Decreased water quality in coastal environments due to land alterations by human activities has caused stressed and degraded coral reefs worldwide. The consequences of decreased water quality are not limited to coral reefs but also affect the quality of people’s lives by increasing the incidence of diseases, so areas highly impacted have been prioritized for management. The Guánica Bay Watershed Management Plan was developed to reduce the non-point sources of pollution that arrive at the bay and to protect adjacent coral reefs, however, 15 years have passed since its creation and management actions have not been evaluated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the management actions implemented in the Guánica Bay watershed. Therefore, the objective of this study was to describe temporal trends (2002–2008 and 2016–2022) of remotely sensed diffuse attenuation coefficient at 490 nm (Kd490), a water quality indicator, in one managed (Guánica Bay) and three non-managed (Guayanilla Bay, Descalabrado River, and Guanajibo River) estuaries in Southwestern Puerto Rico. This was achieved by integrating ocean-color satellite imagery from MERIS-Envisat and OLCI-Sentinel-3 sensors that were sampled using a beyond-Before-After-Control-Impact (beyond-BACI) approach. An additional oceanic site was selected to evaluate continuity between sensors estimates. The imagery was processed using SNAP to extract Kd490 values in the estuaries. The analysis for the beyond-BACI found significant differences between periods (before and after) but the changes were unique to each location within estuary. The lowest Kd490 values and variability within estuary was observed in Guánica (range 0.05–0.1 m-1) and the highest Kd490 values were observed in Guayanilla (0.35 m-1). The southern estuaries showed similar temporal trends, all having a peak in 2018 and a trough in 2020. Kd490 did not decrease in Guánica after the implementation of management actions, which can be related to the passage of several hurricanes during the after period. Further analysis should be done as new data is available and after the implementation of the last management actions suggested in the plan.

BackgroundAfrican ancestry is a known factor associated with the presentation and aggressiveness of prostate cancer (PC). Hispanic/Latino populations exhibit varying degrees of genetic admixture across Latin American countries, leading to diverse levels of African ancestry. However, it remains unclear whether genetic ancestry plays a role in the aggressiveness of PC in Hispanic/Latino patients. We explored the associations between genetic ancestry and the clinicopathological data in Hispanic/Latino PC patients from Colombia.Patients and methodsWe estimated the European, Indigenous and African genetic ancestry, of 230 Colombian patients with localized/regionally advanced PC through a validated panel for genotypification of 106 Ancestry Informative Markers. We examined the associations of the genetic ancestry components with the Gleason Grade Groups (GG) and the clinicopathological characteristics.ResultsNo association was observed between the genetic ancestry with the biochemical recurrence or Gleason GG; however, in a two groups comparison, there were statistically significant differences between GG3 and GG4/GG5 for European ancestry, with a higher mean ancestry proportion in GG4/GG5. A lower risk of being diagnosed at an advanced age was observed for patients with high African ancestry than those with low African ancestry patients (OR: 0.96, CI: 0.92-0.99, p=0.03).ConclusionOur findings revealed an increased risk of presentation of PC at an earlier age in patients with higher African ancestry compared to patients with lower African ancestry in our Hispanic/Latino patients.

En este artículo, usando el montaje como metodología crítica, se argumenta que lo que hace legible de manera transversal la obra literaria de Juan Cárdenas y la obra artística de Carlos Castro es la puesta en cuestión de la máquina realista. Más que contrastar las dos especificidades de la materialidad con que la literatura y el arte contemporáneo colombiano configuran sus obras, lo que esta indagación busca es encontrar instancias de semejanza entre ellas. Mediante la identificación de una serie de procedimientos vinculados a la deformación de las estrategias realistas de representación y a la desestabilización de elementos temporales nuestra hipótesis señala que la literalidad y la duración son efectos de una intervención de los tiempos. Abstract This paper, using montage as a critical methodology, argues that what makes the literary work of Juan Cárdenas and the artistic work of Carlos Castro legible in a transversal manner is the questioning of the realist machine. Rather than contrasting the two specificities of the materiality with which Colombian contemporary literature and art configure their works, what this inquiry seeks is to find instances of similarity between them. By identifying a series of procedures linked to the deformation of realist strategies of representation and the destabilization of temporal elements, our hypothesis points out that literality and duration are effects of an intervention of time. Abstract Background The role of ERG‐status molecular subtyping in prognosis of prostate cancer (PCa) is still under debate. In this study, we identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) according to ERG‐status to explore their enriched pathways and implications in prognosis in Hispanic/Latino PCa patients. Methods RNA from 78 Hispanic PCa tissues from radical prostatectomies (RP) were used for RNA‐sequencing. ERGhigh/ERGlow tumor groups were determined based on the 1.5‐fold change median expression in non‐tumor samples. DEGs with a False Discovery Rate (FDR) 2 were identified between ERGhigh and ERGlow tumors and submitted to enrichment analysis in MetaCore. Survival and association analyses were performed to evaluate biochemical recurrence (BCR)‐free survival. Results The identification of 150 DEGs between ERGhigh and ERGlow tumors revealed clustering of most of the non‐BCR cases (60%) into de ERGhigh group and most of the BCR cases (60.8%) in ERGlow group. Kaplan–Meier survival curves showed a worst BCR‐free survival for ERGlow patients, and a significant reduced risk of BCR was observed for ERGhigh cases (OR = 0.29 (95%CI, 0.10–0.8)). Enrichment pathway analysis identified metabolic‐related pathways, such as the renin‐angiotensin system and angiotensin maturation system, the linoleic acid metabolism, and polyamines metabolism in these ERG groups. Conclusions ERGlow tumor cases were associated with poor BCR‐free survival in our Hispanic/Latino patients, with metabolism‐related pathways altered in the BCR progression. Impact Our findings suggest the need to dissect the role of diet, metabolism, and lifestyle as risk factors for more aggressive PCa subtypes.

American tegumentary leishmaniasis (TL) caused by Leishmania braziliensis is characterized by a spectrum of clinical presentations, ranging from localized cutaneous ulcers (CL), mucosal (ML), or disseminated (DL) disease, to a subclinical (SC) asymptomatic form. Current diagnosis based on parasite culture and/or microscopy lacks sensitivity and specificity. Previous studies showed that patients with CL and ML have very high levels of Leishmania-specific anti-α-Gal antibodies. However, the native parasite α-Gal glycotope(s) is(are) still elusive, thus they have not yet been explored for a more accurate TL diagnosis. Using a chemiluminescent immunoassay, we evaluated the seroreactivity of TL patients across its clinical spectrum, and of endemic (EC) and nonendemic healthy controls (NEC) against three synthetic neoglycoproteins (NGP29b, NGP30b, and NGP28b), respectively comprising the L. major-derived type-2 glycoinositolphospholipid (GIPL)-1 (Galfβ1,3Manα), GIPL-2 (Galα1,3Galfβ1,3Manα), and GIPL-3 (Galα1,6Galα1,3Galfβ) glycotopes. Contrary to NGP29b and NGP30b, NGP28b exhibited high sensitivity and specificity to a CL serum pool. More importantly, NGP28b reacted strongly and specifically with individual sera from distinct clinical forms of TL, especially with SC sera, with 94% sensitivity and 97% specificity, by post-two-graph receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis. Contrary to NGP29b, NGP28b showed low cross-reactivity with Chagas disease and control (NEC/EC) sera. Additionally, seroreactivity of CL patients against NGP28b was significantly decreased after successful chemotherapy, indicating that L. braziliensis-specific anti-α-Gal antibodies may serve as an early biomarker of cure in CL. Our data also points towards the applicability of L. major type-2 GIPL-3-derived Galα1,6Galα1,3Galfβ glycotope for the serological diagnosis of American TL, particularly of the subclinical form.

How extravagant ornamental traits evolve is a key question in evolutionary biology. Bird plumages are among the most elaborate ornaments, displaying almost all colours of the rainbow. Why and how birds evolved to be so colourful remains an open question with multiple and sometimes competing hypotheses. Different colours in different patches (i.e. body parts) might have different functions and thus result from different forms of selection (e.g. natural vs. sexual selection). Here we test the influence of three factors on colour diversity in sunbirds: (1) geographical distance, (2) differences in light environment and (3) phylogenetic distances. We show that both natural and sexual selection affect the evolution of sunbird colouration, but that their extent and direction differs between sexes, and varies with the extent of species overlap and across different patches on the body. Even though overlap in light environment partially explains colour differences among species, no colour metric (brightness, hue or chroma) covaries with light environment. Our results suggest that multiple forms of selection influence the colouration of different colour patches in different ways across an organism's body, highlighting the need to investigate colouration as a network of individual but inter‐connected colour patches. This article presents a study on the power consumption and performance analysis of a small, portable, and ultra-low power total power L-band radiometer. The article explores two processing architectures: the ZYNQ 7010 and the ARM A8 embedded microprocessor. The processing algorithm based in C++ was tested for different clock frequencies, ADC sampling speeds, and sizes of the ADC buffer. To reduce the power consumption and the algorithm execution time, high-level and system-level optimizations, along with fixed-point Q(16,16) data representation, were applied to the main code running on LINUX Debian V8. In the case with the ZYNQ 7010, the optimizations had no notable impact on reducing power or execution time in comparison with the ARM A8, where significant variations were measured, showing a tradeoff between power consumption and algorithm performance that limits the processing capability and the system flight time. The ZYNQ 7010 runs the algorithm faster, but the power consumption is higher than the ARM A8. Using the fixed-point Q(16,16) implementation reduced the power consumption and the execution time in both architectures. Based on these results, we developed a heuristic methodology to minimize power consumption and increase the performance. Energy consumption savings for the radiometer during 20 min of flight was 48%. The size of the radiometer was reduced to 30 cm × 30 cm × 10 cm, with a weight of 1.36 kg, (3 lb) allowing the system be carried by small drones. The results were validated measuring salinity at two locations in Western Puerto Rico.

Anthropogenic marine debris (AMD) is an environmental pollution that affects marine life, human health, wellbeing, and the economy. This marine litter can deposit in the coastlines, particularly on tidal zones and beaches. To pursue future mitigation strategies to reduce AMD is important to monitor the amount, type and frequency of litter being dumped on shores. This study presents the composition, temporal distribution, abundance and size of AMD on three sandy beaches from Guayas province, Ecuador. The field data was recollected from December 2018 to February 2020. A total of 12,362 items of AMD were collected with an abundance of 1.95 macro-litter items/m2. The composition of AMD was marked by the predominance of plastic items (91.8%), followed by wood and cloth (1.9%), while cigarettes were only present in village beaches. Our results suggest that sites with more AMD abundance are beaches nearby small coastal villages and fishing communities. Also, the AMD abundance is slightly higher at the beginning of the dry season than in the rainy season. Our findings indicate that it is necessary to implement concerted solid waste management measures and proactive environmental education programs to empower the local population, as well as investigate the anthropogenic sources and other variables influencing the AMD abundance coming onto sandy shores.

In this paper we propose to study the banana by problematizing the exoticism, mythification, fetishization and scientism of the colonial view. To do this, we approach the work Musa paradisiaca, a video installation by the artist José Alejandro Restrepo, and the dialogue that it holds with the text “Volver a comer del árbol de la ciencia” by Juan Cárdenas. Our main hypothesis is that in the articulation of these works the image of the banana becomes a sign of duration. As an expression of multiplicities, contradictions and heterogeneities of times, the duration is expressed in the modes of presence of a pattern (which in the case of our study is the banana) that is detached from the merely common and static and expresses a multiple, contradictory and heterogeneous presence that configures variations displayed in the extension of time. The inscription of banana as a pattern entails a departure from context, a search for the gaps where the disorder of the dominant and the norm occurs, that is, a variation.

Chagas disease (CD) is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and affects 6–7 million people worldwide. The diagnosis is still challenging, due to extensive parasite diversity encompassing seven genotypes (TcI-VI and Tcbat) with diverse ecoepidemiological, biological, and pathological traits. Chemotherapeutic intervention is usually effective but associated with severe adverse events. The development of safer, more effective therapies is hampered by the lack of biomarker(s) (BMKs) for the early assessment of therapeutic outcomes. The mammal-dwelling trypomastigote parasite stage expresses glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored mucins (tGPI-MUC), whose O-glycans are mostly branched with terminal, nonreducing α-galactopyranosyl (α-Gal) glycotopes. These are absent in humans, and thus highly immunogenic and inducers of specific CD anti-α-Gal antibodies. In search for α-Gal-based BMKs, here we describe the synthesis of neoglycoprotein NGP11b, comprised of a carrier protein decorated with the branched trisaccharide Galα(1,2)[Galα(1,6)]Galβ. By chemiluminescent immunoassay using sera/plasma from chronic CD (CCD) patients from Venezuela and Mexico and healthy controls, NGP11b exhibited sensitivity and specificity similar to that of tGPI-MUC from genotype TcI, predominant in those countries. Preliminary evaluation of CCD patients subjected to chemotherapy showed a significant reduction in anti-α-Gal antibody reactivity to NGP11b. Our data indicated that NGP11b is a potential BMK for diagnosis and treatment assessment in CCD patients.
