Abstract

The energetic landscape at the interface between electron donating and accepting molecular materials favors efficient conversion of intermolecular charge-transfer states (CTS) into free charge carriers in high-performance organic solar cells. Here, we elucidate how interfacial energetics, charge generation and radiative recombination are affected by structural ordering. We experimentally determine the CTS binding energy of a series of model, small molecule donor-acceptor blends, where the used acceptors (B2PYMPM, B3PYMPM and B4PYMPM) differ only in the nitrogen position of their lateral pyridine rings. We find that the formation of an ordered, face-on molecular packing in B4PYMPM is beneficial to efficient, field-independent charge separation, leading to fill factors over 70% in photovoltaic devices. This is rationalized by a comprehensive computational protocol showing that, compared to the more amorphous and isotropically oriented B2PYMPM, the higher order of the B4PYMPM molecules provides more delocalized CTS. Furthermore, we find no correlation between the quantum efficiency of radiative free charge carrier recombination and the bound or unbound nature of the CTS. This work highlights the importance of structural ordering at donor-acceptor interfaces for efficient free carrier generation and shows that more ordering and less bound CT states do not preclude efficient radiative recombination.

Abstract

We investigated the mixed-stack charge-transfer crystal, N,N'-dimethylphenazine-TCNQ (M$_2$P-TCNQ), which is polar at room temperature and just at the neutral-to-ionic interface (ionicity $\rho \approx 0.5$). We detect the typical dielectric signature of a relaxor ferroelectric and an asymmetric positive-up-negative-down behavior. While relaxor ferroelectricity is usually ascribed to disorder in the crystal, we find no evidence for structural disorder in the investigated crystals. To elucidate the origin of M$_2$P-TCNQ's dielectric properties we perform parallel structural and spectroscopic measurements, associated with theoretical modeling and quantum-mechanical calculations. Our combined effort points to a highly polarizable electronic system that is strongly coupled to lattice vibrations. The found indications for polarization reversal imply flipping of the bent conformation of the M$_2$P molecule with an associated energy barrier of a few tens of an eV, broadly consistent with an Arrhenius fit of the dielectric relaxation times. While the polarization is mostly of electronic origin, its possible reversal implies slow collective motions that are affected by solid-state intermolecular interactions., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

Clinical features and natural history of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) differ widely among different countries and during different phases of the pandemia. Here, we aimed to evaluate the case fatality rate (CFR) and to identify predictors of mortality in a cohort of COVID-19 patients admitted to three hospitals of Northern Italy between March 1 and April 28, 2020. All these patients had a confirmed diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection by molecular methods. During the study period 504/1697 patients died; thus, overall CFR was 29.7%. We looked for predictors of mortality in a subgroup of 486 patients (239 males, 59%; median age 71 years) for whom sufficient clinical data were available at data cut-off. Among the demographic and clinical variables considered, age, a diagnosis of cancer, obesity and current smoking independently predicted mortality. When laboratory data were added to the model in a further subgroup of patients, age, the diagnosis of cancer, and the baseline PaO2/FiO2 ratio were identified as independent predictors of mortality. In conclusion, the CFR of hospitalized patients in Northern Italy during the ascending phase of the COVID-19 pandemic approached 30%. The identification of mortality predictors might contribute to better stratification of individual patient risk.

Abstract

Introduction. The clinical course of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is highly heterogenous, ranging from asymptomatic to fatal forms. The identification of clinical and laboratory predictors of poor prognosis may assist clinicians in monitoring strategies and therapeutic decisions. Materials and Methods. In this study, we retrospectively assessed the prognostic value of a simple tool, the complete blood count, on a cohort of 664 patients ( F 260; 39%, median age 70 (56-81) years) hospitalized for COVID-19 in Northern Italy. We collected demographic data along with complete blood cell count; moreover, the outcome of the hospital in-stay was recorded. Results. At data cut-off, 221/664 patients (33.3%) had died and 453/664 (66.7%) had been discharged. Red cell distribution width (RDW) ( χ 2 10.4; p < 0.001 ), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte (NL) ratio ( χ 2 7.6; p = 0.006 ), and platelet count ( χ 2 5.39; p = 0.02 ), along with age ( χ 2 87.6; p < 0.001 ) and gender ( χ 2 17.3; p < 0.001 ), accurately predicted in-hospital mortality. Hemoglobin levels were not associated with mortality. We also identified the best cut-off for mortality prediction: a NL ratio > 4.68 was characterized by an odds ratio for in-hospital mortality OR = 3.40 (2.40-4.82), while the OR for a RDW > 13.7 % was 4.09 (2.87-5.83); a platelet count > 166,000 /μL was, conversely, protective (OR: 0.45 (0.32-0.63)). Conclusion. Our findings arise the opportunity of stratifying COVID-19 severity according to simple lab parameters, which may drive clinical decisions about monitoring and treatment.

Abstract

The growing demand of nanomaterials is pushing towards the development of alternative strategies for the safe and sustainable production of nanoparticles. At the same time, to ensure high performances, a fine control over the product specifications is required. We focused on a bottom-up method combined with a mechanical disaggregation technique using a wet bead-stirring process, since it provides numerous advantages over other approaches, including the minimization of the nanoparticles air dispersion and a greater control over the final product. However, given the broad variability of the parameters involved in both the setup and operation of the process, it is essential to combine the experiments with a theoretical-simulative study to optimize the design. The present activity consists in the preliminary simulation of the interactions among the grinding beads, modelled through the discrete element method (DEM), and the magnetic stirrer. This approach, providing information regarding the frequency and energy of collisions, which can be related to the properties of the produced nanoparticles, allows a fine tuning of the process parameters.

Abstract

In this work, we study in detail the hydrodynamics and the Brownian motions of a spheroidal particle suspended in a Newtonian fluid near a flat rigid wall. We employ 3D Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations to compute how the mobility tensor of the spheroid varies with both the particle-wall separation distance and the particle orientation. We then study the Brownian motion of the spheroid by means of a discretized Langevin equation. We specifically focus on the additional drift terms arising from the position and orientational dependence of the mobility matrix. In this respect, we also propose a numerically convenient approximation of the orientational divergence of the mobility matrix that is required in the solution of the Langevin equation. Our results illustrate that both hydrodynamics and Brownian motions of a spheroidal particle near a confining wall display novel features from those of a sphere in the same type of confinement. The clinical efficacy of SLIT has been established in a number of clinical trials and meta-analyses. However, because SLIT is self-administered by patients without medical supervision, the degree of patient adherence with treatment is still a concern. The objective of this study was to evaluate the perception by allergists of issues related to SLIT adherence.Methods: We performed a questionnaire-based survey of 296 Italian allergists, based on the adherence issues known from previous studies. The perception of importance of each item was assessed by a VAS scale ranging from 0 to 10.Results: Patient perception of clinical efficacy was considered the most important factor (ranked 1 by 54% of allergists), followed by the possibility of reimbursement (ranked 1 by 34%), and by the absence of side effects (ranked 1 by 21%). Patient education, regular follow-up, and ease of use of SLIT were ranked first by less than 20% of allergists.Conclusion: These findings indicate that clinical efficacy, cost, and side effects are perceived as the major issues influencing patient adherence to SLIT, and that further improvement of adherence is likely to be achieved by improving the patient information provided by prescribers.Keywords: adherence, sublingual immunotherapy, efficacy, cost, side effects

Abstract

In this paper, we investigate the retraction of a circular viscoelastic liquid film with a hole initially present in its center by means of finite element numerical simulations. We study the whole retraction process, aiming at understanding the hole opening dynamics both when the hole does not feel any confinement and when it interacts with the solid wall bounding the film. The retraction behavior is also interpreted through a simple toy model, that highlights the physical mechanism underlying the process. We consider three different viscoelastic constitutive equations, namely, Oldroyd-B, Giesekus (Gsk), and Phan Thien-Tanner (PTT) models, and several system geometries, in terms of the film initial radius and thickness. For each given geometry, we investigate the effects of liquid inertia, elasticity, and flow-dependent viscosity on the dynamics of the hole opening. Depending on the relative strength of such parameters, qualitatively different features can appear in the retracting film shape and dynamics. When inertia is relevant, as far as the opening hole does not interact with the wall bounding the film, the influence of liquid elasticity is very moderate, and the retraction dynamics tends to the one of Newtonian sheets; when the hole starts to interact with the solid wall, hole radius/opening velocity oscillations are detected. Such oscillations enhance at increasing elasticity. From the morphological point of view, the formation of a rim at the edge of the retracting film is observed. If inertial forces become less relevant with respect to viscous forces, R-oscillations disappear, the hole opening velocity goes through a maximum and then monotonically decays to zero, and no rim forms during the film retraction. Abstract

Organic pi-conjugated polymers are deemed to be soft materials with strong electron-phonon coupling, which results in the formation of polarons, i.e., charge carriers dressed by self-localized distortion of the nuclei. Universal signatures for polarons are optical resonances below the band gap and intense vibrational modes (IVMs), both found in the infrared (IR) spectral region. Here, we study p-doped conjugated homo-and copolymers by combining first-principles modelling and optical spectroscopy from the far-IR to the visible. Polaronic IVMs are found to feature absorption intensities comparable to purely electronic transitions and, most remarkably, show only loose resemblance to the Raman or IR-active modes of the neutral polymer. The IVM frequency is dramatically scaled down (up to 50%) compared to the backbone carbon-stretching modes in the pristine polymers. The very large intensity of IVMs is associated with displacement of the excess positive charge along the backbone driven by specific vibrational modes. We propose a quantitative picture for the identification of these polaron shifting modes that solely based on structural information, directly correlates with their IR intensity. This finding finally discloses the elusive microscopic mechanism behind the huge IR intensity of IVMs in doped polymeric semiconductors.

Abstract

This paper presents an approach useful to analyse the performance of the product development model adopted by an organisation. A dynamic information management perspective of the development process was assumed while the nature of the information and knowledge flows exchanged to coordinate tasks was the primary focus of this study. In particular, the effect of information and knowledge flows ambiguity was taken into account. Coordination between tasks was modelled by using the Design Structure Matrix (DSM) tool. The dynamic behaviour of the Product Development Process (PDP) and the evolution of information and knowledge quality at the interface between tasks was foresighted through simulation. System dynamics was used as a modelling framework. This approach was implemented to analyse a specific subsystem – ‘the climatic system’ – of a new car model recently developed by a large Italian car manufacturer. Data were collected by administrating a questionnaire to technical managers and engineers involved in the development process of the subsystem. Continuous interaction and feedback from them was useful to build the process model simulated in our study and to test scales to measure model variables developed for the purpose in the first part of the study and discuss the simulation outcome and possible organisational solutions to correct bad performance.

32. The effect of wall slip on the dynamics of a spherical particle in Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids subjected to shear and Poiseuille flow

Abstract

We address the effect of wall slip on the dynamics of a spherical particle suspended in an inertialess Newtonian or viscoelastic shear-thinning fluid under shear or Poiseuille flow. The study is performed through 3D direct finite element simulations by employing an Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian method for the particle motion. In both shear and Poiseuille flows, wall slip reduces the difference between the particle translational velocity along the flow direction and the velocity of the unperturbed fluid, and slows down the particle rotational velocity. Remarkably, in a viscoelastic fluid, the presence of wall slip reverses the migration direction as compared to the no-slip case. Hence, for sufficiently high slip coefficients, all the particles migrate toward the channel midplane in shear flow and toward the channel centerline in Poiseuille flow, regardless of their initial position through the channel.

Abstract

We investigate through numerical simulations the dynamics of a neo-Hookean elastic prolate spheroid suspended in a Newtonian fluid under shear flow. Both initial orientations of the particle within and outside the shear plane and both unbounded and confined flow geometries are considered. In unbounded flow, when the particle starts on the shear plane, two stable regimes of motion are found, i.e., trembling (TR), where the particle shape periodically elongates and compresses in the shear plane and the angle between its major semiaxis and the flow direction oscillates around a positive mean value, and tumbling (TU), where the particle shape periodically changes and its major axis performs complete revolutions around the vorticity axis. When the particle is initially oriented out of the shear plane, more complex dynamics arise. Geometric confinement of the particle between the moving walls also influences its deformation and regime of motion. In addition, when the particle is initially located in an asymmetric position with respect to the moving walls, particle lateral migration is detected. The effects on the particle dynamics of the geometric and physical parameters that rule the system are investigated.

35. Separation of particles in non‐Newtonian fluids flowing in T‐shaped microchannels

Abstract

Background: The flow of suspensions through bifurcations is encountered in several applications. It is known that the partitioning of particles at a bifurcation is different from the partitioning of the suspending fluid, which allows particle separation and fractionation. Previous works have mainly investigated the dynamics of particles sus- pended in Newtonian liquids. Methods: In this work, we study through 2D direct numerical simulations the par- titioning of particles suspended in non-Newtonian fluids flowing in a T-junction. We adopt a flow configuration such that the two outlets are orthogonal, and their flow rates can be tuned. A fictitious domain method combined with a grid deformation procedure is used. The effect of fluid rheology on the partitioning of particles between the two outlets is investigated by selecting different constitutive equations to model the suspending liquid. Specifically, an inelastic shear-thinning (Bird-Carreau) and a viscoelastic shear-thinning (Giesekus) models have been chosen; the results are also compared with the case of a Newtonian suspending liquid. Results: Simulations are carried out by varying the confinement, the inlet flow rate and the relative weight of the two outlet flow rates. For each condition, the fluxes of particles through the two outflow channels are computed. The results show that shear- thinning does not have a relevant effect as compared to the equivalent Newtonian case, i.e., with the same choice of the relative outlet flow rates. On the other hand, fluid elasticity strongly alters the fraction of particles exiting the two outlets as compared to the inlet. Such effect is more pronounced for larger particles and inlet flow rates. Conclusions: The results illustrated here show the feasibility to efficiently separate/ fractionate particles by size, through the use of viscoelastic suspending liquids.

Abstract

In this work, we present 2D numerical simulations on the migration of a particle suspended in a viscoelastic fluid under Poiseuille flow at finite Reynolds numbers, in order to clarify the simultaneous effects of viscoelasticity and inertia on the lateral particle motion. The governing equations are solved through the finite element method by adopting an Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation to handle the particle motion. The high accuracy provided by such a method even for very small particle-wall distances, combined with proper stabilization techniques for viscoelastic fluids, allow obtaining convergent solutions at relatively large flow rates, as compared to previous works. As a result, the detailed non-linear dynamics of the migration phenomenon in a significant range of Reynolds and Deborah numbers is presented. The simulations show that, in agreement with the previous literature, a mastercurve relating the migration velocity of the particle to its vertical position completely describes the phenomenon. Remarkably, we found that, for comparable values of the Deborah and Reynolds numbers, inertial effects are negligible: migration is in practice driven by fluid viscoelasticity only. Abstract

Dilute suspensions of spheres in a viscoelastic liquid under oscillatory shear floware studied via numerical simulations. In linear viscoelastic regime, the 3D finite elementsimulation results agree with the analytical results from Palierne (1990).The analysis is extended to Large Amplitude Oscillations (LAOS). The rotation rate of thesphere as well as the bulk rheology are investigated. The moduli increase when particles are added into the fluid, in agreement with experimental findings. In the nonlinear range both moduli are found to be decreasing functions of the forcing amplitude. The non-linear response of the material is also illustrated by performing a Fourier analysis of the bulk shear stresssignal which shows the appearance of higher harmonic contributions.

Abstract

In inertialess suspensions of rigid particles, the rotational motion of each particle is governed by the so-called freely rotating condition, whereby the total torque acting on the particle must be zero. In this work, we study the effect of viscoelasticity of the suspending liquid on the rotation period of a sphere by means of three-dimensional finite element simulations, for conditions corresponding to a macroscopic shear flow. The simulation results capture the slowing down of the rotation, relative to the Newtonian case, which was recently observed in experiments. It is shown that such a phenomenon depends on the specific constitutive equation adopted for the viscoelastic liquid. Analysis of transients shows a clear correlation between rotation rate and the development of first normal stress difference. © 2008 The Society of Rheology.

Abstract

We estimated nitrogen (N) use by trees of three poplar species exposed for 3 years to free air CO2 enrichment (FACE) and determined whether the CO2 treatment affected the future N availability of the plantation. Trees were harvested at the end of the first 3-year rotation and N concentration and content of woody tissues determined. Nitrogen uptake of fine roots and litter was measured throughout the first crop rotation. The results were related to previously published variations in soil N content during the same period. We estimated retranslocation from green leaves and processes determining N mobilization and immobilization, such as mineralization and nitrification, and N immobilization in litter and microbial biomass. In all species, elevated CO2 concentration ([CO2]) significantly increased nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE; net primary productivity per unit of annual N uptake), decreased N concentration in most plant tissues, but did not significantly change cumulative N uptake by trees over the rotation. Total soil N was depleted more in elevated [CO2] than in ambient [CO2], although not significantly for all soil layers. The effect of elevated [CO2] was usually similar for all species, although differences among species were sometimes significant. During the first 3-year rotation, productivity of the plantation remained high in the elevated [CO2] treatment. However, we observed a potential reduction in N availability in response to elevated [CO2].
