Previous research assessing consequences of interpregnancy intervals (IPIs) on child development is mixed. Utilizing a population-based US sample (n = 5339), we first estimate the associations between background characteristics (e.g. sociodemographic and maternal characteristics) and short ([less than or equal to]1 year) and long (>3 years) IPI. Then, we estimate associations between IPI and birth outcomes, infant temperament, cognitive ability, and externalizing symptoms. Several background characteristics, such as maternal age at childbearing and previous pregnancy loss, were associated with IPI, indicating research on the putative effects of IPI must account for background characteristics. After covariate adjustment, short IPI was associated with poorer foetal growth and long IPI was associated with lower infant activity level; however, associations between short and long IPI and the other outcomes were neither large nor statistically significant. These findings indicate that rather than intervening to modify IPI, at-risk families may benefit from interventions aimed at other modifiable risk factors.

Objective: Most mental disorders, when examined individually, are associated with an increased risk of cardiometabolic complications. However, these associations might be attributed to a general liability to psychopathology or confounded by unmeasured familial factors. The authors investigated the association between psychiatric conditions in young adulthood and the risk of cardiometabolic complications in middle adulthood, up to 40 years later. Methods: This cohort study (N=672,823) identified all individuals and their siblings born in Sweden between 1955 and 1962 and followed the cohort through 2013. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the bivariate associations between 10 psychiatric conditions or criminal convictions and five cardiometabolic complications in individuals. A general factor model was used to identify general, internalizing, externalizing, and psychotic factors based on the comorbidity among psychiatric conditions and criminal convictions. The cardiometabolic complications were then regressed on the latent general factor and three uncorrelated specific factors within a structural equation modeling framework in individuals and across sibling pairs. Results: Each psychiatric condition significantly increased the risk of cardiometabolic complications. These associations appeared nonspecific, as multivariate models indicated that most were attributable to the general factor of psychopathology, rather than to specific psychiatric conditions. There were no or only small associations between individuals' general psychopathology and their siblings' cardiometabolic complications. The same pattern was evident for the specific internalizing and psychotic factors. Conclusions: Associations between mental disorders in early life and later long-term risk of cardiometabolic complications appeared to be attributable to a general liability to psychopathology. Familial coaggregation analyses suggested that the elevated risk could not be attributed to confounders shared within families. Visual disengagement has been hypothesized as an endophenotype for autism. In this study we used twin modelling to assess the role of genetics in basic measures of visual disengagement, and tested their putative association to autistic traits in the general population. We used the Gap Overlap task in a sample of 492 twins. Results showed that most of the covariance among eye movement latencies across conditions was shared and primarily genetic. Further, there were unique genetic contributions to the Gap condition, but not to the Overlap condition--i.e. the one theorized to capture visual disengagement. We found no phenotypic association between autistic traits and disengagement, thus not supporting the hypothesis of visual disengagement as an endophenotype for autistic traits.

Background [beta]-blockers are widely used for treating cardiac conditions and are suggested for the treatment of anxiety and aggression, although research is conflicting and limited by methodological problems. In addition, [beta]-blockers have been associated with precipitating other psychiatric disorders and suicidal behaviour, but findings are mixed. We aimed to examine associations between [beta]-blockers and psychiatric and behavioural outcomes in a large population-based cohort in Sweden. Methods and findings We conducted a population-based longitudinal cohort study using Swedish nationwide high-quality healthcare, mortality, and crime registers. We included 1,400,766 individuals aged 15 years or older who had collected [beta]-blocker prescriptions and followed them for 8 years between 2006 and 2013. We linked register data on dispensed [beta]-blocker prescriptions with main outcomes, hospitalisations for psychiatric disorders (not including self-injurious behaviour or suicide attempts), suicidal behaviour (including deaths from suicide), and charges of violent crime. We applied within-individual Cox proportional hazards regression to compare periods on treatment with periods off treatment within each individual in order to reduce possible confounding by indication, as this model inherently adjusts for all stable confounders (e.g., genetics and health history). We also adjusted for age as a time-varying covariate. In further analyses, we adjusted by stated indications, prevalent users, cardiac severity, psychiatric and crime history, individual [beta]-blockers, [beta]-blocker selectivity and solubility, and use of other medications. In the cohort, 86.8% (n = 1,215,247) were 50 years and over, and 52.2% (n = 731,322) were women. During the study period, 6.9% (n = 96,801) of the [beta]-blocker users were hospitalised for a psychiatric disorder, 0.7% (n = 9,960) presented with suicidal behaviour, and 0.7% (n = 9,405) were charged with a violent crime. There was heterogeneity in the direction of results; within-individual analyses showed that periods of [beta]-blocker treatment were associated with reduced hazards of psychiatric hospitalisations (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.92, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.91 to 0.93, p < 0.001), charges of violent crime (HR: 0.87, 95% CI: 0.81 to 0.93, p < 0.001), and increased hazards of suicidal behaviour (HR: 1.08, 95% CI: 1.02 to 1.15, p = 0.012). After stratifying by diagnosis, reduced associations with psychiatric hospitalisations during [beta]-blocker treatment were mainly driven by lower hospitalisation rates due to depressive (HR: 0.92, 95% CI: 0.89 to 0.96, p < 0.001) and psychotic disorders (HR: 0.89, 95% CI: 0.85 to 0.93, p < 0.001). Reduced associations with violent charges remained in most sensitivity analyses, while associations with psychiatric hospitalisations and suicidal behaviour were inconsistent. Limitations include that the within-individual model does not account for confounders that could change during treatment, unless measured and adjusted for in the model. Conclusions In this population-wide study, we found no consistent links between [beta]-blockers and psychiatric outcomes. However, [beta]-blockers were associated with reductions in violence, which remained in sensitivity analyses.
