- Abstract
This chapter deals with the development and spread of vending machines and the automatic selling of preserved and shelf-stable foods, more rarely of freshly prepared food, in the 20th century. By making food accessible 24/7, from the workplaces to everywhere people were transiting, this process marked the advent of new consumption practices: faster and cheaper, individual, free from any intermediary and anonymous, practically ubiquitous, in contrast to other collective forms of eating out (cafes, restaurants, pubs, etc.). Several actors led this process: the vending machine industry, the food companies and their product strategies, from design to packaging, the catering operators, who invented new systems such as ‘automatic restaurant’ chains and 24/7 open shops. While automatic vending has become a global presence, different paths and stories developed between Japan, North America and Europe. After a frame of this evolution at an international level, the paper focuses the Italian case. Despite the international pressures, for instance in the field of beverages, automatic selling of food has been accepted slowly, if compared with other states. Then the development of a specialized industry and market of coffee machines, where today Italy is a leader in Europe, will be considered.

Meteorology And Climatology ,Environment Pollution - Abstract
An algorithm to simulate locations of atmospheric motion vectors (AMVs) for use in observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs) is described and demonstrated. It is intended to obviate likely deficiencies in nature run data [standard meteorological parameters and aerosol tracers] if used to produce images for feature tracking. The algorithm employs probabilistic functions that are tuned based on distributions of real observations and histograms of nature run fields. For distinct observation types, the algorithm produces geographical and vertical distributions, time - mean counts, and typical spacings of simulated locations that are, at least, qualitatively similar to those of real observations and are associated with nature run cloud and water vapor fields. It thus appears suitable for generating realistic atmospheric motion vectors for use in observing system simulation experiments.

Earth Resources And Remote Sensing - Abstract
In an Observing System Simulation Experiment, the full, true state of the simulated atmosphere is known. This knowledge allows the direct calculation of analysis and forecast errors, and also may be used in conjunction with an adjoint tool to calculate metrics that are unachievable in the real world. For example, the errors that result from the use of the analysis state as verification when running adjoint calculations of observation impact on a forecast can be quantified. The adjoint itself can also be used to operate on the analysis state rather than on the forecast state. Results from these and other adjoint experiments using the NASA/GMAO OSSE framework will be presented.

Space Sciences (General) - Abstract
The Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) atmospheric model and data assimilation system are used to perform an Observing System Simulation Experiment (OSSE) for the proposed MISTiC Wind mission. The GEOS OSSE includes a reference simulation (the Nature Run), from which the pseudo-observations are generated. These pseuo-observations span the entire suite of in-situ and space space-based observations presently used in operational weather prediction, with the addition of the MISTiC-Wind dataset. New observation operators have been constructed for the MISTiC Wind data, including both the radiances measured in the 4-micron part of the solar spectrum and the winds derived from these radiances. The OSSE examines the impacts on global forecast skill of adding these observations to the current operational suite, showing substantial improvements in forecasts when the wind information are added. It is shown that a constellation of four MISTiC Wind satellites provides more benefit than a single platform, largely because of the increased accuracy of the feature-derived wind measurements when more platforms are used.

Geosciences (General) - Abstract
NASA is investigating the utility of a strategically-constructed constellation of infrared sounders on board small satellites to be able to ultimately provide spaceborne measurements of wind. The method proposed by instrument teams is to fly multiple instruments in complementary orbits so that atmospheric motion vector measurements can be made. As part of the investigation of this measurement approach, the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center performed a set of Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs) to demonstrate the value of the wind measurements as well as the corresponding infrared radiance observations that will come from the constellation. This work was an extension of the GMAO OSSE infrastructure and is in the context of the MISTIC Winds concept. It is noted, though, that this provided insight to the overall measurement strategy. This talk addresses the simulation of the atmospheric motion vectors retrieved via the constellation, the simulation and validation of the radiance observations measured via the constellation, the specification of observations errors for both winds and radiances, and the extension of the data assimilation system to utilize these additional observations on top of a full global observation system. Finally, the results from a set of OSSE experiments is presented.

Geosciences (General) - Abstract
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (NASA/GMAO) has spent more than a decade developing and implementing a global Observing System Simulation Experiment framework for use in evaluting both new observation types as well as the behavior of data assimilation systems. The NASA/GMAO OSSE has constantly evolved to relect changes in the Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation data assimiation system, the Global Earth Observing System model, version 5 (GEOS-5), and the real world observational network. Software and observational datasets for the GMAO OSSE are publicly available, along with a technical report. Substantial modifications have recently been made to the NASA/GMAO OSSE framework, including the character of synthetic observation errors, new instrument types, and more sophisticated atmospheric wind vectors. These improvements will be described, along with the overall performance of the current OSSE. Lessons learned from investigations into correlated errors and model error will be discussed.

Mapping ,Indoor Localization ,Terahertz ,Radio-Slam - Abstract
In this paper, we introduce and experimentally validate a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithm based on the processing of radar data captured in the Terahertz (THz) band. We describe a measurement campaign carried out using a dedicated setup with the purpose to investigate the main properties of the signal backscattered in an indoor environment in the THz band and assess the performance of the proposed radio-SLAM (R-SLAM) algorithm. Numerical results show that a mobile radar can track itself with high accuracy in a real scenario, without the need for any localization infrastructure, and map the surrounding environment at the same time. This validation represents one of the very first experimental characterization of THz SLAM for the automatic mapping of the indoors.

Meteorology And Climatology - Abstract
Understanding the characteristics of background error is vital to the design and performance of data assimilation systems. However, the true state of the atmosphere is unknown, and qualitative determination of background error is thus a challenge. We present an exploration of background error characteristics using the NASA Global Modeling and Assimilation Office Observing System Simulation Experiment framework, where the presence of the Nature Run allows direct calculation of the background error. The behavior of the data assimilation system (DAS) can be compared with the character of the background error, and performance of the DAS will be investigated in a series of both idealized and realistic experiments.

Earth Resources And Remote Sensing ,Meteorology And Climatology - Abstract
The Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) observing system simulation experiment (OSSE) framework is used to explore the response of analysis error and forecast skill to observation quality. In an OSSE, synthetic observations may be created that have much smaller error than real observations, and precisely quantified error may be applied to these synthetic observations. Three experiments are performed in which synthetic observations with magnitudes of applied observation error that vary from zero to twice the estimated realistic error are ingested into the Goddard Earth Observing System Model (GEOS-5) with Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI) data assimilation for a one-month period representing July. The analysis increment and observation innovation are strongly impacted by observation error, with much larger variances for increased observation error. The analysis quality is degraded by increased observation error, but the change in root-mean-square error of the analysis state is small relative to the total analysis error. Surprisingly, in the 120 hour forecast increased observation error only yields a slight decline in forecast skill in the extratropics, and no discernable degradation of forecast skill in the tropics.

Mathematical And Computer Sciences (General) - Abstract
The Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) has been working to promote its prototype four-dimensional variational (4DVAR) system to a version that can be exercised at operationally desirable configurations. Beyond a general circulation model (GeM) and an analysis system, traditional 4DV AR requires availability of tangent linear (TL) and adjoint (AD) models of the corresponding GeM. The GMAO prototype 4DVAR uses the finite-volume-based GEOS GeM and the Grid-point Statistical Interpolation (GSI) system for the first two, and TL and AD models derived ITom an early version of the finite-volume hydrodynamics that is scientifically equivalent to the present GEOS nonlinear GeM but computationally rather outdated. Specifically, the TL and AD models hydrodynamics uses a simple (I-dimensional) latitudinal MPI domain decomposition, which has consequent low scalability and prevents the prototype 4DV AR ITom being used in realistic applications. In the near future, GMAO will be upgrading its operational GEOS GCM (and assimilation system) to use a cubed-sphere-based hydrodynamics. This versions of the dynamics scales to thousands of processes and has led to a decision to re-derive the TL and AD models for this more modern dynamics, thus taking advantage of a two-dimensional MPI decomposition and improved scalability properties. With the aid of the Transformation of Algorithms in FORTRAN (l'AF) automatic adjoint generation tool and some hand-coding, a version of the cubed-sphere-based TL and AD models, with a simplified vertical diffusion scheme, is now available, enabling multiple configurations of standard implementations of 4DV AR in GEOS. Concurrent to this development, collaboration with the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and the Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) has allowed GMAO to implement a hybrid-ensemble capability within the GEOS data assimilation system. Both 3Dand 4D-ensemble capabilities are presently available thus allowing GMAO to now evaluate the performance and benefit of various ensemble and variational assimilation strategies. This presentation will cover the most recent developments taking place at GMAO and show results from various comparisons from traditional techniques to more recent ensemble-based ones.

Communications And Radar - Abstract
With the launch of the European Space Agency's Atmospheric Dynamics Mission (ADM-Aeolus) in 2011 and the call for the 3D-Winds mission in National Research Council's decadal survey, direct spaceborne measurements of vertical wind profiles are imminent via Doppler wind lidar technology. Part of the preparedness for such missions is the development of the proper data assimilation methodology for handling such observations. Since no heritage measurements exist in space, the Joint Observing System Simulation Experiment (Joint OSSE) framework is being utilized to generate a realistic proxy dataset as a precursor to flight. These data are being used for the development of the Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI) data assimilation system utilized at a number of centers through the United States including the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center and at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NOAA/NWS/NCEP). This effort will be presented, including the methodology of proxy data generation, the handling of line-of-sight wind measurements within the GSI, and the impact on both analyses and forecasts with the addition of the new data type.

Disorders of mineral metabolism, including secondary hyperparathyroidism, are thought to contribute to extraskeletal (including vascular) calcification among patients with chronic kidney disease. It has been hypothesized that treatment with the calcimimetic agent cinacalcet might reduce the risk of death or nonfatal cardiovascular events in such patients. In this clinical trial, we randomly assigned 3883 patients with moderate-to-severe secondary hyperparathyroidism (median level of intact parathyroid hormone, 693 pg per milliliter [10th to 90th percentile, 363 to 1694]) who were undergoing hemodialysis to receive either cinacalcet or placebo. All patients were eligible to receive conventional therapy, including phosphate binders, vitamin D sterols, or both. The patients were followed for up to 64 months. The primary composite end point was the time until death, myocardial infarction, hospitalization for unstable angina, heart failure, or a peripheral vascular event. The primary analysis was performed on the basis of the intention-to-treat principle. The median duration of study-drug exposure was 21.2 months in the cinacalcet group, versus 17.5 months in the placebo group. The primary composite end point was reached in 938 of 1948 patients (48.2%) in the cinacalcet group and 952 of 1935 patients (49.2%) in the placebo group (relative hazard in the cinacalcet group vs. the placebo group, 0.93; 95% confidence interval, 0.85 to 1.02; P=0.11). Hypocalcemia and gastrointestinal adverse events were significantly more frequent in patients receiving cinacalcet. In an unadjusted intention-to-treat analysis, cinacalcet did not significantly reduce the risk of death or major cardiovascular events in patients with moderate-to-severe secondary hyperparathyroidism who were undergoing dialysis. Background— Patients with kidney disease have disordered bone and mineral metabolism, including elevated serum concentrations of fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23). These elevated concentrations are associated with cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. The objective was to determine the effects of the calcimimetic cinacalcet (versus placebo) on reducing serum FGF23 and whether changes in FGF23 are associated with death and cardiovascular events. Methods and Results— This was a secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial comparing cinacalcet to placebo in addition to conventional therapy (phosphate binders/vitamin D) in patients receiving hemodialysis with secondary hyperparathyroidism (intact parathyroid hormone ≥300 pg/mL). The primary study end point was time to death or a first nonfatal cardiovascular event (myocardial infarction, hospitalization for angina, heart failure, or a peripheral vascular event). This analysis included 2985 patients (77% of randomized) with serum samples at baseline and 2602 patients (67%) with samples at both baseline and week 20. The results demonstrated that a significantly larger proportion of patients randomized to cinacalcet had ≥30% (68% versus 28%) reductions in FGF23. Among patients randomized to cinacalcet, a ≥30% reduction in FGF23 between baseline and week 20 was associated with a nominally significant reduction in the primary composite end point (relative hazard, 0.82; 95% confidence interval, 0.69–0.98), cardiovascular mortality (relative hazard, 0.66; 95% confidence interval, 0.50–0.87), sudden cardiac death (relative hazard, 0.57; 95% confidence interval, 0.37–0.86), and heart failure (relative hazard, 0.69; 95% confidence interval, 0.48–0.99). Conclusions— Treatment with cinacalcet significantly lowers serum FGF23. Treatment-induced reductions in serum FGF23 are associated with lower rates of cardiovascular death and major cardiovascular events. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov . - Abstract
The chapter shows how European institutions and policies influenced the Italian dairy sector from the 1960s up to the new millennium. It illustrates in particular the effects of the Common Agricultural Policy on the productions and price of milk, the productive systems of the dairy sector, the market and the foreign competition for the Italian dairy products. All the decisions taken by the European institutions in fact modified the existing conditions of European dairy markets and obliged the dairy firms to adapt in order to function optimally and at the same time to maintain their fully competitiveness. As European institutions were conscious of the relevant influence of their choices and policies on the development of the dairy sector, so they also controlled different phases of dairy production and its quality labeling system Besides, the chapter shows how a relevant European institution, such as the European Investment Bank (EIB), helped the Italian dairy sector. The EIB in fact financed the improvement of the infrastructures which linked the Italian dairy factories to the European markets. Moreover, it partially financed the renewal of some dairy plants in the Southern Italy.

- Abstract
The first part of the contribution analyses the Italian dairy industry, using data the 1937 industrial census. This study shows a complex sector, characterized by the presence of numerous small and medium sized companies and by a strong link between milk production and cheese-making. The second part of the chapter deals with the main trend in the industry between the end of Second World War and the beginning of a real integration of EC markets.

- Abstract
Polenghi Lombardo has long been a major protagonist in the development of the dairy industry in Italy. Although it was not a cooperative, since its origin in late nineteenth century it was strongly linked to the Lombard and Italian agriculture, even in property and control. Large-scale production, diversification and flexibility – due to a complete exploitation cycle of milk – gave the company strengths superior to those of other producers. This allowed it to expand in Italy and win relevant market shares abroad. The chapter summarizes also the crisis the company had to face with the emergence of a new ownership in the period following the Second World War (when the majority shareholding passed under the control of the main Italian agricultural cooperative group), and then the pressure of foreign competition on the dairy sector due to the European Common Market and the Common Agricultural Policy. In early 1990s the acquisition of the company by competitors with inconsistent industrial strategies determined the gradual downsizing and actual disappearance of Polenghi Lombardo.
