Overhead distribution lines play a vital role in distributing electricity, however, their freestanding nature makes them vulnerable to extreme weather conditions and resultant disruption of supply. The current UK regulation of power networks means preemptive mitigation of disruptions avoids financial penalties for distribution companies, making accurate fault predictions of direct financial importance. Here we present predictive models developed for a UK network based on gradient-boosted location, scale, and shape models, providing spatio-temporal predictions of faults based on forecast weather conditions. The models presented are based on (a) tree base learners or (b) penalised smooth and linear base learners -- leading to a Generalised Additive Model (GAM) structure, with the latter category of models providing best performance in terms of out-of-sample log-likelihood. The models are fitted to fifteen years of fault and weather data and are shown to provide good accuracy over multi-day forecast windows, giving tangible support to power restoration., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures, based on the MSc dissertation of the primary author submitted for the MSc degree in Applied Statistics and Datamining at the University of St Andrews in 2021 -- under the supervision of the co-author

CARBON fixation , *ELECTRON transport , *PLANT development , *SOLAR energy , *PLANT growth , *RESPIRATION in plants - Abstract
Summary: Plants rely on solar energy to synthesize ATP and NADPH for photosynthetic carbon fixation and all cellular need. Mitochondrial respiration is essential in plants, but this may be due to heterotrophic bottlenecks during plant development or because it is also necessary in photosynthetically active cells. In this study, we examined in vivo changes of cytosolic ATP concentration in response to light, employing a biosensing strategy in the moss Physcomitrium patens and revealing increased cytosolic ATP concentration caused by photosynthetic activity.Plants depleted of respiratory Complex I showed decreased cytosolic ATP accumulation, highlighting a critical role of mitochondrial respiration in light‐dependent ATP supply of the cytosol. Consistently, targeting mitochondrial ATP production directly, through the construction of mutants deficient in mitochondrial ATPase (complex V), led to drastic growth reduction, despite only minor alterations in photosynthetic electron transport activity.Since P. patens is photoautotrophic throughout its development, we conclude that heterotrophic bottlenecks cannot account for the indispensable role of mitochondrial respiration in plants. Instead, our results support that mitochondrial respiration is essential for ATP provision to the cytosol in photosynthesizing cells. Mitochondrial respiration provides metabolic integration, ensuring supply of cytosolic ATP essential for supporting plant growth and development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
[EN] The widespread use of herbicides has contributed to the evolution of resistance in many weed species, including Digitaria sanguinalis (DIGSA), a grass important as weed that presents presents biotypes with different resistance mechanisms to acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides. Within the framework of eco-evolutionary dynamics in agroecosystems, it is important to pay attention to ecological interactions, such as those between plants and pathogens, since they could affect herbicide-resistant (R) and herbicide-susceptible (S) biotypes differently. One of these biotic interactions is the one established between DIGSA and Ustilago syntherismae, a fungus whose infection can prevent seed production in plants. An experiment has been carried out in which teliospores of the fungus have been placed in contact with seeds of R and S biotypes of DIGSA, applying a vacuum, in order to evaluate their infection by the fungus. The seeds were germinated in Petri dishes at 20°C 12h darkness / 30°C 12h light. After 10 days, the seedlings were cleared, stained and observed under an optical microscope to detect the systemic infection. The proportion of infected seedlings was subjected to statistical analysis. The results showed that the mean percentage of infection was significantly higher in the R biotype (98.4%) than in the S biotype (93.7%).

This work is the result of an international research effort to determine the main impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on marine recreational fishing. Changes were assessed on (1) access to fishing, derived from lockdowns and other mobility restrictions; (2) ecosystems, because of alterations in fishing intensity and human presence; (3) the blue economy, derived from alterations in the investments and expenses of the fishers; and (4) society, in relation to variations in fishers’ health and well-being. For this, a consultation with experts from 16 countries was carried out, as well as an international online survey aimed at recreational fishers, that included specific questions designed to capture fishers’ heterogeneity in relation to behavior, skills and know-how, and vital involvement. Fishers’ participation in the online survey (5,998 recreational fishers in 15 countries) was promoted through a marketing campaign. The sensitivity of the fishers’ clustering procedure, based on the captured heterogeneity, was evaluated by SIMPER analysis and by generalized linear models. Results from the expert consultation highlighted a worldwide reduction in marine recreational fishing activity. Lower human-driven pressures are expected to generate some benefits for marine ecosystems. However, experts also identified high negative impacts on the blue economy, as well as on fisher health and well-being because of the loss of recreational fishing opportunities. Most (98%) of the fishers who participated in the online survey were identified as advanced, showing a much higher degree of commitment to recreational fishing than basic fishers (2%). Advanced fishers were, in general, more pessimistic about the impacts of COVID-19, reporting higher reductions in physical activity and fish consumption, as well as poorer quality of night rest, foul mood, and raised more concerns about their health status. Controlled and safe access to marine recreational fisheries during pandemics would provide benefits to the health and well-being of people and reduce negative socioeconomic impacts, especially for vulnerable social groups.

The transport of food products in amphorae was a basic pillar for the maritime-oriented economies and sustenance supplies of the Phoenician and Punic communities of first millennium BC southern Iberia. Over the last few decades, numerous investigations have been carried out aimed at identifying the manufacturing sites of these amphorae, at defining both their typological and chronological aspects, the features of their fabrics, and focusing on the relationship of certain types with specific contents (De Frutos and Muñoz, 1994; 1996; Muñoz and De Frutos, 2006; Sáez Romero, 2008). Little attention has been paid to other important issues, including the production process of such containers, the operational sequence, and the technology used to produce them in large quantities since at least the 6th century BC This contribution aims to systematize the information on the parts of potter's wheels found in the south of the Iberian Peninsula (See Figure 1) and based on this data, to raise new hypotheses about the type of wheel used to produce amphorae in the 5th century BC. Using 3D digital models and replicas of these potter's wheels, we also reflect on their turning potential, dimensions, and ways of using them. This is a stepping stone for the identification of models which were potentially in use in the workshops of the Bay of Cadiz (Punic Gadir) at the time (See Figure 2), and how local artisans produced the T-11213 amphorae, a key type for the regional salted fish seaborne trade.

The research aims to identify constraints in developing the marketing pattern of rubber in partnership. The study was conducted on 12 processing and marketing units (PMU) of rubber material which were divided into 6 each applying partnership marketing patterns and 6 non partnerships, 9 crumb rubber factories consisting of 3 partnerships, the rest not implementing partnerships. 180 sample farmers who each applied partnerships and 90 did not implement partnerships. The method of research is in depth study by observing and interviewing to exploring the variety of reasons join or not in certain marketing pattern, advantage and disadvantage the farmers’ decisions in form of marketing institution, which is partnership and non partnership. Data analyzed by using quantitative and qualitative descriptively method. The research result indicated that crumb rubber factories’ reasons had not cooperated with in partnership pattern are (1) the difficulty in determining of the rubber material price, (2) the uncertained supply of farmer’s rubber for factory, (3) the supply is often fulfilled by traditional marketing institution, the farmers is often not hold the agreement especially during the session of low rubber price, however the factory still give guidance and help the farmers as partnership member. This research result indicates that some farmer’s reasons which had not cooperated with in partnership pattern are (1) it is the lower rubber material price by factories than by middlemen, (2) PMUs is not active any more, (3) the farmers have illegal agreement in form of credit and paid by selling their product to the middlemen, (4) the payment duration of the farmer’s product in auction system is too long according to the farmers and (5) the farmers often could not fulfilled selling quote of rubber material as determined in contract. The partnership members in this cooperation should discuss any problems to get good solution. The government sould always support and facilitate the commitment of partnership between the farmers and the crumb rubber factories to increase their performance in rubber marketing and to reduce any intervention from the outer institution (such as local marketing institution).

The objective of the research was to compare rice farmers’ income and capital creation base on a different source of rice farming financing. The study population comprised 180 farmers, 105 of which represented the own funding farmers and the rest were loan funding farmers. These were interviewed to record the rice farming behavior with a different financial source in the sixth bigger rice production in Indonesia, namely South Sumatera Province. Rice farming analysis and continued t-test was used to analyze for different production and income. Research results showed that rice productivity of own funding rice’s farmers was 29% greater than farmers on loan funding farmers. On the other hand, producing cost of own funding farmers 26% was lower than loan funding farmers. This condition causes the income of own funding rice’s farmers per hectare 56% was greater than the income of loan funding farmers. Moreover, with the family spending were not too different, capital creation of own funding farmers was greater than loan funding farmers. Almost half of the farmers have a medium level of capital creation capability, the remaining one third was more classified as high capital creation and one-eighth was classified as low. To reduce rice farming cost of loan funding farmers are savings of labor costs by supervising their labor and finding sources of loans with the lowest loan interest rates.

Introduction The Vipera berus (common viper) is the only species of venomous snake found in Poland. The aim of this study was to determine to what extent coagulopathy has occurred as a post-bite complication. Material and methods The medical records of 138 adult patients in the Sucha Beskidzka hospital with the diagnosis of snake bite between 2001–2014 were retrospectively analyzed. Demographic, clinical and laboratory data were collected. Antivenom was given to all patients, except one, with snake bites, but laboratory test were taken prior to administration of antivenom. Obtained results were compared to those of the control group, composed of 176 adults hospitalized in the same period for an elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Results The mean platelet count in the study group was 239.94×109/L (SD=56.56) and 248.77×109/L (SD=57.82) in the control group. In 98% of the study group and 100% of the control group the platelet value (PLT) fell within laboratory norms (130 to 420×109/L), 2 patients after snake bites had a PLT lower than normal, and thrombocytosis was not observed in either group. A reference range of 0.85–1.3 INR below normal was found in 2 patients in the study group and 15 from the control group, while values above the normal range were found in 8 patients (6.7%) from the snake bite group and no patients from the control group. In the study group, the INR ranged from 0.78–1.43 with a mean of 1.046 (SD=0.14), while in the control group the range was from 0.79–1.28, with a mean of 0.95 (SD=0.08). There was a significant difference in INR between the study and control groups (p

Condensed Matter - Statistical Mechanics - Abstract
A two parameter model for single lane car-following is introduced and its equilibrium and non-equilibrium properties are studied. Despite its simplicity, this model exhibits a rich phenomenology, analogous to that observed in real traffic, like transitions between different dynamical regimes and hysteresis in the fundamental flux-density diagram. We show that traffic jams can spontaneously appear in clustered-like structures. In the jammed phase, we observe a slow relaxation phenomenon ruled by the outgoing car flux that determines the hysteretic dependence of the fundamental flux-density diagram. Coexisting phase regimes are also evidenced so as propagating or stationary density waves. The model can be easily calibrated to reproduce experimental observations., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, latex file and 7 postscript files for figures

droplets ,Von Karman swirling flow ,[SPI.FLUID]Engineering Sciences [physics]/Reactive fluid environment ,microgravity - Abstract
International audience; The temporal and spatial evolution of dispersed media is a fundamental problem in a widerange of physicochemical systems, such as emulsions, suspensions or aerosols. These systems are multiphasic and involve compounds of different densities. They are therefore subject to the influence of gravity which determines the sedimentation rate of their dispersed phase. This effect can be dominant and prevent a detailed study of the phenomena occurring between the constituents themselves, such as the coalescence of drops in emulsions, the evaporation of droplets or the flocculation in suspensions. In this context, the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) has recently supported the development of a new instrument to produce populations of droplets, a few micrometers in radius, under controlled conditions with the objective of allowing a detailed study of their properties in microgravity conditions. The principle of this instrument is to generate, by a fast compression/expansion of air, populations of water droplets and to track their evolution by optical scanning tomography in transmission mode within a volume of approximately 2 mm3. Parabolic flight experiments have shown the possibility to generate and accurately follow the evolution of populations of several hundred droplets for more than 20 seconds. The first experimental results show that it is possible to study their evaporation kinetics or their motion when imposing Von Karman swirling flows to air. This work is part of the AEROSOL project of DECLIC-EVO supported by CNES and aims to help the understanding of cloud microphysics which remains a critical open problem in the context of global warming.

- Abstract
Critical COVID-19 is caused by immune-mediated inflammatory lung injury. Host genetic variation influences the development of illness requiring critical care1 or hospitalization2–4 after infection with SARS-CoV-2. The GenOMICC (Genetics of Mortality in Critical Care) study enables the comparison of genomes from individuals who are critically ill with those of population controls to find underlying disease mechanisms. Here we use whole-genome sequencing in 7,491 critically ill individuals compared with 48,400 controls to discover and replicate 23 independent variants that significantly predispose to critical COVID-19. We identify 16 new independent associations, including variants within genes that are involved in interferon signalling (IL10RB and PLSCR1), leucocyte differentiation (BCL11A) and blood-type antigen secretor status (FUT2). Using transcriptome-wide association and colocalization to infer the effect of gene expression on disease severity, we find evidence that implicates multiple genes—including reduced expression of a membrane flippase (ATP11A), and increased expression of a mucin (MUC1)—in critical disease. Mendelian randomization provides evidence in support of causal roles for myeloid cell adhesion molecules (SELE, ICAM5 and CD209) and the coagulation factor F8, all of which are potentially druggable targets. Our results are broadly consistent with a multi-component model of COVID-19 pathophysiology, in which at least two distinct mechanisms can predispose to life-threatening disease: failure to control viral replication; or an enhanced tendency towards pulmonary inflammation and intravascular coagulation. We show that comparison between cases of critical illness and population controls is highly efficient for the detection of therapeutically relevant mechanisms of disease.
