On 19 September 2020, the Coordination Committee of SISMIKO, one of the Emergency Operational Groups (GO) of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (In italian: Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, INGV), met to evaluate an intervention by the mobile seismic network in Eastern Sicily. In the previous days some seismic events, located near the municipalities of Salemi, Vita and Gibellina in the province of Trapani, were troubling the localadministrations. The Head of Civil Protection of the Sicily Region therefore asked the president of the INGV for an assessment of the intensification of the seismic monitoring of the area. At the time of the convocation of the Coordination Commitee there were about 10 events of magnitude M, between 1.3 and 3.5 M; four of these earthquakes had been felt by the population. After the meeting, the decision has been taken to activate SISMIKO and to install a temporary network made up of 4 seismic stations. The data of the stations, transmitted in real time to the INGV acquisition centers of Catania (Osservatorio Etneo, OE) and Rome (Osservatorio Nazionale Terremoti, ONT), were integrated into the system to contribute to the national seismic surveillance services that are carried out at the ONT Operations Room. This work describes the main activities carried out by SISMIKO, starting from the convening of the Coordination Committee to the uninstallation of the infrastructure., Nel pomeriggio del 19 settembre 2020 si è riunito li Comitato di Coordinamento di SISMIKO, uno dei Gruppi Operativi (GO) di emergenza dell'Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), per valutare un possibile intervento della rete sismica mobile in Sicilia occidentale. Nei giorni precedenti, alcuni eventi sismici localizzati tra gli abitati di Salemi, Vita e Gibellina (in provincia di Trapani) avevano creato preoccupazione alle Amministrazioni locali, con conseguente richiesta all'INGV da parte del Responsabile della Protezione Civile della Regione Sicilia di valutare una eventuale intensificazione del monitoraggio sismico dell'area. Al m o m e n t della convocazione del Comitato di Coordinamento si contavano circa 10 eventi di magnitudo locale (M,) compresa tra 1.3 e 3.5, di cui quattro con M, > 3.0 avvertiti dalla popolazione. A seguito dell'incontro è stato predisposto l'intervento di SISMIKO: esso si è concretizzato nell'installazione di una rete temporanea costituita da 4 stazioni sismiche, i cui dati trasmessi in tempo reale ai centri di acquisizione dell'INGV di Catania (Osservatorio Etneo - OE) e Roma (Osservatorio Nazionale Terremoti - ONT) sono stati integrati nel sistema che garantisce al sorveglianza sismica nazionale con li servizio H24 svolto presso la Sala Operativa dell'ONT. I presente lavoro descrive le attività principali svolte da SISMIKO nelle sue varie fasi: dalla convocazione del Comitato di Coordinamento fino alla disinstallazione della infrastruttura.

During May 2022, a short-lived seismic swarm affected a small area of the Chianti fiorentino region about 15 km south of Florence. The two strongest earthquakes of the swarm reached MW 3.7; nonetheless, they were distinctly felt up to distances of several tens of kilometers, causing residents’ concern. Moreover, the presence of a huge artistic heritage in the surrounding areas raises questions about its vulnerability to even minor ground shaking. In order to improve knowledge of the location and size of active seismogenic structures in the vicinity of Florence, the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) responded promptly through the SISMIKO emergency group. On the 4th of May, the day after the beginning of the sequence, five mobile seismic stations were installed at close range from the epicentral area and integrated into the INGV permanent monitoring system. This report describes the procedures related to: (i) deployment, maintenance and dismission of the mobile network; (ii) management and quality control of the acquired data. Finally, in the frame of the seismo-tectonic context of the area, we present a preliminary overview about the spatial features and temporal evolution of the swarm which had a slight resumption in August 2022, with a magnitude 2.7 event and its aftershocks., Nel mese di maggio 2022 è iniziato uno sciame sismico, di breve durata, che ha interessato una piccola area del Chianti fiorentino a circa 15 km a sud dalla città di Firenze. I due terremoti più energetici hanno avuto una magnitudo momento pari a 3.7; nonostante la magnitudo modesta, tali eventi sono stati avvertiti distintamente fino a distanze di diverse decine di chilometri, e hanno destato preoccupazione nella popolazione prossima all’area epicentrale. Inoltre, dato l’ingente patrimonio artistico presente nel capoluogo toscano, questo episodio ha sollevato interrogativi sulla sua vulnerabilità anche a scuotimenti del suolo di piccola entità. Al fine di migliorare le conoscenze sulla ubicazione e le dimensioni delle strutture sismogenetiche attive in prossimità di Firenze, l’Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) è intervenuto nell’area interessata dallo sciame attraverso il Gruppo Operativo (GO) di emergenza SISMIKO. Il 4 maggio, giorno successivo all’inizio dello sciame, cinque stazioni sismiche mobili sono state installate a distanza ravvicinata dall’area epicentrale, e integrate nel sistema di monitoraggio permanente INGV. Questo lavoro descrive le procedure relative a: (i) l’installazione, la manutenzione e la disinstallazione della rete sismica mobile; (ii) la gestione e il controllo di qualità dei dati acquisiti. Infine, vengono presentate, in riferimento al contesto sismotettonico dell’area, le caratteristiche spaziali e l’evoluzione temporale dello sciame, che ha presentato una piccola ripresa nell’attività sismica ad agosto del 2022, con un terremoto di magnitudo locale 2.7 e successive repliche.

SISMIKO is the operational task force at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia aiming at the rapid deployment of temporary seismic stations in the area hit by a significant earthquake or a seismic sequence causing concern and interest with impact on people. Decreasing the average distance between the seismic stations improves network detection, accuracy of the earthquake locations, shakemaps and strong motion parameters.The data acquired by SISMIKO are available, without any constraints, to the entire scientific community through the EIDA portal Italy node, which assures a high level of data quality.A national diffusion of the preconfigured seismic stations in different headquarters and a ready acquisition system, guarantee rapid response after an earthquake and allow the immediate acquisition of the data as soon as each seismic station is installed. An international FDSN network code is registered in advance and a five char codification for the station names is applied to request the ISC station codes (T).The last emergency (no. 17) in 2022 was caused by an earthquake of Mw 5.5 in the Costa Marchigiana region, where we installed eight stations of the Y1 network the same day as the mainshock (DOI: 10.13127/SD/TBLKBA-3U6).We present the organization and the objectives of the SISMIKO operational group and the analysis of the dataset of the latest seismic sequence carried out by the seismic surveillance service, the Italian Seismic Bulletin (BSI) and SISMIKO., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

The present work is part of the 2015 ART-IT project (Early Earthquake Alert in Italy). Its main purpose is the estimation of the PRESTo system [PRobabilistic and Evolutionary early warning SysTem, Iannaccone et al., 2010; Satriano et al., 2011] performance through an ad hoc calibration of the software configuration parameters using only the accelerometric networks installed in an area of Central Italy, selected as test site. The correct operation of an early warning system could be used for a more correct and effective management of a seismic emergency from the first seconds after the occurrence of a strong earthquake, allowing to adopt sudden actions to reduce the exposure and, consequently, the seismic risk. To evaluate the performance of the software, it is necessary to carry out an a priori calibration phase of the configuration parameters in order to guarantee the best performance in terms of seismic event detection and reliability in the estimation of hypocentral parameters. The tests were carried out by means of a series of recorded waveforms simulations considering a selected catalogue of earthquakes with a magnitude range between 3.9 and 5.4, occurred in the Amatrice-Norcia area, with a magnitude range between 3.9 and 5.4, occurred in the Amatrice-Norcia area, with particular focus on the seismic sequence of January 2017., Il presente lavoro si inquadra nell’ambito del progetto premiale 2015 ART-IT (Allerta Rapida Terremoti in Italia) e si prefigge come scopo principale la verifica delle performance del sistema PRESTo [PRobabilistic and Evolutionary early warning SysTem, Iannaccone et al., 2010; Satriano et al., 2011] tramite una calibrazione ad hoc dei parametri di configurazione del software, considerando le sole stazioni accelerometriche installate in un’area del Centro Italia, scelta come area test. Il corretto funzionamento di un sistema di early warning sismico rappresenta un importante contributo ad una più efficace gestione in caso di emergenza sismica sin dai primi secondi dopo l’accadimento del terremoto, consentendo di adottare azioni repentine di riduzione dell’esposizione e quindi del rischio sismico. Per valutare le prestazioni del software è stata necessaria una fase preliminare di calibrazione dei parametri di configurazione al fine di garantire le migliori prestazioni, in termini di detezione degli eventi sismici ed affidabilità nella stima dei parametri ipocentrali. I test sono stati realizzati effettuando una serie di simulazioni a partire dalle forme d’onda registrate relative ad un catalogo selezionato di terremoti, con range di magnitudo compresa tra 3.9 e 5.4, verificatisi tra Amatrice e Norcia, con particolare riferimento alla sequenza del Gennaio 2017.

SISMIKO is one of the emergency operating groups (GO) of Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) whose principal task is the prompt installation a temporary seismic network, with real time data transmission, to integrate the permanent seismic stations in an area where a strong earthquake or a seismic sequence is occurring [Moretti et al., 2012; 2016]. SISMIKO was formally established in 2015 by the union of some mobile seismic networks managed by different groups of INGV headquarters. Each of these networks was conceived according to different criteria, determined by its geographical locations and its relationships with the Italian Rete Sismica Nazionale (RSN) [Michelini et al., 2016; Margheriti et al., 2020]. These heterogeneities includes also in the data acquisition systems of the stations managed by the GO. Thanks to a careful planning and configuration, today SISMIKO has the capability and the expertise to deploy, in a few hours, seismic stations and integrate their real time data into the acquisition system of the main operating room in Roma. In this way SISMIKO significantly contributes to monitoring and surveillance service carried out by INGV in case of seismic emergencies [Margheriti et al., 2020]. During 2020, following a renewal and homogenization of the GO instrumental inventory started in 2019 (cofinanced in the framework of the ongoing Agreement between INGV and Italian Civil Protection Department), the task of developing a unified real time acquisition system for all the SISMIKO seismic stations was pursued, independently from the geographic location of the single INGV branches. This new approach has several advantages, primarily allowing the full interchange of the operators, among the various INGV branches, in the management of the data acquisition system, which is a critical issue in managing a seismic emergency., SISMIKO è uno dei Gruppi Operativi di emergenza sismica dell’Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) con la principale missione di installare, nel più breve tempo possibile, una rete sismica temporanea in tempo reale ad integrazione di quella permanente nell’area colpita da un forte terremoto e/o da una sequenza sismica [Moretti et al., 2012; 2016]. SISMIKO nasce formalmente nel 2015 ed è il frutto della convergenza di reti sismiche mobili gestite da diversi gruppi all’interno delle singole Sezioni e sedi dell’Ente. Ognuna di queste reti risente della propria storia, risponde ad esigenze territoriali diverse ed è caratterizzata da vari gradi di coinvolgimento nella gestione della Rete Sismica Nazionale (RSN) [Michelini et al., 2016; Margheriti et al., 2020]. Questa eterogeneità si riflette anche in differenze nel sistema di acquisizione dati delle stazioni gestite dal GO. Grazie ad una attenta predisposizione e configurazione della propria strumentazione, oggi SISMIKO ha la possibilità e le competenze per integrare in poche ore una rete temporanea trasmessa in tempo reale nel sistema di acquisizione dati sismologici attivo presso la sede INGV di Roma, contribuendo in maniera significativa al servizio di monitoraggio e sorveglianza sismica del territorio colpito dall’emergenza [Margheriti et al., 2020]. Nel corso del 2020, facendo seguito al piano di rinnovo e omogeneizzazione del parco strumentale dedicato GO avviato nel 2019 (cofinanziato nell’ambito della Convenzione tra INGV e il Dipartimento di Protezione Civile vigente), è stato deciso di sviluppare un sistema di acquisizione dati in tempo reale unificato per tutte le stazioni di SISMIKO, indipendente dalle singole sedi di appartenenza. Questa nuova logica ha diversi vantaggi, e in primis quello di rendere possibile il completo interscambio del personale presso le varie sedi INGV nella gestione dell’acquisizione dati, aspetto fondamentale durante una emergenza.

We present the results of P-to-S receiver function analysis to improve the 3D image of the sedimentary layer, the upper crust, and lower crust in the Pannonian Basin area. The Pannonian Basin hosts deep sedimentary depocentres superimposed on a complex basement structure and it is surrounded by mountain belts. We processed waveforms from 221 three-component broadband seismological stations. As a result of the dense station coverage, we were able to achieve so far unprecedented spatial resolution in determining the velocity structure of the crust. We applied a three-fold quality control process; the first two being applied to the observed waveforms and the third to the calculated radial receiver functions. This work is the first comprehensive receiver function study of the entire region. To prepare the inversions, we performed station-wise H-Vp/Vs grid search, as well as Common Conversion Point migration. Our main focus was then the S-wave velocity structure of the area, which we determined by the Neighborhood Algorithm inversion method at each station, where data were sub-divided into back-azimuthal bundles based on similar Ps delay times. The 1D, nonlinear inversions provided the depth of the discontinuities, shear-wave velocities and Vp/Vs ratios of each layer per bundle, and we calculated uncertainty values for each of these parameters. We then developed a 3D interpolation method based on natural neighbor interpolation to obtain the 3D crustal structure from the local inversion results. We present the sedimentary thickness map, the first Conrad depth map and an improved, detailed Moho map, as well as the first upper and lower crustal thickness maps obtained from receiver function analysis. The velocity jump across the Conrad discontinuity is estimated at less than 0.2 km/s over most of the investigated area. We also compare the new Moho map from our approach to simple grid search results and prior knowledge from other techniques. Our Moho depth map presents local variations in the investigated area: the crust-mantle boundary is at 20–26 km beneath the sedimentary basins, while it is situated deeper below the Apuseni Mountains, Transdanubian and North Hungarian Ranges (28–33 km), and it is the deepest beneath the Eastern Alps and the Southern Carpathians (40–45 km). These values reflect well the Neogene evolution of the region, such as crustal thinning of the Pannonian Basin and orogenic thickening in the neighboring mountain belts. The region around the town Albstadt, SW Germany, was struck by four damaging earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 5 during the last century. These earthquakes occurred along the Albstadt Shear Zone (ASZ), which is characterized by more or less continuous microseismicity. As there are no visible surface ruptures that may be connected to the fault zone, we study its characteristics by its seismicity distribution and faulting pattern. We use the earthquake data of the state earthquake service of Baden-Württemberg from 2011 to 2018 and complement it with additional phase picks beginning in 2016 at the AlpArray and StressTransfer seismic networks in the vicinity of the ASZ. This extended data set is used to determine new minimum 1-D seismic vp and vs velocity models and corresponding station delay times for earthquake relocation. Fault plane solutions are determined for selected events, and the principal stress directions are derived. The minimum 1-D seismic velocity models have a simple and stable layering with increasing velocity with depth in the upper crust. The corresponding station delay times can be explained well by the lateral depth variation of the crystalline basement. The relocated events align about north–south with most of the seismic activity between the towns of Tübingen and Albstadt, east of the 9∘ E meridian. The events can be separated into several subclusters that indicate a segmentation of the ASZ. The majority of the 25 determined fault plane solutions feature an NNE–SSW strike but NNW–SSE-striking fault planes are also observed. The main fault plane associated with the ASZ dips steeply, and the rake indicates mainly sinistral strike-slip, but we also find minor components of normal and reverse faulting. The determined direction of the maximum horizontal stress of 140–149∘ is in good agreement with prior studies. Down to ca. 7–8 km depth SHmax is bigger than SV; below this depth, SV is the main stress component. The direction of SHmax indicates that the stress field in the area of the ASZ is mainly generated by the regional plate driving forces and the Alpine topography.

The recent development of ambient noise tomography, in combination with the increasing number of permanent seismic stations and dense networks of temporary stations operated during passive seismic experiments, provides a unique opportunity to build the first high-resolution 3-D shear wave velocity (vS) model of the entire crust of the Bohemian Massif (BM). This paper provides a regional-scale model of velocity distribution in the BM crust. The velocity model with a cell size of 22 km is built using a conventional two-step inversion approach from Rayleigh wave group velocity dispersion curves measured at more than 400 stations. The shear velocities within the upper crust of the BM are ∼0.2 km s−1 higher than those in its surroundings. The highest crustal velocities appear in its southern part, the Moldanubian unit. The Cadomian part of the region has a thinner crust, whereas the crust assembled, or tectonically transformed in the Variscan period, is thicker. The sharp Moho discontinuity preserves traces of its dynamic development expressed in remnants of Variscan subductions imprinted in bands of crustal thickening. A significant feature of the presented model is the velocity-drop interface (VDI) modelled in the lower part of the crust. We explain this feature by the anisotropic fabric of the lower crust, which is characterised as vertical transverse isotropy with the low velocity being the symmetry axis. The VDI is often interrupted around the boundaries of the crustal units, usually above locally increased velocities in the lowermost crust. Due to the north-west–south-east shortening of the crust and the late-Variscan strike-slip movements along the north-east–south-west oriented sutures preserved in the BM lithosphere, the anisotropic fabric of the lower crust was partly or fully erased along the boundaries of original microplates. These weakened zones accompanied by a velocity increase above the Moho (which indicate an emplacement of mantle rocks into the lower crust) can represent channels through which portions of subducted and later molten rocks have percolated upwards providing magma to subsequently form granitoid plutons.

We compiled a dataset of continuous recordings from the temporary and permanent seismic networks to compute the high-resolution 3D S-wave velocity model of the Southeastern Alps, the western part of the external Dinarides, and the Friuli and Venetian plains through ambient noise tomography. Part of the dataset is recorded by the SWATH-D temporary network and permanent networks in Italy, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia between October 2017 and July 2018. We computed 4050 vertical component cross-correlations to obtain the empirical Rayleigh wave Green’s functions. The dataset is complemented by adopting 1804 high-quality correlograms from other studies. The fast-marching method for 2D surface wave tomography is applied to the phase velocity dispersion curves in the 2–30 s period band. The resulting local dispersion curves are inverted for 1D S-wave velocity profiles using the non-perturbational and perturbational inversion methods. We assembled the 1D S-wave velocity profiles into a pseudo-3D S-wave velocity model from the surface down to 60 km depth. A range of iso-velocities, representing the crystalline basement depth and the crustal thickness, are determined. We found the average depth over the 2.8–3.0 and 4.1–4.3 km/s iso-velocity ranges to be reasonable representations of the crystalline basement and Moho depths, respectively. The basement depth map shows that the shallower crystalline basement beneath the Schio-Vicenza fault highlights the boundary between the deeper Venetian and Friuli plains to the east and the Po-plain to the west. The estimated Moho depth map displays a thickened crust along the boundary between the Friuli plain and the external Dinarides. It also reveals a N-S narrow corridor of crustal thinning to the east of the junction of Giudicarie and Periadriatic lines, which was not reported by other seismic imaging studies. This corridor of shallower Moho is located beneath the surface outcrop of the Permian magmatic rocks and seems to be connected to the continuation of the Permian magmatism to the deep-seated crust. We compared the shallow crustal velocities and the hypocentral location of the earthquakes in the Southern foothills of the Alps. It revealed that the seismicity mainly occurs in the S-wave velocity range between ∼3.1 and ∼3.6 km/s.

SUMMARYProbing seismic anisotropy of the lithosphere provides valuable clues on the fabric of rocks. We present a 3-D probabilistic model of shear wave velocity and radial anisotropy of the crust and uppermost mantle of Europe, focusing on the mountain belts of the Alps and Apennines. The model is built from Love and Rayleigh dispersion curves in the period range 5–149 s. Data are extracted from seismic ambient noise recorded at 1521 broad-band stations, including the AlpArray network. The dispersion curves are first combined in a linearized least squares inversion to obtain 2-D maps of group velocity at each period. Love and Rayleigh maps are then jointly inverted at depth for shear wave velocity and radial anisotropy using a Bayesian Monte Carlo scheme that accounts for the trade-off between radial anisotropy and horizontal layering. The isotropic part of our model is consistent with previous studies. However, our anisotropy maps differ from previous large scale studies that suggested the presence of significant radial anisotropy everywhere in the European crust and shallow upper mantle. We observe instead that radial anisotropy is mostly localized beneath the Apennines while most of the remaining European crust and shallow upper mantle is isotropic. We attribute this difference to trade-offs between radial anisotropy and thin (hectometric) layering in previous studies based on least-squares inversions and long period data (>30 s). In contrast, our approach involves a massive data set of short period measurements and a Bayesian inversion that accounts for thin layering. The positive radial anisotropy (VSH > VSV) observed in the lower crust of the Apennines cannot result from thin layering. We rather attribute it to ductile horizontal flow in response to the recent and present-day extension in the region.

SUMMARYTo constrain seismic anisotropy under and around the Alps in Europe, we study SKS shear wave splitting from the region densely covered by the AlpArray seismic network. We apply a technique based on measuring the splitting intensity, constraining well both the fast orientation and the splitting delay. Four years of teleseismic earthquake data were processed, from 723 temporary and permanent broad-band stations of the AlpArray deployment including ocean-bottom seismometers, providing a spatial coverage that is unprecedented. The technique is applied automatically (without human intervention), and it thus provides a reproducible image of anisotropic structure in and around the Alpine region. As in earlier studies, we observe a coherent rotation of fast axes in the western part of the Alpine chain, and a region of homogeneous fast orientation in the Central Alps. The spatial variation of splitting delay times is particularly interesting though. On one hand, there is a clear positive correlation with Alpine topography, suggesting that part of the seismic anisotropy (deformation) is caused by the Alpine orogeny. On the other hand, anisotropic strength around the mountain chain shows a distinct contrast between the Western and Eastern Alps. This difference is best explained by the more active mantle flow around the Western Alps. The new observational constraints, especially the splitting delay, provide new information on Alpine geodynamics.

La multidisciplinarietà della ricerca e la multiparametricità delle misure sono due elementi che in questi ultimi tempi hanno suscitato l’interesse e reso disponibili risorse dalle principali Agenzie internazionali che finanziano la ricerca scientifica nel campo delle Scienze della Terra. Le maggiori iniziative internazionali atte all’analisi dell’effetto dei molteplici e complessi fenomeni geofisici che regolano le dinamiche terrestri e il loro impatto sull’ambiente e sulla società hanno indirizzato le proprie risorse al potenziamento delle infrastrutture di osservazione, per coadiuvare sia gli studi teorici che quelli sperimentali. In tale ambito si colloca il presente progetto “S.O.I.R. monitoraggio futuro”, articolato in molteplici task, ed in particolare il WP2 relativo al potenziamento dell’infrastruttura della Rete Sismica Nazionale (RSN [Michelini et al., 2016]). Partendo nella maggior parte dei casi da siti già esistenti, attraverso l’integrazione di sensori velocimetrici, accelerometrici, geodetici e geochimici, si è voluto acquisire contemporaneamente e per lo stesso luogo il maggior numero di variabili geofisiche, realizzando così le basi per una rete sismica multiparametrica [Rao et al., 2018]. Nelle aree vulcaniche, viste le loro peculiarità e complessità dei fenomeni geofisici in gioco, si sono aggiunte rispetto ad altri siti, delle variabili, come le tiltmetriche ad esempio, in grado di fornire un quadro il più possibile completo del fenomeno osservato e da studiare [Di Prima et al., 2020; Orazi et al., 2020]. Altro aspetto preso in considerazione è stato migliorare l’affidabilità del dato, attraverso l’introduzione di sistemi di back-up dell’alimentazione in sito e l’adozione di apparati di trasmissione in grado di gestire un collegamento ridondato verso il centro di acquisizione della sede di Roma o di altre sezioni dell’Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV). Hanno preso parte al progetto gruppi trasversali alle diverse sezioni dell’INGV, ognuno secondo il suo campo di competenza. L’Osservatorio Nazionale Terremoti (ONT) si è concentrato sul completamento di alcune stazioni in Italia centrale con la componente accelerometrica, sulla ridondanza di trasmissione del dato [Farroni et al., 2020a], sul backup dei sistemi di alimentazione e sull’installazione di alcune stazioni multiparametriche in Sicilia in zone non vulcaniche [Rao et al., 2020]. L’Osservatorio Etneo (OE) e l’Osservatorio Vesuviano (OV) hanno operato nelle aree vulcaniche campane e siciliane di loro competenza (maggiori dettagli in [Di Prima et al., 2020; Orazi et al., 2020]). La Sezione di Roma 1 ha collaborato trasversalmente fornendo ai tre osservatori la strumentazione geochimica [Cannelli et al., 2020] e ha tenuto una stretta collaborazione con l’ONT per la realizzazione tecnica di nuovi apparati geochimici in grado di connettersi sulla rete ethernet, con la finalità di condividere i medesimi vettori di comunicazione impiegati dalle altre tipologie di acquisitori [Farroni et al., 2020a].

Nell’ambito del progetto “S.O.I.R. monitoraggio futuro”, la sezione INGV dell’Osservatorio Nazionale Terremoti (ONT), ha rivolto l’attenzione principalmente nel centro Italia e nelle aree non vulcaniche della Sicilia. La scelta di convogliare le attività di potenziamento in queste due aree è stata attentamente ponderata: da un lato la necessità di ottimizzare e irrobustire la rete di monitoraggio in centro Italia, un’area ad elevatissimo rischio interessata negli ultimi anni da importanti sequenze sismiche, dall’altro quello di avviare lo sviluppo della rete multiparametrica in Sicilia, un territorio che offre una innumerevole varietà di ambienti e sotto-sistemi, che rendono tale regione un laboratorio naturale unico al mondo. Gli interventi ONT possono essere essenzialmente raggruppati in due categorie: quelli finalizzati all’aumento del grado di multiparametricità del sito e quelli mirati all’aumento del livello di affidabilità e robustezza del servizio. La presenza simultanea di molteplici sensori permette infatti di migliorare la comprensione del fenomeno sismico e dei fenomeni ad esso associati, di aprire nuove prospettive per la valutazione della pericolosità sismica, per la previsione probabilistica dei terremoti, per la prevenzione e l’aumento di resilienza, e più in generale per la mitigazione del rischio sismico. Mentre sistemi di back-up dell’alimentazione e la ridondanza di trasmissione, garantiscono una maggiore continuità soprattutto per le stazioni considerate strategiche per il servizio di monitoraggio e di sorveglianza sismica.

Ruolo fondamentale delle stazioni accelerometriche è la registrazione di dati di qualità utilizzati per il calcolo dei principali parametri di scuotimento considerati nell’ambito della sismologia applicata all’ingegneria. In caso di terremoti da moderati a forti, l’immediata disponibilità di dati accelerometrici di qualità è inoltre rilevante per ovviare gli eventuali effetti di saturazione alle stazioni velocimetriche, consentendo di effettuare molte analisi sismologiche fondamentali per il calcolo della magnitudo, il tensore momento sismico e la localizzazione del terremoto utilizzando anche i tempi di arrivo della fase S. Il principale obiettivo di questo lavoro è la messa a punto di metodologie automatiche per l’individuazione di cause epistemiche nel malfunzionamento delle stazioni accelerometriche della Rete Sismica Nazionale (RSN) [Michelini et al., 2016], di fornire un dato grezzo analizzato in automatico in grado di garantire fin dai primi minuti dopo l’evento un quadro generale dello scuotimento affidabile, oltre che rendere disponibile agli operatori della Sala Operativa dell’Osservatorio Nazionale Terremoti (ONT) una serie di informazioni dedicate alla qualità del dato contenute in pagine web riservate denominate ISMDqc (quality check) all’interno del portale accelerometrico ISMD [Massa et al., 2014].

In this study, we analyzed a large seismological dataset from temporary and permanent networks in the southern and eastern Alps to establish high-precision hypocenters and 1-D VP and VP/VS models. The waveform data of a subset of local earthquakes with magnitudes in the range of 1–4.2 ML were recorded by the dense, temporary SWATH-D network and selected stations of the AlpArray network between September 2017 and the end of 2018. The first arrival times of P and S waves of earthquakes are determined by a semi-automatic procedure. We applied a Markov chain Monte Carlo inversion method to simultaneously calculate robust hypocenters, a 1-D velocity model, and station corrections without prior assumptions, such as initial velocity models or earthquake locations. A further advantage of this method is the derivation of the model parameter uncertainties and noise levels of the data. The precision estimates of the localization procedure is checked by inverting a synthetic travel time dataset from a complex 3-D velocity model and by using the real stations and earthquakes geometry. The location accuracy is further investigated by a quarry blast test. The average uncertainties of the locations of the earthquakes are below 500 m in their epicenter and ∼ 1.7 km in depth. The earthquake distribution reveals seismicity in the upper crust (0–20 km), which is characterized by pronounced clusters along the Alpine frontal thrust, e.g., the Friuli-Venetia (FV) region, the Giudicarie–Lessini (GL) and Schio-Vicenza domains, the Austroalpine nappes, and the Inntal area. Some seismicity also occurs along the Periadriatic Fault. The general pattern of seismicity reflects head-on convergence of the Adriatic indenter with the Alpine orogenic crust. The seismicity in the FV and GL regions is deeper than the modeled frontal thrusts, which we interpret as indication for southward propagation of the southern Alpine deformation front (blind thrusts).

International audience; The dense AlpArray network allows studying seismic wave propagation with high spatial resolution. Here we introduce an array approach to measure arrival angles of teleseismic Rayleigh waves. The approach combines the advantages of phase correlation as in the two-station method with array beamforming to obtain the phase-velocity vector. 20 earthquakes from the first two years of the AlpArray project are selected, and spatial patterns of arrival-angle deviations across the AlpArray are shown in maps, depending on period and earthquake location. The cause of these intriguing spatial patterns is discussed. A simple wave-propagation modelling example using an isolated anomaly and a Gaussian beam solution suggests that much of the complexity can be explained as a result of wave interference after passing a structural anomaly along the wave paths. This indicates that arrival-angle information constitutes useful additional information on the Earth structure, beyond what is currently used in inversions.

Highlights • Rayleigh-wave phase velocity in the wider Dinarides region using the two-station method. • Uppermost mantle shear-wave velocity model of the Dinarides-Adriatic Sea region. • Velocity model reveals a robust high-velocity anomaly present under the whole Dinarides. • High-velocity anomaly reaches depth of 160 km in the northern Dinarides to more than 200 km under southern Dinarides. • New structural model incorporating delamination as one of the processes controlling the continental collision in the Dinarides. The interaction between the Adriatic microplate (Adria) and Eurasia is the main driving factor in the central Mediterranean tectonics. Their interplay has shaped the geodynamics of the whole region and formed several mountain belts including Alps, Dinarides and Apennines. Among these, Dinarides are the least investigated and little is known about the underlying geodynamic processes. There are numerous open questions about the current state of interaction between Adria and Eurasia under the Dinaric domain. One of the most interesting is the nature of lithospheric underthrusting of Adriatic plate, e.g. length of the slab or varying slab disposition along the orogen. Previous investigations have found a low-velocity zone in the uppermost mantle under the northern-central Dinarides which was interpreted as a slab gap. Conversely, several newer studies have indicated the presence of the continuous slab under the Dinarides with no trace of the low velocity zone. Thus, to investigate the Dinaric mantle structure further, we use regional-to-teleseismic surface-wave records from 98 seismic stations in the wider Dinarides region to create a 3D shear-wave velocity model. More precisely, a two-station method is used to extract Rayleigh-wave phase velocity while tomography and 1D inversion of the phase velocity are employed to map the depth dependent shear-wave velocity. Resulting velocity model reveals a robust high-velocity anomaly present under the whole Dinarides, reaching the depths of 160 km in the north to more than 200 km under southern Dinarides. These results do not agree with most of the previous investigations and show continuous underthrusting of the Adriatic lithosphere under Europe along the whole Dinaric region. The geometry of the down-going slab varies from the deeper slab in the north and south to the shallower underthrusting in the center. On-top of both north and south slabs there is a low-velocity wedge indicating lithospheric delamination which could explain the 200 km deep high-velocity body existing under the southern Dinarides.

Il 16 agosto 2018 alle ore 18:19:04 UTC un terremoto di magnitudo ML5.2 (Mw 5.1) è stato ben risentito in un’ampia area che comprende molte regioni del Centro Sud Italia [http://cnt.rm.ingv.it/event/20375681]. I sismologi, in turno presso la sala di monitoraggio e sorveglianza sismica dell’Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), hanno localizzato l’evento in provincia di Campobasso, a 4 km a Sud-Est di Montecilfone. Nella stessa area si era verificato due giorni prima, il 14 agosto alle ore 21.48 UTC un terremoto di Mw 4.6 [http://cnt.rm.ingv.it/event/20362671]. A seguito dell’evento di magnitudo Mw 5.1 e della sequenza ad esso associata, come avviene in questi casi, si è attivato il Gruppo Operativo SISMIKO [Morettiet al., 2012; 2016; Pondrelliet al.,2016] per l’installazione di stazioni sismiche temporanee ad integrazione di quelle permanenti della Rete Sismica Nazionale (RSN[Micheliniet al., 2016; http://cnt.rm.ingv.it/instruments/network/IV])presenti nella regione. On 16 August 2018 at 18:19:04 UTC an earthquake of magnitude ML5.2 (Mw 5.1) was well felt in a large area of central and southern Italy [http://cnt.rm.ingv.it/en/event/20375681]. The seismologists, on duty in the monitoring and surveillance seismic room of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), located the event in the province of Campobasso, 4 km SE of the town of Montecilfone. In the same area, two days before, on August 14 at 21.48 UTC occurred an earthquake of Mw 4.6 [http://cnt.rm.ingv.it/en/event/20362671]. Following the Mw 5.1 magnitude event and the associated sequence, as usual, the SISMIKO Operational Group activated [Moretti et al., 2012; 2016; Pondrelli et al., 2016] to install temporary seismic stations to supplement the permanent ones of the National Seismic Network (in Italian: Rete Sismica Nazionale - RSN [Michelini et al., 2016; http://cnt.rm.ingv.it/en/instruments/network/IV]) present in the region. &nbsp

Within the framework of the European collaborative research initiative AlpArray (http://www.alparray.ethz.ch), the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanolgia (INGV) deployed overall 20 broad-band seismic stations in Northern Italy and on two islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Capraia and Montecristo) during Fall-Winter 2015. The temporary deployment (16 stations) will run for two to three years and 4 INGV National Seismic Network accelerometric sites are now equipped with additional permanent broad-band sensors. The 16 temporary stations are equipped with REF TEK 130 digitizers and Nanometrics Trillium Compact 120 s sensors, a couple have Nanometrics Trillium 120P sensors and one a Streckeisen STS2. For each site we describe the settings and discuss the noise levels, the site effects and the preliminary sensitivity analysis.

The AlpArray programme is a multinational, European consortium to advance our understanding of orogenesis and its relationship to mantle dynamics, plate reorganizations, surface processes and seismic hazard in the Alps–Apennines–Carpathians–Dinarides orogenic system. The AlpArray Seismic Network has been deployed with contributions from 36 institutions from 11 countries to map physical properties of the lithosphere and asthenosphere in 3D and thus to obtain new, high-resolution geophysical images of structures from the surface down to the base of the mantle transition zone. With over 600 broadband stations operated for 2 years, this seismic experiment is one of the largest simultaneously operated seismological networks in the academic domain, employing hexagonal coverage with station spacing at less than 52 km. This dense and regularly spaced experiment is made possible by the coordinated coeval deployment of temporary stations from numerous national pools, including ocean-bottom seismometers, which were funded by different national agencies. They combine with permanent networks, which also required the cooperation of many different operators. Together these stations ultimately fill coverage gaps. Following a short overview of previous large-scale seismological experiments in the Alpine region, we here present the goals, construction, deployment, characteristics and data management of the AlpArray Seismic Network, which will provide data that is expected to be unprecedented in quality to image the complex Alpine mountains at depth., Surveys in Geophysics, 39 (5), ISSN:0169-3298, ISSN:1573-0956

International audience; We present a new 3-D shear-velocity model for the top 30 km of the crust in the wider Vienna Basin region based on surface waves extracted from ambient-noise cross-correlations. We use continuous seismic records of 63 broad-band stations of the AlpArray project to retrieve interstation Green's functions from ambient-noise cross-correlations in the period range from 5 to 25 s. From these Green's functions, we measure Rayleigh group traveltimes, utilizing all four components of the cross-correlation tensor, which are associated with Rayleigh waves (ZZ, RR, RZ and ZR), to exploit multiple measurements per station pair. A set of selection criteria is applied to ensure that we use high-quality recordings of fundamental Rayleigh modes. We regionalize the interstation group velocities in a 5 km × 5 km grid with an average path density of ∼20 paths per cell. From the resulting group-velocity maps, we extract local 1-D dispersion curves for each cell and invert all cells independently to retrieve the crustal shear-velocity structure of the study area. The resulting model provides a previously unachieved lateral resolution of seismic velocities in the region of ∼15 km. As major features, we image the Vienna Basin and Little Hungarian Plain as low-velocity anomalies, and the Bohemian Massif with high velocities. The edges of these features are marked with prominent velocity contrasts correlated with faults, such as the Alpine Front and Vienna Basin transfer fault system. The observed structures correlate well with surface geology, gravitational anomalies and the few known crystalline basement depths from boreholes. For depths larger than those reached by boreholes, the new model allows new insight into the complex structure of the Vienna Basin and surrounding areas, including deep low-velocity zones, which we image with previously unachieved detail. This model may be used in the future to interpret the deeper structures and tectonic evolution of the wider Vienna Basin region, evaluate natural resources, model wave propagation and improve earthquake locations, among others.

SISMIKO è una task force operativa che prevede il coordinamento a livello nazionale delle Reti Sismiche Mobili di Pronto Intervento dell’Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) [Moretti et al., 2012; 2016; Pondrelli et al., 2016] e coinvolge le diverse Sezioni INGV che si occupano normalmente del monitoraggio sismico del territorio nazionale. La notte del 24 agosto 2016, a poche ore dal forte terremoto di magnitudo 6.0 che ha interessato il vasto settore del centro Italia, al confine tra l’Umbria, il Lazio, l’Abruzzo e le Marche [Gruppo di Lavoro INGV sul terremoto di Amatrice, 2016a; 2016b], SISMIKO, come gli altri gruppi operativi INGV previsti per la gestione delle emergenze, ovvero EMERGEO, per il rilievo degli effetti geologici cosismici, EMERSITO, per lo studio gli effetti di sito, QUEST per il rilievo macrosismico e IES rivolto alle attività informative per le scuole e la popolazione coinvolta, è stato prontamente convocato per partecipare all’Unità di Crisi INGV e, come previsto nell’ambito della Convenzione vigente fra il Dipartimento di Protezione Civile (DPC) e l’INGV, si è adoperato per l’installazione di stazioni sismiche temporanee ad integrazione della Rete Sismica Nazionale (RSN [Michelini et al., 2016]) presente in area epicentrale [SISMIKO working group, 2016a; Moretti et al., 2016]. La prima geometria della rete sismica temporanea installata da SISMIKO a pochi giorni dall’inizio della sequenza sismica, era costituita da 19 stazioni di cui 14 a 6 componenti (maggiori dettagli in [SISMIKO working group, 2016a; Moretti et al., 2016]). Successivamente, a seguito delle forti scosse che il 26 ottobre e poi il 30 ottobre hanno interessato il settore settentrionale della sequenza, la rete è stata ampliata di circa 25 km verso nord [SISMIKO working group, 2016b] portando a 23 il numero delle stazioni temporanee distribuite in un’area di circa 75 x60 km2. Nei primi giorni del nuovo anno, a causa di avverse condizioni meteo che hanno interessato tutta l’area colpita dal sisma, molte stazioni sismiche, sia permanenti che temporanee, hanno avuto gravi problemi di funzionamento mettendo a dura prova il sistema di monitoraggio della sequenza sismica in atto: numerose sono state le interruzioni della corrente elettrica che hanno influito sulla continuità della trasmissione dei dati, soprattutto nell’area abruzzese. Per diversi giorni è stato considerato imprudente mandare personale in area epicentrale per la manutenzione e il ripristino della strumentazione, considerato che era comunque garantita l’efficienza del servizio di sorveglianza sismica. La mattina del 18 gennaio, 4 nuove scosse di magnitudo superiore a 5.0 sono avvenute nell’estremità meridionale dell’area già attivatasi e quindi, seppur con difficoltà, sono state avviate le procedure per il ripristino del maggior numero di stazioni sismiche possibile. In tale occasione è stata installata una ulteriore stazione nella zona a SW della sequenza, a migliore copertura dell’ultima area colpita, portando a 24 il numero totale di stazioni temporanee installate dal 24 agosto 2016. In queste ultime settimane, il personale del gruppo operativo SISMIKO è stato costantemente impegnato nella cura e nella manutenzione della strumentazione per garantire la continuità dell’acquisizione e della trasmissione dei dati. Alla data di aggiornamento del presente report, è stata decretata, anche in considerazione dell’andamento della sismicità, una rimodulazione della geometria della rete sismica temporanea che avverrà durante la primavera. Tutti i dati acquisiti dalle stazioni temporanee SISMIKO, continuano ad essere disponibili senza alcun vincolo, al pari dei dati della RSN, tramite l’archivio di forme d’onda European Integrated Data Archive (EIDA [Mazza et al., 2012]) e utilizzati per prodotti scientifici in tempo reale (localizzazioni fornite in sala di sorveglianza sismica INGV, calcolo dei Time Domain Moment Tensor, shakeMaps, ecc) e off-line (ri-localizzazioni, ecc).

La rete sismica temporanea installata dal gruppo operativo INGV SISMIKO a seguito del terremoto del 24 agosto 2016 tra i Monti della Laga e la Valnerina, è stata ampliata nel settore settentrionale a seguito dei forti terremoti avvenuti alla fine del mese di ottobre 2016. Successivamente alle due scosse di Mw 5.4 e 5.9 che il 26 ottobre hanno interessato l’area al confine Marche-Umbria tra i Comuni di Castelsantangelo sul Nera (MC), Norcia (PG) e Arquata del Tronto (AP), la geometria della rete è stata estesa di circa 25 km verso nord con l’attivazione di ulteriori tre stazioni temporanee di cui una, da subito, disposta per la trasmissione dei dati in tempo reale e per l’inserimento nel sistema di sorveglianza sismica dell’Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV). Un’ultima stazione è stata inoltre installata nei pressi di Campello del Clitunno in provincia di Perugia ad ovest della sequenza, a seguito del terremoto Mw 6.5 che la mattina del 30 ottobre ha interessato l’intera area già fortemente provata dalla sequenza in corso; questo è stato il più forte terremoto registrato negli ultimi 30 in Italia. A circa 5 mesi dall’inizio dell’emergenza sismica, la rete temporanea conta quindi 23 stazioni che da metà dicembre sono tutte trasmesse in tempo reale ai diversi centri di acquisizione INGV, ovvero Milano, Ancona e Grottaminarda ma soprattutto Roma dove i dati vengono contestualmente archiviati nell’European Integrated Data Archive (EIDA) e integrati nel sistema di monitoraggio e sorveglianza sismica dell’INGV; per la sorveglianza sono incluse solo parte delle stazioni. Nelle ultime settimane, le attività di campagna del gruppo operativo SISMIKO sono state costantemente focalizzate alla cura e alla manutenzione della strumentazione per garantire la continuità della trasmissione e dell’acquisizione dei dati, a volte compromesse da malfunzionamenti legati al maltempo. Alla data di aggiornamento del presente report, non è ancora stata decretata una dismissione o una rimodulazione della geometria della rete sismica temporanea, anche in considerazione della attività sismica in corso a tutt’oggi molto sostenuta. Tutti i dati acquisiti dalle stazioni temporanee SISMIKO, sono distribuiti senza alcun vincolo, al pari dei dati della Rete Sismica Nazionale (RSN, codice di rete IV), ed utilizzati per prodotti scientifici in tempo reale (localizzazioni di sala, calcolo dei Time Domain Moment Tensor -TDMT delle ShakeMaps, ecc) e per l’aggiornamento dei database dell’INGV come l’Italian Seismological Instrumental and Parametric Database (ISIDe) con la revisione del Bollettino Sismico Italiano (BSI), dell’INGV Strong Motion Data (ISMD) e dell’ITalian ACcelerometric Archive (ITACA), dell’European-Mediterranean Regional Centroid Moment Tensors (RCMT) e nei lavori scientifici che utilizzano forme d’onda velocimetriche ed accelerometriche (ri-localizzazioni, studi della sorgente sismica ecc.).

Il 24 agosto 2016, alle 3:36 (ora locale) un terremoto di magnitudo momento (MW) pari a 6.0 ha interessato una porzione significativa dell’Appennino Centrale. Data la magnitudo del mainshock e il livello di danneggiamento riscontrato, l’INGV ha attivato il gruppo operativo Emersito. Lo scopo principale di Emersito è quello di svolgere e coordinare le campagne di monitoraggio per gli effetti di sito imputabili a particolari caratteristiche geologiche e/o geomorfologiche. Il report descrive le attività svolte dal gruppo operativo emersito durante le prime fasi dell’emergenza sismica con particolare riferimento ai criteri di selezione per l’installazione di una rete sismica temporanea nella zona colpita dal terremoto. On August 24, 2016, at 03:36 (local time) a MW6.0 earthquake struck an extensive portion of the Central Apennines. Due to the significant mainshock magnitude and the widespread damaging level of buildings, the Emersito task force has been activated by INGV. The aim of Emersito is to carry out and coordinate monitoring surveys to identify possible local site effects caused by particular geological and geomorphological features. The report describe the main activity of Emersito in the first step of the seismic emergency, that consists on installation and maintaining of a temporary seismic network in the epicentral area.

In the months following the April 6th, 2009, L’Aquila earthquake, several Italian and foreign research institutions installed dozens of seismic stations to monitor more than 100 localities with the aim of studying the local site effects in the epicentral area (upper and middle Aterno valley). The stations (accelerometers and velocimeters) have been deployed inside or very close to the inhabited areas. Among the investigated sites there are Onna, where almost the totality of the buildings collapsed, and the historic centre of L’Aquila, both towns suffering many casualties. The preliminary results for the examined sites show an extreme variability of ground motion and significant amplification for the most damaged localities.

A partire dal luglio 2002 è iniziata la revisione e l’aggiornamento della strumentazione in dotazione alla Sezione di Milano dell’INGV (INGV-MI). Il parco strumenti era principalmente composto da stazioni sismiche MARS88-FD (Floppy Disk): otto di queste sono state inviate in Germania alla ditta costruttrice “Lennartz electronics Gmbh”, per eseguire l’implementazione del sistema di trasmissione dei segnali attraverso un Modem (stazioni MARS88-MC, Modem control). Questa operazione, dai costi contenuti, permette la gestione della strumentazione a distanza; nel presente rapporto verrà descritta una installazione preliminare che ha permesso di sviluppare e testare il sistema di controllo centralizzato, sito nel laboratorio di acquisizione dati di Milano. Verranno inoltre evidenziate le potenzialità del nuovo sistema di acquisizione, sia per i vantaggi che comporta la gestione a distanza delle stazioni sismiche sia per la possibilità di intervenire in tempo reale direttamente dal laboratorio sulle impostazioni dei parametri di configurazione delle stazioni e sugli intervalli di chiamata. Queste operazioni, infatti, sono fondamentali per il buon funzionamento di una rete sismica a scopo di attività di monitoraggio e/o ricerca; l’upgrade dalla versione FD a MC inoltre permette di evitare la mancata acquisizione di segnali causati dalla limitata capacità di memorizzazione delle versioni Floppy Disk.
