Background: Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is an effective treatment for adolescents with severe obesity. Objectives: This study examined the safety of MBS in adolescents during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: This was a global, multicentre and observational cohort study of MBS performed between May 01, 2020, and October 10,2020, in 68 centres from 24 countries. Data collection included in-hospital and 30-day COVID-19 and surgery-specific morbidity/mortality. Results: One hundred and seventy adolescent patients (mean age: 17.75 ± 1.30 years), mostly females (n=122, 71.8%), underwent MBS during the study period. The mean pre-operative weight and body mass index were 122.16 ± 15.92 kg and 43.7± 7.11 kg/m2, respectively. Although majority of patients had pre-operative testing for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (n=146; 85.9%), only 42.4% (n=72) of the patients were asked to self-isolate pre-operatively. Two patients developed symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection post-operatively (1.2%). The overall complication rate was 5.3% (n=9). There was no mortality in this cohort. Conclusions: MBS in adolescents with obesity is safe during the COVID-19 pandemic when performed within the context of local precautionary procedures (such as pre-operative testing). The 30-day morbidity rates were similar to those reported pre-pandemic. These data will help facilitate the safe re-introduction of MBS services for this group of patients.

The evolution of the ‘true’ worker caste in termites is not decisively inferred by coding and mapping both this character and the foraging behaviour on a phylogenetic tree. Answering to Thompson et al. (2000, 2003), and with reference to Grandcolas and D'Haese (2002), we show that this indecisive inference depends on the correct consideration paid to the outgroups. These last ones could be non subsocial cockroaches, or some wood-eating subsocial cockroaches often considered misleadingly as living ancestors, or even any hemimetabolous insects, all of them would be unambiguously lacking ‘true’ worker caste and pseudergate caste and not showing the ‘one-piece’ life type foraging behaviour. These statements derive from observing, coding and mapping the real world on the tree without making ad hoc assumptions. In that respect, because termites do not exist in isolation, apart from the tree of life, mapping the character of interest on the tree must be applied to the outgroups as well. - Abstract
The materials of three Acerentomidae species from Australia and Tasmania were studied. Additional morphological characters, such as chaetotaxy of head and notal segments, shape of body setae and porotaxy, are provided based on new materials of Australentulus westraliensis from Australia and Tasmanentulus tasmanicus from Tasmania. A new species, Amphientulus markstivensi, is described from Tasmania. The steps of reduction of morphological characters along the presumed phylogenetic line Acerentulus - Australentulus - Tasmanentulus - Amphientulus are discussed. The apical tuft of setae on the labial palps is reduced in Australentulus, Tasmanentulus and Amphientulus. In Tasmanentulus and Amphientulus there is also a reduction of setal number to two setae on abdominal legs. Phylogenetic relationships within Australian Acerentomidae genera are discussed. An identification key to Australian Acerentomidae species is provided.

30. Elimination of charge-carrier trapping by molecular design.

- Abstract
A common obstacle of many organic semiconductors is that they show highly unipolar charge transport. This unipolarity is caused by trapping of either electrons or holes by extrinsic impurities, such as water or oxygen. For devices that benefit from balanced transport, such as organic light-emitting diodes, organic solar cells and organic ambipolar transistors, the energy levels of the organic semiconductors are ideally situated within an energetic window with a width of 2.5 eV where charge trapping is strongly suppressed. However, for semiconductors with a band gap larger than this window, as used in blue-emitting organic light-emitting diodes, the removal or disabling of charge traps poses a longstanding challenge. Here we demonstrate a molecular strategy where the highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital are spatially separated on different parts of the molecules. By tuning their stacking by modification of the chemical structure, the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals can be spatially protected from impurities that cause electron trapping, increasing the electron current by orders of magnitude. In this way, the trap-free window can be substantially broadened, opening a path towards large band gap organic semiconductors with balanced and trap-free transport., (© 2023. The Author(s).)

- Abstract
Diverse drugs have been used for the management of inflammation disorders and pain. However, they present many side effects and stimulate the search for new pharmacotherapeutic alternatives. Plant-derived products such as copaiba essential oil (CO) offer beneficial pharmacological effects. On the other hand, essential oil's low water solubility and physical instability hinder its in vivo application. Thus, poly-ɛ-caprolactone (PCL)-based nanocarriers have been used to increase their stability and efficacy. This work aimed to encapsulate CO in PCL nanocapsules and evaluate their effect on inflammation models and pain. The polymeric nanocapsules loading CO (CO-NC) were prepared by nanoprecipitation technique, characterized, and analyzed for their anti-inflammatory effect in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that CO-NC presented a spherical shape, 229.3 ± 1.5 nm diameter, and a negative zeta potential (approximately -23 mV). CO and CO-NC presented anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects by LPS-activated macrophages (J774 cells). In addition, CO-NC significantly reduced TNF-α secretion (3-fold) compared to CO. In vivo, pre-treatment with CO or CO-NC (50, 100, 200 mg/kg, intraperitoneal; i.p) reduced the mechanical allodynia, paw edema, and pro-inflammatory cytokines induced by intraplantar (i.pl) injection of carrageenan in mice. Specifically, CO-NC (200 mg/kg; i.p.) reduced the production of TNF-α similar to the control group. 32. Modification of Two-Dimensional Tin-Based Perovskites by Pentanoic Acid for Improved Performance of Field-Effect Transistors.

- Abstract
Understanding and controlling the nucleation and crystallization in solution-processed perovskite thin films are critical to achieving high in-plane charge carrier transport in field-effect transistors (FETs). This work demonstrates a simple and effective additive engineering strategy using pentanoic acid (PA). Here, PA is introduced to both modulate the crystallization process and improve the charge carrier transport in 2D 2-thiopheneethylammonium tin iodide ((TEA)
2 SnI4 ) perovskite FETs. It is revealed that the carboxylic group of PA is strongly coordinated to the spacer cation TEAI and [SnI6 ]4- framework in the perovskite precursor solution, inducing heterogeneous nucleation and lowering undesired oxidation of Sn2+ during the film formation. These factors contribute to a reduced defect density and improved film morphology, including lower surface roughness and larger grain size, resulting in overall enhanced transistor performance. The reduced defect density and decreased ion migration lead to a higher p-channel charge carrier mobility of 0.7 cm2 V-1 s-1 , which is more than a threefold increase compared with the control device. Temperature-dependent charge transport studies demonstrate a mobility of 2.3 cm2 V-1 s-1 at 100 K due to the diminished ion mobility at low temperatures. - Abstract
Studies of ion-specific effects on oligopeptides have aided our understanding of Hofmeister effects on proteins, yet the use of different model peptides and different experimental sensitivities have led to conflicting conclusions. To resolve these controversies, we study a small model peptide, L-Alanyl-L-alanine (2Ala), carrying all fundamental chemical protein motifs: C-terminus, amide bond, and N-terminus. We elucidate the effect of GdmCl, LiCl, KCl, KI, and KSCN by combining dielectric relaxation, nuclear magnetic resonance (
1 H-NMR), and (two-dimensional) infrared spectroscopy. Our dielectric results show that all ions reduce the rotational mobility of 2Ala, yet the magnitude of the reduction is larger for denaturing cations than for anions. The NMR chemical shifts of the amide group are particularly sensitive to denaturing anions, indicative of anion-amide interactions. Infrared experiments reveal that LiCl alters the spectral homogeneity and dynamics of the carboxylate, but not the amide group. Interaction of LiCl with the negatively charged pole of 2Ala, the COO- group, can explain the marked cationic effect on dipolar rotation, while interaction of anions between the poles, at the amide, only weakly perturbs dipolar dynamics. As such, our results provide a unifying view on ions' preferential interaction sites at 2Ala and help rationalize Hofmeister effects on proteins., (© 2022. The Author(s).)- Published

34. Lecithin-based nanocapsule loading sucupira ( Pterodon emarginatus ) oil effects in experimental mucositis.

- Abstract
Intestinal mucositis (IM) is a frequent adverse effect in anticancer therapy without standard treatment. The oil obtained from sucupira (Pterodon emarginatus) has anti-inflammatory properties, and the soybean lecithin reduces the intestinal toxicity of several xenobiotics. However, their water insolubility impairs the in vivo application. For this reason, we evaluated if the nanoencapsulation of sucupira oil (SO) in lecithin-based nanocapsules (SO-NC) could be a therapeutically effective system for the treatment of IM in murine cisplatin (CDDP)-induced intestinal mucositis model. SO was analyzed by LC-HRMS/MS and HPLC. SO-NC was prepared by nanoprecipitation and characterized using DLS, HPLC, and AFM. Mice body weight and food consumption were assessed daily during experimental mucositis induced by CDDP. The animals were euthanized, and intestinal permeability, inflammatory mediators, and intestinal histology were performed. SO-NC demonstrated adequate characteristics for oral administration as size under 300 nm, IP < 0.3, high EE, and spherical shape. In vitro cytotoxicity performed against RAW 264.7 cell lines resulted in cell viability above 80 % confirming the non-cytotoxic profile of SO (IC
50 268 µg/mL) and SO-NC (IC50 118.5 µg/mL) up to 117.2 µg/mL. The untreated mice showed intestinal toxicity after i.p. of CDDP, principally weight loss, increased intestinal permeability, and MPO and TNF-α levels. Surprisingly, the administration of SO to CDDP-mucositis animals did not circumvent the CDDP effects and increased intestinal permeability. However, SO-NC proved efficient in mitigating the experimental intestinal mucositis by improving intestinal epithelium architecture, reducing intestinal permeability, and improving the MPO levels. In conclusion, SO-NC can positively impact intestinal mucositis by promoting mucosal recovery. - Abstract
Background: There are data on the safety of cancer surgery and the efficacy of preventive strategies on the prevention of postoperative symptomatic COVID-19 in these patients. But there is little such data for any elective surgery. The main objectives of this study were to examine the safety of bariatric surgery (BS) during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and to determine the efficacy of perioperative COVID-19 protective strategies on postoperative symptomatic COVID-19 rates., Methods: We conducted an international cohort study to determine all-cause and COVID-19-specific 30-day morbidity and mortality of BS performed between 01/05/2020 and 31/10/2020., Results: Four hundred ninety-nine surgeons from 185 centres in 42 countries provided data on 7704 patients. Elective primary BS (n = 7084) was associated with a 30-day morbidity of 6.76% (n = 479) and a 30-day mortality of 0.14% (n = 10). Emergency BS, revisional BS, insulin-treated type 2 diabetes, and untreated obstructive sleep apnoea were associated with increased complications on multivariable analysis. Forty-three patients developed symptomatic COVID-19 postoperatively, with a higher risk in non-whites. Preoperative self-isolation, preoperative testing for SARS-CoV-2, and surgery in institutions not concurrently treating COVID-19 patients did not reduce the incidence of postoperative COVID-19. Postoperative symptomatic COVID-19 was more likely if the surgery was performed during a COVID-19 peak in that country., Conclusions: BS can be performed safely during the COVID-19 pandemic with appropriate perioperative protocols. There was no relationship between preoperative testing for COVID-19 and self-isolation with symptomatic postoperative COVID-19. Background: Dispersal is essential for terrestrial organisms living in disjunct habitats and constitutes a significant challenge for the evolution of wingless taxa. Springtails (Collembola), the sister-group of all insects (with Diplura), are reported since the Lower Devonian and are thought to have originally been subterranean. The order Symphypleona is reported since the early Cretaceous with genera distributed on every continent. This distribution implies an ability to disperse over oceans, however symphypleonan Collembola have never been reported in marine water contrary to other springtail orders. Despite being highly widespread, modern springtails are rarely reported in any kind of biotic association. Interestingly, the fossil record has provided occasional occurrences of Symphypleona attached by the antennae onto the bodies of larger arthropods., Results: Here, we document the case of a ~ 16 Ma old fossil association: a winged termite and ant displaying not some, but 25 springtails attached or in close proximity to the body. The collembola exhibit rare features for fossils, reflecting their courtship and phoretic behaviours. By observing the modes of attachment of springtails on different arthropods, the sex representation and ratios in springtail antennal anatomies in new and previously reported cases, we infer a likely mechanism for dispersal in Symphypleona. By revealing hidden evidence of modern springtail associations with other invertebrates such as ants and termites, new compelling assemblages of fossil springtails, and the drastic increase of eusocial insects' abundance during the Cenozoic (ants/termites comprising more than a third of insects in Miocene amber), we stress that attachment on winged castes of ants and termites may have been a mechanism for the worldwide dispersal of this significant springtail lineage. Moreover, by comparing the general constraints applying to the other wingless soil-dwelling arthropods known to disperse through phoresy, we suggest biases in the collection and observation of phoretic Symphypleona related to their reflexive detachment and infer that this behaviour continues today., Conclusions: The specific case of tree resin entrapment represents the (so far) only condition uncovering the phoretic dispersal mechanism of springtails - one of the oldest terrestrial arthropod lineages living today.

Solid acid catalysts are central in our chemical industry and are major players in the valorization of bioresources. However, there is still a need to develop solid acid catalysts with enhanced acid strength and improved, or tunable, physicochemical profile to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of chemical processes. Here, a modular approach to tune the acid strength and surface polarity of silica-supported sulfonic acid catalysts, based on a versatile copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC)-based anchoring scheme, is presented. The CuAAC-formed triazole link was used to enhance the activity of the grafted sulfonic acids and to pair the acid sites with secondary hydrophobic functions. The beneficial effects of both the triazolium link and the paired hydrophobic site, as well as the optimal positioning of the sulfonic moiety on the triazole ring, are discussed in model esterification reactions., (© 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. 38. Breakdown of coevolution between symbiotic bacteria Wolbachia and their filarial hosts.

- Abstract
Wolbachia is an alpha-proteobacterial symbiont widely distributed in arthropods. Since the identification of Wolbachia in certain animal-parasitic nematodes (the Onchocercidae or filariae), the relationship between arthropod and nematode Wolbachia has attracted great interest. The obligate symbiosis in filariae, which renders infected species susceptible to antibiotic chemotherapy, was held to be distinct from the Wolbachia-arthropod relationship, typified by reproductive parasitism. While co-evolutionary signatures in Wolbachia-arthropod symbioses are generally weak, reflecting horizontal transmission events, strict co-evolution between filariae and Wolbachia has been reported previously. However, the absence of close outgroups for phylogenetic studies prevented the determination of which host group originally acquired Wolbachia. Here, we present the largest co-phylogenetic analysis of Wolbachia in filariae performed to date including: (i) a screening and an updated phylogeny of Wolbachia; (ii) a co-phylogenetic analysis; and (iii) a hypothesis on the acquisition of Wolbachia infection. First, our results show a general overestimation of Wolbachia occurrence and support the hypothesis of an ancestral absence of infection in the nematode phylum. The accuracy of supergroup J is also underlined. Second, although a global pattern of coevolution remains, the signal is derived predominantly from filarial clades associated with Wolbachia in supergroups C and J. In other filarial clades, harbouring Wolbachia supergroups D and F, horizontal acquisitions and secondary losses are common. Finally, our results suggest that supergroup C is the basal Wolbachia clade within the Ecdysozoa. This hypothesis on the origin of Wolbachia would change drastically our understanding of Wolbachia evolution.

39. Thicker is better? Synthesis and evaluation of well-defined polymer brushes with controllable catalytic loadings.

- Abstract
Polymer brushes (PBs) have been used as supports for the immobilization of palladium complexes on silicon surfaces. The polymers were grown by surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) and postdecorated with dipyridylamine (dpa) ligands. The pendant dpa units were in turn complexed with [Pd(OAc)(2)] to afford hybrid catalytic surfaces. A series of catalytic samples of various thicknesses (ca. 20-160 nm) and associated palladium loadings (ca. 10-45 nmol cm(-2)) were obtained by adjusting the SI-ATRP reaction time and characterized by ellipsometry, X-ray reflectivity, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). ICP-MS revealed a near-linear relationship between thickness of the polymer brush and palladium content, which confirmed the robustness of the preparation and postmodification sequence presented herein, rendering possible the creation of functional architectures with predefined catalytic potential. The activities of the catalytic PBs were determined by systematically exploring a full range of substrate-to-catalyst ratios in a model palladium(0)-catalyzed reaction. Quantitative transformations were observed for loadings down to 0.03 mol % and a maximum turnover number (TON) of around 3500 was established for the system. Comparison of the catalytic performances evidenced a singular influence of the thickness on conversions and TONs. Monolayers of terpyridine-derivatized silanes were self-assembled, with accurately controlled grafting densities, on single-crystal silicon surfaces. Complexation of the resulting terpyridine monolayers with Pd(OAc)(2) afforded a series of catalytic surfaces covering a full range of Pd loadings (0.14-0.85 nmol.cm(-2)) in the aim to explore their impact on catalysis methodically. X-ray reflectivity (XRR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were combined to afford a precise picture of the grafting density, chemical composition, and catalyst loadings of the surfaces investigated here. We report that the control of the terpyridine density and thus the control of catalytic loadings can be achieved through a fine modification of silanization concentrations, which affords surfaces with tunable catalytic activity.

41. A complete insect from the Late Devonian period.

After terrestrialization, the diversification of arthropods and vertebrates is thought to have occurred in two distinct phases, the first between the Silurian and the Frasnian stages (Late Devonian period) (425-385 million years (Myr) ago), and the second characterized by the emergence of numerous new major taxa, during the Late Carboniferous period (after 345 Myr ago). These two diversification periods bracket the depauperate vertebrate Romer's gap (360-345 Myr ago) and arthropod gap (385-325 Myr ago), which could be due to preservational artefact. Although a recent molecular dating has given an age of 390 Myr for the Holometabola, the record of hexapods during the Early-Middle Devonian (411.5-391 Myr ago, Pragian to Givetian stages) is exceptionally sparse and based on fragmentary remains, which hinders the timing of this diversification. Indeed, although Devonian Archaeognatha are problematic, the Pragian of Scotland has given some Collembola and the incomplete insect Rhyniognatha, with its diagnostic dicondylic, metapterygotan mandibles. The oldest, definitively winged insects are from the Serpukhovian stage (latest Early Carboniferous period). Here we report the first complete Late Devonian insect, which was probably a terrestrial species. Its 'orthopteroid' mandibles are of an omnivorous type, clearly not modified for a solely carnivorous diet. This discovery narrows the 45-Myr gap in the fossil record of Hexapoda, and demonstrates further a first Devonian phase of diversification for the Hexapoda, as in vertebrates, and suggests that the Pterygota diversified before and during Romer's gap.

- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the anxiolytic effects of tetrahydropalmatine (THP) and its potential interaction with the benzodiazepine binding site on the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABAA) receptor in the male Sprague-Dawley rat. Tetrahydropalmatine (THP), an active component isolated from the Chinese herbal plant Corydalis yanhusuo, is used in Asia for its analgesic, sedative, and hypnotic properties during herbal therapy. Fifty-five rats were assigned to 1 of 5 groups with 11 rats per group: 1) control (vehicle), 2) THP, 3) midazolam, 4) midazolam with THP, and 5) flumazenil with THP. In this study, the elevated plus-maze measured the behavioral components of anxiety and motor movements. The data were analyzed using a 2-tailed multivariate analysis of variance to determine if a significant difference existed followed by the least significant difference post hoc test. The findings suggest that THP, 25 mg/kg, given via intraperitoneal injection, results in significant anxiolysis and decreased motor movements. Furthermore, flumazenil, 3 mg/kg, does not fully antagonize the effects of THP.

Poly(2-nonyl-2-oxazoline-block-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) block copolymer micelles were investigated as an alternative system to the approach proposed by He and Lodge (Y. He and T. P. Lodge, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2006, 128, 12666) for the thermoreversible transfer of micelles between a hydrophobic ionic liquid phase and an aqueous phase; this work describes the possibility of thermally triggering and controlling this process.

44. Evolution on a shaky piece of Gondwana: is local endemism recent in New Caledonia?

- Abstract
New Caledonia is well known as a hot spot of biodiversity whose origin as a land mass can be traced back to the Gondwanan supercontinent. The local flora and fauna, in addition to being remarkably rich and endemic, comprise many supposedly relictual groups. Does the New Caledonian biota date back to Gondwanan times, building up its richness and endemism over 100 Myr or does it result from recent diversifications after Tertiary geological catastrophic events? Here we use a molecular phylogenetic approach to answer this question with the study of the Neocaledonian cockroach genus Angustonicus belonging to the subfamily Tryonicinae from Australia and New Caledonia. Both geological and molecular dating show that the diversification of this group is less than two million years old, whatever the date of its origin itself. This dating is not consistent with hypotheses of Gondwanan richness and endemism in New Caledonian biota. In other terms, local richness and endemism at the specific level are not necessarily related to an old Gondwanan origin of the Neocaledonian groups., (© The Willi Hennig Society 2005.)

- Abstract
The geometric mean length (GML) is proposed as a new statistic aimed at describing the evenness of character changes on a tree for a given set of character optimizations. It is the geometric mean of the number of steps on each branch of the tree, varying between a maximum value when all branch lengths are equal, and a minimum value when all branches but one have only one character step. It can be scaled according to its theoretical maximum value, thus indicating a relative GML that allows a comparison of the evenness of character steps between different tree topologies.

46. Is Psammophily an Evolutionary Dead End? A Phylogenetic Test in the Genus Willemia (Collembola: Hypogastruridae).

The law of the unspecialized states that specialized taxa have evolved from more generalized ancestors. Moreover, it is usually assumed that ecological specialization is irreversible and hence leads to extinction. This study aims to test these assumptions using a phylogenetic framework in a case study within the springtail genus Willemia and its diverse life habits. This genus is represented mostly by loam-dwelling species (generalized condition), but some species are psammophilous, living in sandy habitats (specialized condition). Fifty-two morphological characters were examined in 34 of the 36 species of the genus and in three outgroups. The cladistic analysis yielded two most parsimonious trees (tree length 124 steps; consistency index 0.56; retention index 0.86). The evolution of psammophily versus loam-confined life is compared to the cladogram: unexpectedly, psammophily is not an evolutionary innovation that occurred once in a monophyletic group; the evolutionary scenario that parsimoniously fits the phylogeny suggests that psammophily is ancestral to the genus Willemia and reversed twice to loam-confined life. These results demonstrate that habitat generalists can evolve from habitat specialists and therefore that habitat specializations are not necessarily an evolutionary dead end. Many other seemingly specialized characters may be shown to be equally malleable.

1026 patients of more than 65 of age who underwent abdominal surgical treatment were retrospectively investigated with respect to pre-operative riskfactors, post-operative complications and mortality. Mortality after emergency intervention was with 16.54% about 3 times as high as after elective surgery (5.54%). 25.4% of all patients had no coexisting diseases. Preexisting diseases were cardiovascular (45.9%), hypertension (28.7%), pulmonary diseases (19.4%) and diabetes mellitus (16.6%). 37.32% of all patients showed one accompanying disease, 23.98% two, 10.4% three and 4 or more were described with 3.31%. The average number of riskfactors was 1.1 for patients aged 65-69 years, 1.34 for patients aged 70-74 years, 1.52 for those aged 75-79 years and 1.41 for patients over 80 years. There was a significant increase of mortality with rising numbers of riskfactors (p < 0.01). In 50.58% of all patients no post-operative complications developed. Cardiovascular, pulmonary and myocardial complications were the leading complications, occuring in 18.52%, 16.8% and 13.74% of patients, being followed by cerebral-vascular (5.63%) and renal (4.09%) complications. The incidence of medical complications was significantly higher after emergency than after elective surgery (p < 0.01). At least 4 and more complications occurred after 2.56% of elective interventions but after 20.24% of emergency surgery. A significant increase of postoperative complications has been observed with increasing extent of anaesthesia (p < 0.01). Moreover, the incidence of complications increased significantly with the amount of preoperative coexisting diseases (p < 0.01).
