Search

Mrk 590 is a known changing-look AGN which almost turned off in 2012, and then in 2017 partially re-ignited into a repeat flaring state, unusual for an AGN. Our \emph{Swift} observations since 2013 allow us to characterise the accretion-generated emission and its reprocessing in the central engine of a changing-look AGN. The X-ray and UV variability amplitudes are higher than those typically observed in `steady-state' AGN at similar moderate accretion rates; instead, the variability is similar to that of highly accreting AGN. The unusually strong X-ray to UV correlation suggests that the UV-emitting region is directly illuminated by X-ray outbursts. We find evidence that the X-rays are reprocessed by two UV components, with the dominant one at $\sim$3 days and a faint additional reprocessor at near-zero lag. However, we exclude a significant contribution from diffuse broad line region continuum, known to contribute for bona-fide AGN. A near-zero lag is expected for a standard `lamp-post' disk reprocessing model with a driving continuum source near the black hole. That the overall UV response is dominated by the $\sim$3-day lagged component suggests a complicated reprocessing geometry, with most of the UV continuum not produced in a compact disk, as also found in recent studies of NGC 5548 and NGC 4151. Nonetheless, the observed flares display characteristic timescales of $\sim$100 rest-frame days, consistent with the expected thermal timescale in an accretion disk., Comment: 25 pages; published in MNRAS, Dec 2nd 2022. We present the discovery of highly-collimated radio jets spanning a total of 355 kpc around the nearby elliptical galaxy NGC 2663, and the possible first detection of recollimation on kiloparsec scales. The small distance to the galaxy (~28.5 Mpc) allows us to resolve portions of the jets to examine their structure. We combine multiwavelength data: radio observations by the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), and X-ray data from Chandra, Swift and SRG/eROSITA. We present intensity, rotation measure, polarisation, spectral index and X-ray environment maps. Regions of the southern jet show simultaneous narrowing and brightening, which can be interpreted as a signature of the recollimation of the jet by external, environmental pressure, though it is also consistent with an intermittent Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) or complex internal jet structure. AT2019pev is a nuclear transient in a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy at $z=0.096$. The archival ultraviolet, optical and infrared data showed features of both tidal disruption events (TDEs) and active galactic nuclei (AGNs), and its nature is not fully understood. We present detailed X-ray observations of AT2019pev taken with Swift, Chandra and NICER over 173 days of its evolution since the first Swift XRT epoch. The X-ray luminosity increases by a factor of five in five days from the first Swift XRT epoch to the lightcurve peak. The lightcurve decays by a factor of ten over $\sim$75 days and then flattens with a weak re-brightening trend at late times. The X-ray spectra show a "harder-when-brighter" trend before peak and a "harder-when-fainter" trend after peak, which may indicate a transition of accretion states. The archival ground-based optical observations show similar time evolution as the X-ray lightcurves. Beyond the seasonal limit of the ground-based observations, the Gaia lightcurve is rising toward an equally bright or brighter peak 223 days after the optical discovery. The project MOMO (Multiwavelength Observations and Modelling of OJ 287) was set up to test predictions of binary supermassive black hole (SMBH) scenarios and to understand disk-jet physics of the blazar OJ 287. After a correction, the precessing binary (PB) SMBH model predicted the next main outburst of OJ 287 in 2022 October, no longer in July, making the outburst well observable and the model testable. We have densely covered this period in our ongoing multi-frequency radio, optical, UV, and X-ray monitoring. The predicted outburst was not detected. Instead, OJ 287 was at low optical-UV emission levels, declining further into November. The predicted thermal bremsstrahlung spectrum was not observed either, at any epoch. Further, applying scaling relations, we estimate a SMBH mass of OJ 287 of 10^8 M_sun. The latest in a sequence of deep low-states that recur every 1-2 yrs is used to determine an upper limit on the Eddington ratio and on the accretion-disk luminosity. This limit is at least a factor of 10 lower than required by the PB model with its massive primary SMBH of >10^{10} M_sun. All these results favor alternative binary SMBH models of OJ 287 that neither require strong orbital precession nor a very large mass of the primary SMBH., MNRAS Letter, in press

Mrk 1239 is a highly polarized NLS1 in the optical band, whose $0.3-3$ keV spectrum has remained remarkably consistent over more than two decades of observation. Previous analysis of this object suggested that the soft X-ray band was dominated by emission lines (collisionally and/or photoionized) from the distant host galaxy as the X-ray emission from the central engine was highly obscured. New XMM-Newton data of Mrk 1239 are presented here to investigate the soft X-ray band of this galaxy with high resolution. The first RGS spectra of this source reveal a plethora of ionized emission lines originating from two distinct plasmas, one collisionally ionized and the other photoionized at approximately equal brightness. The best fit model uses {\sc apec} and {\sc xstar} grids to account for the collisionally ionized and photoionized components, respectively. The fit improves significantly if the photoionized material is allowed to outflow at $\approx 500$ km s$^{-1}$, matching the outflow velocity of the forbidden O{\sc vii} emission line. From constraints on the ionization and density of the photoionized material we can estimate the location of it to be no further than a few pc from the central source, around the outer radius of the torus, which is consistent with the O{\sc vii}$(f)$ emission line. Properties of the collisionally ionized plasma are consistent with star formation rate (SFR) of $\approx 3 M_{\odot} \textrm{yr}^{-1}$, which is comparable with several previous measurements of the SFR in this galaxy., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 13 pages

We present a review of the topics of X-ray stellar tidal disruption events (TDEs) and changing-look active galactic nuclei (AGN). Stars approaching a supermassive black hole (SMBH) can be tidally disrupted and accreted. TDEs were first discovered in the X-ray regime and appear as luminous, giant-amplitude flares from inactive galaxies. The early X-ray observations with ROSAT also established the extreme X-ray spectral softness of these events with temperatures of order 50-100 eV that continues to be seen in the majority of more recently identified events. While the majority of X-ray TDEs has been identified from {\it inactive} galaxies and some showed the highest amplitudes of variability recorded from galaxy cores (amplitudes exceeding factors of 1000--6000), a small fraction of {\it active} galactic nuclei (AGN) has been found to be highly variable as well. In AGN, this so-called changing-look phenomenon often comes with a strong change in the optical broad emission lines, leading to Seyfert-type changes between class 1 and class 2. These two forms of activity represent the extremes of variability among active and quiescent galaxies, and have opened up a new window on understanding accretion physics under extreme conditions. Finally, we introduce the term ``frozen-look AGN'' to describe systems that show constant line emission despite strong/dramatic changes in the observed ionizing continuum. R.; Zielinski, P., OJ 287 is a BL Lacertae type quasar in which the active galactic nucleus (AGN) outshines the host galaxy by an order of magnitude. The only exception to this may be at minimum light when the AGN activity is so low that the host galaxy may make quite a considerable contribution to the photometric intensity of the source. Such a dip or a fade in the intensity of OJ 287 occurred in 2017 November, when its brightness was about 1.75 mag lower than the recent mean level. We compare the observations of this fade with similar fades in OJ 287 observed earlier in 1989, 1999, and 2010. It appears that there is a relatively strong reddening of the B− V colours of OJ 287 when its V-band brightness drops below magnitude 17. Similar changes are also seen in V− R, V− I, and R− I colours during these deep fades. These data support the conclusion that the total magnitude of the host galaxy is V = 18.0 ± 0.3, corresponding to MK = −26.5 ± 0.3 in the K-band. This is in agreement with the results, obtained using the integrated surface brightness method, from recent surface photometry of the host. These results should encourage us to use the colour separation method also in other host galaxies with strongly variable AGN. In the case of OJ 287, both the host galaxy and its central black hole are among the biggest known, and its position in the black hole mass–galaxy mass diagram lies close to the mean correlation. © 2022 The Author(s). We are carrying out the densest and longest multiyear, multiwavelength monitoring project of OJ 287 ever done. The project MOMO (Multiwavelength Observations and Modelling of OJ 287) covers wavelengths from the radio to the high-energy regime. A few selected observations are simultaneous with those of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). MOMO aims at understanding disk-jet physics and at testing predictions of the binary black hole scenario of OJ 287. Here, we present a discussion of extreme outburst and minima states in context, and then focus on the recent flux and spectral evolution between 2021 and May 2022, including an ongoing bright radio flare. Further, we show that there is no evidence for precursor flare activity in our optical-UV-X-ray light curves that would be associated with any secondary supermassive black hole (SMBH) disk impact and that was predicted to start as thermal flare on 2021 December 23., Submitted to AN. We are carrying out a dense monitoring of the blazar OJ 287 with Swift since late 2015 as part of our project MOMO (Multiwavelength Observations and Modeling of OJ 287). This is the densest existing monitoring of OJ 287 involving X-ray and UV data. In this latest publication of a sequence, we characterize the multiwavelength variability of OJ 287 based on >4000 Swift single-wave-band data sets including archival data since 2005. A structure function analysis reveals a characteristic timescale of ~5 days in the optical-UV at epochs of low-level activity, and larger during outbursts. The discrete correlation function shows zero lag between optical and UV, with tau = 0+-1 days at the epoch of densest cadence. During outbursts (in 2016/17 and 2020) the X-rays follow the UV with near-zero lags. However, during quiescence, the delay is 7-18 days with X-rays leading or lagging, interpreted as due to a different X-ray component dominated by inverse Compton emission. Scaling relations are used to derive the characteristic length scales of broad-line region and torus in OJ 287. A remarkable, symmetric UV--optical deep fade is identified in late 2017, lasting for 2 months. We rule out occultation from the passage of a dusty cloud and a model where the secondary black hole deflects the jet between the primary and observer. We speculate about a temporary dispersion or jet swing event in the core or in a bright quasi-stationary jet feature. The deep fade reveals an additional, spatially distinct X-ray component. We present the discovery that ASASSN-14ko is a periodically flaring AGN at the center of the galaxy ESO 253-G003. At the time of its discovery by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN), it was classified as a supernova close to the nucleus. The subsequent six years of V- and g-band ASAS-SN observations reveal that ASASSN-14ko has nuclear flares occurring at regular intervals. The seventeen observed outbursts show evidence of a decreasing period over time, with a mean period of $P_0 = 114.2 \pm 0.4$ days and a period derivative of $\dot{P} = -0.0017\pm0.0003$. The most recent outburst in May 2020, which took place as predicted, exhibited spectroscopic changes during the rise and a had a UV bright, blackbody spectral energy distribution similar to tidal disruption events (TDEs). The X-ray flux decreased by a factor of 4 at the beginning of the outburst and then returned to its quiescent flux after ~8 days. TESS observed an outburst during Sectors 4-6, revealing a rise time of $5.60 \pm 0.05$ days in the optical and a decline that is best fit with an exponential model. We discuss several possible scenarios to explain ASASSN-14ko's periodic outbursts, but currently favor a repeated partial TDE. We present the Swift optical to X-ray spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 44 quasars at redshifts z~2 observed by Swift, part of a larger program to establish and characterize the optical through X-ray SEDs of moderate-redshift quasars. Here we outline our analysis approach and present preliminary analysis and results for the first third of the full quasar sample. Not all quasars in the sample are detected in X-rays; all of the X-ray detected objects so far are radio loud. As expected for radio loud objects, they are X-ray bright relative to radio-quiet quasars of comparable optical luminosities, with an average alpha_ox = 1.39 +/- 0.03 (where alpha_ox is the power-law slope connecting the monochromatic flux at 2500 Ang and at 2 keV), and display hard X-ray spectra. We find integrated 3000 Ang - 25 keV accretion luminosities of between 0.7*10^(46) erg s^(-1) and 5.2*10^(47) erg s^(-1). Based on single-epoch spectroscopic virial black hole mass estimates, we find that these quasars are accreting at substantial Eddington fractions, 0.1 \le L/LEdd \le 1., Comment: 45 pages (of which, 18 pages main text). We present the results of an optical spectroscopic monitoring program targeting NGC 5548 as part of a larger multi-wavelength reverberation mapping campaign. The campaign spanned six months and achieved an almost daily cadence with observations from five ground-based telescopes. The H$\beta$ and He II $\lambda$4686 broad emission-line light curves lag that of the 5100 $\AA$ optical continuum by $4.17^{+0.36}_{-0.36}$ days and $0.79^{+0.35}_{-0.34}$ days, respectively. The H$\beta$ lag relative to the 1158 $\AA$ ultraviolet continuum light curve measured by the Hubble Space Telescope is roughly $\sim$50% longer than that measured against the optical continuum, and the lag difference is consistent with the observed lag between the optical and ultraviolet continua. This suggests that the characteristic radius of the broad-line region is $\sim$50% larger than the value inferred from optical data alone. We also measured velocity-resolved emission-line lags for H$\beta$ and found a complex velocity-lag structure with shorter lags in the line wings, indicative of a broad-line region dominated by Keplerian motion. The responses of both the H$\beta$ and He II $\lambda$4686 emission lines to the driving continuum changed significantly halfway through the campaign, a phenomenon also observed for C IV, Ly $\alpha$, He II(+O III]), and Si IV(+O IV]) during the same monitoring period. Finally, given the optical luminosity of NGC 5548 during our campaign, the measured H$\beta$ lag is a factor of five shorter than the expected value implied by the $R_\mathrm{BLR} - L_\mathrm{AGN}$ relation based on the past behavior of NGC 5548., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures, accepted to ApJ

We present ground-based optical photometric monitoring data for NGC 5548, part of an extended multi-wavelength reverberation mapping campaign. The light curves have nearly daily cadence from 2014 January to July in nine filters (\emph{BVRI} and \emph{ugriz}). Combined with ultraviolet data from the \emph{Hubble Space Telescope} and \emph{Swift}, we confirm significant time delays between the continuum bands as a function of wavelength, extending the wavelength coverage from 1158\,\AA\ to the $z$ band ($\sim\!9160$\,\AA). We find that the lags at wavelengths longer than the {\it V} band are equal to or greater than the lags of high-ionization-state emission lines (such as He\,{\sc ii}\,$\lambda 1640$ and $\lambda 4686$), suggesting that the continuum-emitting source is of a physical size comparable to the inner broad-line region (BLR). The trend of lag with wavelength is broadly consistent with the prediction for continuum reprocessing by an accretion disk with $\tau \propto \lambda^{4/3}$. However, the lags also imply a disk radius that is 3 times larger than the prediction from standard thin-disk theory, assuming that the bolometric luminosity is 10\% of the Eddington luminosity ($L = 0.1L_{\rm Edd}$). Using optical spectra from the Large Binocular Telescope, we estimate the bias of the interband continuum lags due to BLR emission observed in the filters. We find that the bias for filters with high levels of BLR contamination ($\sim\! 20\%$) can be important for the shortest continuum lags, and likely has a significant impact on the {\it u} and {\it U} bands owing to Balmer continuum emission., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures, accepted to ApJ. We report the discovery of ASASSN-15lh (SN 2015L), which we interpret as the most luminous supernova yet found. At redshift z = 0.2326, ASASSN-15lh reached an absolute magnitude of Mu ,AB = -23.5 ± 0.1 and bolometric luminosity Lbol = (2.2 ± 0.2) × 10(45) ergs s(-1), which is more than twice as luminous as any previously known supernova. It has several major features characteristic of the hydrogen-poor super-luminous supernovae (SLSNe-I), whose energy sources and progenitors are currently poorly understood. In contrast to most previously known SLSNe-I that reside in star-forming dwarf galaxies, ASASSN-15lh appears to be hosted by a luminous galaxy (MK ≈ -25.5) with little star formation. In the 4 months since first detection, ASASSN-15lh radiated (1.1 ± 0.2) × 10(52) ergs, challenging the magnetar model for its engine.

We conduct a multiwavelength continuum variability study of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 to investigate the temperature structure of its accretion disk. The 19 overlapping continuum light curves (1158 to 9157 angstroms) combine simultaneous HST , Swift , and ground-based observations over a 180 day period from 2014 January to July. Light-curve variability is interpreted as the reverberation response of the accretion disk to irradiation by a central time-varying point source. Our model yields the disk inclination, i, temperature T1 at 1 light day from the black hole, and a temperature-radius slope, alpha. We also infer the driving light curve and find that it correlates poorly with both the hard and soft X-ray light curves, suggesting that the X-rays alone may not drive the ultraviolet and optical variability over the observing period. We also decompose the light curves into bright, faint, and mean accretion-disk spectra. We present XMM-Newton observations of the AGN SDSS 1430-0011. The low S/N spectrum of this source obtained in a snap shot Chandra observation showed an unusually flat continuum. With the follow up XMM-Newtonobservations we find that the source spectrum is complex; it either has an ionized absorber or a partially covering absorber. The underlying power-law is in the normal range observed for AGNs. The low luminosity of the source during Chandra observations can be understood in terms of variations in the absorber properties. The X-ray and optical properties of this source are such that it cannot be securely classified as either a narr ow line Seyfert 1 or a broad line Seyfert 1 galaxy.

Recent intensive Swift monitoring of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 yielded 282 usable epochs over 125 days across six UV/optical bands and the X-rays. We describe the first results from a six-month long reverberation-mapping experiment in the ultraviolet based on 170 observations of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. Significant correlated variability is found in the continuum and broad emission lines, with amplitudes ranging from ~30% to a factor of two in the emission lines and a factor of three in the continuum. The variations of all the strong emission lines lag behind those of the continuum, with He II 1640 lagging behind the continuum by ~2.5 days and Lyman alpha 1215, C IV 1550, and Si IV 1400 lagging by ~5-6 days. The relationship between the continuum and emission lines is complex. In particular, during the second half of the campaign, all emission-line lags increased by a factor of 1.3-2 and differences appear in the detailed structure of the continuum and emission-line light curves. Velocity-resolved cross-correlation analysis shows coherent structure in lag versus line-of-sight velocity for the emission lines; the high-velocity wings of C IV respond to continuum variations more rapidly than the line core, probably indicating higher velocity BLR clouds at smaller distances from the central engine. The bright gamma-ray burst GRB050525a has been detected with the Swift observatory, providing unique multiwavelength coverage from the very earliest phases of the burst. The X-ray and optical/UV afterglow decay light curves both exhibit a steeper slope ~0.15 days after the burst, indicative of a jet break. This jet break time combined with the total gamma-ray energy of the burst constrains the opening angle of the jet to be 3.2 degrees. We derive an empirical `time-lag' redshift from the BAT data of z_hat = 0.69 +/- 0.02, in good agreement with the spectroscopic redshift of 0.61. Prior to the jet break, the X-ray data can be modelled by a simple power law with index alpha = -1.2. However after 300 s the X-ray flux brightens by about 30% compared to the power-law fit. The optical/UV data have a more complex decay, with evidence of a rapidly falling reverse shock component that dominates in the first minute or so, giving way to a flatter forward shock component at later times. The multiwavelength X-ray/UV/Optical spectrum of the afterglow shows evidence for migration of the electron cooling frequency through the optical range within 25000 s. The measured temporal decay and spectral indices in the X-ray and optical/UV regimes compare favourably with the standard fireball model for Gamma-ray bursts assuming expansion into a constant density interstellar medium., Comment: 31 pages, 7 figures, referee comments implemented, typo corrected in author list, accepted by ApJ

We discuss ASASSN-13db, an EX Lupi-type ("EXor") accretion event on the young stellar object (YSO) SDSS J051011.01$-$032826.2 (hereafter SDSSJ0510) discovered by the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN). Using archival photometric data of SDSSJ0510 we construct a pre-outburst spectral energy distribution (SED) and find that it is consistent with a low-mass class II YSO near the Orion star forming region ($d \sim 420$ pc). We present follow-up photometric and spectroscopic observations of the source after the $\Delta V \sim-$5.4 magnitude outburst that began in September 2013 and ended in early 2014. These data indicate an increase in temperature and luminosity consistent with an accretion rate of $\sim10^{-7}$ $\rm{M}_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, three or more orders of magnitude greater than in quiescence. Spectroscopic observations show a forest of narrow emission lines dominated by neutral metallic lines from Fe I and some low-ionization lines. The properties of ASASSN-13db are similar to those of the EXor prototype EX Lupi during its strongest observed outburst in late 2008., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. We present the observations of GRB090510 performed by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope and the Swift observatory. This is a bright, short burst that shows an extended emission detected in the GeV range. Furthermore, its optical emission initially rises, a feature so far observed only in long bursts, while the X-ray flux shows an initial shallow decrease, followed by a steeper decay. This exceptional behavior enables us to investigate the physical properties of the GRB outflow, poorly known in short bursts. Swift‐XRT observations of the X‐ray emission from gamma ray bursts (GRBs) and during the GRB afterglow have led to many new results during the past two years. One of these exciting results is that ∼1/3−1/2 of GRBs contain detectable X‐ray flares. The mean fluence of the X‐ray flares is ∼10× less than that of the initial prompt emission, but in some cases the flare is as energetic as the prompt emission itself. The flares display fast rises and decays, and they sometimes occur at very late times relative to the prompt emission (sometimes as late as 105 s after T0) with very high peak fluxes relative to the underlying afterglow decay that has clearly begun prior to some flares. The temporal and spectral properties of the flares are found to favor models in which flares arise due to the same GRB internal engine processes that spawned the prompt GRB emission. Therefore, both long and short GRB internal engine models must be capable of producing high fluences in the X‐ray band at very late times.

The prompt emission of gamma‐ray bursts (GRBs) is generally thought to be produced by internal shocks within the relativistic outflow, while the longer‐wavelength afterglow is produced by external shocks resulting from the interaction between the outflow and external medium. This picture has gained support from the clear separation between the prompt and afterglow phases seen in most Swift GRBs. However, no separation is seen in GRB 070318. The prompt X‐ray emission extrapolated from the observed Swift BAT flux matches well the early X‐ray afterglow emission in both temporal and spectral properties, and the combined 0.3–10 keV light curve can be fit with a single power‐law with an index typical of late‐time afterglows. The UV‐optical light curve displays a similar power‐law decay after the broad maximum. In addition, the gamma‐ray emission displays a single, FRED(fast rise, exponential decay)‐like peak and unusually smooth light curve, consistent with a single impulsive event interacting with the external medium.

We present the first systematic investigation of the morphological and timing properties of flares in GRBs observed by Swift/XRT. We consider a large sample drawn from all GRBs detected by Swift, INTEGRAL and HETE-2 prior to 2006 Jan 31, which had an XRT follow-up and which showed significant flaring. Our sample of 33 GRBs includes long and short, at low and high redshift, and a total of 69 flares. The strongest flares occur in the early phases, with a clear anti-correlation between the flare peak intensity and the flare time of occurrence. Fitting each X-ray flare with a Gaussian model, we find that the mean ratio of the width and peak time is = 0.13+/-0.10, albeit with a large scatter. Late flares at times > 2000 seconds have long durations, Delta t>300 s, and can be very energetic compared to the underlying continuum. We further investigated if there is a clear link between the number of pulses detected in the prompt phase by BAT and the number of X-ray flares detected by XRT, finding no correlation. However, we find that the distribution of intensity ratios between successive BAT prompt pulses and that between successive XRT flares is the same, an indication of a common origin for gamma-ray pulses and X-ray flares. All evidence indicates that flares are indeed related to the workings of the central engine and, within the standard fireball scenario, originate from internal shocks rather than external shocks. While all flares can be explained by long-lasting engine activity, 29/69 flares may also be explained by refreshed shocks. We discuss the properties of the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy LB 1727, also known as 1H 0419-577, from X-ray observations obtained by ASCA and ROSAT along with optical observations from earlier epochs. ASCA shows only modest (< 20%) variations in X-ray flux within or between the observations. In contrast, a daily monitoring campaign over 1996 Jun - Sept by the ROSAT HRI instrument reveals the soft X-ray (0.1-2 keV) flux to have increased by a factor ~3. The 2 - 10 keV continuum can be parameterized as a power-law with a photon index Gamma ~ 1.45-1.68 across ~0.7 - 11 keV in the rest-frame. We also report the first detection of iron Kalpha line emission in this source. Simultaneous ASCA and ROSAT data show the X-ray spectrum to steepen sharply at a rest-energy \~0.75 keV, the spectrum below this energy can be parameterized as a power-law of slope Gamma ~3.6. We show that LB 1727 is one of the few Seyferts for which we can rule out the possibility that the presence of a warm absorber is solely responsible for the spectral steepening in the soft X-ray regime. Consideration of the overall spectral-energy-distribution for this source indicates the presence of a pronounced XUV-bump visible in optical, ultraviolet and soft X-ray data., 27 pages, 7 figures. Optical identification of bright sources from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey has led to the discovery of 40 new Seyfert galaxies with very soft X-ray spectra. Nearly half of these are narrow-line Seyfert 1 (Hβ-FWHM < 2000 km/s) with strong optical FeII emission, suggesting the presence of an unseen hard X-ray component. The remainder are Sy1.5 and a few broad-line Sy1.
