1. Breeding and hibernation of captive meadow jumping mice (Zapus hudsonius).

Abstract: Hibernating mammals exhibit unique metabolic and physiological phenotypes that have potential applications in medicine or spaceflight, yet our understanding of the genetic basis and molecular mechanisms of hibernation is limited. The meadow jumping mouse, a small North American hibernator, exhibits traits-including a short generation time-that would facilitate genetic approaches to hibernation research. Here we report the collection, captive breeding, and laboratory hibernation of meadow jumping mice. Captive breeders in our colony produced a statistically significant excess of male offspring and a large number of all-male and all-female litters. We confirmed that short photoperiod induced pre-hibernation fattening, and cold ambient temperature facilitated entry into hibernation. During pre-hibernation fattening, food consumption exhibited non-linear dependence on both body mass and temperature, such that food consumption was greatest in the heaviest animals at the coldest temperatures. Meadow jumping mice exhibited a strong circadian rhythm of nightly activity that was disrupted during the hibernation interval. We conclude that it is possible to study hibernation phenotypes using captive-bred meadow jumping mice in a laboratory setting.

Abstract: The cross section of atomic electron Compton scattering γ+e→γ′+e′ was measured in the 4.400–5.475 GeV photon beam energy region by the PrimEx collaboration at Jefferson Lab with an accuracy of 2.6% and less. The results are consistent with theoretical predictions that include next-to-leading order radiative corrections. The measurements provide the first high precision test of this elementary QED process at beam energies greater than 0.1 GeV.

3. Detecting entanglement can be more effective with inequivalent mutually unbiased bases

Abstract: Mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) provide a standard tool in the verification of quantum states, especially when harnessing a complete set for optimal quantum state tomography. In this work, we investigate the detection of entanglement via inequivalent sets of MUBs, with a particular focus on unextendible MUBs. These are bases for which an additional unbiased basis cannot be constructed and, consequently, are unsuitable for quantum state verification. Here, we show that unextendible MUBs, as well as other inequivalent sets in higher dimensions, can be more effective in the verification of entanglement. Furthermore, we provide an efficient and systematic method to search for inequivalent MUBs and show that such sets occur regularly within the Heisenberg–Weyl MUBs, as the dimension increases. Our findings are particularly useful for experimentalists since they demonstrate that a clever selection of MUBs allows for entanglement detection with fewer measurements.

Abstract: We have performed precision measurements of the double-spin virtual-photon asymmetry A1 on the neutron in the deep inelastic scattering regime, using an open-geometry, large-acceptance spectrometer and a longitudinally and transversely polarized 3He target. Our data cover a wide kinematic range 0.277≤x≤0.548 at an average Q2 value of 3.078 (GeV/c)2, doubling the available high-precision neutron data in this x range. We have combined our results with world data on proton targets to make a leading-order extraction of the ratio of polarized-to-unpolarized parton distribution functions for up quarks and for down quarks in the same kinematic range. Our data are consistent with a previous observation of an A1n zero crossing near x=0.5. We find no evidence of a transition to a positive slope in (Δd+Δd¯)/(d+d¯) up to x=0.548. Abstract: In tissue engineering applications, sacrificial molding of hydrogel monoliths is a versatile technique for creating 3D molds to control tissue morphology. Previous sacrificial templates fabricated by serial processes such as solvent casting and thermal extrusion/fiber drawing can be used to effectively mold internal geometries within rapidly polymerizing, bulk curing hydrogels. However, they display poorer performance in controlling the geometry of diffusion limited, ionically cross-linked hydrogels, such as alginate. Here, we describe the use of poly(vinyl alcohol)-calcium salt templates (PVOH-Ca) fabricated by micro-injection molding, a parallel mass-production process, to conveniently cast internal geometries within both bulk curing hydrogels and ionically cross-linked alginate hydrogels. Calcium salt solubility was discovered to be a critical factor in optimizing the polymer composite’s manufacturability, mechanical properties, and the quantity of calcium released upon template dissolution. Metrological and computed tomography (CT) analysis showed that the template’s calcium release enables precise casting of microscale channel geometries within alginate hydrogels (6.4 ± 7.2% average error). Assembly of modular PVOH-Ca templates to mold 3D channel networks within alginate hydrogels is presented to demonstrate engineering scalability. Moreover, the platform is used to create hydrogel molds for engineering human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-derived neuroepithelial organoids of a microscale, biomimetic cylindrical morphology. Thus, injection molded PVOH-Ca templates facilitate customization of hydrogel sacrificial molding, which can be used to generate 3D hydrogels with complex internal microscale architecture for diverse tissue engineering applications. Statement of Significance Sacrificial molding of hydrogel monoliths is a versatile technique for creating 3D molds for tissue engineering applications. Moreover, we demonstrate its use to engineer the morphology of hPSC-derived neuroepithelial organoids, and modular PVOH-Ca template designs can be assembled to enable scalable 3D customization of hydrogel internal architecture.

Abstract: We report a precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry A_{PV} in the elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from ^{208}Pb. We measure A_{PV}=550±16(stat)±8(syst) parts per billion, leading to an extraction of the neutral weak form factor F_{W}(Q^{2}=0.00616 GeV^{2})=0.368±0.013. Combined with our previous measurement, the extracted neutron skin thickness is R_{n}-R_{p}=0.283±0.071 fm. The result also yields the first significant direct measurement of the interior weak density of ^{208}Pb: ρ_{W}^{0}=-0.0796±0.0036(exp)±0.0013(theo) fm^{-3} leading to the interior baryon density ρ_{b}^{0}=0.1480±0.0036(exp)±0.0013(theo) fm^{-3}. The measurement accurately constrains the density dependence of the symmetry energy of nuclear matter near saturation density, with implications for the size and composition of neutron stars.

Abstract: Background Coding practices impact the recorded prevalence of disease. Sepsis, most commonly caused by pneumonia, remains a common cause of mortality worldwide. In April 2017, NHS Digital issued new guidance on coding of septicaemia. Following this, many hospitals reported an increase in mortality from sepsis. We hypothesised that this altered mortality was artefact due to changes in how primary admission diagnosis was recorded during processing of hospital data. Methods Hospital Episode Statistics from the Admitted Patient Care dataset for NHS hospitals in England, from April 2016 to March 2018 were included (twelve months before and after change in coding practices). Adult patients with an International Classification of Diseases 10 (ICD-10) code associated with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Clinical Classifications Software (CCS) class ‘Septicaemia (except in labour)’ recorded for an inpatient episode were identified. Patient comorbidities were assessed using ICD-10 codes recorded within the admission episode. Results 514,678 hospital episodes with a coded diagnosis of sepsis were studied. After the coding change, there was no increase in the number of episodes where sepsis was coded as a secondary diagnosis, but a significant increase in the number of episodes where sepsis was coded as the primary reason for admission, for all demographic factors studied (sex, ethnicity, social deprivation index). This was sustained for the whole study period. There were significant differences in the case-mix of patients with a primary diagnosis of septicaemia before and after the coding change, including the recorded prevalence of specific comorbidities such as asthma and lung cancer, and an increase in the proportion of patients with a primary diagnosis of sepsis who had any recorded respiratory disease. Reported differences in outcomes could be accounted for by this change in case-mix. Conclusion Changes in coding practices can cause important differences in the types of patients where the diagnosis of interest is recorded, which in turn can influence reported outcomes. The impact of any coding change should be considered carefully when reviewing longitudinal trends in outcomes for any disease where coding practice or diagnostic definitions have changed, within local reporting measures and also in published literature.

Abstract: Positron beams, both polarized and unpolarized, are identified as essential ingredients for the experimental programs at the next generation of lepton accelerators. In the context of the hadronic physics program at Jefferson Lab (JLab), positron beams are complementary, even essential, tools for a precise understanding of the electromagnetic structure of nucleons and nuclei, in both the elastic and deep-inelastic regimes. For instance, elastic scattering of polarized and unpolarized electrons and positrons from the nucleon enables a model independent determination of its electromagnetic form factors. Also, the deeply-virtual scattering of polarized and unpolarized electrons and positrons allows unambiguous separation of the different contributions to the cross section of the lepto-production of photons and of lepton-pairs, enabling an accurate determination of the nucleons and nuclei generalized parton distributions, and providing an access to the gravitational form factors. Abstract: Background Left ventricular (LV) function is a major determinant of long-term outcomes after valve replacement surgery. Although conventional (right ventricular) pacemaker therapy is life-saving, it may cause heart failure (HF). Aims To determine whether permanent pacemaker implantation (PPI) confers a risk of HF in surgical valve recipients. Methods The primary endpoint of HF hospitalization and the secondary endpoints of total mortality and total mortality / HF hospitalizations were compared in valve recipients with and without PPI. Traditional as well as multi-state, multivariable modelling was used to assess the influence of PPI on clinical outcomes. Results Amongst patients (n = 135,242) undergoing a first aortic (AVR; n = 111,674), mitral (MVR; n = 18,402) valve replacement, or AVR + MVR (n = 5,166) over 14 years in 176 centre, 12,952 (10.6%) had a PPI at any time during follow-up and 5,805 (4.3%) underwent PPI postoperatively. After 3.9 yrs (median, interquartile range: 6.1), heart failure (HF) hospitalizations (HR: 1.47, 95% C.I. 1.36-1.59), total mortality (HR: 1.10, 95% C.I. 1.05-1.16) and total mortality or HF hospitalizations (HR: 1.17, 95% C.I. 1.12-1.22; see figure) were higher in patients with post-operative PPI than in patients without. Multi-state modelling revealed that the transition hazard from PPI at any time to HF hospitalizations was markedly higher (transition hazard rate: 0.29, 95% C.I. 0.24-0.36) than from valve replacement surgery to HF hospitalization. Conclusions After valve replacement surgery, PPI is associated with increased HF hospitalization and total mortality, particularly after dual valve replacements. Abstract Figure.

Abstract: The MOLLER experiment proposed at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility plans a precision low energy determination of the weak mixing angle via the measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in the scattering of high energy longitudinally polarized electrons from electrons bound in a liquid hydrogen target (M{\o}ller scattering). A relative measure of the scattering rate is planned to be obtained by intercepting the M{\o}ller scattered electrons with a circular array of thin fused silica tiles attached to air light guides, which facilitate the transport of Cherenkov photons generated within the tiles to photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). The scattered flux will also pass through the light guides of downstream tiles, generating additional Cherenkov as well as scintillation light and is a potential background. In order to estimate the rate of these backgrounds, a gas-filled tube detector was designed and deployed in an electron beam at the MAMI facility at Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, Germany. Described in this paper is the design of a detector to measure separately the scintillation and Cherenkov responses of gas mixtures from relativistic electrons, the results of studies of several gas mixtures with comparisons to simulations, and conclusions about the implications for the design of the MOLLER detector apparatus., Comment: Published in NIM.A

Abstract: Background Bariatric surgery is an accepted treatment option for severe obesity. Previous analysis of the independently collected Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data for outcomes after bariatric surgery demonstrated a 30-day postoperative mortality rate of 0·3 per cent in the English National Health Service (NHS). However, there have been no published mortality data for bariatric procedures performed since 2008. This study aimed to assess mortality related to bariatric surgery in England from 2009. Methods HES data were used to identify all patients who had primary bariatric surgery from 2009 to 2016. Clinical codes were used selectively to identify all primary bariatric procedures but exclude revision or conversion procedures and operations for malignant or other benign disease. The primary outcome measures were HES in-hospital and Office for National Statistics (ONS) 30-day mortality after discharge. Results A total of 41 241 primary bariatric procedures were carried out in the NHS between 2009 and 2016, with 29 in-hospital deaths (0·07 per cent). The 30-day mortality rate after discharge was 0·08 per cent (32 of 41 241). Both the in-hospital and 30-day mortality rates after discharge demonstrated a downward trend over the study period. Conclusion Overall in-hospital and 30-day mortality rates remain very low after primary bariatric surgery. An increased uptake of bariatric surgery within the English NHS has been safe.

Abstract: Background Women are underrepresented in cardiac resynchronization therapy ( CRT ) trials. Some studies suggest that women fare better than men after CRT . We sought to explore clinical outcomes in women and men undergoing CRT ‐defibrillation or CRT‐pacing in real‐world clinical practice. Methods and Results A national database (Hospital Episode Statistics for England) was used to quantify clinical outcomes in 43 730 patients (women: 10 890 [24.9%]; men: 32 840 [75.1%]) undergoing CRT over 7.6 years, (median follow‐up 2.2 years, interquartile range, 1–4 years). In analysis of the total population, the primary end point of total mortality (adjusted hazard ratio [ aHR ], 0.73; 95% CI, 0.69–0.76) and the secondary end point of total mortality or heart failure hospitalization ( aHR , 0.79, 95% CI 0.75–0.82) were lower in women, independent of known confounders. Total mortality ( aHR , 0.73; 95% CI, 0.70–0.76) and total mortality or heart failure hospitalization ( aHR , 0.79; 95% CI, 0.75–0.82) were lower for CRT ‐defibrillation than for CRT ‐pacing. In analyses of patients with ( aHR , 0.89; 95% CI, 0.80–0.98) or without ( aHR , 0.70; 95% CI, 0.66–0.73) a myocardial infarction, women had a lower total mortality. In sex‐specific analyses, total mortality was lower after CRT ‐defibrillation in women ( aHR , 0.83; P =0.013) and men ( aHR , 0.69; P Conclusions Compared with men, women lived longer and were less likely to be hospitalized for heart failure after CRT . In both sexes, CRT ‐defibrillation was superior to CRT ‐pacing with respect to survival and heart failure hospitalization. The longest survival after CRT was observed in women without a history of myocardial infarction.

Abstract: The cross section of atomic electron Compton scattering $\gamma + e \rightarrow \gamma^\prime + e^\prime $ was measured in the 4.40--5.475 GeV photon beam energy region by the {\em PrimEx} collaboration at Jefferson Lab with an accuracy of 2\% and less. The results are consistent with theoretical predictions that include next-to-leading order radiative corrections. Abstract: Aims Randomized controlled trials have shown that cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) prolongs survival in patients with heart failure. No studies have explored survival after CRT in relation to individuals in the general population (relative survival, RS). We sought to determine observed and RS after CRT in a nationwide cohort undergoing CRT. Methods and results A national administrative database was used to quantify observed mortality for patients undergoing CRT. Relative survival (RS) was quantified using life tables. In 50 084 patients [age 72.1 ± 11.6 years (mean ± standard deviation)] undergoing CRT with (CRT-D) (n = 25 273) or without (CRT-P) defibrillation (n = 24 811) over 8.8 years (median follow-up 2.7 years, interquartile range 1.3-4.8), expected survival decreased with age. Device type, male sex, ischaemic heart disease, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease predicted excess mortality. In multivariate analyses, excess mortality (analogue of RS) was lower after CRT-D than after CRT-P in all patients [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 0.80, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.76-0.84] as well as in subgroups with (aHR 0.79, 95% CI 0.74-0.84) or without (aHR 0.82, 95% CI 0.74-0.91) ischaemic heart disease. A Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) ≥3 portended a higher excess mortality (aHR 3.04, 95% CI 2.76-3.34). Relative survival was higher in 2015-2017 than in 2009-2011 (aHR 0.64, 95% CI 0.59-0.69). Conclusion Reference RS data after CRT is presented. Sex, ischaemic heart disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and CCI were major determinants of RS after CRT. CRT-D was associated with a higher RS than CRT-P in patients with or without ischaemic heart disease. Relative survival after CRT improved from 2009 to 2017.

Abstract: Thermoplastic polyurethane is one of the most versatile thermoplastic materials being used in a myriad of industrial and commercial applications. Thermoplastic polyurethane foams are finding new applications in various industries including the furniture, automotive, sportswear, and packaging industries because of their easy processability and desirable customizable properties. In this study, three methods of manufacturing injection molded low density foams were investigated and compared: (1) using chemical blowing agents, (2) using microcellular injection molding with N2 as the blowing agent, and (3) using a combination of supercritical gas-laden pellets injection molding foaming technology and microcellular injection molding processes using co-blowing agents CO2 and N2. Thermal, rheological, microscopic imaging, and mechanical testing were carried out on the molded samples with increasing amounts of blowing agents. The results showed that the use of physical blowing agents yielded softer foams, while the use of CO2 and N2 as co-blowing agents helped to manufacture foams with lower bulk densities, better microstructures, and lower hysteresis loss ratios. Chemical blowing agent-foamed thermoplastic polyurethane showed an earlier onset of degradation. The average cell size decreased and the cell density increased with the use of co-blowing agents. A further increase in gas saturation levels showed a degradation of microstructure by cell coalescence.

Abstract: Fabrication of small-diameter vascular scaffolds has been a challenge in recent years, especially scaffolds with multiple layers. In this study, two approaches were proposed to fabricate triple-layered vascular scaffolds based on the electrospinning method and the thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) method. It was found that the electrospun fibers had a compact fibrous structure that provided good mechanical properties. The porous TIPS layer had high porosity and pore interconnectivity to facilitate cell penetration; however, this structure alone could not ensure sufficient mechanical properties for surgical applications. The triple-layered scaffolds, which consisted of electrospun TPU, TIPS TPU, and electrospun PPC layers, showed the highest mechanical properties and best structure and dimensions for vascular graft applications. Preliminary endothelial cell culture results showed that the cells could attach to and proliferate on the inside surface of the scaffolds with >95% viability.

Abstract: Triple-layered small diameter vascular scaffolds, which consisted of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and silk, were fabricated in this study for the first time by combining electrospinning, braiding, and thermally induced phase separation methods. These novel vascular scaffolds, which possess three layers of different structures (nanofibrous inner layer, woven silk filament middle layer, and porous outer layer), can mimic the structure of native blood vessels. The vascular scaffolds have a desirable toe region in tensile tests and sufficient suture retention and burst pressure for vascular graft applications. Endothelial cell culture tests showed that a cell layer could form on the inner surface of the scaffold with high cell viability and favorable morphology.

Abstract: The work was intended to explore the effect of the widely available cationic polymer polyethylenimine (PEI) on small diameter poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL) blood vessel grafts. PEI was blended with PCL and electrospun into nanofibrous vascular scaffolds. The morphologies, wettabilities, mechanical properties, and biological activities of the PCL/PEI electrospun nanofibers were investigated. It was found that by increasing the content of PEI to 5% within the scaffolds, the fiber diameters decreased from 469.7 ± 212.1 to 282.5 ± 107.1 nm, the water contact angle was reduced from 126.6 ± 1.1° to 27.6 ± 3.9°, while the Young’s modulus increased from 2.0 ± 0.2 to 4.1 ± 0.1 MPa, the suture retention strength increased from 4.2 ± 0.4 to 6.1 ± 0.7 N, and the burst pressure increased from 801.2 ± 14.1 to 926.2 ± 22.8 mmHg. The in vitro evaluations demonstrated that the nanofibers containing 2% PEI promoted the attachment and proliferation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).

Abstract: The Jefferson Laboratory PrimEx Collaboration has developed and implemented a method to control the tagged photon flux in photoprocluction experiments at the 1% level over the photon energy range from 4.9 to 5.5 GeV. This method has been successfully implemented in a high precision measurement of the neutral pion lifetime. Here, we outline the experimental equipment and the analysis techniques used to accomplish this. These include the use of a total absorption counter for absolute flux calibration, a pair spectrometer for online relative flux monitoring, and a new method for post-bremsstrahlung electron counting. Abstract: Symmetry permeates nature and is fundamental to all laws of physics. One example is parity (mirror) symmetry, which implies that flipping left and right does not change the laws of physics. Laws for electromagnetism, gravity and the subatomic strong force respect parity symmetry, but the subatomic weak force does not. Historically, parity violation in electron scattering has been important in establishing (and now testing) the standard model of particle physics. One particular set of quantities accessible through measurements of parity-violating electron scattering are the effective weak couplings C2q, sensitive to the quarks' chirality preference when participating in the weak force, which have been measured directly only once in the past 40 years. Here we report a measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in electron-quark scattering, which yields a determination of 2C2u - C2d (where u and d denote up and down quarks, respectively) with a precision increased by a factor of five relative to the earlier result. These results provide evidence with greater than 95 per cent confidence that the C2q couplings are non-zero, as predicted by the electroweak theory. They lead to constraints on new parity-violating interactions beyond the standard model, particularly those due to quark chirality. Whereas contemporary particle physics research is focused on high-energy colliders such as the Large Hadron Collider, our results provide specific chirality information on electroweak theory that is difficult to obtain at high energies. Our measurement is relatively free of ambiguity in its interpretation, and opens the door to even more precise measurements in the future.

Abstract: The DUNE IDR describes the proposed physics program and technical designs of the DUNE Far Detector modules in preparation for the full TDR to be published in 2019. It is intended as an intermediate milestone on the path to a full TDR, justifying the technical choices that flow down from the high-level physics goals through requirements at all levels of the Project. These design choices will enable the DUNE experiment to make the ground-breaking discoveries that will help to answer fundamental physics questions. Volume 1 contains an executive summary that describes the general aims of this document. The remainder of this first volume provides a more detailed description of the DUNE physics program that drives the choice of detector technologies. It also includes concise outlines of two overarching systems that have not yet evolved to consortium structures: computing and calibration. Volumes 2 and 3 of this IDR describe, for the single-phase and dual-phase technologies, respectively, each detector module's subsystems, the technical coordination required for its design, construction, installation, and integration, and its organizational structure.

25. Occurrence and characteristics of fastidious Campylobacteraceae species in porcine samples

Abstract: This study investigated the prevalence and characteristics of Campylobacteraceae including a range of fastidious species in porcine samples. Over a thirteen month period caecal contents (n=402) and pork carcass swabs (n=401) were collected from three pork abattoirs and pork products (n=399) were purchased at point of sale in the Republic of Ireland. Campylobacteraceae isolates were recovered by enrichment, membrane filtration and incubation in antibiotic free media under a modified atmosphere (3% O2, 5% H2, 10% CO2 and 82% N2). Campylobacteraceae isolates were identified as either genus Campylobacter or Arcobacter and then selected species were identified by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Campylobacteraceae were isolated from 103 (26%) caecal samples, 42 (10%) carcass swabs, and 59 (15%) pork products. Campylobacter coli was the most commonly isolated species found in (37%) all sample types but many fastidious species were also isolated including Campylobacter concisus (10%), Arcobacter butzleri (8%), Campylobacter helveticus (8%), Campylobacter mucosalis (6%), Arcobacter cryaerophilus (3%), Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus (1%), Campylobacter jejuni subsp. jejuni (1%), Campylobacter lari (0.5%), Campylobacter curvus (0.5%) and Arcobacter skirrowii (0.5%). Among all isolates, 83% contained cadF and 98% flaA. In this study 35% of porcine C. coli were resistant to ciprofloxacin but none of the fastidious species demonstrated any resistance to this drug. The level of resistance to erythromycin was very high (up to 100%) in C. concisus and C. helveticus and this is a real concern as this is the current empiric drug of choice for treatment of severe gastroenteritic Campylobacter infections. The study shows that there is a much wider range of fastidious Campylobacteraceae present in porcine samples than previously assumed with C. concisus the second most common species isolated. The majority of fastidious Campylobacteraceae isolates obtained contained virulence genes and antibiotic resistance indicating potential public health significance.

Abstract: We report on the results of the E06-014 experiment performed at Jefferson Lab in Hall A, where a precision measurement of the twist-3 matrix element d_2 of the neutron (d^n_2) was conducted. The quantity dn_2 represents the average color Lorentz force a struck quark experiences in a deep inelastic electron scattering event off a neutron due to its interaction with the hadronizing remnants. This color force was determined from a linear combination of the third moments of the ^3He spin structure functions, g_1 and g_2, after nuclear corrections had been applied to these moments. The structure functions were obtained from a measurement of the unpolarized cross section and of double-spin asymmetries in the scattering of a longitudinally polarized electron beam from a transversely and a longitudinally polarized ^3He target. The measurement kinematics included two average Q^2 bins of 3.2 GeV^2 and 4.3 GeV^2, and Bjorken-x 0.25≤ x ≤0.90 covering the deep inelastic and resonance regions. We have found that d^n_2 is small and negative for ⟨Q^2⟩=3.2 GeV^2, and even smaller for ⟨Q^2⟩=4.3 GeV^2, consistent with the results of a lattice QCD calculation. The twist-4 matrix element f^n_2 was extracted by combining our measured d^n_2 with the world data on the first moment in x of g^n_1, Γ^n_1. We found f^n_2 to be roughly an order of magnitude larger than dn2. Utilizing the extracted d^n_2 and f^n_2 data, we separated the Lorentz color force into its electric and magnetic components, F^(y,n)_E and F^(y,n)_B, and found them to be equal and opposite in magnitude, in agreement with the predictions from an instanton model but not with those from QCD sum rules. Furthermore, using the measured double-spin asymmetries, we have extracted the virtual photon-nucleon asymmetry on the neutron A^n_1, the structure function ratio g^n_1/F^n_1, and the quark ratios (Δu+Δu)/(u+u) and (Δd+Δd)/(d+d). These results were found to be consistent with deep-inelastic scattering world data and with the prediction of the constituent quark model but at odds with the perturbative quantum chromodynamics predictions at large x.

Abstract: The Polarized Electrons for Polarized Positrons experiment at the injector of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility has demonstrated for the first time the efficient transfer of polarization from electrons to positrons produced by the polarized bremsstrahlung radiation induced by a polarized electron beam in a high-$Z$ target. Positron polarization up to 82\% have been measured for an initial electron beam momentum of 8.19~MeV/$c$, limited only by the electron beam polarization. This technique extends polarized positron capabilities from GeV to MeV electron beams, and opens access to polarized positron beam physics to a wide community., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: We report the measurement of beam-target double-spin asymmetries ALT in the inclusive production of identified hadrons, e +³He↑ → h + X, using a longitudinally polarized 5.9 GeV electron beam and a transversely polarized ³He target. Hadrons (π±, K± and proton) were detected at 16° with an average momentum h>=2.35 GeV/c and a transverse momentum (pT) coverage from 0.60 to 0.68 GeV/c. Asymmetries from the ³He target were observed to be non-zero for π± production when the target was polarized transversely in the horizontal plane. The π⁺ and π⁻ asymmetries have opposite signs, analogous to the behavior of ALT in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering.

Abstract: Objectives: Healthcare expenditure per-capita in the USA is higher than in England. We hypothesised that clinical outcomes after cardiac revascularisation are better in the USA. We compared costs and outcomes of patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in England and New York State (NYS). Methods: Costs and total mortality were assessed using the Hospital Episode Statistics for England and the Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System for NYS. Outcomes after a first CABG or PCI were assessed in patients undergoing a first CABG (n=142 969) or PCI (n=431 416). Abstract: New results are reported from a measurement of π^{0} electroproduction near threshold using the p(e,e^{'}p)π^{0} reaction. The experiment was designed to determine precisely the energy dependence of s- and p-wave electromagnetic multipoles as a stringent test of the predictions of chiral perturbation theory (ChPT). The data were taken with an electron beam energy of 1192 MeV using a two-spectrometer setup in Hall A at Jefferson Lab. For the first time, complete coverage of the ϕ_{π}^{*} and θ_{π}^{*} angles in the pπ^{0} center of mass was obtained for invariant energies above threshold from 0.5 up to 15 MeV. The 4-momentum transfer Q^{2} coverage ranges from 0.05 to 0.155 (GeV/c)^{2} in fine steps. A simple phenomenological analysis of our data shows strong disagreement with p-wave predictions from ChPT for Q^{2}0.07 (GeV/c)^{2}, while the s-wave predictions are in reasonable agreement.

Abstract: Triple layered small diameter vascular scaffolds, which consisted of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and silk, were fabricated in this study for the first time by combining electrospinning, braiding, and thermally induced phase separation methods. These novel vascular scaffolds, which possess three layers of different structures (nanofibrous inner layer, woven silk filament middle layer, and porous outer layer) have a desired toe region in the tensile test and sufficient suture retention and burst pressure for vascular graft applications. The endothelia cell culture tests showed that a cell layer could form on the inner surface of a scaffold with high cell viability. Furthermore, the cells showed favorable morphology on the scaffold.

Abstract: An experiment to measure single-spin asymmetries of semi-inclusive production of charged pions in deep-inelastic scattering on a transversely polarized $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ target was performed at Jefferson Laboratory in the kinematic region of $0.16lxl0.35$ and $1.4l{Q}^{2}l2.7$ ${\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}$. Pretzelosity asymmetries on $^{3}\mathrm{He}$, which are expressed as the convolution of the ${h}_{1T}^{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ transverse-momentum-dependent distribution functions and the Collins fragmentation functions in the leading order, were measured for the first time. Under the effective polarization approximation, we extracted the corresponding neutron asymmetries from the measured $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ asymmetries and cross-section ratios between the proton and $^{3}\mathrm{He}$. Our results show that both ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$ on $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ and on neutron pretzelosity asymmetries are consistent with zero within experimental uncertainties.

Abstract: In tissue engineering, it is desirable to exhibit spatial control of tissue morphology and cell fate in culture on the micron scale. Culture substrates presenting grafted poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) brushes can be used to achieve this task by creating microscale, non-fouling and cell adhesion resistant regions as well as regions where cells participate in biospecific interactions with covalently tethered ligands. To engineer complex tissues using such substrates, it will be necessary to sequentially pattern multiple PEG brushes functionalized to confer differential bioactivities and aligned in microscale orientations that mimic in vivo niches. Microcontact printing (μCP) is a versatile technique to pattern such grafted PEG brushes, but manual μCP cannot be performed with microscale precision. Thus, we combined advanced robotics with soft-lithography techniques and emerging surface chemistry reactions to develop a robotic microcontact printing (R-μCP)-assisted method for fabricating culture substrates with complex, microscale, and highly ordered patterns of PEG brushes presenting orthogonal ‘click’ chemistries. Here, we describe in detail the workflow to manufacture such substrates.

Abstract: We report the first measurement of the target-normal single-spin asymmetry in deep-inelastic scattering from the inclusive reaction ^3He^↑ (e,e′) X on a polarized ^3He gas target. Assuming time-reversal invariance, this asymmetry is strictly zero in the Born approximation but can be nonzero if two-photon-exchange contributions are included. The experiment, conducted at Jefferson Lab using a 5.89 GeV electron beam, covers a range of 1.7 2 GeV, which is nonzero at the 2.89σ level. Our measured asymmetry agrees both in sign and magnitude with a two-photon-exchange model prediction that uses input from the Sivers transverse momentum distribution obtained from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering.

Abstract: Double-spin asymmetries and absolute cross sections were measured at large Bjorken x (0.25≤x≤0.90), in both the deep-inelastic and resonance regions, by scattering longitudinally polarized electrons at beam energies of 4.7 and 5.9 GeV from a transversely and longitudinally polarized ^3He target. In this dedicated experiment, the spin structure function g^3He_2 was determined with precision at large x, and the neutron twist-3 matrix element dn2 was measured at ⟨Q2⟩ of 3.21 and 4.32 GeV^2/c^2, with an absolute precision of about 10^(−5). Our results are found to be in agreement with lattice QCD calculations and resolve the disagreement found with previous data at ⟨Q^2⟩=5 GeV^2/c^2. Combining d^n_2 and a newly extracted twist-4 matrix element f^n_2, the average neutron color electric and magnetic forces were extracted and found to be of opposite sign and about 30 MeV/fm in magnitude.

Abstract: Lameness and lesions in the claws of 31 autumn-calving Holstein Friesian dairy cows were recorded from before their first-calving until their fifth lactation. The animals were managed by the same herdsman and housed adjacently in the same building in one of two herds grazed either on clover-rich pastures (herd 1) or on conventional ryegrass (herd 2). All four hooves were examined routinely four times during each lactation, and claw lesions were scored for severity and drawn on hoof maps. Heel erosion and infectious skin conditions of the hoof were also recorded, and hoof conformation, hardness, and growth and wear were measured. The animals9 locomotion was scored weekly throughout the winter housing period and any observed to be lame were examined to determine the cause. The development of lesions was modelled by using hierarchic smoothing splines. There was no significant effect of herd except on the prevalence of lameness in lactation 2 when the incidence of (inter)digital dermatitis was higher in herd 2. Abstract: Plant uptake is one of the major pathways by which sludge-borne potentially toxic metals enter the food chain. This study examined the accumulation of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in wheat, carrots and spinach grown on soils from 13 sites previously amended with sewage sludge. Winter wheat, carrots and spinach were grown consecutively under field like conditions. The results showed that plant availability of heavy metals differed widely among the crop species. The accumulation of Cd, Ni and Zn in the plants showed the greatest increases compared to their background levels. The Cu and Pb accumulation in the plants grown on sludge-amended soils showed only small increases compared to those grown on uncontaminated soils. Multiple regression analysis of various soil properties showed that the surest way to control the accumulation of metals in food plants is by controlling their concentrations in the soils. Furthermore, soils with a non-acidic pH and a clayey texture tended to achieve better control of metal accumulation in food plants compared to those with an acidic reaction and a coarse texture. Metal concentrations in the plants generally correlated well with those extracted from soils in 0·005 M DTPA, 0·05 M EDTA-(Na)2, 1 M NH4NO3 and 0·05 M CaCl2. The EDTA, however, proved to be a more reliable and consistent test in predicting the accumulation of metals in the plants. The results also showed that liming soils to pH 7 effectively reduced the metal contents in carrots and spinach, but liming to pH 6·5 had little effect on metal concentrations in wheat grain. © 1997 SCI.

Abstract: Factorial experimental designs were employed to study the major factors governing the gelation of milkl κ-carrageenan mixtures. The relative effects of carrageenan concentration, pH, ionic strength, casein proteins, whey proteins and κ-casein genotype on the mechanical properties of the gels were studied using dynamic rheological techniques. Gel transition temperature was governed mainly by ionic strength and carrageenan concentration whilst gel strength was influenced by carrageenan concentration and pH. It was found that the relative importance of the milk proteins to gelation varied with carrageenan concentration. It appeared that at high levels of κ-carrageenan (i.e. 0.1% w/w) gelation was predominately the result of association of κ-carrageenan helices to produce self-supporting gels. Milk proteins appeared to have little effect at high levels of carrageenan. However, milk proteins interfered with gel formation at carrageenan concentrations lower than 0.018% w/w, thus increasing the amount of micellar casein by twofold inhibited gelation. Serum proteins also suppressed gelation, albeit at lower κ-carrageenan concentrations. These results suggested that, in the presence of milk proteins, gel formation involved mainly carrageenan—carrageenan cross-linkages and not carrageenan—casein or casein-casein linkages. Nevertheless, the possibility of a strong interaction between κ-carrageenan and κ-casein on the micelles which has to be satisfied first, leaving insufficient carrageenan to provide network forming capability, cannot be ruled out.

Abstract: We report the first measurement of the target-normal single-spin asymmetry in deep-inelastic scattering from the inclusive reaction 3)He(↑)(e,e')X on a polarized (3)He gas target. Assuming time-reversal invariance, this asymmetry is strictly zero in the Born approximation but can be nonzero if two-photon-exchange contributions are included. The experiment, conducted at Jefferson Lab using a 5.89 GeV electron beam, covers a range of 1.7W2.9 GeV, 1.0Q(2)4.0 GeV(2) and 0.16x0.65. Neutron asymmetries were extracted using the effective nucleon polarization and measured proton-to-(3)He cross-section ratios. The measured neutron asymmetries are negative with an average value of (-1.09±0.38)×10(-2) for invariant mass W2 GeV, which is nonzero at the 2.89σ level. Our measured asymmetry agrees both in sign and magnitude with a two-photon-exchange model prediction that uses input from the Sivers transverse momentum distribution obtained from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering.

Abstract: Multicomponent poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) brushes (i.e., ≥ 2 adjacent PEG brushes) can be used to engineer culture substrates with microscale, nonfouling regions decorated with covalently immobilized ligands that mediate biospecific interactions. However, synthesizing such brushes with orthogonal immobilization chemistries to permit differential biofunctionalization is nontrivial and often requires synthesis of PEG-co-polymers. To simplify synthesis and enhance the versatility of such substrates, we developed a protocol for generating orthogonal click-functionalized multicomponent PEG brushes using sequential nucleophilic substitutions by sodium azide, ethanolamine, and propargylamine. The novel application of propargylamine-mediated substitution functionalizes PEG brushes with acetylene groups, and for the first time, ethanolamine-mediated substitution is shown to be sufficient for passivating the "living" polymer chain ends between brush synthesis steps. Thus, our multicomponent PEG brushes present dual orthogonal chemistries (i.e., azido and acetylene groups) for ligand immobilization via versatile copper-free click reactions, which are useful for in situ surface modifications during cell culture.

Abstract: We report on parity-violating asymmetries in the nucleon resonance region measured using $5 - 6$ GeV longitudinally polarized electrons scattering off an unpolarized deuterium target. These results are the first parity-violating asymmetry data in the resonance region beyond the $\Delta(1232)$, and provide a verification of quark-hadron duality in the nucleon electroweak $\gamma Z$ interference structure functions at the (10-15)% level. The results are of particular interest to models relevant for calculating the $\gamma Z$ box-diagram corrections to elastic parity-violating electron scattering measurements., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, to appear in Phys. Abstract: We have measured the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry $A_n$ in the elastic scattering of 1-3 GeV transversely polarized electrons from $^1$H and for the first time from $^4$He, $^{12}$C, and $^{208}$Pb. For $^1$H, $^4$He and $^{12}$C, the measurements are in agreement with calculations that relate $A_n$ to the imaginary part of the two-photon exchange amplitude including inelastic intermediate states. Surprisingly, the $^{208}$Pb result is significantly smaller than the corresponding prediction using the same formalism. These results suggest that a systematic set of new $A_n$ measurements might emerge as a new and sensitive probe of the structure of heavy nuclei., 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted by PRL. v3: fixed one author name and affiliation, otherwise no change
