con otras especies de clupeidos A comparative osteological analysis between specimens of Brevoortia aurea from two regions of the southwestern Atlantic was done. Se describen las pesquerías de lenguados del Atlántico sur sobre la base de series de valores temporales de desembarcos pesqueros entre los años 1950 y 1998, e información disponible sobre características biológicas, flotas, artes de pesca e importancia económica de las especies comerciales. Los lenguados de la familia Paralichthyidae, principalmente Paralichthys patagonicus, P. orbignyanus y Xystreurys rasile son intensamente explotados en el Atlántico suroccidental. En el sur de Brasil las capturas de estas especies alcanzaron un máximo de 1.892 t en 1989, mientras que en Argentina excedieron anualmente el valor de 10.000 t entre 1989 y 1998. En el Atlántico suroriental, el lenguado austral oeste, Austroglossus microlepis y el lenguado de fango, A. pectoralis representan un pequeño porcentaje de las capturas de arrastre en Sudáfrica, sin embargo constituyen los pescados más valiosos por unidad de peso y por lo tanto el principal objetivo de los pequeños barcos arrastreros. Los desembarques del lenguado austral oeste alcanzaron casi las 2.000 t en 1972, pero luego dicho valor declinó notablemente. La pesca de arrastre es el método más importante utilizado en la pesca de lenguados en el Atlántico suroccidental. La pesca con tangones y redes de enmalle son usadas para la pesca de lenguados. En el Atlántico suroriental, las principales capturas de lenguados se obtienen como fauna acompañante en las pesquerías de arrastre demersal. Los lenguados representan, tanto en el Atlántico suroccidental como suroriental, una fracción relativamente pequeña del total de las capturas comparado con otras especies de peces demersales como la merluza.
