The layered perovskite YBaCuFeO5 is a rare example of cycloidal spiral magnet whose ordering temperature Tspiral can be tuned far beyond room temperature by adjusting the degree of Cu2+/Fe3+ chemical disorder in the structure. This unusual property qualifies this material as one of the most promising spin-driven multiferroic candidates. However, very little is known about the response of the spiral to magnetic fields, crucial for magnetoelectric cross-control applications. Using bulk magnetization and neutron powder diffraction measurements under magnetic fields up to 9 T we report here the first temperature-magnetic field phase diagram of this material. Besides revealing a strong stability of the spiral state, our data uncover the presence of weak ferromagnetism coexisting with the spiral modulation. Since ferromagnets can be easily manipulated with magnetic fields, this observation opens new perspectives for the control of the spiral orientation, directly linked to the polarization direction, as well as for a possible future use of this material in technological applications.

The origin of the metal-to-insulator transition in RNiO3 perovskites with trivalent 4f ion has challenged the condensed matter research community for almost three decades. A drawback for progress in this direction has been the lack of studies combining physical properties and accurate structural data covering the full nickelate phase diagram. Here we focus on a small region close to the itinerant limit (R = Pr, 1.5K < T < 300K), where we investigate the gap opening and the simultaneous emergence of charge order in PrNiO3. We combine electric resistance, magnetization, and heat capacity measurements with high resolution neutron and synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction data that, in contrast to previous studies, we analyze in terms of symmetry-adapted distortion modes. Such analysis allows to identify the contribution of the different modes to the global distortion in a broad temperature range. Moreover, it shows that the structural changes at the MIT, traditionally described in terms of the evolution of the interatomic distances and angles, appear as abrupt increases of all nonzero mode amplitudes at TMIT = TN ~130K accompanied by the appearance of new modes below this temperature. A further interesting observation is the existence of a nearly perfect linear correlation between the amplitude of the breathing mode associated to the charge order and the staggered magnetization below the MIT. Our data also uncover a previously unnoticed anomaly at T* ~60K (~0.4 x TMIT), clearly visible in the electrical resistance, lattice parameters and some mode amplitudes. Since phase coexistence is only observed in a small temperature region around TMIT (~10K), these observations suggest the existence of a hidden symmetry in the insulating phase. La-filled skutterudites LaxCo4Sb12 (x : 0.25 and 0.5) have been synthesized and sintered in one step under high-pressure conditions at 3.5 GPa in a piston-cylinder hydrostatic press. The structural properties of the reaction products were characterized by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, clearly showing an uneven filling factor of the skutterudite phases, confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. The non-homogeneous distribution of La filling atoms is adequate to produce a significant decrease in lattice thermal conductivity, mainly due to strain field scattering of high-energy phonons. Furthermore, the lanthanum filler primarily acts as an Einstein-like vibrational mode having a strong impact on the phonon scattering. Extra-low thermal conductivity values of 2.39 W/mK and 1.30 W/mK are measured for La0.25Co4Sb12 and La0.5Co4Sb12 nominal compositions at 780 K, respectively. Besides this, lanthanum atoms have contributed to increase the charge carrier concentration in the samples. In the case of La0.25Co4Sb12, there is an enhancement of the power factor and an improvement of the thermoelectric properties.

SmFeO3 has attracted considerable attention very recently due to the reported multiferroic properties above room-temperature. We have performed powder and single crystal neutron diffraction as well as complementary polarization dependent soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements on floating-zone grown SmFeO3 single crystals in order to determine its magnetic structure. We found a k=0 G-type collinear antiferromagnetic structure that is not compatible with inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction driven ferroelectricity. While the structural data reveals a clear sign for magneto-elastic coupling at the N\'eel-temperature of ~675 K, the dielectric measurements remain silent as far as ferroelectricity is concerned.

How the magnetoelectric coupling actually occurs on a microscopic level in multiferroic BiFeO3 is not well known. By using the high-resolution single crystal neutron diffraction techniques, we have determined the electric polarization of each individual elements of BiFeO3, and concluded that the magnetostrictive coupling suppresses the electric polarization at the Fe site below TN. This negative magnetoelectric coupling appears to outweigh the spin current contributions arising from the cycloid spin structure, which should produce a positive magnetoelectric coupling., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, Accepted in Phys. The San Pedro M\'artir kinematic catalogue of galactic planetary nebulae provides spatially resolved, long-slit Echelle spectra for about 600 planetary nebulae. The data are presented wavelength calibrated and corrected for heliocentric motion. For most objects multiple spectra have been acquired and images with accurate slit positions on the nebulae are also presented for each object. This is the most extensive and homogeneous single source of data concerning the internal kinematics of the ionized nebular material in planetary nebulae. Data can be retrieved for individual objects or selected by groups that share some common characteristics, such as by morphological classes, galactic population, binary cores, presence of fast outflows, etc. The catalogue is available through the world wide web at http://kincatpn.astrosen.unam.mx ., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures. The magnetic form factor of YbInNi4 has been determined via the flipping ratios R with polarized neutron diffraction and the scattering function S(Q,w) was measured in an inelastic neutron scattering experiment. Both experiments were performed with the aim to determine the crystal-field scheme. The magnetic form factor clearly excludes the possibility of a \Gamma7 doublet as the ground state. The inelastic neutron data exhibit two, almost equally strong peaks at 3.2 meV and 4.4 meV which points, in agreement with earlier neutron data, towards a \Gamma8 quartet ground state. The relaxor ferroelectric PbMg_1/3Ta_2/3O_3 was studied by single-crystal neutron and synchrotron x-ray diffraction and its detailed atomic structure has been modeled in terms of static Pb-displacements that lead to the formation of polar nanoregions. Similar to the other members of the Pb-based relaxor family like PbMg_1/3Nb_2/3O_3 or PbZn_1/3Nb_2/3O_3 the diffuse scattering in the [H,0,0]/[0,K,0] scattering plane has a butterfly-shape around the (h,0,0) Bragg reflections and is transverse to the scattering vector for (h,h,0) peaks. In the [H,H,0]/[0,0,L] plane the diffuse scattering is elongated along the <1,1,2> directions and is transverse to the scattering vector for (h,h,h) reflections. We find that a model consisting of correlated Pb-displacements along the <1,1,1>-directions reproduces the main features of the diffuse scattering in PbMg_1/3Ta_2/3O_3 adequately when the correlation lengths between the Pb-ion displacement vectors are longest along the <1,1,1> and <1,-1,0> and shortest along <1,1,-2> directions., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. We have performed high resolution neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering experiments in the frustrated multiferroic hexagonal compounds RMnO3 (R=Ho, Yb, Sc, Y), which provide evidence of a strong magneto-elastic coupling in the the whole family. We can correlate the atomic positions, the type of magnetic structure and the nature of the spin waves whatever the R ion and temperature. The key parameter is the position of the Mn ions in the unit cell with respect to a critical threshold of 1/3, which determines the sign of the coupling between Mn triangular planes., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

We present a combined neutron and synchrotron powder diffraction study of the crystal and magnetic structure of VOCl. The occurrence of antiferromagnetic order in VOCl is accompanied by a monoclinic distortion. The high sensitivity of the magnetic interaction parameters on V-O-V bond angles and V-V distances yields strong magnetoelastic coupling which implies the structural distortion below T$_N$ as well as anomalous structural effects in the paramagnetic phase.

We present a combination of ab initio calculations, magnetic Compton scattering and polarized neutron experiments, which elucidate the density distribution of unpaired electrons in the kagome staircase system Co3V2O8. Ab initio wave functions were used to calculate the spin densities in real and momentum space, which show good agreement with the respective experiments. It has been found that the spin polarized orbitals are equally distributed between the t2g and the eg levels for the spine (s) Co ions, while the eg orbitals of the cross-tie (c) Co ions only represent 30% of the atomic spin density. Furthermore, the results reveal that the magnetic moments of the cross-tie Co ions, which are significantly smaller than those of the spine Co ions in the zero-field ferromagnetic structure, do not saturate by applying an external magnetic field of 2 T along the easy axis a, but that the increasing bulk magnetization originates from induced magnetic moments on the O and V sites. The refined individual magnetic moments are mu(Co_c)=1.54(4) mu_B, mu(Co_s)=2.87(3) mu_B, mu(V)=0.41(4) mu_B, mu(O1)=0.05(5) mu_B, mu(O2)=0.35(5) mu_B, and; mu(O3)=0.36(5) mu_B combining to the same macroscopic magnetization value, which was previously only attributed to the Co ions.

The crystal structure of LnFeAsO$_{1-y}$ (Ln = La, Nd) has been studied by the powder neutron diffraction technique. The superconducting phase diagram of NdFeAsO$_{1-y}$ is established as a function of oxygen content which is determined by Rietveld refinement. The small As-Fe bond length suggests that As and Fe atoms are connected covalently. FeAs$_4$-tetrahedrons transform toward a regular shape with increasing oxygen deficiency. Superconducting transition temperatures seem to attain maximum values for regular FeAs$_4$-tetrahedrons.

Combining infrared reflectivity, transport, susceptibility and several diffraction techniques, we find compelling evidence that CaCrO3 is a rare case of a metallic and antiferromagnetic transition-metal oxide with a three-dimensional electronic structure. LSDA calculations correctly describe the metallic behavior as well as the anisotropic magnetic ordering pattern of C type: The high Cr valence state induces via sizeable pd hybridization remarkably strong next-nearest neighbor interactions stabilizing this ordering. The subtle balance of magnetic interactions gives rise to magneto-elastic coupling, explaining pronounced structural anomalies observed at the magnetic ordering transition.

The central star of this nebula has an observed intense magnetic field and the fast wind is no longer present, indicating that a back flow process has probably developed. Long-slit, spatially resolved echelle spectra have been obtained across the main body of NGC 1360 and over its system of bipolar jets. Deep images of the knotty structures of the jets have also been obtained. The data allow a detailed study of the structure and kinematics of this object and the results are modeled considering the effects of a magnetic collimation process in the development of the nebula and then switching off the fast stellar wind to follow its evolution to its current state. In the R1/2D1/2MnO3 manganites (R: rare earth, D: divalent cation), the structural phase transition at Tco is commonly interpreted as a concomitant charge and orbital ordering (CO/OO) process driven by a cooperative Jahn-Teller effect and Coulomb repulsion forces. Full crystal structure refinement, from a neutron diffraction experiment below Tco on a Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3 single crystal, gives us a model for the displacement of atoms with respect to the high temperature (HT) phase that invalidates the standard model based on the CO/OO picture. An alternative picture is that the phase transition and charge localization at Tco arise from a spatially ordered condensation of ferromagnetic Mn-Mn pairs, in which Mn atoms keeps an intermediate valence state., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, revetex4
